Sargassum horneri (Turner) C. Agardh is a genus of brown algae and plays an important role in marine ecosystem. However, the inhabiting area of S. horneri has been decreasing sharply in China. To understand the photoacclimation and photoregulation strategies of S. horneri in responses to temperature and light, S. horneri was cultured under different temperatures [18°C (LT) and 26°C (HT)] and light intensities [60 µmol(photon) m-2 s-1 (LL) and 120 µmol(photon) m-2 s-1 (HL)] for 7 d, and then the chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters were measured. The results showed that the maximum electron transfer rate occurred at low temperature and high light (LT-HL) condition. The high temperature was the predominant factor for causing inhibition of PSII, lowering the effective quantum yield of PSII, and reducing the nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ). However, high light could improve the photoprotective ability via enhancing the NPQ. On the other hand, a strong linear relationship was observed between NPQ and the electron transport efficiency (a); the increase of NPQ could reduce the a value and avoid damage from high light stress to PSII. High‐speed railway (HSR) is becoming one of the most effective and important transportation modes. To ensure the safety of HSR, a stable communication system is necessary. The understanding of propagation characteristics of radio channel is important for HSR communication system design. In this paper, a wideband measurement in suburban HSR scenarios at 460 MHz is presented. Some typical channel parameters such as the large‐scale fading, Ricean K factor, power‐delay profile, and root‐mean‐square delay spread are extracted from the measurement data. The different distributions of small‐scale fading are also compared. The relationships between the channel parameters and the distance of transmitter (base station) and receiver are also explored. The results could provide a reference for the design and evaluation of HSR communication network, especially for the Long‐Term‐Evolution (LTE)‐railway system. Background Children who are neglected can experience serious and lifelong consequences. Earlier identification of children at risk for child neglect might reduce the individual, medical and societal costs. Methods A cross-sectional survey using multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling was conducted in Shaanxi and Chongqing from September 2012 to April 2013. The child neglect was measured by scale on child neglect in Rural China. The neglect rates between groups were compared with a chi-squared test. Factors possibly associated with neglect were analysed with binary logistic regression. All analyses were conducted in 2014. Results A total of 4131 eligible participants (2094 boys and 2037 girls) from 21 schools were recruited. The overall prevalence of child neglect was 55.50%. Significant differences were found between children of Han nationality (53.07%) and children of minorities (68.76%) (P<0.01); un-leftbehind children (49.10%) and left-behind children (61.65%) (P<0.01); first-born children (52.90%) and non-first-born children (59.04%) (P<0.01); and children from one-child families (47.87%) and children from multi-child families (58.20%) (P<0.01). Protective factors included one-child families, being a girl and having a father with higher education. However, factors such as being left behind; being from a minority, step family or one-parent family; or having a mother who rarely returns home placed children at increased risk of neglect. Conclusions The neglect rate of school-aged children in rural areas of western China is much higher than that in urban areas and eastern China. Children belonging to minorities, step families and multi-child families, whose mother seldom goes home, are at a higher risk of being neglected. Plant growth in semi-arid ecosystems is usually severely limited by soil nutrient availability. Alleviation of these resource stresses by fertiliser application and aboveground litter input may affect plant internal nutrient cycling in such regions. We conducted a 4-year field experiment to investigate the effects of nitrogen (N) addition (10 g N·m−2·year−1) and plant litter manipulation on nutrient resorption of Leymus chinensis, the dominant native grass in a semi-arid grassland in northern China. Although N addition had no clear effects on N and phosphorus (P) resorption efficiencies in leaves and culms, N fertilisation generally decreased leaf N resorption proficiency by 54%, culm N resorption proficiency by 65%. Moreover, N fertilisation increased leaf P resorption proficiency by 13%, culm P resorption proficiency by 20%. Under ambient or enriched N conditions, litter addition reduced N and P resorption proficiencies in both leaves and culms. The response of P resorption proficiency to litter manipulation was more sensitive than N resorption proficiency: P resorption proficiency in leaves and culms decreased strongly with increasing litter amount under both ambient and enriched N conditions. In contrast, N resorption proficiency was not significantly affected by litter addition, except for leaf N resorption proficiency under ambient N conditions. Furthermore, although litter addition caused a general decrease of leaf and culm nutrient resorption efficiencies under both ambient and enriched N conditions, litter addition effects on nutrient resorption efficiency were much weaker than the effects of litter addition on nutrient resorption proficiency. Taken together, our results show that leaf and non-leaf organs of L. chinensis respond consistently to altered soil N availability. Our study confirms the strong effects of N addition on plant nutrient resorption processes and the potential role of aboveground litter, the most important natural fertiliser in terrestrial ecosystems, in influencing plant internal nutrient cycling. Presented is the statistical analysis of radio wave propagation in a high-speed railway cutting scenario, derived from 930 MHz measurements taken along the 'Zhengzhou-Xi'an' high-speed railway of China. The crown width and bottom width of the cutting are well-covered by the proposed models. The Ricean distribution offers a good fit and the K-factor is found to be lognormal, with a mean value of 1.88 dB and standard deviation of 3.29 dB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Because extracts of kudzu have been used as a hangover remedy in China for many centuries, we tested the ability of NPI-031G (puerarin), an isoflavone isolated from kudzu, to counteract anxiogenic effects associated with withdrawal from chronic alcohol exposure. NPI-O31G (50 and 150 mg/kg ip) significantly increased the social interaction and locomotor activity reduced by withdrawal from 17 days of alcohol (7%) diet. The effects of NPI-031G resembled those of the benzodiazepine antagonist, flumazenil (5 mg/kg), and the 5-HT2C antagonist, SB 242084 (1 mg/kg). In a separate study, control rats were pretreated with NPI-031G (30 min) and then given the anxiogenic compounds DMCM, a benzodiazepine inverse agonist, or Ro 60 0175, a 5-HT2C agonist. NPI-031G significantly counteracted the reduction in social interaction induced by either compound. To identify a potential mechanism of action of NPI-031G, synaptoneurosomes were isolated from the cerebral cortex of untreated rats and chloride uptake assays were carried out. NPI-031G did not have any effect on the stimulation of chloride uptake by muscimol, a GABA(A) agonist. However, it reduced the potentiation of muscimol-stimulated chloride uptake by flunitrazepam, a benzodiazepine agonist, at a concentration of 100 μM. A reduction in [3H]flunitrazepam binding was also seen at this concentration. These findings are consistent with NPI-031G being a weak benzodiazepine site antagonist. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: China accounts for 24% of newly diagnosed cancer cases and 30% of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Comprehensive analyses of the economic burden on patients across different cancer treatment phases, based on empirical data, are lacking. This study aims to estimate the financial burden borne by patients and analyze the cost compositions of the leading cancers with the highest number of new cases in China., Methods: This cross-sectional cost-of-illness study analyzed patients diagnosed with lung, breast, colorectal, esophageal, liver, or gastric cancer, identified through electronic health records (EHRs) from 84 hospitals across 17 provinces in China. Patients completed any one of the initial treatment phase, follow-up phase, and relapse/metastasis phase were recruited by trained attending physicians through a stratified sampling procedure to ensure enough cases for each cancer progression stage and cancer treatment phase. Direct and indirect costs by treatment phase were collected from the EHRs and self-reported surveys. We estimated per case cost for each type of cancer, and employed subgroup analyses and multiple linear regression models to explore cost drivers., Results: We recruited a total of 13,745 cancer patients across three treatment phases. The relapse/metastasis phase incurred the highest per case costs, varying from $8,890 to $14,572, while the follow-up phase was the least costly, ranging from $1,840 to $4,431. Being in the relapse/metastasis phase and having an advanced clinical stage of cancer at diagnosis were associated with significantly higher cost, while patients with low socioeconomic status borne lower costs., Conclusions: There were substantial financial burden on patients with six leading cancers in China. Tuberculosis has posed a serious threat to human health. It is imperative to investigate the geographic prevalence of tuberculosis and medication resistance, as this information is essential for informing strategies for its prevention and treatment. Drug resistance was identified using a proportion method. Drug-resistant genes and pathways were predicted using whole genome sequencing. The drug resistance range of bedaquiline was identified using the microporous plate two-fold dilution method, and drug resistance genes were studied using sequencing. The study revealed that 19.99% of the tuberculosis cases had multidrug resistance. The genes of M. tuberculosis are predominantly involved in the synthesis of ABC transporters, two-component systems, and bacterial secretion systems, as well as in energy production and conversion, and lipid transport and metabolism. The genes encode for 82.45% of carbohydrate-related enzymes such as glycoside hydrolases, glycosyl transferases, and carbohydrate esterases. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of bedaquiline against clinical strains was approximately 0.06 μg/mL, with identified mutations in drug-resistant genes Rv0678, atpE, and pepQ, specifically V152A, P62A, and T222N, respectively. The multidrug resistance tuberculosis development was attributed to the strong medication resistance exhibited. It was concluded that tuberculosis had presented a high level of drug resistance. Phenotypic resistance was related to genes, existing potential genetic resistance in M. tuberculosis. Background/objectives: Steelworkers are more likely to have a higher prevalence of hyperuricemia due to their exposure to special occupational factors and dietary habits. The interrelationships of visceral adiposity index (VAI), hyperuricemia, and drinking tea remain uncertain. This study aimed to assess the association between VAI and hyperuricemia among steelworkers, and if drinking tea modified this association., Methods: A total of 9928 steelworkers from Hunan Hualing Xiangtan Iron and Steel Company participated in this cross-sectional study. All participants completed a questionnaire, received anthropometric measurements, and provided blood samples for biochemical testing. Three logistic regression models were used to analyze the association between VAI and hyperuricemia., Results: In this study, the prevalence of hyperuricemia was approximately 23.74% (males: 24.41%; females: 20.63%), and a positive correlation between VAI and hyperuricemia risk was observed. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, the risk of hyperuricemia increased 1.76 times (95% CI: 1.64-1.89) and 2.13 times (95% CI: 1.76-2.57) with the increase of ln VAI in males and females, respectively. For males, compared to quartile 1, the risk of hyperuricemia in the second, third, and fourth quartile of VAI were 1.75 (95% CI: 1.11-2.71), 2.56 (95% CI: 1.67-3.93) and 4.89 (95% CI: 3.22-7.43). For females, compared to quartile 1, the risk of hyperuricemia in the second, third, and fourth quartile of VAI were 1.99 (95% CI: 1.40-2.82), 2.92 (95% CI: 1.96-4.34) and 4.51 (95% CI: 2.89-7.02). Additionally, our study found that, compared with not consuming tea, drinking tea could reduce uric acid levels by 0.014 in male steelworkers ( t = -2.051, p = 0.040), 0.020 in workers consuming smoked food ( t = -2.569, p = 0.010), and 0.022 in workers consuming pickled food ( t = -2.764, p = 0.006)., Conclusions: In conclusion, VAI is positively correlated with hyperuricemia in steelworkers. Drinking tea may lower uric acid levels in male steelworkers and steelworkers who prefer smoked and pickled foods.

Background: The short-term adverse effects of ambient fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) and ozone (O 3 ) on anxiety disorders (ADs) remained inconclusive., Methods: We applied an individual-level time-stratified case-crossover study, which including 126,112 outpatient visits for ADs during 2019-2021 in Guangdong province, China, to investigate the association of short-term exposure to PM 2.5 and O 3 with outpatient visits for ADs, and estimate excess outpatient visits in South China. Daily residential air pollutant exposure assessments were performed by extracting grid data (spatial resolution: 1 km × 1 km) from validated datasets. We employed the conditional logistic regression model to quantify the associations and excess outpatient visits., Results: The results of the single-pollutant models showed that each 10 μg/m 3 increase of PM 2.5 and O 3 exposures was significantly associated with a 3.14 % (95 % confidence interval: 2.47 %, 3.81 %) and 0.88 % (0.49 %, 1.26 %) increase in odds of outpatient visits for ADs, respectively. These associations remained robust in 2-pollutant models. The proportion of outpatient visits attributable to PM 2.5 and O 3 exposures was up to 7.20 % and 8.93 %, respectively. Considering the extremely high content of soil mineral elements in high geological background areas, it is crucial to understand the transportation and health risks of mineral elements in soil-plant systems. In this study, 30 soil and apple-paired samples were collected from the main apple production areas of Yunnan's high geological background region to determine the contents of mineral elements. The aim was to research the enrichment characteristics, nutritional values, and health risks associated with 12 mineral elements in apples. The results revealed that Cd, As, Pb and Cr contents in soil samples exceeded their corresponding risk screening values with percentages of 50%, 17%, 48%, and 30%, respectively. However, only 13.3% of Pb content in apple samples exceeded the safety limit （0.1 mg·kg -1 , fresh fruit）. In addition to the toxic elements, apples had higher contents of K, Ca, Mg, Mn, and Zn, with average contents of 1.241 g·kg -1 , 0.045 g·kg -1 , 0.061 g·kg -1 , 0.648 mg·kg -1 , and 0.944 mg·kg -1 , respectively. The nutritional evaluation results showed that the index （INQ） of K and Cu were higher than 2 through the consumption of apples, suggesting that apple consumption was one of the primary sources of K and Cu intake. The health risk assessment revealed that the target hazard quotient （THQ） of a single heavy metal was： Cu &gt; As &gt; Cr &gt; Pb &gt; Zn &gt; Cd； the hazard index （HI） of all heavy metals was far lower than 1, indicating that apple consumption did not pose significant heavy metal exposure risks. The results of this study will provide a scientific insight into the nutritional aspects and health risks associated with mineral elements in soil-plant systems within high geological background areas.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe nurses' experiences of caring for patients with colorectal cancer who underwent surgery to create a spontaneously closed defunctioning tube ileostomy after low anterior resection., Design: Exploratory, descriptive study., Subjects and Settings: Data were collected from 6 registered nurses specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence Care (WOC nurses). The patient cohort comprised 247 hospitalized patients with histologically confirmed colorectal cancer who underwent low anterior resection of the rectum and creation of a closed defunctioning tube ileostomy. The study setting was the First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine., Methods: Semi-structured interviews and content analysis were used to collect and analyze data. The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Care nurses visited patient participants 1 week after hospital discharge and 1 to 2 times per week until the cannula was removed and the ostomy wound closed. Data were collected over a 6-month span after the surgery from January 2016 to December 2018., Results: Content analysis identified 7 management strategies unique to caring for patients with a closed defunctioning tube ileostomy. They are: (1) cannula fixation (securement); (2) maintaining inflation of the cannular balloon to prevent fecal flow into the distal bowel, (3) cannular patency, (4) dietary advice for prevention of cannular blockage, (5) selecting an ostomy pouching system, (6) patient education, and (7) care during and following cannula removal (extubation)., Conclusions: We identified 7 areas of nursing care unique to the closed defunctioning tube ileostomy that provide a basis for creating clinical guidelines for patients undergoing this procedure., Competing Interests: The authors declare no financial conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Global warming is altering the frequency of extreme rainfall events and introducing uncertainties for non-point source pollution (NPSP). This research centers on orchard-influenced planting areas (OIPA) in the Wulong River Watershed of Shandong Province, China, which are known for their heightened nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) pollution. Leveraging meteorological data from both historical (1989-2018) and projected future periods (2041-2100), this research identified five extreme rainfall indices (ERI): R10 (moderate rain), R20 (heavy rain), R50 (rainstorm), R95p (Daily rainfall between the 95th and 99th percentile of the rainfall), and R99p (>99th percentile). Utilizing an advanced watershed hydrological model, SWAT-CO 2 , this study carried out a comparison between ERI and average conditions and evaluated the effects of ERI on the hydrology and nutrient losses in this coastal watershed. The findings revealed that the growth multiples of precipitation in the OIPA for five ERI varied between 16 and 59 times for the historical period and 14 to 65 times for future climate scenarios compared to the average conditions. The most pronounced increases in surface runoff and total phosphorus (TP) loss were observed with R50, R95p, and R99p, showing growth multiples as high as 352 and 330 times, and total nitrogen (TN) growth multiples varied between 4.6 and 30.3 times. The contribution rates of R50 and R99p for surface runoff and TP loss in the OIPA during all periods exceeded 55%, however, TN exhibited the opposite trend, primarily due to the dominated NO 3 -N leaching in the sandy soil. Assessment of Acute Mountain Sickness: Comparing the Chinese Ams Score to the Lake Louise Score. High Alt Med Biol 25:164-173, 2024. Objective: To compare the ability of the Chinese AMS Score (CAS) to detect acute mountain sickness (AMS) using the 2018 version of the Lake Louise Score (LLS) as reference. Methods: After flying from Chengdu (altitude: 500 m) to Lhasa (3,658 m), 2,486 young men completed a questionnaire. The questionnaire contained LLS and CAS items. An LLS ≥3 and/or a CAS ≥cutoff were used as the criteria for AMS. Hierarchical cluster analysis and two-step cluster analysis were used to investigate relationships between the symptoms. Results: AMS incidence rates were 33.8% ( n = 840) with the LLS and 59.3% ( n = 1,473) with the CAS ( χ 2 = 872.5, p < 0.001). The LLS and CAS had a linear relationship (orthogonal regression, Pearson r = 0.91, p < 0.001). With the LLS as the standard, the CAS had high diagnostic accuracy (area under the curve = 0.95, 95% confidence interval: 0.94-0.96). However, with the CAS, 25.5% ( n = 633) more participants were labeled as having AMS than with the LLS (false positives). Two clusters were identified: one with headache only (419 participants, 66.2%) and one without headache but with other symptoms (214 participants, 33.8%). Reducing the weight of headache in the CAS allowed to align CAS and LLS. Conclusion: In comparison to the LLS, the CAS has a sensitivity close to 100% but lacks specificity given the high rate of false positives. The different weight of headaches may be the main reason for the discrepancy.

Short-term ambient fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) exposure has been related to an increased risk of myocardial infarction (MI) death, but which PM 2.5 constituents are associated with MI death and to what extent remain unclear. We aimed to explore the associations of short-term exposure to PM 2.5 constituents with MI death and evaluate excess mortality. We conducted a time-stratified case-crossover study on 237,492 MI decedents in Jiangsu province, China during 2015-2021. Utilizing a validated PM 2.5 constituents grid dataset at 1 km spatial resolution, we estimated black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC), sulfate (SO 4 2- ), nitrate (NO 3 - ), ammonium (NH 4 + ), and chloride (Cl - ) exposure by extracting daily concentrations grounding on the home address of each subject. We employed conditional logistic regression models to evaluate the exposure-response relationship between PM 2.5 constituents and MI death. Overall, per interquartile range (IQR) increase of BC (lag 06-day; IQR: 1.75 μg/m 3 ) and SO 4 2- (lag 04-day; IQR: 5.06 μg/m 3 ) exposures were significantly associated with a 3.91% and 2.94% increase in odds of MI death, respectively, and no significant departure from linearity was identified in the exposure-response curves for BC and SO 4 2- . If BC and SO 4 2- exposures were reduced to theoretical minimal risk exposure concentration (0.89 μg/m 3 and 1.51 μg/m 3 ), an estimate of 4.55% and 4.80% MI deaths would be avoided, respectively. We did not find robust associations of OC, NO 3 - , NH 4 + , and Cl - exposures with MI death. Individuals aged ≥80 years were more vulnerable to PM 2.5 constituent exposures in MI death (p for difference <0.05). In conclusion, short-term exposure to PM 2.5 -bound BC and SO 4 2- was significantly associated with increased odds of MI death and resulted in extensive excess mortality, notably in older adults. Objectives: To develop and externally validate a machine learning-based fall prediction model for ambulatory nursing home residents. The focus is on predicting fall occurrences within 6 months after baseline assessment through a binary classification task, aiming to provide staff with an effective and user-friendly fall-risk assessment tool., Design: Prospective cohort study., Setting and Participants: A total of 864 older residents living in 4 nursing homes between May 2022 and March 2023 in China., Methods: Potential fall-risk predictors were collected through in-person interviews and assessments of anthropometric and physical function. Participants were followed for 6 months, with falls recorded by trained nurses. Seven machine learning algorithms, including Logistic Regression (LR), Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Neural Networks (NN), and Decision Tree (DT), were used to develop prediction models. Performance was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC-AUC) and Precision-Recall curve (PR-AUC), with calibration assessed via a calibration curve. Feature importance was visualized using SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP)., Results: The 6 selected predictors were balance, grip strength, fatigue, fall history, age, and comorbidity. The ROC-AUC for the models ranged from 0.710 to 0.750, PR-AUC from 0.415 to 0.473, sensitivity from 0.704 to 0.914, and specificity from 0.511 to 0.687 in the validation cohort. The LR model was converted into a nomogram., Conclusions and Implications: The machine learning-based fall-prediction models effectively identified nursing home residents at high risk of falls. Ophiuroids, as an important group of echinoderms, are widely distributed in marine benthic habitats. Previous studies have identified two primary feeding types of ophiuroids in the Yellow Sea, including carnivorous (Ophiura sarsii vadicola and Stegophiura sladeni) and suspension feeders (Ophiopholis mirabilis). Despite their ecological role in the benthic food webs, little is known about their accumulation of trace metal elements (TMEs). In this study, the content of TMEs (Pb, As, Cd, Hg, Cr, Cu, Zn), methylmercury (MeHg) and δ 15 N value of three ophiuroids species from the North Yellow Sea were determined. Our results showed that the contents of some TMEs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn) and MeHg were significantly different in three species of ophiuroid (p < 0.05). There were significant correlations between the accumulations of trace metal elements (Pb, Cd and Zn) and the δ 15 N value of the ophiuroids (p < 0.05). Additionally, As and Zn exhibited opposite correlations in ophiuroid with two feeding types, which may be related to their host species and different feeding habits. Ensuring food security is not only vital to the adequate supply of food in the world, but also the key to the economic development and social stability of various countries. Based on the panel data of 29 provinces in China from 2016 to 2020, this paper selects the number of foodborne diseases patients and iodine deficiency disease patients as reference objects, uses stunting rate of children under 5 years old, malnutrition rate of children under 5 years old, obesity rate of children under 5 years old, and newborn visit rate to measure improving nutrition, proposes Meta Entropy Two-Stage Dynamic Direction Distance Function (DDF) Under an exogenous Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model to measure the efficiency of hunger eradication, food security, and improving nutrition under the influence of exogenous variable rainfall. The research results indicate that the sustainability of China's agricultural economy is insufficient, and the focus of attention should be different in different stages. In addition, the average efficiency of the three regions generally shows a decreasing level in the eastern, western, and central regions. Background: Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers in China and seriously threaten life and health of Chinese people. We analysed the trends and disparities of oral cancer mortality rates and the disease burden of oral cancer in China from 2006 to 2021 to provide a reference for its prevention and control., Methods: Annual death data for oral cancer was gleaned from the China Death Surveillance Database. The age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), annual percentage change (APC), and average APC (AAPC) were used to analyze the trend of mortality. Loss of life expectancy (LLE) and years of life lost (YLL) were adopted to assess disease burden., Results: From 2006 to 2021, the overall ASMR of oral cancer lightly declined (AAPC: - 0.97%; 95% CI: - 1.89%, - 0.04%), and the similar trend was observed among females (AAPC: - 1.22%; 95% CI: - 1.89%, - 0.55%). The ASMR of males was 2.31-3.16 times higher than that of females per year. The median of LLE for overall, males and females caused by oral cancer from 2006 to 2021 were 0.05, 0.06 and 0.03 years, respectively. There was a decrease of standardized YLL rate from 2006 to 2021 for overall (AAPC: - 1.31%, 95% CI: - 2.24% ~  - 0.37%) and for female (AAPC: - 1.63%, 95% CI: - 2.30% ~  - 0.95%). ASMR in urban areas was 1.02-1.28 times higher than that in rural areas from 2006 to2011, but 0.85-0.97 times lower in urban areas than that in rural areas from 2018 to 2021. The disease burden was higher in urban areas than in rural areas in 2006, whereas the reverse was observed in 2021., Conclusions: There are severe health gaps and disparities in trends between sexes and different areas in China. Background: Sex is a crucial factor in the development, progression, and treatment of cancer, making it vital to examine cancer incidence trends by sex for effective prevention strategies., Objective: This study aimed to assess the incidence of cancer in China between 2007 and 2021, with a focus on sex-based trends., Methods: A population-based cancer registry comprising 14.14 million individuals was maintained between 2007 and 2021 by the Beijing Municipal Health Big Data and Policy Research Center. The age-standardized rates (ASRs) of cancers were calculated using the Segi population. The average annual percentage of change (AAPC) was evaluated using the joinpoint regression model, while the Bayesian age-period-cohort model was used to predict cancer incidence in the next 10 years., Results: From 2007 to 2021, the study included 651,342 incident patients with cancer, of whom 51.2% (n=333,577) were women. The incidence indicated by the ASR for all cancers combined was 200.8 per 100,000 for women and 184.4 per 100,000 for men. The increase in incidence indicated by AAPC for all malignancies combined significantly increased in women between 2007 and 2021 (AAPC=3.1%; P<.001), whereas it remained constant in men (AAPC=0.3%; P=.30). Although the overall incidence of all cancers indicated by AAPC increased in young men (AAPC=3.2%; P=.01), the greatest increase was observed among young women (AAPC=6.1%; P<.001). The incidence rate ratio for cancer in women increased among subsequent younger generations compared with patients born in the 1962-1966 cohort. Coastal areas are often affected by a variety of climates, and microbial composition patterns are conducive to adaptation to these environments. In this study, the composition and pattern of microbial communities in the Shantou sea from four seasons were analyzed. The diversity of microbial community was significant differences under different seasons (p < 0.01). Meanwhile, dissolved oxygen levels, temperature were key factors to shift microbial communities. The assembly mechanism of microbial communities was constructed by the iCAMP (Infer community assembly mechanism by the phylogenetic bin-based null). Interestingly, the analyses revealed that drift was the predominant driver of this process (44.5 %), suggesting that microbial community assembly in this setting was dominated by stochastic processes. For example, Vibrio was found to be particularly susceptible to stochastic processes, indicating that the pattern of bacterial community was governed by stochastic processes. Based on city-level panel data spanning 2008 to 2021, this study investigates the impact of government environmental attention (GEA) on green total factor productivity (GTFP). The findings suggest that increased GEA substantially enhances the growth of GTFP. After conducting robustness and endogeneity tests, the study's results consistently show reliability and robustness. Further analysis elucidates several mechanisms through which GEA influences GTFP, including fostering green technology innovation, optimizing resource allocation, and promoting upgrades in industrial structure. Heterogeneity analyses reveal that the impact of GEA on GTFP is notably pronounced in eastern cities, as well as in cities characterized by low resource dependency, mature industrial development, and high market competition. Conversely, the influence of GEA on GTFP is less discernible in cities prioritizing economic development goals, possibly due to differing policy orientations and resource allocation strategies. Purpose: To assess the prevalence of and risk factors for fundus pathology in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a cohort from northeastern China., Methods: Patients were included from the Fushun Diabetic Retinopathy Cohort Study. Patients aged ≥ 30 years with T2DM were recruited between July 2012 and May 2013. Fundus pathology included retinal vascular occlusion (RVO), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), macular pathology, pathologic myopia (PM) and glaucomatous optic atrophy (GOA)., Results: A Total of 1998 patients with gradable fundus photographs were included in this study, of whom 388 (19.42%) had fundus pathology regardless of whether they had diabetic retinopathy (DR). There were 187 (9.36%) patients with AMD, 97 (4.85%) with GOA, 67 (3.35%) with macular pathology, 35 (1.75%) with PM and 23 (1.15%) with RVO. Advanced age was significantly associated with AMD (odds ratio (OR), 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03, 1.01-1.05), macular pathology (OR, 95% CI: 1.06, 1.03-1.09) and GOA (OR, 95% CI: 1.06, 1.04-1.09). A wider central retinal arteriolar equivalent was protective against PM (OR, 95% CI: 0.78, 0.66-0.92). Wider central retinal venular equivalent was a protective factor for PM (OR, 95% CI: 0.75, 0.68-0.82) and GOA (OR, 95% CI: 0.93, 0.87-0.99)., Conclusions: One-fifth of these patients in northeast China with T2DM had fundus pathology regardless of whether they had DR, indicating the importance of early screening and long-term follow-up.

Danzhou chicken (DZ) is a local breed in China noted for its strong adaptability, roughage resistance, strong wildness, and delicious taste, thus containing important genetic resources. In this study, genome re-sequencing data was generated from 200 DZ chickens. Combined with previously generated data from 72 additional chickens across six other exotic and local breeds, these data were used to systematically evaluate the germplasm characteristics of DZ chickens from a genomic perspective. Unlike exotic breeds, both DZ and southern local chicken varieties exhibited high genetic diversity, and the genetic distance between DZ and southern local chickens was smaller than the genetic distance between DZ and exotic chickens. A reconstructed Neighbor-Joining phylogenetic tree indicated that all sampled populations clustered into single independent populations, with DZ chickens showing clear evidence of intra-population differentiation, forming 2 subpopulations. Principal component analysis and ADMIXTURE analysis showed that DZ was significantly different from other breeds. These results indicate that DZ is a unique genetic resource that is different from other southern native and exotic chickens. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation appears to be associated with a lower blood pressure. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether food-sourced CoQ10 will affect new-onset hypertension in general adults. This study investigated the relationship between dietary CoQ10 intake and new-onset hypertension among the general population. Participants without hypertension at baseline from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) prospective cohort study were included (n = 11,428). Dietary CoQ10 intake was collected by validated dietary recalls and the food weighing method. Linear and non-linear relationships between dietary CoQ10 intake and new-onset hypertension were analyzed using multivariable Cox proportional hazards models and restricted cubic splines. During follow-up (median: 6 years), 4006 new-onset hypertension cases were documented. Compared with non-consumers, the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) from quintile 2 to 4 total dietary CoQ10 were 0.83 (0.76, 0.91), 0.86 (0.78, 0.94) and 1.01 (0.92, 1.11); total plant-derived CoQ10 were 0.80 (0.73, 0.88), 1.00 (0.91, 1.09) and 1.10 (1.00, 1.20); and animal-derived CoQ10 were 0.65 (0.59, 0.71), 0.58 (0.53, 0.64) and 0.68 (0.62, 0.75). The lowest risk was found at moderate intake, with a non-linear relationship ( P nonlinearity < 0.05). Furthermore, the overall inverse association was stronger among individuals without alcohol consumption or eating a low-fat diet. Moderate long-term dietary CoQ10 intake might be protective against new-onset hypertension. However, it follows a non-linear relationship and excessive intake may increase the risk of new-onset hypertension in the Chinese population.

Background: Sarcopenia is a common cause of disability in the aging population, and managing sarcopenia is an important step in building intrinsic capacity and promoting healthy aging. A growing body of evidence suggests that sleep deprivation may be a mediator of the development of sarcopenia. The purpose of this study was to explore the longitudinal association between sleep duration and possible sarcopenia using data from a national sample., Methods: Two waves of data from the CHARLS database for 2011 and 2015 were used in this study. All possible sarcopenia participants met the Asia Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 (AWGS 2019) diagnostic criteria. Sleep duration was assessed using a self-report questionnaire, and sleep duration was categorized as short (≤ 6 h), medium (6-8 h), or long (> 8 h) based on previous studies. Longitudinal associations between sleep duration and possible sarcopenia will be calculated by univariate and multifactorial logistic regression analyses and expressed as odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: A total of 5654 individuals participated in the follow-up study, with a prevalence of possible sarcopenia of 53.72% (578) in the short sleep duration group, 38.29% (412) in the medium sleep duration group, and 7.99% (86) in the long sleep duration group. According to the crude model of the second-wave follow-up study, short sleep durations were significantly more strongly associated with possible sarcopenia than were medium and long sleep durations (OR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.17-1.55, P = 0.000). The association between short sleep duration and possible sarcopenia was maintained even after adjustment for covariates such as age, gender, residence, education level, BMI, smoking status, alcohol consumption and comorbidities (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.02-1.36, P = 0.029). In the subgroup analysis, short sleep duration was associated with low grip strength (OR: 1.20, 95% CI: 1.02-1.41, P = 0.031)., Conclusions: Sleep deprivation may be closely associated with the development of possible sarcopenia in middle-aged and elderly people, which provides new insights and ideas for sarcopenia intervention, and further studies are needed to reveal the underlying mechanisms involved., (© 2024. Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) pose a significant threat to human and animal health. However, the diversity and antibiotic resistance of animal ExPEC, and their connection to human infections, remain largely unexplored. The study performs large-scale genome sequencing and antibiotic resistance testing of 499 swine-derived ExPEC isolates from China. Results show swine ExPEC are phylogenetically diverse, with over 80% belonging to phylogroups B1 and A. Importantly, 15 swine ExPEC isolates exhibit genetic relatedness to human-origin E. coli strains. Additionally, 49 strains harbor toxins typical of enteric E. coli pathotypes, implying hybrid pathotypes. Notably, 97% of the total strains are multidrug resistant, including resistance to critical human drugs like third- and fourth-generation cephalosporins. Correspondingly, genomic analysis unveils prevalent antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), often associated with co-transfer mechanisms. Furthermore, analysis of 20 complete genomes illuminates the transmission pathways of ARGs within swine ExPEC and to human pathogens. For example, the transmission of plasmids co-harboring fosA3, bla CTX-M-14 , and mcr-1 genes between swine ExPEC and human-origin Salmonella enterica is observed. Background: Constipation is common in elderly inpatients with intracerebral hemorrhage. This study aimed to construct a model for predicting the risk of constipation in elderly inpatients with intracerebral hemorrhage and to provide reference for formulating targeted intervention measures. Methods: Elderly patients with intracerebral hemorrhage who were treated in the department of Neurosurgery of a third-class hospital in Suzhou from January 2018 to September 2023 were included. Clinical data of patients with and without constipation were compared. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the influencing factors of constipation in elderly patients with intracerebral hemorrhage, and R software was used to construct a line chart model to verify its predictive effect. Results: A total of 504 elderly patients with intracerebral hemorrhage were included. The incidence of constipation in elderly patients with cerebral hemorrhage was 63.9%. Logistic regression analysis showed that GCS score (OR = 1.094, 95%CI: 1.019∼1.174), hypertension (OR = 2.911, 95%CI: 1.797∼4.715), use of dehydrating agent (OR = 3.794, 95%CI: 2.337∼6.158), surgical treatment (OR = 3.986, 95%CI: 2.339∼6.793), use of sedative drugs (OR = 4.212, 95%CI:2.386-7.435), and limb paralysis (OR = 6.313, 95%CI:3.689∼10.803) were the independent risk factors for constipation in elderly patients with intracerebral hemorrhage. The area under the ROC curve of the prediction model was 0.872 (95%CI: 0.8401∼0.9033), the best critical value was 0.705, the sensitivity was 0.748, and the specificity was 0.857. The evidence regarding the effects of blood pressure changes on older individuals remains inconclusive, and the impact of frailty throughout the life course is not known. We investigated the associations of different change patterns of blood pressure during 3-year intervals with frailty and mortality. Participants included 7335 persons from 2008 to 2014 of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Change in blood pressure was calculated as the difference between follow-up and baseline. Frailty was evaluated using a 40-item frailty index. Mortality status was ascertained up to December 31, 2014. The mean age of participants was 82.6 ± 10.7 years. The optimal blood pressure level (SBP, 130-150 mmHg; DBP, 70-90 mmHg) was associated with the lowest risk of frailty while decreasing follow-up SBP and DBP were significantly correlated with frailty. Lower baseline blood pressure levels (SBP < 130 mmHg; DBP < 70 mmHg) were associated with decreased mortality risk when participants increased their blood pressure to optimal levels during follow-up SBP and DBP (0.78, 0.63-0.98), compared to maintaining a steady low SBP (< 130 mmHg) and DBP (< 70 mmHg). For those with DBP around 70-90 mmHg, decreasing follow-up DBP (< 70 mmHg) was associated with higher mortality (1.23, 1.07-1.42) compared to maintaining stable follow-up DBP (70-90 mmHg). These results remain significant after adjusting for frailty. Optimal blood pressure levels were associated with the lowest risk of frailty. The association between lower blood pressure and increased mortality risk persisted even after accounting for frailty. Background: IgA vasculitis (IgAV), previously known as Henoch-Schönlein purpura, is an IgA-mediated systemic small vessel vasculitis that tends to be more severe in adults than in children. Early diagnosis of IgAV involving the gastrointestinal tract remains difficult, especially in patients who present with gastrointestinal symptoms before purpura. This study aims to systematically analyze the abdominal imaging and endoscopic features of adult patients with abdominal IgAV, providing assistance to clinicians in the early recognition of this condition., Patients and Methods: This multicenter retrospective study was conducted in three large tertiary hospitals in China from January 2017 to January 2024. A total of 108 adult patients with abdominal IgAV, who had complete abdominal imaging and/or endoscopy results, were enrolled. The clinical manifestations, abdominal imaging findings, endoscopic characteristics, and serological indicators of the patients were analyzed., Results: The median age of the patients was 40 years (IQR: 26-55), with a male-to-female ratio of 2:1. Acute abdominal pain was the most common presenting symptom (100 patients, 92.59%). Bowel wall thickening was the most frequent finding on abdominal imaging (50/86 patients, 58.14%). Gastrointestinal endoscopy showed findings of congestion and erosion (32/67 patients, 47.76%), and erosion with ulcers (21/67 patients, 31.34%). Among patients with both imaging and endoscopic results, the duodenum (28/51 patients, 54.90%) and ileum (28/51 patients, 54.90%) were the most commonly affected sites. Laboratory findings revealed elevated white blood cell count (WBC), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer and fibrinogen levels, along with decreased albumin level. Comparing patients with gastrointestinal symptoms versus purpura as the initial symptom, those with gastrointestinal symptoms had higher levels of WBC ( p  < 0.05) and NLR ( p  < 0.01)., Conclusions: The most common symptom in adult abdominal IgAV patients is acute abdominal pain. In the early stage of the disease, most patients exhibit elevated levels of WBC, NLR, CRP, D-dimer, and fibrinogen, along with decreased albumin level. The duodenum and ileum are the most commonly affected sites. By integrating these findings, clinicians can identify abdominal IgAV patients earlier and more accurately.

Rewilding abandoned farmlands provides a nature-based climate solution via carbon (C) offsetting; however, the C-cycle-climate feedback in such restored ecosystems is poorly understood. Therefore, we conducted a 2-year field experiment in Loess Plateau, China, to determine the impacts of warming (∼1.4 °C) and altered precipitation (±25 %, ±50 %, and ambient), alone or in concert on soil C pools and associated C fluxes. Experimental warming significantly enhanced soil respiration without affecting the ecosystem net C uptake and soil C storage; these variables tended to increase along the manipulated precipitation gradient. Their interactions increased ecosystem net C uptake (synergism) but decreased soil respiration and soil C accumulation (antagonism) compared with a single warming or altered precipitation. Additionally, most variables related to the C cycle tended to be more responsive to increased precipitation, but the ecosystem net C uptake responded intensely to warming and decreased precipitation. Overall, ecosystem net C uptake and soil C storage increased by 94.4 % and 8.2 %, respectively, under the warmer-wetter scenario; however, phosphorus deficiency restricted soil C accumulation under these climatic conditions. By contrast, ecosystem net C uptake and soil C storage decreased by 56.6 % and 13.6 %, respectively, when exposed to the warmer-drier climate, intensifying its tendency toward a C source. Therefore, the C sink function of semiarid abandoned farmland was unsustainable. China is the largest global orchard distribution area, where high fertilization rates, complex terrain, and uncertainties associated with future climate change present challenges in managing non-point source pollution (NPSP) in orchard-dominant growing areas (ODGA). Given the complex processes of climate, hydrology, and soil nutrient loss, this study utilized an enhanced Soil and Water Assessment Tool model (SWAT-CO 2 ) to investigate the impact of future climate on NPSP in ODGA in a coastal basin of North China. Our investigation focused on climate-induced variations in hydrology, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) losses in soil, considering three Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) climate scenarios: SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5. Research results indicated that continuous changes in CO 2 levels significantly influenced evapotranspiration (ET) and water yield in ODGA. Influenced by sandy soils, nitrate leaching through percolation was the principal pathway for N loss in the ODGA. Surface runoff was identified as the primary pathway for P loss. Compared to the reference period (1971-2000), under three future climate scenarios, the increase in precipitation of ODGA ranged from 15% to 28%, while the growth rates of P loss and surface runoff were the most significant, both exceeding 120%. Orchards in the northwest basin proved susceptible to nitrate leaching, while others were more sensitive to N and P losses via surface runoff. Livestock and poultry products are an essential human food source. However, the rapid development of the livestock sector (LS) has caused it to become a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Consequently, investigating the spatio-temporal characteristics and evolution of GHG emissions is crucial to facilitate the green development of the LS and achieve "peak carbon and carbon neutrality". This study combined life cycle assessment (LCA) with the IPCC Tier II method to construct a novel GHG emissions inventory. The GHG emissions of 31 provinces in China from 2000 to 2021 were calculated, and their spatio-temporal characteristics were revealed. Then, the stochastic impacts by regression on population, affluence, and technology (STIRPAT) model was used to identify the main driving factors of GHG emissions in six regions of China and explore the emission reduction potential. The results showed that GHG emissions increased and then decreased from 2000 to 2021, following a gradual and steady trend. The peak of 628.55 Mt CO 2 -eq was reached in 2006. The main GHG-producing segments were enteric fermentation, slaughtering and processing, and manure management, accounting for 45.39 %, 26.34 %, and 23.08 % of total GHG emissions, respectively. Overall, the center of gravity of GHG emissions in China migrated northward, with spatial aggregation observed since 2016. The high emission intensity regions were mainly located west of the "Hu Huanyong line". Economic efficiency and emissions intensity were the main drivers of GHG emissions. Under the baseline scenario, GHG emissions are not projected to peak until 2050. Therefore, urgent action is needed to promote the low-carbon green development of the LS in China. The results can serve as scientific references for the macro-prevention and control of GHG emissions, aiding strategic decision-making. This study investigated dissolved PAHs and OCPs in Quanzhou Bay estuaries, assessed their ecological risk, and examined anthropogenic impacts on contaminant distribution. Results showed that dissolved ∑ 24 PAH concentrations ranged from 117 to 709 ng/L (mean: 358 ng/L), with dominance of 2-ring PAHs (Naphthalene, 1-Methylnaphthalene, and 2-Methylnaphthalene). Dissolved DDT levels ranged from 0.06 to 0.49 ng/L (mean: 0.28 ng/L), while HCBz concentrations varied from 0.02 to 0.44 ng/L (mean: 0.20 ng/L). PAHs were higher in the north due to urbanization and transport, while OCPs showed higher levels in the south due to historical agricultural use. Rural areas, water bodies, and wetlands significantly influenced the behavior of PAHs according to Spearman correlation and lasso regression analyses. Quanzhou Bay was categorized as a low to medium risk area based on dispersion simulation and ecological risk assessment, highlighting implications for future sustainable development and policy planning. Since the early 20th century, China has gradually established a clinical, educational, and research system centered around modern scientific medicine, which has now become the dominant force in China's medical and health system and services, with the construction and development of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College as the most prominent symbol. The scientific medicine in the new era requires close cooperation across multiple disciplines and fields to build a high-quality and efficient medical and health service system. It also involves combining the excellent traditional Chinese culture with Western medicine to explore a unique path of modern scientific medicine with Chinese characteristics.

Bellamya purificata is an important medicinal value and economically farmed species in China. However, because little is known about the genetic characteristics of this species, the utilization of high-quality germplasm resources is hindered. The study examined the genetic differentiation between, and the structure of 12 B. purificata populations in Guangxi using 7 microsatellite DNA markers. High genetic diversity occurred in each population, with mean observed heterozygosity 0.655 and a mean expected heterozygosity 0.832. Analysis of molecular variance reveals genetic diversity to be greater within (95.2%) than among populations (4.8%). Genetic differentiation between populations is weak (Fst = 0.048, P < 0.001), with mixing of genetic clusters prevalent at the level of the individual. Genetic flow exists between populations (Nm = 3.084-11.778), with Longshui and Guilin populations exchanging frequently. A Mantel test reveals a low correlation between geographic and genetic distances (r = 0.2482, P < 0.071), suggesting that dispersal between neighboring populations facilitates population exchange. No significant heterozygosity excess was observed for any population (P > 0.05), indicating a lack of recent genetic bottlenecks. Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a globally increasing health epidemic. Lifestyle intervention is recommended as the main therapy for NAFLD. However, the optimal approach is still unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a comprehensive approach of intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI) concerning enhanced control of calorie-restricted diet (CRD), exercise, and personalized nutrition counseling on liver steatosis and extrahepatic metabolic status in Chinese overweight and obese patients with NAFLD., Methods: This study was a multicenter randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted across seven hospitals in China. It involved 226 participants with a body mass index (BMI) above 25. These participants were randomly assigned to two groups: the ILI group, which followed a low carbohydrate, high protein CRD combined with exercise and intensive counseling from a dietitian, and a control group, which adhered to a balanced CRD along with exercise and standard counseling. The main measure of the study was the change in the fat attenuation parameter (FAP) from the start of the study to week 12, analyzed within the per-protocol set. Secondary measures included changes in BMI, liver stiffness measurement (LSM), and the improvement of various metabolic indexes. Additionally, predetermined subgroup analyses of the FAP were conducted based on variables like gender, age, BMI, ethnicity, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension., Results: A total of 167 participants completed the whole study. Compared to the control group, ILI participants achieved a significant reduction in FAP (LS mean difference, 16.07 [95% CI: 8.90-23.25] dB/m) and BMI (LS mean difference, 1.46 [95% CI: 1.09-1.82] kg/m 2 ) but not in LSM improvement (LS mean difference, 0.20 [95% CI: -0.19-0.59] kPa). The ILI also substantially improved other secondary outcomes (including ALT, AST, GGT, body fat mass, muscle mass and skeletal muscle mass, triglyceride, fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, HOMA-β, blood pressure, and homocysteine). Further subgroup analyses showed that ILI, rather than control intervention, led to more significant FAP reduction, especially in patients with concurrent hypertension (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: In this RCT, a 12-week intensive lifestyle intervention program led to significant improvements in liver steatosis and other metabolic indicators in overweight and obese Chinese patients suffering from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. To identify different patterns of neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction management among Chinese community-dwelling individuals with spinal cord injury and explore the factors associated with latent classes. This was a cross-sectional study conducted in communities throughout China Mainland. Participants were recruited through the China Association of Persons with Physical Disability and a total of 2582 participants was included in the analysis. The data were collected by a questionnaire consisting of socio-demographic factors, disease-related factors, and a list of 8 bladder management methods. Latent class analysis was used to identify different latent classes of neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction management. Then the multinomial logistic regression was applied to analyze the relationship between neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction management patterns and socio-demographic and disease-related factors. Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction management pattern among community-dwelling individuals with spinal cord injury was divided into four latent classes: "urinal collecting apparatus dominated pattern" (40.3%), "bladder compression dominated pattern" (30.7%), "intermittent catheterization dominated pattern" (19.3%) and "urethral indwelling catheterization dominated pattern" (9.6%). Multinomial logistic regression analysis found that the employment status, residential region, nursing need, payment method for catheterization products, hand function, time since spinal cord injury, urinary incontinence and concerns about social interaction affected by urination problems were significantly associated with latent classes. Only 19.3% of people used the intermittent catheterization as their main neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction management method. More attention needs to be paid to the promotion of the standardization process of intermittent catheterization in community-dwelling individuals with spinal cord injury. Fritillaria cirrhosa and its relatives have been utilized in traditional Chinese medicine for many years and are under priority protection in China. Despite their medicinal and protective value, research on their phylogeny, genetic diversity, and divergence remains limited. Here, we investigate the chloroplast genome variation architecture of 46 samples of F. cirrhosa and its relatives collected from various regions, encompassing the majority of wild populations across diverse geographical areas. The results indicate abundant variations in 46 accessions including 1659 single-nucleotide polymorphisms and 440 indels. Six variable markers ( psbJ , ndhD , ycf1 , ndhG , trnT-trnL , and rpl32-trnL ) were identified. Phylogenetic and network analysis, population structure analysis, and principal component analysis showed that the 46 accessions formed five clades with significant divergence, which were related to their geographical distribution. The regions spanning from the southern Hengduan Mountains to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau exhibited the highest levels of genetic diversity. F. cirrhosa and its relatives may have suffered a genetic bottleneck and have a relatively low genetic diversity level. Moreover, geographical barriers and discrete patches may have accelerated population divergence. The study offers novel perspectives on the phylogeny, genetic diversity, and population structure of F. cirrhosa and its relatives, information that can inform conservation and utilization strategies in the future.

Purpose: To assess the impact of bilateral vision status on vision-related quality of life (VR-QOL) in patients with Type 2 diabetes in a Chinese cohort., Methods: Patients with presenting visual acuity (PVA) and VR-QOL data from the Fushun Diabetic Retinopathy Cohort Study were included. Vision-related quality of life was assessed using the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-25. Monocular PVA (Snellen) was categorized into three levels for both the better-seeing eye and worse-seeing eye: 1) high PVA (H, > 6/18); 2) moderate PVA (M, 6/18-6/60); and 3) low PVA (L, < 6/60). Based on the monocular PVAs, six categories of bilateral vision status were defined (H-H, H-M, H-L, M-M, M-L, and L-L). The parameters of VR-QOL were analyzed between the groups., Results: A total of 1,717 patients were enrolled. For better-seeing eyes in the same PVA level, the Visual Function Questionnaire-25 composite score decreased significantly with declining PVA in the worse-seeing eye (H-M vs. H-L: 80.5 ± 17.9 vs. 73.6 ± 22.5, P = 0.01; M-M vs. M-L: 78.7 ± 19.6 vs. 69.1 ± 26.4, P = 0.01). Conversely, for worse-seeing eyes in the same PVA level, there was no significant difference in the Visual Function Questionnaire-25 composite score as PVA changed in the better-seeing eye (H-M vs. M-M, 80.5 ± 17.9 vs. 78.7 ± 19.6, P = 0.30; H-L vs. M-L: 73.6 ± 22.5 vs. 69.1 ± 26.4, P = 0.25)., Conclusion: The PVA of the worse-seeing eye in bilateral vision has a greater impact on VR-QOL in diabetic patients. Priority treatment may be considered for the worse-seeing eye for diabetic patients with different bilateral vision statuses, to better improve VR-QOL.

Background and Aims: Many studies of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (g-GISTs) following endoscopic resection (ER) have typically focused on tumor size, with most tumors at low risk of aggressiveness after risk stratification. There have been few systematic studies on the oncologic outcomes of intermediate- or high-risk g-GISTs after ER., Methods: From January 2014 to January 2020, we retrospectively collected patients considered at intermediate- or high-risk of g-GISTs according to the modified NIH consensus classification system. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS)., Results: Six hundred and seventy nine (679) consecutive patients were diagnosed with g-GISTs and treated by ER between January 2014 and January 2020 in three hospitals in Shanghai, China. 43 patients (20 males and 23 females) were confirmed at intermediate-or high-risk. The mean size of tumors was 2.23 ± 1.01 cm. The median follow-up period was 62.02 ± 15.34 months, with a range of 28 to 105 months. There were no recurrences or metastases, even among patients having R1 resections. The 5-year OS rate was 97.4% (42/43)., Conclusion: ER for intermediate- or high-risk gastric small GISTs is a feasible and safe method, which allows for a wait-and-see approach before determining the necessity for imatinib adjuvant or surgical treatment. Background: Influenza A virus infections can occur in multiple species. Eurasian avian-like swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses (EAS-H1N1) are predominant in swine and occasionally infect humans. A Eurasian avian-like swine influenza A (H1N1) virus was isolated from a boy who was suffering from fever; this strain was designated A/Shandong-binzhou/01/2021 (H1N1). The aims of this study were to investigate the characteristics of this virus and to draw attention to the need for surveillance of influenza virus infection in swine and humans., Methods: Throat-swab specimens were collected and subjected to real-time fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT‒PCR). Positive clinical specimens were inoculated onto Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells to isolate the virus, which was confirmed by a haemagglutination assay. Then, whole-genome sequencing was carried out using an Illumina MiSeq platform, and phylogenetic analysis was performed with MEGA X software., Results: RT‒PCR revealed that the throat-swab specimens were positive for EAS-H1N1, and the virus was subsequently successfully isolated from MDCK cells; this strain was named A/Shandong-binzhou/01/2021 (H1N1). Whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis revealed that A/Shandong-binzhou/01/2021 (H1N1) is a novel triple-reassortant EAS-H1N1 lineage that contains gene segments from EAS-H1N1 (HA and NA), triple-reassortant swine influenza H1N2 virus (NS) and A(H1N1) pdm09 viruses (PB2, PB1, PA, NP and MP)., Conclusions: The isolation and analysis of the A/Shandong-binzhou/01/2021 (H1N1) virus provide further evidence that EAS-H1N1 poses a threat to human health, and greater attention should be given to the surveillance of influenza virus infections in swine and humans., (© 2024. Objective: To assess pelvic floor muscle (PFM) strength and influencing factors among healthy women at different life stages., Design: Multicentre cross-sectional study., Setting: Fourteen hospitals in China., Population: A total of 5040 healthy women allocated to the following groups (with 1680 women per group): premenopausal nulliparous, premenopausal parous and postmenopausal., Methods: The PFM strength was evaluated by vaginal manometry. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine the influencing factors for low PFM strength., Main Outcome Measures: Maximum voluntary contraction pressure (MVCP)., Results: The median MVCP values were 36, 35 and 35 cmH 2 O in premenopausal nulliparous (aged 19-51 years), premenopausal parous (aged 22-61 years), and postmenopausal (aged 40-86 years) women, respectively. In the premenopausal nulliparous group, physical work (odds ratio, OR 2.05) was the risk factor for low PFM strength, which may be related to the chronic increased abdominal pressure caused by physical work. In the premenopausal parous group, the number of vaginal deliveries (OR 1.28) and diabetes (OR 2.70) were risk factors for low PFM strength, whereas sexual intercourse (<2 times per week vs. none, OR 0.55; ≥2 times per week vs. none, OR 0.56) and PFM exercise (OR 0.50) may have protective effects. In the postmenopausal group, the number of vaginal deliveries (OR 1.32) and family history of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) (OR 1.83) were risk factors for low PFM strength., Conclusions: Physical work, vaginal delivery, diabetes and a family history of POP are all risk factors for low PFM strength, whereas PFM exercises and sexual life can have a protective effect. Background: As the global trend of population aging intensifies, the health and well-being of the older population has gradually become a focus of attention for the global community. This study assessed the status of thriving in life among Chinese urban older adults and identified its relationship with attitude toward own aging and quality of life (QoL). It also tested whether attitude toward own aging moderates the association between thriving in life and Qol or between thriving in life and suicidal ideation., Methods: Primary data were collected through a cross-sectional survey among urban older adults from three provinces in China. They were invited to complete an anonymous survey using face-to-face interviews from December 2019 to January 2020. Data from 764 older adults were analyzed., Results: Approximately 44.39% of participants reported positive responses toward the four domains of thriving in life. Thriving in life and attitude toward own aging had a significant association with QoL. Thriving in life was a protective factor for suicidal ideation for older adults. Moreover, attitude toward own aging moderated the association between thriving in life and QoL and that between thriving in life and suicidal ideation., Conclusions: Chinese urban older adults were reportedly thriving in life, which contributed to increased QoL and reduced suicidal ideation. Notably, the study revealed that more positive attitudes towards own aging were associated with higher levels of thriving in life, better QoL, and reduced suicidal ideation. Targeted interventions for older adults should be devised to promote thriving in life and prevent negative attitudes of older people towards their own aging, further raising QoL and reducing suicidal ideation., (© 2024. Background: Unintended (unwanted) pregnancy is a sexual and reproductive health issue with psychosocial consequences for the individual, their family, and society. However, the relationship between social support and related mental health issues, like depression and the effects of childhood adversity, is poorly studied. This study aims to explore the connections between childhood adversity, perceived social support, and depressive symptoms in pre-abortion women (women who have decided to have an abortion) in a clinical setting, based on the common risk factor approach and social support theory., Methods: A total of 299 pre-abortion Chinese women 18-45 years were recruited in a hospital in Shantou, China. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were employed to examine the relative effects of childhood adversity and sources of social support on depressive symptoms, controlling for sociodemographic influences., Results: The results show that 37.2 percent of participants reported at least one adverse experience in childhood. More than half of the respondents were at risk for depression. Results of regression analysis showed that childhood adversities were negatively associated with depressive symptoms before sources of social support were entered into the model. However, when the sources of perceived social support were added, the effect of childhood adversity was not significant. Perceived social support explained the additional 15 percent variance in depressive symptoms. Additionally, being married (β = -.12, p < .05) and number of siblings (β = .13, p < .05) were significantly related to depressive symptoms., Discussion: Pre-abortion women are at risk of mental health problems. Peer and familial social supports can alleviate the influence of childhood adversity on depression among pre-abortion Chinese women. Neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs) have gained widespread usage as the most prevalent class of insecticides globally and are frequently detected in the environment, posing potential risks to biodiversity and human health. Wastewater discharged from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is a substantial source of environmental NEOs. However, research tracking NEO variations in different treatment units at the WWTPs after being treated by the treatment processes remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to comprehensively investigate the fate of nine parent NEOs (p-NEOs) and five metabolites in two municipal WWTPs using distinct treatment processes. The mean concentrations of ∑NEOs in influent (effluent) for the UNITANK, anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A 2 /O), and cyclic activated sludge system (CASS) processes were 189 ng/L (195 ng/L), 173 ng/L (177 ng/L), and 123 ng/L (138 ng/L), respectively. Dinotefuran, imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, acetamiprid, and clothianidin were the most abundant p-NEOs in the WWTPs. Conventional wastewater treatment processes were ineffective in removing NEOs from wastewater (-4.91% to -12.1%), particularly major p-NEOs. Moreover, the behavior of the NEOs in various treatment units was investigated. The results showed that biodegradation and sludge adsorption were the primary mechanisms responsible for eliminating NEO. An anoxic or anaerobic treatment unit can improve the removal efficiency of NEOs during biological treatment. However, the terminal treatment unit (chlorination disinfection tank) did not facilitate the removal of most of the NEOs. The estimated total amount of NEOs released from WWTPs to receiving waters in the Pearl River of South China totaled approximately 6.90-42.6 g/d. Preterm labor, a condition associated with various risk factors such as a history of prior preterm birth (PTB) and multiple pregnancies, has recently seen an increasing focus on its potential link with dyslipidemia. This study aims to investigate the relationship between dyslipidemia in expectant mothers and the risks of PTB. We studied 6963 mothers who gave birth at the International Peace Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine in 2020, among which, 437 women had PTB. We extracted clinical and lipid data from electronic records, using multivariable logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models to explore the link between lipid concentrations (by quartiles) in pregnancy stages and PTB risk. The PTB rate was 6.3%. Early pregnancy in the PTB group showed elevated ApoA, ApoB, CHOL, LDL, and TG levels compared to controls (all P < 0.05). Late pregnancy showed no notable lipid differences. Multivariable analysis revealed elevated ApoA, TG, higher age, BMI ≥ 28 kg/m 2 , hypertension, assisted reproductive technology and gestational diabetes as PTB risk factors (all P < 0.05). After adjustments, higher ApoA, ApoB, CHOL and TG levels correlated with increased PTB risk. Using the lowest quartile, the adjusted ORs for early pregnancy's highest quartile of ApoA, ApoB, CHOL and TG were 1.348, 1.442, 1.442 and 2.156, respectively. Our findings indicate that dyslipemia in early pregnancy, including elevated levels of ApoA, ApoB, CHOL and TG, are associated with PTB. Background: To explore trends of the association between body mass index (BMI) and age at menarche or spermarche and its urban-rural disparities from 1995 to 2019., Methods: A total of 912 753 children and adolescents - including 519 940 9-18 years old girls and 392 813 11-18 years old boys - were involved in six successive cross-sectional surveys conducted across 30 provinces in China from 1995 to 2019. Data on menarche and spermarche was collected using the status quo method, where same-gender physicians conducted face-to-face interviews to determine if children and adolescents had experienced their first menstrual cycle or ejaculation (yes/no). The median age at menarche or spermarche was estimated by probit analysis. Anthropometric measurements measured the height and weight of the study subjects. Children and adolescents were classified into thinness, normal range of weight, overweight, and obesity. t test was used to compare the differences in BMI between premenarchal and postmenarchal girls or prespermarcheal and postspermarcheal boys. Logistic regression was used to explore the associations between BMI/nutritional status and menarche or spermarche stratified by urban or rural residency status., Results: From 1995 to 2019, BMI in all age groups growth over time, and the values of BMI among children and adolescents under 15 who had menarche or spermarche were more significant than those without menarche or spermarche. In 2019, for girls, thinness was associated with delayed menarche (odds ratio (OR) = 0.26; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.24-0.28), while overweight (OR = 1.99; 95% CI = 1.85-2.14) and obesity (OR = 2.20; 95% CI = 1.92-2.53) was associated with advanced menarche. For boys, thinness was associated with delayed spermarche (OR = 0.71; 95% CI = 0.65-0.78), overweight was associated with advanced spermarche (OR = 1.08; 95% CI = 1.01-1.15) while obesity had no association with spermarche. The OR between BMI and menarche in 1995 was 1.35 (95% CI = 1.33-1.37), which decreased to 1.19 (95% CI = 1.18-1.20) by 2019. The OR between BMI and spermarche in 1995 was 1.10 (95% CI = 1.09-1.11), which decreased to 1.02 (95% CI = 1.02-1.03) by 2019. The trends by urban-rural stratification were consistent with the total sample., Conclusions: We have established a dose-response relationship between BMI and menarche in girls, whereas the association appears to be nonlinear in boys, and the associations were diminishing. Similar findings were observed in both urban and rural areas. Considering the dual adverse effects of obesity and early puberty on health, the results of this study suggest that sexual health education should be strengthened, especially among obese girls. In mid-November 2021, there were large areas of white rot disease on cultivated Saccharina japonica in Rongcheng City, China, and diseases were undetected on Sargassum horneri and Porphyra yezoensis. The disturbance direction of bacterial community in the phycosphere after disease outbreak and the relationship with seawater nutrients remain unclear. Here, in situ studies of bacterial community in the non-diseased and diseased areas (Shawo and Dongchu islands) and seawater nutrient levels were carried out. 16S rRNA sequencing showed that the bacterial richness of the studied seaweeds increased in the diseased area. Only in S. japonica, Algitalea outcompeted abundant primary bacteria with probiotic relationships to the host of the non-diseased area, and dominated in the diseased area (17.6% of the total abundance). Nitrogen and phosphorus levels in seawater were 57.8% and 19.6% higher in the non-diseased area than those in the diseased area, respectively, and were strongly correlated with the phycosphere bacteria at the family level of S. japonica. There was no difference in potential pathogenicity between the two areas, while positive signal communications decreased, and nitrogen cycle, chemoheterotrophy, and cellulolysis increased in the diseased area compared to the non-diseased area. Overall, white rot disease caused a structural disturbance in phycosphere bacterial community of S. japonica that related to seawater nutrient levels. Enriched degraders and altered bacterial community functions may exacerbate the disease. The self-management education for patients with hypertension has not been widely provided in rural areas of China. Our study aimed to examine the effect of health coaching intervention on controlling BP and improving self-management skills among rural resident of ≤6 month-history of hypertension. A total of 102 participants were enrolled in the RCT. The control group received usual health guidance and follow-up management; the experimental group received health coaching and follow up management. The primary outcomes were the difference in changes of BP and mean self-management scores. The secondary outcomes included waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), and medication literacy. Participants in the experimental group showed a significantly greater improvement with respect to systolic BP and diastolic BP respectively (133.85 ± 4.74 mmHg vs 127.96 ± 5.42 mmHg;80.94 ± 5.52 mmHg vs 77.37 ± 4.44 mmHg, P < 0.05) and BMI (24.66 ± 2.19 kg/m 2 vs 23.44 ± 2.05 kg/m 2 , P < 0.05) compared with the control group. A significant difference was also observed between the experimental and control groups in terms of self-management and medication literacy at both 3 and 6 months (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in changes of waist circumferences between the two groups (22.6% vs 38.8%). In conclusion, for patients with diagnosed with hypertension within the last 6 months, health coaching maybe is an effective approach to control blood pressure and improve medication literacy and self-management skills., (© 2024.
