- Abstract
The aim of the present study was to examine associations between parenting and child behaviour problems in two neighbouring countries with subtle, yet apparent cultural differences. Participants were mothers and fathers of preschool-age children from Latvia and Lithuania. Parents completed a measure of child-rearing attitudes and reported on their child's internalizing and externalizing behaviours. In both countries, parental warmth was negatively associated with child behaviour problems, and punishment orientation was positively associated. There were differences by country in the association of paternal psychological control and behaviour problems, and in the interactions of parenting dimensions, specifically maternal warmth and punishment orientation. Possible differences in the meaning attributed to parenting practices imply considerations for parent training programs.

Glyphosate is one of the most widely used herbicides, but is still in the spotlight due to its controversial impact on the environment and human health. The main purpose of this study was to explore the effects of different glyphosate usages on harvested grain/seed contamination. Two field experiments of different glyphosate usage were carried out in Central Lithuania during 2015–2021. The first experiment was a pre-harvest application, with two timings, the first according to the label (14–10 days), and the other applied 4–2 days before harvest (off-label), performed in winter wheat and spring barley in 2015 and 2016. The second experiment consisted of glyphosate applications at label rate (1.44 kg ha
−1 ) and double dose rate (2.88 kg ha−1 ) at two application timings (pre-emergence of crop and at pre-harvest), conducted in spring wheat and spring oilseed rape in 2019–2021. The results suggest that pre-emergence application at both dose rates did not affect the harvested spring wheat grain or spring oilseed rape seeds—no residues were found. The use of glyphosate at pre-harvest, despite the dosage and application timing, led to glyphosate's, as well as its metabolite, aminomethosphonic acid's, occurrence in grain/seeds, but the amounts did not reach the maximum residue levels according to Regulation (EC) No. 293/2013. The grain storage test showed that glyphosate residues remain in grain/seeds at steady concentrations for longer than one year. A one year study of glyphosate distribution within main and secondary products showed that glyphosate residues were mainly concentrated in wheat bran and oilseed rape meal, while no residues found in cold-pressed oil and wheat white flour, when glyphosate used at pre-harvest at the label rate. COVID-19 pandemic ,PSYCHOLOGICAL distress ,DECISION making in clinical medicine ,TRAINING of medical students ,COMPARATIVE studies - Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has transgressed biomedical categories. According to Horton, a "syndemic" infected virtually all societal relations and practices. In particular, the pandemic has created sociomoral ecologies challenging clinical decision-makers. Constraints and pressures related to micro-, meso-, exo-, and macro-ecologies framing physicians, nurses, and medical students in training were identified. These factors exacerbated moral distress among clinicians. In a joint Polish-Lithuanian project, we examined predictors of moral distress in pandemic clinical contexts. A questionnaire-based, real-time, correlational, and comparative study was conducted in Poland and Lithuania after the first pandemic year with N=227 participants. The two national samples found unexpected differences in regular and pandemictype moral distress levels. Polish participants showed significantly higher moral distress levels than their Lithuanian counterparts. The following article discusses these findings and recommends reinforcing resilient medical decision-making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A special program and action plan have been developed in Lithuania for the purpose of implementing the European Council Directive 2011/70/Euratom of 19 July 2011, establishing the Community framework for the responsible and safe management of spent fuel and radioactive waste. An important part of this plan is related to geological investigations for the site selection, design and construction of deep geological repository (DGR) for spent nuclear fuel and high-level long-lived radioactive wastes. The main task of geological investigations is to select a suitable geological environment for DGR, which is closely related to that of the DGR site. There are several alternative geological formations potentially suitable for DGR in Lithuania. Selection of the most suitable DGR site should be made and the DGR concept should be developed applying clear methodology. The proposed methodology is based on the safety requirements established by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), systematic approach and criteria that are widely used worldwide. The suitability evaluation criteria are divided into 4 groups according to the factors responsible for the stability and safety of the DGR system. The highest rank of significance is assigned to the group of criteria that are associated with the factors responsible for the loss of the long-term stability of the system. The criteria associated with the DGR system confinement are assigned to the second group and are ranked second in significance. The third group of evaluation criteria could be characterized as a data availability group. It consists of the evaluation criteria associated with the emergence of uncertainties. Features or processes responsible for the improvement of formation properties over time are assigned to the fourth group and have the lowest rank of significance. The application of this methodology allows calculating the suitability score of each potentially suitable geological formation depending on the level of data detail at any stage of the investigation. The benefits of cereal-legume mixed cropping is a sustainable agricultural practice. However, knowledge of the genotypic differences of semi-leafless pea varieties is not enough to help them compete with cereals. In this study, the effects of Lithuania's newest Pisum sativum cultivars ('Egle DS' and 'Lina DS') and, for comparison, a control cultivar ('Jūra DS') established with Avena sativa in mixed cropping system were investigated. Three years of field trials (2018, 2019 and 2020) with four experiments involved three different mixtures of each field pea cultivar with oat. The aboveground biomass of mixed cropped new field pea cultivars was found to be significantly higher: biomass of cultivars 'Egle DS' increased by 17.0% and 'Lina DS' by 7.2% on average compared with the control cultivar 'Jūra DS'. For the mixed cropping system, statistically greater total aboveground biomass was observed with plant ratios of 50% pea + 50% oat and 60% pea + 40% oat compared to peas monocultures. Mixed cropped oat was the dominant species in all tested mixture compositions; however, the highest total grain yield of mixed crops was obtained when new pea 'Lina DS' and 'Egle DS' cultivars were included in the mixtures compared with the control cultivar. The new pea cultivar 'Egle DS' had a greater effect on protein content compared to other tested pea cultivars. In the new pea cultivars 'Lina DS' and 'Egle DS', the higher photosynthetic capacity and aboveground biomass of mixed cropped pea with oat showed mixture effects in the mixed cropped system and could increase total yield compared with pea monoculture. Generally, the new pea cultivars displayed a greater Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) value, resulting in the greatest yield among the mixtures on average for all three years and all four experiments. Future research could optimize the effects of pea cultivar mixtures with cereals to further improve the yield of organic mixed cropping systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: MASK‐air® is an app whose aim is to reduce the global burden of allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma. A transfer of innovative practices was performed to disseminate and implement MASK‐air® in European regions. The aim of the study was to examine the implementation of the MASK‐air® app in Lithuanian adults in order to investigate (i) the rate of acceptance in this population, (ii) the duration of app use and (iii) the evaluation of the app after its use. Methods: In a longitudinal study, Lithuanian adults with AR and/or asthma were recruited by allergists. They were informed about how to use MASK‐air® and were followed closely. They were reviewed after one to 3 months to evaluate satisfaction and were asked to continue using the app. Results: Among the 149 patients recruited (37.2 ± 10.4 years), 52.4% had rhinitis alone, 42.9% had rhinitis, asthma and/or conjunctivitis multimorbidity, and 2.7% isolated asthma. According to the MASK‐air® baseline questionnaire, 88.3% of patients considered that their symptoms were troublesome. Data were available for 102 (68.4%) patients. The duration of app usage in patients ranged from 1 to 680 days (median, 25–75 percentile: 54, 23.2–151 days). Forty‐two (41.1% of patients who were reviewed) patients agreed to share their opinion on MASK‐air®. Most users of the app were satisfied, from 46.5% thinking their allergy was treated more successfully to 90.4% recommending this app to other allergy sufferers. Discussion: When recommended by physicians, MASK‐air® was used for a longer period of time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 pandemic , *PSYCHOLOGICAL distress , *QUARANTINE , *PANEL analysis , *DISCIPLINE of children , *CHILDREN'S health - Abstract
Lithuania was one of the countries that applied quarantine during the rise of COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020, the duration of which was three months (from March 16th, 2020 to June 16th, 2020). Despite emerging literature showing negative effects of quarantine on children’s mental health, insight into specific risk factors is lacking due to limited longitudinal data. The aim of the present study was to analyse changes in Lithuanian pre-schoolers’ emotional and behavioural problems during the first quarantine due to COVID-19 pandemic and their relations to the potential risk factors such as parental distress and increase in daily screen time. Parents of 78 children aged 4 to 6 (31% girls and 69% boys, mean age at the first measurement 66.1 months (SD = 10.33)) completed Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL/1½-5), questions on children’s screen time and physical activity and reported their distress before the quarantine (November 2019–February 2020) and at the end of it (May–June 2020). Results showed that children had more behavioral problems, spent more time on screens and were less physically active during the quarantine, and their parents were experiencing more distress than before. However, parental distress emerged as the only variable that predicted preschoolers’ emotional and behavioral problems during the quarantine after a child’s previous problems were taken into account. This highlights the importance of targeting support towards families raising children with behavioral problems, as the challenges they were already facing increase during quarantine and their parents may be more susceptible to less desirable practices such as providing children with more screen time as a way to cope with this situation. SCHOOL children , *COVID-19 , *STAY-at-home orders , *CHILDREN of people with mental illness , *CHILDREN'S health , *COVID-19 pandemic - Abstract
As a result of the outbreak of COVID-19 and consequent restrictions, the distance education was introduced in Lithuania in 2020 spring (the first lockdown, lasted for around 3 months) and 2020 autumn (the second lockdown, still lasting, June 2021). The prevalence of children’s mental health problems during the first lockdown was similar to pre-epidemic rates in Lithuania, but the prolonged lockdown (and therefore school closure) might have more negative consequences on children’s mental health. This study aimed to reveal the incidence of mental health problems as rated by parents with a Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire during the second lockdown in school aged children. This research sample included data of 514 children (46% girls), aged 7 to 14 years old (mean age 10.15 years, SD = 3.47). The children’s mental health problems were assessed using a Lithuanian version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, parental form, in April–May 2021. Results revealed that 29.6% of Lithuanian children had scores in the clinical (abnormal) range of emotional problems and 21.6% – of conduct problems. Based on total difficulties score, 31.6% of children get in clinical range of emotional and behavioural problems, as rated by parents by the end of the second lockdown. The results are compared to pre-pandemic epidemiological rates of emotional and behavioural problems reported and those documented after the first quarantine in Lithuania and highlight important findings for professionals and policy makers about the detrimental effects of prolonged lockdown and school closure on children’s mental health. SOCIAL workers , *SOCIAL case work , *SOCIAL status , *SOCIAL services , *INSTITUTIONAL cooperation , *JOB stress - Abstract
The article analyses a relatively new position in the field of social services for the family: the complexity of the professional activity of a case manager, and the prospects of applying supervision as a form of professional support. In the field of social work, supervision is already a well-known way of counselling professional relationships. While improving their professional qualifications, social workers seek to participate in group, team and individual supervision. The supervision of the manager and the whole organisation is also well known in social work practice. In Lithuania, as in the rest of the world, supervision first established itself in the field of social work, which only proves the complexity of this profession. Social work as a profession is undergoing constant change, services are expanding, and more and more attention is being paid to specialised methodologies when the global approach no longer satisfies the current situation of empowerment. The case manager is a new position, the content of which is still being formed. The research has revealed that employees experience stress and tension as a burden of responsibility, they become the creators of the content of this position, and they face obstacles to inter-institutional cooperation. The qualitative research presented in this article, the interviews with case managers, and the reflection on the experience of supervision, allow us to draw conclusions about the prospects for supervision, and allow us to offer specific forms of supervision; and individual and team supervision become unique in this situation. The article investigates Simonas Daukantas's (1793-1864) BUDĄ Senowęs-Lëtuwiû Kalnienû ĩr Ƶámajtiû (The Character of the Lithuanian Highlanders and Samogitians of the Old Times, 1845; hereafter Bd) with regards to genre, origin of the title, and the dominant German sources of the work. It claims that Daukantas conceived Bd because he understood that the future of Lithuania is closely related to its past. A single, united version of Lithuanian history, accepted by the whole nation, was necessary for the development of Lithuanian national identity and collective feeling. The history, which up until then had not been published in Lithuanian, could have helped to create the contours of a new society by presenting the paradigmatic events of the past. The collective awareness of the difference between the present and the past (and future) should have given the Lithuanian community an incentive to move forward. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

WHEAT , *GRAIN , *AGRICULTURAL research , *GRAIN storage , *BLACK gram - Abstract
A study, conducted at Lithuanian Research Centre of Agriculture and Forestry in 2016 and 2017, addressed the issue of black dots on common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grain, which had not been widely spread in Lithuania before 2016. This problem has provoked a lot of discussion among grain growers, purchasers, processors, scientists and consumers. According to the quality requirements for purchase and supply of wheat grain, visually estimated Fusarium-damaged grain (causal agents - fungi of Fusarium genus) in a sample must not exceed 1%. The objective of the study was to ascertain which of the Fusarium species cause black dots on wheat grain, to determine and compare deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination levels in the grain with different visually estimated Fusarium damage severity, and to verify whether black-dotted grain can be stored without posing the risk of increasing DON concentration. Black dots on grain were identified as the Fusarium graminearum teleomorph Gibberella zeae fruit bodies of ascospores producing perithecia. In our study, black dots were detected in 85% of the tested wheat grain samples collected from various commercial enterprises of Lithuania. The study showed the highest DON concentrations to be present in the samples with Fusarium-damaged grain exceeding 1%, while in the black-dotted grain samples DON concentrations were low. Grain samples for the storage experiment were selected according to the abundance of black-dotted and Fusarium-damaged grain with a moisture content ranging from 19.0% to 19.7%. Black dots on grain did not cause an increase in DON concentrations in grain samples, while the samples with more than 1% visually estimated Fusarium-damaged grain showed higher DON concentrations. The study findings suggest that grain damage by black dots, higher moisture content; storage temperatures (4, 16, 20 and 28 °C) had no significant effect on the increase in DON concentrations. However, it is risky to store grain of higher moisture when the amount of visually estimated Fusarium-damaged grain in the sample exceeds 1%. A significant increase in DON concentrations was recorded in such samples. Although DON concentrations in black-dotted grain samples were low, such grains are arguably a source of pathogens and need to be treated with a high degree of responsibility and thoughtfulness. This article investigates the influence of simonas Daukantas's (1793-1864) book BUDĄ Senowęs-Lëtuwiû Kalnienû ĩr ᵶamajtiû (The Character of the Lithuanian Highlanders and Samogi-tians of the Old Times) (1845; hereafter Bd) on Jonas Mačiulis-Maironis's (1869-1930) Apsakymai apie Lietuvos praeigą (Stories about Lithuania's Past) (1891; hereafter ALP), which was reprinted in 1893 and 1906 as History of Lithuania. The fourth reprint in 1926 was titled Lithuania's Past. Maironis's work was popular and used as a textbook, so it had a significant impact on Lithuanian readers. Although the introduction "Užgyvenimo vieta" ("Place of residence", p. 10) and chapters "Ukiszka vyresnybē" ("Heads of State", pp. 18-19), "Pilēs ir miestai" ("Castles and Cities", pp. 19-20), "Karionēs" ("Battles", pp. 20-23), "Prekyba" ("Trade", p. 23), "Namu gyvenimas" ("Home Life", pp. 23-26) are obviously based on Daukantas's Bd, the author never mentions this fact. Moreover, it seems that Maironis was influenced by Daukantas's style, which he emulates, at times employing the elements of essay and poetry, or using long rhythmic sentences, which are sometimes reminiscent of hexameter and other times of Lithuanian folk song melodies and rhythms. Along with a significant part of Daukantas's style and vocabulary, Maironis absorbed his dominant themes, motifs, personalities and places, images of daily life and nature. Maironis not only repeats all this in his ALP but also transfers them to his poem Lietuva (Lithuania). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the aerobic fitness and physiologic and energetic responses during competitive exercise in aerobic gymnasts. The gymnasts performed a graded treadmill test and competitive group exercises. Energetic response was calculated from oxygen uptake and blood lactate changes. Peak oxygen uptake was similar in International (M=45.4ml⋅kg-1⋅min.-1, SD=3.9) and National (M=44.7ml⋅kg-1⋅min.-1, SD=3.6) level groups. During their competitive routines, total energy and the fractions of aerobic, anaerobic alactic, and anaerobic lactic energy were 1,847.7 (SD=293.9) and 1,747.3 (SD = 196.7) J⋅kg-1, 53.5% (SD=3.1) and 60.3% (SD=6.1), 25.4% (SD=5.9) and 21.4% (SD=5.2), and 21.1% (SD=5.8) and 18.3% (SD=4.5) in international and national level athletes, respectively (p>.05). The contribution of anaerobic energy was higher in the international level group (p=.03). It is concluded that the aerobic fitness and absolute energetic and physiological responses of athletes during competitive activities were not different between the aerobic gymnasts groups with different levels of performance, but a higher relative contribution of anaerobic energy was observed in the group with a higher performance level. The investigations of chemical composition of introduced cultivars of asparagus were carried out in the period from 2004 to 2012 by the scientists of the Aleksandras Stulginskis university Institute of Agricultural and food sciences. Chemical characteristics of asparagus cultivar 'Mary Washington' (control cultivar), standard cultivars: 'D'Argenteuil Primaticcio', 'Schwetzinger Meisterschub', 'Eposs', 'Schneekopf', 'Rambo', 'Gartner Saat'; male cultivars: 'Ravel', 'Ramos', 'Ramada', 'Rally', 'Ranger' were investigated. The amount of biologically active substances in the spears of asparagus depended on the characteristics of cultivar. Larger amounts of dry matters, crude ashes, vitamin C and nitrates were found in the spears of standard cultivars, and larger amounts of crude fat and potassium were found in the spears of male cultivars. Evaluation of chemical composition of the investigated cultivars revealed that the most valuable were spears of male cultivar 'Ravel', and spears of 'Schwetzinger Meisterschub' and 'Rambo' were more valuable between the standard cultivars. EYESPOT (Plant disease) ,DISEASE incidence ,TRITICALE ,POLYMERASE chain reaction ,AGRICULTURAL ecology ,FUNGAL populations - Abstract
The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of eyespot in winter triticale crops in different agro-ecological zones of Lithuania and to use real-time polymerase chain reaction (Real-time PCR) to determine the dominantOculimaculafungi populations in winter triticale crops grown in Lithuania, which has not been previously established. Differences in common fungicide usage practices in triticale crops between Lithuanian agro-ecological zones suggest that the composition ofOculimaculafungi differs across the country. From 2008 to 2012, a total of 70 winter triticale fields were reviewed for eyespot incidence, and the presence of eyespot was identified in 93.5% of the fields tested. Over this five-year period, the disease incidence averaged 32%. The highest incidence (34.8%) of eyespot was found in the Middle Lowland zone of Lithuania, the lowest (25.8%) was in the Eastern zone and an intermediate incidence (30.2%) was observed in the Western zone. During the 2010–2012 period,Oculimacula acuformiswas the most prevalentOculimaculaspp. in the majority of triticale crops inspected. Only in 3 cases out of 27 was the amount ofOculimacula yallundaeDNA higher than that ofO. acuformis. According to our results, the incidence of eyespot in triticale varied greatly and could be of economic importance in some fields. The predominance ofO. acuformisoverO. yallundaeis an important consideration in the choice of fungicides for eyespot control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study tested societal effects on caregiver/teacher ratings of behavioral/emotional problems for 10,521 preschoolers from 15 societies. Many societies had problem scale scores within a relatively narrow range, despite differences in language, culture, and other characteristics. The small age and gender effects were quite similar across societies. The rank orders of mean item ratings were similar across diverse societies. For 7,380 children from 13 societies, ratings were also obtained from a parent. In all 13 societies, mean Total Problems scores derived from parent ratings were significantly higher than mean Total Problems scores derived from caregiver/teacher ratings, although the size of the difference varied somewhat across societies. Mean cross-informant agreement for problem scale scores varied across societies. Societies were very similar with respect to which problem items, on average, received high versus low ratings from parents and caregivers/teachers. Within every society, cross-informant agreement for item ratings varied widely across children. In most respects, results were quite similar across 15 very diverse societies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ENGAGEMENT (Philosophy) , *EMPIRICAL research , *POLITICAL participation ,SEX differences (Biology) - Abstract
Despite the fact that during the last decades the issue of political engagement in other countries is an important research topic, there is an obvious lack of empirical research on political engagement of adolescents and youth in Lithuania. One of main questions concerning civic and political activity is gender differences in political engagement. The article deals with the results of research with 2652 adolescents (1488 girls - 56.1 % and 1164 boys - 43.9 %) attending 9-12 grades in 8 schools in Klaipeda region. The study examines the gender differences of political interests, attitudes towards politics and expected political engagement in future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investigations were carried out in the experimental ields of Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture in 2009-2010. Soil--calcaric epihypogleyic luvisol of sandy loam on light loam soil IDg8-k (Calc(ar)i--Epihypogleyc Luvisols--LVg-p-w-cc). Arable layer was 20-25 cm in thickness. Carrot cultivar 'Svalia' F1 was grown in furrowed surface. Sowing scheme 62 + 8 cm. There was investigated the influence of Naturcomplet®--G fertilizer rates on carrot yield and quality. Applying fertilizer Naturcomplet®-- G (rate--70 kg ha-1 ) there was obtained the biggest density and total yield of carrot crop. Naturcomplet®--G fertilizer rates didn't inluenced more signiicantly the average carrot root-crop diameter and weight, but applying 80 kg ha-1 of Naturcomplet®--G carrot root-crops were on the average 1.9 mm longer then this of not fertilized ones. The biggest addition of marketable yield and the output of marketable yield were obtained fertilizing carrots with 80 kg ha of Naturcomplet®--G. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CROP rotation , *CROPPING systems , *SOIL exhaustion , *BARLEY disease & pest resistance - Abstract
At the Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture in 2003-2007 there were investigated the most suitable plants for green manure and evaluated their influence on ecologically grown carrot yield and damage of pests. Experiments were carried out in the experimental field for ecological vegetable growing, in calcaric epihypogleyic luvisol of sandy loam on light loam. It was established that biomass of the plants grown for green manure left in the ploughing layer uneven amount of organic matter. Pea and oat mixture produced the biggest amount of organic matter (43.2 t ha-1), barley - the least one (24.5 t ha-1). All the sideral plants influenced humus positively. All the preplants increased carrot yield. The biggest carrot yield (correspondingly 40.4 and 41.2 t ha-1) was obtained growing them after barley and pea-oat mixture for green manure. In the first year after harvesting of the plants for green manure, when carrot yield was gathered, there was found only very small amount of root-crops damaged by pests (Psila rosae Fabr. and Pemphigus phenax Born et Blunck). At the end of rotation, i. e. in third year after plant ploughing for green manure, the percent of carrot root-crops damaged by pests increased. The least amount of damaged root-crops was found in carrot, which preplant in the beginning of rotation was barley for green manure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investigations were carried out at the Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture, in calcaric epihypogleyic luvisol of sandy loam on light loam soil (IDg8-k / Calc(ar)i- Epihypogleyc Luvisols - LVg-p-w-cc), in 2005-2007. Ploughing layer of the soil was 20-25 cm in thickness. Onion cv. 'Babtų didieji' was grown on flat surface. Sowing scheme - 62 + 8 cm. There was investigated the influence of humistar applied before sowing rates on onion productivity and its indices, humus quality changes in the soil and there was evaluated the interaction and the influence of environmental factors on these factors. The biggest onion total (24.2 t ha-1) and standard (19.2 t ha-1) yield was obtained fertilizing with humistar rate of 20 l ha-1. Standard yield output was 79.7 %. Applying this humistar rate there was the biggest crop density, turnip weight and its diameter, and the relation of humic acids in onion crop was 0.29. The increase of crop density (r = 0.64; 23 %), precipitation amount during vegetation in the investigation period (r = 0.48; 18 %), turnip weight (r = 0.34; 12 %) and the amount of humic acids in the soil (r = 0.30; 11 %) increased onion standard yield. The influence of the increase of fulvic acids (r = - 0.34; 12 %) and temperature (r = - 0.48; 18 %) was weak, but negative. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FERTILIZERS , *ONIONS , *PLANT nutrition , *PLANT development , *HORTICULTURE research - Abstract
In 2005-2007 at the Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture there was investigated the influence of liquid fertilizer "Biokal 01" and potassium magnesia on productivity and quality of edible onions 'Babtų didieji' grown out of seeds. Investigations were carried out in experimental field for ecological vegetable growing, in calcaric epihypogleyic luvisol of sandy loam on light loam soil. It was established that when onion seeds were processed with liquid fertilizer "Biokal 01" the crop grew more even and denser. Onions, which were fertilized before sowing with potassium magnesia and for three times during vegetation with liquid fertilizer "Biokal 01", were of bigger diameter and mass. In all the years of investigations the biggest marketable onion yield and output of marketable yield (correspondingly 15,2 ha-1 and 65,8 %) were obtained fertilizing before sowing with potassium magnesia and for three times during vegetation with fertilizer "Biokal 01". The biggest amount of the persistent marketable production was obtained storing onions, which were fertilized before sowing with potassium magnesia and during vegetation - with liquid fertilizer "Biokal 01". ROOT crops , *AGRICULTURAL productivity , *AGRICULTURAL chemicals , *CROP yields - Abstract
At the Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture, in the experimental field for ecological vegetable growing in 2005-2007 there was investigated the influence of liquid fertilizer "Biokal 01" and potassium magnesia on red beet 'Kamuoliai 2' productivity and quality. Experiments were carried out in the calcaric epihypogleyic luvisol of sandy loam on light loam soil. It was established that the treatment of red beet seeds with the liquid fertilizer "Biokal 01" produced more even and denser crop. Red beets fertilized before sowing with potassium magnesia and for three times per vegetation with liquid fertilizer "Biokal 01" were of bigger diameter and weight. Root crop diameter in comparison with this of not fertilized red beet increased 18 mm or 26.6 %, weight - 139 g or 65.2 %. In all the years of investigations the biggest standard root crop yield and yield addition (correspondingly 32.8 ha-1 and 7.2 t ha-1) were obtained fertilizing before sowing with potassium magnesia and for three times per vegetation with liquid fertilizer "Biokal 01". Dry matter amounts in red beet root crops fluctuated from 18.8 up to 19.8 %, dry soluble solids - from 15.7 up to 16.5 %, sugar - from 9,5 up to 10,51 %, nitrates - from 207 up to 366 mg kg-1. Fertilization with the investigated fertilizers didn't influence significantly the variation of the mentioned parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DYSLIPIDEMIA ,CARDIOVASCULAR diseases risk factors ,DISEASE prevalence ,PREVENTIVE medicine ,HEALTH of adults - Abstract
Background: Dyslipidemia is highly prevalent and is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease in Lithuania. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of severe dyslipidemia in Lithuanian middle aged primary prevention population and to investigate cardiovascular risk profile. Methods: The group of 83,376 people were examined in the Lithuanian High Cardiovascular Risk primary prevention program (LitHiR), during 2009–2015 years. This study recruited middle aged men and women without overt cardiovascular disease. The prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors was compared between severe dyslipidemia group and
control group. Results: Severe dyslipidemia was present in 13.5% (11265) of the subjects; 66.6% (7508) were females. The subjects with severe dyslipidemia had significantly higher rates of arterial hypertension (63.5% vs. 44.2%,p < 0.001), diabetes mellitus (16% vs. 8.1%,p < 0,001), abdominal obesity (51% vs. 30.3%,p < 0.001), body mass index (BMI) > 30 (kg/m2 ) (38.8% vs. 24.1%,p < 0.001), metabolic syndrome (47.2% vs. 9.2%,p < 0.001), unbalanced diet (66.5% vs. 53.5%,p < 0.001), insufficient physical activity (56% vs. 44.2%,p < 0.001), family history of cardiovascular disease (29.7% vs. 22.7%,p < 0.001) in comparison with control group. Subjects without dyslipidemia had significantly higher rates of smoking (26.4% vs. 22.7%,p < 0.001). The prevalence of familial hypercholesterolemia was 0.1%, very high hypertriglyceridemia - 0.2% and familial mixed dyslipidemia - 0.1% of the subjects examined in the LitHiR programme. Conclusions : High prevalence of dyslipidemia remains a major problem in Lithuania. 9 out of 10 people have dyslipidemia, 1 out of 10 - severe dyslipidemia. Severe dyslipidemia is associated with higher frequency of other cardiovascular risk factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

ORGANIC farming , *CROP diversification , *PLANT diversity , *AGRICULTURAL productivity research , *CROP yields - Abstract
In Lithuania, the land area under organic management has been steadily increasing over the recent years. A research and development project was implemented in Lithuania with the aim of ascertaining crop strukcure, plant diversity and crops productivity in organically-managed farms under different soil conditions. In mixed farms, involved both in crop and animal production, perennial forage grasses prevailed in the crop structure, while cereals predominated in crop production farms. Crop production farms grew more grain legumes and their mixtures with cereals compared with mixed farms. Of grain legumes, field pea (semi-leafless) occupied the largest area. Lithuania's natural conditions are suitable for the cultivation of cereals, which are the main crops in the organic farm. Central Lithuania's soils are best suited for winter wheat cultivation. The total production area of spring cereals is slightly bigger than that of winter cereals. The greatest crop species diversity (on average 8 species) was recorded in the farms present in Central Lithuania, characterised by fertile soils, where conditions for both crop production and animal production are favourable. The productivity of organically - managed crops was unstable and varied within a very wide range. This was influenced not only by natural and soil conditions but also by the different agronomic practices applied. Winter cereal was slightly more productive than spring cereal.
