We use the 2018 survey data from the Household, Income, and Labour Dynamic (HILDA) in Australia and the Household Economic Survey (HES) in New Zealand to investigate the retirement income sufficiency in Australia and New Zealand. Our baseline results indicate that the annuitized net wealth is greater for Australian retirees than for New Zealand retirees. However, New Zealand retirees enjoy a higher level of life satisfaction than Australian retirees. Further analysis reveals a significant greater pre- and postretirement income for the top 10% of wealthy Australian retirees, mainly due to the higher level of homeownership in Australia within this group. Our study fills the gap in the existing literature, which studies the macro- and microlevel influences on Australia and New Zealand retirees, and it also offers important policy implications. This study aimed to identify dietary trends in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) and whether inequities in dietary patterns are changing. We extracted data from the Household Economic Survey (HES), which was designed to provide information on impacts of policy-making in NZ, and performed descriptive analyses on food expenditures. Overall, total household food expenditure per capita increased by 0.38% annually over this period. Low-income households spent around three quarters of what high-income households spent on food per capita. High-income households experienced a greater increase in expenditure on nuts and seeds and a greater reduction in expenditure on processed meat. There was increased expenditure over time on fruit and vegetables nuts and seeds, and healthy foods in Māori (Indigenous) households with little variations in non-Māori households. But there was little change in processed meat expenditure for Māori households and expenditure on less healthy foods also increased over time. Routinely collected HES data were useful and cost-effective for understanding trends in food expenditure patterns to inform public health interventions, in the absence of nutrition survey data. Potentially positive expenditure trends for Māori were identified, however, food expenditure inequities in processed meat and less healthy foods by ethnicity and income continue to be substantial. There has been growing interest in the measurement of well-being and subjective well-being across western countries. In New Zealand, official surveys such as the New Zealand General Social Survey, the Disability Survey, and Te Kupenga have asked people about outcomes in multiple aspects of their lives alongside their satisfaction with their lives overall. Outside the Official Statistics System (OSS), surveys such as Gallup and the Sovereign Wellbeing Survey have collected similar data. Measuring well-being offers governments an opportunity to understand the factors, and combinations of factors, that enable people to live the lives that they themselves most value, and have reason to value. This article discusses how cross-domain analysis of multi-dimensional datasets can offer clues to policymakers around complex social issues relating to social inclusion, such as discrimination, institutional trust, loneliness, and aspects of civic and cultural participation. Understanding the associations between various outcomes and indicators can help inform the design and targeting of services facilitating better returns from social investments. Abstract: Out-of-vehicle times were shown to be perceived as being more onerous than in-vehicle time by transit users when making transfers. The present study has two main objectives. The first objective is to determine the effects of uncertainty, in out-of-vehicle times during transfers, on transit users’ willingness to use transfer routes. The second objective is to determine the influence of out-of-vehicle facilities, offered by public-transport (PT) operators, on transit users’ perception of trip attributes related to transfers. A user preference survey was conducted at two major PT terminals in Auckland, New Zealand. The survey data was modelled using cumulative prospect theory and fuzzy logic. The results showed that for all trip attributes, except for comfort, transit users’ exhibited risk averse behaviour; users’ revealed greater preference for the transfer route with less uncertainty in the out-of-vehicle times. For comfort, transit users’ displayed risk-taking characteristics when the waiting time for a seat was less than 5min. Such findings suggest that increasing the consistency in out-of-vehicle times will increase attractiveness of transfer routes thus enabling a more efficient and integrated network of PT routes to result in enlargement of ridership. Policy makers and PT planners must focus on methods of reducing uncertainty in out-of-vehicle times during transfers. Analysis of transit users’ perception of trip attributes, given their current station, revealed statistical evidence of differences for two trip attributes, transfer waiting time and vehicle delay. Such findings indicate that transit users who are accustomed to better out-of-vehicle facilities have a lower tolerance for uncertainty in transfer waiting times and delay times. To the authors’ knowledge, this study provides for the first time in literature a comparison between the two cognitive models. The comparison revealed that CPT and fuzzy logic models are both capable of representing transit users’ decision making process. However, while CPT provides an indication of transit users’ preference for a transfer route, fuzzy logic is capable of providing a closer approximation of the proportion of transit users preferring a transfer route. This 2009 survey-based study describes how large global funds manage investment risk from strategy to implementation. In total, fifty-eight funds with assets aggregating to almost U$2 trillion participated in the survey. Almost all large funds (over U$25 billion) use some form of risk budgeting, whereas smaller funds are less likely to do so. Most funds (88%) manage active management risk (usually through controlling tracking error), whereas only 48% of funds manage balance sheet (surplus) risk. The sample size is perhaps too small to draw firm conclusions, but preliminary indications suggest that funds that believe in managing both active and surplus risk have generated better risk / reward tradeoffs. Per dollar invested, American corporate and public funds have the lowest average number of staff dedicated to risk management, whereas Australia / New Zealand and Canada have the highest. The article focuses on the development of a Framework for Socio Economic Classification that could offer ways to provide sociologists with a more useful research tool by using the existing official statistics. The existing classification frameworks--Elley-Irving scales, the New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (NZSCO) and the New Zealand Standard Industry Classification (NZSIC)--are discussed. It describes how NZSCO and NZSIC could be linked to survey data on individuals. The article shows how a single dataset could be made by the integration of occupational industrial, economic and other social data. It concludes by highlighting the usefulness of the Framework in studying the issues of labour process changes and social stratification.

Most empirical work on expectations has focused on price expectations. This paper extends that work by evaluating the properties of manufacturers' expectations of a range of nominal and real variables. The data for this study consist of individual firm responses to the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research's quarterly tendency survey over an unusually long period of 24 years from 1964 to 1987. Measures of accuracy, bias and efficiency are constructed and the results indicate that the properties of expectations differ across variables and conclusions drawn from empirical studies of price expectations should not be generalized. Manufacturers are more accurate at forecasting changes in prices than quantities. The 'mainstream rational expectations hypothesis' is rejected for most of the quantity variables but the case for rejection was not so clear for expectations of prices and costs. The results are consistent with the view that price expectations behave more like plans than forecasts. Firms' views about costs are shown to have a similar plan like character. The paper also includes the results of a preliminary investigation into the behaviour of expectation errors over the business cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on a survey of exporters in New Zealand about a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) with China. Results of the survey show that 63% believe that an FTA would yield a positive impact on their businesses. It adds that 65% recognize that there exist barriers for export trading to China such as red tape and the complex regulatory government. Derek Anderson of DHL Express New Zealand suggests increased activity from government agencies and support for business in New Zealand from the Chinese private sector.
