2. The Brute-Hero: The 1950s and Echoes of the North.

Abstract

The interplay of the tropes of Yorkshire 'manliness' with the themes of the 1950s northern-realist and Angry Young Man fiction has not been discussed in detail. This essay suggests that older tropes of northernness are an integral part of the Angry Young Man works, all of which were set outside the metropolis. In particular, I discuss the ways in which the legacies of earlier conceptions of the north influence the creation of the brute-hero in the mid-twentieth century works. I compare the tropes and stereotypes present in Room at the Top and This Sporting Life with those present in the fiction of an earlier north; from works by Elizabeth Gaskell, the Brontës and Charles Dickens. Abstract

The article informs that libertine rakes in literature have achieved a culturally mythic outlaw status along with other Restoration and eighteenth-century types. Late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries witnessed the emerging dominance of a new code of civility which invalidated much of the conduct that previously had defined the prestigious male. This new code of civility revised the relationship between crime and masculinity in the history of violence in eighteenth-century England.

Abstract

The article presents the author's views on John Dryden's heroic play "Aureng-Zebe: A Tragedy," which has been published as a literary work. In the play, the protagonist enacts a code of masculinity that resolutely opposes traditionally warlike, antagonistic, aristocratic attitudes toward both familial and male homosocial relations. According to the author, Dryden's representation of the familial war symbolizes sociocultural conception of succession, inheritance, and competition in England.

The article examines softened masculinity and staging in the Jacobean play "The Lady's Tragedy," by Thomas Middleton. The author examines the play's major male characters, analyzes the early modern period's notions of maleness, and discusses the problems involved in producing Middleton in a Shakespeare-dominated theatrical paradigm.

Abstract

This paper reflects on the role of London as male Beloved in Whitney's 'Last Wyll and Testament'. Such a characterization of the city, the paper argues, has two consequences. First, it complicates and provides an important challenge to the ubiquitous personification of London as female in early modern England. Second, this dynamic between female speaker and male Beloved encourages a reconsideration of Whitney's agency in the poem - often celebrated as forceful - as more consciously ironic (although, ultimately, all the more compelling and effective because of it). The platitudes and pieties that accompany representations of the English working class was defamiliarized by Barker by decentering the ideology of the working-class hero. Her novels have achieved this by detailing the narratives of working-class women and by demonstrating that the vitality of individual communities does not rely on narrow versions of masculinity. Her trilogy displaces the scene of Englishness by exploring the process of memory itself rather than attacking what is remembered.
