The aims of this essay are: to identify some survivals of classical nationalist thinking in the Latin American field of border studies and to offer some tools to further a critical epistemology on borders. This essay is fundamentally based on a bibliographic exploration work and on the reflexive process that took place in my own research experience. I will pay particular attention to the persistence of the association between the concept of frontier and the form of the nation-state, as well as the monoscalar look. I mainly review the production of the Latin American south of the last decades, although works generated in countries further north are also recovered. This work does not reach conclusive results, but develops some guidelines that order my individual work as well as that of the group that I am part of, the Group of Studies on Borders and Regions of the University of Buenos Aires. The present paper studies the history and characteristics of the legal concept of supremacy. The concept of supremacy is employed by several constitutions in Latin America to define the powers of the president, and to establish the role of the president as leader of the Nation. Although a concept of supremacy has been used in recent controversies about the presidency of the United States, the paper shows that constitutional powers of presidents in Latin America are very different from the powers assigned to the president by the United States constitution. The differences are described in the paper. First of all, the paper analyses constitutional language, the opinions of legal scholars and judicial precedents. Secondly, the history of the concept of presidential supremacy is considered. Finally, the paper discusses the impact of presidential supremacy on the state structure and on the consolidation of national institutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the concept of the nation and nationalism from a Marxist philosophical perspective proposed by historian Eric Hobsbawm. The author comments on the history and historiography of the notion of nationalism and how Hobsbawm's ideas were influence by Marxist ideology. He considers the applicability of nationalism to the region of Latin America. He also examines the concept known as militant Marxism and its relation to nationalism. The importance to Hobsbawm of the interaction between philosophy and history is also explored.

The present paper offers an approach to the different ways in which the figure of writer and politician Rómulo Gallegos has been used in Venezuela. It looks at political rivalries regarding national legacies within the context of the Bolivarian Revolution, and the positions taken by the political and academic fields. The purpose of which, as the paper will show, is the appropriation of some of his legacies, especially in relation to nationalistic and identity-related narratives in the beginning of the twentieth century. Women's entry into the public sphere can be preigured in Latin American cultural independency strives, which were based on a lettered culture. The foreword to Andrés Bello's Gramática, the embodiment of this culture, is a cultural modernization project that bears two impulses, one of pedagogical will and another of linguistic dialogism. The first impulse will be dealt with an analysis of Eugenio María de Hostos' discourse. The second one is built as a contiguous polyphonic space that seeks to dignify American Spanish in relation to the peninsular variation.This double articulation of the lettered culture allows for the incorporation of new voices into the norm, as is the case of Gabriela Mistral and her pedagogic discourse. This article presents a literary criticism for Latin American literature dealing with the theme of regionalism, such as "La vorágine," by José Eustacio Rivera, "Don Segundo Sombra," by Ricardo Güiraldes, and "Doña Bárbara," by Rómulo Gallegos. The author comments on the representation of Latin American indigenous groups in these works, particularly during the early 20th century. A comparative analysis of local literature and regional novels is also provided.

During the XIX century, the polemical ideologies about conquer and colonization of America were intensified among the Latin American elites. A clear example was that of the orthodox conservative man called Miguel Antonio Caro (1843- 1909), an active member of the Nationalist "Regeneration" Party and executor and main promoter of the "1886 Constitution." His political project conceived as missionary and patriotic was controversial. His political project intended to keep Spanish heritage and reject independence demanded by many radical liberals of the continent for reaching development and civilization of our peoples. This article evaluates the main ideas Caro had before the sociopolitical problem of Latin American independences, his passionate controversy while defending Spain as a means for recovering Hispanic civilization in our territories. After over 200 years of our independence, this article provides a possibility to give a second thought about our identity and nationality, based on one of the distinguished leaders and defenders of our Latin American thinking. In the early XXth Century, in most parts of Latin America, important phenomena associated with incipient urbanization and industrialization began to occur in ways of living and working; together with these, social, political and economic crises were unleashed which had not been controlled when they arose once again. Nationalism and education emerged as tools able to counteract them, and throughout the continent, ideologies appeared that tried to understand, articulate and project them. John Dewey approached them from the United States of America, Pedro Henríquez Ureña from the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Argentina, José Carlos Mariátegui did the same in Peru as did José Vasconcelos from Mexico. This study will show the approach Vasconcelos took to notions of education and nation, starting from a systematic process of content analysis of his work that makes it possible to weigh this intellectual as one of the grand masters among American youth, as young people from Peru, Panama and Colombia thought in their time. This article is a general mapping about the most relevant features related to contemporary Latin American narrative, and it is based on global analyses published in recent years by several critics from the region, included Brazil. The first part discusses extra-literary aspects, such as publishing industry conditions, literary groups building, and the media impact. The last part refers to themes and formal aspects regarding to new literary productions in Latin America, in particular the relationship between new writers and Latin American tradition, as well as the concept of nation. The figure of the soldier writer in literature stories constitutes a foundational paradigm in the construction of the idea about the Latin-American intellectual. Such paradigm is the object of a dynamic that we named the circle of metamorphosis, which evidences the process that begins with the soldier writer in battle —represented by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada— and ends with the hero writer as a constructor of public opinion and narrator of national history. All these images take part in the construction of national identity and in the ideal of the Latin-American intellectual linked to the battle and performance characteristics of Emancipation. The article proposes that nations are the result, not the cause, of wars of independence. It presents an alternative assessment of conflicts within the Catholic Monarchy which occurred during the period from 1811 to 1820. The analysis aims to steer clear of constructions that have subsequently emerged and to incorporate novel works from various fields, political theory in particular, regarding the idea of nation. The article views wars of independence not as the struggle between nations, rather as an issue of sovereignty.

This article analyzes the new historiographic perspectives developed in recent studies of 19th century Spanish American political history. Grouping these studies around three fundamental topics - political citizenship and nation building, violence and war, and the institutionalization of the state - it underlines how these new interpretations help modify the image of the 19th century as one characterized by violence, anarchy, and political boss-rule (caudillismo).
