Aims. We aimed to investigate nursing students' spiritual care competence, perceived professional benefit, and retention intention and to analyze the relationship among these variables. Background. Nurse shortages are a global issue, and intern nursing students' willingness to remain in the nursing profession is important. Spiritual care can reduce patients' depression and improve their quality of life. Implementing spiritual care can help individuals have satisfying experiences. Perceived professional benefit is a positive emotional experience that is important in retention intention. However, the relationship among spiritual care competence, perceived professional benefit, and retention intention remains unclear. Methods. In this cross-sectional and correlational study, convenience sampling was used to recruit 266 intern nursing students in 10 hospitals throughout China. An online questionnaire was used to assess their sociodemographic characteristics, spiritual care competence, perceived professional benefit, and retention intention. Statistical analyses included the t-test, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation analysis, and bootstrap analysis. Results. Intern nursing students' mean scores were 103.35 ± 19.00 for spiritual care competence, 72.88 ± 10.40 for perceived professional benefit, and 19.58 ± 3.37 for retention intention. Spiritual care competence was positively correlated with perceived professional benefit (r = 0.545; p < 0.01) and retention intention (r = 0.149; p < 0.05). Perceived professional benefit was also positively correlated with retention intention (r = 0.320; p < 0.01). Bootstrap analysis showed that perceived professional benefit completely mediates the relationship between spiritual care competence and retention intention. Conclusions. We found that nursing interns had a moderate level of retention intention, and perceived professional benefit was the mediating variable between spiritual care competence and retention intention. Implications. Our study results suggest that nursing administrators and educators should improve nursing interns' spiritual care competence and perceived professional benefit to enhance their willingness to remain in the nursing profession and alleviate nurse shortages. Low mental health literacy is a public health concern in China and contributes to the low underutilization of mental health resources. We extended the current conceptualization of mental health literacy and developed a comprehensive self-report measure of mental health literacy in the Chinese context, the Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire (MHLQ). We generated items based on existing literature, extensive qualitative interviews with mental health professionals and community members. We revised these items based on expert review to examine content validity, after which we conducted a pilot test with a representative sample of 734 urban and rural community members to illicit feedback on wording clarity and select items within appropriate difficulty levels (i.e., correct rate). We then examined dimensionality and item performance using multidimensional item response theory analyses in a combined sample of mental health professionals (n = 122), community members (n = 121), and college students (n = 144). We concluded a six-factor structure for the MHLQ encompassing mental health knowledge, mental illness knowledge, attitudes towards mental health, attitudes towards mental illness, behaviors regarding mental health promotion, and behaviors regarding mental illness coping. The scale yielded adequate internal reliability estimates and test-retest agreement, and convergent evidence and known-group comparisons results in support of construct validity. The six-factor MHLQ largely supported our extended theoretical conceptualization of the mental health literacy in the Chinese context. Purpose. This study aimed to investigate nurses' perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care and perceived professional benefits in China and reveal the relationship between them. Design and Methods. In this study, 372 nurses (response rate: 93.47%) from a number of hospitals across China were surveyed using convenience sampling. The data were collected through online questionnaires, including a sociodemographic characteristics form, the Chinese version of the Spiritual Care-Giving Scale (C-SCGS), and the Nurses' Perceived Professional Benefits Questionnaire (NPPBQ). Findings. The total score of the NPPBQ was 136.88 ± 20.13. A statistically significant relationship was found between the total score and subscale score of the C-SCGS and the total score and subscale score of the NPPBQ (R = 0.217–0.475, P < 0.01). Practice Implications. Nursing managers and educators should pay attention to improving nurses' perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care in order to help nurses gain more perceived professional benefits. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the status quo of nurses' spiritual care competency and their relationship with perceived professional benefit. Background: Spiritual care has always been considered a vitally important part of holistic nursing. Understanding the spiritual care competency of nurses during the COVID‐19 pandemic can help nursing managers understand the weak links in spiritual care practice and improve the quality of nursing service. As a positive emotional experience and cognitive evaluation of the profession, perceived professional benefit can serve to adjust work pressure, relieve job burnout and promote an individual's overall growth. However, the relationship between perceived professional benefit among nurses and spiritual care competency remains unclear. Methods: A total of 372 nurses were recruited from 15 separate Chinese hospitals. An online questionnaire was used to assess nurses' sociodemographic, spiritual care competency and perceived professional benefit. Statistical analyses were performed using Pearson's correlation analysis, t test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multiple stepwise linear regression analysis. Results: The total mean score of spiritual care competency (99.43 ± 21.10) among nurses was found to be moderate. Nurses' spiritual care competency was positively correlated with perceived professional benefit (P <.01). The multiple stepwise linear regression model (n = 372) had an explained variance (R2 = 0.218) and showed that perceived professional benefit and the manner of receiving spiritual training were the main influencing factors of nurses' spiritual care competency (P <.001). Conclusion: The study findings indicated that nurses need to improve their spiritual care competency by improving their perceived professional benefit. Implication for nursing managers: Our study evaluated the spiritual care competency of nurses and explored the correlation between perceived professional benefit and spiritual care competency among nurses. The results of this study can help nursing managers to carry out relevant interventions, thus improving nurses' spiritual care competency and optimizing the quality of nursing. Purpose: We sought to identify distinct risk factors for hyperuricemia in native Tibetan and immigrant Han populations in Tibet, China., Methods: Three cohorts of male participants aged between 20 and 40 years were enrolled in this study. Biochemical parameters including serum uric acid (UA), fasting plasma glucose, insulin, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), thyroxin, blood cell count, aminotransferase, and lipid profiles were analyzed. The association of risk factors with UA levels was evaluated using a multivariable line regression model. The effect of UA level on the biochemical parameters between the Hans and Tibetans was evaluated by two-way ANOVA., Results: The prevalence of hyperuricemia (≥420 μmol/L) was 24.8% (62/250) in the Hans, similar to 23.8% (29/136) in the Tibetans. In the regression analysis, the risk factors that were significantly associated with UA in Hans did not apply to Tibetans. Tibetans had higher fasting insulin ( P <0.05) and LDH ( P <0.01) levels, in contrast with lower levels of triglycerides ( P <0.05), total cholesterol ( P <0.01), and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol ( P <0.01) than Hans in normal UA populations. Biochemistry analysis revealed lower albumin levels ( P <0.001) and higher levels of all aminotransaminase and especially alkaline phosphatase ( P <0.01) in Tibetans than in Hans in both populations. Compared with Hans, Tibetans had lower serum levels of urea, creatinine, and electrolytes in the normal UA population, which were further exacerbated in the high UA population. Tibetans had comparable white blood cell counts as Hans in both normal and high UA populations. The study aimed to explore the opinions of multi-field Chinese experts on mental health literacy and further build a comprehensive picture of mental health literacy based on these opinions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten Chinese experts from the fields of psychiatry, clinical psychology, mental health education, and social work. A mixed deductive-inductive thematic analysis was used in the analysis of the qualitative data. The experts noted that mental health literacy applies both to persons with mental illness and the people who help them. The comprehensive view of mental health literacy that emerged from the interviews included knowledge about mental illness, an attitude of acceptance, respectful behavior, and recognition of the importance of getting help. Characteristically, Chinese components of mental health literacy included living in harmony with others and achieving balance in all aspects of life. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first qualitative study of experts' views of the concept of mental health literacy in the context of Chinese culture. The experts' responses to the interviews generated a comprehensive view of mental health literacy, including several elements that may be especially salient in Chinese culture. The results have implications for researchers and clinicians.

Previous studies have suggested that pathogenic variants in interferon regulatoryse factor 6 (IRF6) can account for almost 70% of familial Van der Woude Syndrome (VWS) cases. However, gene modifiers that account for the phenotypic variability of IRF6 in the context of VWS remain poorly characterized. The aim of this study was to report a family with VWS with variable expressivity and to identify the genetic cause. A 4‑month‑old boy initially presented with cleft palate and bilateral lower lip pits. Examination of his family history identified similar, albeit milder, clinical features in another four family members, including bilateral lower lip pits and/or hypodontia. Peripheral blood samples of eight members in this three‑generation family were subsequently collected, and whole‑exome sequencing was performed to detect pathogenic variants. A heterozygous missense IRF6 variant with a c.1198C>T change in exon 9 (resulting in an R400W change at the amino acid level) was detected in five affected subjects, but not in the other three unaffected subjects. Moreover, subsequent structural analysis was indicative of damaged stability to the structure in the mutant IRF protein. Whole‑transcriptome sequencing, expression analysis and Gene Ontology enrichment analysis were conducted on two groups of patients with phenotypic diversity from the same family. These analyses identified significant differentially expressed genes and enriched pathways in these two groups. Altogether, these findings provide insight into the mechanism underlying the variable expressivity of VWS.

Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a novel parvovirus associated with respiratory tract diseases and gastrointestinal illness in adult and pediatric patients throughout the world. To investigate the epidemiological and genetic variation of HBoV in Guangzhou, South China, we screened 3460 throat swab samples from 1686 children and 1774 adults with acute respiratory infection symptoms for HBoV between March 2010 and February 2011, and analyzed the complete genome sequence of 2 HBoV strains. Specimens were screened for HBoV by real-time PCR and other 6 common respiratory viruses by RT-PCR or PCR. HBoV was detected in 58 (1.68%) out of 3460 samples, mostly from pediatric patients (52/58) and inpatient children (47/58). Six adult patients were detected as HBoV positive and 5 were emergency cases. Of these HBoV positive cases, 19 (32.76%) had co-pathogens including influenza virus (n = 5), RSV (n = 5), parainfluenza (n = 4), adenovirus (n = 1), coronavirus (n = 7). The complete genome sequences of 2 HBoVs strains (Genbank no. JN794565 and JN794566) were analyzed. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the 2 HBoV strains were HBoV1, and were most genetically close to ST2 (GenBank accession number DQ0000496). Recombination analysis confirmed that HBoV strain GZ9081 was an intra-genotype recombinant strain among HBoV1 variants.

Aims: Ethnicity is an important variable influencing drug response. Thiopurine S-methyltransferase (TPMT) plays an important role in the metabolism of thiopurine drugs. Previous population studies have identified ethnic variations in both phenotype and genotype of TPMT, but limited information is available within Chinese population that comprises at least 56 ethnic groups. The current study was conducted to compare both phenotype and genotype of TPMT in healthy Han and Yao Chinese children., Methods: TPMT activity was measured in healthy Chinese children by a HPLC assay (n = 213, 87 Han Chinese and 126 Yao Chinese). Allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) were used to determine the frequency of TPMT mutant alleles (TPMT*2, TPMT*3 A, TPMT*3B and TPMT*3C) in these children., Results: There was no significant difference in the mean TPMT activity between Han and Yao Chinese children. A unimodal distribution of TPMT activity in Chinese children was found and the mean TPMT activity was 13.32 +/- 3.49 U ml(-1) RBC. TPMT activity was not found to differ with gender, but tended to increase with age in Yao Chinese children. TPMT*2, TPMT*3B and TPMT*3A were not detected, and only one TPMT*3C heterozygote (Han child) was identified in 213 Chinese children. Erythrocyte TPMT activity of this TPMT*3C heterozygote was 12.36 U ml(-1) RBC. The frequency of the known mutant TPMT alleles was 0.2%[1/426] in Chinese children., Conclusion: The frequency distribution of RBC TPMT activity was unimodal. The frequency of the known mutant TPMT alleles in Chinese Children is low and TPMT*3C appears to be the most prevalent among the tested mutant TPMT alleles in this population.

Objective: This study was to investigate the gene mutation of thiopurine S-methyltransferase (TPMT) in Uygur Chinese., Methods: Polymerase chain reaction-based methods were used to analyze three commonly reported inactivating mutations-G238C, G460A and A719G., Results: One TPMT*3A heterozygote and five TPMT*3C heterozygotes were found in 160 Uygur Chinese subjects, and allele frequencies of TPMT*3A and TPMT*3C were 0.3% and 1.6%, respectively., Conclusion: TPMT*3C is a common mutant allele in Uygur Chinese, while TPMT*3A is a rare mutant allele in Uygur Chinese.

Objective: To investigate the mutant alleles of thiopurine S-methyltransferase (TPMT) among Jing Chinese., Methods: Polymerse chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) techniques were developed for assaying exons 5, 7 and 10 of the TPMT gene respectively and were used to detect mutant TPMT alleles among Jing Chinese., Results: Two cases of TPMT*3C (A719G) heterozygotes were identified in 103 Jing Chinese; other deleterious alleles such as TPMT*2 (G238C), TPMT*3A (G460A/A719G) and TPMT*3B (G460A) were not found; 27 cases of silent mutant allele TPMT*1S (T474C) were also identified (5 homozygotes and 22 heterozygotes)., Conclusion: The PCR-SSCP assay established and adopted in this study was sensitive and reliable, which could be used to detect mutant TPMT alleles. Allele frequency of TPMT*3C is low among Jing Chinese (1.0%), and TPMT*3C appears to be the most prevalent deleterious allele in this population.
