The toxicity of mercury (Hg), is generally known, and around 90% of Hg exist as methylmercury (CH 3 Hg + ) in marine organism. Mercury concentrates in sharks and whales, which are at the top of the food chain as predators to cephalopods. The concentrations of Hg in liver and muscle of blue shark, caught in Sagami Bay, and in digestive gland and mantles of Todarodes pacificus, Sepia madokai, and Uroteuthis edulis caught in East China Sea were measured and analyzed. The Hg concentrations in the sharks, squids, and cuttlefishes determined in this study were almost same as those in the other sea regions. In addition, the Hg concentration in the blue shark was higher in the muscle than in the liver. In S. madokai and U. edulis, Hg accumulated in the digestive gland but not in the mantle. Although the Hg concentration in the digestive gland of T. pacificus is lower than those of S. madkai and U edulis, Hg concentration in the mantle is critically higher. More than 90% of Hg is present as CH 3 Hg + in muscle of blue shark and mantle of T. pacificus. This feature is explained due to amino acids with the thiol groups and chain genes in the muscle of blue shark as well as in the mantle of T. pacificus. Myosin in the mantle of T. pacificus and blue shark enhances the stability of CH 3 Hg + . The amount of Hg in the digestive gland of T. pacificus could be too large to store; thus, Hg is released to the mantle, whereas the nutrients in the digestive gland of T. pacificus are supplied to other tissues. Gram-negative bacteria of the genus Xenorhabdus exhibit a mutualistic association with steinernematid entomopathogenic nematodes and a pathogenic relationship with insects. Here we describe two isolates of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema aciari collected from China and Japan. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity and phylogenetic analysis indicated that the isolates obtained from S. aciari belonged to the genus Xenorhabdus. Multilocus sequence analysis based on five universal protein-coding gene sequences revealed that the isolates were closely related to Xenorhabdus ehlersii DSM 16337(T) and Xenorhabdus griffiniae ID10(T) but that they exhibited <97 % sequence similarity with these reference strains, which indicated that the isolates were distinct from previously described species. Based on these genetic differences and several differential phenotypic traits, we propose that the isolates represent a novel species of the genus Xenorhabdus, for which we propose the name Xenorhabdus ishibashii sp. nov. The type strain is GDh7(T) ( = DSM 22670(T)  = CGMCC 1.9166(T)).

Background: The association between human papillomavirus (HPV) and anogenital tumors, especially cervical cancer, is well documented. However, it remains unclear whether there is also a correlation between HPV infection and human breast cancer., Methods: We used PCR and Southern blot hybridization to analyze HPV-related DNA specimens from 32 cases of invasive ductal carcinoma operated upon in the Shanghai region of China., Results: DNA derived from HPV33 was detected in 14 cases (43.8%). No HPV16 or HPV18 DNA was detected in any of the cases in this study. This is the first report demonstrating a correlation between HPV33 infection and breast cancer., Conclusions: Our results suggest that HPV33 infection may be involved in the pathogenesis of breast cancer in Chinese.

The relationship between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and breast cancer is controversial. In this study, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks prepared from 72 patients with benign, premalignant or malignant mammary lesions were randomly collected from the Shanghai region of China and Tokushima in Japan. DNA specimens extracted from all tissues were amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using HPV16, 18 and 33 primers. Southern blot hybridization showed 19 cases to be positive for HPV33 DNA: The positive rate for HPV33 DNA in Chinese (41.7%) was significantly higher than in Japanese (11.1%) (P < 0.01): The positive rate for HPV33 DNA in invasive ductal carcinoma (34.1%) was higher than in benign or borderline mammary lesions (5%) (P < 0.02). There were no statistically significant difference among the relationship of the nuclear grade of breast cancers with HPV33 DNA-positivity. This is the first report of a positive correlation between HPV33 DNA and breast lesions in Chinese and Japanese populations. These results suggest that the infection by HPV33, but not HPV 16 or HPV 18, may be involved in breast hyperplastic lesions, especially breast cancer, in humans.
