A new species of mantis, Arria qinlingensissp. n., is described based on both male and female specimens collected from Qinling Mt., China. This new species has similar external morphology to A. leigongshanensis (Ge and Chen, 2008); these two species represent a mysterious evolutionary clade in the genus Arria Stål, 1877. The discovery of this moss-mimicking mantis species represents the northernmost distribution of the genus Arria. Illustrations and ecological images of Arria species in China are presented, and the images of the final-instar nymph for both sexes of A. leigongshanensis (Ge and Chen, 2008) and the ootheca of Arria qinlingensissp. n. are illustrated. Prayer animal release (PAR)—a traditional "compassion‐based" religious practice of releasing captive animals into the wild to improve the karma of the releaser—has been regarded as a major anthropogenic pathway facilitating species invasions worldwide. However, comprehensive, quantitative assessments of PAR‐related invasion risks, crucial for the development of mitigation strategies, are lacking. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a literature review of the prevalence of PAR events and examined the overlap between PAR intensity across China and habitat suitability for non‐native vertebrates released in these events. Our results revealed that 63% of the areas with high PAR intensity in China were also suitable for non‐native vertebrate establishment, a degree of overlap that was greater than expected by chance. In addition, field surveys in China detected higher richness of non‐native fishes at PAR sites than at non‐PAR sites. These findings imply an overall high risk of biological invasions associated with PARs. We recommend interdisciplinary cooperation among scientists, religious groups, and government agencies to effectively manage PARs and reduce the associated bioinvasion risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Strawberry is a widely cultivated cash crop in China. In order to control pests and diseases on strawberries, there must be sufficient deposits on the abaxial surfaces of the leaves. Air-assisted technology can effectively increase the deposition on the abaxial surfaces of the leaves; however, most air-assisted equipment is not suitable for application due to the pattern of strawberry planting. Therefore, a novel air-assisted strawberry sprayer was developed, the static and dynamic wind fields were measured using a 3D anemometer, and the effectiveness of the application at different spray angles and wind speeds was evaluated. In addition, a comparison of the deposition effect in the strawberry canopy between the air-assisted strawberry sprayer, knapsack sprayer, and spray gun was conducted. The results showed that in the static wind field test, a difference between the center and edge wind fields was obtained, which was correlated with the distance and the outlet wind speed. In the dynamic wind field test, the wind field was found to be rolling backward during the movement, and an inward vortex was obtained. In the field, the data showed that a spray angle of 30° and a wind speed of 16 m·s−1 had the best deposition on the abaxial surface, with a coverage of 36.5% and 38.3% in the upper canopy and 6.2% and 7.9% in the lower canopy, respectively. Moreover, the air-assisted strawberry sprayer was found to have a higher deposition efficiency on abaxial surfaces than the knapsack sprayer and spray gun at a lower spray volume, the values of which in the upper and lower canopies were 42.8% and 29.7%, respectively. In conclusion, the air-assisted strawberry sprayer has the potential for the crop protection of greenhouse strawberries, and more evaluations are needed to improve the sprayer in the future. Air-assisted sprayers are the mainstream orchard plant protection machinery in China. During the usage of sprayers, the pesticide droplets carried by strong air jets from sprayers enter into the target canopy. Therefore, the distribution of airflow field in the canopy has significant influence on the spatial movement of the droplets and the adhesion and penetration of the droplets inside the canopy. To enhance the working performance of sprayers, it is imperative to study their use in tree canopies. Based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the k-ε turbulence model, and the SIMPLE algorithm, a 3D simulated model of the spatial distribution of the airflow field in and around the tree canopy was established based on the porous model in this paper. The model was used to simulate and calculate the air field distribution of an air-assisted orchard sprayer under different operating parameters. The results showed that the optimal operation effect was achieved when the driving speed and the air speed of the fan outlet were 1 m/s and 20 m/s, respectively, while the air speed in the canopy was not less than 2 m/s. The 36 points measured in the canopy were compared with the simulated results through field experiments. It showed that average relative error between the measured and simulated values was 13.85%, and the overall goodness-of-fit was 0.97656. The model accurately simulated the airflow distribution in the canopy and provided a basis for optimizing the operating parameters of the air-assisted sprayers in orchards. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Orchard plant protection machinery in China still has a low application efficiency. Air-blast sprayers represent the primary development direction of pesticide applications in orchards. The spray control parameters have to be matched to the tree canopy status to achieve precise results. In this study, a vertical patternator was used to determine the accuracy of spraying fruit trees. The influences of three control parameters (blower speed, spray angle, and spray distance) on the spray performance of the air-blast sprayer were analyzed, and the volume of the spray was measured in collection plates at different heights. The quantitative relationship between the overall collection volume and the critical height collection volume was obtained for different parameter values, and the combined effects of any two control parameters on the collection performance and the position of the optimum collection area were obtained. The regression model describing the relationship between the collection volume in the critical height range and the three factors was established, and the main effects of the control parameters were determined. The results showed that if one parameter remained constant, the correlation between the other two parameters was non-significant. The collection volume in the critical height range increased initially and then decreased as the spray distance increased. The maximum collection volume was obtained at a spray distance of 1.762 m. With the increase in orchard areas and the transfer of rural labor, various air-assisted sprayers have been widely used in China. However, the problem of off-target drift still exists, which has caused pesticide waste and environmental pollution. In order to improve the droplet deposition in the canopy of fruit trees, a V-shaped anti-drift spray device with multi-airflow synergy was designed in this paper. A droplet spatial motion model was constructed, and the anti-drift mechanism of multi-airflow synergy was clarified based on particle dynamics analysis. The influences of spray pressure and V-shaped wind speed on droplet movement were investigated by Matlab, and the experimental results showed that the machine's anti-drift effect was better when the V-shaped wind speed ranged from 15 m/s to 25 m/s. According to modern orchards with low root stock in a high-density planting, a simulation model of the flow field between the spray device and the fruit trees canopy was established by the method of computational fluid mechanics (CFD). By considering crosswind speed, V-shaped wind speed, and spray pressure, three-level simulation experiments of droplet deposition were designed for each factor using a partial multivariate orthogonal regression method. The influence of V-shaped wind speed on the droplets' spatial distribution was analyzed, and the prediction model of the drift distance of the droplets' deposition center was established. The simulation results showed that the three factors had a significant influence on the droplets' deposition characteristics, and the degree from big to small was V-shaped wind speed, crosswind speed, and spray pressure. The fitting degree of the prediction model was high, and the correlation coefficient was 0.998. The anti-drift experiments of the machine were carried out, and the results showed that when the crosswind speed, the spray pressure, and V-shaped wind speed were 2.2 m/s, 0.52 MPa, and 20.8 m/s, respectively, the droplet drift rate was 29.2% lower than that of single-airflow. The drift distance of the droplets deposition center was 5.0 cm, which was consistent with the prediction model. Background: Nanguo pear is a distinctive pear variety in northeast China, grown mainly in mountainous areas. Due to terrain limitations, ground-based pesticide application equipment is difficult to use. This limitation could be overcome by using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for pesticide application in Nanguo pear orchards. This study evaluated the spraying performance of two UAVs in the Nanguo pear orchards and compared them with a manually used backpack electric sprayer (BES). The study also analyzed the effect of canopy size on droplet deposition and ground loss, and evaluated two sampling methods, leaf sampling and telescopic rod sampling., Results: Compared to BESs, droplet deposition is lower for UAVs, but the actual pesticide active ingredient deposition is not necessarily lower given the solution concentration. The droplet deposition varies among different UAVs due to structural differences. Under the same UAV operating parameters, droplet deposition on trees with smaller canopy sizes is typically greater than that on trees with larger canopy sizes, and the ground loss was also more severe. Although telescopic rod sampling is a quick and convenient method, it can only reflect the trend of droplet deposition, and the data error is greater compared with leaf sampling., Conclusion: UAVs can achieve better droplet deposition in mountainous Nanguo pear orchards and does almost no harm to the operators compared with the BES. However, canopy size needs to be considered to adjust the application volume rate. Since the 2010s, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sprayer was applied more and more widely for low-volume aerial pesticides spraying operations in China. However, droplets from the UAV sprayer have a higher drift risk due to more fine droplets sprayed and a higher flight height than ground sprayers. Study on UAV spray drift has been a new hot spot within the field of pesticide application technology. Most of previous studies used direct field methods for spray drift, but the meteorological conditions in field were unstable and uncontrollable, and drift research under an actual operation state in wind tunnel has not been reported. Therefore, 25 treatments of wind tunnel measurements and droplets spectrum tests of 10 models of nozzles were conducted to explore the influence factor on spray drift characteristics of UAV chemicals application in this study. A spray unit with a rotor of UAV was innovatively installed in wind tunnel, and the airstream from the wind tunnel was regarded as the relative moving natural wind to simulate the flight status. The airborne and the sediment spray drift was measured to study the effects of the nozzle type and size (flat fan, hollow cone and air-inclusion nozzles), flight speed, adjuvant (DRS-60, Y-20079, MF and G-611) and meteorological parameters (20°C & 40%, 20°C & 80%, 30°C & 40% and 30°C & 60%). The drift potential (DP) and the drift potential reduction percentage (DPRP) in vertical and horizontal directions were obtained for each test. Both nozzle type and size had an impact on the spray drift potential obviously by affecting the droplet size and the ratio of fine droplets, and the regression linear models between DPRPV/DPRPH and DV50, V75 were established (R²=0.934/0.925). Flight speed also had a significant effect on the spray drift characteristics, and reducing the flight speed could increase the DP effectively. Adding spray adjuvants could affect the DP under experimental meteorological parameters, and the anti-drift performance ranked in the order of DRS-60>MF>Y-20079>G-611. Recommendations were proposed in order to reduce the spray drift for UAV sprayer's operation. These findings can contribute to provide guidelines and technical support for the wind tunnel spray drift tests of UAV and the field operation regulation of unmanned aerial PPP application. Unmanned agricultural aircraft system (UAAS) technology has developed rapidly in China in recent years. Due to their high application efficiency, all-terrain operation, and low-volume spraying, UAASs have been widely used for pest management in field crops, achieving good pest control and reduced pressure on farmers. In this study, the applicability of UAAS for orchard protection was tested in an apple orchard by spraying with a four-rotor UAAS and a conventional airassisted orchard sprayer. The spray characteristics of both sprayers, including canopy deposition, drift in the air, loss to the ground, and external contamination on the sprayer, were measured and compared. The field results showed that the effective spray swath width of the UAAS was 2.23 m, and the maximum droplet density was 132 droplets cm-2 in the center of the flight line. The actual deposition in the tree canopy was lower with the UAAS than with the air-assisted sprayer, but the normalized deposition of the UAAS was equivalent to that of the air-assisted sprayer, and the coefficient of variation for deposition in all parts of the canopy was obviously higher for the UAAS than for the air-assisted sprayer. Due to the airflow produced by the high-speed rotors, the spray drift in the air was much higher with the UAAS than with the air-assisted sprayer, whereas the ground loss of the UAAS was 1/5 that of the air-assisted sprayer. Moreover, the rotor airflow of the UAAS caused a large amount of droplets to attach to the sprayer fuselage, causing the external contamination on the UAAS to be five times that of the air-assisted sprayer. Results showed that the use of a multirotor UAAS for plant protection in an orchard had considerable influence on the spray drift and external contamination of the spray equipment. Based on the results, the following recommendations can be made: (1) plant protection with a UAAS should be attained by spraying at a reasonable height to reduce the drift in the air, and (2) UAAS manufacturers should develop adequate spraying systems as well as appropriate UAAS designs for plant protection. This study examines factors contributing to depression among migrant factory workers in Shanghai. A survey was designed with mental health questions under a framework explaining: (1) social capital, (2) migratory stress, and (3) mental health consequences. With a return rate of 98.3%, 1966 individuals completed the survey. Only 11.1% of the respondents indicated having a religious affiliation. The findings are not surprising about the relationship between trust, economic condition, and depression. However, it is surprising to find that not having a religious affiliation is significantly connected to better mental health. The effect of religious beliefs should be examined as a trust factor to remove the barrier of perceiving religion as an added stressor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Greenhouse crop production in China has in the recent years expanded widely. To minimize compromised pesticide use and adverse environmental impact in these structures, it is essential to optimize the working parameters and settings of sprayers. Experiments using an air assisted greenhouse sprayer and artificial plants with attached fruits were conducted to investigate the effects of volume rate, target location, and airflow rate on spray deposition and distribution uniformity on leaves, fruits and losses to the ground. Three spray volume rates (530, 368 and 220 l ha−1) and three nozzle's outlet volumetric airflow rates (374.4, 289.4 and 234.7 m3 h−1) were evaluated. Ground speeds were set at 0.36 and 0.31 m s−1 for volume rate and airflow rate trials, respectively. Artificial targets (filter-paper collectors) were attached on either sides of leaves, fruits and the ground to collect deposits of a food colourant used as a tracer (Spray solution). Deposition was quantified through UV-VIS spectroscopy at a wavelength of 508 nm. Results indicated that volume rate significantly influenced deposition and distribution uniformity. Reducing the volume rate reduced deposition but improved distribution homogeneity. Quantified absolute deposits on upper leaf surfaces declined by 27.4% (MV) and 43.3% (LV). Normalized deposition displayed under-leaf to upper-leaf deposition ratios of between 16.1% (HV) to 20.0% (LV). Ground deposits were reduced by roughly 37.3% (MV) and 54.7% (LV). Similar to volume rate, airflow rate influenced spray deposition on leaves but followed an opposite trend. Reducing airflow rate improved deposition although the effect attained a threshold at medium airflow rate beyond which further reduction the deposition decreased though the reduction was not statistically significant (P = 0.069). Airflow rate did not significantly affect ground deposits (P = 0.315) it reduced the quantity of spray lost by 7% (MF) and 8.4% (HF). This qualitative inquiry examined the unique experiences of members in religious groups in the US and China to inductively derive a theory of what protects against suicide. Twenty-one non-religious group members (NRGMs), 21 religious group members (RGMs), and four from both types of groups completed interviews which were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results suggest that while both NRGMs and RGMs convene around a shared common goal, the RGMs goal was to live a life of faith together. Both NRGMs and RGMs experienced community, but RGMs' valued vulnerable sharing and prayer as vital to growing their faith. Results are most consistent with the theory that religion protects against suicide because it shapes beliefs which enable a suicidal person to resist suicidal thinking. Objective: Previous studies of American English isms terms have uncovered as many as five broad factors: tradition-oriented religiousness (TR), subjective spirituality (SS), communal rationalism (CR), unmitigated self-interest (USI), and inequality aversion (IA). The present studies took a similar lexical approach to investigate the Chinese-language isms structures in both mainland China and Taiwan.Method and Results: In Study 1, exploratory factor analyses with 915 mainland Chinese subjects uncovered four interpretable factors dimensionalizing 165 mainland Chinese dictionary isms terms. These factors represented contents of a combination of TR and SS, USI, CR, and a culturally unique Communist Party of China (CPC) ideology factor. In Study 2, exploratory factor analyses with 467 Taiwan Chinese subjects revealed four interpretable factors categorizing 291 Taiwan Chinese dictionary isms terms. These factors represented contents of a combination of TR and SS, USI, CR, and a culturally unique dimension expressing aspirations for happiness.Conclusions: The results gave evidence for the existence of the isms factors TR and SS, USI, and CR in Chinese culture. Cultural uniqueness was reflected in the merging of TR and SS into the factor Syncretic Religiousness and the culture-specific factors of CPC ideology in China and Happiness/Peace Promotion in Taiwan. Maize (Zea mays L.) is a major global crop, but lodging leads to yield loss. Ethephon can regulate maize growth, reduce plant height, and improve lodging resistance. The application of small crop protection unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to replace electric knapsack sprayers (EKS) for the mechanization of agriculture in China has been widely developed. However, there are no reports on the application of ethephon to control maize growth by UAV. In the present study, the effects of spraying by UAV (15 L ha−1 and 30 L ha−1) and EKS (450 L ha−1) on the droplet deposition distribution and dynamic degradation process of ethephon (60 g a.i. ha−1) were studied. The control of maize growth by different ethephon dosages was also investigated, i.e., 48, 60, and 90 g a.i. ha−1 for UAV and 60 g a.i. ha−1 for EKS. The droplet deposition rates of 15 L ha−1 and 30 L ha−1 by UAV were 11.2% and 15.2%, significantly higher than those of EKS. Furthermore, the degradation half-life under UAV application was longer than that under EKS. The 20% dosage reduction of ethephon applied by UAV (48 g a.i. ha−1) had the same maize growth control effect as EKS (60 g a.i. ha−1), and the UAV treatment was better than EKS when the dosage was the same (60 g a.i. ha−1). Considering the input cost and yield, we recommend that 48 a.i. g ha−1 ethephon is applied by UAV when the lodging risk is low and 90 a.i. g ha−1 when the lodging risk is high, at a spray volume of 15 L ha−1. The application cost of ethephon can be reduced by 47.91–71.81% compared to EKS under these conditions. • Application of UAV increased droplet deposition rate than EKS on maize leaves. • Degradation half-life of ethephon applied by UAV was longer than by EKS. • Application of ethephon by UAV had stronger maize lodging resistance than by EKS. • Ethephon applied by UAV increased maize yield when lodging occurred seriously. Objective: Studies investigating alcohol consumption related factors have rarely focused on the relationship between acculturation, religion and drinking patterns. The objective of this study is to explore the predictors of drinking patterns and their mutual relationships, especially acculturation, ethnicity and religion.Methods: A cross-sectional household survey using a multistage systematic sampling technique was conducted in Yunnan Province of China. A revised Vancouver Index of Acculturation (VIA) and Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) Chinese version were used to measure acculturation and drinking patterns. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to explore the structures of how predictors affect drinking patterns.Results: A total of 977 subjects aged 12-35 years were surveyed. A higher percentage of binge drinking was found among Lisu people. However, the proportion of drinking until intoxication was highest among Han. Gender and enculturation had both direct (standardized β=-0.193, -0.079) and indirect effects (standardized β=-0.126, 0.033) on risky drinking pattern; perceived risk of alcohol consumption (-0.065), family drinking environment (0.061), and friend drinking environment (0.352) affected risky drinking pattern directly, while education level (0.066), ethnicity (-0.038), acculturation (0.012), religious belief (-0.038), and age group (0.088) had indirect effects.Conclusion: Risky drinking pattern was associated with gender and aboriginal culture enculturation both directly and indirectly, and related to mainstream culture acculturation and religious belief indirectly. BACKGROUND To date, no research has been conducted to establish exposure levels for occupational pesticide operators under typical use scenarios in China. Through surrogate skin techniques (the whole-body method), the authors monitored dermal and inhalation exposure of pesticide applicators in China. In addition, the exposure of pesticide mixers was analysed. RESULTS The total dermal exposure of inexperienced and experienced applicators was respectively 4037 and 536 mg kg−1 of active ingredient ( AI) handled for application to maize that was <80 cm in height. The exposure level was highest on hands; the closer to the hands, the lower arms and the upper legs, the higher the exposure. The unit exposure of mixers differed according to the formulation; exposure to emulsifiable concentrate ( EC) and oil-in-water emulsion ( EW) was greater than exposure to wettable powder ( WP) or wettable dispersible granules ( WG). The unit exposure of mixers via inhalation was significantly greater than that of applicators when chlorpyrifos (48% EC) was used ( P < 0.0001). Background: Bodhi beads are a Buddhist prayer item made from seeds. Bodhi beads have a large and emerging market in China, and demand for the beads has particularly increased in Buddhism regions, especially Tibet. Many people have started to focus on and collect Bodhi beads and to develop a Bodhi bead culture. But no research has examined the source plants of Bodhi beads. Therefore, ethnobotanical surveys were conducted in six provinces of China to investigate and document Bodhi bead plants. Reasons for the development of Bodhi bead culture were also discussed. Methods: Six provinces of China were selected for market surveys. Information was collected using semi-structured interviews, key informant interviews, and participatory observation with traders, tourists, and local residents. Barkhor Street in Lhasa was focused on during market surveys because it is one of the most popular streets in China. Results: Forty-seven species (including 2 varieties) in 19 families and 39 genera represented 52 types of Bodhi beads that were collected. The most popular Bodhi bead plants have a long history and religious significance. Most Bodhi bead plants can be used as medicine or food, and their seeds or fruits are the main elements in these uses. 'Bodhi seeds' have been historically used in other countries for making ornaments, especially seeds of the legume family. Many factors helped form Bodhi bead culture in China, but its foundation was in Indian Buddhist culture. Conclusions: As one of the earliest adornment materials, seeds played an important role for human production and life. Complex sources of Bodhi beads have different cultural and historical significance. People bought and collected Bodhi beads to reflect their love and admiration for the plants. Thus, the documentation of Bodhi bead plants can serve as a basis for future investigation of Bodhi bead culture and modern Buddhist culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pesticide application by unmanned agricultural aerial vehicles (UAVs) has rapidly developed in China and other Asian counties. Currently, tank-mix spray adjuvants are usually added into pesticide solutions to reduce spray drift and facilitate droplet deposition and control efficacy. The currently used tank-mix adjuvants are all derived from conventional ground sprays, and their mechanisms of action in aerial applications are still unclear. In order to clarify the spraying characteristics and control efficacy of those adjuvants in aerial sprays, the performances of various types of tank-mix adjuvants were compared by analyzing droplet spectrum, drift potential index (DIX) in a wind tunnel, field deposition and control efficacy on wheat rust and aphids. The atomization results showed that the addition of adjuvants could change the droplet spectrum of liquid, and the results suggest that droplet size is an effective indicator of spray drift potential. In the field application, the meteorological conditions are complex and uncontrollable, and the effects of adjuvants on droplet deposition and distribution were not significant. Compared with the control solution, there was no significant difference in the deposition amount of each adjuvant solution, and the CVs of deposition were higher than 30%. Adding adjuvants to the spray solution can significantly improve the control efficacy of pesticides on wheat aphids and rust and also prolong the duration of the pesticide. Our results suggest that tank-mix adjuvants should be added when UAVs are used for aerial application. Revivals have been a regular feature of the missionary enterprise. The modern Catholic and Protestant missionary movements themselves emerged from major religious revivals in the Western world. On the nineteenth-century China mission fields, Protestant missionaries from the mainline denominations frequently lamented the fact that their often nominal convert communities were lacking in Christian spirit and called for reinvigoration campaigns. It was, however, in the twentieth century that several large-scale revival movements occurred, starting with the 'Manchurian revival' of 1907-8 and culminating in the great 'Shandong revival' of the 1930s. The years after 1908 saw the rise of Chinese - as well as some foreign - full-time revivalists engaging in evangelistic efforts to reach the native Christian as well as non-Christian populations. The Canadian Presbyterian Jonathan Goforth (1859-1936) and the Shandong evangelist Ding Limei (1871-1936) are the most prominent representatives of the early campaigns of Christian renewal. In the 1920s, in spite of the fundamentalist/modernist controversy and anti-Christian agitation by nationalist and revolutionary forces in China, revivalism actually intensified. The principal focus of this paper will be on the new currents of spiritual regeneration that came with the proliferation of mostly small and sectarian missions of Holiness or Pentecostal provenance. Pentecostal ideas, in particular, contributed to the growth of Chinese independent churches and the wave of revivalism that swept across parts of China in the early 1930s. Such 'gifts of the spirit' as prophecy, divine healing and speaking in tongues, as well as a strong pre-millenarian belief, energised many of the more radical indigenous revivalists at this time. Other well-known Chinese evangelists had been influenced by the Holiness movement or Plymouth Brethren ideas. There is an urgent need for new chemical application techniques and sprayers in Chinese orchard spraying. A new tractor-mounted automatic target detecting electrostatics, and air-assisted orchard sprayer was designed and developed to meet the demand of chemical pest control in orchards. This sprayer light weighted, highly efficient, reduces pesticide use and is friendly to the environment. The techniques of automatic target detecting, electrostatics, and air-assisted spraying were combined in this system. The electrostatically charged droplets are projected toward the target by the assistance of an air stream that increases the droplets penetration within canopy. Experimental results show that the new automatic target detecting orchard sprayer with an infrared sensor can save more than 50% to 75% of pesticides, improve the utilization rate (over 55%), control efficiency, and significantly reduce environmental pollution caused by the pesticide application. Objectives: To determine knowledge and beliefs about traditional physiognomy (judging an individual's character from their facial appearance) concerning teeth among young (17-26) and middle-aged (35-44) Hong Kong adults.Methods: In a cross sectional ethnographical telephone survey, 400 adults were interviewed about 16 traditional physiognomy concerning teeth (in consultation with a Feng Shui specialist).Results: Most completed the interview (93%, 373). Over half the study group (63%, 234) claimed they had heard of aspects of physiognomy concerning teeth, and a quarter (24%, 88) believed in such ideologies. Variations in knowledge and beliefs were apparent among people of different age (P < 0.01), gender (P < 0.05), educational attainment (P < 0.01), economic status (P < 0.01), place of birth (P < 0.01) and religion (P < 0.01). Their knowledge and belief in aspects of physiognomy concerning teeth was also associated with reported use of dental services (P < 0.01).Conclusion: Among young and middle-aged adults in Hong Kong, knowledge and beliefs concerning traditional physiognomy regarding teeth is strong, and socio-demographic variations exist in these perceptions. These findings have implications for all those involved in the delivery of dental care in multicultural societies and in raising cultural awareness about traditional health beliefs. Only less than one percent applied pesticides reach the target pest, the remainder spread out into the environment, effecting on workers, bystanders, consumers and so on. Handlers with manual knapsack sprayer are completely exposed to the pesticide spray plume when they deal with the pesticides. Those kinds of sprayer are widely used in developing countries, more than 75% of farmers using hand-pumped knapsack sprayer in China, yet rarely systematic studies had been focused on the typical applying scenario. The occupational exposure of pesticide is highly correlated with the pesticide spray plume flying time in the air in this scenario. Our study aimed to compare the estimated exposure level of handlers to chlorpyrifos sprayed at three spraying direction using a lever-operated knapsack in small farms in five agro-climatic zones of China. Experiments were performed by 24 farms in each province with three different crop heights (< 80 cm, spraying downward; 80-130 cm, spraying horizontal; and > 130 cm, spraying upward; eight farms for every direction) under typical field conditions. Each farmer covered a uniform area of 667 m 2 . The whole body dosimetry method and a personal air sampler were used to monitor the dermal and inhalation exposure. The estimated dermal exposure of the three spraying direction was 629, 1580, and 2140 mg/kg, respectively. The results showed that the total dermal exposure level increased with the spraying direction from downward to upward.
