Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) occurs due to damage of peripheral nerves, with healthcare professionals playing significant roles in PNI rehabilitation. This study aimed to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) towards PNI rehabilitation among healthcare professionals. This cross-sectional study was conducted on June 2023 in China and healthcare professionals were enrolled. A total of 611 valid questionnaires were collected, with 62.52% female respondents. Mean scores for KAP were 14.26 ± 2.044 (possible range: 0-19), 29.77 ± 3.622 (possible range: 7-35), and 41.55 ± 9.523 (possible range: 11-55), respectively. Multivariate logistic regression revealed positive associations of professional titles (OR = 1.743, 95% CI: 1.083-2.804), occupation (OR = 1.833, 95% CI: 1.151-2.919), and involvement in treatment or care of PNI patients (OR = 1.462, 95% CI: 1.024-2.088) with knowledge. Knowledge (OR = 1.155, 95% CI: 1.042-1.280), gender (OR = 2.140, 95% CI: 1.255-3.646), education (OR = 2.258, 95% CI: 1.131-4.507), and involvement in treatment or care of PNI patients (OR = 2.463, 95% CI: 1.460-4.155) were positively associated with attitude. Attitude (OR = 1.214, 95% CI: 1.148-1.283), bachelor's degree education (OR = 0.548, 95% CI: 0.326-0.919), master's degree or higher (OR = 0.545, 95% CI: 0.308-0.964), having rehabilitation training for PNI (OR = 2.485, 95% CI: 1.633-3.781), and involvement in treatment or care of PNI patients (OR = 2.093, 95% CI: 1.395-3.138) were independently associated with practice. Healthcare professionals exhibited moderate knowledge, positive attitudes, and moderate practices towards the PNI rehabilitation. Those involved in the treatment or care of PNI have significantly higher KAP. Purpose: To analyze retrospectively the sonographic characteristics of the peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) resulted from Wunchuan earthquake., Methods: The sonographic images of 38 patients with surgically proved PNIs were reviewed and compared with the surgical findings., Results: A total of 78 nerves in 38 patients were found injured in surgery, which included 16 median nerves in the forearm (20.5%), 6 ulnar nerves in the forearm or arm (7.7%), 8 radial nerves in upper limb (10.0%), 8 sciatic nerves (10.3%) in gluteal region, 17 tibial nerves in the leg (21.8%), and 23 peroneal nerves (29.5%). The most common injured nerve in the lower extremity was the peroneal nerve (29.5%) and in upper extremity was the median nerve (20.5%). Sonography correctly diagnosed 72 earthquake-related nerve injuries (92.3%), which included 5 complete disruption (6.4%), 4 partial disruption (5.1%), 63 nerve entrapment (88.5%, included 1 entrapment by bone calus, 38 entrapments by the scar tissue, 13 entrapments by the thickened muscle or tendinous arch, and 11 entrapment in the narrowed osteofibrous tunnels)., Conclusions: Nerve entrapment injury was the common sonographic finding in earthquake-related PNI., (Copyright © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Background: Few studies focus on the trauma-specific functional outcomes after surgical revascularization and risk factors contributing to poor outcomes in patients with acute blunt popliteal artery injury (PAI). The objective of this study was to investigate the long-term trauma-specific functional outcomes in patients with acute blunt PAI and identify the associated risk factors. Methods: There were 36 patients with acute blunt PAI who require surgical revascularization at a national trauma center of West China Hospital of Sichuan University between March 2010 and April 2019. After propensity matching, each patient was matched to one patient who did not have a concomitant vascular injury in control cohort. Functional outcomes were assessed with trauma-specific functional scores, physical examination of range of motion, nerve functional status and knee stability. A logistics regression model was established to determine the independent risk factors. Results: The 5-year (range 2–10 years) follow-up showed that 22 patients (22/36, 61.1%) had functional deficit due to limited activity or chronic neurological symptoms. Patients in vascular cohort had significantly decreased FIM score and AHFS score compared with matched patients without vascular involvement (P = 0.003 and P < 0.001), whereas there was no statistically significant difference in KSS (P = 0.136). Spearman correlation analysis of functional scores in vascular cohort showed that the FIM score was positively correlated with AHFS score (r = 0.926, P < 0.001), but not correlated with the KSS (r = − 0.007, P = 0.967). Additionally, there was significant difference in the range of motion of ankle between two groups (P < 0.001 and P = 0.034). Logistic regression analysis further demonstrated nerve injuries and compartment syndrome were risk factors for poor ankle function after surgery (OR 22.580, P = 0.036 and OR 12.674, P = 0.041). Conclusion: Most patients who sustained blunt PAI had significant functional deficit associated with limited activity and chronic neurological symptoms of ankle and foot, and poor functional outcomes were related to nerve injury and compartment syndrome. Therefore, early and effective decompression for compartment syndrome remains the only potentially modifiable risk factor for improving functional outcomes following PAI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. A case-control study was conducted to explore the effect of acupuncture combined with rehabilitation training on limb function and nerve injury rehabilitation in elderly patients with stroke. Methods. A total of 72 elderly patients with stroke treated from March 2019 to June 2021 in our hospital were enrolled as the object of study. The clinical data were collected and divided into two groups according to their different treatment methods. The patients cured with routine treatment combined with rehabilitation training were taken as the control group and the patients cured with acupuncture combined with rehabilitation training as the study group. The clinical efficacy was recorded, and the cognition and activities of daily living were evaluated by Terrell Cognitive Assessment scale, limb motor function score, and activities of daily living scale. The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) were employed to compare the neurological function before and after treatment. Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) and Disability Rating Scale (DRS) were adopted to evaluate the functional prognosis. The simplified Fugl-Meyer assessment of motor recovery score was employed to evaluate the limb function of the patients. The Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT) score was adopted to evaluate the functional rehabilitation effect of the patients. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was adopted to determine the serum neurological function indexes such as nerve growth factor, Smur100B protein, and glial fibrillary acidic protein. The cerebral blood flow (CBF), peak time, average transit time, and cerebral blood volume were measured by CT perfusion imaging, and the incidence of side effects during treatment was recorded. Results. Regarding the recovery of cognitive function and daily function after treatment, after treatment, the MoCA and ADL scores were increased, and the comparison indicated that the MoCA and ADL scores of the study group were remarkably higher compared to the control group (P < 0.05). With regard to the FMA-UE scores after treatment, the Fugl-Meyer scores were gradually increased, and the Fugl-Meyer scores in the study group were remarkably higher compared to the control group (P < 0.05) in the next two months. After 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, and 6 weeks of treatment, the WMFT scores gradually increased, and the WMFT score of the study group was remarkably higher compared to the control group. After treatment, the levels of nerve growth factor and S-100B protein were decreased, and the level of glial fibrillary acidic protein was increased. Comparison between the two groups, it indicated the improvement degree of each neurological function index in the study group was remarkably better (P < 0.05). With regard to cerebral hemodynamic indexes after treatment, 1 week after treatment, the CBF and average transit time of the observation group were remarkably higher compared to the control group, and the levels of cerebral blood volume and peak time were remarkably lower compared to the control group (P < 0.05). After 4 weeks of treatment, the cerebral hemodynamic indexes of the observation group did not change remarkably, and they were all lower than 1 week after the treatment. In the terms of side effects, 1 case of limb dysfunction, 1 case of swallowing dysfunction, 1 case of electrolyte disturbance, and none of infection in the study group, the incidence of adverse reactions was 8.33%. In the control group, there were 3 cases of limb dysfunction, 2 cases of swallowing dysfunction, 2 cases of electrolyte disturbance, and 3 cases of infection, and the incidence of adverse reactions was 27.78%. Compared between groups, the incidence of adverse reactions in the study group was lower (P < 0.05). Conclusion. Early use of acupuncture combined with rehabilitation training has a remarkable therapeutic effect on elderly stroke patients. It can remarkably promote the recovery of the patient's condition, remarkably enhance their neurological function, cognitive function, motor function, and daily life function, and effectively strengthen the patient's prognosis score. Background: The treatment of global brachial plexus avulsion is a demanding field of hand and upper extremity surgery. The recent development of functional and quality-of-life (QOL) assessment tools has improved quantifying these functional outcomes after surgery., Objective: We sought to combine Medical Research Council (MRC) grading with the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaires and Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) for pain to evaluate the functional outcome of patients who suffered complete brachial plexus avulsion before and after nerve transfers., Methods: The author carried out a retrospective review of 37 patients with global avulsion of the brachial plexus between 2000 and 2007. All of them underwent nerve transfers in Hua Shan Hospital in Shanghai. They were followed up for over 3 years for physical examination and responding to the questionnaires of DASH, NRS, as well as the satisfaction with the surgery., Results: The mean time to surgery was less than 6 months and the mean follow-up period was 4.59 years (range: 3-9 years). The effective motor recovery rate was 54%, 86%, 46% and 43%, respectively, in supraspinatus, biceps, triceps and finger flexor. Patients who underwent nerve transfers scored consistently better on the DASH score and NRS score than those before surgery. There was also a significant correlation between the change in NRS scores and patient satisfaction., Conclusion: This study validated the effect of nerve transfers for global brachial plexus avulsions from objective MRC grading combining with patients' self-assessments. Objective: To discuss the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral nerve injury in the earthquake., Methods: Fourteen patients with peripheral nerve injury injured in the earthquake were involved the retrospective study. All cases accepted the timely diagnosis and treatment including anastomosis and repair of the nerve and other conservative treatments. Then the therapeutic effects were observed., Results: All 14 patients got short-term follow-up and attained the improvement in their symptoms of nerve injury., Conclusion: Peripheral nerve injury has a high incidence in the earthquake. Prevention is very important. The timely and effective treatment should be taken according to spot situations and traumatic conditions of casualties in earthquake.

Background: Gastrodin (GAS), is a kind of phenolic compound extracted from the traditional Chinese herbal medicine Gastrodia elata Blume (GEB). This study was aimed at probing into the protective effect of GAS on peripheral nerve injury (PNI) and the underlying mechanism. Methods: A rat model with PNI was established, followed by intraperitoneal injection of GAS (20 mg/kg/day). Sciatic nerve function index (SFI) was used to analyze the function of sciatic nerve. The amplitude and latency of compound muscle action potential (CMAP) were examined by electrophysiology. Schwann cells (SCs) were isolated from fetal rats and treated with GAS 200 μg/mL, and H2O2-induced model of oxidative stress injury was established. EdU and Transwell assays were adopted to detect the viability and migration of SCs. Dual-luciferase reporter gene assays were applied to verify the binding site between miR-497 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) 3'UTR. MiR-497 expression was probed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). BDNF, neurofilament-200 (NF-200) and myelin basic protein (MBP) expression levels were detected by Western blotting. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, glutathione content (GSH) and catalase (CAT) activity in SCs were also measured. Results: GAS treatment could significantly increase the SFI and amplitude of CMAP, shorten the refractory period, and ameliorate muscle atrophy of the rats with PNI. GAS treatment could markedly restrain miR-497 expression and increase the expression levels of BDNF, NF-200 and MBP in SCs. BDNF was confirmed as the target of miR-497 and BDNF overexpression could reverse the impacts of miR-497 overexpression on the proliferation, migration, and oxidative stress response of SCs. Objectives: The surgical outcome of neurogenic tumours arising at the thoracic apex remains largely undefined. In this retrospective study, we compared the efficacy and safety of thoracoscopic surgery and thoracotomy for neurogenic tumours at the thoracic apex in 63 patients who received surgical treatment between 1992 and 2012 at our medical centre., Methods: Forty-four (69.8%) patients received thoracotomy (Group A) and 19 (30.2%) patients underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (Group B). Operative time, estimated blood loss (EBL), postoperative length of hospital stay and nervous system complications were recorded., Results: The two groups of patients were comparable in demographic and baseline characteristics except that Group A patients had a significantly larger tumour size (mean, 4.9 ± 1.0 cm) than Group B patients (mean, 4.1 ± 1.2 cm; P = 0.01). The mean operative time was markedly greater for Group A (120.2 ± 41.2 min) than Group B (93.2 ± 34.5 min; P = 0.009). Group A had significantly greater EBL (245.23 ± 197.78 ml) than Group B (117.4 ± 138.2 ml; P < 0.001). Total tumour resection was achieved in all patients and all neurogenic tumours were benign. The mean length of postoperative hospital stay was markedly longer in Group A (7.0 ± 2.1 days) than Group B (4.8 ± 2.0; P < 0.001). Postoperatively, brachial plexus injury was found in 1 patient (2.3%) in Group A and 4 patients (21.1%) in Group B (P = 0.026)., Conclusions: Though thoracoscopic surgery is associated with diminished blood loss, reduced operative time and shortened hospital stay, it has a markedly increased incidence of brachial plexus injury., (© The Author 2014. Abstract: Background and purpose: Over the last 500 years, the most earthquakes with 10,000 or more fatalities and the most overall fatalities have occurred in China. Physical therapists must develop a better understanding of the patient and injury types that they are likely to treat post‐earthquake disasters. This systematic review of Chinese and Western literature identified the primary patients treated by physical therapists post‐earthquake disasters for injuries that negatively impacted physical function, activity, and participation. Methods: Comparisons were made between reports of earthquakes in China and reports from the rest of the world combined. Results: Sixty‐seven studies of 71,986 patients (51.8% male) at 40.6 ± 15 years of age were included. Studies were mostly prospective (n = 48, 71.6%). Reports of earthquakes in China represented more recently occurring disasters (p = .003) and more prospective research designs (p = .003). Reports from China also had a higher median fracture number (p = .004). Studies from China used manual muscle testing (p = .02), visual analogue pain scales (p = .008), Barthel index or modified Barthel index (p < .0001), and joint motion assessment (p = .007) with greater frequencies. Discussion: Physical therapists from China are more likely to treat patients with a fracture; however, physical therapists from both regions are likely to treat patients with general injuries representing poly‐trauma to multiple body regions, traumatic brain‐closed head injuries, spinal cord injuries, peripheral nerve injuries, and soft tissue injuries. Implications on physiotherapy practice: These data can help improve earthquake disaster planning, infrastructure development, and resource needs assessment effectiveness. More prospective research study designs and more recent earthquake disasters in China are likely associated with greater explicit use of valid and reliable outcome measurements such as joint motion assessment, manual muscle testing, visual analogue pain scale, and the Barthel index or modified Barthel index. Digital skin defects resulting from trauma are often associated with dysfunction of the digital nerve and the extensor and flexor tendons in the affected fingers. The repair of these complex tissue defects requires a graft containing multiple tissues that can be used to reconstruct the tendons and nerves and restore the skin. Such procedures can cause multiple injuries and significant damage to the donor site. The current study used a novel technique to repair complex dorsal and palmar digital soft‐tissue defects. First, multiple tissues were cut and collected from the donor site. Then, part of the flexor carpi ulnaris tendon was transplanted to repair the tendon defect, and a medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve graft was used to repair the digital nerve defect. Finally, a skin flap was used to cover the skin defect. This paper reports on 31 cases of complex soft‐tissue digital defects, with defect areas of 2–18 cm2. One patient presented with a postoperative arterial crisis in the flap. All other patients recovered without experiencing a vascular crisis, flap necrosis, or wound infection. The postoperative flaps were similar in texture to the original digital skin. The sensation and the extension/flexion functions in the affected fingers recovered well. The effect on grip strength, wrist flexion, and forearm sensation was minor and the postoperative total active motion scores of the affected digits were good or excellent in 96.77% of the cases. The flap sensation recovery rate was also excellent in 83.87% of the cases. The present technique facilitates the repair of multiple dorsal and palmar digital soft‐tissue, tendon and nerve defects, reduces the damage to the donor site, and significantly improves the success of surgical repair. Aim: Prone positioning during general anaesthesia is one of the most difficult practices for the perioperative nurse. Patients in this position are vulnerable to many preventable complications. However, no studies have developed an evidence‐based tool to improve nursing practice during general anaesthesia and prone positioning. This study aimed to develop and test a general anaesthesia and prone position nursing checklist for use by the circulating nurse. Design: A prospective pre‐post study was performed between October 2020 and March 2021. Methods: The WHO checklist development model and evidence‐based methods guided the checklist development process. We prospectively observed circulating nurses that attended to prone general anaesthesia during posterior lumbar spine surgery for 3 months before and after the introduction of the general anaesthesia and prone position nursing risk checklist. The main outcomes were successful delivery of essential prone positional nursing practices during each surgery and the nurse's opinion of the checklist's efficacy and utility. Results: A general anaesthesia and prone position nursing checklist comprised of 4 pause points and 22 necessary nursing practices was developed. Seventy‐two nurses participated in this study. Use of the checklist significantly increased the average performance of essential practices during each surgery from 72.72%–95.45%. Three measures had a compliance rate of 100%. The delivery rate of 14 measures was significantly improved, 91.7% of nurses considered the checklist easy to use, and 94.4% nurses would want the checklist to be used if they underwent a prone position and general anaesthesia operation. Multimodal molecular imaging technologies have been widely used to optimize medical research and clinical practice. Bibliometric analysis was performed to identify global research trends, hot spots, and scientific frontiers of multimodal molecular imaging technology from 2012 to 2021. The articles and reviews related to multimodal molecular imaging were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. A bibliometric study was performed using CiteSpace and VOSviewer. A total of 4169 articles and reviews from 2012 to 2021 were analyzed. An increasing trend in the number of articles on multimodal molecular imaging technology was observed. These publications mainly come from 417 institutions in 92 countries, led by the USA and China. K. Bailey Freund published the most papers amongst the publications, while R.F. Spaide had the most co-citations. A dual map overlay of the literature shows that most publications were specialized in physics/materials/chemistry, and molecular/biology/immunology. Synergistic therapy in cancer, advanced nanotechnology, and multimodal imaging in ophthalmology are new trends and developing areas of interest. A global bibliometric and visualization analysis was used to comprehensively review the published research related to multimodal molecular imaging. Objective: The objective of this study is to observe the effects of mild mechanical stimulation on acupuncture points of spinal motor neurons and active substances of sciatic nerve injury in rats, and to explore the morphological basis for the recovery of motor function in rats with sciatic nerve injury, using mild acupuncture. Acupuncture in the local area of injury may cause further damage to the peripheral nerve injury. We believe that mild mechanical stimulation on the surface, using some specific acupuncture points can also have a positive effect on nerve repair. This method, called Chinese tuina, has existed for more than 2,000 years in China. Methods: This study establishes a rat model using sciatic nerve crush injury. Rats received Chinese tuina in accordance with the principle of the three methods and three points, once a day, for 20 days. The rats' status of hindlimb recovery was detected by a sciatic functional index. The labeled neuronal cell body was used to evaluate the fiber recovery after the rats' sciatic nerve injury, using a neural tracing technique. Our team studied motor neuronal cell bodies, CGRP-positive cells, and the microglia of damaged sciatic nerves which were stained with fluorescent triple staining, adopting a confocal multi-layer scanning technique, and then the changes in neuronal activity distribution and expression, and changes of time and treatment were described, using the method of morphological description. Results: Sciatic nerve injury decreased the survival rate of motor neurons, affected CGRP-positive cells, and activated microglia in the ventral horn of the spinal cord. Compared with the model group, the survival of spinal ventral horn motor neurons was increased through tuina intervention. The swelling of CGRP-positive cells was alleviated, and the degree of microglia activation was less than that of the model group. Conclusion: This study used visual morphological findings to assess changes in neurons and active substances with time after injury of the peripheral nerve, and demonstrated that peripheral mild acupuncture intervention improved the capacity of neurofibrillary axoplasmic transport, regulated microglia activation, and significantly promoted the recovery of sciatic nerve injury. Background: Traumatic brachial plexus injuries are severe lesions, and the incidence of these injuries has been increasing in recent years. Methods: The clinical data of 510 operated patients with brachial plexus injury recruited from 74 hospitals in Guangxi from 2004 to 2016 were retrospectively studied. Results: Our study included 447 males and 63 females, with an average age of 29.04 years. Traffic accidents were the most common cause of injury (64.71%), especially motorcycle accidents. Closed injuries accounted for 88.24% of cases, and 83.53% of patients had associated injuries, the most common of which were fractures (76.27%). The preoperative predictive value of root injury of MRI and CT was 74.71% and 71.28%, respectively. 44.71% of patients underwent an initial operation within 6 months after the trauma. Regarding the surgery, neurolysis alone, brachial plexus reconstruction, and free functioning gracilis graft accounted for 16.67%, 75.50%, and 4.51%, respectively. A total of 415 patients were followed up with an average time of 47.95 (25–68) months, and anxiety or depression were found among 81.20% of them. Two hundred seventy-six patients suffered from nerve pain, with mild pain present in 67.03% of patients. Additionally, 347 patients were followed up for more than 3 years, 76.81% of patients with C5-C6 injury recovery to useful function, and the procedure of neurolysis alone demonstrated the best efficacy (79.45%). Conclusions: Brachial plexus injury is still a challenging trauma for surgeons, and traffic accidents are the dominant cause. Timely and effective surgery is important for functional limb recovery. Purpose: We investigated the incidence and pattern of traumatic fractures resulting from motor vehicle collisions in a population of children and adolescents (≤18 years old) and to determine the risk factors for nerve injury.Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 734 patients admitted to our university-affiliated hospitals from 2001 to 2010.Results: This study enrolled 498 male (67.8%) and 236 female (32.2%) patients aged 10.9 ± 5.3 years old. The most common injuries were to pedestrians, and the most common fracture sites (438, 59.7%) were to lower extremities (n = 441, 60.0%). A total of 201 (27.4%) patients experienced a nerve injury. Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that age (P = 0.014), lower-extremity (P = 0.000), craniofacial (P = 0.000) and spinal (P = 0.000) fractures were risk factors for nerve injury. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that craniofacial [odds ratio (OR) = 9.003, 95% confidence interval (CI) 5.159-15.711, P = 0.000)] and spinal (experiencedOR = 10.141, 95% CI: 4.649-22.121, P = 0.011) fractures were independent risk factors for nerve injury.Conclusions: Patients in the 15- to 18-years old group and drivers had the largest sex ratio and highest frequencies of both nerve injury and early complications. Craniofacial and spinal fractures were independent risk factors for nerve injury. It is therefore important to focus on these risk factors to determine the presence of a nerve injury so that early, timely diagnosis and targeted treatment can be provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Stroke is the prime cause of morbidity and mortality in the general population, and hypertension will increase the recurrence and mortality of stroke. We report a protocol of a pragmatic randomized controlled trial (RCT) using blood pressure (BP)-lowering acupuncture add-on treatment to treat patients with hypertension and stroke.Methods: This is a large-scale, multicenter, subject-, assessor- and analyst-blinded, pragmatic RCT. A total of 480 patients with hypertension and ischemic stroke will be randomly assigned to two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group will receive "HuoXueSanFeng" acupuncture combined with one antihypertensive medication in addition to routine ischemic stroke treatment. The control group will only receive one antihypertensive medication and basic treatments for ischemic stroke. HuoXueSanFeng acupuncture will be given for six sessions weekly for the first 6 weeks and three times weekly for the next 6 weeks. A 9-month follow-up will, thereafter, be conducted. Antihypertensive medication will be adjusted based on BP levels. The primary outcome will be the recurrence of stroke. The secondary outcomes including 24-h ambulatory BP, the TCM syndrome score, the Short Form 36-item Health Survey (SF-36), the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), as well as the Barthel Index (BI) scale will be assessed at baseline, 6 weeks and 12 weeks post initiating treatments; cardiac ultrasound, carotid artery ultrasound, transcranial Doppler, and lower extremity ultrasound will be evaluated at baseline and 12 weeks after treatment. Objective The treatment of large mandibular cystic lesions (diameter > 35 mm) is controversial. Few studies determine the inferior alveolar nerve function after decompression which is one of the major options for treating such lesions. We aim to investigate the recovery of inferior alveolar nerve function after decompression. Methods Twenty-two patients with large mandibular cystic lesions, diagnosed as keratocystic odontogenic tumor, ameloblastoma, or dentigerous cyst, were included. Inferior alveolar nerve function was observed by monitoring the pulp vitality of involved teeth ( n = 64) with electric pulp test before decompression and 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 24 months after decompression, respectively. Results The pulp vitality of the involved teeth was significantly decreased before decompression. Recovery of pulp vitality could be observed after decompression, indicating the recovery of inferior alveolar nerve function. A majority (96.9%) of the vital pulp was preserved in the involved teeth after decompression. Conclusions Recovery of inferior alveolar nerve function was remarkable in patients with large mandibular cystic lesions after decompression, indicated by the recovery of pulp vitality of involved teeth. When decompression is preferred, conservative therapy rather than root canal therapy is recommended for the teeth with root tip exposed in the cystic lesions and without pulposis.
