He died on November 23, 2004, when he was swept off a breakwater by a giant wave while working on a renewal project at Ashdod Port, south of Tel Aviv, Israel. On April 21, 2004 a week after U.S. President George W. Bush's well-choreographed White House meeting with "man of peace" Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, the Washington Report visited the offices of Congressman Nick Rahall, one of the few straight-talkers on Capitol Hill. President Bush had just reversed longstanding U.S. and international policies regarding Israel's illegal settlements and the Palestinian right of return. To add insult to injury, Senator John Kerry, the candidate who could capture the "anyone but Bush vote," tried to cut into the dance and outdo Bush's praise of Sharon's "peace plan."

After serving nearly 18 years in an Israeli prison—11½of them in solitary confinement, Mordechai Vanunu should be a free man on April 21, 2004. Now 49 years old, he has spent the prime of his life locked in a 6-foot by 9-foot cell in Israel's Ashkelon prison for blowing the whistle on Israel's secret nuclear arsenal. As his release date nears, Vanunu is said to be in good spirits. He knows he did the right thing by telling Israelis and the rest of the world what his country was up to, and he looks forward to a new beginning perhaps moving to the United States, where his adoptive parents live, and becoming a history teacher.

The Institute for Research: Middle East Policy (IRmep) held a Capitol Hill Forum on November 26, at the Rayburn House Congressional Office Building to discuss the likelihood that former American advisers to Israel have turned their 1996 policy plan for the Jewish state into today's U.S. policy used to invade Iraq and bully the rest of the Middle East. Among the paper's recommendations were toppling the government of Iraq, rolling back Syria and Iran, and electrifying support for Israel in the U.S. Congress in exchange for new missile defense contract opportunities. Saying he found it stunning that the same leaders now writing and shaping the U.S. policy have a history of looking out for Israel's interests, Farha noted that the decision to strike Iraq had been made even before 9/11, in accordance with the, Clean Break, plan.

Since its establishment, Israel has refused to assume responsibility in any way for the Palestinian refugee problem it engendered. Israeli leaders always have declared that allowing Palestinians and their descendants to return to their homes or property inside Israel would be suicidal and would destroy the Jewish nature of the state.
