Aim: To explore the association between social capital and health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) and to determine whether depression mediates the association among Chinese older adults in the context of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Design: A descriptive cross‐sectional research design. Methods: The Geriatric Depression Scale‐15, Social Capital Questionnaire and 12‐item Short‐Form Health Survey were used to investigate 1201 older adults selected from Jinan, Shandong Province, China, using a multistage stratified cluster random sampling method. Results: Pearson's correlation analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between social capital and HRQoL (r = 0.269, p < 0.01). Multivariate linear regression analyses demonstrated that social capital was significantly negatively associated with depression (β = −0.072, p < 0.001) and that depression was associated with HRQoL (β = −1.031, p < 0.001). The mediation analyses showed that depression mediated the association between social capital and HRQoL, and the indirect effect size was 0.073 (95% confidence interval: 0.050, 0.100). Objective To investigate the role and mechanism of erythroid precursor cells (EPC) and its subtypes in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods The patients with AD (AD group) firstly diagnosed and treated in Qinghai Provincial People's Hospital from October 2018 to October 2019 were included, and olanzapine combined with donepezil were used for treatment; while 30 healthy volunteers were selected as the control group. The proportion of EPC, CD45+EPC and CD45-EPC in peripheral blood in control group and AD group before and after treatment was detected and sorted by flow cytometry. Primary cortical neurons were used to construct AD cells model, flow cytometry was used to detect the apoptosis of neurons in control group, AD model group, CD45+EPC group, CD45-EPC group and Artemin block group. Results There was no significant difference in the proportion of EPC in peripheral blood between AD group and control group, or between AD group before and after treatment (P > 0.05, for all). However, the proportion of CD45+EPC subtype (t = 7.277, P = 0.000) and ROS content (t =10.817, P = 0.000) in AD group before treatment were higher than those in control group. The proportion of CD45 EPC subtype (t = 7.277, P = 0.000) and Artemin content (t = 6.547, P = 0.000) were lower than those in control group, but there were no significant differences in proportion of CD45+EPC and CD45-EPC subtypes, ROS and Artemin contents before and after treatment in AD group (P > 0.05, for all). Neuronal apoptosis experiment showed the proportion of neuronal apoptosis in different treatment groups was significantly different (F = 25.662, P = 0.000). The proportion of neuronal apoptosis in AD model group (t = 9.330, P = 0.000), CD45+EPC group (t = 14.362, P = 0.000), CD45-EPC group (t = 2.423, P = 0.036) and Artemin block group (t = 9.970, P = 0.000) were higher than those in control group. AD model group (t = 4.548, P = 0.001), CD45+EPC group (t = 8.759, P = 0.000), Artemin block group (t = 5.387, P = 0.000) were higher than those in CD45-EPC group. CD45+EPC group was also higher than that in AD model group (t = 5.091, P = 0.000) and Artemin block group (t = 3.175, P = 0.004). Conclusions The proportion of CD45+EPC subtype in peripheral blood of AD patients was significantly increased and the proportion of CD45-EPC subtype was decreased. Introductionand Aim. Patients with cirrhosis are often hospitalized repeatedly for a variety of complications. This retrospective study aimed to assess the effects of minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) and Biejia-Ruangan (BR) on first hospital readmission in nonalcoholic cirrhosis patients without previous overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE) or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials and Methods. A total of 176 hospitalized patients with nonalcoholic cirrhosis were included in this retrospective study. Patients who were first admitted to Beijing Ditan Hospital of Capital Medical University from January 2017 to September 2019 were enrolled. The primary endpoint was their first liver-related hospital readmission. The risk factors for readmission were analyzed by Cox proportional hazard regression analysis. Results. A total of 176 nonalcoholic cirrhosis patients without previous OHE or HCC were included; 57 patients (32.4%) were diagnosed with MHE, and 63 patients (35.8%) were administered BR (2 g, three times a day). Multivariate analysis revealed that nonalcoholic cirrhosis patients with MHE (HR, 5.805; 95% CI, 3.007–11.206; x, P < 0. 001) and a higher Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score (HR, 1.145; 95% CI, 1.068–1.227; P < 0. 001) had an increased risk of first hospital readmission, and patients treated with BR (HR, 0.318; 95% CI, 0.151–0.670; P = 0.003) had a decreased risk of first hospital readmission. We investigated the association between plasma microRNA (miR)-204 and coronary artery calcification (CAC) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We consecutively enrolled 179 individuals with T2DM who underwent coronary computed tomography at Anzhen Hospital from January 2015 to September 2016. The CAC score (CACS) was expressed in Agatston units and >10 Hounsfield units were defined as CAC-positive status. Significant CAC was observed in 98 (54.7%) patients. Plasma miR-204 levels (relative expression) were significantly lower in patients with significant CAC than controls (1.001 ± 0.100 vs 0.634 ± 0.211, P <.001). Plasma miR-204 levels were also negatively correlated with the glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level (r = −0.702, P <.001), CACS (r = −0.710, P <.001), and the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) score (r = −0.355, P <.001). After multivariate logistic analyses, plasma miR-204 levels were still significantly and independently associated with the presence of CAC (odds ratio = 0.103, CI = 0.018-0.583, P <.001) after adjustment for conventional risk factors. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that plasma miR-204 levels can predict the severity and extent of CAC, and the specificity was higher than that of the traditional risk factors UKPDS score and HbA1c. Background: Paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia is a spectrum of involuntary dyskinetic disorders with high clinical and genetic heterogeneity. Mutations in proline-rich transmembrane protein 2 have been identified as the major pathogenic factor.Objectives: We analyzed 600 paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia patients nationwide who were identified by the China Paroxysmal Dyskinesia Collaborative Group to summarize the clinical phenotypes and genetic features of paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia in China and to provide new thoughts on diagnosis and therapy.Methods: The China Paroxysmal Dyskinesia Collaborative Group was composed of departments of neurology from 22 hospitals. Clinical manifestations and proline-rich transmembrane protein 2 screening results were recorded using unified paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia registration forms. Genotype-phenotype correlation analyses were conducted in patients with and without proline-rich transmembrane protein 2 mutations. High-knee exercises were applied in partial patients as a new diagnostic test to induce attacks.Results: Kinesigenic triggers, male predilection, dystonic attacks, aura, complicated forms of paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia, clustering in patients with family history, and dramatic responses to antiepileptic treatment were the prominent features in this multicenter study. Clinical analysis showed that proline-rich transmembrane protein 2 mutation carriers were prone to present at a younger age and have longer attack duration, bilateral limb involvement, choreic attacks, a complicated form of paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia, family history, and more forms of dyskinesia. The new high-knee-exercise test efficiently induced attacks and could assist in diagnosis.Conclusions: We propose recommendations regarding diagnostic criteria for paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia based on this large clinical study of paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia. Background: The GC haplotype of the vitamin D binding protein (encoded by the GC gene) might be a risk factor to the vitamin D (VD) nutritional status for many populations, while evidences from the Chinese Han population are sparse. We test the association between vitamin D binding protein genotypes and VD status as well as the metabolic parameters of glucose and lipids in a Han Chinese population. Methods: In a cross-sectional study conducted at a health examination centre (registered in ClinicalTrials.gov as QLS2013), 2641 adults were included and grouped according to their plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) concentrations as VD deficient (VDD), insufficient (VDI), or sufficient (VDS). The rs7041 and rs4588 genotypes were analysed with a molecular beacon-based qPCR method using blood samples. Results: Plasma 25OHD concentrations were lower in the GC2/2, rs7041T/T, and rs4588A/A genotypes than the GC1f/1s, rs7041G/T, and rs4588C/C genotypes (P < 0.05). After adjusting for confounders, the GC2 haplotype increased the risk of low VD status (P < 0.05) in both genders. More genotypic models revealed the negative contributions of rs4588A than rs7041T to low VD status (P < 0.05). The combined rates of VDD and VDI were 80.2% in males and 86.1% in females. Compared with VDI, VDS, or both, VDD showed higher plasma concentrations of fasting blood glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides in males (P < 0.05); however, no significant differences were found with regard to these parameters between the subgroups defined by the GC genotypes (P > 0.05). Conclusions: In a Han Chinese population, the GC2 haplotype or more exactly rs4588A is a risk factor for low VD status but is not associated with glucose and lipid metabolic disorders, which are inversely correlated with the circulating 25OHD concentration in males. We assessed the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) risk factors with a focus on their clustering among healthy adults in Shenzhen, China. Data from the 2011 China Health and Nutrition Survey, comprising a regionally representative sample of 806 healthy adults aged 35 years or older, were obtained to determine the prevalence of five risk factors for NCDs. The prevalence of current smoking, central obesity, impaired fasting glucose, borderline hypertension, and borderline high total cholesterol was 19.97%, 28.29%, 4.47%, 10.55%, and 36.10%, respectively. A total 63.77% of participants had at least one risk factor. Upon examination of risk factor clustering, we observed that 7.57% of participants had at least three risk factors. Using this threshold as a cutoff, clustering of risk factors was associated with sex [odds ratio ( OR ) = 3.336, 95% confidence interval ( CI ): 1.782 to 6.246], physical activity ( OR = 1.913, 95% CI : 1.009 to 3.628), and BMI ( OR = 7.376, 95% CI : 3.812 to 14.270). Unlabelled: Hypertriglyceridemic waist (HW) phenotype was associated with an atherogenic lipid profile in adolescents. But unlike adults, the cutoffs of waist circumference are age- and gender-specific standards and are less feasible for non-professional use. The present study tested the hypothesis that simple variables, such as waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and serum triacylglycerol (TG) concentrations, could be used as screening tools for the identification of adolescents characterized by atherogenic lipid profile. In 2006, anthropometric and biochemical measurements were assessed in a cross-sectional population-based study of 3136 Han adolescents, aged 13-17 years. The hypertriglyceridemic waist-to-height ratio (HWHtR) phenotype was defined as serum TG concentrations ≥1.47 mmol/L and WHtR ≥0.48 for boys and ≥0.46 for girls. Hypercholesterolemia (total cholesterol ≥5.18 mmol/L), high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C ≥3.37 mmol/L), low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C <1.03 mmol/L), and high non-HDL-C (≥3.76 mmol/L) were considered as atherogenic lipid profiles. After control for age and sex, adolescents with the HWHtR phenotype were more likely to have hypercholesterolemia (odds ratio (OR) = 7.8, 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 3.5-17.3, P < 0.001), high LDL-C (OR = 9.4, 95 % CI = 2.8-31.2, P < 0.001), low HDL-C (OR = 10.8, 95 % CI = 6.9-17.0, P < 0.001), and high non-HDL-C (OR = 22.9, 95 % CI = 10.0-52.2, P < 0.001) than those adolescents with normal WHtR and normal serum TG concentrations.Conclusion: The present study demonstrates that HWHtR phenotype is a simple marker for identifying adolescents with atherogenic lipid profile. Aims: It is well-established that lipid disorder is an important cardiovascular risk factor, and failure to reach optimal lipid levels significantly contributes to the residual cardiovascular risks. However, limited information is available on the management and the attainment of recommended cholesterol targets in real-world practice in China. Methods and Results: A nationally representative sample of 12,040 patients with dyslipidemia from 19 provinces and 84 hospitals across China were consecutively enrolled in this survey. Risk stratification and individual cholesterol target was established for all participants. This survey identified a high-risk cohort, with over 50% of patients had hypertension, 37.5% had coronary artery disease, and more than 30% had peripheral artery disease. Thirty-nine percent of all participants received lipid lowering medications. And the majority of them (94.5%) had statins (42.5% with atorvastatin, 29.0% with simvastatin, and 15.2% with rosuvastatin). However, the overall attainment for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) target is low (25.8%), especially, in female (22.2%), and in patients with increased body mass index (BMI) (38.3% for BMI<18.5, 28.1% for BMI 18.5–24.9, 26.0% for BMI 25.0–29.9, and 17.4% for BMI≥30, P<0.0001). Subgroup analysis also showed the attainment is significantly lower in patients who were stratified into high (19.9%) and very high (21.1%) risk category. In logistic regression analysis, eight factors (BMI, gender, coronary artery disease, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, hypertension, family history of premature coronary artery disease and current smoking) were identified as independent predictors of LDL-C attainment. Conclusions: Despite the proven benefits of lipid-lowering therapies, current management of dyslipidemia continues to be unsatisfied. A considerable proportion of patients failed to achieve guideline-recommended targets in China, and this apparent treatment gap was more pronounced among patients with increased BMI, higher risk stratification and women. Abstract: Neopicrorhiza scrophulariiflora Pennel (Hong) (Scrophulariaceae) is an endangered medicinal plant, endemic to the Eastern Himalayas and the Hengduan Mountains. Levels of genetic variation and genetic structure of seven populations of N. scrophulariiflora in China were studied using inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. Thirteen primers amplified 82 total loci from 7 populations composed of 136 individuals. All 82 loci were polymorphic, showing a percentage of polymorphic bands (PPB) of 100%, indicating considerable genetic variation at the species level. In contrast, a low level of genetic diversity within populations was detected with a mean PPB of 30.56%. In addition, Nei’s genetic diversity analysis (0.4073) and Shannon’s diversity index (0.5917) revealed similar genetic structure. High levels of genetic differentiation (Gst = 0.6955) and restricted gene flow (Nm = 0.2198) among populations were also detected. Anthropologic impacts, together with clonal propagation, genetic drift and geographical isolation might be the reasons which had shaped the genetic structure of this species. The article presents a study on the genotyping, carrier testing, and prenatal diagnosis of patients with spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) pedigree in northeastern China. The study used DNA isolation and DNA analysis with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in patients with SCA. Results showed that there were patients who have larger pedigree of a family with SCA3/Machado-Joseph disease (MJD), a neurodegenerative disease, by applying PCR and sequencing analysis.

This study explores the ecological restoration effects of the conversion of cropland to forage legumes on soil characteristics in the semi-arid Loess Plateau of China. Four types of treatments: fallow (F); alfalfa (Medicago sativa) forage legume (A); sweetclover (Melilotus officinalis) forage legume followed by fallow (SF) and erect milkvetch (Astragalus adsurgens) forage legume (E) were used to substitute for spring wheat, the native crop in April 2003 to October 2005. The results indicated that the highest soil water content in various soil layers was observed in F treatment during the whole experimental period, followed by SF treatments. The light fraction of organic C (LFOC) and increase of soil water content in SF was the highest. The above-ground biomass in SF was lower than that in E but higher than that in A and F. The total organic carbon (TOC) content in F and SF was higher than that in the other two treatments. But the total nitrogen (TN) content in F and SF was lower than that in A and E. Over the entire experimental period, the water use efficiency (WUE) of E was higher than that of A, SF and F by 70.02%, 42.05%, and 36.80%, respectively. Amomum tsao-ko and Amomum paratsaoko are well known medicinal and edible plants with a strong fragrance and flavour in China. Here, we have sequenced the two complete chloroplast genomes of Amomum tsao-ko and Amomum paratsaoko, which are 163,612 bp and 163,487 bp in length, respectively, and exhibited LSC and SSC regions separated by a pair of inverted repeat regions. The cp genome of A. tsao-ko has 120 annotated genes, including 82 protein-coding genes, while A. paratsaoko has 121 annotated genes, including 83 protein-coding genes. Both cp genomes contained 30 tRNA genes and 8 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis using a total chloroplast genome DNA sequence of 28 species revealed a close relationship between A. tsao-ko and A. paratsaoko with 100% bootstrap value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to identify the potential risk factors of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among Chinese schoolchildren. A cross-sectional study among 624 children (357 boys and 267 girls, aged 9.6 ± 0.7 years) was conducted in Wuhan, China, from May to June 2010. MetS was defined according to the criteria proposed by De Ferranti and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. Data on cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), household income, parental hypertension, and children’s personal information, including birth weight, preterm birth, and breast-feeding, reported by their parents were obtained. Multiple logistic regression showed that CRF (odds ratio [OR] = 0.68; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.60-0.77), breast-feeding (OR = 0.32; 95% CI = 0.10-0.97), and paternal hypertension (OR = 5.06; 95% CI = 1.20-21.37) were all independently associated with MetS. Objectives: To cross-sectionally explore the potential risk factors for rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in a community cohort in Shanghai.Methods: Based on the validated RBD screening questionnaire (RBDSQ), we identified individuals with probable RBD (pRBD) in 3635 community-dwelling residents (≥50 years old) from an urban community of Shanghai. Potential risk factors of pRBD, including age, sex, smoking, socioeconomic status, obesity, consumption of tea (surrogate for caffeine intake) and alcohol, medications and chronic disease status, were assessed via questionnaire. We used logistic regression to investigate the associations between these studied factors and pRBD after adjusting for age, sex and other studied factors.Results: Based on the RBDSQ score ≥5, 2.70% (3.28% in men and 2.41% in women) participants were considered as pRBD. We found that lower education, presence of head injury, atrial fibrillation, hyperlipidemia, constipation, olfactory disturbance, and imbalance, use of alcoholic beverage, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and benzodiazepine were associated with higher likelihood of having pRBD (P < 0.05 for all). In contrast, male sex, use of coffee or tea, smoking and other factors were not significantly association with altered risk of having pRBD. We did not find significant interaction between sex, age and these factors, in relation to pRBD risk.Conclusions: In this community-based study of older adults, we identified several potential risk factors for concurrent pRBD, including environmental factors and vascular risk factors. • A pH 5.8–5.9 was key point for soymilk coagulation induced by organic acids in FYW. • The precipitation sequence of protein subunits was investigated using proteomics. • 7S α and 7S α' aggregated more slowly than did the other subunits as pH declined. • Isoflavone aglycones precipitated more together with proteins than did glycosides. This study investigated the soymilk coagulation induced by fermented yellow whey (FYW), which is extensively used as a natural tofu coagulant in China. The aggregations involving proteins and isoflavone particles caused by FYW were analyzed using the proteomic technology and high-performance liquid chromatography, respectively. As indicated, the FYW-induced coagulation of soy proteins mainly occurred at pH 5.80–5.90. When the pH of soymilk decreased, the 7S β, 11S A3 and some of 11S A1a subunits and SBP, Bd, lectin and TA aggregated the earliest, and later did the 11S A4, other 11S A1a, 11S A2 and 11S A1b subunits. The 7S α and α' subunits and TB showed an obvious delay in aggregation. Moreover, isoflavones in the form of aglycones were more likely to coprecipitate with proteins, compared with glycosides. Abstract: To determine whether the commercial foods were irradiated or not, an investigation was carried out in this study. One hundred and thirty-three commercial foods, including 33 spices, 20 dehydrated vegetables, 64 dehydrated fruits, and 16 pollens were tested by thermoluminescence (TL) method. The results showed 30 of them (22.6% of all tested samples) were proved to be irradiated. Our investigation provided a primary data for the regulation of irradiated food in China. Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the role of cardiopulmonary exercise test parameters, especially peak oxygen uptake (VO 2peak ), in predicting the incidence of adverse cardiovascular events in older Chinese patients with coronary heart disease (CHD)., Methods: Older patients with CHD who underwent cycle ergometer cardiopulmonary exercise test at the Cardiac Rehabilitation Clinic of Chinese PLA General Hospital from July 1, 2015 to January 31, 2020 were enrolled. The follow-up intervals were 6 mo. Cox regression was used to analyze the relationship between VO 2peak and adverse cardiovascular events. Restricted cubic splines and subgroup analyses were used to observe the relationship between VO 2peak and the hazard ratio (HR) of the primary end point event (PEE), which included a composite of all-cause death, nonfatal recurrent myocardial infarction, unscheduled revascularization, and stroke. The composite end point event was the PEE combined with cardiac rehospitalization., Results: A total of 1223 participants (mean age 68 ± 5 yr) were included. Median follow-up was 68 mo. Mean VO 2peak was 16.5 ± 4.0 mL/kg/min, and VO 2peak was an independent predictor of the PEE (HR = 0.929; 95% CI, 0.891-0.970; P = .001). Objective: To assess the role of Machine Learning (ML) in identification critical factors of dementia and mild cognitive impairment., Methods: 371 elderly individuals were ultimately included in the ML analysis. Demographic information (including gender, age, parity, visual acuity, auditory function, mobility, and medication history) and 35 features from 10 assessment scales were used for modeling. Five machine learning classifiers were used for evaluation, employing a procedure involving feature extraction, selection, model training, and performance assessment to identify key indicative factors., Results: The Random Forest model, after data preprocessing, Information Gain, and Meta-analysis, utilized three training features and four meta-features, achieving an area under the curve of 0.961 and a accuracy of 0.894, showcasing exceptional accuracy for the identification of dementia and mild cognitive impairment., Conclusions: ML serves as a identification tool for dementia and mild cognitive impairment. Objective: To explore the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the vitamin D receptor gene ( VDR ) with circulating lipids considering gender differences., Methods: Of the Han Chinese adults recruited from a health examination center for inclusion in the study, the circulating lipids, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD), and other parameters were measured. The VDR SNPs of Cdx2 (rs11568820), Fok1 (rs2228570), Apa1 (rs7975232), and Taq1 (rs731236) were genotyped with a qPCR test using blood DNA samples, and their associations with lipids were analyzed using logistic regression., Results: In the female participants ( n = 236 with dyslipidemia and 888 without dyslipidemia), multiple genotype models of Fok1 indicated a positive correlation of B (not A) alleles with LDLC level ( P < 0.05). In the male participants ( n = 299 with dyslipidemia and 564 without dyslipidemia), the recessive model of Cdx2 and the additive and recessive models of Fok1 differed ( P < 0.05) between the HDLC-classified subgroups, respectively, and Fok1 BB and Cdx2 TT presented interactions with 25OHD in the negative associations with HDLC ( P < 0.05)., Conclusion: In the Chinese Han adults included in the study, the Fok1 B-allele of VDR was associated with higher LDLC in females, and the Fok1 B-allele and the Cdx2 T-allele of VDR were associated with lower HDLC in males. This study explores the emulsifying material basis of Angelicae Sinensis Radix volatile oil (ASRVO) based on partial least squares (PLS) method and hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) value.The turbidity of ASRVO emulsion samples from Gansu,Yunnan,and Qinghai was determined and the chemical components in the emulsion were analyzed by GC-MS.The PLS model was established with the chemical components as the independent variable and the turbidity as the dependent variable and evaluated with indexes R~2X and R~2Y.The chemical components which were in positive correlation with the turbidity were selected and the HLB values were calculated to determine the emulsification material basis of ASRVO.The PLS models for the 81 emulsion samples had high R~2X and R~2Y values,which showed good fitting ability.Seven chemical components,2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol,trans-ligustilide,3-butylidene-1(3H)-isobenzofuranone,dodecane,1-methyl-4-(1-methylethylidene)-cyclohexene,trans-beta-ocimene,and decane,had positive correlation with turbidity.Particularly,the HLB value of 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol was 4.4,which was the HLB range of surfactants to be emulsifiers and 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol was positively correlated with turbidity of the ASRVO emulsion samples from the main producing area.Therefore,2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol was the emulsifying material basis of ASRVO.The selected emulsifying substances can lay a foundation for exploring the emulsification mechanism and demulsification solution of ASRVO.

A novel sulphate-reducing, Gram-stain-negative, anaerobic strain, isolate XJ01 T , recovered from production fluid at the LiaoHe oilfield, PR China, was the subject of a polyphasic study. The isolate together with Desulfovibrio oxamicus NCIMB 9442 T and Desulfovibrio termitidis DSM 5308 T formed a distinct, well-supported clade in the Desulfovibrionaceae 16S rRNA gene tree. The taxonomic status of the clade was underscored by complementary phenotypic data. The three isolates comprising the clade formed distinct phyletic branches and were distinguished using a combination of physiological features and by low average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values. Consequently, it is proposed that isolate XJ01 T represents a novel genus and species for which the name Cupidesulfovibrio liaohensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain XJ01 T (=CGMCC 1.5227 T =DSM 107637 T ). It is also proposed that D. oxamicus and D. termitidis be reclassified as Cupidesulfovibrio oxamicus comb. nov. and Cupidesulfovibrio termitidis comb. nov., respectively.

Objective: This study aimed to measure the basal energy expenditure (BEE) of Chinese healthy adults and establish an accurate predictive equation for this population., Methods: In total, 470 Chinese healthy adults had their BEE measured using the Cosmed K4b 2 portable metabolic system. Multiple linear regression analysis was applied to develop new optimal equations for predicting BEE. The bias, accuracy rate, concordance correlation coefficient (CCC), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used to evaluate the accuracy of the predictive equations., Results: There was a significant difference in BEE between males and females, with 5,954 kJ/d and 5,089 kJ/d, respectively. People living in rural areas expended significantly higher BEE (5,885 kJ/d) than those in urban areas (5,279 kJ/d). Previous equations developed by Henry, Schofield, Harris-Benedict (H-B), and Liu overestimated the BEE of Chinese healthy adults. The new equations derived from the present study displayed the smallest average bias and RMSE from the measured basal energy expenditure (mBEE). The CCC of the new equations was higher than other predictive equations, but it was lower than 0.8. There was no significant difference in the accuracy rate among all predictive equations., Conclusions: Sex and regional differences in BEE were observed in Chinese healthy adults. Neither the widely used previous predictive equations nor the one derived in the present study were accurate enough for estimating the BEE of Chinese healthy adults. Background: Metabolic disorders of glucose and lipid were associated with some mineral elements, and data were warranted from various contexts to make the association more explicit., Objective: To investigate the relationships between the serum concentrations of six mineral elements (calcium, cobalt, copper, iron, magnesium, and selenium) and the risk of hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia in adults., Methods: The basic information and the over-night fasting serum samples of adults were randomly collected at a health examination center. The serum concentrations of glucose and lipids were measured with an automatic biochemical analyzer, and the mineral elements were measured with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. Data were analyzed between the hyperglycemia group (HGg) and the normal glucose group (NGg) as well as between the dyslipidemia group (DLg) and the normal lipid group (NLg)., Results: A total of 1466 adults aged 22-81 years (male/female = 1.8) were included, 110 in the HGg and 1356 in the NGg, or 873 in the DLg and 593 in the NLg. The serum element concentration medians [P50 (P25-P75)] significantly different between the HGg and the NGg were 0.83 (0.75-0.94) vs. 0.76 (0.68-0.87) mg/L for copper and 100 (90-110) vs. 94 (87-103) μg/L for selenium (P < 0.001), while those between the DLg and the NLg were 99 (92-110) vs. 97 (90-106) mg/L for calcium, 0.78 (0.69-0.88) vs. 0.75 (0.66-0.85) mg/L for copper, 1.7 (1.4-2.0) vs. 1.6 (1.3-2.0) mg/L for iron, 24 (22-28) vs. 23 (22-27) mg/L for magnesium, and 97 (89-106) vs. 92 (84-100) μg/L for selenium (P < 0.05). When the copper and selenium between the HGg and the NGg were analyzed by logistic regression with age, gender, body mass index, and mineral elements adjusted, only the highest quartile of selenium concentration had association with the increased risk of hyperglycemia [quartile (Q) 4 against Q1: OR = 2.9, 95 % CI = 1.5-5.5, P < 0.001). When the five differed mineral elements between the DLg and the NLg were similarly analyzed, only iron and selenium had associations with the increased risk of dyslipidemia (e.g., Q4 against Q1: OR = 1.4, 95 % CI = 1.1-2.0 for iron and OR = 2.9, 95 % CI = 2.1-4.0 for selenium, P < 0.05)., Conclusion: In contrast to those of calcium, cobalt, copper, iron, and magnesium, the higher serum concentration of selenium increased the risk of both hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia in the study population of adult Chinese., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declared that they have no conflicts of interests to disclose., (Copyright © 2020. Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) was first detected in Hong Kong and has recently spread to many countries around the world. PDCoV causes acute diarrhea and vomiting in pigs, resulting in significant economic losses in the global pork industry. In this study, a Chinese PDCoV strain, designated CHN-HG-2017, was isolated from feces of a suckling piglet with severe watery diarrhea on a farm located in central China. Subsequently, the virus was identified by an indirect immunofluorescence assay and electron microscopy. A nucleotide sequence alignment showed that the whole genome of CHN-HG-2017 is 97.6%-99.1% identical to other PDCoV strains. Analysis of potential recombination sites showed that CHN-HG-2017 is a possible recombinant originating from the strains CH/SXD1/2015 and Vietnam/HaNoi6/2015. Furthermore, the pathogenicity of this recombinant PDCoV strain was investigated in 5-day-old piglets by oral inoculation. The challenged piglets developed typical symptoms, such as vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea and lethargy, from 1 to 7 days post-inoculation (DPI). Viral shedding was detected in rectal swabs until 14 DPI in the challenged piglets. Interestingly, high titers of virus-neutralizing antibodies in sera were detected at 21 DPI. Tissues of small intestines from CHN-HG-2017-infected piglets at 4 DPI displayed significant macroscopic and microscopic lesions with clear viral antigen expression. Our analysis of the full genome sequence of a recombinant PDCoV and its virulence in suckling piglets might provide new insights into the pathogenesis of PDCoV and facilitate further investigation of this newly emerged pathogen.

Psammosilene tunicoides is one of the main ingredients of the "Yunnan Baiyao". P. tunicoides is an endangered species included in the secondary protection list in China Plant Red Data Book as well as the endemic species in Southwest China. Its natural resources could not meet the needs of pharmaceutical production. Construction of core collection of P. tunicoides will lay the foundation for germplasm improvement and molecular breeding. The sequence variation of the key enzymes gene locus (β-AS) were carried out to survey the population structure and population history of the species. Among the 11 populations across its geographical range, 36 haplotypes were identified. The levels of haplotype diversity (Hd=0.905) were high, while the levels of population differentiation (GST=0.280) were low. Analysisof molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated that a significantly greater proportion of total genetic variationpartitioned among populations thanwithin populations (values of 77.43% and 22.57%, respectively). These results in combination with the star-like phylogenetic network analysis indicate that Hap1 as an ancestral haplotypewas shared in four populations, Hap2, Hap4, Hap15 and Hap16 are occurred in two populations, the remains as private haplotype only distributed in single population. Objective: To evaluate the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC) and the estimated patient's age, diagnostic duration and birth cohort effects in patients of Changning District, Shanghai., Methods: Age-standardized rates (ASRs) of CRC over eight intervals of 5 years from 1975 to 2013 were determined. Joinpoint regression analysis was used to determine the changes in annual incidence and mortality trends. Age-period-cohort analysis was performed to investigate their effects on the incidence and mortality trends of CRC., Results: For incidence, the ASRs of 14.14 per 100 000 and 11.81 per 100 000 during 1975-1979 increased to 32.11 per 100 000 and 26.25 per 100 000 in men and women during 2008-2013. For mortality, ASRs of 9.40 per 100 000 and 8.76 per 100 000 increased to 14.80 per 100 000 and 11.92 per 100 000 in men and women, respectively, from 1975-1979 to 2010-2013. Joinpoint regression analysis found an increasing incidence (average annual percentage change [AAPC] 2.18% for men and 1.65% for women) and mortality (AAPC 1.47% for men and 0.97% for women) of CRC throughout the entire period. The incidence and mortality trends of CRC were significantly affected by birth cohorts., Conclusions: The increasing incidence and mortality of CRC are largely affected by the effects of birth cohorts. Background and Aims: This study aimed to create a risk scoring model for death from cirrhosis and hepatorenal syndrome, improve the detection rate of high-risk groups, and provide clinical evidence for early intervention treatment., Patients and Methods: We retrospectively recruited 196 patients with cirrhosis and hepatorenal syndrome between 1 January 2013 and 31 July 2014 at Beijing Ditan Hospital, Capital Medical University, China. The clinical information, biochemical values, age, and sex of the patients were included in the multivariate logistic regression model for screening independent risk factors. The model was validated in 56 patients with cirrhosis and hepatorenal syndrome between 1 August 2014 and 31 December 2014 at Beijing Ditan Hospital, Capital Medical University, China., Results: The death risk prediction scoring model included the following four independent risk factors: liver cancer, neutrophil above 70%, alanine aminotransferase higher than 40 U/l, and creatinine higher than 127 mmol/l. The sum death risk score ranged from 0 to 5: 0-2 identified patients with a lower risk of death (mortality rates: 12-41.4%), whereas 3-5 identified patients with a higher risk of death (mortality rates: 48.8-80%). Receiver-operating characteristic curves were constructed for the scoring model and the areas under the curves (AUC) were compared using the z-test. The AUC of the scoring model was 0.843. In addition, the AUC of validated model in 56 patients was 0.742., Conclusion: The scoring model can accurately predict mortality risk in patients with hepatorenal syndrome.

Most vertebrates reproduce sexually, and plastic sex determination mechanisms including genotypic sex determination (GSD) and environmental sex determination (ESD) have been extensively revealed. However, why sex determination mechanisms evolve diversely and how they correlate with diverse reproduction strategies remain largely unclear. Here, we utilize the superiority of a hexaploid gibel carp (Carassius gibelio) that is able to reproduce by unisexual gynogenesis and contains a rare but diverse proportion of males to investigate these puzzles. A total of 2248 hexaploid specimens were collected from 34 geographic wild populations throughout mainland China, in which 24 populations were revealed to contain 186 males with various incidences ranging from 1.2 to 26.5%. Subsequently, the proportion of temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) was revealed to be positively correlated to average annual temperature in wild populations, and male incidence in lab gynogenetic progenies was demonstrated to increase with the increasing of larval rearing temperature. Meanwhile, extra microchromosomes were confirmed to play genotypic male determination role as previously reported. Thereby, GSD and TSD were found to coexist in gibel carp, and the proportions of GSD were observed to be much higher than that of TSD in sympatric wild populations. Our findings uncover a potential new mechanism in the evolution of sex determination system in polyploid vertebrates with unisexual gynogenesis ability, and also reveal a possible association of sex determination mechanism transition between TSD and GSD and reproduction mode transition between unisexual gynogenesis and bisexual reproduction.

Purpose: To describe the clinical and genetic features of a Chinese progressive myoclonus epilepsy (PME) patient related with SCARB2 mutation without renal impairment and review 27 SCARB2-related PME patients from 11 countries., Methods: The patient was a 27-year-old man with progressive action myoclonus, ataxia, epilepsy, dysarthria and absence of cognitive deterioration. Renal functional test was normal. Electroencephalography (EEG) showed progressively slowed background activity and sporadic generalized spike-and-wave discharges. Electromyography (EMG) showed slowed motor and sensory nerve conduction velocities and distal motor latency delay accompanied by normal compound motor action potential (CMAP) and amplitudes of sensory nerve action potential (SNAP). The amplitude of cortical components of brainstem auditory-evoked potential (BAEP) was normal with slightly prolonged latencies. Generalized atrophy, ventricle enlargement and white matter degeneration was observed in brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Open muscle biopsy and genetic analysis were performed. Two hundred healthy individuals were set for control. Quantitative real time PCR (qPCR), western blotting and immunofluorescence were carried out to evaluate the fate of the SCARB2 mRNA and lysosomal-membrane type 2 (LIMP2) protein level., Results: One homozygous mutation in SCARB2 gene (c.1187 + 5G > T) was identified in the patient. Each of his parents carried a heterozygous variant. This mutation was not detected among the healthy controls and predicted to be damaging or disease causing by prediction tools. qPCR revealed a significantly lower level of SCARB2 mRNA in peripheral blood cell of the proband compared with his parents and healthy control individuals. Muscle biopsy showed mild variation in fiber size. Western blotting and immunofluorescence detected an extremely weak signal of LIMP2 protein from skeletal muscle of the proband., Conclusion: In this study, we identified a SCARB2-related PME patient with normal renal function and a novel homozygous splicing mutation. The present study evaluated the performance of three novel obese indicators, visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP) and waist circumference-triglyceride index (WTI), for identifying metabolic syndrome(MetS) in type 2 diabetes. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 711 type 2 diabetes in Qinhuangdao. The MetS was defined as the definition of Chinese Diabetes Society. Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses were performed to assess the accuracy of three obese indicators as diagnostic tests for MetS. The prevalence of MetS was 71.3%. In men, among all three obese indicators, the LAP had the highest area under curve (AUC) value (AUC = 0.894), followed by VAI (AUC = 0.860) and WTI (AUC = 0.855). In women, among all three obese indicators, the LAP had the highest AUC value (AUC = 0.906), followed by WTI (AUC = 0.887) and VAI (AUC = 0.881). However. there was no significant difference between the three obese indicators(P > 0.05). Three obese indicators were effective indicators for the screening of MetS, LAP and WTI are more simple.

Polyploidy roles on adaptive evolution and ecological novelty have been extensively studied in plants but remained unclear in vertebrates owing to the rare polyploidy incidences. Here, a huge number of 3105 specimens in Carassius species complex including 2211 hexaploids and 894 tetraploids were sampled from 34 locations through mainland China. And hexaploids had wider geographic distribution than tetraploids especially in the areas with high altitude, high latitude and low annual precipitation. Then, an approximate 1050 bp transferrin (tf) fragments were amplified from all the samples, and 526 tf alleles were identified from a total of 37260 sequences at last. Intriguingly, higher nucleotide diversity of tf alleles in hexaploids than in tetraploids was revealed. Moreover, via phylogenetic analysis of tf alleles, potential origin center of Carassius species complex was deduced to be Yangtze River basin and hexaploids should undergo multiple independent polyploidy origins from sympatric tetraploids. These findings indicate that the hexaploids might possess stronger environmental adaptation and ecological novelty than the tetraploids, which provide an association paradigm of recurrent polyploidy and ecological context in polyploid vertebrates.

Background: This study evaluated the feasibility and accuracy of the height-corrected definition for identifying metabolic syndrome (MS)., Methods: In 2006, anthropometric and biochemical measurements were assessed in a cross-sectional population-based study of 3136 Han adolescents, aged 13-17 years. MS was defined according to the definitions of Cook et al, International Diabetes Federation, and the Society of Pediatrics, Chinese Medical Association. Waist-to-height and blood pressure-to-height ratios were alternatives to waist circumference and blood pressure in the height-corrected definition., Results: According to the MS definition and the height-corrected MS definition, this agreement would be classified as "very good" (National Cholesterol Education Program kappa coefficients: 0.850 in boys and 0.816 in girls; International Diabetes Federation kappa coefficients: 0.953 in boys and 0.807 in girls; Society of Pediatrics, Chinese Medical Association kappa coefficients: 0.932 in boys; p < 0.001) and "good" (Society of Pediatrics, Chinese Medical Association kappa coefficients: 0.737 in girls; p < 0.001)., Conclusion: The present study demonstrates that the height-corrected definition of MS is a simple, inexpensive, and accurate tool for identifying MS in Han adolescents., (Copyright © 2016. Objective: To examine the vitamin D status, SNP of the vitamin D receptor gene (VDR) and the effects of vitamin D supplementation on parathyroid hormone and insulin secretion in adult males with obesity or normal weight in a subtropical Chinese city., Design: An intervention trial., Setting: Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, China., Subjects: From a cross-sectional survey conducted from June to July, eighty-two normal-weight and ninety-nine obese males (18-69 years) were screened to analyse their vitamin D status and for five SNP of VDR. From these individuals, in the same season of a different year, obese and normal-weight male volunteers (twenty-one per group) were included for an intervention trial with oral vitamin D supplementation at 1250 µg/week for 8 weeks., Results: For the survey, there was no significant difference (P>0·05) in baseline circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations or in the percentages of participants in different categories of vitamin D status between the two groups. The VDR SNP, rs3782905, was significantly associated with obesity (P=0·043), but none of the examined SNP were correlated with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D when adjusted for age, BMI and study group. After vitamin D supplementation, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration, hypersecretions of parathyroid hormone and insulin, and insulin resistance in the obese were changed beneficially (P<0·05); however, the increase in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D was less than that of the normal-weight men., Conclusions: For obese and normal-weight men of subtropical China, the summer baseline vitamin D status was similar. However, oral vitamin D supplementation revealed a decreased bioavailability of vitamin D in obese men and ameliorated their hypersecretion of parathyroid hormone and insulin resistance.

Background: Dyslipidemia is one of the most important independent modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors for dyslipidemia in Shenzhen, a special economic zone and large metropolitan area neighboring Hong Kong., Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 1,995 adults with a mean age of 46.56 years was conducted between February and July 2011 using a multistage stratified cluster random sampling. All the subjects were administered questionnaires regarding socio-demographic characteristics and other possible factors associated with the prevalence of dyslipidemia. Fasting venous blood samples were collected to assess the lipid profile. Weight, height, waist circumference, and blood pressure were measured., Results: The mean concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were 5.11 ± 1.15 mmol/L, 1.59 ± 1.47 mmol/L, 1.42 ± 0.33 mmol/L, and 3.22 ± 0.84 mmol/L, respectively. High values of TC, TG, low HDL-C, and high LDL-C were obtained in 14.49%, 16.14%, 8.82%, and 12.13 % of the 1,995 participants, respectively. The prevalence of dyslipidemia was 34.64%, among which 25.04% of subjects were aware. Presence of dyslipidemia was significantly associated with increasing age, smoking status, hypertension, diabetes, and body mass index., Conclusions: High prevalence of dyslipidemia with relative low awareness in Shenzhen was found. A comprehensive strategy is required for the prevention, screening, treatment, and control of dyslipidemia in Shenzhen.

Characterization of foraging-site preferences of threatened and endangered species is a key component of effective habitat conservation. We studied foraging-site selection by the brown eared pheasant (Crossoptilon mantchuricum) in the Huanglongshan Nature Reserve, Yanan City, Shaanxi Province, China, from early February to end of May 2011. We identified feeding sites by locating tracks and scratches characteristic of the birds, and compared habitat characteristics at these sites to those at randomly selected sites across the study area. During the pre-breeding season, the birds tended to be found in the areas characterized by gullies within mixed forests with intermediate sun exposure on gentle slopes (< 10°), and close to water and footpaths. The sites utilized by the birds also featured greater tree diameter, lower shrub density, lower grass cover, and lower altitude than random sites. During the breeding season, the birds tended to be found in the areas of slightly higher altitude, more shrubs, moderately steep slopes (10°-20°), and farther from water and paths. These patterns were consistent with seasonal changes in vegetation and food-resource availability in the study area. Management of brown eared pheasants' populations for conservation must account for these seasonal shifts in habitat requirements.

Background: Untreated maternal syphilis can result in the fetuses being infected. Severe adverse pregnancy outcomes include stillbirth, perinatal death, low birth weight, and congenital syphilis (CS). The World Health Organization has already classified global elimination of CS as a priority. However, this preventable disease is still threatening people's health in the world., Methods: A Programme of Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of Syphilis in Shenzhen was launched in 2002. All pregnant women in Shenzhen were screened for syphilis by serological methods at their first prenatal care visit. The infected individuals were treated with 3 weekly injections of 2.4 million units of benzathine penicillin. The babies were followed up until 18 months old to diagnose CS., Results: Up to 2011, the Programme of Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of Syphilis in Shenzhen screened 2,077,362 pregnant women and intervened in 7668 mothers infected with syphilis. The screened rate among pregnant women increased from 89.8% in 2002 to 97.4% in 2011. The proportion of those having adverse pregnant outcomes (including spontaneous abortion, premature delivery, and stillbirth) decreased from 27.3% in 2003 to 8.2% in 2011. The incidence of CS decreased from 115/100,000 in 2002 to 10/100,000 (live births) in 2011., Conclusions: In 2002, in the face of rising CS numbers, Shenzhen adapted a syphilis control program that involved cost-free testing for pregnant women, commitment and collaboration at multiple levels of the health system, and strong supervision and government guidance. Local program and surveillance data suggest that the program has been very successful in reducing CS incidence.

Clinical and experimental data have demonstrated that inflammation plays fundamental roles in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke. Interleukin-16 (IL-16) is identified as a proinflammatory cytokine that is a key element in the ischemic cascade after cerebral ischemia. We aimed to examine the relationship between the IL-16 polymorphisms and the risk of ischemic stroke in a Chinese population. A total of 198 patients with ischemic stroke and 236 controls were genotyped using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and DNA sequencing method. We found that the rs11556218TG genotype and G allele of IL-16 were associated with significantly increased risks of ischemic stroke (TG versus TT, adjusted OR = 1.88; 95% CI, 1.15-3.07; G versus T, adjusted OR = 1.54; 95% CI, 1.05-2.27, resp.). However, there were no significant differences in the genotype and allele frequencies of IL-16 rs4778889 T/C and rs4072111 C/T polymorphisms between the two groups, even after stratification analyses by age, gender, and the presence or absence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertriglyceridemia. These findings indicate that the IL-16 polymorphism may be related to the etiology of ischemic stroke in the Chinese population.

The purpose of this study was to observe both the changes of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and ghrelin in adolescents with family history of type 2 diabetes (FHD) and the relationship between sICAM-1 and ghrelin. This case-control study included 63 adolescents (boys/girls 29/34, age 14.1 ± 0.7 years) without FHD (FHD-) and 67 adolescents (boys/girls 33/34, age 14.0 ± 0.8 years) with FHD (FHD+). Anthropometric measurements, including height, weight, waist circumference (WC), and blood pressure, were obtained. Blood samples were collected, and fasting plasma glucose (FPG), serum lipids, true insulin, sICAM-1, and ghrelin were assayed. The results showed that the age and gender were similar in two groups (P > 0.05). Body mass index (BMI), WC, FPG, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, and sICAM-1 were all significantly higher in the FHD+ group than in the FHD- group (P < 0.05). Ghrelin was significantly lower in the FHD+ group than in the FHD- group (P < 0.05). sICAM-1 was positively correlated with WC (r = 0.178, P = 0.043), fasting insulin (r = 0.195, P = 0.026), HOMA-IR (r = 0.197, P = 0.024), and ghrelin (r = 0.290, P = 0.001). After multivariate analysis, the ghrelin (β = 0.788, 95 % CI: 0.416-1.159, P = 0.000) and HOMA-IR (β = 0.106, 95 % CI: 0.045-0.167, P = 0.001) maintained an independent association with sICAM-1. These findings led to the conclusion that endothelial dysfunction and decline of ghrelin were found in adolescents with family history of diabetes. The decline of ghrelin maybe a protection mechanism for endothelial function in adolescents with family history of diabetes and should be examined in future studies.

Objective: To understand the schistosome infection status of armed police officers and soldiers in endemic areas of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the impact caused by the camp environment., Methods: The inside and outside environments of camps were investigated and they were classified as Grade A, B and C according to scores. The levels of antibody to schistosome of the armed police officers and soldiers were tested with ELISA., Results: A total of 23 780 officers and soldiers in 201 camps were investigated. The positive rates of antibody to schistosome of officers and soldiers stationed in the inner embankment areas, river beach areas and island areas were 1.88%, 3.89% and 4.73%, respectively. In the aforementioned three types areas, the positive rates of antibody to schistosome of soldiers and officers in the camp environment scored as Grade A were 1.23%, 3.28% and 3.33%, respectively, while the positive rates in the environment scored as Grade B were 2.03%, 3.81% and 4.24%, respectively, and the positive rates in the environment scored as Grade C were 3.17%, 5.79% and 5.83%, respectively., Conclusions: There are certain correlation between the prevalence of schistosomiasis in armed police forces and the internal and external environments of their camps. The comprehensive environment management is one of the key measures of schistosomiasis control for armed police forces.

Background: The prevalence of obesity has reached alarming levels in recent years. Neck circumference (NC) has been shown to be an indicator of central adiposity., Aim: The purpose of this study was to analyse whether NC can be used to determine overweight and obesity in Han Chinese children., Subjects and Methods: In 2011, anthropometric measurements were gathered in a cross-sectional, population-based study of 2847 Han children aged 7-12 years. Overweight and obesity were defined according to the 2004 Chinese obesity task force definition. Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses were conducted to assess the accuracy of NC as a diagnostic test for elevated body mass index (BMI) (overweight and obesity)., Results: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in boys was 18.0% and 26.0%, respectively, and 11.7% and 15.7%, respectively, for girls. The mean NC in boys was significantly greater than in girls (29.2 ± 3.1 cm vs 28.1 ± 2.8 cm, p < 0.001). NC was significantly correlated with age, BMI and waist circumference in both boys and girls (p < 0.001 for all comparisons). NC cut-off values for elevated BMI were between 27.4~31.3 cm in boys and 26.3~31.4 cm in girls. The sensitivities were 75.5~86.7% in boys and 80.0~92.5% in girls. The specificities were 73.9~91.7% in boys and 74.7~93.3% in girls., Conclusion: The present study demonstrates that NC is a simple, inexpensive and accurate measurement that may be used to identify overweight and obesity in Han children.

Objective: To analyze the trend of prevalence and major risk factors for diabetes between 1997 and 2009 in Shenzhen., Methods: A total sample of 7956 and 8487 residents aged from 20 to 69 years were selected using multi-stage cluster sampling from two cross-sectional chronic diseases survey in Shenzhen in 1997 and 2009 respectively. The variation of prevalence between different age groups (divided into a 5-year age group) were compared. The effect of risk factors was evaluated by population attributable risk percentage (PARP), and time trend of PARP for risk factors were analyzed., Results: Compared with that in 1997, the aged-adjusted prevalence of diabetes has increased from 3.85% (306/7956) to 5.21% (441/8487) in 2009 (χ(2) = 17.54, P < 0.001). The prevalence in age group 50 - 54, 60 - 64, and 65 - 69 years increased significantly from 7.88% (35/444), 8.55% (36/421) and 11.34 (33/291) to 12.09% (59/488), 14.63% (55/376) and 20.71% (70/338) respectively (χ(2) = 4.54, 7.25 and 10.01, P < 0.05). After controlling for age, the rates of abdominal obesity, family history of diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypertension increased from 21.56% (1715/7956), 4.39% (349/7956), 26.34% (2096/7956) and 11.53% (917/7956) to 31.88% (2706/8487), 12.84% (1090/8487), 41.38%(3512/8487) and 14.61% (1240/8487) respectively (χ(2) = 5.52, 14.83, 18.38 and 20.22, P < 0.01). For diabetes, the PARP of aging, dyslipidemia and abdominal obesity were 41.55%, 29.25% and 25.10% respectively., Conclusion: The prevalence of diabetes in Shenzhen increases rapidly and more patients are found in younger age. The rise of diabetes was mainly attributed to aging and increasing exposures to risk factors.

Objective: To analyze the molecular pathogenesis of protein S deficiency in an adolescent case of recurrent deep vein thrombosis (DVT)., Methods: Blood samples from the patient and his family members were collected for detection of the coagulation parameters by one-step clotting method, and the protein S (PS) and protein C activities were measured by a chromogenic assay. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was employed for detecting the levels of free PS antigen. All the exons and exon-intron boundaries of the patients PS gene were amplified using PCR and analyzed by direct sequencing., Results: As carriers of hereditary PS deficiency, both the patient and his father showed a heterozygous C82792T point mutation in the 10th exon of their PS gene which resulted in the substitution of arginine314 by cysteine in the polypeptide chain of PS protein., Conclusion: Recurrence of DVT in this patient is the result of hereditary PS deficiency caused by a novel heterozygous missense mutation in the PS gene.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) remains the only curative therapy for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). In this study, the long-term outcomes of HLA-matched sibling donor (MSD) with mismatched related donor (MRD) and unrelated donor (URD) transplantation for CML in the first chronic phase (CML-CP1) using different graft vs. host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis regimens according to donor source and the degree of HLA matching were compared. The data of 91 patients with CML-CP1 were analyzed with respect to GVHD, overall survival (OS), and transplant-related mortality (TRM). The incidence of grade II-IV acute GVHD was 25.5% in the MSD and 40.5% in the MRD/URD group (P = 0.133). The 1-year cumulative incidence of chronic GVHD was not different between the MSD and the MRD/URD groups, while extensive chronic GVHD was different between the two groups (31.9% vs. 10.8%, P = 0.023). The 5-year cumulative relapse rate was not different between the MSD and the MRD/URD groups, while TRM was different between the two groups (6.6% vs. 26.3%, P = 0.010). The 5-year cumulative OS was 90.9%, 71.5%, and 85.4% in the MSD, the MRD/URD, and the HLA allele-matched URD transplantation, respectively (MSD vs. MRD/URD, P = 0.013; MSD vs. HLA allele-matched URD, P = 0.437). In conclusion, survival in HLA allele-matched URD is equivalent to MSD, but in MRD and mismatched URD is inferior to MSD in patients with CML-CP1 undergoing allo-HSCT using different GVHD prophylaxis regimens according to donor source and degree of HLA matching. Patients undergoing MRD/URD transplantation have an equal quality of life as patients undergoing MSD transplantation.

Objective: To assess whether the relationship between abnormal fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels and patient outcomes holds for both older men and older women with acute myocardial infarction (AMI)., Patients and Methods: From April 1, 2004, to October 31, 2006, a total of 2016 consecutive older patients (age ≥65 years) presenting with AMI were screened. Of these patients, 1854 were consecutively enrolled in the study. Patients were categorized into 4 groups: the hypoglycemic group (FPG, ≤90.0 mg/dL [to convert to mmol/L, multiply by 0.0555]; n=443, 23.9%), the euglycemic group (FPG, 90.1-126.0 mg/dL; n=812, 43.8%), the mildly hyperglycemic group (FPG, 126.1-162.0 mg/dL; n=308, 16.6%), and the severely hyperglycemic group (FPG, ≥162.1 mg/dL; n=291, 15.7%). The primary outcomes were rates of in-hospital and 3-year mortality., Results: Female patients were older and had a higher incidence of diabetes mellitus but lower rates of smoking and use of invasive therapy. Men tended to have a higher frequency of hypoglycemia, whereas women tended to have a higher frequency of hyperglycemia. No significant difference was found in in-hospital (10.9% vs 9.1%; P=.36) or 3-year (24.5% vs 24.5%; P=.99) mortality between male and female patients, and FPG-associated mortality did not vary significantly by sex., Conclusion: An increased FPG level was associated with a relatively higher risk of in-hospital mortality in men but not in women. Nonetheless, increased and decreased FPG levels at admission could predict higher mortality rates regardless of sex. There was a striking U-shaped relationship between FPG levels and in-hospital and 3-year mortality. The effect of abnormal FPG level on outcomes among older patients with AMI did not vary significantly by sex.

Introduction: Consistent definitions of congenital syphilis are critical for determining true incidences and setting up targets of elimination. This study aimed to assess the evaluation and management of infants at high risk of congenital syphilis with an antenatal syphilis-screening programme in the Shenzhen SEZ and to develop feasible definitions for the detection of congenital syphilis in China., Methods: A retrospective study was conducted of all standardised records of pregnant women with positive syphilis between 2003 and 2007. Infants at high risk of congenital syphilis were evaluated by laboratory tests at birth and longitudinal follow-up. A screening test-positive congenital syphilis case was defined based on a positive 19S-IgM-FTA-ABS result at birth. Assuming that 19S-IgM-FTA-ABS was the gold standard, the sensitivity and specificity of the ascertainment methods were calculated., Results: During the study period, 1010 live infants were born to women with active syphilis during pregnancy. 19S-IgM-FTA-ABS detected 42 screening-positive congenital syphilis cases and another nine cases were identified by longitudinal follow-up only. Using 19S-IgM-FTA-ABS as the gold standard, 'fourfold rapid plasma reagin (RPR) titres' had the highest sensitivity and specificity compared with the other two follow-up methods., Discussion: 19S-IgM-FTA-ABS makes congenital syphilis case classification simpler and faster for newborns. In areas where 19S-IgM-FTA-ABS is not available, comparing newborn RPR titres with maternal titres can be an alternative method. Meanwhile, positive follow-up results act as treatment indicators for older infants. As congenital syphilis definitions vary over the country, the Shenzhen programme suggested a practical model for surveillance and treatment in areas with or without available 19S-IgM-FTA-ABS testing.

This paper investigated the spatial variability of the correlations between grain yields and fertilization quantity within the selected agricultural watershed, in the typical black soil region, and then optimized the fertilization quantity at different landscape farmlands within the watershed based on the regression equations. Study simulated the surface runoff water quality before and after fertilization spatial adjustment with the achieved parameters by Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The results showed that watershed scale fertilization adjustment is possible and necessary according to the spatial heterogeneity about fertilization and grain yields. Based on grain yield stability, spatial adjustment of fertilization reduced the whole watershed total N fertilization quantity by 1.88%, and the total non-point nutrients load reduction of NH4+ -N and NO3- -N was 9.7%, 5.6%, respectively.

Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics of severely and critically ill children with 2009 influenza A (H1N1) infection., Method: Clinical data of 150 cases with 2009 influenza A (H1N1) virus infection confirmed with the use of a real-time polymerase-chain-reaction assay on nasopharyngeal swab specimens were analyzed., Result: Among 150 severely and critically ill children with 2009 influenza A (H1N1) virus infection, 103 were male, 47 were female; the median age was 5 years, 81(55%) were 5 years of age or older; 21 (14%) had underlying chronic diseases. The most common presenting symptoms were fever (95%), cough (89%), vomiting (23%), wheezing (19%), abdominal pain (16%), lethargy (7%), seizures (6%), myalgia (6%), and diarrhea (6%). The common laboratory abnormalities were increased or decreased white blood cells counts (40%), elevated of CRP (33%), LDH (29%), CK (25%) and AST (19%). Clinical complications included pneumonia (65%), encephalopathy (12%), myocarditis (5%), encephalitis (1%) and myositis (1%). All patients had received antibiotics before admission or on admission; 73% of patients had received oseltamivir treatment, 23% of patients had received corticosteroids; 32 (21%) were admitted to an ICU, 13 patients were intubated and mechanically ventilated. Fourteen patients with dyspnea who were irresponsive to the treatment experienced bronchoalveolar lavage with flexible bronchoscopy, and the branching bronchial casts were removed in 5 patients. Totally 145 (97%) patients were discharged, five (3%) died, three previously healthy patients died from severe encephalopathy, one patient died from ARDS, one previously healthy patient died from secondary fungal meningitis., Conclusion: Severely and critically ill children with 2009 influenza A (H1N1) virus infection may occur mainly in older children without underlying chronic disease. The clinical spectrum and laboratory abnormality of the patients can have a wide range. Neurologic complications may be common and severe encephalopathy can lead to death in previously healthy children. Early use of bronchoalveolar lavage with flexible bronchoscopy may reduce death associated with pulmonary complications.
