This study collected 49 topsoil samples in agricultural soil from Panxi district (Sichuan, China), investigating the contamination status and probabilistic health risk of their heavy metal(loid)s (HMs). The average concentrations (mg/kg) of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were 18.18, 1.66, 294.05, 143.37, 70.18, 31.70 and 139.18, respectively. The pollution index (Pi) of the seven HMs were in the descending order of Cd > Cr > Cu > As > Zn > Ni > Pb, and the comprehensive Nemeiro risk index (PN) was 2.67, indicating that the study area was a moderate pollution by HMs. Meanwhile, Cd showed major contribution to the soil pollution among these HMs. The spatial distribution of HMs revealed that the southwestern part of the study area was the contamination hotspots. The hazard index (Hi) for children and adults were 1.621 and 0.346, respectively, and the total non-carcinogenic risk for children exceeded the threshold of 1. The carcinogenic risks associated with Cr (adults:, children:) and Ni (adults:) far exceeded the safe level of 1E-04; Monte Carlo simulations showed that humans locating in the study area suffered from a relatively significant carcinogenic risk; and the children were at higher risk than the adults. Among the three exposure pathways (ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact), the ingestion was the most important way for HMs to harm human health. Whether the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) was a continental arc or in a lithospheric extensional setting during the Carboniferous is the primary divergence among different tectonic models about the terminal evolutionary history of the southeastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). The Alxa block is the western segment of the northern NCC and contiguous to the southeastern CAOB, and therefore the tectonic setting of the Carboniferous magmatic intrusions in this block can shed light on this controversy. In this contribution, new zircon U–Pb ages, elemental geochemistry, and Sr-Nd isotopes are presented for thirteen Late Carboniferous (~318–300 Ma) magmatic intrusions in the southwestern Alxa block. Among them, seven calc-alkaline I-type granites and one aluminous A2-type granite were probably generated by the partial melting and crystallization differentiation of various crustal sources (perhaps including earlier orogenic materials) under different temperature conditions. Four quartz diorites and one hornblende gabbro may be the partial melts of subduction-modified basaltic lower crust sources and sub-continental lithospheric mantle sources, respectively. According to the integration of the new results and regional geological correlations, the Alxa block and the southeastern CAOB were most likely in a uniform tectonic regime during the Carboniferous. At that time, this region was characterized by the lithospheric extension-related magmatic rock associations, the increasing mantle inputs over time, the clockwise P–T paths of high temperature-low pressure metamorphic rocks, and the transgression sedimentary sequences. All these lines of evidence suggest an intra-continental lithospheric extensional setting rather than a continental arc setting for the southeastern CAOB during the Carboniferous. Accurate estimation of regional and global patterns of ecosystem respiration (ER) is crucial to improve the understanding of terrestrial carbon cycles and the predictive ability of the global carbon budget. However, large uncertainties still exist in regional and global ER estimation due to the drawbacks of modeling methods. Based on eddy covariance ER data from 132 sites in China from 2002 to 2020, we established Intelligent Random Forest (IRF) models that integrated ecological understanding with machine learning techniques to estimate ER. The results showed that the IRF models performed better than semiempirical models and machine learning algorithms. The observed data revealed that gross primary productivity (GPP), living plant biomass, and soil organic carbon (SOC) were of great importance in controlling the spatiotemporal variability of ER across China. An optimal model governed by annual GPP, living plant biomass, SOC, and air temperature (IRF‐04 model) matched 93% of the spatiotemporal variation in site‐level ER, and was adopted to evaluate the spatiotemporal pattern of ER in China. Using the optimal model, we obtained that the annual value of ER in China ranged from 5.05 to 5.84 Pg C yr−1 between 2000 and 2020, with an average value of 5.53 ± 0.22 Pg C yr−1. In this study, we suggest that future models should integrate process‐based and data‐driven approaches for understanding and evaluating regional and global carbon budgets. Plain Language Summary: With China already committing to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, an accurate assessment of land carbon sink and its flux rate in China is an increasingly important area in global change ecology. In this essay, a high‐efficiency and accurate simulation method was introduced in this field; This method is particularly useful in the assessment of carbon sink and its flux rate in China by combining with reliable observation flux data. Using this new method, a reliable and reasonable value of carbon flux (ecosystem respiration) was obtained. To investigate if deep-sedated colonoscopy affects adenoma detection in certain colorectal segment. Review of colonoscopy reports, electronic images and medical records of individuals underwent screening colonoscopy with or without propofol sedation between October 2020 and March 2021 from seven hospitals in China. A total of 4500 individuals were analyzed. There was no significant difference in ADR between deep-sedated colonoscopy and unsedated colonoscopy [45.4% vs. 46.3%, P > 0.05]. The APP of deep-sedated colonoscopy was lower than unsedated colonoscopy (1.76 ± 0.81 vs. 2.00 ± 1.30, P < 0.05). Both average number of adenomas and luminal distention score of splenic flexure and descending colon were lower in deep-sedated colonoscopy (P < 0.05), and average number of adenomas was positively correlated with an improved distension score in splenic flexure and descending colon (splenic flexure r = 0.031, P < 0.05; descending colon r = 0.312, P < 0.05). Linear regression model showed deep-sedated colonoscopy significantly affected luminal distention of splenic flexure and descending colon as well as average number of adenomas detected in splenic flexure (P < 0.05). Differences, arising from differences in gross primary production (GPP) model structures and driving forces, have fuelled arguments concerning interannual changes of GPP in China since 2000. To better investigate the interannual variability of GPP and its covariance with climate factors in China, this study adopted a multi‐model analysis based on three GPP models (i.e., Terrestrial Ecosystem Carbon flux model [TEC], Breathing Earth System Simulator model [BESS], and MOD17 GPP model). The results show that annual GPP in China increased by 0.021–0.057 Pg C year−1 from 2000 to 2015 attributable to atmospheric‐CO2 fertilization effects and favourable climate change, that is, increasing precipitation (Pr) and temperature (Ta). However, northern China and southern China had a large difference in the amplitude of these GPP changes; annual GPP increased by 0.017–0.039 Pg C year−1 in northern China but only 0.001–0.018 Pg C year−1 in southern China. Northern China and southern China occupy contrasting climate zones and this contrast produced different interannual variability of GPP through different mechanisms. Northern China has a dry climate with GPP changes sensitive to Pr. As a result, more Pr along with higher Ta in northern China produced the strong uptrend of GPP from 2000 to 2015. In contrast, southern China has a wet climate with its GPP sensitive to solar radiation and Ta. For the interval of 2000–2015, decreasing radiation plus drought exerted a negative influence on GPP in southern China. This study highlights the diverse mechanisms in which climate change affects GPP in dry and wet climate zones. Ecosystem light use efficiency (LUE) is a critical parameter in estimating CO2 uptake by vegetation from climatological and satellite data. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics and biophysical regulations of ecosystem‐level LUE are not well understood, resulting in large uncertainties in the estimation of gross primary productivity (GPP) using LUE‐based models. In this study, we used eddy covariance to explore spatiotemporal variations and controls of LUE in four contrasting forest ecosystems (savanna, tropical rainforest, subtropical evergreen forest, and subalpine coniferous forest). Based on 27 site years of data, we found that (1) the multiyear mean LUE was 0.063, 0.251, 0.247, and 0.140 g C· mol photon−1 in the four contrasting ecosystems, respectively; (2) the LUE in the wet season (May–October) was higher than that in the dry season in all studied ecosystems; (3) the leaf area index controlled GPP and LUE significantly and explained 74%, 29%, 54%, and 36% of the variation in GPP and 51%, 19%, 41%, and 54% of the variation in LUE in the four contrasting ecosystems, respectively; (4) path analysis revealed the critical roles of GPP and vapor pressure deficit in controlling LUE in these four forest ecosystems; and (5) under warming scenarios, LUE may decrease in savanna but increase in the other three ecosystems, while decreasing precipitation (P) may reduce LUE in the ecosystems studied. This study improves our understanding of the influence of biophysical factors on LUE and demonstrates how LUE changes with variations in temperature, soil moisture, and leaf area index, thereby improving estimations of large‐scale carbon exchange/cycling. Background: Phase II-III trials in patients with untreated and previously treated locally advanced or non-small cell lung cancer ( NSCLC) suggested that Endostar was able to enhance the effect of platinum-based chemotherapy ( NP regimen) with tolerable adverse effects. Methods Four hundred and eighty six patients were randomized into two arms: study arm A: NP plus Endostar (n = 322; vinorelbine, cisplatin, Endostar), and study arm B: NP plus placebo (n = 164; vinorelbine, cisplatin, 0.9% sodium chloride). Patients were treated every third week for two to six cycles. Results: Overall response rates were 35.4% in arm A and 19.5% in arm B (P = 0.0003). The median time to progression was 6.3 months for arm A and 3.6 months for B, respectively (P < 0.001). The clinical benefit rates were 73.3% in arm A and 64.0% in arm B (P = 0.035). Grade 3/4 neutropenia, anemia, and nausea/vomiting were 28.5%, 3.4%, and 8.0%, respectively, in Arm A compared with 28.2%, 3.0%, and 6.6%, respectively, in Arm B (P > 0.05). There were two treatment related deaths in arm A and one in arm B (P > 0.05). The median overall survival was longer in arm A than in arm B (P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Long-term follow-up revealed that the addition of Endostar to an NP regimen can result in a significant clinical and survival benefit in advanced NSCLC patients, compared with NP alone. Understanding the dynamics and underlying mechanism of carbon exchange between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere is one of the key issues in global change research. In this study, we quantified the carbon fluxes in different terrestrial ecosystems in China, and analyzed their spatial variation and environmental drivers based on the long-term observation data of China FLUX sites and the published data from other flux sites in China. The results indicate that gross ecosystem productivity ( GEP), ecosystem respiration ( ER), and net ecosystem productivity ( NEP) of terrestrial ecosystems in China showed a significantly latitudinal pattern, declining linearly with the increase of latitude. However, GEP, ER, and NEP did not present a clear longitudinal pattern. The carbon sink functional areas of terrestrial ecosystems in China were mainly located in the subtropical and temperate forests, coastal wetlands in eastern China, the temperate meadow steppe in the northeast China, and the alpine meadow in eastern edge of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The forest ecosystems had stronger carbon sink than grassland ecosystems. The spatial patterns of GEP and ER in China were mainly determined by mean annual precipitation ( MAP) and mean annual temperature ( MAT), whereas the spatial variation in NEP was largely explained by MAT. The combined effects of MAT and MAP explained 79%, 62%, and 66% of the spatial variations in GEP, ER, and NEP, respectively. The GEP, ER, and NEP in different ecosystems in China exhibited 'positive coupling correlation' in their spatial patterns. Both ER and NEP were significantly correlated with GEP, with 68% of the per-unit GEP contributed to ER and 29% to NEP. While exercise has been shown to reduce the negative effects of substance withdrawal symptoms, no research has investigated if Tai Chi, a traditional Chinese exercise, has similar effects. Here, we observed the physiological effects of Tai Chi on protracted abstinence syndrome (PAS) in female heroin addicts by comprehensively inspecting their immune system function, complete blood count, hepatic function and renal function. To determine the psychological effects, we used the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD) and the rating scale of heroin withdrawal symptoms. We recruited 70 heroin-addicted young women beginning to undergo withdrawal and randomly assigned them into two groups: one group received one-hour Tai Chi exercise every two days (Tai Chi group, n = 36) and the other group did not (control group, n = 34). Thirty-three patients finished this six-month trial. Numerous significant physiological differences were observed between all heroin-addicted subjects (n = 70) and age-matched healthy individuals (n = 18), suggesting a deleterious effect of drug addiction. There were improvements for certain physical parameters between the Tai Chi group (n = 17) and the control group (n = 16), although the differences were not statistically significant. We observed a small significant difference in psychological effects near the 60-day mark between the two groups. Taken together, our results suggest that Tai Chi might have a positive effect on PAS, which future studies can confirm by using an expanded sample size, longer trial time, and more sensitive and specific indicators of psychological and physiological health. The effects of canopy development, solar angle, and weather conditions on temporal variation in photosynthetic photon flux density(PPFD) at three heights within a tropical rain forest canopy in Xishuangbanna, China, were examined. PPFD was measured every second and stored as 10-min averages from 1 December 2002 to 30 November 2003. PPFD variability was examined at three different temporal scales. Specific days in March, September, and December with clear and overcast sky conditions were selected to separate the effects of leaf area index (LAI) and solar angle on diurnal variability. On both clear and overcast days, mean daily average PPFD was significantly different between March and September at all heights, except 10 m on clear days, suggesting that LAI directly influences PPFD. In contrast, the differences in daily average PPFD among three heights between September and December were likely due to variation in solar angle. In addition, daily average PPFD at all locations were significantly lower under overcast than clear sky conditions in March, September and December. Over the year-long study, the mean daily total PPFD at 21 m, 10 m and 4 m was 2.8, 2.7 and 0.7 mol/(m2 · d), which accounted for 9.7%, 9.4% and 2.4% of the daily PPFD above the canopy, respectively. Significant differences in mean daily total PPFD occurred at the same heights among different seasons, and diurnal, day-to-day and seasonal PPFD varied at different heights within the canopy. Seed oil has long been recognized as an important source of food, industry and biodiesel. In biological aspect, seed oil fatty acid composition (FAC) affects lipid fluidity and cellular metabolism, depending on temperature. Hence, the variation of FAC in seeds may reflect adaptive strategies for seed survival and seedling establishment under contrasting climate conditions. In this study, we investigated the relative effects of phylogeny and climate on seed oil FAC, testing the hypothesis that the degree of fatty acid unsaturation increases in colder climates. A large seed oil FAC dataset representing 747 species from 207 sites across China was compiled and a general linear model was used to partition total variance in FAC into taxonomic ranks (family, genus and species) and environmental components. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the relative effects of mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP). Phylogenetically independent contrast (PIC) analysis was used to test the evolutionary association of FAC with climate at the family level. The results showed that seed oil FAC varied considerably across plant species, with phylogeny explaining a greater proportion of variance than environment; however, FAC showed obvious large-scale spatial patterns. Total unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) content increased with increasing latitude. The degree of fatty acid unsaturation, as indicated by the ratio of UFA to saturated fatty acids and iodine value, was negatively correlated with MAT and to a lesser extent with MAP. The PIC results indicated that at the family level, nearly all significant phenotypic correlations of FAC with spatial and climatic variables were evolutionarily convergent. These results indicate that despite strong phylogenetic constraints on FAC, fatty acid unsaturation in seed oil appears to evolve as an adaptive strategy in colder climates. The annual gross primary productivity (AGPP) forms the foundation for terrestrial carbon sink. AGPP trends stem from the combined impacts of environmental factors and ecosystem responses to those factors. These responses include model structure modifications altering both the structural properties (represented by leaf area index) and the functional properties (represented by per leaf AGPP). Understanding the contributions of ecosystem responses to AGPP trends is crucial for accurately assessing spatiotemporal variations in AGPP, which aids in effective carbon management. Based on eddy covariance measurements of AGPP in China, we generated AGPP during 2000–2020 by constructing yearly AGPP mapping schemes from site measurements and analyzed AGPP trends. The roles of ecosystem responses and their pathways were further elucidated by employing analysis of variance. Results showed that the total AGPP in China was 7.39 ± 0.62 PgC yr−1, with an increasing trend of 0.095 PgC yr−2. This increase primarily sourced from the total AGPP in Subtropical Evergreen Needleleaf Forest. AGPP trends spatially decreased from east to west, with most regions showing positive values. Structural and functional properties contributed similarly to AGPP trends, with varying regional contributions. The structural properties played a dominant role in north regions while the functional properties were more important in south and west regions. Ecosystem responses similarly determined the trends of ecosystem properties, which decreased from west to east. Ecosystem responses thus dominated AGPP trends through the structural properties in north regions but through the functional properties in south and west regions. Therefore, Chinese AGPP exhibited a spatially varied increasing trend during 2000–2020. Ecosystem responses dominated AGPP trends through divergent properties across regions. Our results highlight the significanc of ecosystem responses in AGPP trends and their divergent pathways across regions. Analyzing the approaches that climatic factors affect the spatial variation of annual gross primary productivity (GPP yr ) would improve our understanding on its spatial pattern. Based on network eddy covariance measurements and published data in literature, we separated GPP yr into radiation use efficiency (RUE) and annual absorbed photosynthesis active radiation (APAR yr ), where APAR yr can be regarded as the product of the fraction of absorbed annual photosynthesis active radiation (FPAR yr ) and annual PAR (PAR yr ). Given that PAR yr affects the spatial variation of GPP yr directly through itself, we investigated factors affecting the spatial variations of RUE and FPAR yr , to reveal how climatic factors affect the spatial variation of GPP yr . Results suggest that the spatial variation of RUE was directly affected by annual mean air temperature (MAT) and annual mean CO 2 mass concentration ( ρ cyr ). The increasing MAT and ρ cyr directly enhanced RUE. The increasing annual precipitation (MAP) directly prompted FPAR yr . Therefore, MAT and ρ cyr affected the spatial variation of GPP yr through altering RUE while the effect of MAP was achieved through altering FPAR yr . Accurate quantifying the magnitudes and distributions of carbon budgets is helpful for strategies in mitigating global climate change. Based on spatial patterns of carbon fluxes (gross ecosystem productivity (GEP), ecosystem respiration (ER) and net ecosystem productivity (NEP)) and their drivers, we constructed geographical statistical assessment schemes and quantified the magnitudes of carbon fluxes in China. The optimal assessment scheme was then validated with observed eddy covariance data to analyze the spatial distributions of carbon fluxes. Using climate-based geographical statistical assessment schemes, our estimates of GEP, ER and NEP in China during 2000s were 7.51±0.51, 5.82±0.16 and 1.91±0.15PgCyr−1, corresponding to 4.29%–6.80%, 5.65%–6.06% and 9.10%–12.73% of global annual carbon fluxes, respectively. The spatial distributions of GEP, ER and NEP, generated from the optimal scheme, were similar, following a southeast–northwest decreasing gradient. The maximum values for GEP, ER and NEP were 1790, 1300 and 490gCm−2 yr−1, respectively, which occurred in Central subtropics and Southern subtropics. Climate-based geographical statistical assessment schemes provided an independent dataset for the regional carbon budget assessment, which can be deemed as the potential carbon fluxes. Meanwhile, most areas in China were potential carbon sink especially Eastern China and the largest potential carbon sink appeared in Central subtropics and Southern subtropics. Abstract: As a weather element, clouds can affect CO2 exchange between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere by altering environmental conditions, such as solar radiation received on the ground surface, temperature, and moisture. Based on the flux data measured at five typical ecosystems of China during mid-growing season (June–August) from 2003 to 2006, we analyzed the responses of net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide (NEE), light use efficiency (LUE, defined as Gross ecosystem photosynthesis (GEP)/Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR)), and water use efficiency (WUE, defined as GEP/Evapotranspiration (ET)) to the changes in cloudiness. The five ecological sites included Changbaishan temperate mixed forest (CBS), Dinghushan subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest (DHS), Xishuangbanna tropical rainforest (XSBN), Inner Mongolia semi-arid Leymus chinensis steppe (NMG), and Haibei alpine frigid Potentilla fruticosa shrub (HB). Our analyses show that cloudy sky conditions with cloud index (k t) values between 0.4 and 0.6 increased NEE, LUE, and WUE of the ecosystems at CBS, DHS, NMG and HB from June to August. The LUE of tropical rainforest at XSBN was higher under cloudy than under clear sky conditions, but NEE and WUE did not decrease significantly under clear sky conditions from June to August. The increase in GEP with increasing diffuse radiation received by ecosystems under cloudy skies was the main reason that caused the increases in LUE and net carbon uptake in forest ecosystem at CBS, DHS, and alpine shrub ecosystem at HB, compared with clear skies. Moreover, for the ecosystem at CBS, DHS, and HB, when sky condition became from clear to cloudy, GEP increased and ET decreased with decreasing VPD, leading to the increase in WUE and NEE under cloudy sky conditions. The decrease in R e with decreasing temperature and increase in GEP with decreasing VPD under cloudy skies led to the increase in LUE, WUE, and net carbon uptake of semi-arid steppe at NMG, compared to clear skies. These different responses among the five ecosystems are attributable to the differences in canopy characteristics and water conditions. From June to August, the peaks of the k t frequency distribution in temperate ecosystems (e.g., CBS, NMG, and HB) were larger than 0.5, but they were smaller than 0.4 in subtropical/tropical forest ecosystems (e.g., DHS and XSBN). These results suggest that the pattern of cloudiness during the years from 2003 to 2006 in the five ecosystems was not the best condition for their net carbon uptake. Limited evidence is known about whether long-term exposures to air borne particulate matters of 2.5 μm or less (PM 2.5) impact human hematologic index for women preparing for pregnancy. No study assessed the effect of PM 1 , which is small enough to reach the blood circulation. To evaluate whether exposure to PM 1 and PM 2.5 is associated with blood cell count of woman preparing for pregnancy. Based on the baseline data of a national birth cohort in China, we analysed the white blood cell (WBC), red blood cells (RBC) and thrombocyte counts of 1,203,565 women who are aged 18–45 years, being Han ethnicity, had no chronic disease and preparing for pregnancy. We matched their home addresses and examination date with daily concentrations of PM 1 and PM 2.5 which were estimated by a machine learning method with remote sensing, meteorological and land use information. Generalized additive mixed model to examine the associations between exposure to one-year average exposure to PMs prior to the health examination and the blood cells counts, after adjustment for potential individual variables. A 10 μg/m3 PM 1 increment was associated with −1.49% (95%CI: 1.56%, −1.42%) difference in WBC count; with 0.33% (95%CI: 0.30%, 0.36%) difference of RBC count; and with 1.08% (95%CI: 1.01%, 1.15%) difference of thrombocyte count. For PM 2.5 , the corresponding difference was −0.47% (95%CI: 0.54%, −0.39%) for WBC; was 0.06% (95%CI: 0.03%, 0.09%) for RBC; and was 1.10% (95%CI: 1.02%, 1.18%) for thrombocyte. Women working as workers, being overweight and with tobacco smoking exposure had higher associations between PMs and hematologic index than their counterparts (p < 0.05 for interaction test). Long-term exposure to PMs were associated with decrement in WBC, as well as increment in RBC and thrombocytes among Han Chinese women preparing for pregnancy. Exposure to relatively low or high temperatures during the entire pregnancy significantly increase the risk of preterm birth, with hazard ratios (HRs) [95% confidence intervals (CIs)] of 1.03 (95%CI: 1.02, 1.04) for relatively low (9.1 ℃, the 5th percentile) temperature and 1.55 (95%CI: 1.48, 1.61) for relatively high (23.0 ℃, the 95th percentile) temperature in comparison with the thresholds (12.0 ℃) Little is known about the effect of ambient temperature on preterm birth, especially for the trimester-specific effects. To evaluate whether exposure to relatively low or high temperature during pregnancy is associated with increasing risk of preterm birth or not. We analysed the data of a birth cohort with 1,281,859 singleton pregnancies during 2013–2014 and matched the home address of each pregnant women to the model based daily meteorological and air pollution data. Then we used the Cox proportional hazard regression models with random effect to estimate the non-linear associations between exposure to relatively low or high temperature at each trimester of pregnancy and the risk of preterm birth, after controlling for air pollution and individual-level covariates. The overall preterm birth rate was 8.1% (104,493 preterm births). Exposure to relatively low or high temperatures during the entire pregnancy significantly increase the risk of preterm birth, with hazard ratios (HRs) [95% confidence intervals (CIs)] of 1.03 (95%CI: 1.02, 1.04) for relatively low (9.1 ℃, the 5th percentile) temperature and 1.55 (95%CI: 1.48, 1.61) for relatively high (23.0 ℃, the 95th percentile) temperature in comparison with the thresholds (12.0 ℃). No evidence exists concerning the effect of airborne particulate matter of 1 μm or less (PM 1) on blood pressure of young adults planning for pregnancy. We collected health examination information of about 1.2 million couples (aged 18–45 years) from a national birth cohort in China from Jan 1, 2013 to Oct 1, 2014 and matched their home address to daily PM 1 and PM 2.5 concentrations, which were predicted by remote sensing information. Generalized additive mixed models were used to analyze associations between long-term exposure to PM and blood pressure, after controlling for individual factors. A 10 μg/m3 increase in PM 1 was associated with increased systolic blood pressure (SBP) for 0.26 (95%CI: 0.24, 0.29) mmHg in females and 0.29 (95%CI: 0.26, 0.31) mmHg in males, respectively. PM 1 was also associated with increased DBP for 0.22 (95%CI: 0.20, 0.23) mmHg in females and 0.17 (95%CI: 0.15, 0.19) mmHg in males, respectively. Similar effects on blood pressure were found for PM 2.5 , meanwhile, the effect of PM 2.5 on SBP increased with the scale of PM 1 included in PM 2.5 (p for interaction term <0.01). In order to predict the effects of climate change on the global carbon cycle, it is crucial to understand the environmental factors that affect soil carbon storage in grasslands. In the present study, we attempted to explain the relationships between the distribution of soil carbon storage with climate, soil types, soil properties and topographical factors across different types of grasslands with different grazing regimes. We measured soil organic carbon in 92 locations at different soil depth increments, from 0 to 100 cm in southwestern China. Among soil types, brown earth soils (Luvisols) had the highest carbon storage with 19.5 ± 2.5 kg m−2, while chernozem soils had the lowest with 6.8 ± 1.2 kg m−2. Mean annual temperature and precipitation, exerted a significant, but, contrasting effects on soil carbon storage. Soil carbon storage increased as mean annual temperature decreased and as mean annual precipitation increased. Across different grassland types, the mean carbon storage for the top 100 cm varied from 7.6 ± 1.3 kg m−2 for temperate desert to 17.3 ± 2.9 kg m−2 for alpine meadow. Grazing/cutting regimes significantly affected soil carbon storage with lowest value (7.9 ± 1.5 kg m−2) recorded for cutting grass, while seasonal (11.4 ± 1.3 kg m−2) and year-long (12.2 ± 1.9 kg m−2) grazing increased carbon storage. The highest carbon storage was found in the completely ungrazed areas (16.7 ± 2.9 kg m−2). Climatic factors, along with soil types and topographical factors, controlled soil carbon density along a soil depth in grasslands. Environmental factors alone explained about 60% of the total variation in soil carbon storage. The actual depth-wise distribution of soil carbon contents was significantly influenced by the grazing intensity and topographical factors. Background: Although birth defects are of great concern globally, the latest national prevalence has not yet been quantified in China. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the perinatal prevalence of birth defects in the Mainland of China between 2000 and 2021., Methods: We performed a systematic literature search of six databases for relevant articles published between January 1, 2000, and March 1, 2023. We included published studies that reported data on the perinatal prevalence of birth defects in the Mainland of China. The DerSimonian and Laird random-effects models were used to estimate the pooled prevalence and its 95% confidence interval (CI). We also conducted subgroup analyses and univariable meta-regressions to explore differences in prevalence by time period, geographic region, and other characteristics., Results: We included 254 studies reporting the perinatal prevalence of birth defects and 86 studies reporting only the prevalence of specific types of birth defects. Based on 254 studies covering 74,307,037 perinatal births and 985,115 cases with birth defects, the pooled perinatal prevalence of birth defects was 122.54 (95% CI 116.20-128.89) per 10,000 perinatal births in the Mainland of China during 2000-2021. Overall, the perinatal prevalence of birth defects increased from 95.60 (86.51-104.69) per 10,000 in 2000-2004 to 208.94 (175.67-242.22) per 10,000 in 2020-2021. There were also significant disparities among different geographical regions. Congenital heart defects (33.35 per 10,000), clefts of the lip and/or palate (13.52 per 10,000), polydactyly (12.82 per 10,000), neural tube defects (12.82 per 10,000), and inborn errors of metabolism (11.41 per 10,000) were the five most common types of birth defects. The perinatal prevalence among males was significantly higher than that among females (β = 2.44 × 10 -3 , P = 0.003); a higher perinatal prevalence of birth defects was observed among perinatal births whose mothers were ≥ 35 years (β = 4.34 × 10 -3 , P < 0.001)., Conclusion: Comprehensive and sustained efforts are needed to strengthen surveillance and detection of birth defects, improve prenatal and postnatal healthcare, and promote rehabilitation, especially in underdeveloped areas., (© 2024. Background: Limited studies have examined the impact of airborne particulate matter of 2.5 μm or less (PM 2.5 ) on renal function. No study has examined the effect of PM 1 , which is small enough to reach the blood circulation. We examined whether exposure to PM 1 or PM 2.5 affected renal function of young Han Chinese., Method: We included 2,546,047 young adults who were aged 18 to 45 years, being Han ethnicity and had no chronic disease from a Chinese national birth cohort. Serum creatinine (Scr) of each participant was measured during the baseline examination. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were calculated for each participant using the latest Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation. One-year average exposure to PM 1 and PM 2.5 prior to the health examination for each participant were estimated using machine learning models with satellite remote sensing information. Generalized additive mixed models were used to estimate associations between PM 1 or PM 2.5 and renal function after adjusting for detailed individual variables., Results: A 10 μg/m 3 increment in PM 1 exposure was associated with -0.95% (95%CI: -1.04%, -0.87%) difference of eGFR in females and -0.37% (95%CI: -0.44%, -0.31%) in males. For PM 2.5 , the corresponding difference of eGFR was -0.99% (95%CI: -1.05%, -0.93%) in females and -0.48% (95%CI: -0.53%, -0.43%) in males, respectively. Associations between eGFR and PM were higher in females compared to males (p < 0.05 for interaction test). Association with PM 1 were weaker than that with other fractions included in PM 2.5 . Participants who worked as farmers, were of normal weight, were not exposed to tobacco smoking, did not drink alcohol, had higher associations between eGFR and PM than their counterparts (p < 0.05 for interaction test)., Conclusion: Exposure to PM 1 and PM 2.5 was associated with reduced renal function among Han Chinese at reproductive age., (Copyright © 2020 The Authors. Background: Potential modification of the association between maternal particulate matter (PM) exposure and preterm delivery (PTD) by folic acid (FA) supplementation has not been studied., Objective: We examined whether FA supplementation could reduce the risk of PTD associated with maternal exposure to PM in ambient air during pregnancy., Method: In a cohort study covering 30 of the 31 provinces of mainland China in 2014, 1,229,556 primiparas of Han ethnicity were followed until labor. We collected information on their FA supplementation and pregnancy outcomes and estimated each participant's exposure to PM with diameters of ≤ 10 μ m ( PM 10 ), 2.5 μ m ( PM 2.5 ), and 1 μ m ( PM 1 ) using satellite remote-sensing based models. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to examine interactions between FA supplementation and PM exposures, after controlling for individual characteristics., Results: Participants who initiated FA ≥ 3  months prior to pregnancy (38.1%) had a 23% [hazard ratio ( HR ) = 0.77 (95% CI: 0.76, 0.78)] lower risk of PTD than women who did not use preconception FA. Participants with PM concentrations in the highest quartile had a higher risk of PTD [ HR = 1.29 (95% CI: 1.26, 1.32) for PM 1 , 1.52 (95% CI: 1.46, 1.58) for PM 2.5 , and 1.22 (95% CI: 1.17, 1.27) for PM 10 ] than those with exposures in the lowest PM quartiles. Estimated associations with a 10 - μ g / m 3 increase in PM 1 and PM 2.5 were significantly lower among women who initiated FA ≥ 3  months prior to pregnancy [ HR = 1.09 (95% CI: 1.08, 1.10) for both exposures] than among women who did not use preconception FA [ HR = 1.12 (95% CI: 1.11, 1.13) for both exposures; p interaction < 0.001 ]. The corresponding association was also significantly lower for a 10 - μ g / m 3 increase in PM 10 [ HR = 1.03 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.03) for FA ≥ 3  months before pregnancy vs. 1.04 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.04) for no preconception FA; p interaction < 0.001 ]., Conclusion: Our findings require confirmation in other populations, but they suggest that initiating FA supplementation ≥ 3  months prior to pregnancy may lessen the risk of PTD associated with PM exposure during pregnancy among primiparas of Han ethnicity. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP6386.

Objectives: This study investigated factors associated with (i) the likelihood of receiving a gene aberration test and (ii) the choice of treatment between chemotherapy and targeted therapy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in China., Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed data previously extracted from the medical charts of patients with unresectable Stage IIIB/IV nonsquamous NSCLC discharged from one of 12 tertiary hospitals in China between August 2015 and March 2016. Logistic regressions were applied to investigate factors associated with receiving a gene aberration test and the treatment decision., Results: Data from 932 patients were analyzed. Patients were less likely to have a gene aberration test if they had a histologic subtype other than adenocarcinoma or a hospital waiting time for test results of >5 days. Patients were more likely to receive tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment than chemotherapy if they had a positive result for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)/anaplastic lymphoma kinase gene aberration testing. EGFR positive patients were more likely to receive TKI treatment than chemotherapy if they did not have insurance for TKI or pemetrexed treatment, and more likely to receive chemotherapy than TKI treatment if they had a waiting time for test results of >5 days. EGFR wild-type/unknown patients receiving chemotherapy were more likely to receive pemetrexed if they attended a hospital in a developed area or had insurance for pemetrexed., Conclusion: In this real-world setting in China, the choice of first-line treatment for advanced NSCLC was appropriately guided by gene aberration testing for most patients. Preclinical studies have shown synergism between epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors and antifolates in solid tumors. This study is to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of erlotinib plus capecitabine as first-line treatment in older Chinese patients (≥ 65 years) with lung adenocarcinoma. This is an open-label, single arm, multicenter phase II clinical trial. Sixty- two patients with previously untreated stage IIIB/IV adenocarcinoma and age 65 years or above were enrolled at four tertiary teaching hospitals and 2 provincial hospitals in China; 58 patients fulfilled the study requirements. Erlotinib (150 mg/day) and capecitabine (1000 mg/m2 twice daily on days 1-14) were administered during every 21-day cycle. The primary endpoint was the non-progression rate at 12 weeks. EGFR and K-ras mutation rates were determined using PCR. Tumor expression of different biomarkers was assessed using immunohistochemistry. In a cohort of 58 patients, 34 patients had no disease progression at 12 weeks following treatment. The objective response rate was 29.3%, and the disease control rate was 75.9%. The objective response rate was significantly higher in patients with EGFR mutations than in those with wild-type EGFR. Patients with thymidine phosphorylase-negative tumors had significantly longer overall survival after one year than patients with thymidine phosphorylase-positive tumors. Forty-four patients had at least one primary adverse events (AEs), including skin rash (n = 30), grade 3 AEs (n = 17), and grade 4 AEs (n = 7). This is the first phase II clinical trial to assess erlotinib plus capecitabine combination therapy as first-line treatment in older patients with lung adenocarcinoma. Erlotinib/capecitabine chemotherapy was significantly better in patients with EGFR mutations and in those with thymidine phosphorylase-negative tumors. The use of fluorouracil derivatives for the treatment of lung adenocarcinoma warrants further study.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1) genetic polymorphisms and the clinical efficacy of gemcitabine-based chemotherapy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)., Methods: A total of 135 chemonaive patients with unresectable advanced NSCLC were treated with gemcitabine/platinum regimens. The polymorphisms of MTHFR C677T, ERCC1 C8092A, and ERCC1 C118T were genotyped using the TaqMan methods., Results: The overall response rate was 28.9%. Patients with MTHFR CC genotype had a higher rate of objective response than patients with variant genotype (TT or CT) (41.2% versus 19.1%, P=0.01). Median time to progression (TTP) of patients with MTHFR CC genotype was longer than that of patients with variant genotype (7.6 months versus 5.0 months, P=0.003). No significant associations were obtained between ERCC1 C118T and C8092A polymorphisms and both response and survival., Conclusions: Our data suggest the value of MTHFR C677T polymorphism as a possible predictive marker of response and TTP in advanced NSCLC patients treated with gemcitabine/platinum.

A two-year study (2009 ~ 2010) was carried out to investigate the dynamics of different carbon (C) forms, and the role of stream export in the C balance of a 23.4-ha headwater catchment in a tropical seasonal rainforest at Xishuangbanna (XSBN), southwest China. The seasonal volumetric weighted mean (VWM) concentrations of total inorganic C (TIC) and dissolved inorganic C (DIC) were higher, and particulate inorganic C (PIC) and organic C (POC) were lower, in the dry season than the rainy season, while the VWM concentrations of total organic C (TOC) and dissolved organic C (DOC) were similar between seasons. With increased monthly stream discharge and stream water temperature (SWT), only TIC and DIC concentrations decreased significantly. The most important C form in stream export was DIC, accounting for 51.8% of the total C (TC) export; DOC, POC, and PIC accounted for 21.8%, 14.9%, and 11.5% of the TC export, respectively. Dynamics of C flux were closely related to stream discharge, with the greatest export during the rainy season. C export in the headwater stream was 47.1 kg C ha(-1) yr(-1), about 2.85% of the annual net ecosystem exchange. This finding indicates that stream export represented a minor contribution to the C balance in this tropical seasonal rainforest.

Based on the total radiation and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) observations with net radiometer (CNR1) and quantum sensor (Li-190SB) in 4 ChinaFLUX forest sites (Changbaishan, Qianyanzhou, Dinghushan, and Xishuangbanna) in 2003-2008, this paper analyzed the uncertainties and the radiometers performance changes in long-term and continuous field observation. The results showed that the 98% accuracy of the total radiation measured with CNR1 (Q(cNR1)) could satisfy the technical criterion for the sites except Xishuangbanna where the Q(CNR1) was averagely about 7% lower than Q(CM11), the radiation measured with high accuracy pyranometer CM11. For most sites, though the temperature had definite effects on the performance of CNR1, the effects were still within the allowable range of the accuracy of the instrument. Besides temperature, the seasonal fog often occurred in tropical rain forests in Xishuangbanna also had effects on the performance of CNR1. Based on the long-term variations of PAR, especially its ratio to total radiation in the 4 sites, it was found that quantum sensor (Li-190SB) had obvious performance attenuation, with the mean annual attenuation rate being about 4%. To correct the observation error caused by Li-190SB, an attempt was made to give a post-correction of the PAR observations, which could basically eliminate the quantum sensor's performance attenuation due to long-term field measurement.

By using eddy covariance technique, this paper quantitatively analyzed the photosynthetic characteristics of tropical seasonal rainforest ecosystem and related environmental controlling factors in Xishuangbanna in 2003-2006. In the study period, less interannual difference was observed in the net photosynthesis of the ecosystem, with the maximum photosynthesis rate (P(eco,opt)), respiration at daytime (R(eco,d)), and apparent quantum yield (alpha) averaged by 0.813 mg x m(-2) x s(-1), 0.238 mg x m(-2) x s(-1), and 0.0023 mg x micromol(-1), respectively. As affected by the interaction of air temperature (Ta) and vapor pressure deficit (VPD), the photosynthetic characteristics had some seasonal differences. In rainy season, the ecosystem had the strongest photosynthetic capacity because of the higher precipitation and warmer air temperature; in foggy and cool season, fog drip played an important role in the water relations of plants, and thereby, the ecosystem photosynthetic capacity was still higher; in dry and hot season, due to the limited precipitation and high temperature, the Ta and VPD increased, inducing a decrease of ecosystem alpha and P(eco,opt). The net CO2 exchange of the ecosystem strongly depended on the Ta above 20 degrees C and the VPD above 1 kPa.

By the methods of chamber-based and eddy covariance measurements, the CO2 exchange of dominant tree species Pometia tomentosa and Gironniera subaequalis at leaf and canopy levels in the tropical seasonal rain forest of Xishuangbanna was measured in different seasons of 2004. The results showed that for the two tree species, the maximum net photosynthesis (P(max A)) of canopy based on chamber-based measurement ranked in the order of rainy season (RS) > end of rainy season (ERS) > foggy-cool season (FS) > dry-hot season (DS), and the dark respiration rate (Rd) of leaf was RS > ERS > DS > FS. The P(max B) based on eddy covariance measurement was in the same order as that based on chamber-based measurement, while the canopy respiration rate (Re) was RS > DS > FS > ERS. The maximum net photosynthetic rate of canopy in different seasons measured by the two methods had a comparatively small difference, ranging from 0.9 to 2.0 micromol m(-2) s(-1).

Their structures were identified on the basis of physical and spectral data., Results: Eleven compounds were isolated and identified as: (1) ferlalic acid; (2) O-hydroxybenzoic acid; (3) protocatechualdehyde; (4) beta-3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-lactic acid; (5) ursolic acid; (6) 6,7-dimethoxy-5,4'-dihydroxy-flavonol-3-O-glucoside; (7) carnosol; (8) tanshinone II(A); (9) tanshinone I; (10) 5,6-dehydrosugiol; (11) crypotanshinone.
