The COVID-19 pandemic has led people to experience significant personal and professional challenges. Although many studies were carried out during the pandemic and in the short term, few of them have focused on medium-term impacts. This article raises awareness on the situation of vulnerable young people and discusses the role of contexts and psychological resources in mitigating the detrimental effects of this pandemic. Twenty-three young people aged 18 to 25 registered at a career center in France took part in a semistructured interview. Thematic content analysis reveals an impact on some psychological processes, leading to four types of coping strategies. It shows that biographical disruptions occur in three successive stages. The discussion refers to a career counseling intervention program with a focus on sustainability.

The cognate advantage in bilingual children varies in strength across groups and individuals, in particular on receptive measures (e.g. picture-identification). This variation may be due to children's developing ability to benefit from cognates in such tasks, yet longitudinal studies of this phenomenon, especially with older children, are rare. Using longitudinal and cross-sectional analyses of picture-identification performance in French and English from 37 bilingual children attending a dual language program in France, this study investigates the cognate advantage across a wide range of ages (6-13 years old). The influence of children's relative exposure on the cognate advantage is also investigated. We find that significant differences in cognate versus non-cognate performance emerge only after the first years of elementary school. Children show marked growth in late elementary and middle school years, but only on the English task. The strength of the cognate advantage in picture-ID is inversely related to exposure to that language. These findings are discussed in relation to the nature of these children's exposure and properties of cognates in the two languages. Implications for dual language pedagogy are also discussed.

Civic leaders who are highly and effectively engaged often have strong relationships with key stakeholders across institutions and communities. The prevalence and nature of these relationships is not known among those with more typical levels of civic engagement. We were interested in the perceptions of likelihood of individual versus community action on particular topics. We surveyed a random sample of residents of two neighboring French towns and found that people perceive their neighbors to be, on average, more engaged than they perceive themselves to be, and that few individuals can provide specific action steps for how they would tackle social issues in their community. These results suggest that teaching civic action skills, including how to identify key decision makers as possible allies, is important for civic educators.

Children and adolescents with ASD are increasingly included in regular school settings, however little is known about how placement decisions are made. In the present study, we examined the types and duration of school attendance among children and adolescents in the ELENA Cohort, a multi-center study of children and adolescents with ASD, ages 2-16 years, in France. Results showed that 88% of subjects were attending school and that children and adolescents with more severe adaptive and cognitive deficits were less likely to attend school. The results provide a topography on school inclusion and ASD in France. Challenging behaviors and sensory processing difficulties were associated with partial-inclusion; and co-occurring anxiety symptoms were associated with inclusion on a full-time basis.

This study on online L2 interactions compares lexical word search between an audioconferencing and a videoconferencing condition. Nine upper-intermediate learners of English describe a previously unseen photograph in either the videoconferencing or the audioconferencing condition. A semantic feature analysis is adopted to compare their interactions. To evaluate the contribution of visual and verbal modes, a quantitative analysis examines the distribution of the referential properties of one target lexical item: "tunnel earring." It suggests that pushed output produced in the videoconferencing condition is lexically richer. Then, in view of these results, focusing on two learners, one from the audioconferencing condition and one from the videoconferencing condition, a fine-grained multimodal analysis of the qualitative features of gestures and speech complements the quantitative results. It demonstrates how the videoconferencing condition allows the learner to embody salient physical referential properties of the lexical item, before transferring the referential information to the verbal mode, to produce a semantically rich description. The study will interest researchers working on multimodality and L2 teachers deciding between videoconferencing and audioconferencing as pedagogical options.

While international demand for sales positions is growing, negative sales stereotypes, partially fueled by ethical abuses in the sales arena, are prevalent and may dissuade students from pursuing sales careers. To help combat the situation globally, educators must develop and utilize effective sales ethics pedagogies. The first step involves understanding cross-cultural sales ethics perspectives. A convenience sample is drawn from five countries (United States, France, Germany, Indonesia, and New Zealand), and the Personal Selling Ethics Scale (PSE-2) is successfully used to examine culturally specific and gender-based evaluation differences. Gender-based ethical perspectives are of particular interest due to the growing gender diversity within sales professions. The study finds that cultural traditionalism/secularism and individualism/collectivism affect sales ethics evaluations. Likewise, gender and moral ideology affect evaluations. Women are more sensitive to ethical misconduct than men, and absolutist are more sensitive than exceptionists, situationists, and subjectivists. Specific pedagogical recommendations are provided.

In France, trade union officers are former shop stewards who have chosen to work full-time for the union for several years. This research investigates the career transitions of former union officers who have returned to the labour market following extended experience with high-level responsibilities in the union. Semi-directed interviews were conducted with 23 subjects and were analysed using thematic content analyses. The results indicate the existence of different perceptions of the career change and four types of transitions that are dependent on the level of support provided by the union and individual expectations regarding new jobs.

The input factors that may cause variation in bilingual proficiency were investigated in 38 French-English bilinguals aged six to eight, of middle-to-high socio-economic status, attending an international state school in France. Data on children's current and cumulative language exposure and family background were collected through questionnaires given to parents and children. Language proficiency was measured using the standardised French and English versions of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the Student Oral Language Observation Matrix, a rating scale of oral competence, completed by children's French and English teachers. The results indicated significant correlations between the language proficiency measures and current amount of overall exposure to each language, as well as current input and output quantity. Cumulative length of exposure was also a significant predictor for all the language proficiency measures. Furthermore, the child's dominant language was a reliable indicator of variables related to language use, including the child's preferred language for speaking and reading and the language used with peers in the school playground. The implications of these findings are discussed, highlighting particularly the need to find ways of promoting the child's weaker language.

It is intuitively felt that visual cues should enhance online communication, and this experimental study aims to test this prediction by exploring the value provided by a webcam in an online L2 pedagogical teacher-to-learner interaction. A total of 40 French undergraduate students with a B2 level in English were asked to describe in English four previously unseen photographs to a native English-speaking teacher of EFL via Skype, a free web-based videoconferencing tool, during a 10-minute interaction. Twenty students were assigned to the videoconferencing condition and 20 to the audioconferencing condition. All 40 interactions were recorded using dynamic screen capture software and were analyzed with ELAN, a multimodal data annotation tool. Participants' perceptions of the online interaction are first compared with regard to the issues of social presence and their understanding and appreciation of the online interaction, using data gathered from a post-task questionnaire. The study then explores whether seeing the interlocutor's image impacts on the patterns of these synchronous exchanges and on the word search episodes. Results indicated that the impact of the webcam on the online pedagogical interaction was not as critical as had been predicted.

Aim: To investigate the psychiatric and cognitive phenotype in young individuals with the childhood form of myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1). Method: Twenty-eight individuals (15 females, 13 males) with childhood DM1 (mean age 17y, SD 4.6, range 7-24y) were assessed using standardized instruments and cognitive testing of general intelligence, visual attention, and visual-spatial construction abilities. Results: Nineteen patients had repeated a school grade. The mean (SD) Full-scale IQ was 73.6 (17.5) and mean Verbal IQ was significantly higher than the mean Performance IQ: 80.2 (19.22) versus 72.95 (15.58), p=0.01. Fifteen patients had one or more diagnoses on the DSM-IV axis 1, including internalizing disorders (phobia, n=7; mood disorder, n=6; other anxiety disorders, n=5) and attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder, inattentive subtype (n=8). Twelve out of 22 patients had alexithymia (inability to express feelings with words and to recognize and share emotional states). Cognitive testing found severe impairments in visual attention and visual-spatial construction abilities in four out of 18, and 14 out of 24 patients respectively. No diagnosis was correlated with the transmitting parent's sex or with cytosine-thymine-guanine (CTG) repeat numbers. Patients with severe visual-spatial construction disabilities had a significantly longer CTG expansion size than those with normal visual-spatial abilities (p=0.04). Interpretation: Children and adolescents with childhood DM1 have frequent diagnoses on DSM-IV axis 1, with internalizing disorders being the most common type of disorder. They also have borderline low intelligence and frequent impairments in attention and visual-spatial construction abilities. (Contains 3 tables and 1 figure.)

In this article, the author discusses her comparative study of the history of the welfare state in the United States, England, and France, she studies some of the usual features of the welfare state, which include important entitlement programs, such as social insurance, and protective labor legislation, but she also focuses on the development of mass schooling, which is important in a trans-Atlantic comparison. And although the United States had little tradition of state spending for social welfare, no other country outmatches it for public expenditures on education. Americans have never agreed that citizens have the right to jobs, to health care, or to homes. But even their courts have acted to enforce children?s right to schooling. She added, that despite the explosion of recent histories of the American welfare state--because it is seen as an alternative to traditional programs of entitlement--few have paid much attention to schooling. But the reconsideration of the American welfare state shows that the emphasis on schooling has not always been an alternative for other social welfare reforms, but that at important moments, efforts to expand schooling have stimulated the growth of the programs that they traditionally associate with the welfare state. The author also discusses the numerous studies of education and public policy which helps everyone understand the contradictory values that surround American education. (Contains 80 footnotes.)

This paper focuses on the predictive influence of phonological awareness, morphological/syntactic skill, and naming speed on spelling. The retrospective study correlated spelling performance in a group of 199 French-speaking children at the end of grade 2 with earlier capacities for phonemic manipulation, morphological/syntactic correction, and naming speed, assessed at the end of grade 1. The results are consistent with an integrative model that challenges the unitary phonological disorder hypothesis and confirmed that in French, as in other languages, naming speed is an independent predictor of reading performance.

The aim of this study is to understand the beliefs of first year undergraduates towards student identity and university experience. It is based on the theory of social representations and combines the methodologies of verbal and visual forms of representations to examine the beliefs of 104 students from Brazil and France. The results show conventional and subjective ideas about being a student, objectified in images and words. • This study simultaneously compared the efficacy and safety of LSG and LYRGB. LSG was found non-inferior to LRYGB with respect to weight loss and was associated with lower risk of major complications during a 3-year follow-up but GERD increased in LSG group and decreased in LRYGB group. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and laparoscopic Roux-en Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) are commonly performed, but few studies have shown superiority of one strategy over the other. Simultaneously compare LSG and LRYGB in terms of weight loss and morbimortality over a 36-month follow-up period. University hospital and bariatric surgery centers, France. Prospective, comparative study between LSG and RYGBP. The primary endpoint of this study was a joint hypothesis during the 36-month follow-up: the first primary outcome pertained to the frequency of patients with an excess weight loss (EWL) greater than 50% (% EWL > 50%) after LSG or RYGB; the second primary outcome was defined as a composite endpoint of at least one major complication. Secondary objectives were regression of comorbidities and improvement in quality of life. Two hundred and seventy-seven patients were included (91 RYGBP, 186 LSG). The mean age was 41.1 ± 11.1 years, and average preoperative body mass index of 45.3 ± 5.5 kg/m2. After 36 months, the %EWL > 50% was not inferior in the case of LSG (82.2%) relative to LRYGB (82.1%); while major complications rates were significantly higher in LRYGB (15.4%) vs. LSG (5.4%, P = 0.005). After 36 months, all secondary objectives were comparable between groups while only gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) increased in LSG group and decreased in LRYGB group. LSG was found non-inferior to LRYGB with respect to weight loss and was associated with lower risk of major complications during a 3-year follow-up. Background: Complications caused by skin lightening practices have not been systematically studied in Europe.Objective: Our aim was to assess the complications of skin lightening among people of African descent living in Paris.Methods: This was a descriptive study. All patients presenting with complications from skin lightening procedures underwent a complete clinical examination and were questioned about their practice.Results: Forty-six patients from various African countries (39 women, 7 men) presented with skin changes suggestive of side effects from skin lightening practices. The complications seemed mainly related to the use of clobetasol and hydroquinone.Limitations: The selection bias does not allow assessment of uncomplicated skin lightening.Conclusion: Complications arising from skin lightening practices represent a significant health problem for people of African descent living in Paris. Since the fifties, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) had been used in agriculture to protect vegetables. Two decades after their ban by the Stockholm convention in 2001, OCPs are still present in agricultural soils inducing vegetable contamination with concentrations above Maximum Residue Level (MRL). This is a major concern for a 5 km2 peri-urban vegetable growing valley located in the south west of France. In the present work, the sampling method was developed to clarify the spatial distribution of one OCP, Dieldrin, and its relationship with soil properties at the scale of study area. A total of 99 soil samples was collected for physicochemical analyses and Dieldrin concentrations. Results show Dieldrin concentrations in soils up to 204 μg kg−1. The horizontal distribution of this pesticide is heterogeneous at the study area scale but homogeneous in each reference plot studied. About 85% of the contamination was located in the top soil layers (0–40 cm depth), but Dieldrin may still be quantified at a depth of 80 cm. Among all soil physicochemical parameters analysed, SOM was the most significantly related (P < 10−4) with Dieldrin concentrations, once different grain size fractions were considered. Moreover, results indicate a 33 times higher Dieldrin concentration and/or extractability for coarse sand than for other grain size fractions. These results show that the developed sampling method is adapted for the study area scale as it helps understanding the factors influencing the spatial distribution of Dieldrin. Historical amendments are the predominant factor for the horizontal contamination and deep ploughing for the vertical contamination. Also, the variations of coarse sand repartition in soils prevents identification of relationships between SOM and Dieldrin contamination in bulk soil. Further investigation is required to explain these relationships but these results highlight why no clear relationship between OCPs and SOM was previously identified. Abstract: The CO2-Vadose project aims at: (i) understanding the behaviour of CO2 in the near surface carbonate environment during an induced CO2 leakage, (ii) assessing numerical simulations associated with CO2 release experiments, (iii) developing integrated field methodologies to detect and quantify a potential CO2 leakage. A gas mixture of CO2 with He and Kr was released in a cavity (9m3, 7m deep) located in an abandoned limestone quarry in France. Different gas measurement techniques were used to follow the plumes diffuse migrations in the carbonate vadose zone. A first gas release experiment with Ar and He was performed for checking and validating the experimental protocol. Then, the experimental CO2 and tracers induced leakage was performed to study the gas migration in the vadose zone. The numerical simulations done with COORES™ code, associated with the experiment to describe the plumes extensions, were in good agreement near the source. The results show that CO2 subsurface leakage can be anticipated thanks to inert gases used as tracers, like He and Kr. As part of a monitoring plan, the detection of noble gas increase could lead to the surveillance of the monitored area with accuracy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Using cross-national comparative analysis, this paper discusses the reasons why France has succeeded in partially privatizing its most recently constructed high speed line, while the U.S. has not reached this stage. The authors argue that France, with an interventionist government, diverged from the U.S. during the Great Depression by nationalizing its private railways and regulating competition with highway-based transport, thereby establishing favorable conditions for the future development of high speed trains. The U.S., because of its strong free market orientation, delayed nationalization until 1971, by which time passenger railways were severely weakened, so the U.S. lagged far behind France. After accruing a large public debt on its high speed rail program in the 1980s and 1990s, the French government recently took steps to privatize construction and operations on its Tours–Bordeaux line. Similarly, in the U.S., the State of California is trying to attract private participation on its planned high speed line between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Based on French high speed rail history, this paper argues that, to succeed, California must commit both a high level of public borrowing as well as public guarantees on private borrowing. Topics of discussion include the book "The Sacred Theory of the Earth," by Thomas Burnet, the recurring vision of Earth as a field of ruins during the 18th century, and the theory of catastrophism according to French naturalist and zoologist Georges Cuvier.

Abstract: The preservation of biodiversity, city-dwellers’ quality of life and equality are major issues in promoting sustainable cities. We chose to work at the built-up and much-valued heart of an agglomeration: Paris. We attempt to verify whether public semi-natural spaces with spontaneous vegetation and green frames provide ecosystem services to city-dwellers in an equitable way, and what is the role played by urban landscapes in this relation. Based upon existing datasets, a spatial and statistical analysis of relationships between public semi-natural spaces, urban landscapes and socioeconomic profiles of households was carried out. We compare their spatial patterns, which vary considerably. Mean income per vegetal and landscape cluster and correlations between income, ecological parameters and building density show complex and non-linear relationships. According to Multiple Correspondence Analysis, clusters of public semi-natural spaces, floristic richness and ecological diversity are associated with specific household socioeconomic profiles and landscape design. In the western built-up Haussmann districts inhabited by well-off households, public seminatural spaces provide low ecosystem services. Conversely, in the eastern and peripheral quarters where lower-income households live, public semi-natural spaces provide higher ecosystem services. It is not only well-off households which benefit from being close to urban parks and waterways. Blue and green frames cross districts inhabited by different household profiles. The implications of such results on inequalities between city-dwellers depends whether the presence of public semi-natural spaces actually improves their quality of life. An interview with French artist Daniel Buren is presented. He discusses his participation in the "Greater Paris" project. His main concern was how to keep the project from stalling. He talks about the different urban spaces that exist within Paris, keeping the tradition of the city's culture live, and being careful to not impose his personal aesthetic tastes on the city.

A criticism of the book "L'Avenir de Paris," by Albert Guérard is presented. It discusses the modern conception of the aesthetic of Paris, and what architects in Paris think the future of the city should be. It also explains some of the challenges the city presents to contemporary urban planners, who are often forced to work with antiquated designs and construction.

The topic examined in this article is not anti-semitism in itself, as illustrated by those who engage in it, but anti-semitism as brandished as a charge against real or alleged offenders. This approach is indispensable, the author argues, for a fuller understanding of how the notion of anti-semitism operates in political discourse and action. The author speaks in particular of the accusation of anti-semitism in cases where it can be shown that the behavior targeted is at least in part, and sometimes in great part, imaginary and constructed. The effectiveness of this ascribed anti-semitism depends on the capacity of those who construct it (precisely in order to denounce it) to make it appear plausible by connecting it, however indirectly, with tangible anti-semitic acts or declarations. The author explores a few cases from recent French experience in which the connection between what is denounced as anti-semitic discourse or activity and what has actually occurred is often tenuous, overblown, or, at the least, highly debatable. In such cases anti-semitism is constructed in an essentializing and a-historical manner, in such a way as to lump together disparate groups and individuals into a supposed current or milieu or nebula, portrayed in conspiratorial terms. The article focuses on the construction of political and administrative knowledge in France during the Constitutional Monarchy, which is from 1814-1848. It shows that based from the reports of the servants of the State, the formation of political and administrative knowledge derives from three sources, including the statistical tradition characterizing State since Middle Age, and the social surveys that was abundant at this time, specially with the publications of Villermé.

The article discusses the planned project to create a museum of immigration in France. This museum would focus on the collective memories of French people concerning the subject of immigration. The author describes these various collective memories and how, until the 1980s, French historical study into immigration was tied to notions of a République laïque (secular Republic). In this view, French society was seen as equal and made no distinctions based on ethnic origin or religion.

Introduction: Notre objectif était de rechercher si l’institution d’un traitement par pompe chez des patientes diabétiques de type 1 (DT1) au cours d’une grossesse n’entraînait pas plus de complications maternelles et/ou fœtales que chez les patientes déjà traitées par pompe depuis plusieurs mois. Patients et méthodes: Nous avons étudié 71 DT1 ayant mené une grossesse à terme sous pompe à insuline, suivis dans 6 centres initiateurs du Réseau Diabète-Provence entre 2008 et 2010. Avant la grossesse, 39 patientes étaient sous pompe à insuline (groupe pompe) et 32 sous multi-injections (groupe multi-injections). Les données ont été colligées à l’aide de la grille simplifiée du groupe Diabète et Grossesse de la SFD. Résultats: Les patientes du groupe pompe avaient des caractéristiques initiales comparables à celle sous injections (âge : 30,6+/-4,6 vs 28,5 +/-5,8 ; ancienneté diabète : 15+/-7,6 vs 12,7 +/-7,5 ; rétinopathie 13 % vs 7 % ; néphropathie 2 % vs 3 %). Dans le groupe pompe, le taux de programmation était de 77 %. Les HbA1c de début (7,2 % +/-1 vs 7,3 % +/-1,3) et fin de grossesse (6,6 % +/-0,7 vs 6,4 % +/-0,9) n’étaient pas significativement différentes entre les deux groupes. La fréquence des complications métaboliques aigues diffère dans les 2 groupes (NS) (3 hypoglycémies sévères dans le groupe pompe) ainsi que le taux d’aggravation des néphropathies (16 % d’aggravation vs 2 % dans le groupe pompe). Dans notre population totale, le taux de macrosomie était élevé (35 %), alors que les complications fœtales étaient peu fréquentes (prématurité 28 %, malformation congénitale 2,82 %, détresse respiratoire 7 %). Conclusion: Au sein du Réseau Diabète-Provence les patientes présentent un taux remarquablement bas de complications maternofoetales et il n’y a pas plus de risques à instituer un traitement par pompe après le début de la grossesse. Cependant, le taux de programmation reste insuffisant et malgré un bon équilibre glycémique, le taux de macrosomie est élevé. La poursuite du travail en Réseau pourra permettre d’améliorer ces résultats. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
