Complementary DNA encoding a part of myosin heavy chain was cloned from fast skeletal muscle of Japanese codling Physiculus japonicus. Japanese codling, a frequent catch off the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan, is a typical underutilized fish species, especially in summer. Phylogenetic analysis of the deduced amino acid sequence of Japanese codling myosin heavy chain loop 2 region revealed that this fish belongs to a group comprising white croaker Pennahia argentata and walleye pollack Gadus chalcogrammus, which are commonly used as raw materials for surimi-based products. Thus Japanese codling meat was considered a promising candidate ingredient for surimi-based products. Salt-ground meat was prepared from Japanese codling in the presence of 0.5 M NaCl and subjected to a two-step heating procedure: pre-heating at 15–70 °C for 30 min, and secondary heating at 85 °C for 20 min. Thermal gels with a maximum breaking strength of > 10 N were produced by this process. The breaking strength was comparable to that of white croaker and walleye pollack. On the basis of the phylogenetic analysis of myosin heavy chains, and the properties of the heat-induced surimi gel, we conclude that Japanese codling is a promising raw material for the production of surimi-based products. • Sunki pickle fermentation was performed using turnip leaves from different origins. • A sample showed insufficient pH decrease despite high lactic acid bacterial counts. • High Limosilactobacillus / Lactobacillus ratio was related to ammonia accumulation. • In vitro study showed strong correlation between pH and ammonia changes (R = 0.892). • Ammonia–Gln-Glu correlations implied glutaminase activity suppressed the drop in pH. Sunki is an unsalted lactic fermented pickle made from red turnip leaves in the Kiso district, Japan. Accidental insufficient decrease in pH during sunki fermentation seriously reduces the product quality. To obtain insights into how the insufficient decrease occurs, we comprehensively analyzed differences in the microbiological and chemical properties of sunki made from three different turnip harvests and found a significant difference in their final pH. Microbiota and metabolome analyses revealed that the insufficient pH decrease showed strong relationships with the chemical composition (low lactic acid and high ammonia levels) and bacterial community structure (low Lactobacillus and high Limosilactobacillus). In vitro sunki fermentation experiments demonstrated that accumulated ammonia was associated with a decrease in glutamine and an increase in glutamic acid. Limosilactobacillus reuteri , a species of lactic acid bacteria possessing heterolactic metabolism, was suggested to be mainly responsible for insufficient decrease in pH related to accumulated ammonia during sunki fermentation. This study examines settlement system changes before and during the Last Glacial Maximum in central Japan. Human mobility is estimated from raw material procurement to infer how Upper Paleolithic hunter–gatherers acquired necessary materials. Seventy-four sites are investigated with the methodological assumption that the lithic raw materials were obtained through an embedded strategy. Changes in settlement patterns through time are reconstructed in the following ways. First, around 30,000 14 Cyrs BP, hunter–gatherer territories formed between high-quality lithic raw material sources approximately 200 km apart, constrained by the distribution of lithic raw material sources and the area's terrain and suggesting that their subsistence activities were also conducted in those prime areas. Second, during the Last Glacial Maximum, hunter–gatherers still acquired lithic raw materials from distant sources around 200 km apart, while the area of hunting activities using spear points decreased to an 80 km radius. As territories shrank, large manufacturing sites for making spear points appeared in the vicinity of high-quality raw material sources in this period. In sum, the embedded lithic procurement system in Japan during this period was largely changed by ecological deterioration. Patterns transitioned from general resource exploitation in the early period to seasonal movement between isolated resource-rich areas during the Last Glacial Maximum, resulting in significant change from the mobile hunter–gather society at the end of the Late Pleistocene to the sedentary society of the Holocene. A potential alternative of sewage sludge reuse is the substitute of raw material for Portland cement. In order to accommodate the desired percentage of the target users of a product, decisions must be made to ensure that the design satisfies performance requirements such as user safety, comfort, and ease of use. The marketing concept of “utility theory” is one approach to quantifying the effects of design decisions. It is leveraged in this study to develop a design evaluation approach that considers: a) factors that may be either design-related (design specifications) or user-related (relevant body dimensions) and b) the raw material investment in the design. Based on data collected during a usage behavior study involving doorways of numerous sizes, a conditional logit model was developed to predict the utility of a doorway as a function of its size and the user’s stature and shoulder breadth. Next, an eco-design parameter was incorporated into the model as a penalty based on raw material usage. This approach was found to be useful in studying frequently encountered tradeoffs in decisions that could potentially increase product sustainability but could also reduce the utility of the product to the user. Phosphorus is an important element for agriculture and industry, but its deposits are not uniformly distributed. Countries that do not have primary sources are dependent on imports or regeneration from secondary materials. A widely available secondary source is sewage sludge. Used environmental standards govern sludge treatment, but its inclusion in the raw material policy is often missing. We focus on the Czech Republic (a European Union member) and Japan, countries without phosphorus deposits. Based on our analysis of sewage sludge flows, legislation, and technologies used, we aimed to evaluate approaches towards sustainable phosphorus policy. We figured out that in the Czech Republic, sludge application to soil continues due to legislation deregulation and thus, various pollutants enter the soil along with the sludge. In Japan, thermal treatment predominates, but ash is not processed, and phosphorus is irreversibly lost in landfills or construction. By not implementing a functional P-recovery policy, both countries lose more than 13 % replacement of phosphorus fertilisers from their sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Japan is actively promoting the application of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in construction to utilize plantation forests efficiently and fulfil its climate commitments. Although CLT has unique structural properties and environmental advantages, understanding the environmental burden of CLT manufacturing remains scarce. This study uses input–output analysis to evaluate the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from CLT manufacturing. An extended input–output table was created to measure the GHG emissions by investigating the revenue and expenditure data of the largest CLT manufacturers in Japan in 2020, combined with the energy and emission intensity data. The results showed that electricity, activities not elsewhere classified, road freight transportation (except self-transportation), timber, and logs were the main sectors contributing to GHG emissions from CLT manufacturing. In addition, the environmental burdens of the cement and steel sectors were evaluated for comparison with the same increase in the final demand. We found that CLT manufacturing emits significantly fewer GHGs than the cement and steel sectors. These findings highlight the potential of CLT in reducing environmental burden, particularly in construction and civil engineering, emphasizing the importance of renewable energy use and efficient raw material transportation. A new calibration solution reference material (NMIJ CRM 4213-a) for benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) analysis was prepared and certified by the National Metrology Institute of Japan, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (NMIJ/AIST). Certification of CRM 4213-a was carried out at NMIJ using a freezing point depression method and gravimetric preparation. Certified concentration of this CRM was obtained by multiplying the dilution ratio of raw material BaP in a prepared solution with purity of the raw material. Purity of our raw material was calibrated by a gas chromatograph with flame ionization detection using that of high-purity BaP purified by using a high performance liquid chromatograph with a normal phase column, because purity determination of the raw material by a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) couldn't be assessed directly. The purity of high-purity BaP was assessed in the molar fraction by DSC, and then the purity of the mass fraction was calculated based on average molecular weight of impurities and the purity of the molar fraction. CRM 4213-a has been developed with a certified value of 99.2 mg/kg. Uncertainty was evaluated from purity assessment as well as homogeneity and stability of the CRM, and expanded uncertainty was estimated as 3.9 mg/kg with coverage factor k = 2, corresponding to an estimated confidence interval of approximately 95%. Numerous green polished stone axes have been excavated from the Sannai- Maruyama site, one of Japan's largest archeological sites in the Jomon period (5.9-4.2 cal kyr BP). The axes are composed of weakly metamorphosed fine-grained volcaniclastic rock having a peculiar texture that includes numerous acicular actinolites growing in random directions within a quartz and albite matrix. Cobbles of Aotora stone found along the Nukabira River, Biratori town, southern Hokkaido, are the most likely raw material for these stone axes. Aotora stones have alternate bands of a soft dark-green picritic layer and a hard SiO2-rich pale-green layer. The palegreen layer has a texture similar to the stone axes. Basaltic and picritic volcanic rocks of the Sorachi-Yezo Belt occupy the area along the Shidoni River, a tributary of the Nukabira River. Volcaniclastic rocks similar in texture, mineralogy, and bulk rock compositions to the Aotora stone are exposed in the area. These rocks underwent metamorphism under the actinolite-pumpellyite facies conditions. Their protolith is submarine hyaloclastic rocks that are intercalated with laminated picrite detritus. The stone axes, pale-green layers of Aotora stone, and those of the volcaniclastic rocks of the Shidoni River area all have high SiO2 (55 wt%), Cr (840 μg/g), and Ni (370 μg/g). The rare earth element patterns with abundant light rare earth elements and depleted heavy rare earth elements of stone axes were also consistent with the pale-green layers of the outcrop. These pale-green layers, interleaved with dark-green layers of picritic detritus, were the likely source rock of the stone axes. The high SiO2 content in the pale-green layer caused the crystallization of quartz and albite in the matrix, which resulted in high-quality raw material for making stone axes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several Japanese companies and the government are recently promoting a plastic ban and imposing a tax levy to curb litter and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This has led to a rapid rise of nonplastic packaging alternatives. While plastics and litter are pressing concerns, it is paramount to examine environmental risks of other alternatives before wide application and legislative action, to not further the risk of environmental damage. This study aims to quantify and compare plastic products such as polyethylene‐terephthalate (PET) bottles and high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) bags with widely available alternatives in Japan like glass bottles, aluminum bottles, paper bags, and textile bags, to find a product with the least environmental impact. A life cycle assessment is conducted from a cradle‐to‐grave environmental impact approach that includes raw material extraction, production, transportation, end‐of‐life treatment, and disposal. Sixteen impact categories including climate change, acidification, aquatic‐toxicity, so forth, and weighing is assessed using the MiLCA software. The functional unit is one piece of each packaging product, and impacts of product‐filling, storage, recycling, and reuse are excluded for a consistent comparison. HDPE bags performed better than paper and textile bags in 15 of the 16 analyzed impact categories. Similarly, PET bottles outperformed aluminum and glass bottles in 12 out of the 16 impact categories analyzed. Obesity, along with hypertension and hyperlipidemia, is one of the leading factors of metabolic syndrome, which increases the risk of diabetes. However, controlling obesity is a global challenge. Sake lees, or Japanese rice wine lees, is a by-product of sake fermentation and has been consumed in Japan for a long time. Sake lees contains an abundance of amino acids, peptides, dietary fiber, and micronutrients, which make it highly nutritional. Additionally, sake lees has been reported to have multiple interesting effects when ingested and may aid in combating obesity. In this study, we investigated the effects of sake lees materials on preadipocyte differentiation and fat accumulation in preadipocyte cells (3T3-L1) and analyzed it with a metabolome analysis. We found that compared to the control group, lipid accumulation was suppressed by 80.9% when the 100 °C extract of indigestible sake lees component (ISLCs) was added to 1 mg/mL. Additionally, the metabolome analysis revealed various other differences between the control group and the group treated with ISLCs, especially in amino acids concentrations. Based on the above findings, we demonstrate that ISLCs affect the amino acid metabolic pathways, which in turn affect differentiation and lipid accumulation in adipocytes. Therefore, we suggest that sake lees may aid in combating obesity and addressing metabolic syndromes, both of which can be considered as global issues. Using 1880 s panel data from Yamanashi and Gifu prefectures in Japan, we estimated the diffusion factors and total factor productivity (TFP) in machine-reeling technology in Japan's silk-reeling sector. While the cost of distance through the traditional highway from the Shimosuwa-shuk post town in the Nagano Prefecture has a negative correlation with technology diffusion, the correlation of silk production per population is positive. Machine-reeling technology is raw-material- intensive and does not show increasing returns to scale. While the TFP in Yamanashi is higher than in Gifu, machine-reeling output expansion is larger in the latter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose. The aim of our research consists in argumentation of the possibility of transformation of slag from potential pollutants into a new material used and its promotion as an alternative raw material for the production of consumable layers of asphalt concrete for highway. Methodology. The research on the possibility of using the slag of the electric furnace in “Ferronickel Foundery” is based on the practice of CISRO and “Sumitomo Metals Industri” in Japan, while the products of this process, in accordance with the standards EN12697-1:2006, EN12697-23, EN12697-12, EN 12697-27 dhe DD226-26/2004, have been used as aggregates for the production of asphalt concrete in the AHN Group-Kosovo. Findings. This paper presents the results from a study program related to minimizing the pollution impact of Fe-Ni slag landfill in Drenas, through valorization and improvement of physical-mechanical properties of slag according to the method of “integrated dry granulation” and using it afterwards as aggregate for the production of AC11 surf. Originality. Laboratory analyses were conducted in specialized laboratory and data presented are achieved through the use of devices and equipment that are necessary for experimental research, thus the obtained results are original data presented in this paper. From the research data it has been proved that the conversion of Fe-Ni slag from wastes with high pollutant potentials into aggregates valuable for industry would express significant economic and environmental effects. Coal fly ash (CFA) is a useful recycled resource for uses such as cement raw material. To manage and evaluate safety for effective utilization of CFA, the leaching concentration and amounts of toxic elements in CFA need to be determined. In this study, 38 types of CFA and aged CFA generated in Japan were used to measure the occurrence and leaching concentration range of As and Se. In addition, the leaching characteristics over the long term were examined using statistical analysis. Leaching concentrations of As and Se from CFAs were in the range of 0.001–0.163 mg/L (average: 0.025 mg/L, median: 0.014 mg/L) and 0.001–0.189 mg/L (average: 0.071 mg/L, median: 0.055 mg/L), respectively. In general, the concentrations of aged CFAs were less than those of the CFAs with a few exceptions. Leaching concentrations of As and Se in the tank leaching test changed with time, and As and Se concentrations in the dispersions increased with stirring time. In contrast, pH of the dispersion decreased with time. The relation between As or Se and CFA factors showed that As or Se and pH or Ca were highly correlated. However, in aged CFAs for long-term use, the correlation coefficient for the relation between As and other factors was low while that for Se-S was high. Considering the effective utilization of CFA as a long-term recyclable resource, the leaching processes of As and Se in CFA would change with time depending on the environmental conditions. Indium is a rare metal that is an essential raw material for indium tin oxide (ITO) essential for transparent electrodes for displays. However, its supply is unstable as it is a by-product of zinc. In this research, we investigated the domestic substance flow of indium used for liquid crystal applications in Japan. Accordingly, we quantitatively evaluated the amount of indium contained in the process loss and the content of indium in end-of-life products. Through this quantification, we examined the visualization of loss in the entire flow and the usability of end-of-life products as secondary production. Consequently, it was found that the amount of indium used in the production of end-use-products in Japan has increased significantly due to the growth of liquid crystal display TVs, particularly in preparation for the transition to terrestrial digital broadcasting in 2011, and has drastically decreased after 2012. Meanwhile, some manufacturing bases have been relocated from Japan to other countries, and a certain proportion of end-use-products are imported, by which we infer the domestic input amount of end-use-products in recent years is estimated to have remained at approximately 4 t. Based on the result, after having continued to increase to the maximum value of approximately 70 t in 2014, the in-use stock has exhibited a gradually decreasing trend. Moreover, the indium content in end-of-life products has continued to increase, and in 2015, it exceeded the amount of the end-use-products input into society. Furthermore, compared with the process loss at the time of processing from ITO to a display, the gap has been narrowed from 100 times or more, and the indium content in end-of-life products in 2008 to about 15 times in 2017. The unexpected accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in Japan, which occurred on March 11th, 2011, after the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami struck the north-eastern coast of Japan, released radionuclides into the environment. Today, because of the amounts of radionuclides released and their relatively long half-life, the levels of radiocesium contaminating foodstuffs remain a significant food safety concern. Foodstuffs in Japan have been sampled and monitored for 134,137Cs since the accident. More than 2.5 million samples of foodstuffs have been examined with the results reported monthly during each Japanese fiscal year (FY, from April 1st to March 31st) from 2012 to 2021. A total of 5,695 samples of foodstuffs within the "general foodstuffs" category collected during this whole period and 13 foodstuffs within the "drinking water including soft drinks containing tea as a raw material" category sampled in FY 2012 were found to exceed the Japanese maximum permitted level (JML) set at 100 and 10 Bq/kg, respectively. No samples from the "milk and infant foodstuffs" category exceeded the JML (50 Bq/kg). The annual proportions of foodstuffs exceeding the JML in the "general foodstuffs" category varied between 0.37% and 2.57%, and were highest in FY 2012. The 134,137Cs concentration for more than 99% of the foodstuffs monitored and reported has been low and not exceeding the JML in recent years, except for those foodstuffs that are difficult to cultivate, feed or manage, such as wild mushrooms, plants, animals and fish. The monitoring data for foodstuffs show the current status of food safety risks from 134,137Cs contamination, particularly for cultured and aquaculture foodstuffs on the market in Japan. System dynamics (SD) modeling approach is used to study the US and Japanese car industries' closed loop supply chains. The state of car recycling in the US and Japan and also end of life vehicle (ELV) regulation in Japan are reviewed. Disposal of cars that reach end of life phase in the US and Japan and export of used cars to emerging economies including potential threats to car manufacturers in these economies are examined. Relationships between reduce, reuse, recycle and disposal in the US and Japanese car markets are explored with base scenario analysis using the car consumption data and forecasts. The SD model was also subjected to extreme conditions test for structural validity. Dynamic analysis of different market scenarios for the US and Japanese reverse supply chains are also conducted. The world's forest area decreased to three point nine billion hectares in 2015, a net annual loss of 3.3 million hectares, and large-scale deforestation is occurring in the tropics. Furthermore, greenhouse gas emissions are increasing as forests are converted to other uses such as agricultural land. Against this backdrop, sustainable forest management is becoming increasingly important. This study attempts to quantify people's general awareness and values concerning for on-line shopping habits (in this study, for wooden furniture) in terms of sustainable forest management in Japan by estimating the acceptable price premium or willingness of consumers to pay for wood-related products made using wood produced under sustainable forest management as the raw material. The study proceeds to quantify the awareness and values of consumers concerning sustainable forest management and conservation of forest environments. Consumers were found to have a certain willingness to pay for wooden furniture made from wood produced through sustainable forest management. As a consequence of this analysis, it was revealed that consumers place a high value on sustainable forest management and environmental conservation, and that they are willing to act on these values when purchasing wood-related products. In Japan, there is a long history of consumption of miso, a fermented soybean paste, which possesses beneficial effects on human health. However, the mechanism behind these effects is not fully understood. To clarify the effects of miso on immune cells, we evaluated its immunomodulatory activity in mice. Miso did not alter the percentage of B and T cells in the spleen; however, it increased CD69+ B cells, germinal center B cells and regulatory T cells. Anti-DNA immunoglobulin M antibodies, which prevent autoimmune disease, were increased following ingestion of miso. Transcriptome analysis of mouse spleen cells cultured with miso and its raw material revealed that the expression of genes, including interleukin (IL)-10, IL-22 and CD86, was upregulated. Furthermore, intravital imaging of the small intestinal epithelium using a calcium biosensor mouse line indicated that miso induced Ca2+ signaling in a manner similar to that of probiotics. Thus, ingestion of miso strengthened the immune response and tolerance in mice. These results appear to account, at least in part, to the salubrious effects of miso. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 1937, the Japanese government accelerated the expansion of its military expenditure and began to impose controls on the economy to maintain the balance of international payments. The controls were developed through trial and error. The cotton spinning industry was one of the industries most deeply affected by these controls. Initially, the government simply reduced the allocation of foreign exchange for raw cotton imports. However, because this measure prevented the export of cotton products, especially to countries outside the yen bloc, a new scheme of control, the 'export–import link system', was adopted from the second half of 1938. This scheme was intentionally designed to give firms incentives to export to non‐yen bloc countries and to incorporate elements of market mechanisms into the system of economic controls. Analysing firm‐level data, we find that under the link system, firms with higher labour productivity (LP) tended to grow faster, as occurs under a market economy. This relationship was not observed during the early stage of the controls. This difference is reflected in the pattern of change in aggregate LP. Under the export–import link system, the positive reallocation effect was substantial, similar to a market economy, whereas it was almost zero under the early controls. We developed a seasonal inventory management model for raw materials, such as iron ore and coal, for multiple suppliers and multiple mills. The Nippon Steel Corporation imports more than 100 million tons of raw material annually by vessels from Australia, Brazil, Canada, and other countries. Once these raw materials arrive in Japan, they are transported to domestic mills and stored in yards before being treated in a blast furnace. A critical problem currently facing the industry is the limited capacity of the yards, which leads to high demurrage costs while ships wait for space to open up in the yards before they can unload. To reduce the demurrage costs, the inventory levels of the raw materials must be kept as low as possible. However, inventory levels that are too low may lead to inventory shortage resulting from seasonal supply disruptions (e.g., a cyclone in Australia) that delay the supply of raw materials. Because both excess and depleted inventory levels lead to increased costs, optimal inventory levels must be determined. To solve this problem, we developed an inventory management model that considers variations on the supply side, differences that should be observable upon looking at the ship operations. The concept is to model the probability distribution of ship arrival intervals by brand groups and mills. We divided ship operations into two stages: arrival at all mills (in Japan) and arrival at individual mills. We modeled the former as a nonhomogeneous Poisson process and the latter as a nonhomogeneous Gamma process. A new calibration solution reference material for the determination of perfluorooctane sulfonate anion (PFOS) and its salts has been issued as a certified reference material (CRM) by the National Metrology Institute of Japan, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (NMIJ/AIST). The purity amount-of-substance fraction of raw material potassium perfluorooctane sulfonate (K-PFOS) was evaluated based on the results obtained using the freezing point depression method, and the purity mass fraction of the raw material was calculated using the average molar mass of impurities, the molar mass of K-PFOS, and the purity amount-of-substance fraction. The certified concentration of this CRM was obtained by multiplying the dilution ratio of the raw material in a prepared solution (methanol) determined from the gravimetric blending method by the purity of the raw material. The preparation concentration of K-PFOS as a certified value of NMIJ CRM 4220-a was determined to be 9.93 mg kg−1. A variety of phytocompounds contained in medical plants have been used as medication, including Kampo (traditional Japanese) medicine. Phytochemicals are one category of the chemical compounds mainly known as antioxidants, and recently, their anti-inflammatory effects in preventing chronic inflammation have received much attention. Here, we present a narrative review of the health-promotion and disease-prevention effects of phytochemicals, including polyphenols, the latter of which are abundant in onions, oranges, tea, soybeans, turmeric, cacao, and grapes, along with the synergetic effects of vitamin D. A phenomenon currently gaining popularity in Japan is finding non-disease conditions, so-called ME-BYO (mibyou) and treating them before they develop into illnesses. In addition to lifestyle-related diseases such as metabolic syndrome and obesity, dementia and frailty, commonly found in the elderly, are included as underlying conditions. These conditions are typically induced by chronic inflammation and might result in multiple organ failure or cancer if left untreated. Maintaining gut microbiota is important for suppressing (recently increasing) intestinal disorders and for upregulating immunity. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the interest in phytochemicals and vitamin D for disease prevention increased, as viral and bacterial infection to the lung causes fatal inflammation, and chronic inflammation induces pulmonary fibrosis. Furthermore, sepsis is a disorder inducing severe organ failure by the infection of microbes, with a high mortality ratio in non-coronary ICUs. However, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) working using natural immunity suppress sepsis at the early stage. The intake of phytochemicals and vitamin D enhances anti-inflammatory effects, upregulates immunity, and reduces the risk of chronic disorders by means of keeping healthy gut microbiota. Evidence acquired during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed that daily improvement and prevention of underlying conditions, in terms of lifestyle-related diseases, is very important because they increase the risk of infectious diseases. High entropy alloys (HEAs) have been developed as a new class of structural materials that consist of multicomponent elements with an approximately equiatomic ratio for increasing the mixing entropy to stabilize the solid solution phase. HEA for biomedical applications (BioHEA) was first developed in Japan; HEA comprising nonbiotoxic elements was specifically designed, demonstrating excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, elemental segregation, often observed in BioHEAs, hinders the inherent functions derived from high entropy effects and solid solution hardening. In this review article, elemental homogenization and functionalization of BioHEAs utilized by ultra-rapid cooling via laser-powder bed fusion and the characteristics of these BioHEAs, especially focusing on their excellent properties for biomedical applications, are introduced. Energy systems using renewables with adequate energy carriers are needed for sustainability. Before accelerating technology implementation for the transition to the new energy system, region‐specific implementation effects should be carefully examined as a system. In this study, we aim to analyze an energy system using hydrogen as an energy carrier with the approach of combining life cycle assessment and a regional energy simulation model. The model calculates the emissions, such as CO2, nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and volatile organic compounds, and their impacts on human health, social assets, primary production, and an integrated index. The analysis quantitatively presented various environmental impacts by region, life cycle stage, and impact category. Climate change was dominant on the integrated index while the other impact categories were also important. Fuel cell vehicles were effective in mitigating local air pollution, especially in high‐population regions where many people are adversely affected. Although technology implementation contributes to mitigating environmental impacts at locations of energy users, it also has possibilities to have negative impacts at locations of device manufacturing and raw material processing. The definition of the regional division was also an important factor in energy system design because the final results of life cycle assessments are highly sensitive to region‐specific characteristics. The proposed region‐specific analysis is expected to support local governments and technology developers in designing appropriate energy systems for regions and building marketing plans for specific targets.
