English language acquisition is a major challenge for Chinese students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) cooperative educational programs. The general academic English courses in China serve as preliminary courses for future advanced Content and Language Integrated Learning with science and engineering in the programs. The present general academic English courses are often criticized for form-focused instruction and language skills training rather than focusing on developing cognitive skills and social awareness. Additionally, present English courses are faced with an excessive number of students and limited time and resources, thereby, constraining effective course implementation. This comparative research study investigated the effects of different instructional models (face-to-face, blended learning [BL], and flipped learning) in three groups of 100 Chinese undergraduate students each majoring in STEM. A quasi-experimental design and student engagement questionnaires were used for data collection. The Kruskal-Wallis test and an analysis of variance revealed a significant difference between experimental group 2 and the other two groups, while no significant differences were found between the first two groups. The findings indicate that flipped BL, along with modified teaching strategies and activities improved the participants' learning results and engagement levels.

This paper evaluates the role of advertising as information in designing platform search engines. Search engines and e-commerce platforms have substantial difficulty exposing new products to their users on account of an information problem: new products typically do not have enough sales or other user engagement that enables platforms to reliably assess product quality. This paper evaluates the role of advertising in providing information to the platform regarding new product quality so as to solve this "cold start" problem and to engineer higher quality organic listings. Using a large-scale experiment implemented at JD.com—a large e-commerce platform in China—we show that using ad propensity information for ranking new products benefits both the platform and consumers. Our findings showcase a new channel by which advertising can potentially improve outcomes for consumers and platforms in e-commerce through its ability to reveal information that can be used by platforms to improve search ranking algorithms. This paper surveys the extant literature on machine learning, artificial intelligence, and deep learning mechanisms within the financial sphere using bibliometric methods. We considered the conceptual and social structure of publications in ML, AI, and DL in finance to better understand the research's status, development, and growth. The study finds an upsurge in publication trends within this research arena, with a bit of concentration around the financial domain. The institutional contributions from USA and China constitute much of the literature on applying ML and AI in finance. Our analysis identifies emerging research themes, with the most futuristic being ESG scoring using ML and AI. However, we find there is a lack of empirical academic research with a critical appraisal of these algorithmic-based advanced automated financial technologies. There are severe pitfalls in the prediction process using ML and AI due to algorithmic biases, mostly in the areas of insurance, credit scoring and mortgages. Thus, this study indicates the next evolution of ML and DL archetypes in the economic sphere and the need for a strategic turnaround in academics regarding these forces of disruption and innovation that are shaping the future of finance. This case study examines the effectiveness of using negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) in the management of a hard-to-heal (chronic) wound with exposed ankle bone to reduce associated wound exudate and promote production of granulation tissue. A 60-year-old male patient who was able to attend wound follow-up diligently twice weekly for eight weeks, and weekly thereafter, was selected from a private hospital to take part. During each dressing change, the wound was cleansed with superoxidised cleansing solution, and minimal sharp debridement was performed. In the authors' opinion, the NPWT device used in this study is light and convenient for use in the community or home care setting. The NPWT wound dressing was connected to the NPWT machine via a connecting tube and the device then switched on using the default setting of a negative pressure of 125mmHg. Following the application of the NPWT device, the exposed ankle bone was successfully covered with healthy granulation tissue and healed within 20 weeks with minimal exudate formation in the wound. In the authors' opinion, NPWT is able to promote progress to wound healing; to minimise unnecessary dressing changes and, based on feedback from the patient, is comfortable to wear and when in use. Purpose: This paper aims to explore academics' perspectives on the quality of appraisal evidence at a Chinese university. Design/methodology/approach: An online survey with both closed items and open-ended questions was distributed among all academics at the university (n = 1,538). A total of 512 responded to the questionnaire. The closed items were initially analysed using EXCEL and SPSS; the open-ended questions were thematically analysed. Findings: The academics believed that the quality of student survey and peer observation of teaching were affected by subjectivity and the lack of understanding of appraisal. Academics also suggested that appraisals should be contextualised and the approach standardised. The study suggests the need for training that informs and engages relevant stakeholders to ensure the rigour of appraisal. Originality/value: The study raises the issue of quality assurance regarding appraisal data from the perspective of academics. It is based on the collaborative effort of academics in Australia, China and New Zealand, with the support of the management staff at the case study university. The study informs both appraisers and academics of quality assurance issues in appraisal. It also contributes to the literature, in that it initiates dialogues between communities of practices through collective questioning on the quality and mechanisms of appraisal in tertiary education.

Background WHO estimates that seasonal influenza epidemics result in three to five million cases of severe illness (hospitalisations) every year. We aimed to improve the understanding of influenza-associated hospitalisation estimates at a national and global level. Methods We performed a systematic literature review of English- and Chinese-language studies published between 1995 and 2020 estimating influenza-associated hospitalisation. We included a total of 127 studies (seven in Chinese) in the meta-analysis and analyzed their data using a logit-logistic regression model to understand the influence of five study factors and produce national and global estimates by age groups. The five study factors assessed were: 1) the method used to calculate the influenza-associated hospitalisation estimates (rateor time series regression-based), 2) the outcome measure (divided into three envelopes: narrow, medium, or wide), 3) whether every case was laboratory-confirmed or not, 4) whether the estimates were national or sub-national, 5) whether the rates were based on a single year or multiple years. Results The overall pooled influenza-associated hospitalisation rate was 40.5 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 24.3-67.4) per 100 000 persons, with rates varying substantially by age: 224.0 (95% CI = 118.8-420.0) in children aged 0-4 years and 96.8 (95% CI = 57.0-164.3) in the elderly aged >65 years. The overall pooled hospitalisation rates varied by calculation method; for all ages, the rates were significantly higher when they were based on rate-based methods or calculated on a single season and significantly lower when cases were laboratory-confirmed. The national hospitalisation rates (all ages) varied considerably, ranging from 11.7 (95% CI = 3.8-36.3) per 100 000 in New Zealand to 122.1 (95% CI = 41.5-358.4) per 100 000 in India (all age estimates). Conclusions Using the pooled global influenza-associated hospitalisation rate, we estimate that seasonal influenza epidemics result in 3.2 million cases of severe illness (hospitalisations) per annum. More extensive analyses are required to assess the influence of other factors on the estimates (e.g. vaccination and dominant virus (sub)types) and efforts to harmonize the methods should be encouraged. China has been consistently staking claim to the entire South China Sea (SCS) citing historical linkages. The consistent nature of these claims point towards the long-term nature of China's interests, from nationalism and reclaiming lost territories to commercial and geostrategic interests. The onset of COVID-19 in Wuhan in November 2019 and its transformation into a global pandemic witnessed a shift in China's foreign policy. The article analyses China's evolving geopolitical interests and recent geopolitical opportunism during COVID-19, by way of unilateral state-level administrative actions, completion of military infrastructure development, conduct of military exercises, aggressive military actions, and wolf warrior diplomacy, to gain operational advantage by changing the status quo in its favour in the SCS in order to subordinate other claimants and dominate the region. The avian immunosuppressive and neoplastic diseases caused by Marek's disease virus (MDV), avian leucosis virus (ALV), and reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) are seriously harmful to the global poultry industry. In recent years, particularly in 2020–2022, outbreaks of such diseases in chicken flocks frequently occurred in China. Herein, we collected live diseased birds from 30 poultry farms, out of 42 farms with tumour-bearing chicken flocks distributed in central China, to investigate the current epidemiology and co-infections of these viruses. The results showed that in individual diseased birds, the positive infection rates of MDV, ALV, and REV were 69.5% (203/292), 14.4% (42/292), and 4.7% (13/277), respectively, while for the flocks, the positive infection rates were 96.7% (29/30), 36.7% (11/30), and 20% (6/30), respectively. For chicken flocks, monoinfection of MDV, ALV, or REV was 53.3% (16/30), 3.3% (1/30), and 0% (0/30), respectively, but a total of 43.3% (13/30) co-infections was observed, which includes 23.3% (7/30) of MDV+ALV, 10.0% (3/30) of MDV+REV, and 10.0% (3/30) of MDV+ALV+REV co-infections. Interestingly, no ALV+REV co-infection or REV monoinfection was observed in the selected poultry farms. Our data indicate that the prevalence of virulent MDV strains, partially accompanied with ALV and/or REV co-infections, is the main reason for current outbreaks of avian neoplastic diseases in central China, providing an important reference for the future control of disease. In recent years, outbreaks of Marek's disease (MD) have been frequently reported in vaccinated chicken flocks in China. Herein, we have demonstrated that four Marek's disease virus (MDV) isolates, HN502, HN302, HN304, and HN101, are all pathogenic and oncogenic to hosts. Outstandingly, the HN302 strain induced 100% MD incidence, 54.84% mortality, and 87.10% tumor incidence, together with extensive atrophy of immune organs. Pathotyping of HN302 was performed in comparison to a standard very virulent (vv) MDV strain Md5. We found that both CVI988 and HVT vaccines significantly reduced morbidity and mortality induced by HN302 or Md5 strains, but the protection indices (PIs) provided by these two vaccines against HN302 were significantly lower (27.03%) or lower (33.33%) than that against Md5, which showed PIs of 59.89% and 54.29%, respectively. These data suggested that HN302 possesses a significant higher virulence than Md5 and at least could be designated as a vvMDV strain. Together with our previous phylogenetic analysis on MDV-1 meq genes, we have presently suggested HN302 to be a typical highly virulent MDV variant belonging to an independent Chinese branch. To our knowledge, this is the first report to provide convincible evidence to identify a pathogenic MDV variant strain with a higher virulence than Md5 in China, which may have emerged and circulating in poultry farms in China for a long time and involved in the recent MD outbreaks. Contagious ecthyma commonly known as Orf is a globally important, highly contagious zoonotic, transboundary disease that affects domestic and wild ruminants. The disease is of great economic significance causing an immense impact on animal health, welfare, productivity, and trade. Detailed analysis of the viral genome is crucial to further elucidate the molecular mechanism of Orf virus (ORFV) pathogenesis. In the present study, a confluent monolayer of lamb testicle cells was infected with the processed scab sample obtained from an infected goat. The presence of the virus was confirmed using polymerase chain reaction and electron microscopy, while its genome was sequenced using nextgeneration sequencing technology. The genome sequence of Malaysian ORFV strain UPM/HSN-20 was found to contain 132,124 bp with a G + C content of 63.7%. The homology analysis indicates that UPM/HSN-20 has a high level of identity 97.3-99.0% with the other reference ORFV strain. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that ORFV strain UPM/HSN-20 is genetically more closely related to ORFV strain XY and NP from China. The availability of the genome-wide analysis of ORFV UPM/HSN-20 strain from Malaysia will serve as a good platform for further understanding of genetic diversity, ORFV infection, and strategic development for control measures. International education is the third largest export industry in Australia and is worth almost A$20 billion. The last ten years have witnessed significant growth in both onshore and offshore enrolments of international students in Australian universities. The offshore component of all Australian universities has been subject to scrutiny by the external quality agency, Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA), since 2001. Many universities have closed offshore programmes after cycle one audit owing to poor management and quality assurance arrangements raised by AUQA. 2010 marks a significant change in international onshore education in Australia. Some of the changes that are having a real impact on international education include: (1) changes in government policy related to skilled migration; (2) policy changes relating to international student visas; (3) safety and security of international students following recent attacks on international students from India; and (4) ongoing scrutiny by the external quality agency with internationalisation as a mandatory theme in all quality audits of universities. The changes in Australian international higher education are a learning experience for many countries where tertiary education institutions are relying on international student income to survive, and planning for growth in an environment of changing government policies related to quality assurance, coupled with changing migration policies with a focus on reducing skilled migration. At the same time another challenge for Australian international education is the investment in education in key markets such as India and China, where the governments are planning to expand higher education with provision for overseas universities to open campuses in their countries. The renewal of quality in Australian higher education with the formation of the new national regulator, Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), may witness increased scrutiny of high-risk areas, such as internationalisation, which are related to academic quality and reputation of Australian higher education. TEQSA will have powers to place sanctions on all higher education providers including universities. International education, though attractive, has a somewhat turbulent nature. The end of the rainbow may not necessarily mean a pot of gold, but possibly "fool's gold"!

Background: The emergence of hepatitis B surface antigen in a patient with previously negative hepatitis B virus (HBV) serology post‐orthotropic liver transplant (OTLX) is known as de novo hepatitis B (DNHB). As there are no data on patients with DNHB available from Qatar, we aim to do a pioneer study indexing their clinical profile and epidemiology of patients with DNHB in Qatar. Materials and Methods: This descriptive epidemiological study was done by retrospectively reviewing records of 159 post‐OTLX patients. HBV serology of these patients post‐OTLX was reviewed, and 17 were identified as DNHB cases. Baseline epidemiological characteristics were defined and compared between DNHB cases and the rest. DNHB cases were analyzed statistically using the chi‐square test and Kaplan‐Meier curve. Results: The majority of the subjects were men (65%) and Qataris (40%). Mean age was 57.4 ± 12.5 years. Bulk of them underwent OTLX in China (44%). The overall incidence of DNHB was 10.7%, with transplants in China having significantly higher incidence than transplants from all other countries. The mortality rate was 23.5% in DNHB cases compared to 2.8% in non‐DNHB. 67% of patients survived at least 64 months after the diagnosis of DNHB. Five‐year survival did not vary significantly between those with DNHB and those without. Conclusion: Orthotropic liver transplant in centers selecting donors liberally without screening for HBV poses the risk of DNHB. We recommend having protective levels of HBs antibodies before OTLX. Prophylactic antiviral treatment should be considered until peri‐operative HBV transmission has been excluded by screening hepatic tissue for HBV DNA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper aims to identify the impact of economic integration on trade competitiveness and demonstrate its effects on trade and investment performance of member nations. Design/methodology/approach: The study compiles some price indices to provide a systematic assessment of competitiveness in the BRICS region. The panel regression framework estimates the impact of integration on trade competitiveness and the external sector performance of BRICS nations. Findings: The findings of the research highlight the prospects for strong, closer and sustained integration in BRICS and, more importantly, the contribution of competitiveness to FDI receipts and export growth. Research limitations/implications: The assessment of exports and investment experiences of BRICS nations, particularly China and India, provides further evidence in support of the logical design and strategic use of their foreign trade policies. Background: The ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) could recur as seasonal outbreaks, a circulating pattern observed among other preexisting human seasonal coronaviruses (sCoVs). However, little is known about seasonality of sCoVs on a global scale.Methods: We conducted a systematic review of data on seasonality of sCoVs. We compared seasonality of sCoVs with influenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus. We modeled monthly activity of sCoVs using site-specific weather data.Results: We included sCoV seasonality data in 40 sites from 21 countries. sCoVs were prevalent in winter months in most temperate sites except for China, whereas sCoVs tended to be less seasonal in China and in tropical sites. In temperate sites excluding China, 53.1% of annual sCoV cases (interquartile range [IQR], 34.6%-61.9%) occurred during influenza season and 49.6% (IQR, 30.2%-60.2%) of sCoV cases occurred during respiratory syncytial virus season. Low temperature combined with high relative humidity was associated with higher sCoV activity.Conclusions: This is the first study that provides an overview of the global seasonality of sCoVs. Our findings offer clues to the possible postpandemic circulating season of SARS-CoV-2 and add to the knowledge pool necessary for postpandemic preparedness for SARS-CoV-2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intracellular microsporidian Nosema mylitta infects Indian wild silkworm Antheraea mylitta causing pebrine disease. Genetic structure and phylogeny of N. mylitta are analysed using nucleotide variability in 5S ribosomal DNA and intergenic spacer (IGS) sequence from 20 isolates collected from Southern, Northern and Central regions of Jharkhand State. Nucleotide diversity (π) and genetic differentiation Gst were highest in the Central isolates whereas lowest in the North. Among the isolates, absence of nucleotides, transitions and transversions were observed. Haplotyping showed nucleotide variability at 83 positions in IGS and 13 positions in 5S rDNA. Haplotype-based genetic differentiation was 0.96 to 0.97 whereas nucleotide sequence-based genetic differentiation was higher (Ks = 22.29) between Southern and Central isolates. Bottleneck analysis showed negative value for Tajima's D and other summary statistics revealing induction of loss of rare alleles and population explosion. From IGS, 17 ancestral sequences were inferred by Network algorithm. Core of nine closely related nodes having ancient nucleotides and peripheral nodes with highly divergent nucleotides were derived. Most diverged peripheral haplotype was Bero (H11) from the Central region whereas Deoghar (H3) of the Northern region diverged early. Phylogeny of N. mylitta grouped Southern and Northern isolates together revealed weak phylogenetic signal for these locations. Phylogeny of N. mylitta with Nosema sp. infecting other lepidopterans clustered N. mylitta isolates with N. antheraea and N. philosamiae of China indicating genetic similarity whereas other species were dissimilar showing diversity irrespective of country of origin. The approach taken by the second place winner of the TRANSFOR prediction challenge is presented. The challenge involves forecasting travel speeds on two arterial links in Xi'an City in China for two five hour periods on a single day. Travel speeds are measured from trajectory information on probe vehicles from a fleet of vehicles for a large sub-area of the city. After experimenting with several deep learning methods, we settle on a simple non-parametric kernel regression approach. The method, borrowed from previous work in fixed route transit predictions, formalizes the intuition that in urban systems most failure patterns are recurrent. Our choice is supported by test results where the method outperformed all evaluated neural architectures. Cross‐cultural adaptation and validation of measures are necessary to provide evidence‐based educational intervention services among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) across countries. Language plays an integral role in the cross‐cultural adaptation and validation process of measures. Currently, there are limited validated tools in Chinese available to assess special education teachers' skills in functional behavior assessments and interventions in Mainland China to effectively support students with ASD. This study aimed to validate a Chinese version of the Skills and Needs Inventories in Functional Behavior Assessments and Interventions (SNI‐FBAI‐CN) in mainland China. The SNI‐FBAI, originally developed and validated in Singapore, in the English language, was translated, culturally adapted, and then administered to 239 special education teachers in two schools for children with ASD in China. Results show that the SNI‐FBAI‐CN has a three‐factor structure (i.e., skills in behavioral assessment, skills in behavioral interventions, and needs for training) that fits the data well, with good reliability for the overall scale, as well as the three subscales. Partial measurement invariance was established between the Chinese and the original Singapore samples, providing additional construct validity evidence for this tool. Countries around the world are taking active efforts to address the current climate crisis. Negative emissions technologies (NET) such as enhanced weathering will play a significant role in these efforts in the coming decades. Enhanced weathering is based on the terrestrial application of powdered natural or synthetic silicate minerals to remove carbon dioxide (CO 2) from the atmosphere. In the latter case, non-hazardous industrial waste (NHIW) can react with water and CO 2 from the atmosphere to achieve carbon drawdown through the acceleration of the naturally occurring weathering process. This approach also addresses the problem of sustainable industrial waste management. Besides, carbon drawdown also enhances soil quality for agricultural application sites. In the future, planning the large-scale implementation of enhanced weathering via carbon management networks can be facilitated by using optimization models. In this work, a source-sink model is developed for the proper allocation of NHIW to application sites. The method is demonstrated with a case study based at Shandong Province, China. Two scenarios are analyzed, with both achieving significant negative CO 2 emissions. The CO 2 sequestration rates for these two scenarios are determined as 12.73 Mt/y and 13.77 Mt/y, respectively. Scenario 1 shows that the system can achieve negative CO 2 emissions at a cost of $ 184.25/t CO 2 , which is comparable to previously reported cost estimates. Given the necessary input data, the model can be used to generate case-specific estimates for any country. Background. Cancer incidence and mortality is increasing in the developing world. Inequities between low-, middle-, and high-income countries affect disease burden and the infrastructure needs in response to cancer. We surveyed early-career oncologists attending workshops in clinical research in three countries with emerging economies about their perception of the evolving cancer burden. Methods. A cross-sectional survey questionnaire was distributed at clinical trial concept development workshops held in Beijing, Lahore, Karachi, and Mumbai at major hospitals to acquire information regarding home-country health conditions and needs. Results. A total of 100 respondents participated in the workshops held atmajor hospitals in the region (India = 29, China = 25, Pakistan = 42, and other = 4). Expected consensus on many issues (e.g., emergence of cancer as a significant health issue) was balanced with significant variation in priorities, opportunities, and challenges. Chinese respondents prioritized improvements in cancer-specific care and palliative care, Indian respondents favored improved cancer detection and advancing research in cancer care, and Pakistani respondents prioritized awareness of cancer and improvements in disease detection and cancer care research. For all, the most frequently cited opportunity was help in improving professional cancer education and training. Conclusion. Predominantly early-career oncologists attending clinical research workshops (in China, India, and Pakistan) identified needs for increasing clinical cancer research, professional education, and public awareness of cancer. Decision makers supporting efforts to reduce the burden of cancer worldwide will need to factor the specific needs and aspirations of health care providers in their country in prioritizing health policies and budgets. Background: Acute lower respiratory infections (ALRIs) are an important cause of acute illnesses and mortality worldwide and in China. However, a large-scale study on the prevalence of viral infections across multiple provinces and seasons has not been previously reported from China. Here, we aimed to identify the viral etiologies associated with ALRIs from 22 Chinese provinces. Methods and Findings: Active surveillance for hospitalized ALRI patients in 108 sentinel hospitals in 24 provinces of China was conducted from January 2009-September 2013. We enrolled hospitalized all-age patients with ALRI, and collected respiratory specimens, blood or serum collected for diagnostic testing for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human influenza virus, adenoviruses (ADV), human parainfluenza virus (PIV), human metapneumovirus (hMPV), human coronavirus (hCoV) and human bocavirus (hBoV). We included 28,369 ALRI patients from 81 (of the 108) sentinel hospitals in 22 (of the 24) provinces, and 10,387 (36.6%) were positive for at least one etiology. The most frequently detected virus was RSV (9.9%), followed by influenza (6.6%), PIV (4.8%), ADV (3.4%), hBoV (1.9), hMPV (1.5%) and hCoV (1.4%). Co-detections were found in 7.2% of patients. RSV was the most common etiology (17.0%) in young children aged <2 years. Influenza viruses were the main cause of the ALRIs in adults and elderly. PIV, hBoV, hMPV and ADV infections were more frequent in children, while hCoV infection was distributed evenly in all-age. There were clear seasonal peaks for RSV, influenza, PIV, hBoV and hMPV infections. Conclusions: Our findings could serve as robust evidence for public health authorities in drawing up further plans to prevent and control ALRIs associated with viral pathogens. RSV is common in young children and prevention measures could have large public health impact. In welcoming participants to Giant Prawn 2011, the authors briefly review the current scale of this component of global aquaculture. The expansion of freshwater prawn farming over the 30 years since the first global conference on this topic [ Giant Prawn 1980 ( GP1980)] is examined. At the time of GP1980, the output of farmed giant river prawns ( M acrobrachium rosenbergii) was <3000 t. Almost three decades later (2009) the total annual aquaculture production of all species of freshwater prawns had risen to almost 444 000 t, with a value of US$2.2 billion. The farmed production of M . rosenbergii constituted 51.7% of the global total, while the oriental river prawn M . nipponense (reared totally in China) contributed 47.2%. The contribution of the monsoon river prawn M . malcolmsonii remains quite small so far, and does not show in the above percentages because no recent FAO data are available for this species. In 2007, however, the latter species contributed 1.0% of the total global production of freshwater prawns. The major freshwater prawn producing countries are in Asia (e.g. Bangladesh, China, India, Myanmar, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam) but M acrobrachium spp. are also farmed in other continents. Emperor Shen-Nung was the second of China's mythical emperors (3500-2600 BCE). Widely considered the father of Chinese medicine, he catalogued over 365 species of medicinal plants which he personally tasted. Through his treatise 'Shen Nung Benchau Jing', we relive Emperor Shen-Nung's contribution to urology with reference to his management of erectile dysfunction. Time-related sources in medical and historical literature were reviewed, including the 'Shen Nung Benchau Jing' (The medicine book of Emperor Shen-Nung), archives and manuscripts at the Wellcome History of Medicine Collection, the Royal Society of Medicine, London, The Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, and The Museum of Medical History, Shanghai, China. Chinese traditional herbal medicine began approximately 5000 years ago. Agricultural clan leader, Emperor Shen-Nung, was said to have a 'crystal-like belly' to watch the reactions in his own stomach of the herbs he collected. Ginseng was among of Shen Nung's contributions to herbal medicine. He experienced a warm and sexually pleasurable feeling after chewing the root. He advocated this as a treatment for erectile dysfunction and used it to stimulate sexual appetite. The reputation of ginseng as an aphrodisiac is based on the doctrine of signatures, since the adult root has a phallic shape. Shen-Nung believed that ginseng's resemblance to the human form is proof of its rejuvenative and aphrodisiac properties. It was believed that the closer the similarity to the human figure, the more potent the root. The use of ginseng for erectile dysfunction by Emperor Shen-Nung was unique for its time. The importance of opportunistic pathogens in HIV disease has been demonstrated from the onset of the epidemic. This workshop aimed to review the evidence for the role of oral microorganisms in HIV-related periodontal disease and HIV transmission and the effect of HIV therapy on periodontal disease. Despite being a common copathogen, tuberculosis seems to have limited oral presentation. The oral manifestations seem to have little impact on the individual and, once diagnosed, are responsive to chemotherapy. The participants debated the available evidence on the role of microorganisms and whether further research was warranted and justified. Although the effects of lipodystrophy on facial aesthetics may be profound and may markedly affect quality of life, there is no evidence to suggest a direct effect on the oral cavity. Though of interest to oral health care workers, lipodystrophy and associated metabolic syndromes were thought to be further investigated by other, more appropriate groups. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Objective:To assess the association between fetal macrosomia and adolescent obesity.Design:Longitudinal cohort study of the association between macrosomia and adolescent obesity.Subjects:Between 1 October 2005 and 1 February 2007, a follow-up study of live-born infants born in 1993–1995 in Wuxi, a suburban area of Shanghai, was conducted. Subjects with birth weight > 4000 g were selected as the exposed. For each exposed subject, one subject with a birth weight of 2500–4000 g, matched by year of birth, sex of infant, and type of institute at birth, was chosen as non-exposed. Clinical data were collected by structured interview and physical examination. Obesity was defined as body mass index (weight (kg)/height (m2)) higher than the sex-age-specific criteria by the working group on obesity in China. Distribution of baseline characteristics and adolescent obesity rate between the exposed and non-exposed groups was compared.Results:A total of 1435 pairs of exposed and non-exposed subjects were included in the final analysis. No major difference in baseline characteristics (other than birth weight) was found between the exposed and non-exposed groups. Obesity rate was significantly higher in the exposed group (2.9%) than in the non-exposed group (1.6%). Adolescent obesity rates were 1.4, 1.9, 2.6, and 5.6%, respectively, in study subjects with a birth weight of 2500–3499, 3500–3999, 4000–4499, and 4500 g. The demand for fish maw (i.e., dried swim bladder) has apparently intensified during the past decades in Hong Kong and mainland China; currently, maw has similar annual import volumes but far higher mean unit values than other important seafood delicacies like shark fins and sea cucumber. Escalated demand for seafood delicacies can significantly contribute to the depletion of marine resources; yet a comprehensive understanding of maw value and the fisheries that supply it is lacking. We review available information on eight important maw-supplying species in major and largely undocumented source countries to examine the susceptibility and exposure of fisheries to the maw trade, which primarily serves Chinese demand. Comparing ex-vessel price ratios of maw to flesh (USD/kg), the overall mean price of maw can be as much as 72 times higher (range between 12:1 and 8389:1). Catch, price and export trends demonstrate that demand for maw is likely intensifying in countries already supplying it, shifting or expanding to new species, and emerging in new regions. We find that most maw-supplying species are under high fishing pressure, poorly or not protected. Those that yield the highest maw prices exhibit spawning aggregations, making them exceptionally vulnerable to overexploitation. While management interventions are needed to sustain fishery resources and capture economic benefits, their effectiveness will be challenged by the high value of maw. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The last quarter of the twentieth century was characterized by economic reforms in many formerly state-dominated economies. Among them, the reform attempts by China and India have attracted increasing attention in the popular media and academic research. This paper contribute to this research by using institutional theory to analyse the reforms in China and India and develop a framework to explain how reforms evolve. This study contributes to the theoretical understanding of the dynamics of reform, helps policy-makers to formulate reform strategy, and international business executives to project the developmental trends in two of the world's largest emerging markets. English language acquisition is a major challenge for Chinese students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) cooperative educational programs. The general academic English courses in China serve as preliminary courses for future advanced Content and Language Integrated Learning with science and engineering in the programs. The present general academic English courses are often criticized for form-focused instruction and language skills training rather than focusing on developing cognitive skills and social awareness. Additionally, present English courses are faced with an excessive number of students and limited time and resources, thereby, constraining effective course implementation. This comparative research study investigated the effects of different instructional models (faceto-face, blended learning [BL], and flipped learning) in three groups of 100 Chinese undergraduate students each majoring in STEM. A quasi-experimental design and student engagement questionnaires were used for data collection. The Kruskal-Wallis test and an analysis of variance revealed a significant difference between experimental group 2 and the other two groups, while no significant differences were found between the first two groups. The findings indicate that flipped BL, along with modified teaching strategies and activities improved the participants' learning results and engagement levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
