Introduction The problem of transcoding is recurrent when researchers wish to link occupational data from cohorts to Job-Exposure Matrices (JEMs) which were not set up in the same classifications. The Occupational Asthma-specific JEM (OAsJEM) is a JEM developed for assessing exposure to agents known at risk for asthma for jobs coded with ISCO88 occupation classification. To apply the OAsJEM in the CONSTANCES cohort, in which jobs and industries were coded with French PCS2003 and NAF2008 classifications respectively, we developed a crosswalk to convert jobs from PCS2003 into ISCO88 classification. Methods This work was carried out by 2 skilled coders and 1 novice coder who have worked independently by using different tools and transcoding strategies defined a priori. Consensus meetings were organized with skilled coders to define the final crosswalk. This work was elaborated in 2 steps: (i) for 38 ISCO88 codes classified as potentially exposed to cleaning and disinfection products by the OAsJEM, and (ii) for all jobs from the ISCO88 classification. A comparison between the 3 initial coder's crosswalk proposals and the final crosswalk was made for the 38 ISCO codes in step (i). Results The final crosswalk provided 998 matches between the 482 4-digit PCS2003 codes, 308 4-digit ISCO88 codes, and 31 3-digit ISCO88 codes. Information regarding the NAF2008 industry classification was also used in some cases to improve the final crosswalk. For the selected 38 ISCO88 codes, the final crosswalk provided 110 combinations, but the number of proposed ISCO88–PCS2003 couples by each of the 3 coders varied greatly from 68 to 153. In addition, an important variability between the 3 coders were observed among the number of common combinations between the initial coder's proposals and the final crosswalk (from 47% to 78%). Discussion We have developed a crosswalk specifically for an application of the OAsJEM in population-based surveys using the PCS2003 occupation classification. The development of this crosswalk is of great interest for the use of OAsJEM on the data of the CONSTANCES cohort and on any other survey with occupational data coded according to the French classifications. This OAsJEM crosswalk could be used by other teams to evaluate occupational exposures known to be at risk of asthma from occupational calendars coded with French classifications. Aim: To assess the prevalence of severe periodontitis based on the population‐based CONSTANCES cohort using a validated self‐reported questionnaire. Materials and Methods: Individuals were selected from the adult population in France using a random sampling scheme. Analyses were restricted to those invited in 2013–2014 who completed the periodontal health questionnaire at the 2017 follow‐up. The risk of severe periodontitis was assessed using the periodontal screening score (PESS) and weighting coefficients were applied to provide representative results in the general French population. Results: The study included 19,859 participants (9204 men, mean age: 52.8 ± 12.6 years). Based on a PESS ≥ 5, 7106 participants were at risk of severe periodontitis, corresponding to a weighted prevalence of 31.6% (95% confidence interval: 30.6%–32.7%). This prevalence was higher among participants aged 55 and over, those with lower socio‐economic status as well as current smokers, e‐cigarette users and heavy drinkers. Among individuals at risk of severe periodontitis, only 18.8% (17.3%–20.4%) thought they had gum disease, although 50.5% (48.6%–52.5%) reported that their last dental visit was less than 6 months. Conclusions: The present survey indicates that (1) self‐reported severe periodontitis is highly prevalent with marked disparities between groups in the general French adult population, and (2) periodontitis could frequently be under‐diagnosed given the low awareness. The present study is about sensitive issues in history teaching that have probably been experienced by most teachers in the field. We conducted a questionnaire study in Austria, Belarus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Serbia and The Netherlands to assess which issues were experienced as sensitive in class, what the reasons were for sensitivity, and what personal and institutional conditions might help teachers in overcoming such situations. Results were analysed from the perspective of both collective and individual differences. At the collective level it was found that contrary to previous studies teachers tended to attribute low sensitivity to difficult histories, to teach sensitive issues frequently and they reported little intervention and few sanctions from peers or superiors. Historical issue sensitivity was found to have some relationship to national political climate, external threat and teacher organization. From an individual difference perspective it appeared that sensitivity was not only a characteristic of an issue or topic, but was also bound to the sensibility of the teachers and their perceptions of the teaching setting. The findings are discussed in the context of nations' self-image and the positive side-effects of analysing sensitive issues in class, with an emphasis on teacher perception, agency and need for support.

This study explores the silencing and voicing of sensitive topics in history education from a cross-national and multilevel perspective. In this mixed-method study, we undertook a quantitative analysis of a 'teaching sensitive issues' questionnaire and qualitative analyses of history curricula and teachers' verbal responses. The findings show that most respondents were aware of societal and self-silencing but were also committed to voicing and giving a voice to pupils. Focusing on the issues found to be most sensitive -- immigration and Islam -- in Germany, Austria, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Israel, the analysis of national curricula indicates a climate of 'voicing' rather than silencing. Analysis of teachers' responses showed strong awareness of the relationship between the sensitivity of the history of immigration and that of Islam and the relationship between pupil diversity and self-silencing on these issues. It appears that, in some cases, apprehension of pupils' voices led teachers to self-silence.

Background Health policy-making require careful assessment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) epidemiology to develop efficient and cost-effective care strategies. The aim of the present study was to use the RENALGO-EXPERT algorithm to estimate the global prevalence of CKD in France. Methods An expert group developed the RENALGO-EXPERT algorithm based on healthcare consumption. This algorithm has been applied to the French National Health claims database (SNDS), where no biological test findings are available to estimate a national CKD prevalence for the years 2018–2021. The CONSTANCES cohort (+219 000 adults aged 18–69 with one CKD-EPI eGFR) was used to discuss the limit of using health claims data. Results Between 2018 and 2021, the estimated prevalence in the SNDS increased from 8.1% to 10.5%. The RENALGO-EXPERT algorithm identified 4.5% of the volunteers in the CONSTANCES as CKD. The RENALGO-EXPERT algorithm had a positive predictive value of 6.2% and negative predictive value of 99.1% to detect an eGFR<60 ml/min/1.73 m². Half of 252 false positive cases (ALGO+, eGFR > 90) had been diagnosed with kidney disease during hospitalization, and the other half based on healthcare consumption suggestive of a 'high-risk' profile; 95% of the 1661 false negatives (ALGO−, eGFR < 60) had an eGFR between 45 and 60 ml/min, half had medication and two-thirds had biological exams possibly linked to CKD. Half of them had a hospital stay during the period but none had a diagnosis of kidney disease. Conclusions Our result is in accordance with other estimations of CKD prevalence in the general population. Analysis of diverging cases (FP and FN) suggests using health claims data have inherent limitations. Such an algorithm can identify patients whose care pathway is close to the usual and specific CKD pathways. The individual results of SARS-CoV-2 serological tests measured after the first pandemic wave of 2020 cannot be directly interpreted as a probability of having been infected. Plus, these results are usually returned as a binary or ternary variable, relying on predefined cut-offs. We propose a Bayesian mixture model to estimate individual infection probabilities, based on 81,797 continuous anti-spike IgG tests from Euroimmun collected in France after the first wave. This approach used serological results as a continuous variable, and was therefore not based on diagnostic cut-offs. Cumulative incidence, which is necessary to compute infection probabilities, was estimated according to age and administrative region. In France, we found that a "negative" or a "positive" test, as classified by the manufacturer, could correspond to a probability of infection as high as 61.8% or as low as 67.7%, respectively. "Indeterminate" tests encompassed probabilities of infection ranging from 10.8 to 96.6%. Our model estimated tailored individual probabilities of SARS-CoV-2 infection based on age, region, and serological result. This cohort study evaluates whether better baseline cardiovascular health and improvement of cardiovascular health over time are associated with a lower risk of both incident depressive symptoms and unfavorable trajectories of depressive symptoms. Importance: Cardiovascular health may be used for prevention of depressive symptoms. However, data on the association of cardiovascular health across midlife with depressive symptoms are lacking. Objective: To evaluate whether better baseline cardiovascular health and improvement of cardiovascular health over time are associated with a lower risk of both incident depressive symptoms and unfavorable trajectories of depressive symptoms. Design, Setting, and Participants: Participants without depressive symptoms were included from a prospective community-based cohort in France (GAZEL cohort). Cardiovascular health examinations occurred in 1990 and 1997 and assessment of depressive symptoms in 1997 and every 3 years thereafter until 2015. Data were analyzed from January to October 2022. Exposures: Number of cardiovascular health metrics (smoking, body mass index, physical activity, diet, blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol) at an intermediate or ideal level in 1997 (range, 0-7) and 7-year change in cardiovascular health between 1990 and 1997. Main Outcomes and Measures: Primary outcome was incident depressive symptoms (20-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies–Depression Scale [CES-D] score of 17 or greater in men or 23 or greater in women); secondary outcome was trajectories of depressive symptoms scores. Trajectories included consistently low scores, moderately elevated scores, low starting then increasing scores, moderately high starting, increasing, then remitting scores, and moderately high starting then increasing scores. Results: Of 6980 included patients, 1671 (23.9%) were women, and the mean (SD) age was 53.3 (3.5) years. During a follow-up spanning 19 years after 1997, 1858 individuals (26.5%) had incident depressive symptoms. Higher baseline cardiovascular health in 1997 and improvement in cardiovascular health over 7 years were each associated with lower risk of depressive symptoms (odds ratio [OR] per additional metric at intermediate or ideal level at baseline, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.84-0.91; OR per 1 higher metric at intermediate or ideal level over 7 years, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.86-0.96). Also, better cardiovascular health was associated with lower risk of unfavorable depressive symptoms trajectories. Compared with the consistently low score trajectory, the lowest risks were observed for the low starting then increasing score trajectory (OR per additional metric at intermediate or ideal level at baseline, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.64-0.76; OR per 1 higher metric at intermediate or ideal level over 7 years, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.68-0.79) and the moderately high starting then increasing score trajectory (OR per additional metric at intermediate or ideal level at baseline, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.64-0.79; OR per 1 higher metric at intermediate or ideal level over 7 years, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.64-0.77). Conclusions and Relevance: In this prospective community-based cohort study of adults, higher cardiovascular health was associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms over time. Caddo Indian villages occupied a region along an extensive trade network that stretched well into the North American South and West. Before the Spanish began to clamp down on French traders in their second attempt to establish a presence in East Texas in the 1750's, the Indians of the region had already enjoyed extensive trade relations with the French. Beginning in 1705, the Caddo established trade relations with the French trader Louis Juchereau de St. Denis. St. Denis first traded much-needed guns and ammunition with the Natchitoches Caddo and the Kadohadacho Caddo chiefdoms in return for salt and horses. Later, he lived among the Hasinai Caddo chiefdom for a few months. St. Denis conformed to Caddo trade demands and provided necessary trade goods and, most important, friendship, thus creating a bond between the French and the Hasinai. The strong ties between the French and the Caddo lasted throughout the eighteenth century, undermining Spanish efforts to develop their own trade systems with the Indians. When the Spaniards finally established relations with the Caddo, Spanish traders had to respect Caddo trade traditions and adopt the trading practices that preceded the Spanish fortification of East Texas. By the turn of the nineteenth century, the Hasinai reestablished ties with the Spanish and focused the exchange of goods in East Texas. This renewed trade relationship undermined trade between the Indians and the French Louisianans. With these ties, came new spaces of trade--the Hasinai traded with the Spanish out of Nacogdoches, Texas, and the Kadohadacho continued to trade with the Spanish out of Louisiana. The Hasinai are at the center of the story of change in East Texas during this era. Because this article focuses on Nacogdoches as the main center of trade in the region, it covers the period between the Spanish settlement of the town in 1779 and in 1819, the year that New Spain and the United States signed the Adams-Onis Treaty that formally outlined the Texas-Louisiana border. This study provides trends in obesity prevalence in adults from 2013 to 2016 in France. 63,582 men and women from independent samples upon inclusion from the Constances cohort were included. Anthropometrics were measured at Health Screening Centers and obesity defined as a Body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2; obesity classes according to BMI are as follows: class 1 [30–34.9]; class 2 [35–39.9]; class 3 [≥ 40 kg/m2]. Linear trends across obesity classes by sex and age groups were examined in regression models and percentage point change from 2013 to 2016 for each age category calculated. All analyses accounted for sample weights for non-response, age and sex-calibrated to the French population. Prevalence of obesity ranged from 14.2 to 15.2% and from 14 to 15.3% in women and men respectively from 2013 to 2016. Class 1 obesity category prevalence was the only one to increase significantly across survey years in both men and women (p for linear trend = 0.04 and 0.01 in women and men respectively). The only significant increase for obesity was observed in the age group 18–29 y in both women and men (+ 2.71% and + 3.26% point increase respectively, equivalent to an approximate rise of 50% in women and 93% in men, p = 0.03 and 0.02 respectively). After adjustment for survey non-response and for age and sex distribution, the results show that class 1 obesity prevalence has significantly increased in both women and men from 2013 to 2016, and only in young adults in a representative sample of the French population aged 18–69 years old. Exploring the role of changing climates in human evolution is currently impeded by a scarcity of climatic information at the same temporal scale as the human behaviors documented in archaeological sites. This is mainly caused by high uncertainties in the chronometric dates used to correlate long-term climatic records with archaeological deposits. One solution is to generate climatic data directly from archaeological materials representing human behavior. Here we use oxygen isotope measurements of Bos/Bison tooth enamel to reconstruct summer and winter temperatures in the Late Pleistocene when Neandertals were using the site of La Ferrassie. Our results indicate that, despite the generally cold conditions of the broader period and despite direct evidence for cold features in certain sediments at the site, Neandertals used the site predominantly when climatic conditions were mild, similar to conditions in modern day France. We suggest that due to millennial scale climate variability, the periods of human activity and their climatic characteristics may not be representative of average conditions inferred from chronological correlations with long-term climatic records. These results highlight the importance of using direct routes, such as the high-resolution archives in tooth enamel from anthropogenically accumulated faunal assemblages, to establish climatic conditions at a human scale. The grand abri at La Ferrassie (France) has been a key site for Palaeolithic research since the early part of the 20th century. It became the eponymous site for one variant of Middle Palaeolithic stone tools, and its sequence was used to define stages of the Aurignacian, an early phase of the Upper Palaeolithic. Several Neanderthal remains, including two relatively intact skeletons, make it one of the most important sites for the study of Neanderthal morphology and one of the more important data sets when discussing the Neanderthal treatment of the dead. However, the site has remained essentially undated. Our goal here is to provide a robust chronological framework of the La Ferrassie sequence to be used for broad regional models about human behaviour during the late Middle to Upper Palaeolithic periods. To achieve this goal, we used a combination of modern excavation methods, extensive geoarchaeological analyses, and radiocarbon dating. If we accept that Neanderthals were responsible for the Châtelperronian, then our results suggest an overlap of ca. 1600 years with the newly arrived Homo sapiens found elsewhere in France. OBJECTIVES We aimed to assess the hypertension (HTN) awareness and associated factors in France. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the CONSTANCES population-based cohort involving 87,808 volunteer participants included between 2012 and 2018. HTN was defined as average blood pressure (BP) over 140/90 or use of BP medication, awareness as self-reported HTN. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify the associated factors. RESULTS Overall, 27,160 hypertensive participants (men = 16,569) above 18 years old were analyzed. Hypertension awareness rate was 37.5%. In the multivariable regression model, awareness was predicted by female gender, age, prior cardiovascular disease (CVD), presence of diabetes mellitus (DM), presence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), level of education, and obesity or overweight. Older participants (P < 0.001), females (P < 0.001), participants with comorbidities (P < 0.001), were more likely to be aware when compared with younger participants, males and participants without comorbidities, respectively. The unawareness among participants without cardiometabolic factors (CMF, i.e., CVD, DM, CKD) was higher than participants with CMF (67% vs. 41%, respectively, P < 0.001). Moreover, some differences appeared in both genders in the association between awareness of HTN and health and lifestyle factors. CONCLUSION Our findings show that HTN awareness is low. Particular attention should be given to young men without comorbidities as these characteristics were predictors of poor awareness. Immediate action is required to improve HTN awareness in France. The plant component of Neanderthal subsistence and technology is not well documented, partially due to the preservation constraints of macrobotanical components. Phytoliths, however, are preserved even when other plant remains have decayed and so provide evidence for Neanderthal plant use and the environmental context of archaeological sites. Phytolith assemblages from Roc de Marsal, a Middle Paleolithic cave site in SW France, provide new insight into the relationship between Neanderthals and plant resources. Ninety-seven samples from all archaeological units and 18 control samples are analyzed. Phytoliths from the wood and bark of dicotyledonous plants are the most prevalent, but there is also a significant proportion of grass phytoliths in many samples. Phytolith densities are much greater in earlier layers, which is likely related to the presence of combustion features in those layers. These phytoliths indicate a warmer, wetter climate, whereas phytoliths from upper layers indicate a cooler, drier environment. Phytoliths recovered from combustion features indicate that wood was the primary plant fuel source, while grasses may have been used as surface preparations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background There are striking socioeconomic differences in life expectancy, but less is known about inequalities in healthy life expectancy and disease-free life expectancy. We estimated socioeconomic differences in health expectancies in four studies in England, Finland, France and Sweden. Methods We estimated socioeconomic differences in health expectancies using data drawn from repeated waves of the four cohorts for two indicators: (i) self-rated health and (ii) chronic diseases (cardiovascular, cancer, respiratory and diabetes). Socioeconomic position was measured by occupational position. Multistate life table models were used to estimate healthy and chronic disease-free life expectancy from ages 50 to 75. Results In all cohorts, we found inequalities in healthy life expectancy according to socioeconomic position. In England, both women and men in the higher positions could expect 82–83% of their life between ages 50 and 75 to be in good health compared to 68% for those in lower positions. The figures were 75% compared to 47–50% for Finland; 85–87% compared to 77–79% for France and 80–83% compared to 72–75% for Sweden. Those in higher occupational positions could expect more years in good health (2.1–6.8 years) and without chronic diseases (0.5–2.3 years) from ages 50 to 75. Conclusion There are inequalities in healthy life expectancy between ages 50 and 75 according to occupational position. These results suggest that reducing socioeconomic inequalities would make an important contribution to extending healthy life expectancy and disease-free life expectancy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives. To examine whether stressful job exposure to the public could be associated with having long-term benzodiazepine use. Methods. From the participants included between 2012 and 2016 in the French population-based CONSTANCES cohort, 13 934 men and 19 261 women declared a daily job exposure to the public and rated the frequency of stressful exposure. We examined benzodiazepine long-term use by using drug reimbursement administrative registries. Logistic regressions provided odds ratios (ORs) of benzodiazepine long-term use, with stratification for gender and adjustment for age, education, and area deprivation index. Occupational grade, job strain, depression, self-rated health, and alcohol use disorder were additional stratification variables. Results. Benzodiazepine long-term use was positively associated with stressful exposure to the public ("often or always" vs "rarely or never") in men (OR = 2.2; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.8, 2.8) and women (OR = 1.6; 95% CI = 1.4, 1.9), with dose-dependent relationships (P trends <.001). Adjustments and analyses in subgroups without other individual or environmental vulnerability factors led to similar results. Conclusions. Stressful job exposure to the public increases the risk of benzodiazepine long-term use. Prevention programs aiming at reducing the burden of benzodiazepine long-term use would benefit in targeting this specific population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mould development is a determinant of poor indoor air quality. Data on indoor mould contamination from nationwide population-based studies are scarce. We investigated determinants of mould contamination in the participants from the French CONSTANCES population-based cohort who answered a dedicated follow-up questionnaire in 2019. Participants reported mouldy odour, presence of visible mould and size of mouldy area (spots, <0.2 m2, [0.2 m2–1 m2], ]1 m2–3 m2] or >3 m2) in the bathroom, kitchen, living room and bedroom. Dwelling mouldy area size was defined by the maximum area in one of the four rooms. Logistic models were used to study cross-sectional associations between dwelling characteristics and mould contamination adjusted for dwelling type (house/flat), urbanicity and French deprivation index. Stratification by dwelling type, urban/rural areas and least/most deprived neighbourhood were performed. Analyses included 110,470 adults (mean age: 52 years, 54% women, 66% living in houses). Mouldy odour, visible mould and mouldy area size >3 m2 were reported in 2%, 22% and 0.3% of dwellings. Visible mould was more frequently reported in "Île-de-France" region and in flats than in houses. Heating difficulties, water damage, and occupant-surface ratio were significantly associated with mouldy area size (adjusted(a)OR between 1.58 and 7.30), whereas the presence of a ventilation system and opening the windows in winter were inversely associated (aOR between 0.31 and 0.78). Results did not change by using sum of mouldy area size as an alternative definition. Associations were slightly more evidenced in houses and in the most deprived neighbourhood. Almost one in five participants reported mould contamination in their dwelling. Aims: To investigate the association between alcohol consumption and different causes of work cessation and estimate the loss of occupational activity among high consumers compared with low consumers. Methods: From the prospective study of men employed in the French gas and electric company, 8442 men during a median follow-up of 8.4 years reported on their alcohol consumption. Information on work cessation was collected from the company administrative records. Hazard Ratios (HRs) by cause of work cessation (death, disability, retirement before or after age 55) were estimated using a competing risk method. Results: An increasing quantity of daily alcohol consumption was associated with an increased risk of death, disability and retirement before age 55 (P trend ≤ 0.01, = 0.03 and ≤ 0.01, respectively), but not of retirement after age 55 (P trend = 0.56). Moreover, compared with low consumption, moderate, high or very high daily intakes were associated with an increased risk of early work cessation (combination of the three causes: death, disability and retirement before age 55) (HR = 1.14, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.05–1.25; HR = 1.23, 95%CI = 1.12–1.35 and HR = 1.49, 95% CI = 1.15–1.92 respectively). Between ages 50 and 60,we estimated that high or very high consumers could gain 6.04 months of occupational activity if they drank like low consumers. Abstract: Aims: To estimate differences in the strength and shape of associations between alcohol use and diagnosis‐specific sickness absence. Design: A multi‐cohort study. Participants (n = 47 520) responded to a survey on alcohol use at two time‐points, and were linked to records of sickness absence. Diagnosis‐specific sickness absence was followed for 4–7 years from the latter survey. Setting and participants: From Finland, we had population cohort survey data from 1998 and 2003 and employee cohort survey data from 2000–02 and 2004. From France and the United Kingdom, we had employee cohort survey data from 1993 and 1997, and 1985–88 and 1991–94, respectively. Measurements: We used standard questionnaires to assess alcohol intake categorized into 0, 1–11 and > 11 units per week in women and 0, 1–34 and > 34 units per week in men. We identified groups with stable and changing alcohol use over time. We linked participants to records from sickness absence registers. Diagnoses of sickness absence were coded according to the International Classification of Diseases. Estimates were adjusted for sex, age, socio‐economic status, smoking and body mass index. Findings: Women who reported drinking 1–11 units and men who reported drinking 1–34 units of alcohol per week in both surveys were the reference group. Compared with them, women and men who reported no alcohol use in either survey had a higher risk of sickness absence due to mental disorders [rate ratio = 1.51, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.22–1.88], musculoskeletal disorders (1.22, 95% CI = 1.06–1.41), diseases of the digestive system (1.35, 95% CI = 1.02–1.77) and diseases of the respiratory system (1.49, 95% CI = 1.29–1.72). Women who reported alcohol consumption of > 11 weekly units and men who reported alcohol consumption of > 34 units per week in both surveys were at increased risk of absence due to injury or poisoning (1.44, 95% CI = 1.13–1.83). Conclusions: In Finland, France and the United Kingdom, people who report not drinking any alcohol on two occasions several years apart appear to have a higher prevalence of sickness absence from work with chronic somatic and mental illness diagnoses than those drinking below a risk threshold of 11 units per week for women and 34 units per week for men. Aims We examined differences in sickness absence in relation to at-risk drinking and abstinence, taking into account potential changes in consumption. Methods We used individual-participant data (n = 46,514) from four prospective cohort studies from Finland, France and the UK. Participants responded to a survey on alcohol use at two time points 4–6 years apart, and were linked to records of sickness absence for an ~6-year follow-up after the latter survey. Abstainers were those reporting no alcohol use in either survey. At-risk drinkers at T1 were labelled as 'former', at-risk drinkers at T2 as 'current' and at-risk drinkers at both times as 'consistent' at-risk drinkers. The reference group was low-risk drinkers at both times. Study-specific analyses were stratified by sex and socioeconomic status (SES) and the estimates were pooled using meta-analysis. Results Among men (n = 17,285), abstainers (6%), former (5%), current (5%) and consistent (7%) at-risk drinkers had an increased risk of sickness absence compared with consistent low-risk drinkers (77%). Among women (n = 29,229), only abstainers (12%) had a higher risk of sickness absence compared to consistent low-risk drinkers (74%). After adjustment for lifestyle and health, abstaining from alcohol was associated with sickness absence among people with intermediate and high SES, but not among people with low SES. Conclusions The U-shaped alcohol use—sickness absence association is more consistent in men than women. Abstinence is a risk factor for sickness absence among people with higher rather than lower SES. Healthy worker effect and health selection may partly explain the observed differences. Short summary In a pooled analysis from four cohort studies from three European countries, we demonstrated a U-shaped association between alcohol use and sickness absence, particularly among men. The mechanisms by which work environment might influence cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk are still a matter of debate. In particular, the involvement of the main behavioral and clinical risk factors and their relationships with working conditions are not always clear, despite an abundant body of literature. Most studies have investigated the impact of a limited number of characteristics of the work environment on the occurrence of 1 or a few risk factors. In contrast, in this study we used a global approach in which 30 objective and subjective indicators of working conditions were tested as predictors of 9 modifiable CVD risk factors in a well-characterized cohort of 20,625 middle-aged French workers who were followed from the 1990s until they retired or until December 31, 2013. The incidence of 3 CVD risk factors (obesity, sleep complaints, and depression) was predicted by a large number of indicators of working conditions in both age- and sex-adjusted and multivariate-adjusted Cox regression models, whatever the significance threshold retained. These results suggest the existence of close relationships between a poor work environment and a higher risk of developing obesity, sleep complaints, or depression. These risk factors may contribute to increased CVD risk not only when workers are exposed to poor working conditions but also after retirement, as predictors of the appearance of other risk factors. Background: The association of psychological variables with cardiovascular health might depend on socioeconomic status. We examined the moderating effect of occupational grade on the association between depression and incident cardiac events among middle-aged workers from the GAZEL cohort.Methods and Results: A total of 10 541 participants (7855 men, mean age: 47.8±3.5 years) free of cardiovascular diseases completed the Center of Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale in 1993. Age, sex, and occupational grade (low, medium, and high) were obtained from company records. Classical cardiovascular risk factors were self-reported. All participants were followed-up for medically certified cardiac events from January 1994 to December 2014. Associations between baseline variables and incident cardiac events were estimated with hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals computed in Cox regressions. After a median follow-up of 21 years, 592 (5.6%) participants had a cardiac event. There was a significant interaction between depression and occupational grade in both age- and sex-adjusted (P=0.008) and multiadjusted (P=0.009) models. This interaction was mainly explained by an association between depression and incident cardiac events that prevailed among participants of low occupational grade (3.71 versus 1.96 events per 1000 person-years among those depressed versus nondepressed, multiadjusted hazard ratios [95% confidence intervals], 1.99 [1.12-3.48]).Conclusions: From a research perspective, these results may account for previous conflicting results and constitute an impetus for reanalyzing previous data sets, taking into account the moderating role of socioeconomic status. Background: Active life engagement is important for successful aging of societies and individuals. We tested predictors of engagement in French adults aged 60–74 (the GAZEL cohort). Methods: Participants (n = 10,764) reported the previous day’s activities in a time-use survey. We modeled concurrent social, demographic, and health predictors of participation incidence and intensity in paid work, volunteering, caregiving, community involvement, and informal social interaction. Results: Men were more active in volunteering/community activities and women in caregiving and informal social interaction. Participation varied inversely with socioeconomic status (SES). Paid work participation declined linearly with age and health status, but this relationship did not hold for other activities. Conclusions: Men and those of higher SES were more likely to participate in certain activities than were women and those of low lifetime SES, potentially limiting the latter groups’ future health and well-being benefits from such activities. Objectives: The assessment of sensory difficulties is sometimes included in the screening of frailty in ageing population. This study aimed to compare the prevalence of frailty and associated risk of adverse outcomes depending on whether sensory difficulties participated in the definition of frailty. Design: Prospective cohort study-GAZEL cohort. Setting: France. Participants: The 13,128 subjects who completed a questionnaire in 2012. Measurements: According to the Strawbridge questionnaire, subjects were considered frail if they reported difficulties in two domains or more among physical, nutritive, cognitive and sensory domains. The risk of adverse health outcomes was assessed by using logistic regression models (hospitalisations, onset of difficulty in performing movements of everyday life) and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models (mortality). Results: Mean age was 66.8 +/− 3.4 years and 73.8% were males. The prevalence of frailty varied from 4.4 to 14.2% depending on whether the sensory domain was excluded or included. During follow-up, 182 deaths (1.4%), 479 hospitalisations (3.6%) and 703 cases of new disability (8.0%) were observed. Both definitions of frailty predicted the onset of difficulties to perform everyday movements, with 2 to 3-fold increase in the risk. The inclusion of the sensory domain in the definition made frailty predictive of hospitalisations (Odds Ratio 1.31 [1.01-1.70]) but the association with mortality was only observed when sensory difficulties were ignored (Hazard Ratio 2.28 [1.32-3.92]). Conclusion: The inclusion of a sensory domain into a frailty screening instrument has a major impact in terms of prevalence and modifies the risk profile associated with frailty. In order to develop the use of frailty screening instruments in clinical practice, further researches will need to carefully evaluate the impact on risk prediction of the different domains involved. Background The role of socioeconomic status in work disability among employees with diabetes is not well known. We examined the association between socioeconomic status and work disability among employees with and without diabetes taking into account comorbid conditions. Methods We used individual participant data from three occupational cohorts from Finland, France and the UK (employees with diabetes, n=2170, age-matched and sex-matched controls without diabetes, n=4340). In all cohorts, survey data were linked with register data and the employees were followed up on average for 4.4 years. Socioeconomic status was based on occupational titles. Work disability (sickness absence and disability pension) was indexed as the numbers of disability days and episodes. The study-specific estimates were pooled using meta-analysis and effect modifications were studied with meta-regression. Results The average numbers of disability days and episodes per year were 1.5-3.5 times higher for persons with diabetes compared to those without. Among persons with diabetes, the risk of work disability was almost four times higher in the lowest compared to the highest occupational position (relative index of inequality (RII) for days 3.82; 95% CI 2.77 to 5.56; RII for episodes 3.80; 95% CI 3.13 to 4.61). This association was consistent in both sexes and regardless of comorbid conditions. In relative terms, the association of socioeconomic status and work disability was similar among those free of diabetes. BACKGROUND: Pesticides have been associated with Parkinson's disease (PD), but there are few data on important exposure characteristics such as dose--effect relations. It is unknown whether associations depend on clinical PD subtypes. OBJECTIVES: We examined quantitative aspects of occupational pesticide exposure associated with PD and investigated whether associations were similar across PD subtypes. METHODS: AS part of a French population-based case--control study including men enrolled in the health insurance plan for farmers and agricultural workers, cases with clinically confirmed PD were identified through antiparkinsonian drug claims. Two controls were matched to each case. Using a comprehensive occupational questionnaire, we computed indicators for different dimensions of exposure (duration, cumulative exposure, intensity). We used conditional logistic regression to compute odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) among exposed male farmers (133 cases, 298 controls). We examined the relation between pesticides and PD subtypes (tremor dominant/non-tremor dominant) using polytomous logistic regression. RESULTS: There appeared to be a stronger association with intensity than duration of pesticide exposure based on separate models, as well as a synergistic interaction between duration and intensity (p-interaction = 0.04). High-intensity exposure to insecticides was positively associated with PD among those with low-intensity exposure to fungicides and vice versa, suggesting independent effects. Pesticide exposure in farms that specialized in vineyards was associated with PD (OR = 2.56; 95% CI: 1.31, 4.98). The association with intensity of pesticide use was stronger, although not significantly (p-heterogeneity = 0.60), for tremor-dominant (p-trend < 0.01) than for non-tremor--dominant PD (p-trend = 0.24). CONCLUSIONS: This study helps to better characterize different aspects of pesticide exposure associated with PD, and shows a significant association of pesticides with tremor-dominant PD in men, the most typical PD presentation. Objectives: Previous projections of mortality from mesothelioma among French men have used the age-generation method, based on the Poisson regression model. In this study an alternative method to model mortality from mesothelioma was used to predict its future trend: this method was based on the risk function that links this mortality to past exposure to asbestos, combined with population exposure data.Method: Data on past French asbestos imports were used to model the overall past exposure to asbestos in men and assess two extreme scenarios (optimistic and pessimistic) for its future trends. The number of male deaths occurring between the ages of 50 and 79, from 1997-2050, was then calculated with the risk function for mesothelioma.Results: The results showed that mortality from mesothelioma among French men aged 50-79 will continue to increase, reaching a peak averaging between 1140 (optimistic scenario) and 1300 deaths (pessimistic scenario) annually around the years 2030 and 2040, respectively. No preventive measures applied now will affect this trend before then. These results are similar to those of two other predictions of mortality from mesothelioma among French men: a peak around 2030 of 800-1600 deaths annually among men aged 25-89 years, and a peak around 2020 of 1550 deaths annually among men aged 40-84.Conclusions: Our results indicate that between 1997 and 2050, the most optimistic and pessimistic trends of future exposure will lead to the deaths from mesothelioma of between 44 480 and 57 020 men, with a corresponding loss of from 877 200 to 1 171 500 person-years of life. The aim of this study was to describe the change in vegetable consumption with ageing and the transition to retirement. Study subjects were the participants of the GAZEL prospective cohort (Gaz and Électricité de France) aged 40–49 years at inclusion in 1989 who retired between 1991 and 2008 (12 942 men and 2739 women). Four FFQ were completed from 1990 to 2009. We used multiple imputation by chained equations in order to avoid dropping incomplete cases. The OR for eating vegetables everyday was estimated as a function of ageing, retirement status and the place of lunch before retirement through generalised estimating equations. Analyses were stratified by sex, and models were adjusted for confounders, including current spousal status. In 1990, 17·7 % of men and 31 % of women reported eating vegetables daily. The odds of consuming vegetables everyday increased with ageing for both men and women. The usual place of lunch was home for less than half the sample before retirement and for almost every respondent after retirement. For those who changed their place of lunch, the association between being retired and the odds of eating vegetables daily was positive and significant. We found that, in this cohort, vegetable consumption increased with ageing. Retirement had an indirect effect on vegetable consumption mediated by changes in the place of lunch. Background: Changes in life events may play a contributing role in changes in smoking behaviors. The objective was to examine the impact of stressful life events (SLEs) on smoking among French adults. Methods: We examined smoking prevalence in 20 625 employees of the French GAZEL cohort for up to 5 years before and after a SLE during three time periods (years −1 vs. −5; years +1 vs. −1; years +5 vs. +1). Repeated measures analysis of time series data indexed to events were used, employing generalized estimating equations. Results: For women, comparing 1 year after vs. 1 year before SLEs, decreased odds of smoking were found for employment promotion (OR: 0.80; 95% CI = 0.67-0.95), marriage (OR: 0.57; 95% CI = 0.48-0.68) and divorce (OR: 0.78; 95% CI = 0.68-0.90). Comparing 5 years after to 1 year after SLEs, women had decreased odds of smoking for important purchase (OR: 0.87; 95% CI = 0.79-0.96), children leaving home (OR: 0.83; 95% CI = 0.74-0.93), retirement (OR: 0.73; 95% CI = 0.64-0.83) and death of loved one (OR: 0.86; 95% CI = 0.79-0.93). For men, decreased odds of smoking were observed in all three time periods for all SLEs except when comparing 1 year before to 5 years before marriage (OR: 1.66; 95% CI = 1.09-2.52) and divorce (OR: 1.49; 95% CI = 1.25-1.77). Objectives: The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of chronic and other knee pain (KP) in relation to occupational and personal risk factors among workers representative of a general working population. Methods: Of 3710 workers in a French region included in a surveillance network for musculoskeletal disorders (2002-2005), 2332 completed a follow-up questionnaire in 2007-2009 (Cosali cohort). The questionnaires included questions on musculoskeletal symptoms, and personal and occupational exposure. Incident cases of KP in 2007-2009 (i.e. with KP at follow-up but not at baseline) were dichotomized into chronic KP (>30 days in the previous year) and other KP. Associations between incident KP and personal and occupational factors at baseline were studied separately according to sex using multinomial logistic regression. Results: Of the 1616 respondents without KP at baseline, 122 (7.5%) reported chronic KP and 243 (15.0%) reported other KP. The incidence rate of chronic KP was estimated at 19.6 per 1000 worker-years (95% CI: 16.3-23.5). After adjustment for age and body mass index, significant associations were found between incident chronic KP and handling loads >4 kg [odds ratio (OR) 2.1 (1.2-3.6) for men, OR 2.3 (1.1-5.0) for women] and kneeling >2 h a day for men [OR 1.8 (1.0-3.0)]. Conclusions: This study highlights the high frequency of chronic KP in the working population and the role of occupational factors in its incidence, in particular those kneeling and handling loads. Objectives:This article aims to contribute to the literature on life course influences upon quality of life by examining pathways linking social position in middle age to quality of life following retirement in French men and women. Method:Data are from the GAZEL cohort study of employees at the French national gas and electricity company. A finely grained measure of occupational grade in 1989 was obtained from company records. Annual self-completion questionnaires provided information on quality of life in 2005, measured with the CASP-19 scale, and on participants’ recent circumstances 2002–2005: mental health, physical functioning, wealth, social status, neighbourhood characteristics, social support and social participation. Path analysis using full information maximum likelihood estimation was performed on 11,293 retired participants. Results:Higher occupational grade in 1989 was associated, in a graded relationship, with better quality of life 16 years later. This association was accounted for by individuals’ more recent circumstances, particularly their social status, mental health, physical functioning and wealth. Conclusion:The graded relationship between occupational grade in mid-life and quality of life after labour market exit was largely accounted for by more recent socio-economic circumstances and state of health. The results support a pathway model for the development of social disparities in quality of life, in which earlier social position shapes individual circumstances in later life. Objectives: To estimate the proportion of pleural mesothelioma cases that can be attributed to asbestos exposure in France including non-occupational exposure. Methods: A population-based case-control study including 437 incident cases and 874 controls was conducted from 1998 to 2002. Occupational and nonoccupational asbestos exposure was assessed retrospectively by two expert hygienists. ORs of pleural mesothelioma for asbestos-exposed subjects compared to non-exposed subjects, and population-attributable risk (ARp) of asbestos exposure were estimated using a conditional logistic regression. Results: A clear dose-response relationship was observed between occupational asbestos exposure and pleural mesothelioma (OR=4.0 (99% CI 1.9 to 8.3) for men exposed at less than 0.1 f/mL-year vs 67.0 (99% CI 25.6 to 175.1) for men exposed at more than 10 f/mL-year). The occupational asbestos ARp was 83.1% (99% CI 74.5% to 91.7%) for men and 41.7% (99% CI 25.3% to 58.0%) for women. A higher risk of pleural mesothelioma was observed in subjects nonoccupationally exposed to asbestos compared to those never exposed. The non-occupational asbestos ARp for these subjects was 20.0% (99% CI -33.5% to 73.5%) in men and 38.7% (99% CI 8.4% to 69.0%) in women. When considering all kinds of asbestos exposure, ARp was 87.3% (99% CI 78.9% to 95.7%) for men and 64.8% (99% CI 45.4% to 84.3%) for women. Conclusions: Our study suggests that the overall ARp in women is largely driven by non-occupational asbestos exposure arguing for the strong impact of such exposure in pleural mesothelioma occurrence. ABSTRACT Background The aim was to assess the persistence of rotator cuff syndrome (RCS) in workers and to study associations with personal and work-related factors, job change, exposure change and treatment. Methods At baseline, 274 workers suffered from RCS, of whom 150 were followed up. Three groups were constituted: (1) a RCS recovery group, (2) a shoulder pain without RCS group, and (3) a RCS without recovery group. We studied the differences between groups (1) and (3) because of the low number of workers in group (2). Results Recovery occurred in 61.5% of men and 51.4% of women. Factors related to work were associated with persistence of RCS in men whereas upper limb pain and absence of job rotation were associated with persistence of RCS in women. Conclusion This descriptive study showed that a high percentage of workers recovered and several personal and work-related factors were associated with persistent RCS. This article explores the reception of Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi in France in light of the many and diverse reactions his books and lectures engendered at major conferences and meetings. It describes how the American scholar became one of the leading figures among French intellectuals after the first translation of his book Zakhor in 1984 and his first lecture at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in 1987, which resulted in a series of annual lectures over the next ten years. Following the readings of Jacques Derrida, Paul Ricœur, Pierre Vidal-Naquet, and François Furet, among other intellectuals, the eminent standing achieved by Yerushalmi coincided with a special 'moment.' At a time when doubt was cast on the testimonies of living witnesses and when the words of Holocaust deniers and of members of the French Resistance were treated on equal terms, the politics of memory challenged the status of history and historians. This paper aims to recover the atmosphere of these past decades and to elucidate how Yerushalmi's name has become inseparable from the issues linked with the debates about history and memory. Background: Major life changes may play a causative role in health through lifestyle factors, such as alcohol. The objective was to examine the impact of stressful life events on heavy alcohol consumption among French adults. Methods: Trajectories of excessive alcohol consumption in 20,625 employees of the French national gas and electricity company for up to 5 years before and 5 years after an event, with annual measurements from 1992. We used repeated measures analysis of time series data indexed to events, employing generalized estimating equations. Results: For women, excessive alcohol use increased before important purchase (p = 0.021), children leaving home (p<0.001), and death of loved ones (p = 0.03), and decreased before widowhood (p = 0.015); in the year straddling the event, increased consumption was observed for important purchase (p = 0.018) and retirement (p = 0.002); at the time of the event, consumption decreased for marriage (p = 0.002), divorce, widowhood, and death of loved one (all p<0.001), and increased for retirement (p = 0.035). For men, heavy alcohol consumption increased in the years up to and surrounding the death of loved ones, retirement, and important purchase (all p<0.001), and decreased after (all p<0.001, except death of loved one: p = 0.006); at the time of the event, consumption decreased for all events except for children leaving home and retirement, where we observed an increase (all p<0.001). For women and men, heavy alcohol consumption decreased prior to marriage and divorce and increased after (all p<0.001, except for women and marriage: p = 0.01). Conclusion: Stressful life events promote healthy and unhealthy alcohol consumption. Certain events impact alcohol intake temporarily while others have longer-term implications. Depression has long been hypothesized to be associated with cancer incidence. However, there is evidence for a positive publication bias in this field. In the present study, we examined the association between various measures of depression and cancer incidence at several sites. A total of 14,203 members of the French GAZEL (Gaz et Electricité) cohort (10,506 men, 3,697 women) were followed up for diagnoses of primary cancers from January 1, 1994, to December 31, 2009. All medically certified sickness absences for depression recorded between January 1, 1990, and December 31, 1993, were compiled. Depressive symptoms were self-reported in 1993, 1996, and 1999 with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. During a mean follow-up period of 15.2 years, 1,119 participants received a cancer diagnosis, excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer and in situ neoplasms. Considering 6 cancer sites (prostate, breast, colorectal, smoking-related, lymphoid and hematopoietic tissues, other sites) and 4 measures of depression, we found 1 positive association and 1 negative association. Overall, there was no compelling evidence for an association between depression and cancer incidence. Such null results should be considered when addressing concerns of cancer patients and their relatives about the role of depression in cancer onset. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Objectives This study aims to estimate the association between repeated measures of occupational risk factors and the incidence of lateral epicondylitis in a large working population. Methods A total of 3710 workers in a French region were included in 2002-2005, and among them 1046 had a complete follow-up in 2007-2010. At both stages, occupational health physicians assessed the presence of lateral epicondylitis and workers self-reported their occupational exposures. Poisson models were performed to assess the incidence rate ratios (IRR) separately by sex using multiple imputed data. Results The annual incidence rate of lateral epicondylitis was estimated as 1.0 [95% confidence interval (95% CI) 0.7-1.3] per 100 workers among men and 0.9 (95% CI 0.6-1.3) among women. Workers aged >45 years had higher incidence than those aged <30 years (significant at 10%). Among men, high physical exertion combined with elbow flexion/extension or extreme wrist bending (>2 hours/day) was a risk factor, with an age-adjusted IRR of 3.2 (95% CI 1.5-6.4) for workers exposed at both questionnaires [3.3 (95% CI 1.4-7.6) among women]. Conclusions This study highlights the importance of temporal dimensions for occupational risk factors on the incidence of lateral epicondylitis. Background This study was designed to assess the relationship between work-related combined physical and psychosocial factors and elbow disorders (lateral epicondylitis and non-specific disorders without lateral epicondylitis) in the working population. Methods A total of 3,710 workers (58% men) in a French region in 2002-2005 participated in physical examinations by occupational health physicians and assessed their personal factors and work exposure by self-administered questionnaire. Statistical associations between elbow disorders and risks factors were analyzed using multinomial logistic regression. Results A total of 389 (10.5%) workers had elbow pain without lateral epicondylitis and 90 (2.4%) workers had lateral epicondylitis. Age, body mass index (>25), and low social support (only for men) were significant risks factors. Hard perceived physical exertion combined with elbow flexion/extension (>2 hr/day) and wrist bending (>2 hr/day) was a strong significant risk factor for elbow pain and epicondylitis: among men, adjusted Odds Ratio (ORa) = 2.6 (1.9-3.7) and ORa = 5.6 (2.8-11.3), respectively; among women, ORa = 1.4 (0.9-2.2) and ORa = 2.9 (1.3-6.5). Conclusions This study emphasizes the strength of the associations between combined physical exertion and elbow movements and lateral epicondylitis. Certain observed differences in associations with lateral epicondylitis and elbow pain only indicate the need for additional longitudinal studies on different stages of elbow disorders and known risk factors. Background The aim of this study was to determine the rates of compensation awarded to patients presenting with pleural mesothelioma and factors linked to such compensation in France. Methods The study population consisted of 2,407 patients presenting with pleural mesothelioma, recorded by the National Mesothelioma Surveillance Programme between January 1, 1999 and December 31, 2009. Analysis of claims for recognition as 'occupational disease' (OD) and claims for compensation by the Compensation Fund for Asbestos Victims (FIVA) were analyzed. Results Approximately 30% of subjects presenting with pleural mesothelioma, affiliated to the General National Health Insurance fund, neither sought recognition as an OD nor claimed for FIVA compensation. Gender, age at diagnosis, type of health insurance, and socio-professional category influence the likelihood of patients presenting with mesothelioma seeking compensation for this disease. Abstract: Precision data from cosmology (probing the CMB decoupling epoch) and light-element abundances (probing the BBN epoch) have hinted at the presence of extra relativistic degrees of freedom, the so-called “dark radiation.” We present a model independent study to account for the dark radiation by means of the right-handed partners of the three, left-handed, standard model neutrinos. We show that milli-weak interactions of these Dirac states (through their coupling to a TeV-scale gauge boson) may allow the ʼs to decouple much earlier, at a higher temperature, than their left-handed counterparts. If the ʼs decouple during the quark–hadron crossover transition, they are considerably cooler than the ʼs and contribute less than 3 extra “equivalent neutrinos” to the early Universe energy density. For decoupling in this transition region, the generate , extra relativistic degrees of freedom at BBN and at the CMB epochs. Consistency with present constraints on dark radiation permits us to identify the allowed region in the parameter space of masses and couplings. Background: It remains unknown whether short measures of depression perform as well as long measures in predicting adverse outcomes such as mortality. The present study aims to examine the predictive value of a single-item measure of depression for mortality. Methods: A total of 14 185 participants of the GAZEL cohort completed the 20-item Center-for-Epidemiologic-Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale in 1996. One of these items (I felt depressed) was used as a single-item measure of depression. All-cause mortality data were available until 30 September 2009, a mean follow-up period of 12.7 years with a total of 650 deaths. Results: In Cox regression model adjusted for baseline socio-demographic characteristics, a one-unit increase in the single-item score (range 0–3) was associated with a 25% higher risk of all-cause mortality (95% CI: 13–37%, P < 0.001). Further adjustment for health-related behaviours and physical chronic diseases reduced this risk by 36% and 8%, respectively. After adjustment for all these variables, every one-unit increase in the single-item score predicted a 15% increased risk of death (95% CI: 5–27%, P < 0.01). There is also an evidence of a dose–reponse relationship between reponse scores on the single-item measure of depression and mortality. Conclusion: This study shows that a single-item measure of depression is associated with an increased risk of death. Given its simplicity and ease of administration, a very simple single-item measure of depression might be useful for identifying middle-aged adults at risk for elevated depressive symptoms in large epidemiological studies and clinical settings. Abstract: The association of Neandertal occupations with fire has been reported for several European late Middle Paleolithic sites. Renewed excavations at the French site of Roc de Marsal (Dordogne) have exposed a series of well-preserved fire features associated with artifact-rich Neandertal occupations. This paper provides detailed descriptions of the combustion sediments and associated archaeological assemblages, using field observations and laboratory methods, including soil micromorphology, FTIR, and GIS techniques. From an integrity point of view, the available data demonstrate the excellent preservation of the hearths at Roc de Marsal, which display minimal or no post-depositional movement. However, our results suggest that it is often impossible to access the level of contemporaneity between different combustion events, the absence of association between burned objects and the hearths, and that it is often very difficult to distinguish distinct fire events based solely on macroscopic observations. These problems have significant implications for how such features are excavated and analyzed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
