Europe is characterized by an uneven record of Middle Paleolithic occupations. Specifically, large parts of southeastern Europe display markedly lower site densities and less intensive evidence of human presence than is found elsewhere; this has often resulted in the exclusion of the Balkans from debates related to Pleistocene human adaptation. The discrepancy stems either from the lower population densities of southeastern Europe or an imbalance in research across Europe. Additionally, our understanding of Balkan Middle Paleolithic stone tool industries suffers from the use of Mousterian labels defined when Bordian typology was the chief method of lithic analysis. Industrial facies then defined and still in use include Balkan Charentian, Levallois Mousterian, Micromousterian, Denticulate Mousterian; their relation with the rest of the Eurasian record was and remains unclear. This paper sets aside the issue of scarcity of Pleistocene occupations and tries to address Neanderthal biogeography, and variations in Neanderthal technological behavior and subsistence, based on the available record. It reviews the current Middle Paleolithic record in the Balkans, presents the apparent temporal and spatial trends, and presents the provisional biogeography of hominins, including scenarios for the demise of Neanderthals at or soon after the arrival of modern humans in Europe. The paper ends with a discussion of perspectives for future research arising from this analysis of the available record and proposes some hypotheses regarding the role of the Balkans in the overall context of the occupational history of western Eurasia in the Middle/Late Pleistocene. The author analyzes the future of Eplerenone, an antihypertension drug, in Europe. Presently, the medical profession is looking forward to this new inhibitor of aldosterone receptor owing to its significantlyless adverse effects. Though, the drug is available in Europe, the cost factor of the drug and the lack of any proven efficacy in comparison to that of spironolactone will determine the future of the drug.

The Czech part of the Outer Western Carpathians (COWC) formed by flysch rocks is among the most landslide-prone areas in Europe. Recent LiDAR-based inventory mapping reveals that the area of the COWC encompasses more than 13,500 landslides, with some geological domains exhibiting > 20% of the surface area covered by landslides. Although mass movements represent crucial geomorphic agents in the COWC, their timing and especially lifespan remain elusive. In this study, we focused on rockslides affecting the flanks of the flysch anticline developed within Paleogene sandstones. The area ("Hradisko" ridge) is well known as the most extensive rock city in the COWC. Structural-geological investigation, kinematic analysis and the application of near-surface geophysics (ERT, GPR and seismic refraction) suggest that rockslides accompanied by toppling and lateral spreads are predisposed by the architecture of bedding planes, joints and inherited faults cross-cutting the anticlinal ridge. Based on 10Be exposure dating of five scarps and rockslide boulders (a total of 25 cosmogenic-dated samples), we were able to reconstruct the long-term history of rock slope failures. Although the obtained ages of headscarp exposures reveal consistent patterns suggesting major mass movement phases at ~ 18 ka and ~ 12 ka, the interpretation of boulder exposure ages is ambiguous. The study area has not been affected by catastrophic slope failure in historic times, but dendrogeomorphic analysis reveals surprisingly strong tree ring signals of mass movements within the last 150 years. These findings suggest that progressive failure is developing within some parts of the rockslide and/or slope portions above the major scarp. We conclude the following: (1) some rockslide spots within the COWC might express a very long history, encompassing the full Late Glacial–Holocene Period; (2) major mass movement activity in the study site temporally coincided with the major climatic changes; (3) rockslides with a very long history still represent potential hazards, although evidence of their active movement is not detected by standard geomorphic mapping techniques and (4) dating of the scarps should be preferred as even a higher number of boulders might be unreliable. Francesco Travagini, chemist, physician and naturalist, well known in Europe in his time, wrote the Physica Disquisitio after directly observing the effects of the 1667 Dubrovnik earthquake on the waters and buildings of Venice, distant by about 800 km. He posed the problem of the origin of the oscillatory motion of earthquakes, an aspect that had never been investigated before. Travagini reported his own observations, aware of being able to formulate only hypotheses, as he could not demonstrate, in a "mathematical and geometrical fashion", how the vertical motion, which was observed in the area of major effects, could be transformed into an oscillatory motion. He made the assumption that the oscillations derived from the daily motion of the Earth, and used an example similar to the one that had been proposed by Galileo to explain the tides, (although without quoting him). In this paper we clearly demonstrate that changes in oceanic nutrients are a first order factor in determining changes in the primary production of the northwest European continental shelf on time scales of 5-10 yr. We present a series of coupled hydrodynamic ecosystem modelling simulations, using the POLCOMS-ERSEM system. These are forced by both reanalysis data and a single example of a coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model (OAGCM) representative of possible conditions in 2080-2100 under an SRES A1B emissions scenario, along with the corresponding present day control. The OA-GCM forced simulations show a substantial reduction in surface nutrients in the open-ocean regions of the model domain, comparing future and present day time-slices. This arises from a large increase in oceanic stratification. Tracer transport experiments identify a substantial fraction of on-shelf water originates from the open-ocean region to the south of the domain, where this increase is largest, and indeed the on-shelf nutrient and primary production are reduced as this water is transported on-shelf. This relationship is confirmed quantitatively by comparing changes in winter nitrate with total annual nitrate uptake. The reduction in primary production by the reduced nutrient transport is mitigated by on-shelf processes relating to temperature, stratification (length of growing season) and recycling. Regions less exposed to ocean-shelf exchange in this model (Celtic Sea, Irish Sea, English Channel, and Southern North Sea) show a modest increase in primary production (of 5-10 %) compared with a decrease of 0-20% in the outer shelf, Central and Northern North Sea. During the last decades the acreage of winter oilseed rape has been increased considerably in Europe. Rapeseed can take up a large amount of nitrogen before winter (>100 kg N/ha) and thus prevent nitrate leaching and pollution. Winter wheat is often grown subsequently, using oilseed rape as a favorable preceding crop. However, under wheat large nitrogen losses via leaching are frequently observed in humid climates during winter, mainly due to high amounts of soil mineral N available in fall and the small N uptake in fall of wheat as a subsequent crop. The low N offtake by the seeds results in a lower N-use efficiency and increases the N surpluses (>90 kg N/ha) compared with winter wheat (c. 40 kg N/ha). In addition, a large soil N pool increases the risk of N2O emission, with its impact on climate change. In our review we discuss several options to increase nitrogen-use efficiency in oilseed rape-based cropping systems ranging from optimizing N fertilization practices to options arising from adopted tillage practices and crop rotation. N application in fall normally increases dry matter accumulation and N uptake before winter. However, because of its limited yield effects in most situations, fall N supply also boosts N surpluses. N fertilization in spring exceeding the need of the crop for optimal seed yield increases the risk of N leaching and decreases the farmer's net revenue. Considering the amount of N taken up by the canopy before the first spring application improves the determination of the optimal spring N supply. Measuring canopy N in fall gave the best results. At the cropping system level, time and intensity of soil tillage after the harvest of oilseed rape has concurrent goals of controlling volunteer rape, and achieving a successful establishment of the following crop, but avoiding an increased N mineralization. Changing the crop rotation by growing catch crops which prevent N from leaching is very effective in reducing N losses from the system by >40%. However, the economic losses from growing a usually less profitable spring crop probably limit the acceptance by farmers. Despite the problems addressed above, looking at the whole cropping system, oilseed rape is indispensable because of its beneficial effects on yield levels and nitrogen-use efficiency of following cereals, especially wheat, because alternative crops are often not realistic alternatives.
