Transforming smallholder farms is critical to global food security and environmental sustainability. The science and technology backyard (STB) platform has proved to be a viable approach in China. However, STB has traditionally focused on empowering smallholder farmers by transferring knowledge, and wide-scale adoption of more sustainable practices and technologies remains a challenge. Here, we report on a long-term project focused on technology scale-up for smallholder farmers by expanding and upgrading the original STB platform (STB 2.0). We created a formalized and standardized process by which to engage and collaborate with farmers, including integrating their feedback via equal dialogues in the process of designing and promoting technologies. Based on 288 site-year of field trials in three regions in the North China Plain over 5 y, we find that technologies cocreated through this process were more easily accepted by farmers and increased their crop yields and nitrogen factor productivity by 7.2% and 28.1% in wheat production and by 11.4% and 27.0% in maize production, respectively. In promoting these technologies more broadly, we created a "one-stop" multistakeholder program involving local government agencies, enterprises, universities, and farmers. The program was shown to be much more effective than the traditional extension methods applied at the STB, yielding substantial environmental and economic benefits. Our study contributes an important case study for technology scale-up for smallholder agriculture. The STB 2.0 platform being explored emphasizes equal dialogue with farmers, multistakeholder collaboration, and long-term investment. Isodon xiaoluzhiensis, a new species of the tribe Ocimeae in family Lamiaceae, is described and illustrated. The new species is known only from the type locality, Xiaoluzhi village in Luzhijang dry-hot valley of Yimen County, central Yunnan, southwest China. It is characterized by having a procumbent habit, gracile stems and branches, relatively small leaves and flowers, and the phenology of flowering in winter. Silene ophioglossa Huan C. Wang & Feng Yang, a new species of Caryophyllaceae, is here described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular evidence. The new species was found in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, southwest China. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS sequences showed this new species belongs to section Cucubaloides. Morphologically, it resembles S. phoenicodonta and S. viscidula, which were also found in the southwest China, but clearly differs from the latter two species by having 5-7 mm long calyces with sparsely hirtellous and short glandular hairs, white petals, linear limbs and lobes, and absent or oblong-linear coronal scales. A distribution map and a table with morphological diagnostic characters of new species and its closest relatives are provided, as well as a preliminary conservation assessment of S. ophioglossa under the IUCN criteria. Breynia hiemalis Huan C. Wang & Feng Yang (Phyllanthaceae), of sect. Cryptogynium (Müll.Arg.) Welzen & Pruesapan in subg. Breynia, is described from Yunnan, south-west China. It is known from only a single locality in the valley of the Yuanjiang River, and usually occurs in the understory of the savanna vegetation. It is characterized by its broadly elliptic to orbicular leaf blades, shallowly plate-like calyces of the staminate flowers, ovaries with clearly erose rim and urceolate capsules. Campanula luzhijiangensis (Campanulaceae: Campanuleae) is described and illustrated as a new species from Yunnan, southwest China. The new species is mainly characterized by its relatively gracile stems polyphyllous, small and oblanceolate leaves, and flowers and fruits with small size within Chinese Campanula. It is only known from a single locality in the valley of the Luzhijiang River, usually occurring in the rock crevices, xerophilous scrubs or grasslands. A table of morphological characters comparing the new species with its closest relatives is provided along with a key to the species of Campanula from Yunnan Province, as well as a preliminary conservation assessment of C. luzhijiangensis under the IUCN criteria. Indigofera vallicola (Fabaceae), a new species is described and illustrated. This plant is only found from two localities in the central Yunnan Province, southwest China. It is characterized by having the prostrate habit, usually 13–17-foliolate leaves and the relatively small (3–5 mm long) flowers. Hemilophia cardiocarpa (Brassicaceae), the sixth species of the Chinese endemic genus Hemilophia, is described and illustrated. This plant is found in the Jiaozishan Mountains in Dongchuan District, northern Yunnan, southwest China. Morphologically, it shows close relationships with H. rockii and H. pulchella, but differs from it in the leaf shape and size, inflorescence, flower size, shape of fruit and length of its pedicel. Duhaldea lachnocephala Huan C. Wang & Feng Yang (Asteraceae: Inuleae) is described and illustrated as a new species. The new species is only known from the Luzhijiang valley, Yunnan Province, southwest China. It is characterized prominently by having dense arachnoid-lanate hairs on stems, leaves and phyllaries, and white marginal florets usually 2-3-seriate. Morphological comparisons with its closest relatives D. nervosa, D. revoluta and D. simonsii are presented. Silene vanchingshanensis (Caryophyllaceae), a new species from Fanjingshan Mountain in Guizhou (southwest China) is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to S. morrisonmontana and S. hupehensis, from which it can be easily distinguished by having pubescent stems usually 10-15 cm long, linear-oblanceolate leaves 3-6 cm x 3-6 mm, often 2-5-flowered cymes, pink or violet petals and narrowly ovoid capsules. Oxalis shibeishanensis Huan C. Wang & Y. Tian (Oxalidaceae), belonging to O. subsect. Oxalis, is described and illustrated as a new species endemic to Yunnan, Southwest China. It is most similar to O. obtriangulata, but clearly differs from the latter by its 1.5-3 cm long, 3-9 cm wide leaflets with broadly cuneate base and not emarginate apex, 2-flowered inflorescences, narrowly ovate to broadly lanceolate sepals, and the petals being bifid at the apex. Background: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within precursor microRNAs (miRNAs) can affect miRNAs expression, and may be involved in the pathogenesis of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). This study aimed to investigate potential associations between the four precursor miRNA SNPs (miR-146a C > G, miR-149 T > C, miR-196a2 T > C, and miR-499 T > C) and susceptibility to pulmonary TB in the Chinese Uygur, Kazak, and Southern Han populations. Methods: A case-control study was performed on Chinese Uygur (n = 662), Kazak (n = 612), and Southern Han (n = 654) populations using the PCR-PFLR method. The allele and genotype frequencies for all populations were analyzed. Linkage disequilibrium was performed, and different models of inheritance were tested. Results: The allele and genotype frequencies of the miR-499 SNP were significantly different between the TB patients group and the healthy control group in the Uygur population, and were found to be codominant, dominant, recessive and additive models in association with pulmonary TB. The haplotype CTCC showed significant correlation with pulmonary TB. The allele and genotype frequencies of miR-146a and miR-196a2 SNPs were significantly different between the two groups in the Kazak population. The miR-146a SNP was found to be codominant, recessive and additive models, whereas, the miR-196a2 SNP was found to be codominant, dominant, and additive models in association with pulmonary TB. The haplotypes TCCC and CCCT showed significant correlation with pulmonary TB. Conclusions: The results suggested that susceptibility to pulmonary TB may be closely related to individual differences caused by genetic factors among different ethnic groups in China. Different species of forest trees exhibit great diversity in seed features, and diverse tactics of seed handling and dispersal are adopted by rodents. To better understand the discriminatory handling of sympatric seeds by rodents, seeds of four plant species, Quercus variabilis, Prunus armeniaca, P. davidiana, and P. persica, were released and tracked in a temperate forest in Yugong area of Jiyuan, Henan, north China. Results showed that: (1) seed removal rates of acorn (Q. variabilis), wild apricot (P. armeniaca) and wild peach (P. davidiana) differed significantly, while almost all (99%) peach seeds (P. persica) remained in situ; (2) acorns (55%) were eaten more than wild apricot (4%) and wild peach (0%), whereas seeds of wild apricot (62%) were scattered-hoarded more than wild peach (13%) and acorns (36%); hull thickness exerted a nonlinear influence on eating and scatter-hoarding; (3) rodents transported wild peach seeds farther (3.81 m ± 2.44 SE) than wild apricot seeds (3.41 m ± 2.05) and acorns (2.49 m ± 2.37); (4) rodents buried multiple wild apricot seeds in some caches, but seeds of wild peach and acorn were stored singly. Results indicated that, for sympatric seeds, rodents would adopt discriminatory processing and storing strategies in eating, burying, dispersal and cache size. Seeds with medium hull thickness were more likely to be dispersed and to survive, and consequently have higher probability of future germination and seedling establishment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new trichostome ciliate, Balantidium honghuensis n. sp., was isolated from the recta of Rana nigromaculata and R. limnocharis during parasite surveys in Honghu Lake, Hubei Province, central China in summer of 2010 and 2011. Its detailed morphometric characters based on LM and SEM studies were described herein. The organism is oval in shape and thickly ciliated. The vestibulum is "V" shaped and occupies about 1/3 to 2/5 of the body length. The vestibular and nearby regions possess strong peripheral fibers which form a marked axial fiber about the cytopharynx. More than 10 contractile vacuoles are distributed along the periphery of the latter body. Comparisions were made between this new species and B. sinensis Nie, 1935. They were discriminated from each other in terms of general body forms, body size, and vestibulum shapes. Besides, special attention was paid to its high-speed daughter swarmers which we believed to be the infective stage of B. honghuensis. Premise of the study: The possible persistence of wild Ginkgo biloba populations in China has long been debated but never scientifically confirmed. We test our hypothesis that the extant Ginkgo populations in the Dalou Mountains (SW China) represent fragments of the original natural Ginkgo range and offer a range of pertinent perspectives on the living fossil Ginkgo's history, prehistory, ecology, and place in human culture--all important aspects of this highly valued species. Methods: We analyzed the vegetation of the study area, determined the population age structure of Ginkgo, and compared it to existing fossil records. For supporting material, we also examined records of the lack of human presence before the mid-17th century in the area, the local people's beliefs regarding preservation of the forests and existing genetic studies. Key results: Current species composition of Ginkgo forests in the Dalou Mountains agrees closely with floristic assemblages from fossil records bearing G. biloba. Current populations are found in habitats similar to those of fossil Ginkgo, which, as today, favored rock crevices. Female to male ratios are 3:2. Estimated ages for many of the trees show that Ginkgo was present in this area prior to human settlement and indigenous peoples of this area are unlikely to have planted Ginkgo because of traditional beliefs. Our results agree with existing genetic studies that show that these mountains were glacial refugia for G. biloba. Conclusions: The corroborative evidence confirms the finding that these populations represent fragments of the original natural Ginkgo in the valley and lower mountain slopes of the Dalou Mountains. The article discusses about the dynamic aircraft-taxiing model and its application in hub airports. The study used a system composing of solutions including a dynamic aircraft-taxiing model, a surface operations observer, and a surface conflict controller to assess 3 aircraft trajectory record fragments from the Chengdu Shuangliu airport in Nanjing, China. Results showed that mean aircraft waiting times were reduced and mean taxiing speed grew, proving that the method can enhance traffic flow.

Targeted cancer therapies, with specific molecular targets, ameliorate the side effect issue of radiation and chemotherapy and also point to the development of personalized medicine. Combination of drugs targeting multiple pathways of carcinogenesis is potentially more fruitful. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been tailoring herbal mixtures for individualized healthcare for two thousand years. A systematic study of the patterns of TCM formulas and herbs prescribed to cancers is valuable. We analysed a total of 187,230 TCM prescriptions to 30 types of cancer in Taiwan in 2007, a year's worth of collection from the National Health Insurance reimbursement database (Taiwan). We found that a TCM cancer prescription consists on average of two formulas and four herbs. We show that the percentage weights of TCM formulas and herbs in a TCM prescription follow Zipf's law with an exponent around 0.6. TCM prescriptions to benign neoplasms have a larger Zipf's exponent than those to malignant cancers. Furthermore, we show that TCM prescriptions, via weighted combination of formulas and herbs, are specific to not only the malignancy of neoplasms but also the sites of origins of malignant cancers. From the effects of formulas and natures of herbs that were heavily prescribed to cancers, that cancers are a 'warm and stagnant' syndrome in TCM can be proposed, suggesting anti-inflammatory regimens for better prevention and treatment of cancers. We show that TCM incorporated relevant formulas to the prescriptions to cancer patients with a secondary morbidity. We compared TCM prescriptions made in different seasons and identified temperatures as the environmental factor that correlates with changes in TCM prescriptions in Taiwan. Lung cancer patients were among the patients whose prescriptions were adjusted when temperatures drop. Idiopathic congenital nystagmus (ICN) is a common oculomotor disorder characterized by bilateral involuntary, periodic, and predominantly ocular oscillations. X-linked ICN (XLICN) with incomplete penetrance in females is the most common inheritance form, and FERMdomain containing (FRMD7) mutation is the major reason for XLICN families. To date, 39 FRMD7mutations have been identified, and 50% of the XLICN pedigrees have yielded FRMD7mutations in the Western population. In this study, we identified a novel frameshift mutation (c.1274–1275delTG) in the FRMD7gene in six XLICN pedigrees. Incorporated with data reported from other two Chinese groups, approximately 47% XLICN pedigrees were caused by the FRMD7mutation in China. Therefore, this study showed that mutation analysis of the FRMD7gene had diagnostic value not only in the Western population but also in one of the biggest Eastern populations, Chinese XLICN families. Abstract: We review, for the first time, a 20-year Chinese story of research and development pertaining to tribendimidine, a promising anthelmintic agent that is safe and exhibits a broad spectrum of activity. Tribendimidine was first synthesized at the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases in Shanghai in the mid 1980s. In laboratory studies, tribendimidine showed high efficacy against Nippostrongylus braziliensis in rats, Necator americanus in hamsters, Ancylostoma caninum and Toxocara canis in dogs, and Syphacia mesocriceti in mice. Activity was also found against several species of cestodes in chicken. In clinical trials, a single oral dose of 400mg tribendimidine, administered to patients infected only with N. americanus, or with N. americanus and Ancylostoma duodenalis, resulted in cure rates of 85.7% (132/154) and 89.8% (53/59), respectively. In comparison, a single oral dose of 400mg albendazole resulted in significantly lower cure rates, namely 65.5% (91/139; χ 2 =16.47, P <0.001) and 71.7% (43/60; χ 2 =6.29, P =0.012), respectively. Single oral doses of tribendimidine (300mg) and albendazole (400mg) were equally effective against Ascaris lumbricoides infections; cure rates were 96.0% (97/101) and 98.1% (101/103), respectively. In 5–14-year-old children with an Enterobius vermicularis infection, treated with a single oral dose of 200mg tribendimidine, a cure rate of 81.6% (93/114) was observed. Tribendimidine was well-tolerated as only mild and transient side effects were observed. It would be of great public health significance if these findings are confirmed in other epidemiological settings, as more than one-quarter of the world population is currently affected by intestinal nematodes, with only very few drugs currently available on the market. Aim: It has been reported that nucleus accumbens (NAc) lesions can help to prevent relapse in opioid addicts. This article aimed to investigate associations between personality changes and NAc lesions., Methods: The surgery group consisted of 78 patients who had received bilateral stereotactic lesions of the NAc to treat opioid addiction. Seventy two non-surgery opioid addicts were appropriately paired with the patients of the surgery group as the non-surgery group. All participants were interviewed in person and received urine tests, naloxone provocative tests and hair tests to determine the prevalence of relapse. Eysenck personality questionnaire (EPQ) and the health survey questionnaire (SF-36) were employed to assess personality and functional health, respectively., Results: In the surgery group, 30 participants relapsed, and the non-relapse rate was 61.5% (48/78). Compared with the Chinese normative data, the neuroticism (N) and psychoticism (P) dimensions of the EPQ in the non-surgery group were significantly higher, whereas the lie (L) dimension was significantly lower. There was no significant difference in all dimensions of the EPQ between the surgery group and the Chinese normative data. The N dimension in the relapse group and the L dimension in the surgery group were significantly lower than those of the non-surgery group. The P dimension in the relapse group was significantly higher than that of the non-relapse group. The extraversion (E) dimension was relatively stable between these groups., Conclusion: Although the influence of other factors cannot be excluded, it is apparent that surgically induced NAc lesions are associated with lower P and N dimensions for opioid addicts, and a higher P dimension is associated with a tendency to relapse.
