This article presents an interview with playwright Peter Barnes. His mastery of dramatic language owes a great debt to both, as does his taste for highly theatrical and non-naturalistic situations. He says that if English drama were denuded of great plays, if London were Luxemburg or some country that didn't have a great dramatic literary tradition, he might have said there was a reason for adapting a great novel for the stage. But England has one of the greatest, if not one of the richest treasure-houses of great drama, Elizabethan, Jacobean, Restoration, 18th Century, 19th Century plays.
