Urban flooding poses a significant challenge to the rapidly growing Indian cities. Low-impact development strategies such as green roofs have shown the potential to reduce urban flooding. However, their performance assessment significantly varies across different studies. Therefore, the study's primary objective is to evaluate green roofs in the Indian context. For this evaluation, the green roofs are assessed based on building-level implementation scenarios for a high-density urban area in India for 25%,50%, and 75% application rates and different rainfall intensities (2,3 and 4-h duration and 2,5,10 and 25-year frequencies). Secondly, to probe the variations in the green roof performance across studies, uncertainty contributions to the runoff reduction from different parameters are quantified. The results show that green roofs can reduce up to 62% of flood volume and 24% of runoff. However, they are reasonably effective only beyond 25% application rates. Further, rainfall intensity contributes the most to the uncertainty of runoff reduction from green roofs. This uncertainty assessment implies that localized evaluation of green roofs depending on local rainfall conditions is required for city-wide policy planning. Photovoltaics panels are generally used on rooftop for electricity generation. However, installation of PV on the rooftop also has potential impact on the heating and cooling load of the building. This work studied these indirect benefits of rooftop PV panels by conducting experiments in Raipur, India, and compared the results with the exposed roof. Further, mathematical model is presented to analyze the annual effect of PV shading in terms of thermal load saving and power generation. Annual variation of cooling/heating load, PV power generation and overall energy-saving efficiency index is presented for different climatic zones of India. Average annual reduction in the roof and ceiling temperatures for different cities are in the range 6.05–10.96 °C and 3.94–7.15 °C, respectively. Annual cooling load reduced by 70.33–94.37%. Although PV panels shading shows negative impact during the winter season by increasing the heating load of building in all the climatic zones, the overall thermal load of building may reduce up to 22.76–74.07%. Furthermore, the overall energy-saving efficiency index varies from 21.27 to 25.12%, with maximum efficiency observed for Jodhpur city followed by Raipur. Precise and reliable runoff forecasting is crucial for water resources planning and management. The present study was conducted to test the applicability of different data-driven techniques including artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF) and M5P models for runoff forecasting for the lead time of 1 day and 2 days in the Koyna River basin, India. The best input variables for the development of the models were selected by applying the Gamma test (GT). Two different scenarios were considered to select the input variables for 2 days ahead runoff forecasting. In the first scenario, the output of 1 day ahead runoff (t + 1) was not used as an input while it was also used as an input along with other input variables for the development of the models in the second scenario. For 2 days ahead runoff forecasting, the models developed by adopting the second scenario performed more accurately than that of the first scenario. The RF model performed the best for 1 day ahead runoff forecasting with root mean square error (RMSE), coefficient of efficiency (CE), correlation coefficient (r) and coefficient of determination (R2) values of 168.94 m3/s, 0.67, 0.84 and 0.704, respectively, during the test period. For 2 days ahead runoff forecasting, RF and ANN models performed the best in the first and second scenario, respectively. In 2 days ahead runoff forecasting, RMSE, CE, r and R2 values were observed to be 169.72 m3/s, 0.67, 0.84, 0.7023 and 148.55 m3/s, 0.74, 0.87, 0.76 in the first and second scenarios, respectively, during the test period. Finally, the results revealed that the addition of 1 day ahead runoff forecast increased the forecast accuracy of 2 days ahead runoff forecasts. With rise in population growth and increasing trend towards urbanization, urban spaces have become 'hot spots' for intensive resource use including water, energy and food (WEF). Thus, along with food production, food management from consumption side is equally important to address the issue of WEF resource scarcity. An analysis of urban food management in India was carried out through systematic study of different government documents. In-depth content analysis across five sectors, namely water, energy, food, urban and environment, was carried out to find parameters for urban food management strategies having linkage with WEF resources. The study identified six parameters under two categories, namely city region food systems (urban/peri-urban agriculture, green roof technology, urban farmers market) and managing food wastes (reducing food wastes, compost from waste, energy from wastes). The analysis revealed that urban food management in India is focused on managing food wastes through solid waste management strategies (compost and energy production). City region food system and role it plays in optimizing WEF nexus need the attention of policy makers. The study concludes that a paradigm shift is required towards integrated urban WEF policy to attain the goals of sustainable urban development in the developing nations of Global South. Due to frequent pluvial flooding in different urban and peri-urban catchments worldwide, understanding the flooding situation is necessary for effective flood management. However, limited hydrological data availability, for example, lack of discharge information at required spatiotemporal scale or unavailability of local rating curve, can hinder modeling urban pluvial flooding and extracting useful information for flood mitigation. To deal with this situation, the physically-based Variable Parameter Muskingum Stage-routing (VPMS) module was coupled with the popular Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) using the GIS-derived morphological features of a typical urban and peri-urban catchment in eastern India. The study further explored the effect of urban channel representation in the SWMM-VPMS coupled model on the catchment response for the monsoon periods of the years 2009, 2011, and 2014 and confirmed the better performance of high-resolution channel representation with a Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) of 0.86, mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.24 m, and percentage bias (PBias) of −2.33% compared to low-resolution channel representation with NSE, MAE, and PBias of 0.85, 0.23 m, and −2.95% , respectively. Further, this coupled model was applied to understand the flooding situation across various channels considering conditions without Low-impact Development (LID) for 2-h and 3-h design rainfalls under 1-year, 2-year, 5-year, and 10-year return periods. Subsequently, the effect of implementing green roof (GR) and bioretention cell (BRC) as LID techniques was evaluated in mitigating pluvial urban flooding. The threat of climate change is forcing the world to decarbonize all economic sectors. Ammonia primarily used for fertilizer production and a potential, 'hydrogen carrier' currently accounts for ~27% of global hydrogen consumption and ~1% of global greenhouse gas emissions. In this analysis, we assess the techno-economic potential of ammonia production using onshore wind, open-field photovoltaic and batteries for both domestic usage and export scenarios in India, which is currently one of the world's largest producer and importer of ammonia. Our results reveal that India's potential can comfortably satisfy global ammonia demand with lowest ammonia costs of 723 EUR/t NH3 and 765 EUR/t NH3 for the domestic and export scenario, respectively. To compete with conventional ammonia production a carbon tax of 224–335 €/t CO2 would be required. Vegetation cover and population density and its variability characteristics in National Capital Region, NCR, India have major effects on thermal environments, mainly on land surface temperature (LST). There are very few meteorological stations to record the surface temperature in earlier periods, and they may not be the true representation for NCR region. In such cases, LST derived from thermal satellite data is useful to study the LST variability across the NCR region, an important parameter for urban micro-climate. Satellite images from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) used to obtain Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and LST map to determine the impact of those parameters on LST variability. Higher NDVI reveals the lower LST and vice versa. The high LST-NDVI negative correlation was observed during monsoon season. Statistical analysis of nighttime LST with population density shows that population growth tends to lead to urban LST rise or Urban Heat Island (UHI) strength, as well as effects NCR micro-climate. The high population density is one of the key contributing factors for NCR's high surface temperature, UHI intensity and also micro-climate. The study shows that the seasonal distribution of LST needs to be overcome with the high vegetation cover and some other appropriate mitigation measures. One way of mitigating such seasonal peripheral thermal effects could be to adopt better cropping practices in order to minimize the agricultural fallow period and promoting green roofing concepts in urban areas and using porous concrete for construction which might help to mitigate impacts of high LST in urban areas of NCR. This work proposes a novel hybrid renewable-based cold production system consisting of an innovative yet simple design of evacuated solar collectors integrated with a biomass heater, thermal storage tanks, and an absorption machine. The optimal design, sizing of the components, and operating conditions of the hybrid system are investigated via thorough techno-economic modeling and dual-objective optimizations for a case study in India. In addition, the assessments cover different designs of biomass heaters and various biomass types. Finally, using the coefficient of performance (COP), the levelized cost of cooling (LCOC), and the emission index as the prioritization parameters, the most efficient, the most cost-effective, and the most environmentally-friendly configurations are indicated. The results show that integrating evacuated plate collectors with a specific design of biomass-heater burning sugarcane baggas is the most appropriate option from all aspects. According to the optimization results, at the best solution point, emission index and LCOC are, respectively, 440.62 kg/MWh and 47.1 USD/MWh. Moreover, the scatter distribution of major decision parameters indicates that while the volume of the hot storage tank is not a sensitive parameter, the chiller temperature and volume of the cold storage tank should be kept at their lowest bounds. However, the selection of suitable PCM for a given climatic condition becomes important for the effective thermal performance of the building envelope. In the present work, based on the key thermal responses i.e. total heat gain, time lag, and decrement factor, a new Measure of Key Response index (MKR index) is introduced that is used as an evaluation criterion for selecting a suitable PCM for building envelope. For the same, a numerical analysis is carried out for seven cities representing different climatic zones of India during the six months of the summer season from March to August. Seven commercially available PCMs are considered for the analysis. The most suitable PCM for each city is determined based on the MKR index. Open drying is practiced for drying Capsicum frutescens in the cottage industries of India. In order to improve drying, an experimental set-up of solar rack dryer is constructed and studied different heat transfer augmentation techniques. A passive heating coil extended from the header of a water-in-glass evacuated tube coupled with parabolic trough is used to augment the heat in the collector section of the dryer. The drying rate in rack dryer is found to be 62% higher than that of open air drying of green chillies. Moreover, the drying rate in augmented rack dryer is found to be 7% higher than that of rack dryer. In addition to this, an effective design for the dryer cabinet with respect to air circulation is arrived through computational fluid dynamics analysis. Through this new design, the drying rate is improved further by 3%. Based on energy analysis, the specific energy consumption during the drying of this particular product using the augmented dryer is found to be 1.27 kWh/kg. Coastal cities of southern peninsular India are characterized by highly seasonal rainfall during a few weeks of a year, a long dry-weather period, flat topography, and shallow groundwater levels. This study investigated the challenges and opportunities prevailing in implementation of low-impact development techniques (LID) as hydrologic restoration measures in catchments of the coastal city of Chennai. Rainfall patterns, which were evaluated with precipitation concentration index (PCI), showed that rainfall in the city is irregularly distributed, with only 3.5–4 months of rainfall occurrence in a year. Catchment-scale numerical modeling of green roof and rainwater harvesting (RWH) structures demonstrated that RWHs are an efficient method of stormwater management in the study area. Vegetation-based LIDs, however, could not be adopted due to their irrigation water demands, which would add to the drinking water demand in the region. Further challenges in the implementation of LIDs because of extreme weather conditions and the shallow ground water table, and potential solutions, were discussed. We concluded that LIDs retrofitted with hydrologic interventions such as managed aquifer recharge and green roofs can provide economic benefits to the low- to middle-income population in the study area. Anchored in the resource‐based view theory, the objective of this research is to empirically analyse the behavioural factors affecting the green supply chain management (GCSM) performance in a fast‐growing emerging economy by taking an empirical data set of 101 responses from personnel in the mining sector. Behavioural factors in green supply chains are still a critical challenge—not yet a well‐explored academic subject—when the focus is on the mining industry of emerging economies like India; the lack of studies in this field could be a factor preventing the Indian mining industry becoming more green. In terms of methodology, original survey data were processed through AMOS 4.0, adopted for assessing the causal connection among the six constructs, that is, top management support, teamwork, workplace culture, resistance to change, green innovation, and green motivation. We further explore the input from the human side of GCSM by highlighting that top management support and green motivation are the most crucial behavioural factors that influence GCSM in the Indian mining sector. Hence urban microclimatic studies using numeric simulation software to find out adaption strategies are attracting the great attention of researchers and policymaker. Number of scientists carried out their research on this topic using different tools and technique whereas ENVI-met model is the most widely used simulation tools. The present study intended to examine the implication of green infrastructure of the town on enhanced microclimatic condition and to evaluate the best suitable mitigation strategy modelling cool city with ENVI-met software (V4). Five greening condition such as existing UHI condition (C1), 100% greening of roof (C2), 100% greening of roof and walls (C3), 50% greening of roof and walls (C4) and: Plantation at suitable area with 50% greening of roof and walls (C5) have been taken into consideration for the microclimate simulation for all three selected sites. Among these five conditions, C3 for the open mid-rise and compact low-rise, C5 for the open low-rise are identified as one of the most suitable strategies which can reduce the air temperature of peak hours by 2.6 °C, 1.33 °C and 1.87 °C respectively. These models are validated by simple linear regression between simulated and existing air temperature in case of existing UHI condition (C1) and in all the cases coefficient of determination value is high such as for open mid-rise, compact low-rise and open low-rise, it is 0.92, 0.92 and 0.75 respectively. The main context and aim of the research paper is to report the findings of the empirical study of the effect of government policy in implementing Grid connected Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic in Educational Institutions in the state of Karnataka, India. Urban floods have become more frequent and devastating in recent decades. Low impact developments (LIDs) have gained wide acceptance as a more sustainable and effective technique for mitigating urban flooding. This study examines the hydrological control effects of LIDs on mitigating runoff depth and peak runoff in the context of climate change for four micro-watersheds (A, B, C and D) in northeast India. In addition, attempts have been made to determine whether redesigning the existing drainage helps reduce runoff in the study area. Results show that redesigning the drainage system has resulted only in 2.5–3.6% reduction in runoff depth for the four micro-watersheds. LIDs were effective in managing the stormwater in all four micro-watersheds. Among the four LIDs considered (green roof, permeable pavements, infiltration trenches, and rain barrels), the green roof showed the highest percentage reduction in runoff characteristics. Climate change analysis has shown a significant increase in the runoff characteristics in all four watersheds. For watersheds A, B, C, and D, the green roof effectively reduced runoff by 30%–38%, 83%, 50%, and 34%, respectively. Implementing appropriate passive design strategies at the early design stage of a building is a viable option for energy conservation in buildings. While literature is plenty on various passive solutions, a systematic approach for integrating all feasible options in a given building for a given location is lacking. As part of achieving energy-efficiency in residential buildings, the present study has analyzed the energy-saving potential and economic viability of adopting passive energy conservation measures (ECMs) on a detached family house in warm-humid climate of South India. Individual ECMs were assessed based on their energy-saving potential and cost-effectiveness, and the selected options were integrated in the building design. The modeling and simulations were performed by a reliable software (DesignBuilder, V.6) to estimate the annual energy consumption of the building with and without ECMs. The individual and combined contributions of ECMs in reducing the building's energy performance index (EPI) were quantified, and their economic viability was assessed in terms of discounted payback period (DPP). After finalizing all the viable passive design strategies, two options were proposed for the roof: cool roof painting and green roof. The results showed that about 34% reduction in EPI was possible by integrating the proposed ECMs with cool roof, while it was about 32% with green roof; the corresponding DPPs for the additional investment were estimated to be 4.3 years and 5.73 years. The present study provides a systematic approach for incorporating passive design options at the early design stage of air-conditioned residential buildings on the basis of energy performance and cost-effectiveness. Urban surface runoff management via best management practices (BMP) and low impact development (LID) has earned significant recognition owing to positive environmental and ecological impacts. However, due to the complexity of the parameters involved, the estimation of LID efficiency in attenuating the urban surface runoff at the watershed scale is challenging. A planning analysis of employing Green Roofs and Infiltration Trenches as BMPs/LIDs practices for urban surface runoff control is presented in this study. A multi-objective optimization decision-making framework is established by coupling SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) with NSGA-II models to check the performance of BMPs/LIDs concerning the cost-benefit analysis of LID at the watershed scale. Two urbanized areas belonging to Central Delhi in India were used as case studies. The results showed that the SWMM model is useful in simulating optimization problems for managing urban surface runoff. The optimum scenarios efficiently minimized the urban runoff volume while maintaining the BMPs/LIDs implementation costs and size. With BMPs/LIDs implementation, the reduction in runoff volume increases as expenses increase initially; however, there is no noticeable reduction in flood volume after a certain threshold. Contrasted with the haphazard arrangement of BMPs/LIDs, the proposed approach demonstrates 22%–24% runoff reductions for the same expenditures in watershed 1 and 23%–26% in watershed 2. The result of the study provides insights into planning and management of the urban surface runoff control with LID practices. The proposed framework assists the hydrologists in optimum selection and placements of BMPs/LIDs practices to acquire the most extreme ecological advantages with the least expenses. Green roof is a passive cooling technique that stops incoming solar radiation from reaching the building structure below. Many studies have been conducted over the past 10 years to consider the potential building energy benefits of green roofs and have shown that they can offer benefits in energy reduction for winter heating as well as summer cooling. Green roofs have many benefits over conventional roofs: they reduce storm water run-off, the heat island effect in cities and energy requirements for cooling; all of this while sequestering some CO2 from the atmosphere. But because of their expense, the building industry has yet to fully embrace their large-scale implementation. Over the summer', two test structures, one with a green roof and the other with an RCC roof, were built and tested at the Ujjain Engineering College, Ujjain, RGPV University, to determine their cooling potential. Demand for cooling is increasing globally as a result of economic and population growth, as well as higher temperatures. Emerging economies like India contribute to half of this growth. Adaptation of cities to changing climatic conditions is needed, along with a reduction in cooling demand to limit the greenhouse emissions that are affecting climate change. This study proposes a methodology of analysis and adaptation of a traditional dwelling, the Pol House, in the Indian city of Ahmedabad. The use of various low carbon strategies to improve passive survivability, and increase indoor and outdoor comfort is studied through a simulation model. Results show that passive strategies like increased insulation in walls and roof, a seasonal shading schedule for the windows and courtyard, when coupled with increased air movement using simple fans have proven to be very effective. Indoor comfort time increased from 39% to 90–100% and Wet Bulb Globe Temperature in comfortable categories increased between 9% and 16% in all the rooms, during the periods analyzed. Incorporating insulation material in the building envelope is one of the simple yet effective passive techniques aimed at mitigating the energy consumption in buildings. The development and utilization of sustainable materials with heat insulating capacity as an alternative to synthetic insulations is a promising path towards reduced carbon footprint of buildings. The insulation potential of straw, an agricultural waste, in the context of the wide-ranging climate of India is the focus of the current work. Cooling and/or heating load analysis over 24 h of a representative summer and winter day is performed through transient numerical analysis for five climatic zones of India. Three building envelope configurations possible with retrofitting straw insulation (placed on the outside or inside or equally on either side) over existing walls/roof are compared. Four different thicknesses (10, 20, 30 and 40 cm) of the straw insulation are considered for analysis. Recommendations of envelope configuration with insulation are proposed based on energy and cost savings for the different climatic zones. Overall, the case of straw insulation split on either side performs the best. Energy savings in the range of 67–96% is achievable with the addition of just 10 cm thick straw across different climatic zones. The paper attempts to explain how green training, an important human resource function, influences green creativity in the handicraft organisations. The mediating role of green dynamic capabilities and the moderating role of resource commitment are also examined. A survey of 211 handicraft managers is conducted to test the proposed hypotheses, followed by a qualitative approach in which cases of two handicraft organisations are examined. The findings of the study indicate that green training influences the organisations green creativity both directly and indirectly and that green dynamic capabilities further influence the green creativity indirectly via the moderating role of resource commitment to producing superior creative outcomes. The study is the first to assess green creativity as an outcome of green training.
