Background: The zero-profile implant system (Zero-P) and conventional plates have been widely used in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) to treat cervical spondylosis. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of the application of Zero-P and new conventional plates (ZEVO, Skyline) in ACDF on the sagittal imaging parameters of cervical spondylosis patients and to analyze their clinical efficacy. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study on 119 cervical spondylosis patients from January 2018 to December 2021, comparing outcomes between those receiving the Zero-P device (n = 63) and those receiving a novel conventional plate (n = 56, including 46 ZEVO and 10 Skyline plates) through ACDF. Cervical sagittal alignment was assessed pre- and postoperatively via lateral radiographs. The Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA), Neck Disability Index (NDI), and visual analog scale (VAS) scores were recorded at baseline, after surgery, and at the 2-year follow-up to evaluate patient recovery and intervention success. Results: There were significant differences in the postoperative C0-C2 Cobb angle and postoperative sagittal segmental angle (SSA) between patients in the novel conventional plate group and those in the Zero-P group (P < 0.05). Postoperatively, there were significant changes in the C2‒C7 Cobb angle, C0‒C2 Cobb angle, SSA, and average surgical disc height (ASDH) compared to the preoperative values in both patient groups (P < 0.05). Dysphagia in the immediate postoperative period was lower in the Zero-P group than in the new conventional plate group (0% in the Zero-P group, 7.14% in the novel conventional plate group, P = 0.046), and the symptoms disappeared within 2 years in both groups. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of complications of adjacent spondylolisthesis (ASD) at 2 years postoperatively (3.17% in the Zero-P group, 8.93% in the novel conventional plate group; P = 0.252). According to the subgroup analysis, there were significant differences in the postoperative C2‒C7 Cobb angle, C0‒C2 Cobb angle, T1 slope, and ASDH between the ZEVO group and the Skyline group (P < 0.05). Compared with the preoperative scores, the JOA, NDI, and VAS scores of all groups significantly improved at the 2-year follow-up (P < 0.01). According to the subgroup analysis, the immediate postoperative NDI and VAS scores of the ZEVO group were significantly better than those of the Skyline group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: In ACDF, both novel conventional plates and Zero-P can improve sagittal parameters and related scale scores. Compared to the Zero-P plate, the novel conventional plate has a greater advantage in correcting the curvature of the surgical segment, but the Zero-P plate is less likely to produce postoperative dysphagia. Terrestrial carbon storage (CS) plays a crucial role in achieving carbon balance and mitigating global climate change. This study employs the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways and Representative Concentration Pathways (SSPs-RCPs) published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and incorporates the Policy Control Scenario (PCS) regulated by China's land management policies. The Future Land Use Simulation (FLUS) model is employed to generate a 1 km resolution land use/cover change (LUCC) dataset for China in 2030 and 2060. Based on the carbon density dataset of China's terrestrial ecosystems, the study analyses CS changes and their relationship with land use changes spanning from 1990 to 2060. The findings indicate that the quantitative changes in land use in China from 1990 to 2020 are characterised by a reduction in the area proportion of cropland and grassland, along with an increase in the impervious surface and forest area. This changing trend is projected to continue under the PCS from 2020 to 2060. Under the SSPs-RCPs scenario, the proportion of cropland and impervious surface predominantly increases, while the proportions of forest and grassland continuously decrease. Carbon loss in China's carbon storage from 1990 to 2020 amounted to 0.53 × 1012 kg, primarily due to the reduced area of cropland and grassland. In the SSPs-RCPs scenario, more significant carbon loss occurs, reaching a peak of 8.07 × 1012 kg in the SSP4-RCP3.4 scenario. Carbon loss is mainly concentrated in the southeastern coastal area and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region of China, with urbanisation and deforestation identified as the primary drivers. In the future, it is advisable to enhance the protection of forests and grassland while stabilising cropland areas and improving the intensity of urban land. Objective To investigate the relationship between triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and the total load of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and its different imaging markers. Methods A total of 202 patients with CSVD admitted to The Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University from January 2020 to May 2022 were selected. The clinical data of all patients were collected and TyG index was calculated. The lacunes, cerebral microbleeds (CMBs), white matter hyperintensity (WMH) and enlarged perivascular space (EPVS) were evaluated by MRI, and total load of CSVD score was calculated. Results 1) TyG index and total load of CSVD score: Logistic regression analysis showed the male (OR = 2.245, 95%CI: 1.017-4.957; P = 0.045), increase of age (OR = 1.084, 95%CI: 1.046-1.124; P = 0.000), hypertension (OR = 2.457, 95%CI: 1.189-5.078; P = 0.015) and increase of TyG index (OR = 2.657, 95%CI: 1.353-5.216; P = 0.005) were risk factors for moderate and severe total load of CSVD. 2) TyG index and imaging markers of CSVD: Logistic regression analysis showed the increase of TyG index was the risk factor of moderate and severe WMH (OR = 2.313, 95%CI: 1.095-4.885; P = 0.028), CMBs (OR = 1.690, 95%CI: 1.011-2.824; P = 0.045), lacunes (OR = 2.087, 95%CI: 1.235-3.525; P = 0.006), moderate and severe EPVS in basal ganglia (OR = 2.005, 95%CI: 1.190-3.378; P = 0.009). With the development of urbanization, the transportation network of underground tunnels has been gradually formed and improved. It is a complicated issue for engineering construction when two municipal road tunnels intersect at one point. Based on a construction site of the crossing point of the Huayuan Road Tunnel and Luzhou Road Tunnel in Hefei City, China, the finite element analysis method is used to calculate and analyze the deformation characteristics of the crossing point of the tunnels during the asymmetric construction of connecting parts. The deformation behaviors of the crossing point of tunnels subjected to symmetrical construction are also studied for comparison. Results show that the deformations of the supporting pile and tunnel frame structures increase rapidly when they are subjected to asymmetric construction, while the lateral movement of the supporting pile and the deformation of the tunnel structure can be greatly limited when the symmetrical construction method is adopted. Some suggestions for engineering construction are put forward to ensure the safety of the structure, such as multi-stage construction and temporary supporting measure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Disentangling the relative contributions of deterministic and stochastic processes was critical to compressive understanding of underlying mechanism governing geographic pattern and assembly of phytoplankton community, while it was seldom performed in connected lakes under human pressure. Here, we investigated phytoplankton community pattern in relation to environmental and spatial factors over 81 lakes located in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River (MLYR) floodplain, where many lakes suffered from eutrophication and cyanobacterial blooms. A majority of MLYR lakes had higher phytoplankton abundance surpassing 107 cells/L and were dominated by common bloom-forming cyanobacterial genera, including Pseudanabaena, Microcystis, Merismopedia, Dolichospermum, Limnothrix, and Raphidiopsis. Phytoplankton community exhibited a striking geographical pattern both for taxonomic and functional compositions, while functional groups were less sensitive, and dissimilarity in communities displayed no significant increases with increasing geographical distance. Further, species richness explained much higher percentage of community variations than species turnover, indicating a reduced effect of environmental filtering of phytoplankton species with tolerance to similar environments in connected MLYR lakes. Both deterministic and stochastic processes governed assembly and biogeographic of phytoplankton community. Variation partition analysis showed that spatial factors exhibited greater influence on phytoplankton community compared to environmental variables. The stronger influence of spatial factors was further demonstrated by Mantel test and neutral community model. These findings indicate that deterministic and stochastic processes exhibited similar biogeographic patterns for phytoplankton community in MLYR lakes, but stochastic process was overwhelmingly dominated. This study explored the potential relationship between levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in plasma and freezing of gait (FOG) in Parkinson's disease (PD) in China. A total of 72 healthy subjects, 62 PD patients with FOG, and 83 PD patients without FOG from our center were enrolled in this prospective study. Patients with FOG showed significantly higher hs-CRP levels than controls, but patients without FOG did not. Binary logistic regression analysis identified levels of hs-CRP in plasma to be an independent risk factor for FOG among the patients in our cohort (OR 6.371, 95% CI 2.589–15.678, p < 0.001). In fact, a cut-off level of 0.935 mg/L distinguished patients with or without FOG [area under the ROC curve (AUC) = 0.908, sensitivity 87.1%, specificity 89.2%]. Our study suggests that high levels of hs-CRP in plasma are associated with the occurrence of FOG in PD. The pooled data combined with a previous study carried out in Spain also indicate a positive association between plasma hs-CRP levels and FOG in PD. The study aimed to investigate the level of life satisfaction (LS) among Chinese female workers after resuming work during the COVID-19 epidemic, and to further explore the potential mediating and moderating roles in the association between family stress and LS. Self-reported questionnaires were completed by 10,175 participants. Results showed that the level of LS decreased. The family stress had a negative effect on LS, and the effect was mediated by anxiety symptoms. Additionally, age moderated the direct and indirect effects within this relationship. Background: It is well known that some lifestyle-related behaviors are related to depressive symptoms, but the unique and cumulative effects of lifestyle-related behaviors on depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents are still controversial. Aims: The aims of this study were to examine the unique and cumulative effects of lifestyle-related behaviors on depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents, and explored the potential influences of gender difference on these associations. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 3967 Chinese adolescents aged 11 to 19 from Jilin, China during September and October of 2018. Students reported their lifestyle factors including sleep duration, time spent on computer, time spent on television, time spent on homework, eating breakfast, smoking, drinking, physical activity, and outdoor activity. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Results: The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 28.2% among Chinese adolescents. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that sleep duration <8 hour/day, time spent on homework ⩾3 hour/day, skipping breakfast, alcohol use, physical activity <3 days/week, and outdoor activity <2 hour/day were positively associated with depressive symptoms in both girls and boys. Time spent on computer ⩾2 hour/day was an independent risk predictor for depressive symptoms in males, while smoking only showed higher risk of depressive symptoms in females. There was an additive relationship between the lifestyle risk index scores and the risk of depressive symptoms for both genders, the relationship being strongest among females. Conclusion: The important role of lifestyle factors should be taking into consideration when create intervention programs to prevent and reduce depressive symptoms among adolescents. The invertebrate communities on floating cultivated seaweeds were studied by both field surveys and experiments in order to analyze community structure in a typical mariculture zone, Nanao, South China. Samples of invertebrates were collected from the water and the thalli of the seaweeds, Gracilaria lemaneiformis and G. chouae. The results showed that both species were rapidly colonized by invertebrates after being introduced into the mariculture region. The communities on the seaweeds were significantly different from those in the ambient waters. Invertebrate abundance was much higher in the seaweed than in the water. The high proportion of larvae indicates that these species are using the seaweed thalli as a platform for reproduction. Therefore, large‐scale seaweed cultivation is beneficial for colonization of invertebrates and shelters higher numbers of copepod larvae than in the sea. This drives ecological changes in the invertebrate communities in coastal ecosystems and facilitates interactions with other communities and higher trophic levels in the cultivated seaweed food web. Various studies have found that bullying victimization is an important factor affecting depression. However, few studies have explored the underlying mechanism of this effect. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of bullying victimization on depression, as well as the mediating roles of internet addiction and sleep quality. The participants were 2022 Chinese junior high school students who completed questionnaires regarding bullying victimization, internet addiction, sleep quality and depression. Correlation analysis indicated that bullying victimization, poor sleep quality, internet addiction, and depression have significant, positive correlations with each other. Hayes' PROCESS macro revealed that internet addiction and sleep quality played multiple mediation roles in the relationship between bullying victimization and depression. These results suggested that effective strategies focusing on improving problematic internet use along with sleep quality may contribute to reducing the negative effect of bullying victimization on depressive symptoms. Incidence of hepatoblastoma has been increasing, but the causes of this disease remain unclear. Some studies have suggested that abnormal expressions of ALKBH5 gene are associated with multiple cancers. This study aims to test the hypothesis that hepatoblastoma risk may be modulated by genetic polymorphisms in ALKBH5 gene based on genotyped data from samples of 328 cases and 1476 controls enrolled from eight hospitals in China. We used TaqMan assay to genotype ALKBH5 gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs1378602G > A and rs8400G > A. We calculated the odds ratios (ORs) and P values using logistic regression models to estimate the association between hepatoblastoma risk and ALKBH5 gene SNPs. We found the rs1378602G > A and rs8400G > A could not impact hepatoblastoma risk in single or combined analysis. Stratified analysis revealed that subjects with the rs8400 AA genotype are prone to getting hepatoblastoma in the clinical stage III + IV subgroup (adjusted OR = 1.93, 95% CI = 1.20–3.10, P = 0.007), when compared to those with GG/GA genotype. False-positive report probability validated the reliability of the significant results. Preliminary functional annotations revealed that rs8400 A is correlated with increased expression of ALKBH5 gene in the expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) analysis. In all, our investigation presents evidence of a weak impact of ALKBH5 gene polymorphisms on hepatoblastoma risk, using the largest hepatoblastoma sample size. The present study aimed to determine the mediating effects of depression and anxiety on the association between life satisfaction and quality of life. We used the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and EuroQol Five Dimensions Questionnaire (EQ-5D) to measure depression, anxiety, and quality of life, respectively. A single question was used to measure the life satisfaction of participants. Life satisfaction was significantly related with depression (r = −0.17), anxiety (r = −0.18), and quality of life (r = 0.19). Depression and anxiety were also related to quality of life. Depression and anxiety had full mediating effects (β = −0.274; β = −0.208) on the association between life satisfaction and quality of life. For those with poor life satisfaction, people were more likely to have high level of depression and anxiety, which in turn experienced poor quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purposes of this study was to assess the youth mental health after the coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) occurred in China two weeks later, and to investigate factors of mental health among youth groups. A cross-sectional study was conducted two weeks after the occurrence of COVID-19 in China. A total of 584 youth enrolled in this study and completed the question about cognitive status of COVID-19, the General Health Questionnaire(GHQ-12), the PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C) and the Negative coping styles scale. Univariate analysis and univariate logistic regression were used to evaluate the effect of COVID-19 on youth mental health. The results of this cross-sectional study suggest that nearly 40.4% the sampled youth were found to be prone to psychological problems and 14.4% the sampled youth with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Univariate logistic regression revealed that youth mental health was significantly related to being less educated (OR = 8.71, 95%CI:1.97–38.43), being the enterprise employee (OR = 2.36, 95%CI:1.09–5.09), suffering from the PTSD symptom (OR = 1.05, 95%CI:1.03–1.07) and using negative coping styles (OR = 1.03, 95%CI:1.00–1.07). Results of this study suggest that nearly 40.4% of the youth group had a tendency to have psychological problems. Thus, this was a remarkable evidence that infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, may have an immense influence on youth mental health. Therefor, local governments should develop effective psychological interventions for youth groups, moreover, it is important to consider the educational level and occupation of the youth during the interventions. This study aims to explore the relationship between psychological distress and post-traumatic stress disorder among Chinese participants as the result of COVID-19 outbreak. This study was conducted within 1 month after COVID-19 appeared in China, it included 570 participants age from 14 to 35. The results indicated that 12.8% of all participants with the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and the effects of psychological distress on post-traumatic stress disorder was mediated by negative coping style. Gender moderated the direct effect between psychological distress and post-traumatic stress disorder, which is a significant discovery for relevant departments to take further measures. To solve the problem of unstable sealing in the sealing section of a gassy, soft coal seam, a seal reinforcement material for gas extraction boreholes was developed, which was mainly made of ordinary Portland cement and blended with additives such as aluminium powder, quicklime, and gypsum. Firstly, in order to obtain the necessary expansion and compressive strength of reinforcement material, key factors affecting the material properties were determined. Key factors affecting the expansion properties and compressive strength of reinforcing materials were investigated by a single-factor test. Moreover, according to the central combination (Box–Behnken) experimental principle and response surface analysis (RSA), the interactions of various factors on the expansion and compressive strength were determined, and the optimal experimental conditions were acquired. The experimental results indicated that the optimum ratio of the material was 2% for gypsum and 0.52% for aluminium powder and quicklime at the experimental temperature of 20°C, and the ratio of water to material was 0.6. Finally, in the N1103 working face of No. 3 coal seam of Yuwu coal mine, Luan Group, China, the sealing property of the reinforcement material was validated, and the problem of hole collapse at the borehole orifice was solved (resulting in a gas concentration 2.48 times that measured before borehole reinforcement), and the gas drainage effect was enhanced. With its huge ageing population, China faces an enormous challenge for its elderly support and care. One of the proposed solutions was to diversify the elderly support systems. Towards this goal, setting up the Elderly Care Departments in the community health service centres is one of such new Chinese endeavour. This qualitative study was conducted among the residents enrolled in existing Elderly Care Departments established at the community health service centres in Chongqing, a Southwestern Chinese city, to evaluate the lived experience of the residents and to find strategies for improvement. Eighteen participants were recruited from the residents of the Elderly Care Departments of three community health service centres in the city. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth individual interviews and were analysed utilising the Colaizzi's phenomenological method. Five main themes were identified: Safety and trust; Satisfaction and relief; Gratitude and mutual understanding; Complaints and helplessness; and Worries and apprehension. We found that set-up of the Elderly Care Departments at the community health service centres appeared to be consistent with the idea of integrated care and in general, the current running mode was able to provide the elderly with effective medical, nursing and other cares. Background: Threatened premature labor (TPL) is a severe obstetric complication which affects the mental and physical health of both the mother and fetus. Family resilience may have protective role against psychological distress in women experiencing these pregnancy complications. There may be resilience related risk factors in TPL women, and interplays may exist among psychological variables and within couples. This study aims to examine psychological outcomes influenced by different levels of resilience, and explore psychological interactions in TPL women, spouses, and between women and spouses.Methods: Six validated questionnaires were used to measure the psychological outcomes (Connor-Davidson resilience scale CD-RISC, Edinburgh postnatal depression scale EPDS, positive and negative affect scale PANAS, pregnancy pressure scale PPS, simplified coping style questionnaire SCSQ, social support rating scale SSRS) in 126 TPL women hospitalized in three tertiary hospitals and 104 spouses in Southwest China.Results: Low resilient women had significantly more complicated placenta praevia, longer pediatric observation, more pressure than high resilient women. They also had significantly less active coping and positive affect, more negative affect and depression compared to high resilient women and their spouses. Although the socio-demographic characteristics of both TPL women and spouses and psychometric parameters of spouses had no significant differences, the prevalence rates of depression in spouses were notable. Compared with spouses, TPL women had a more complex interaction among these psychometric factors, with women's resilience negatively associated with their partners' negative affect, and their pressure positively correlated with pressure and negative affect of spouses.Conclusions: Pregnancy complicated with placenta praevia and pediatric observation may be risk factors for resilience of women with TPL. Maternal resilience has an important impact on the psychological outcomes in TPL women. A screening for resilience, depression and other psychological outcomes in couples with TPL and early psychological intervention of low resilient couples may be appropriate to promote resilience and well-being of these families. Risk perception is critical to the formation of individual health prevention behaviors. A long-term accurate perception of stroke recurrent risks is imperative for stroke secondary prevention. This study aims to explore the level of recurrence risk perceptions and the influential factors of inaccuracy between perceived and objective risk in first-ever ischemic stroke patients from a rural area. From May to November 2020, 284 first-ever ischemic stroke patients were conveniently recruited in a rural area of Henan Province, China. Perceived risk was measured based on self-reported using a numerical rating scale, whereas the objective risk was measured by the Essen Stroke Risk Score. Patients' perceived risk was compared with their objective risk and categorized as "Accurate," "Underestimated," and "Overestimated." The influencing factors of inaccuracy were further evaluated using multivariate regression analyses. 46% of the participants underestimated their stroke risk, while 15.9% overestimated their risks. Patients who were younger (≤65 years), didn't worry about recurrent stroke, and had a low actual recurrent risk were more likely to underestimate their recurrent risk. Patients who were employed, had lower independence, and had greater anxiety were more likely to overestimate their recurrent risk. The majority of participants were unable to accurately perceive their own risk of stroke recurrence. Patients' age, working status, worry about recurrent stroke, actual recurrent risk, level of dependence, and anxiety played a role in perception inaccuracy. The findings could help healthcare providers gain a better understanding of the level and accuracy of recurrence risk perceptions among first-ever stroke patients in the rural area. Future counseling on the perceived risk of stroke recurrence and individual objective risk assessment could be conducted to help patients better understand their risk of recurrence. A fuzzy matter-element model, combined with the entropy weight of an index, has been used as an evaluation method to achieve a comprehensive assessment and analysis of the operational efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The feasibility of the method had been validated based on actual operational data and instance from eight WWTPs located in a city in Northern China. According to the results of the comprehensive evaluation, the operational efficiency of the WWTP using an anaerobic/anoxic/oxic process was generally better than other wastewater treating technologies. And especially, the removal efficiencies of nitrogen and phosphorus pollutants were much higher for the process, which suits well the actual operational situation of Chinese WWTPs. Total nitrogen (TN) removal rate and the productive quantity of the excess sludge cake were identified as important factors in the evaluation of the operational efficiency for a WWTP. So the operation level of WWTP could be improved by increasing the TN removal rate and decreasing the excess sludge cake quantity. The developed method can evaluate and analyze the operational efficiency scientifically and objectively, and the evaluation results can be used to guide the construction, operation and management of WWTPs in The Three Gorge reservoir district of China. The aim of this study was to analyze the occurrence and variations in C-shaped canals in ancient Chinese teeth and compare the differences of these features between ancient and age-matched modern populations. Approximately 5000-year-old craniofacial bone remains were collected from the fossils of 38 individuals (total: 68 mandibular second molars) excavated from the Jiaojia site. The control group comprised of an equal number of randomly selected modern samples. We used cone-beam computed tomography to scan the mandible along the apex-crown axis and analyzed the canal morphology, based on Fan's categorization criterion, at 2 mm, 5 mm, and 8 mm to the apical level. Grooves on the lingual and buccal sides were also recorded. The proportion of C-shaped roots among ancient samples on the left and right sides were 48.57 % (17/35 teeth) and 54.55 % (18/33 teeth), respectively, and 51.47 % (35/68 teeth) in the total sample. Conversely, in the control group, 44.12 % (15/34) and 38.24 % (13/34) occurred on the left and right sides, respectively, and 41.18 % (28/68) in the total sample. Among the C-shaped canals from the Jiaojia site samples, the classification type changed between two adjacent levels in 84.31 % of samples. Approximately 35 (51.5 %) teeth had a fused root, 20 (29.41 %) had one shallow buccal and one deep lingual groove. The occurrence of C-shape variation was not significantly correlated with time (p ＞0.05). Background: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in China and around the world. Early detection is key to improving the survival rate of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Alteration in glycosylation has been observed in cancers, and glycans can be a source for the development of new biomarkers for NSCLC. Methods: In this glycan biomarker discovery study, we measured serum N- and O-glycan profiles in NSCLC patients with different stages and healthy controls by performing lectin microarray analysis. The alterations of serum glycopatterns were compared between NSCLC patients and controls, and the stage-related changes in serum glycosylation were evaluated. Results: There were 18 lectins (e.g., AAL, Jacalin, GSL-I and DBA) to give significantly alterations of serum glycopatterns in lung adenocarcinoma compared with control group. Meanwhile, 16 lectins (e.g., Jacalin, HHL, and PHA-E+L) exhibited significantly alterations of serum glycopatterns in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) compared with control group. Importantly, most of the lectins showing altered signals exhibited significantly increased or decreased NFIs in patients with early stage adenocarcinoma and SCC. Conclusions: The serum glycan profiles were significantly different between NSCLC and healthy control, and most of the glycosylation changes had occurred at early stage. Background: The impact of strabismus on visual function, self-image, self-esteem, and social interactions might decrease health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties and clinical applications of two strabismus-specific HRQoL questionnaires in the cultural context of China.Methods: The Chinese versions of the Adult Strabismus Quality of Life Questionnaire (AS-20) and the Amblyopia and Strabismus Questionnaire (ASQE) were self-administered to 304 adults with strabismus. The Cronbach's α coefficient was calculated to assess the internal consistency reliability. The criterion-related validity was identified by exploring Spearman's correlation with the most widely used vision-specific quality of life questionnaire NEI-VFQ-25. One-way ANOVA was employed to examine the differences in the quality of life of strabismus patients with visually normal adults and with other eye diseases patients.Results: Significantly positive correlations with NEI-VFQ-25 were shown in both scales (r = 0.21 - 0.44, p <0.05, p <0.01). Both scales could distinguish individuals with strabismus from visually normal adults (p <0.001) and adults with other eye diseases (p <0.001). The overall Cronbach's α value were 0.91 for the AS-20 and 0.89 for the ASQE; and for the subscales, the α value ranged from 0.68 to 0.90.Conclusion: This was the first cross-sectional study to compare the psychometric properties of two strabismus-targeted questionnaires, AS-20 and ASQE in the context of Chinese culture. Objective: When diagnosed as having pulmonary nodules, patients may be mired in the conflict of medical decision-making and suffered from distress. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating role of decision-making conflict in the relationship between participation satisfaction in medical decision-making (PSMD) and distress among Chinese patients with incidental pulmonary nodules.Methods: A total of 163 outpatients with incidental pulmonary nodules detected in a tertiary hospital were recruited and investigated by Impact of Event Scale (IES), Decision Conflict Scale (DCS), participation satisfaction in medical decision-making Scale (PSMDS), and demographic questionnaire.Results: The mean IES score was 37.35 ± 16.65, representing a moderate level. PSMD was negatively associated with distress, while decision-making conflict was positively associated with distress. The final regression model contained three factors: having a first-degree relative diagnosed with lung cancer, worrying about getting lung cancer someday, and decision-making conflict. These three factors explained 49.4 % of the variance of distress. The total effect of PSMD on distress and indirect effect of SPMD on distress caused-by decision-making conflict were significant (P < 0.05). However, the direct effect of PSMD on distress was not significant.Conclusions: Participation of patients in medical decision-making can lower their distress by reducing patient's decision-making conflict.Practice Implications: Interventions targeting at the decision-making conflict will help alleviate the distress level of patients with pulmonary nodules.Data Availability: The data that support the findings of this study are available on request from the corresponding author. The study aimed to confirm the association between work-family conflict and life satisfaction among Chinese female employees, and to further examine the moderated role of age within the relationship. A cross-sectional study was conducted from July to August of 2020 in Jilin province, China. 14,910 female employees completed the self-reported questionnaires. Propensity score matching (PSM) method was used to assess the impact of work-family conflict on life satisfaction. Then the moderation model was examined by the Haye's PROCESS macro. The results confirmed that work-family conflict was negatively related to life satisfaction after using PSM to minimize the impact of confounding factors. In addition, age acted as a moderator which the effect of work-family conflict on life satisfaction became stronger as the age increased. Overall, work-family conflict exerted a negative effect on life satisfaction, and the relationship was stronger as age increased among middle-aged female employees. Upper Ordovician strata exposed from the Baiyanhuashan section is the most representative Late Ordovician unit in the northwestern margin of the North China Craton (NCC). In total, 1,215 conodont specimens were obtained from 24 samples through the Wulanhudong and Baiyanhuashan formations at the Baiyanhuashan section. Thirty-six species belonging to 17 genera, including Tasmanognathus coronatus new species, are present. Based on this material, three conodont biozones—the Belodina confluens Biozone, the Yaoxianognathus neimengguensis Biozone, and the Yaoxianognathus yaoxianensis Biozone—have been documented, suggesting that the Baiyanhuashan conodont fauna has a stratigraphic range spanning the early to middle Katian. The Baiyanhuashan conodont fauna includes species both endemic to North China and widespread in tropical zones, allowing a reassessment of the previous correlations of the Katian conodont zonal successions proposed for North China with those established for shallow-water carbonate platforms at low latitudes. Background: Previous studies have showed the independent associations between screen time, physical activity (PA), sleep duration, and depressive symptoms, but little is known about the influence of lifestyles on depressive symptoms. This study aimed to identify clustering patterns of health-related behavior in Chinese adolescents and their association with depressive symptoms.Methods: The sample consisted of 4178 adolescent students. Screen time, physical activity, and sleep time were self-reported. The level of depressive symptoms was measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. A two-step cluster analysis was conducted to identify lifestyle patterns. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to examine the associations between clusters and depressive symptoms.Results: About 28.1% of participants reported depressive symptoms. Four lifestyle clusters were identified: (1) active pattern (n = 865 [20.7%]); (2) high sleep duration pattern (n = 1263 [30.2%]); (3) high screen time pattern (n = 665 [15.9%]); and (4) low physical activity-low sleep duration pattern (n = 1385[33.1%]). Cluster 1 and 2 were relatively healthy groups. Cluster 3 and 4 were at a higher risk of developing depressive symptoms than cluster 1.Limitations: This was a cross-sectional study, and causal relations could not be identified. Self-reported questionnaire instruments were used to collect data, which might have led to some recall bias.Conclusions: Clusters of lifestyle behaviors were identified, and differences in depressive symptoms were found among clusters. The Gongbei Tunnel, the most important and difficult part in Zhuhai Link of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, faces numerous troubles because of natural and human-related factors. A new pre-supporting technique, Freeze-Sealing Pipe Roof method, which combines Pipe-Roofing Method with Artificial Ground Freezing method, has been put forward and employed for the first time in China during the construction of the Gongbei Tunnel. An innovative freezing scheme is proposed by three kinds of freezing tubes (master, enhancing and limiting tubes) to cope with various conditions. A large-scale physical model test has been conducted so as to validate the freezing effect of Freeze-Sealing Pipe Roof method. Osteoporosis (OP) is a bone metabolism disease that is associated with inflammatory pathological mechanism. Nonetheless, rare studies have investigated the diagnostic effectiveness of immune-inflammation index in the male population. Therefore, it is interesting to achieve early diagnosis of OP in male population based on the inflammatory makers from blood routine examination. We developed a prediction model based on a training dataset of 826 Chinese male patients through a retrospective study, and the data was collected from January 2022 to May 2023. All participants underwent the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXEA) and blood routine examination. Inflammatory markers such as systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) was calculated and recorded. We utilized the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression model to optimize feature selection. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was applied to construct a predicting model incorporating the feature selected in the LASSO model. This predictive model was displayed as a nomogram. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, C-index, calibration curve, and clinical decision curve analysis (DCA) to evaluate model performance. Internal validation was test by the bootstrapping method. This study was approved by the Ethic Committee of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Ethic No. JY2023012) and conducted in accordance with the relevant guidelines and regulations. The predictive factors included in the prediction model were age, BMI, cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, neuropathy, thyroid diseases, fracture history, SII, PLR, C-reactive protein (CRP). The model displayed well discrimination with a C-index of 0.822 (95% confidence interval: 0.798-0.846) and good calibration. Internal validation showed a high C-index value of 0.805. Decision curve analysis (DCA) showed that when the threshold probability was between 3 and 76%, the nomogram had a good clinical value. This nomogram can effectively predict the incidence of OP in male population based on SII and PLR, which would help clinicians rapidly and conveniently diagnose OP with men in the future., (© 2024. Purpose: This study is the first attempt to use a combination of regression analysis and random forest algorithm to predict the risk factors for high-level fear of cancer recurrence and develop a predictive nomogram to guide clinicians and nurses in identifying high-risk populations for high-level fear of cancer recurrence., Methods: After receiving various recruitment strategies, a total of 781 survivors who had undergone breast cancer resection within 5 years in four Grade-A hospitals in China were included. Besides demographic and clinical characteristics, variables were also selected from the perspectives of somatic, cognitive, psychological, social and economic factors, all of which were measured using a scale with high reliability and validity. This study established univariate regression analysis and random forest model to screen for risk factors for high-level fear of cancer recurrence. Based on the results of the multi-variable regression model, a nomogram was constructed to visualize risk prediction., Results: Fatigue, social constraints, maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies, meta-cognition and age were identified as risk factors. Objective: To examine the association between vertebral cancellous Hounsfield units (HUs), age, bone mineral density, and T-score in a sample of Chinese adults., Methods: The study included a sample of 739 participants. Age, bone mineral density, and T-score of each participant were recorded, and HUs were measured in the L1-L4 vertebrae., Results: Data analysis revealed that HUs of vertebral cancellous bone across the pedicle level decreased with age, with women having higher values than men up to age 50 and vice versa thereafter. Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between HUs of vertebral cancellous bone across the pedicle level and bone mineral density/T-score in the L1-L4 vertebrae, but with a weaker correlation in the L4 vertebrae. Key Message: Four stable QTL for adult plant resistance were identified in wheat line Changwu 357-9, including a new QTL on 2AL showing significant interaction with Yr29 to reduce stripe rust severity. Stripe rust (yellow rust) is a serious disease of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) worldwide. Genetic resistance is considered the most economical, effective and environmentally friendly method to control the disease and to minimize the use of fungicides. The current study focused on characterizing the components of stripe rust resistance and understanding the interactions in Changwu 357-9 (CW357-9)/Avocet S RIL population. A genetic linkage map constructed using a new GenoBaits Wheat 16K Panel and the 660K SNP array had 5104 polymorphic SNP markers spanning 3533.11 cM. Four stable QTL, consistently identified across five environments, were detected on chromosome arms 1BL, 2AL, 3DS, and 6BS in Changwu357-9. The most effective QTL QYrCW357-1BL was Yr29. The 6BS QTL was identified as Yr78, which has been combined with the 1BL QTL in many wheat cultivars and breeding lines. The novel QTL on 2AL with moderate effect showed a stable and significant epistatic interaction with Yr29. The QTL on 3DL should be same as QYrsn.nwafu-3DL and enriches the overall stripe rust resistance gene pool for breeding. Polymorphisms of flanking AQP markers AX-110020417 (for QYrCW357-1BL), AX-110974948 (for QYrCW357-2AL), AX-109466386 (for QYrCW357-3DL), and AX-109995005 (for QYrCW357-6BS) were evaluated in a diversity panel including 225 wheat cultivars and breeding lines. These results suggested that these high-throughput markers could be used to introduce QYrCW357-1BL, QYrCW357-2AL, QYrCW357-3DL, and QYrCW357-6BS into commercial wheat cultivars. Combinations of these genes with other APR QTL should lead to higher levels of stripe rust resistance along with the beneficial effects of multi-disease resistance gene Yr29 on improving resistance to other diseases., (© 2022. Schizophrenia stands out as one of the most devastating psychiatric disorders. Previous findings have shown that schizophrenia is a polygenic genetic disorder. Thus, abnormal neurodevelopment and neurogenesis may be associated with the etiology of schizophrenia, so genes which affect these processes may be potential candidate genes of schizophrenia. Mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase 4 (MAP3K4) gene is a member of the mitogen-activated protein kinase family. Taking into account previous findings, MAP3K4 plays a crucial role in the fundamental pathology of various nervous system diseases. In the present study, we aim to explore the association of MAP3K4 and schizophrenia in an independent case-control sample including 627 schizophrenic patients and 1175 healthy controls from a Northeast Chinese Han population. Both the allelic and genotypic association analyses showed that 6 SNPs in MAP3K4 were significantly associated with schizophrenia (rs590988, rs625977, rs9295134, rs12110787, rs1001808 and rs9355870). After rigorous Bonferroni correction, 4 SNPs (rs9295134, rs12110787, rs1001808 and rs9355870) were still significantly associated with the disease. The haplotype composed of these four SNPs also showed significantly global and individual association with schizophrenia. Objectives: Freezing of gait (FOG) is a common and complex disabling episodic gait disturbance in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Currently, the treatment of FOG remains a challenge for clinicians. The aim of our study was to develop a nomogram for FOG risk based on data collected from Chinese patients with PD., Materials & Methods: A total of 379 PD patients (197 with FOG) from Kunming Medical University were recruited as a training cohort. Additionally, 339 PD patients (166 with FOG) were recruited from West China Hospital of Sichuan University, to serve as the validation cohort. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression model was used to select clinical and demographic characteristics as well as blood markers, which were incorporated into a predictive model using multivariate logistic regression to predict the risk of developing FOG. The model was validated using the validation dataset, and model performance was evaluated using the C-index, calibration plot, and decision curve analyses., Results: The final predictive model included the REM Sleep Behavior Disorder Screening Questionnaire (RBDSQ) score, Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ39), H-Y stage, and visuospatial function. The model showed good calibration and good discrimination, with a C-index value of 0.772 against the training cohort and 0.766 against the validation cohort. Background: Recent studies have reported an association between PPP2R5D mutations and early-onset levodopa-responsive parkinsonism, but this gene has yet to be analyzed comprehensively in a large Parkinson's disease (PD) cohort., Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the frequency and spectrum of PPP2R5D mutations in a Han Chinese cohort with early- or late-onset PD., Methods: The 5'- and 3'-untranslated regions as well as coding sequence of the PPP2R5D gene were sequenced in 668 patients with sporadic PD. Novel variants were detected and validated based on genomic databases, as well as verified using genetic data from unrelated controls. Sanger sequencing was used to confirm rare mutations found by next-generation sequencing., Results: Two of the 145 EOPD patients carried two novel, unique PPP2R5D exonic variants (p.R91S,p.R523L), while none was detected in late-onset Parkinson's disease (LOPD). The study was to compare the performance of the regression models and fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) models in analyzing the possible effects of sociodemographic variables (age and sex) and lifestyle behaviors (physical activity, sedentary time, sleep duration, physical education class and screen time) on depressive symptoms in adolescents. This cross-sectional surgery was conducted among 726 adolescents in Jilin Province of China, selected by random cluster sampling. The regression model showed that age, physical education (PE) class and sleep duration were associated with depressive symptoms. Meanwhile, the fsQCA models showed that shorter physical activity, PE class and sleep duration as well as longer sedentary and screen time were related to higher levels of depressive symptoms. Both regression and fsQCA models indicated that promoting lifestyle behaviors could affect depressive symptoms. Although lung cancer screening with low-dose CT (LDCT) can reduce lung cancer mortality by 20%, without an appropriate eligibility criteria, it may result in a waste of medical resources and a degree of unnecessary damage to participants' health. This study aims to give the optimal screening strategy in China based on cost-effectiveness analysis on pros and cons of different situations. From the perspective of primary healthcare system, a Markov model was built to simulate LDCT screening of 100,000 heavy smokers (>30 pack years) aged 40 in different situations. Model parameters mainly came from screening programs conducted in China and other countries, official public data, and published literature. Two indicators of primary outcome, incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) and net health benefits (NHB), were compared with those of no screening. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to evaluate model uncertainties. We defined the optimal strategy as the one with both acceptable cost effectiveness and maximal NHB. Base-case analysis results showed that for all screening strategies, ICERs were less than three times of GDP per capita. As for NHB results, it showed that when the willingness to pay for screening was less than three times of GPD per capita, the largest NHB was obtained in the strategy which started screening at 50 years old and this strategy showed stable performance in univariate and probabilistic sensitivity as well. Background: Demand for eye care has increased in recent decades in China due to rapid socioeconomic development and demographic shift. Knowledge of output and productivity of ophthalmic services would allow policymakers to optimize resource allocation, and is therefore essential. This study sought to map the landscape of ophthalmic services available in Shanghai, China., Methods: In 2018, a government-led survey was conducted of all 86 tertiary/secondary hospitals and five major private hospitals providing eye care in Shanghai in the form of electronic questionnaire, which encompassed ophthalmic services (outpatient and emergency room [ER] visit, inpatient admissions, and surgical volume) and service productivity in terms of annual outpatient and ER visits per doctor, inpatient admissions per bed, and surgical volume per doctor. Comparisons were made among different levels of hospitals with categorical variables tested by Chi-square analysis., Results: The response rate was 85.7%. The Eye and Ear, Nose, and Throat (EENT) Hospital was the largest tertiary specialty hospital, and alone contributed to the highest 21.0% of annual ophthalmic outpatient and ER visits (visits per doctor: 5460), compared with other 26 tertiary hospitals, 46 secondary hospitals and five private hospitals (visits per doctor: 3683, 4651 and 1876). The annual inpatient admission was 20,103, 56,992, 14,090, and 52,047 for the EENT Hospital, all the other tertiary hospitals, secondary hospitals and five private hospitals, respectively. Turnover rates were highest for the EENT Hospital and private hospitals. The average surgical volume at the EENT Hospital was 72,666, exceeding that of private (15,874.8) and other tertiary hospitals (3366.7). The EENT Hospital and private hospitals performed 16,982 (14.2%) and 55,538 (46.6%) of all cataract surgeries. Proportions of both complicated cataractous cases and complicated cataract surgeries at the EENT Hospital was the highest, followed by other tertiary and secondary/private hospitals (P < 0.0001)., Conclusions: In Shanghai, public providers dominate ophthalmic services especially for complicated cases, with almost one fifth of services provided by the EENT Hospital alone, while private sectors, though not large in number, still effectively help meet large proportions of eye care demand. Purpose: We sought to explore the relationships among social support, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and wound pain, and to examine whether social support would moderate the relationship between wound pain and HRQOL., Design: A multicenter descriptive cross-sectional study., Subjects and Settings: Individuals with chronic wounds attending wound clinics affiliated with 3 public hospitals in Beijing, China., Methods: Sociodemographic and wound characteristics of 162 participants were retrieved from medical records. Participants completed questionnaires for wound-related pain intensity (Numerical Rating Scale), social support (Social Support Rating Scale), and HRQOL (Medical Outcome Study Short Form-36). The moderating effect analysis was examined using the PROCESS analytic tool developed by Hayes, based on the bias-corrected bootstrapping method., Results: Results revealed that higher pain intensity was significantly related to lower HRQOL (P < .01), and higher social support was associated with better HRQOL (P < .01). However, there was no significant correlation between social support and wound pain (P = .55). Importantly, the moderating effect of social support on the relationship between wound pain and HRQOL was statistically significant (P = .008)., Conclusions: We found that social support moderated the impact of wound pain on HRQOL in patients with chronic wounds. To explore the association between phytoplankton community structure and water quality of the Tianhe Reservoir in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, we examined the phytoplankton and physico-chemical factors in the Tianhe Reservoir from February 2019 to January 2020. A total of 89 phytoplankton species belonging to 60 genera and 7 phyla were identified. The annual average abundance and biomass of phytoplankton were 2.02×10 5 cells·L -1 and 0.26 mg·L -1 respectively. Bacillariophyta was dominant in the whole year. Chlorophyta was dominant in spring and autumn. Cyanophyta was dominant in summer. Both Euglenophyta and Pyrrophyta appeared in the whole year. Cryptophyta appeared in autumn and winter. However, none of them was dominant due to their low abundance. The dominant species throughout the year were Melosira granulata , Synedra acus , Navicula cryptocephala , Asterionella formosa , Pseudoanabaena , Closterlum venus , Pediastrum duplex , Peridinium bipes , Dinobryon cylindricum and Cryptomonas ovata . Results of redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that water temperature, total nitrogen, COD Mn and pH value were the main factors driving phytoplankton community structure in the whole year. According to the evaluation based on diversity indices, including Shannon index , Pielou evenness index , Margalef richness index and comprehensive trophic status index (TLI), water quality of Tianhe Reservoir is between oligotrophication and mesotrophication.

The aim of this study is to explore whether the single nucleotide polymorphism rs2275294 in the ZNF512B gene is related to the length of survival of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This prospective study examined 212 patients with ALS, who were genotyped at the rs2275294 locus in ZNF512B using the ligase method. Genotype was compared with clinical data and survival. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox hazard regression were used to identify risk factors of shorter survival. Our results were meta-analyzed together with previous work in order to examine the potential association between the rs2275294-C allele and survival. Of the 212 patients, 166 carried the CC + CT genotype at the rs2275294 locus, while 46 carried the TT genotype. Patients with the C allele showed significantly shorter survival than those without it (34.13 ± 1.9 vs. 45.32 ± 5.7 months, p = 0.036). Cox analysis identified the C allele and time from symptom onset to diagnosis as risk factors for shorter survival. Meta-analysis of 447 patients in China and Japan confirmed the rs2275294-C allele to be an independent risk factor of shorter survival in ALS patients. The C allele at the rs2275294 locus in ZNF512B is a risk factor for shorter survival in patients with ALS.

Importance: Laparoscopic distal gastrectomy and neoadjuvant chemotherapy are increasingly used to treat locally advanced gastric cancer. However, the safety and efficacy of the laparoscopic procedure after neoadjuvant chemotherapy remain unclear., Objective: To evaluate the short-term outcomes of patients with locally advanced gastric cancer who received either laparoscopic distal gastrectomy or open distal gastrectomy., Design, Setting, and Participants: Between April 23, 2015, and November 16, 2017, a phase 2, open-label, noninferiority randomized clinical trial was conducted at the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center of Peking University Cancer Hospital and Institute in Beijing, China. Patients (n = 96) between 18 and 80 years of age with locally advanced gastric cancer (cT2-4aN+M0) who were receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy were enrolled and randomized. An as-treated population and a modified intention-to-treat (mITT) population were defined for the data analysis., Interventions: Patients were randomized to undergo either laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy (LADG) with D2 lymphadenectomy or open distal gastrectomy (ODG) with D2 lymphadenectomy., Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary end point was 3-year recurrence-free survival rate. Secondary end points were surgical radicality, 30-day postoperative morbidity and mortality, 2-week postoperative recovery indexes, and adjuvant chemotherapy completion status., Results: In total, 95 patients were eligible for as-treated analyses (LADG: 45, of whom 13 were female [29%], with a median [interquartile range (IQR)] age of 59 [52-65] years; ODG: 50, of whom 16 were female [32%], with a median [IQR] age of 61 [55-64] years) and mITT analyses (LADG: 47, of whom 14 were female [30%], with a median [IQR] age of 59 [52-65] years; ODG: 48, of whom 15 were female [31%], with a median [IQR] age of 61 [55-64] years). In the as-treated analyses, the LADG group had a significantly lower postoperative complication rate than the ODG group (20% vs 46%; P = .007). The postoperative visual analog scale score for pain was 1.2 units lower on postoperative day 2 only in the LADG group (95% CI, -2.1 to -0.3; P = .008). Patients in the LADG group had better adjuvant chemotherapy completion (adjusted odds ratio, 4.39; 95% CI, 1.63-11.80; P = .003) and were less likely to terminate adjuvant chemotherapy because of adverse effects (10 [22%] vs 21 [42%]; P = .04). The mITT analyses showed similar results to as-treated analyses., Conclusions and Relevance: This trial found that LADG appears to offer the benefits of better postoperative safety and adjuvant chemotherapy tolerance compared with ODG for patients with locally advanced gastric cancer who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02404753.

Maternal depression has been intensively explored; however, less attention has been paid to maternal suicide. No studies to date have observed maternal depression and suicide at immediate prenatal and early postpartum stages. In total, 213 Chinese women were recruited in hospitals after they were admitted for childbirth. All completed a short-term longitudinal survey at perinatal stages. Women reported lower depression scores (6.65) and higher suicidal ideation incidence (11.74%) after childbirth. Prenatal depression raised the possibility of prenatal suicidal ideation, while prenatal depression and suicidal ideation increased postpartum depression and suicidal ideation. At immediate prenatal stage, marital satisfaction protected women from depression, while miscarriage experiences and self-esteem increased the risk. At early postpartum stage, in contrast, being first-time mother, marital satisfaction, and harmony with mother-in-law prevented them from depression. Our study is among the first to confirm that women have decreased depression but increased suicidal ideation at early postpartum, and a causal relationship between them, which are worthy of public attention. Potential protective (marital satisfaction, being first-time mother, and harmony with mother-in-law) or risk factors (miscarriage experiences and self-esteem) of maternal depression and suicidal ideation are identified at perinatal stages. RTEL1 (regulator of telomere elongation helicase 1; OMIM 608833) gene polymorphisms were linked to lung cancer (LC) susceptibility in a cancer genome-wide association study (GWAS) Here, we assessed whether seven previously reported RTEL1 polymorphisms influenced LC risk in Han Chinese population. All study samples (554 LC cases and 696 cancer-free controls) were collected from the Affiliated Hospital of Xizang Minzu University in China. We assessed associations between SNPs and LC risk using various several genetic models (codominant, dominant, recessive, overdominant, and additive). Whereas rs2738780 showed a protective effect against LC (Odds ratio (OR) = 0.80 ;95% confidence interval (CI): 0.638 = 0.998; p = 0.048), rs7261546(OR = 4.16; 95% CI: 1.35-12.82; p = 0.007), rs6062299(OR=5.08; 95% CI: 1.43-18.10; p = 0.005) and rs3787098(OR = 5.10; 95% CI: 1.43-18.15; p = 0.004) were all associated with increased LC susceptibility (recessive model). Haplotype analysis suggested that ''CTC'' was associated with a 0.8-fold decrease in LC risk (OR = 0.80, 95% CI, 0.63-1.00; Pearson's p = 0.05). These findings suggest a potential association between RTEL1 polymorphisms and LC risk in a Chinese Han population.

Objective: To study the relationship between compliance with anti-hypertension therapy and assessment of quality of health care in hypertensive patients in community., Methods: According to multi-stage cluster random sampling, we selected two communities from 36 streets in certain areas of Shanghai respectively using random number method on May, 2013, 72 communities in total, then we randomly selected 25 patients who were archived in the community health center from each community of the street.We conducted 1 800 questionnaires in total in which 1 172 patients were under medication study. The Morisky Medication Adherence Scale was used to evaluate medication compliance while the Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care Scale was applied to measuring the quality of patient's self-reported health service. The Spearman rank correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between assessment of quality of health care for chronic illness and compliance with anti-hypertension therapy. Binary logistic analysis was applied to evaluate the factors which influenced patient's medicine compliance., Results: There were 567(48.4%) respondents with good compliance. Age less than or equal to 65 accounted for 43.3% (245 people) while age greater than 65 accounted for 56.7% (321 people). The average scores of total and difference dimensions remained at a low level, ranging from 1.97 to 2.67 out of 5. The Assessment of quality of health care score was (2.67 ± 1.33)scores, in which the highest score of the dimensions was patient activation which was (2.56 ± 1.41)scores and the lowest was follow-up / collaboration which was (1.97 ± 1.49)scores. The Spearman rank correlation analysis showed that negative association between accumulate points of patient medicine compliance and patient activation was found (rs = -0.09, P < 0.01). The result of binary logistic analysis indicated that medication adherence of age greater than 65 was 1.49 times (95%CI: 1.11-2.00) higher than age less than or equal to 65. The patient activation was a protective factors of good medicine adherence (OR = 1.35, 95%CI:1.14-1.59)., Conclusions: The medicine adherence of hypertension patients in community medication compliance is not very good at the moment. The self-rated quality of health care is still relative poor. Positive activation from interaction of physicians and patients can help enhancing patient's medicine compliance.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common cancer in the worldwide. Accumulated evidences indicate that genetic polymorphisms of human X-ray repair complementing group 1 gene (XRCC1) are associated with the susceptibility to HCC. This study aims to investigate the potential association between XRCC1 c.482C>T and c.1178G>A genetic polymorphisms and the susceptibility to HCC. A total of 1,069 Chinese Han subjects consisting of 530 HCC patients and 539 cancer-free controls were recruited in this case-control study. The created restriction site-polymerase chain reaction and directly DNA sequencing methods were utilized to analyze the genotyping of XRCC1 genetic polymorphisms. Our data suggested that the XRCC1 c.482C>T and c.1178G>A genetic polymorphisms were statistically associated with the increased risks of HCC [for c.482C>T, TT vs. CC: OR 2.05, 95% CI 1.26-3.32, P = 0.003; T vs. C: OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.04-1.51, P = 0.017; for c.1178G>A, AA vs. GG: OR 2.15, 95% CI 1.26-3.67, P = 0.004; A vs. G: OR 1.33, 95% CI 1.10-1.61, P = 0.004]. The allele-T and genotype-TT of c.482C>T and allele-A and genotype-AA of c.1178G>A genetic polymorphisms may enhance the susceptibility to HCC. Our findings indicate that the studied XRCC1 genetic polymorphisms may influence the risk of HCC in Chinese populations and might be used as molecular markers for assessing the risk of HCC.

Background: Patients with strabismus experience visual dysfunction, self-image disorders, low self-esteem, and social and emotional barriers, which adversely influence their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Currently no strabismus-specific questionnaire is available in China to identify patients' quality of life and to evaluate the effectiveness of strabismus treatment. The aims of the present study were to validate the Chinese-language version of the Adult Strabismus Quality of Life Questionnaire (AS-20) and to evaluate the impacts of strabismus on the quality of life among Chinese strabismus patients., Methods: Two hundred and fifty-five Chinese adults with strabismus, one hundred visually normal adults and one hundred patients with other eye diseases completed the Chinese version of AS-20. Psychometric properties of the Chinese AS-20 were examined by Cronbach's α coefficient, test-retest and split-half reliability, and construct and criterion-related validity. Independent-samples t test and one-way ANOVA analyses were conducted to explore the impact of demographic factors and clinical characteristics on HRQoL in Chinese strabismic adults., Results: The final AS-20 in Chinese (AS-C) included 18 items and two subscales: psychosocial (12 items) and function (6 items). The Cronbach's α was 0.908 for overall scale, with 0.913 and 0.808 for 'psychosocial' and 'function' subscales respectively, indicating high internal consistency reliability. The mean of the overall AS-C score among strabismus patients was 62.80 ± 18.94, significantly lower than that in visually normal adults (t = -18.693, P < 0.001), and in patients with other eye diseases (t = -5.512, P < 0.001)., Conclusions: The AS-C is a culturally appropriate tool to evaluate the HRQoL in Chinese strabismus adults. The psychosocial health well-being and overall quality of life in strabismic patients should receive greater emphasis.

Interleukin 17 (IL-17)-producing T helper (Th17) cells and CD4(+)CD25(+) regulatory T (Treg) cells are two new T-cell subsets that are thought to be critically involved in mediating and regulating autoimmune responses. The imbalance of Th17/Treg cells has been implicated in a wide range of autoimmune disorders. The aim of our study was to determine whether the Th17/Treg balance was abnormal in children with Henoch-Schonlein Purpura (HSP). We examined twenty-three new-onset HSP patients and eighteen healthy children. The frequency of Th17 cells and the IL-17 concentration were higher in HSP patients than in healthy controls. The frequency of Treg cells and the interleukin 10 (IL-10) concentration were lower in HSP patients than in healthy controls. Compared to healthy controls, HSP patients exhibited an increase in the ratio of Th17/Treg. The Th17/Treg ratio was positively correlated with the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), kidney lesions and the clinical symptom of the presence of more than two organ systems with lesions. However, the ratio had no correlation with anti-streptolysin O (ASO) or complement 3 (C3) levels. These results indicate that a Th17/Treg imbalance exists in HSP, and it appears to be closely related to the disease onset., (Copyright © 2013. Published by Elsevier B.V.)

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and the risk factors of prolonged QTc interval among Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes., Methods: The retrospective study included 3156 outpatients from the Diabetes Centre, the 306th Hospital of PLA, during the period from September 2003 to June 2010. QT interval was measured manually in the 12-lead conventional electrocardiogram. The QT interval corrected for heart rate (QTc) was calculated using Bazett's formula. Additional demographic and laboratory data were also collected. Potential risk factors of prolonged QTc interval were assessed using multivariable regression., Results: The prevalence of prolonged QTc interval among Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes was 30.1%. Height (OR 0.156, 95% CI 0.032~0.748), waist circumference (OR 1.025, 95% CI 1.010~1.040), diastolic blood pressure (OR 1.016, 95% CI 1.007~1.026), postprandial glucose (OR 1.040, 95% CI 1.022~1.059), fasting insulin (OR 1.014, 95% CI 1.003~1.025), and presence of microalbuminuria (OR 1.266, 95% CI 1.033~1.551) were significant risk factors., Conclusions: The prevalence of prolonged QTc interval among Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes is high. Risk factors for prolongation of QTc interval were low height, high waist circumference, increasing diastolic blood pressure levels, high postprandial glucose levels, high fasting insulin levels, and presence of microalbuminuria.
