The regional boom in digital economy has provided people with remote conversations and socialization while reducing the risk of depression. This study aims to elucidate whether regional digital economy can be a savior for individual depression. The multi-source dataset collects 11,845 individuals from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2018 (CHARLS), with the combination of corresponding regional data from China City Statistical Yearbooks. A series of regressions with integrated mediation and moderation analyses are employed to bridge the link between the digital economy and depression. The results suggest that people living in areas with a higher level of digital economy are less likely to suffer from depression. The development of the digital economy helps people find solace or air grievances more easily, thereby reducing the risk of depression. Individual information and communications technology (ICT) engagement is found to mediate the relationship between the regional digital economy and individual depression. Residence type moderates the association between the three casual pairs of digital economy, ICT engagement, and depression. Improved digitization stimulates personal engagement with ICTs, which in turn expands social connections and support. Strengthened social interactions naturally keep depression away. Moreover, the urban-rural differences further confirm the underlying mechanism. Rapid urbanization is a major trend in global population migration. There is growing debate about whether this urban-rural disparity exacerbate depression at the individual level. This study aims to investigate how urban living has a beneficial impact on individual mental health. Based on the data of 15,764 participants in the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), we perform analysis of variance to identify the gap in depression levels between urban and rural areas. Extensive comparisons and detailed statistical analyses are carried out to demonstrate the differences in social participation between urban and rural residents. Finally, we conduct a series of mediation and moderation analyses to reveal the underlying mechanisms of depressive disorder benefits of cities. The results indicate that those who lived in urban areas were less likely to suffer from depression (β = −1.461, 95 % CI = [−1.691, −1.235], p < 0.001). Social engagement is found to mediate the relationship between residence type (β = 0.164, 95 % CI = [0.136, 0.193], p < 0.001) and individual depression (β = −0.462, 95 % CI = [−0.587, −0.337], p < 0.001). City size plays a moderating role in the association between urban living and social engagement. The mechanism is conducted through cross-sectional data. Self-reported depression status is accessed in this study, which could lead to measurement error. In the background of the post-epidemic era, the consumption demand and market scale of cold chain logistics in China are expanding, but there is still an obvious gap with developed countries. To complete the balance between the supply and demand for aquatic products and the rational allocation of logistics resources and promote the rapid development trend of aquatic product cold chain logistics, it is particularly important to forecast and analyze the demand for aquatic product cold chain logistics. This article selects six main factors that affect the demand for aquatic products in cold chain logistics, uses the traditional grey model and the grey-BP neural network model to simulate and predict the demand for aquatic products in cold chain logistics in China from 2012 to 2021, and compares and analyzes the simulation results. Generally speaking, the demand for aquatic products from Chinese residents is on the rise. In the simulation prediction process, the prediction error of the grey-BP neural network is reduced compared to the traditional grey model, and the processing ability of the nonlinear system is ideal. The results show that the grey-BP neural network model is an effective method to predict the demand for cold chain logistics of aquatic products. Finally, suggestions are made on the future development of aquatic cold chain logistics in the post-epidemic era from the economic, social, and environmental aspects, which provide valuable decision-making reference for the development of marine aquaculture enterprises and cold chain logistics industry. Background: The HTLV-1 prevalence in China varies geographically, while HTLV-2 infection has rarely been found so far. Proviral load is one of the determining factors of pathogenesis and progression of HTLV-1 related diseases. However, neither molecular assays nor commercial kits are available for HTLV-1 diagnosis in China. The objective of the present study was to develop and validate a TaqMan qPCR assay for HTLV-1 proviral load quantification. Results: A plasmid containing both the HTLV-1 of interest and a fragment of the RNase P (RPPH1) gene was constructed and used to establish the standard curves. The assay has a wide dynamic range (2.5 × 108 copies/reaction ~ 25 copies/reaction) and sensitive to 1 copy for HTLV-1 and RPPH1. The limit of detection for Hut102 cell concentration was 0.0218% (95% confidence interval 0.0179–0.0298%). The assay gave coefficient of variation (CV) for both the HTLV-1 and RPPH1 Ct values. All of the HTLV-1 sero-negative samples and MOT cell line (infected with HTLV-2) amplified only the RPPH1 gene by our method, presenting 100% specificity. 85 Samples confirmed positive or indeterminate by LIA were performed by established qPCR assay and WB. 90.0% (27/30) of LIA-HTLV-1-positive, 33% (2/6) of LIA-untypeable and 2% (1/49) of LIA-indeterminate samples were defined as qPCR-positive. The median PVL of LIA-positive samples (n = 27, 1.780 copies/100 cells) was much higher than that of LIA-untypeable and (n = 2, 0.271 copies/100 cells) indeterminate samples (n = 1, 0.017 copies/ 100 cells). Additionally, compared to WB, the duplex qPCR verified more positive samples, demonstrating a better sensitivity. Conclusion: The duplex qPCR developed here with high sensitivity, good specificity and reproducibility could accurately and quantitatively detect the HTLV-1 PVLs, which can be used to confirm the initial reactive samples for an improved cost/benefit ratio as well as to monitor the clinical progression and efficacy of therapy in patients with HTLV-1 related disease. Climate change is an important driver of species distribution and biodiversity. Understanding the response of plants to climate change is helpful to understand species differentiation and formulate conservation strategies. The genus Polyspora (Theaceae) has an ancient origin and is widely distributed in subtropical evergreen broad‐leaved forests. Studies on the impacts of climate change on species geographical distribution of Chinese Polyspora can provide an important reference for exploring the responses of plant groups in subtropical evergreen broad‐leaved forests with geological events and climate change in China. Based on the environmental variables, distribution records, and chloroplast genomes, we modeled the potential distribution of Chinese Polyspora in the Last Glacial Maximum, middle Holocene, current, and future by using MaxEnt‐ArcGIS model and molecular phylogenetic method. The changes in the species distribution area, centroid shift, and ecological niche in each periods were analyzed to speculate the response modes of Chinese Polyspora to climate change in different periods. The most important environmental factor affecting the distribution of Polyspora was the precipitation of the driest month, ranging from 13 to 25 mm for the highly suitable habitats. At present, highly suitable distribution areas of Polyspora were mainly located in the south of 25°N, and had species‐specificity. The main glacial refugia of the Chinese Polyspora might be located in the Ailao, Gaoligong, and Dawei Mountains of Yunnan Province. Jinping County, Pingbian County, and the Maguan County at the border of China and Vietnam might be the species differentiation center of the Chinese Polyspora. Moderate climate warming in the future would be beneficial to the survival of P. axillaris, P. chrysandra, and P. speciosa. Background: So far, the prevalence of human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) type 1 and 2 in some highly populated countries such as China is still unknown. In this study, a multi-center nationwide serological survey was designed and performed, to reveal the seroprevalence of HTLV infection among Chinese blood donors. Results: Among 8,411,469 blood donors from 155 blood establishments, 435 were finally confirmed as HTLV carriers. The prevalence of HTLV infection in China varied in different provinces: Fujian had the highest prevalence of 36.240/100,000 (95% CI 31.990–41.050) and eleven provinces did not find HTLV-seropositive donors in the three years. no HTLV-2 infection was found. The overall prevalence of HTLV-1 in China decreased from 2016 to 2018. Female was identified as an independent risk factor of HTLV infection in China. Besides, seroconversion was observed in two of seven seroindeterminate donors 85 and 250 days after their last donation, respectively. Conclusions: The seroprevalence of HTLV infection in most areas of China among blood donors is quite low, but it varies significantly in different geographic areas. Background. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is the only serological method approved for blood screening in China. Automated chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) and electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) had been used in clinical laboratories but not applied to screen HIV among blood donors. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of ELISA, CLIA, and ECLIA, focusing on the feasibility of CLIA/ECLIA for blood screening. Method. 1029 blood donations from 14 blood centers screened by ELISA were enrolled in the study. All plasma samples were tested by eight ELISA assays in 16 blood centers, followed by the detection of CLIA and ECLIA methods in the National Center for Clinical Laboratories (NCCL), further confirmed by nucleic acid testing (NAT) and Western blot (WB). Results. Of 1029 samples, 136 were confirmed as HIV positive. CLIA and ECLIA assay had similar sensitivities with ELISAs but showed higher specificity (CLIA: 99.1%, 885/893; ECLIA: 99.0%, 884/893), concordance rate (CLIA: 99.2%, 1021/1029; ECLIA: 99.1%, 1020/1029), and positive predictive value (PPV) (CLIA: 94.4%, 136/144; ECLIA: 93.8%, 136/145) than most of ELISA kits (>5 ELISAs) (P < 0.05). Kappa values of CLIA (0.967) and ECLIA (0.963) were the highest among all the serologic assays. Among 451 samples with initial ELISA reactivity, 315 were negatives, of which 307 (97.5%) and 306 (97.1%) were detected as nonreactive by CLIA (8 nonspecific reactions) and ECLIA (9 nonspecific reactions), respectively. Conclusion. Compared with ELISA, CLIA and ECLIA are more specific and accurate in detecting HIV antibody/antigen and can keep more nonspecifically reactive donors detected by ELISA. Surveillance of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) molecular diversity and drug resistance-associated mutations (DRMs) among treatment-naïve blood donors is critical for monitoring viral evolution and blood safety. From 2016-2017, 199 plasma samples were collected from 24 blood centers and confirmed as HIV viral load positive or serologically reactive in National Centers for Clinical Laboratories (NCCL), of which 179 were sequenced and subtyped in the gag, protease (PR)-reverse transcriptase (RT), integrase (IN) and/or envelope (env) regions. DRMs in PR-RT and IN regions were analyzed in Stanford HIVdb Program. The majority of subtypes were circulating recombinant form (CRF) 07_BC (34.6%) and CRF01_AE (32.4%); many unique recombinant forms (URFs) (39, 21.8%) and other rare CRFs were observed in the study. Notably, CRF02_AG and CRF06_cpx strains typically found in Africa were firstly identified amongst Chinese blood donors. DRMs were common, with 28 of 179 (15.6%) specimens carrying DRMs, including the PR N88S and RT K103N mutations, which have been implicated in elevated resistance to antiretroviral drugs. Furthermore, 4 HIV-1 isolates (2.4%, 4/168) had surveillance drug-resistance mutation (SDRM), including 3 nonnucleosidereverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI) SDRMs (1 K101E, 2 K103N) and 1 protease inhibitor (PI) SDRM (M46I). The HIV viral diversity among blood donors observed in this study suggest that ongoing HIV-1 recombination is becoming progressively complex in China, and lots of DRMs found in the study exacerbate the primary drug resistance landscape, which highlight the necessity of timely genotypic drug resistance monitoring and molecular surveillance of HIV-1 among blood donors. Background: Demographic characteristic surveillance of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) among blood donors is crucial to formulating control strategies and preventing TTIs. This study aimed to investigate the demographic characteristics and social factors associated with TTIs among blood donors from 14 different blood centers or banks in China, covering almost the entire China.Methods: Demographic information of 1976 blood donations were obtained from the donor databases of 14 blood centers. The results of the samples were confirmed by the National Center for Clinical Laboratories (NCCL).Results: Of the 1976 donations, 928 were confirmed as TTI positive (HBV, 309; HCV, 162; HIV, 116; syphilis, 341), while 1048 tested negative. The differences in demographic distribution of TTI positive and negative donations regarding age, previous donation history, occupation, and education were statistically significant (p < 0.001). The factors mentioned above and marital status had associations with TTIs. Among the TTIs, only syphilis was related to ethnicity (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.309, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.378-3.868, p = 0.001), and only HBV positivity was not associated with marital status (HBV, aOR: 0.933, 95% CI: 0.670-1.299, p = 0.681). Gender and education were independent predictors of HIV and syphilis infections (p < 0.05).Conclusions: Demographic characteristics in this study included age, gender, previous donation history, ethnicity, marital status, occupation, and education, some of which were associated with TTIs. The most susceptible populations for TTIs were unmarried males and first-time donors aged between 26 and 55 years, and blood donors who were workers or company employees with low-educational level. With trade volume registering more than US$10 billion in recent years, Malaysia has already been China's largest Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) trading partner since 2008 and its third biggest Asian trading partner after Japan and South Korea. It is expected that China-Malaysia bilateral trade with an 8% annual growth rate will continue to expand, and this strong bilateral tie is set to be strengthened in the face of Chinese president Xi Jinping's efforts to enhance regional connectivity and especially maritime linkage by proposing the "One Belt One Road" (OBOR) construction. Malaysia is well placed, probably even better than most of its ASEAN neighbors, to embrace the opportunities brought about by the surge of infrastructure development and trade deals that is going to come with the progress in constructing the ocean-based Maritime Silk Road (MSR), one of the two initiatives of OBOR, the other being the land-based Silk Road Economic Belt. With Malaysia's traditional linkage with China's southeastern provinces of Guangdong and Fujian, and as the holder of the Strait of Malacca, Malaysia is occupying a key strategic location that can serve well as China's gateway to the ASEAN Economic Community. A statement made by the Malaysian transport minister has declared that a few ports in Malaysia has been identified to be part of the MSR. The close ties between both countries have resulted in cooperation in the transportation field such as railway projects and purchasing of trains from China. Indeed, Malaysia is in the process of developing inter-port city collaboration between China's Qinzhou Port and Malaysia's Kuantan Port. In recent years, China's Guangxi Beibu Gulf International Port Group has bought a 40% stake in Malaysia's Kuantan Port Consortium from the construction group IJM Group for a total of US$102 million. It is in such context and with due consideration of such developments that this paper will explore the prospects and challenges facing China-Malaysia cooperation within the overall framework of China-ASEAN strategic relations. Polyspora tiantangensis (Theaceae) is an endangered woody plant in southwestern China. In this study, we assembled complete chloroplast (cp) genome of P. tiantangensis based on the Illumina reads. The cp genome of P. tiantangensis is 157,057 bp in length, including a large single-copy (LSC) region of 86,593 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,284 bp, separated by two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 26,090 bp each. The cp genome encoded 132 genes including 87 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. The GC content of cp genome of P. tiantangensis is 37.3%. A total of 68 SSRs were discovered. Phylogenetic analysis of cp genomes from 26 species of Theaceae revealed that all species of Polyspora formed one monophyletic clade and P. tiantangensis was closely related with its congeneric species P. longicarpa with 100% bootstrap value. Background: There is limited data on the clinical outcome of patients with pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) pneumonia who received oseltamivir treatment, especially when the treatment was administered more than 48 hours after symptom onset. Methods: During the pandemic in 2009, a cohort of pH1N1 influenza pneumonia was built in China, and their clinical information was collected systematically, and analyzed with Cox models. Results: 920 adults and 541 children with pneumonia who didn't receive corticosteroids were analyzed. In-hospital mortality was higher in adults who did not receive antiviral therapy (18.2%) than those with who received oseltamivir ≤ 2days (2.9%), between 2-5 days (4.6%) and >5 days after illness onset (4.9%), p<0.01. A similar trend was observed in pediatric patients. Cox regression showed that at 60 days after symptoms onset, 11 patients (10.8%) who did not receive antivirals died versus 4 (1.8%), 18 (3.3%), and 23 (3.7%) patients whose oseltamivir treatment was started ≤ 2days, between 2-5days, and >5 days, respectively. For males patients, aged ≥14 years and baseline PaO2/FiO2<200, oseltamivir administration reduced the mortality risk by 92.1%, 88% and 83.5%, respectively. Higher doses of oseltamivir (>3.8 mg/kg/d) did not improve clinical outcome (mortality, higher dose 2.5% vs standard dose 2.8%, p>0.05). Conclusions: Antiviral therapy might reduce mortality of patients with pH1N1 pneumonia, even when initiated more than 48 hours after onset of illness. Abstract: This paper analyzes the technical, economic, and environmental characteristics of different pathways for supplying hydrogen to vehicles in China. A life-cycle accounting of “well-to-tank” hydrogen delivery for 11 different infrastructure pathways reveals different relative economic costs and environmental benefits. Coal-derived methanol as a hydrogen carrier appears particularly promising for China from an economic standpoint. The analysis considers three different infrastructure models: (1) “point-to-point” distribution from well to fueling station; (2) an “idealized city model” with radial and network distribution within a city grid; and (3) a model of Beijing infrastructure growth that evolves over time. The analytical results, the infrastructure models, and the practical case of Beijing provide policy-makers with new tools for hydrogen development strategies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The Global Plant Conservation Strategy of the Convention on Biological Diversity calls for "protection of 50% of the most important areas for plant diversity." All global biodiversity analyses have identified the mountains of northwestern Yunnan as a conservation priority for plant diversity. The challenge we were presented with was how to transform this sweeping global recognition into regional geographic priorities and measurable conservation action. This challenge is especially acute in Yunnan where there are no readily accessible data on the distribution and status of plant diversity, yet great conservation urgency due to the rapid pace of economic development. We used endangered and endemic species to represent plant diversity as a whole due to time and financial constraints. To identify conservation priorities, we relied on experts' knowledge, supplemented with a rapidly assembled plant diversity data base, rapid field assessments to fill knowledge gaps, and analyses of the spatial patterns of richness and habitat relationships. Ninety-eight endangered species and 703 endemic species occur in the project area. Experts identified nine Plant Diversity Conservation Areas for northwestern Yunnan, including eight specific geographies and one priority habitat. We found that the current nature reserve system is serving an important role in plant diversity protection, even though many of the reserves were not specifically designated for plant diversity considerations. This project provided a means for scientific experts to directly contribute to conservation decision-making by government and Non-Government Organizations, and essential information for the plant conservation in Northwestern Yunnan. Rosa lucidissima is a critically endangered wild rose species endemic to China with both ornamental value and medicinal usefulness. The complete chloroplast genome sequence of R. lucidissima was generated by de novo assembly using whole genome next-generation sequencing to provide genomic data for further conservation genetics of this species and for phylogenetic analysis of genus Rosa. The complete chloroplast genome was 156,588 bp in length, including two inverted repeat (IR) regions (26,048 bp), a small single-copy (SSC) region (18,765 bp), and a large single-copy (LSC) region (85,713 bp). The chloroplast genome encoded 129 genes, including 84 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The overall GC content of the whole genome was 37.25%. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) increasing molecular diversity and emergence of drug resistant mutants remain a major concern in China. Enfuvirtide (ENF/T-20) is the first entry inhibitor used in patients failing highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). However, data on HIV-1 gp41genetic diversity and primary ENF resistance-associated mutations among treatment-naïve patients in China is limited. The objective was to identify molecular diversity and ENF resistance patterns of HIV-1 in southern China, using envelope (env) gp41 sequences and bioinformatics tools, which may help optimize antiretroviral therapy. From November 2018 to January 2019, 439 blood plasma samples from ENF-naïve patients were collected from Shenzhen, Wuhan and Chongqing, of which 396 HIV env regions were sequenced and subtyped, and were performed the analysis of drug resistance-associated mutations (DRMs). The main subtypes were circulating recombinant form (CRF) 01_AE (30.6 %) and CRF07_BC (48.7 %). CRF55_01B had been the fourth subtype in the study, and many rare CRFs were observed. Notably, CRF02_AG and CRF_BF strains typically found in Africa and US respectively were identified amongst Chinese patients. Known DRMs were detected in 27.5 % (109/396) of ENF treatment-naïve patients. One major DRM (L44 M), many secondary DRMs (including N126 K, E137 K, S138A), and lots of polymorphisms were found in the study, which have been proved to elevate resistance to ENF. HIV-1 molecular diversity was observed in the study, which indicating that HIV-1 variability is becoming increasingly complex in southern China. A diverse set of primary DRMs discovered in this study described the serious threat to ART, which reminds us the urgent need of timely surveillance of HIV-1 viral diversity and drug resistance in China. Water resources are important for agricultural, industrial, and urban development. In this paper, we analyzed the influence of rainfall and snowfall on variations in terrestrial water storage (TWS) in Northeast China from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) gravity satellite data, GlobSnow snow water equivalent product, and ERA5-land monthly total precipitation, snowfall, and snow depth data. This study revealed the main composition and variation characteristics of TWS in Northeast China. We found that GRACE provided an effective method for monitoring large areas of stable seasonal snow cover and variations in TWS in Northeast China at both seasonal and interannual scales. On the seasonal scale, although summer rainfall was 10 times greater than winter snowfall, the terrestrial water storage in Northeast China peaked in winter, and summer rainfall brought about only a sub-peak, 1 month later than the maximum rainfall. On the interannual scale, TWS in Northeast China was controlled by rainfall. The correlation analysis results revealed that the annual fluctuations of TWS and rainfall in Northeast China appear to be influenced by ENSO (EI Niño–Southern Oscillation) events with a lag of 2–3 years. In addition, this study proposed a reconstruction model for the interannual variation in TWS in Northeast China from 2003 to 2016 on the basis of the contemporary terrestrial water storage and rainfall data. As reported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the world has been greening over the last two decades, with the highest greening occurring in China and India. The increasing vegetation will increase plant tissue accumulation and water storage capacity, and all of these variations will cause mass change. In this study, we found that the mass change related to greening in Southern China could be confirmed by Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) observations. The mean mass change rate detected by GRACE is 6.7 ± 0.8 mm/yr in equivalent water height during 2003–2016 in our study region. This is consistent with the sum of vegetation tissue, soil water and groundwater change calculated using multi-source data. The vegetation accumulation is approximately 3.8 ± 1.3 mm/yr, which is the major contribution to region mass change. Considering the rapid increase of syphilis infections in several countries including China, searching for a screening test with sufficient sensitivity and specificity is extremely urgent. The current study mainly researched the performance for Treponema pallidum (TP) detection by electro-chemiluminescence immunoassays (ECLIA), chemiluminescence immunoassays (CLIA) and four commercially available ELISA assays commonly used in China. 1372 plasma samples collected from blood centers/banks were tested with 6 assays in 8 laboratories with the Western blot (WB) or TP particle agglutination assay (TPPA) as confirmatory tests. With the WB or TPPA as confirmatory test, the ECLIA demonstrated the highest specificity (95.2%) and Kappa coefficient (0.915), but lowest sensitivity (97.2%) compared with the other 5 assays. While the Wantai-ELISA showed the highest sensitivity (99.6%) among the 6 assays. Sensitivities were found to be significantly increased when any two of the six assays were combined for TP detection. Our study demonstrated that the Wantai-ELISA combined with the ECLIA or the KHB-ELISA or the InTec-ELISA would increase the sensitivities up to 100%. Further analysis showed that the specificities and positive predictive values were both 100.0% when cut-off of S/CO values were served as 15.42 for the ECLIA and 7.14 for the CLIA, indicating that samples under these conditions can be directly considered as positive without confirmation. The CLIA and the ECLIA are more specific than ELISA to detect TP antibodies. However, ELISA is a sensitive method, especially in combination with the CLIA or the ECLIA or another types of ELISA, suitable for the routine screening of blood donations in China. • ELISA is sensitive and suitable for the routine screening of blood donations. • The S/CO values over 5.88 for ECLIA and 7.14 for CLIA can be considered as positive. • Most of the indeterminate samples were IgM reactive, which required further investigations. Canine circovirus (CanineCV) is a single-stranded DNA virus that circulates in dogs and wild carnivores around the world. It has been suggested to be associated with diseases of respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, though its pathogenic potential remains unclear. Currently, CanineCV is divided into six genotypes (genotype 1−6), and genotypes 2, 3, and 4 have been described in China. In this study, 359 blood samples from pet dogs with or without clinical signs were collected in Harbin city. After PCR screening, a total of 34 samples were tested positive for CanineCV, and nine full-length genome sequences were recovered from positive samples. Pairwise sequence comparison showed that they shared 82.4–99.3% genome-wide identity with other CanineCVs available in GenBank. Additionally, recombination events were detected, all of which were determined to be associated with sequences obtained in China. The reconstructed phylogenetic tree based on the recombination-free complete genome sequences revealed that the complete genome sequences generated herein were clustered into genotypes 1 and 3. Furthermore, purifying selection was the dominant evolutionary pressure acting on the genomes of CanineCV. Many manganese (Mn) carbonate deposits over geologic history are often closely associated with black shales. However, the mechanism(s) by which the Mn entered the sediments remains controversial because on one hand oxygenated waters are required for primary Mn(IV) oxide formation but on the other hand black shales generally form under reducing conditions. China hosts some of the world's largest black shale-hosted Mn deposits, for example, the Carboniferous Ortokarnash and Malkantu Mn deposits in the Malkansu region, offering a good opportunity to revisit the genesis of black shale-hosted Mn carbonate deposits. Here, we present the first coupled, systematic paleoredox and hydrographic reconstruction of those deposits with the aim of elucidating the redox-state of the depositional basin at the time of their initial deposition. The Mn ore beds in this region are hosted within laminated, organic-rich mudstones (i.e., black shales) reflective of a relatively deep-water depositional environment. The Mn ores are comprised of the Mn(II) carbonate minerals (rhodochrosite and Ca-rhodochrosite), with minor alabandite, pyrite, and monazite. Multiple independent lines of evidence, including positive shale-normalized Ce anomalies (average 3.0), negative δ13C VPDB values (average −11.55 ‰), and negative δ98Mo NIST+0.25 values (average −1.07 ‰), indicate that the Mn(II) carbonate ores were formed during diagenesis via the coupled oxidation of organic matter and reduction of Mn(IV) oxides originally deposited from an oxygenated water column. However, in apparent contradiction, highly reactive iron to total iron (Fe HR /Fe T ; average 0.66) and pyrite iron to highly reactive iron (Fe Py /Fe HR ; average 0.71) ratios, combined with a high abundance of small framboidal pyrites (mean diameter ∼5 μm) with narrow size ranges (standard deviations <2 μm), suggest that the associated black shales were deposited in euxinic (H 2 S-bearing) bottom waters. Euxinia resulted from sluggish water mass circulation, with sedimentary Mo/TOC ratios indicating a relatively strong hydrologic restriction. During this stage, dissolved Mn(II) would have accumulated in euxinic waters but not become permanently fixed into sediments, as indicated by higher degrees of enrichment for Mo over U and lower Mo isotope values than coeval seawater recorded in the black shales. These reveal an active Mn(IV) oxide shuttle across a redox-stratified water column. Combined, the Mn ore intervals document sharp benthic oxygenation of euxinic bottom waters, a process that might be induced by the periodic incursions of oxic seawater associated with eustatic sea level rises. This model is supported by the Mo isotopic characteristics of the Mn carbonate ores, which indicate original Mn oxide precipitation from an overlying water with Mo isotopic composition close to coeval open seawater (minimum δ98Mo NIST+0.25 of 1.9 ‰). In contrast to the generalized "bathtub ring" model envisaging that the black shale-hosted Mn deposits were formed at shallow basin margins, our results highlight that they were more likely formed by in-situ ventilation of anoxic (especially euxinic) deep waters of basin center settings. In this regard, we suggest that the ventilation model better explains the close association of Mn carbonate ores with black shales, and has profound implications for understanding the paleoredox framework of otherwise Mn-rich black shale successions. There is an increasing consensus that microbes play a critical role in the genesis of sedimentary manganese (Mn) carbonate deposits. However, compelling evidence for the microbial involvement during sedimentary Mn metallogenesis remains insufficient, and the specific effects of microbial mediation need to be further elucidated. To advance our understanding of the microbial Mn metallogenesis, multi-scale petrographic observations and high-resolution mineralogical analyses (mainly based on Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and Raman spectroscopy) were conducted on the Carboniferous black shale-hosted Malkansu and limestone-hosted Zhaosu Mn ore deposits in northwestern China. Results show that the Mn ore samples are characterized by finely laminated texture with μm-scale cyclic variations of microbe-associated minerals including rhodochrosite, apatite, quartz, and organic matter as well. These features indicate the ubiquity of microbial mats during Mn mineralization. Microbial involvement is also supported by Mn carbonate aggregates with variable morphologies (filamentous with pearl necklace-like inner forms resembling vermiform morphologies and spheroidal, coccoid-like forms), as well as the annular organic matter that resembles bacterial cells. The cyclic occurrence of trace amounts of remnant Mn oxides verify that primary Mn accumulation took place under oxic bottom waters. The negative co-variation between Mn carbonates and organic matter on Raman profiles suggests that the former was formed during diagenesis via organic matter decomposition coupled with Mn oxide reduction. Combined with previous experimental simulations and natural observations, a two-step microbially mediated Mn metallogenic model is tentatively proposed for the studied Mn deposits: (1) Mn(II)-oxidizing bacteria effectively catalyzed the deposition of considerable Mn oxides under oxygenated bottom water columns, a process that was simultaneously sustained by oxygenic microbial mats such as cyanobacteria; (2) Buried Mn oxides were reduced by highly reactive organic matter sourced from dead biomats of Mn(II)-oxidizing bacteria and benthic phototrophs, a process mediated by Mn(IV)-reducing bacteria which not only promoted the reaction rate but also served as nucleation sites for Mn carbonate minerals. This model can also help to explain the occurrence of diverse authigenic accessory minerals (e.g., quartz, apatite, and talc) and remarkable enrichments of several specific elements (e.g., Co, Ce, and Mo) in the studied Mn ores, which were closely linked to the decomposed cells and extracellular polymeric substance (EPS). By comparing with previous microbial investigations on Mn deposits over geological history, we further highlight the fundamental role of microorganisms in regulating the formation of economic Mn carbonate deposits. Abstract: Infrastructure issues pose more challenges and uncertainties for hydrogen than other alternative “fuels” such as biofuels and electricity. A key challenge of developing a future commercial hydrogen economy is how the infrastructure will be best designed and operated as time progresses, given that numerous technological options exist and are still in development for hydrogen production, storage, distribution and dispensing. This paper presents a generic optimization-based model for the strategic dynamic investment planning and design of future hydrogen supply chains. The features and capabilities of the model are illustrated through a detailed case study of China. The high prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and the resulting burden of the disease are significant issues to public health worldwide. Although direct-acting antiviral drugs (DAAs) with good tolerance and bioavailability are available, resistance-associated substitutions (RASs) often jeopardize the successful sustainment of virological responses in HCV treatment. High-frequency baseline RASs in treatment-naïve patients can lead to failures in DAA treatment. Clinical data on HCV RASs in patients from China are limited and require investigations. 262 HCV RNA positive plasma from Chinese blood donors were genotyped and amplified with subtype-specific primers for NS3 and NS5A regions. RASs were analyzed using Geno2pheno. The codon usage of each resistance-associated substitution was calculated for genetic barrier analysis. The two main subtypes in mainland China were 1b and 2a, followed by subtype 6a, 3b, 3a, and 1a. In NS3 region of 1b subtype, substitutions (T54S, V55A, Y56F, Q80 K/L, S122 G/T, R117 H/C, V170I and S174A) were present in 89.7% (96/107) of the samples. Other RASs (M28L, R30Q, P58 L/S and Y93H) were observed in 22.1% (25/113) of the samples in NS5A region. A crucial RAS, Q80K, and two other mutations (S122G + V170I) was identified in the same sequence, which reduced its susceptibility to protease inhibitor ASV and resulted in resistance to SMV. In NS5A, Y93H was detected in 9.7% (11/113) of the 1b samples, leading to medium-to-high level resistance to all six commercialized NS5A inhibitors. S122G-NS3 and Y93H-NS5A occurred simultaneously in 38.1% (7/22) of the samples with mutations in both two regions. Moreover, codon usage of S122G-NS3 and Y93H-NS5A revealed that both variants had the lowest genetic barrier and required only one transition to confer resistance. Low genetic barriers facilitated the generation of resistance mutants and threated the efficacy of DAA regimens. Malnutrition and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is frequently present in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC). However, the direct relationship between SIBO and nutrition status in the LC patients has not been elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there was an association between nutrition status, evaluated by the subjective global assessment (SGA) and SIBO in patients with Hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) related cirrhosis. A total of 120 patients with HBV or HCV-related cirrhosis and 30 healthy controls were included. Nutritional status was determined according to SGA and anthropometry. All patients and healthy controls underwent a glucose hydrogen breath test for SIBO. The prevalence of malnutrition for the patients with HBV or HCV related cirrhosis ranged 19.4%-60% in China. The highest prevalence of malnutrition was detected by SGA, the lowest by triceps skinfold thickness. The frequency of SIBO was significantly higher in the malnourished (SGA-B/C) than in the well-nourished (SGA-A) patients with HBV or HCV related cirrhosis [41/72 (56.9%) vs 12/48 (25.0%) (p=0.001)]. Univariate analysis showed that SIBO, ascites, and Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) class were associated with malnutrition. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that SIBO [odds ratio (OR) 8.10; p=0.002] and ascites (OR 4.56; p=0.022) were independently associated with the occurrence of malnutrition (SGA-B/C) in the same subjects. SIBO is independently related to the occurrence of malnutrition (SGA-B/C) in patients with HBV or HCV cirrhosis. Background In May 2015, an imported case of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection occurred in China, so rapid and reliable diagnosis of suspected cases was necessary. Objectives An external quality assessment (EQA) program for the molecular detection of MERS-CoV was organized by the National Center for Clinical Laboratories (NCCL). Study design MS2 virus-like particles (VLPs) encapsulating specific RNA sequences of MERS-CoV were prepared as positive specimens. The assessment panel, which comprised of three negative and seven positive samples with different concentrations of VLPs, was distributed to 56 laboratories from 16 provinces, municipalities, or autonomous regions for molecular detection. Results Among the received data sets, three employed an in-house-developed real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) assay and the others applied various commercial rRT-PCR kits. Overall, the majority of laboratories (46/56, 82.1%) could achieve 100% accuracy for MERS-CoV detection, but three laboratories (5.4%) still had room for improvement. Consequently, all negative samples were identified correctly, reaching 100% specificity. The false-negative rate was 3.1%, and most of the false-negative results were obtained from samples with relatively low concentration, indicating an urgent need to improve detection in weak-positive specimens. Conclusions The majority of participants possessed reliable diagnostic capacity for the detection of MERS-CoV. Moreover, EQA is indispensable because it can help enhance the diagnostic capability for the surveillance of MERS-CoV infections and allow comparison of the results among different laboratories. Upadacitinib is an oral new selective JAK1 inhibitor that has been approved for treating adult patients with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. However, a growing number of studies are needed on the effectiveness of upadacitinib in the treatment of acute severe ulcerative colitis. This study was mainly aimed to describe the clinical and endoscopic effectiveness of upadacitinib 45 mg in Chinese acute severe ulcerative colitis patients following eight weeks of treatment. In this study, we examined all patients with acute severe ulcerative colitis from Xijing IBD Center, Xi'an, China, with acute severe ulcerative colitis. All patients were initially given oral upadacitinib 45 mg. Clinical indicators, C-reactive protein, and erythrocyte sedimentation rates were collected. Clinical response and clinical remission were assessed using modified Mayo. Endoscopic evaluation was performed carried out using the Mayo Endoscopic Score and Ulcerative colitis endoscopic index of severity score. A total of 14 patients who received upadacitinib were included in the study period. All patients exhibited a clinical response to 45 mg upadacitinib initially. All patients completed the 8-week induction. The clinical remission rate was 28.6% after eight weeks. Two patients revealed endoscopic remission at 14.3%. The pathology improved in 50.0% of patients. The 8-week surgical resection rate was 7.1%, with the 16-week surgical resection rate being 14.3%. Adverse events included herpes simplex virus infection and increased thrombin time. The results of our study support the short-term effectiveness and safety of upadacitinib in acute severe ulcerative colitis, providing new choices for patients' treatment. Depression is a relevant mental illness affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide. As urbanization accelerates, agglomeration of populations has altered individual social network distances and life crowding, which in turn affects depressive prevalence. However, the association between depression and population agglomeration (PA) remains controversial. This study aims to explore whether and how PA could influence individual depression. Based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) 2018, the empirical results showed that there was a U-shaped association between PA and individual CES-D scores. As PA increases, the risk of depression first decreases and then increases. CES-D was lowest at moderate aggregation. Dialect diversity (DD) was positively related to the incidence of individual depression. The higher the DD, the higher the risk of depression. Meanwhile, DD also played a moderating role in the association between PA and individual depression. Investigating the wind speed flow field and aerodynamic characteristics of shelterbelts with different structural features is of significant importance for the rational arrangement of shelterbelts and the mitigation of wind-blown sand disasters. Considering five cross-sectional shapes of shelterbelts (rectangle, windward right-angle triangle, leeward right-angle triangle, isosceles triangle, and parabolic) and four layout forms (single shelterbelt, L-shaped network, U-shaped network, and rectangular network), we conducted computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations using the large eddy simulation (LES) turbulence model to understand mean wind speed flow field and turbulence structure of shelterbelts with different structural features, and investigated the effects of shelterbelt cross-sectional shapes and layout forms on windbreak indicators, such as protection distance and area. We considered tree canopies as porous media and conducted simulation with the 'Tsujimatsu' shelterbelt in Japan with a total height ( H ) of 7 m, canopy height of 5.8 m, and a canopy base width of 2 m. The results showed that the average relative errors of mean wind speed and turbulent kinetic energy at different heights obtained by numerical simulations and field measurement were small, being 5.5% and 12%, respectively, indicating that the porous medium canopy model successfully reproduced the mean wind speed and turbulent kinetic energy in the leeward area of the shelterbelt. The rectangular cross-section shelterbelt, with the largest canopy volume, significantly obstructed airflow. The mean wind speed and turbulent kinetic energy showed a notable reduction in the leeward area near the shelterbelt, especially in the upper region ( z ≥0.5 H , where z denoted the height), showing the largest protection range. The parabolic cross-section shelterbelt ranked second in terms of protection range, followed by shelterbelts with windward right-angle, leeward right-angle, and isosceles triangular cross-sections. In the downstream area where horizontal distance x ≥10 H , the mean wind speed and turbulent kinetic energy of shelterbelts with different cross-sectional shapes tended to be the same. Comparing the flow field structures of single shelterbelts and L-shaped, U-shaped, and rectangular networks, it revealed that the more shelterbelts oriented perpendicular to the incoming wind speed, the more pronounced the wind speed attenuation behind the canopy, a longer distance would be required for airflow to recover to the incoming wind speed. In contrast, the wind protection effect of shelterbelts paralleled to the wind direction was extremely limited, making the U-shaped and rectangular networks more effective in wind protection than single shelterbelts and L-shaped networks. The findings would provide references for the structural configuration and optimal layout of shelterbelt systems.

Transpiration is a significant part of water cycle in forest ecosystems, influenced by meteorological factors and potentially constrained by soil moisture. We used Granier-type thermal dissipation probes to monitor xylem sap flow dynamics of three tree species ( Quercus liaotungensis , Platycladus orientalis , and Robinia pseudoacacia ) in a semi-arid loess hilly region, and to continuously monitor the key meteorological factors and soil water content (SWC). We established the SWC thresholds delineating soil moisture-limited and -unlimited sap flow responses to transpiration drivers. The results showed that mean sap flux density ( J s ) of Q. liaotungensis and R. pseudoacacia was significantly higher during period with higher soil moisture compared to lower soil moisture, while the difference in J s for P. orientalis between the two periods was not significant. We used an exponential saturation function to fit the relationship between the J s of each tree species and the integrated transpiration variable (VT) which reflected solar radiation and vapor pressure deficit. The difference in the fitting curve parameters indicated that there were distinct response patterns between J s and VT under different soil moisture conditions. There was a threshold in soil moisture limitation on sap flow for each species, which was identified as 0.129 m 3 ·m -3 for Q. liaotungensis , 0.116 m 3 ·m -3 for P. orientalis , and 0.108 m 3 ·m -3 for R. pseudoacacia . Below the thresholds, J s was limited by soil moisture. Above these points, the normalized sensitivity index (NSI) for Q. liaotungensis and P. orientalis reached saturation, while that of R. pseudoacacia did not reach saturation but exhibited a significant reduction in moisture limitation. Among the three species, P. orientalis was the most capable of overcoming soil moisture constraints.

Background: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of recently developed tumor marker clinical kits in China, with the aim of encouraging local medical technology innovation and thus narrowing the research and development gap with foreign kits., Methods: The newly established reagent kits were analyzed on the TESMI F3999-Luminex200 flow lattice instrument to verify precision, sensitivity (blank limit), linearity, anti-interference ability, carry-over contamination rate, hook effect, and reference interval verification. Additionally, the newly established reagent kits were compared to other commercially available detection kits (reference reagent kits) to analyze the correlation between the two types of kits., Results: The intra-assay and inter-assay precision had coefficients of variations (CVs) less than 3.50% and 6.91%, respectively. The tumor marker blank limits were lower than the manufacturer's statement. The newly established reagent kits demonstrated excellent linearity (r > 0.99). Rheumatoid factor, triglycerides, bilirubin, and hemoglobin did not have significant interference with the determination of tumor markers. The carry-over contamination rates were all much lower than 3%. At extremely high concentrations of AFP (277,335 ng/mL and 1,031,424 ng/mL), the measured tumor marker values were higher than the upper limit of the linear range and no hook effect occurred. The reference interval was suitable for use in clinical laboratory settings. Correlation analysis indicated a satisfactory relevance and consistency between the newly developed reagent kits and reference reagent kits, with correlation coefficients of r > 0.967 among 654 patients and healthy individuals., Conclusions: The newly developed reagent kits for tumor markers performed well in all evaluated parameters, having the potential for clinical promotion and application.

Hypertension, a prevalent chronic disease, has been associated with increased COVID-19 severity. To promote the COVID-19 booster vaccination of hypertensive patients, this study investigated the willingness to receive boosters and the related influencing factors based on the health belief model (HBM model). Between June and October 2022, 453 valid questionnaires were collected across three Chinese cities. The willingness to receive a booster vaccination was 72.2%. The main factors that influenced the willingness of patients with hypertension to receive a booster shot were male (χ 2  = 7.008, p  = .008), residence in rural (χ 2  = 4.778, p  = .029), being in employment (χ 2  = 7.232, p  = .007), taking no or less antihypertensive medication (χ 2  = 9.372, p  = .025), with less hypertension-related comorbidities (χ 2  = 35.888, p  < .0001), and did not have any other chronic diseases (χ 2  = 28.476, p  < .0001). Amid the evolving COVID-19 landscape, the willingness to receive annual booster vaccination was 59.4%, and employment status (χ 2  = 10.058, p  = .002), and presence of other chronic diseases (χ 2  = 14.256, p  < .0001) are associated with the willingness of annual booster vaccination. Respondents with higher perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived self-efficacy, and lower perceived barriers were more willing to receive booster shots. The mean and median value of willingness to pay (WTP) for a dose of booster were 53.17 CNY and 28.31 CNY. Concerns regarding booster safety and the need for professional advice were prevalent. Our findings highlight the importance of promoting booster safety knowledge and health-related management among hypertensive individuals through professional organizations and medical specialists.

Innovation is the primary driving force for development; the high-quality development of resource-based cities is ultimately driven by innovation. We constructed an innovation-driven high-quality development system for resource-based cities, including resource, economic, social, and environmental subsystems; according to the interaction between the internal elements of each subsystem, a dynamic model of the innovation-driven high-quality development system of resource-based cities was established, and we selected policy adjustment variables to simulate six policy scenarios. Thus, we simulated high-quality development trends from 2008 to 2035. The results indicate that the policy scenario of increasing innovation investment can promote high-quality development; the policy of increasing innovation investment has a significant effect on economic growth, while it damages the urban ecological environment, and the ideal policy scenario is the environmental priority mode, which appropriately increases innovation investment and reasonably allocates it within the system.

Polyspora Sweet (Theaceae) are winter ornamental landscape plants native to southern and southeastern Asia, some of which have medicinal value. The chloroplast (cp) genome data of Polyspora are scarce, and the gene evolution and interspecific relationship are still unclear. In this study, we sequenced and annotated Polyspora chrysandra cp genome and combined it with previously published genomes for other Chinese Polyspora species. The results showed that cp genomes of six Chinese Polyspora varied in length between 156,452 bp (P. chrysandra) and 157,066 bp (P. speciosa), but all contained 132 genes, with GC content of 37.3%, and highly similar genes distribution and codon usage. A total of eleven intergenic spacer regions were found having the highest levels of divergence, and eight divergence hotspots were identified as molecular markers for Phylogeography and genetic diversity studies in Polyspora. Gene selection pressure suggested that five genes were subjected to positive selection. Phylogenetic relationships among Polyspora species based on the complete cp genomes were supported strongly, indicating that the cp genomes have the potential to be used as super barcodes for further analysis of the phylogeny of the entire genus. The cp genomes of Chinese Polyspora species will provide valuable information for species identification, molecular breeding and evolutionary analysis of genus Polyspora., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

The emerging of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) caused COVID-19 pandemic. The first case of COVID-19 was reported at early December in 2019 in Wuhan City, China. To examine specific antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in biological samples before December 2019 would give clues when the epidemic of SARS-CoV-2 might start to circulate in populations. We obtained all 88,517 plasmas from 76,844 blood donors in Wuhan between 1 September and 31 December 2019. We first evaluated the pan-immunoglobin (pan-Ig) against SARS-CoV-2 in 43,850 samples from 32,484 blood donors with suitable sample quality and enough volume. Two hundred and sixty-four samples from 213 donors were pan-Ig reactive, then further tested IgG and IgM, and validated by neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. Two hundred and thirteen samples (from 175 donors) were only pan-Ig reactive, 8 (from 4 donors) were pan-Ig and IgG reactive, and 43 (from 34 donors) were pan-Ig and IgM reactive. Microneutralization assay showed all negative results. In addition, 213 screened reactive donors were analyzed and did not show obviously temporal or regional tendency, but the distribution of age showed a difference compared with all tested donors. Then we reviewed SARS-CoV-2 antibody results from these donors who donated several times from September 2019 to June 2020, partly tested in a previous published study, no one was found a significant increase in S/CO of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. Our findings showed no SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies existing among blood donors in Wuhan, China before 2020, indicating no evidence of transmission of COVID-19 before December 2019 in Wuhan, China., (©The Author(s) 2022. In this study, we investigate the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among blood donors in the cities of Wuhan, Shenzhen, and Shijiazhuang in China. From January to April 2020, 38,144 healthy blood donors in the three cities were tested for total antibody against SARS-CoV-2 followed by pseudotype SARS-CoV-2 neutralization tests, IgG, and IgM antibody testing. Finally, a total of 398 donors were confirmed positive. The age- and sex-standardized SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among 18-60 year-old adults (18-65 year-old in Shenzhen) was 2.66% (95% CI: 2.24%-3.07%) in Wuhan, 0.033% (95% CI: 0.0029%-0.267%) in Shenzhen, and 0.0028% (95% CI: 0.0001%-0.158%) in Shijiazhuang, respectively. Female sex and older-age were identified to be independent risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity among blood donors in Wuhan. As most of the population of China remained uninfected during the early wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, effective public health measures are still certainly required to block viral spread before a vaccine is widely available.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA could be detected in the blood of infected cases. From February 9, all blood establishments in Hubei province, China, implemented nucleic acid testing (NAT) for SARS-CoV-2 RNA among blood donors to ensure blood safety., Study Design and Methods: Nucleic acid test screening individually (ID) or by minipool (MP) testing was performed according to the manufacturer's instructions. Inactivated culture supernatant of SARS-CoV-2-infected Vero cells was quantified by droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) and series diluted with negative plasma to evaluate the assay's performance., Results: The limit of detection of the kit for MP testing was 62.94 and 33.14 copies/mL for N and ORF1ab region, respectively. ID testing could achieve 3.87 and 4.85 copies/mL for two regions using 1600 μL of plasma. Coefficients of variations of two different concentrations of reference samples were all less than 5% in MP testing. As of April 30, 2020, a total of 98,342 blood donations including 87,095 whole blood donations and 11,247 platelet donations were tested by ID or MP testing, and no RNAemia was found. In addition, Hubei province suffered precipitously decreased blood supply, especially in February: 86% reduction compared with the same period of 2019., Conclusion: Nucleic acid test screening of SARS-CoV-2 on blood donations is suitable in blood establishments using the commercial real-time PCR detection kit based on available instruments. Purpose: Although several trials have confirmed the treatment efficacy of induction chemotherapy followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) in locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) from endemic area of China, little is known about the best regime for induction chemotherapy in non-endemic region. This study compared the treatment effect of Gemcitabine and cisplatin (GP) versus docetaxel and cisplatin (TP) followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy in locoregionally advanced NPC from non-endemic area of China., Materials and Methods: A total of 196 locoregionally advanced NPC patients were enrolled in this study, with 142 and 54 patients in TP and GP followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy groups. The primary endpoint was treatment response of induction chemotherapy. The secondary endpoints included disease-free survival. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to evaluate the efficacy between treatment groups., Results: The median follow-up time was 45.5 months (range: 6-60.5 months). During induction chemotherapy course, GP contributed higher treatment response rate than TP (68.1% vs. 47.1%, p = 0.007). Patients in GP group had better DFS and LRFS than those in TP group (3-year and 5-year DFS, 86.8% and 82.5% vs. 71.7% and 68%, p = 0.036; 3-year and 5-year LRFS, 96.2% and 96.2% vs. 90.5% and 82.8%, p = 0.03). No significant difference of adverse events was observed between two treatment groups in the whole course., Conclusion: This study suggested that GP followed by CCRT was better than TP followed by CCRT in improving survival outcomes of locoregionally advanced NPC patients from non-endemic area of China.

The fourth outbreak of the Coronaviruses, known as the COVID-19, has occurred in Wuhan city of Hubei province in China in December 2019. We propose a time-varying sparse vector autoregressive (VAR) model to retrospectively analyze and visualize the dynamic transmission routes of this outbreak in mainland China over January 31-February 19, 2020. Our results demonstrate that the influential inter-location routes from Hubei have become unidentifiable since February 4, 2020, whereas the self-transmission in each provincial-level administrative region (location, hereafter) was accelerating over February 4-15, 2020. From February 16, 2020, all routes became less detectable, and no influential transmissions could be identified on February 18 and 19, 2020. Such evidence supports the effectiveness of government interventions, including the travel restrictions in Hubei. Implications of our results suggest that in addition to the origin of the outbreak, virus preventions are of crucial importance in locations with the largest migrant workers percentages (e.g., Jiangxi, Henan and Anhui) to controlling the spread of COVID-19.

With the outbreak of unknown pneumonia in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, a new coronavirus, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), aroused the attention of the entire world. The current outbreak of infections with SARS-CoV-2 is termed Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 in China as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Two other coronavirus infections-SARS in 2002-2003 and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in 2012-both caused severe respiratory syndrome in humans. All 3 of these emerging infectious diseases leading to a global spread are caused by β-coronaviruses. Although coronaviruses usually infect the upper or lower respiratory tract, viral shedding in plasma or serum is common. Therefore, there is still a theoretical risk of transmission of coronaviruses through the transfusion of labile blood products. Because more and more asymptomatic infections are being found among COVID-19 cases, considerations of blood safety and coronaviruses have arisen especially in endemic areas. In this review, we detail current evidence and understanding of the transmission of SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2 through blood products as of February 10, 2020, and also discuss pathogen inactivation methods on coronaviruses., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Background: Currently, creatinine- or cystatin C-based glomerular filtration rate (GFR) estimation equation has been recommended to assess GFR in CKD patients. However, it is still obscure whether those equations performed consistently outstandingly in Chinese population., Methods: The equations were validated in a population totaling 632 participants (mean age 61.6 ± 12.3 years). The estimated GFR (eGFR) calculated separately by six equations (C-MDRD, C cys , C scr-cys , CKD-EPI scr , CKD-EPI cys , and CKD-EPI scr-cys equations) was compared with the reference GFR (rGFR) measured by the 99m Tc-DTPA renal dynamic imaging method. Participants were divided into age and rGFR specific subgroups., Results: CKD-EPI scr-cys equation had a larger area under receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC AUC ) and relative higher sensitivity (79.8 %) and specificity (93 %) to diagnose CKD. CKD-EPI scr-cys and CKD-EPI cys equations appeared to be more accurate with higher proportion of eGFR within 30 % of rGFR (P 30 ) value. Those two equations performed as well in older people as in the younger population. The CKD-EPI scr-cys equation acquired the highest P 30 (80.9 %) in subgroups with rGFR ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m 2 , while the CKD-EPI cys equation yielded the best performance in the rGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m 2 subgroup., Conclusion: CKD-EPI scr-cys formula had better capability to accurately evaluate GFR in the participants CKD stages 1-2 in Chinese ethnic. The application of the cystatin C-based equations may be the optimal one for patients of moderately to severely injured GFR. Considering the accuracy in the entire range of participants less ideally, the additional of the Chinese racial factor is assumed to be essential.

In 2014, Ebola hemorrhagic fever broke out in West Africa. As contact between China and West Africa is frequent, the possibility that Ebola virus would enter China was high. Thus, an external assessment of the quality of Ebola virus detection was organized by the National Center for Clinical Laboratories in China. Virus-like particles encapsulating known sequences of epidemic strains of Ebola virus from 2014 were prepared as positive quality controls. The sample panel, which was composed of seven positive and three negative samples, was dispatched to 19 laboratories participating in this assessment of Ebola virus detection. Accurate detection was reported at 14 of the 19 participating laboratories, with a sensitivity of 91.43% and a specificity of 100%. Four participants (21.05%) reported false-negative results and were classified as "acceptable." One participant (5.26%) did not detect any positive samples and was thus classified as "improvable." Based on the results returned, the ability to detect weakly positive Ebola specimens should be improved. Furthermore, commercial assays and the standard primers offered by the Chinese Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were found to be most accurate and dependable for Ebola detection. A two-target detection approach is recommended for Ebola screening; this approach could reduce the probability of false-negative results. Additionally, standardization of operations and punctual adjustment of instruments are necessary for the control and prevention of Ebola virus.

Background: Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels are usually tightly regulated within a narrow physiologic range. Variation of FPG levels is clinically important and is strongly heritable. Several lines of evidence suggest the importance of the oestrogen receptor α (ER-α) and osteocalcin (also known as BGP, for bone Gla protein) in determining FPG; however, whether their polymorphisms are associated with FPG variation is not well understood., Aim: To investigate whether ER-a PvuII and BGP HindIII genetic polymorphisms and their potential interaction are associated with FPG variation., Subjects and Methods: The study subjects were 328 unrelated pre-menopausal Chinese women aged 21 years and over (mean age ± SD, 33.2 ± 5.9 years), with an average FPG of 4.92 (SD = 0.81). All subjects were genotyped at the ER-α PvuII and BGP HindIII loci using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP)., Results: The ER-α PvuII genotypes were significantly associated with FPG (p = 0.007). In addition, a significant interaction was observed of the ER-α PvuII polymorphism with BGP HindIII polymorphism on FPG variation (p = 0.013), although the BGP HindIII polymorphism was not shown to be individually associated with FPG., Conclusion: The PvuII polymorphism of the ER-α gene and its potential interaction with the HindIII polymorphism of the BGP gene were associated with FPG in pre-menopausal Chinese women.

Background: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common tumors with high mortality in China. Microsatellite instability (MSI) analysis is important for the diagnosis of hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) and for the prediction of 5-FU chemotherapy efficiency of colorectal tumors, especially in terms of therapeutic response and overall survival rates. Among the MSI markers recommended by the NIH/NCI, BAT-25 has been extensively studied for its major role in MSI. BAT-25 presents different polymorphisms in different ethnic populations and studies of its polymorphisms in the Chinese population are still very limited., Aims: To analyze the frequency of constitutive polymorphic variation at the BAT-25 locus in Chinese from Jiangsu Province and its implication for locus MSI screening., Methods: The frequency of allelic variation at the BAT-25 locus of cervical cells from 500 healthy women and blood from 16 healthy males was assessed by direct sequencing. Twenty samples were also analyzed by fragment analysis. DNA extracted from blood of 94 patients with gastrointestinal cancer or endometrial cancer was analyzed by fragment analysis., Results: After comparison with the sequencing results, the more frequent allele lengths were 126-127 bp, 128-129 bp, 129-130 bp, respectively consistent with the 24 poly(T) (T24), T25 and T26 alleles. At the BAT-25 locus, 516 healthy individuals had respectively 1.36%, 97.28% and 1.36% of the T24, T25 and T26. Whereas for the 94 cancer patients allelic frequencies were 0.53%, 1.06%, 96.8%, 1.6% for T15, T24, T25 and T26 alleles respectively. Sixteen healthy males had only the T25 allele and heterozygous T15 was only found in 1 male patient with colon cancer., Conclusion: We established the relation between fragment length and thymine repeats in BAT-25. The results showed that the BAT-25 locus is quasimonomorphic in Chinese from Jiangsu province. Moreover we showed that variant alleles of BAT-25 were found more likely in blood from cancer patients than in healthy individuals, suggesting the need to perform comparative studies between tumor and blood, or normal tissue, as to obtain a correct MSI identification.

The purpose of this study was to observe heart rate and respiration responses to real traffic pattern flight. Nine experienced and nine less-experienced military pilots on active flying status participated in four uninterrupted traffic patterns flight missions with F-7 jet trainer. The heart rates and respiration waves were continuously recorded using a small recording device strapped around the chest. As compared with baseline values, significant increases in heart rates of the two groups (for experienced pilots group, F (11, 88) = 4.636, p = 0.000; for less-experienced, F (11, 88) = 4.437, p = 0.000) and mean respiration rates of less-experienced group (F (11, 88) = 4.488, p = 0.000) were obtained during the phases of take-off, final approach and landing. Heart rates of less-experienced pilots were significant higher than those of experienced pilots during the take-off phase (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in respiration rates between the two groups at each phase of the whole flight. The results show that take-off, final approach and landing are the most mental workload phases in-flight, and less-experienced pilots show more mental workload than experienced pilots in take-off phase in-flight.

Objective: To compare the cognitive effects of guqin (the oldest Chinese instrument) music and piano music., Methods: Behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) data in a standard two-stimulus auditory oddball task were recorded and analyzed., Results: This study replicated the previous results of culture-familiar music effect on Chinese subjects: the greater P300 amplitude in frontal areas in a culture-familiar music environment. At the same time, the difference between guqin music and piano music was observed in N1 and later positive complex (LPC: including P300 and P500): a relatively higher participation of right anterior-temporal areas in Chinese subjects., Conclusion: The results suggest that the special features of ERP responses to guqin music are the outcome of Chinese tonal language environments given the similarity between Guqinos tones and Mandarin lexical tones.

Objective: To study the mutation patterns of epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) exon 18, 19 and 21 in Chinese non-small-cell lung cancers (NSCLC)., Methods: Somatic mutation in samples of 32 cases without Iressa-treatment were compared with that in 10 volunteers blood control. The mutations were identified for the forward and reverse sequence chains for the tyrosine kinase domain of the EGFR gene, followed by DNA template abstraction and Touchdown PCR., Results: Nine types of mutation were found in sequences of 7 cases among the 32 non-small cell lung carcinoma tissues, namely, five reported mutation within exon 19, and two new heterozygous mutations, L833V and H835L within exon 21, and two intron polymorphism. These results showed a mutation rate of 9/32 (28.1%) in Chinese with NSCLC, and of 31.6% in lung adenocarcinomas., Conclusion: EGFR mutation rate in Chinese with NSCLC is consistent with those of Asian women reported in the literature but new mutation points in Chinese were presented as L833V and H835L. The mutation rate is in concordance with release rate of NSCLC obtained by Gefitinib treatment in Chinese.
