In a competitive and demanding world, academic stress is of increasing concern to students. This systemic, adaptive, and psychological process is composed of stressful stimuli, imbalance symptoms, and coping strategies. The SISCO-II Academic Stress Inventory (SISCO-II-AS) is a psychometric instrument validated in Chile. It evaluates stressors, symptoms, and coping, both individually and globally. For its practical interpretation, a scale is required. Therefore, this study aims to descriptively analyze the SISCO-II-AS and to obtain its corresponding scales. Employing a non-experimental quantitative approach, we administered the SISCO-II-AS to 1,049 second and third-year students from three Chilean universities, with a disproportionate gender representation of 75.21% female to 24.79% male participants. Through descriptive and bivariate analysis, we established norms based on percentiles. For the complete instrument and its subscales, significant differences by sex were identified, with magnitudes varying from small to moderate. For the full instrument and its subscales, bar scale norms by percentile and sex are presented. Each subscale (stressors, physical and psychological reactions, social behavioural reactions, total reaction, and coping) has score ranges defined for low, medium, and high levels. These ranges vary according to the sex of the respondent, with notable differences in stressors and physical, psychological, and social behavioural reactions. This study stands out for its broad and heterogeneous sample, which enriches the representativeness of the data. It offers a comprehensive view of academic stress in college students, identifying distinctive factors and highlighting the importance of gender-sensitive approaches. Its findings contribute to understanding and guide future interventions. Introduction: Pertussis, a contagious respiratory disease, is underreported in adults. The study objective was to quantify underestimation of pertussis cases in adults aged ≥ 50 years in five Latin American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru). Methods: A previously published probabilistic model was adapted to adjust the number of pertussis cases reported to national surveillance systems by successive multiplication steps (proportion of pertussis cases seeking healthcare; proportion with a specimen collected; proportion sent for confirmatory testing; proportion positive for pertussis; proportion reported to passive surveillance). The proportions at each step were added in a random effects model to produce a pooled overall proportion, and a final multiplier was calculated as the simple inverse of this proportion. This multiplier was applied to the number of cases reported to surveillance to estimate the number of pertussis cases. Monte Carlo simulation with 10,000 iterations estimated median as well as upper and lower 90% values. Input data were obtained from surveillance systems and published sources. Results: The estimated median underestimation factor for pertussis cases in adults ranged from 104 (90% limits 40, 451) in Chile to 114 (90% limits 39, 419) in Argentina. In all five countries, the largest estimated number of cases was in the group aged 50–59 years. The highest number per 100,000 population was in the group aged ≥ 90 years in most countries. The estimated median underestimation factor for pertussis hospitalizations was 2.3 (90% limits 1.8, 3.3) in Brazil and 2.4 (90% limits 1.8, 3.2) in Chile (data not available for other countries). Conclusion: This analysis indicates that the number of pertussis cases in adults aged ≥ 50 years in five Latin American countries is approximately 100 times higher than the number captured in surveillance data. These results could support decision-making in the diagnosis, management, and prevention of pertussis disease in adults. Introduction. Academic stress (AS) is a prevalent challenge faced by university students, potentially affecting molecular indicators such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and global DNA methylation (G-DNA-M). These indicators could illuminate the physiological ramifications of academic stress. Study Design and Methods. This research followed a quantitative, non-experimental, longitudinal panel design spanning two academic semesters, observing phenomena in their natural context. Students from the Medical Technology program at Universidad de Concepción, Chile were involved, with assessments at the beginning and during heightened academic stress periods. Sample. Of the total participants, 63.0% were females, with an average age of 21.14 years at baseline, and 36.92% were males, averaging 21.36 years. By the study's conclusion, female participants averaged 21.95 years, and males 22.13 years. Results. Significant differences were observed between initial and final assessments for the SISCO-II Inventory of Academic Stress and Beck Depression Inventory-II, notably in stressor scores, and physical, and psychological reactions. Gender differences emerged in the final physical and psychological reactions. No significant changes were detected between the two assessments in plasma BDNF or G-DNA-M values. A refined predictive model showcased that, on average, there was a 3.56% decrease in females' plasma BDNF at the final assessment and a 17.14% decrease in males. In the sample, the G-DNA-M percentage at the final assessment increased by 15.06% from the baseline for females and 18.96% for males. Conclusions. The study underscores the physiological impact of academic stress on university students, evidenced by changes in markers like BDNF and G-DNA-M. These findings offer an in-depth understanding of the intricate mechanisms regulating academic stress responses and highlight the need for interventions tailored to mitigate its physiological and psychological effects. Post-traumatic stress (PTSD) disorder is a mental health condition that can occur after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. The 27-F earthquake that struck Chile in 2010 was one such event that had a significant impact on the mental health of the population. A study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of PTSD and its associated factors among survivors of this earthquake. The study was a longitudinal design, involving a sample of 913 patients aged 18 to 75 years who attended 10 Primary Care Centers in Concepción, Chile. The Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) was used to assess both depressive episodes (DE) and PTSD before and after the earthquake. The study also involved genotyping studies using saliva samples from the participants, specifically focusing on the Val66Met and 5-HTTLPR polymorphisms. Statistical analysis was performed to examine the association between different variables and the presence of PTSD. These variables included demographic factors, family history of psychiatric disorders, DE, childhood maltreatment experiences, and critical traumatic events related to the earthquake. The results showed that the incidence of post-earthquake PTSD was 11.06%. No significant differences were found between the groups of participants who developed post-earthquake PTSD regarding the Val66Met or 5-HTTLPR polymorphisms. However, a significant association was found between the concomitant diagnosis of DE and the development of post-earthquake PTSD. The presence of DE doubled the risk of developing post-earthquake PTSD. The number of traumatic events experienced also had a statistically significant association with an increased risk of developing post-earthquake PTSD. The study's limitations include the potential interference of different DE subtypes, the complexity of quantifying the degree of earthquake exposure experienced by each individual, and events entailing social disruption, such as looting, that can profoundly influence distress. In conclusion, the study found that PTSD following the 27-F earthquake in Chile was associated with a concomitant diagnosis of DE and the number of traumatic events experienced. The study did not find a significant association between PTSD and the Val66Met or 5-HTTLPR polymorphisms. The researchers recommend that mental health professionals should prioritize the detection and treatment of concomitant depressive episodes and exposure to critical traumatic events in survivors of disasters. In this study we examined the combined association of physical activity and sitting time with cardiometabolic risk factors in adults in Chile. This is a cross-sectional study based on 3201 adults aged from 18 to 98 years from the Chilean National Health Survey (2016–2017) who responded to the GPAQ questionnaire. Participants were considered inactive if spent < 600 METs-min/wk−1 in physical activity. High sitting time was defined as ≥ 8 h/day. We classified participants into the following 4 groups: active and low sitting time; active and high sitting time; inactive and low sitting time; inactive and high sitting time. The cardiometabolic risk factors considered were metabolic syndrome, body mass index, waist circumference, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. Multivariable logistic regression models were performed. Overall, 16.1% were classified as inactive and high sitting time. Compared to active participants with low sitting time, both inactive participants with low (OR: 1.51; 95% CI 1.10, 1.92) and high sitting time (1.66; 1.10, 2.22) had higher body mass index. Similar results were found for high waist circumference: inactive participants with low (1.57; 1.14, 2.00) and high sitting time (1.84; 1.25, 2.43). We found no combined association of physical activity and sitting time with metabolic syndrome, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. Using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope values, we analyzed the trophic position (TP) and the isotopic niche width of lanternfishes from three different areas in the Southern Pacific Ocean. Fishes from Perú had slightly higher δ13C values compared with fish from Chilean areas. In contrast, δ15N values increased with latitude (North to South). Myctophids TP differed between the three study areas (highest in Central Chile, lowest in Peru). Peruvian fishes had a smaller isotopic niche than the lanternfishes of those from Chile. The horror of the military coup in Chile motivated a massive international solidarity network. One of them was composed of self-organized citizens, NGOs, and Chilean exiles in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). This movement was a response to affected individuals facing the lack of immediate measures and policies of the FRG's government towards exile and human rights violation victims in Chile. This article offers a cartography that traces key locations of such solidarity network: places where solidarity events took place, where the subjects involved reside, and their transits; with a special but not exclusive focus on the state of Baden-Württemberg, in the federal south. Considering the historical moment when this took place – Cold War scenario: Germany divided between the two ruling blocks – the cartography shows how this movement was a way of subverting that geopolitical order. This work, therefore, is a new contribution to the studies of solidarity and, at the same time, it links those studies with the field of STS, by presenting a cartography as a visual dispositif that documents the imbrications of solidarity, affections, politics, culture, Germans, and Chileans on a given territory. The Mapuche comprise 80% of the indigenous population of Chile. The Araucanía has the highest concentration of Mapuche peoples and is also the poorest region of the country. The region's proximity to a large tourist sector provides opportunities for weavers to work from home and sell their products as a primary or secondary income source. The adverse health effects related to craft production and home-based work are significant and not well described in the literature. Participatory ergonomics (PE), an approach that emphasizes the input and participation of individuals directly impacted by the work being studied, is a strong fit for this population. This article describes a PE project among 33 Mapuche weavers that characterizes the hazards, risks and perceived adverse health effects associated with home-based weaving and the identification, implementation and evaluation of three ergonomic interventions. AtmChile is an R package that permits the download and management of data from the National Air Quality Information System (SINCA, Spanish acronyms) and the Chilean Meteorological Directorate (DMC, Spanish acronyms) for multiple air quality and climatological parameters in a simple and intuitive platform. The AtmChile package includes the ChileAirQualityApp, a dashboard for enhancing the data download functions of this package with analysis, visualization, and descriptive statistics tools in a user-friendly manner. The AtmChile offers researchers and the public a highly intuitive open access package to download, validate, visualize, and preliminarily analyze air quality and climatological data available in Chile. Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the etiological factor for cervical cancer and its precursor lesions. The characterization of HPV genotypes in preneoplastic lesions and cervical cancer could establishes the effectiveness of vaccination plan in Chilean population. The aim of this study was to determine HPV frequency in a group of women including in a cervical screening program in the public health care system in Chile.Methods: We analyzed 985 cervical smears samples from women with different histological diagnosis, attending to public health care in Temuco-Chile between 2004 and 2012, to detect HPV genotypes, through PCR followed by reverse line blotting assay.Results: HPV was found present in 80.8% (n = 796) of samples. Only a 5.6% of 985 samples were infected with a low-risk HPV, considering multiple infections. 10.5% (n = 8/76) of normal cervical epithelia, 83.5% (n = 208/249) and 87.6% (n = 557/636) of low and high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, respectively, and 95.8% (n = 23/24) of squamous cervical carcinomas tested positive for HPV. HPV 16 was the most frequent genotype found (Overall 44.9%, n = 442/985; SCC: 62.5%, n = 15/24). A high variability of HPV types was also found in preneoplastic lesions, whereas there was a selection of genotypes in neoplasia. Also, there was a higher risk of infection with HPV 16 in women ≤26 years and 34-41 years old (p < 0.05), meanwhile infections with HPV 16 or HPV 18 have related with cancer development (p < 0.01).Conclusions: These data provide further information about the frequency of HPV genotypes in women with cervical lesions in Chile, and the introduction of new targeted vaccines against a wider spectrum of HPV is suggested. This article analyzes the main labor market risk management strategies adopted by the Chilean Government during the 1999 recession that was initially related to the Asian financial crisis. Their successes and failures can suggest innovative social protection solutions for other countries. It seems that the 1999–2001 labor reforms and a three-year plan to increase the minimum wage intensified the recession’s effects on unemployment. Probit models indicate that households coped with the recession’s effects by increasing wives’ labor supply but not by withdrawing children from schools. Considering how individuals perceive landscape is important when undertaking land management decisions. However, understanding how the community perceives a landscape is complex involving their experiences in that landscape, their lived experiences and other socio-cultural processes. One of the key challenges to understanding perception is linking the landscape properties to what is experienced when individuals interact with the landscape. Increasingly the use of geospatial data offers a tool for understanding the landscape and perceptions. This study compares satellite estimates of land use with the perceptions of the inhabitants of Yungay, Chile. Viewshed analysis is used to reconcile the differences seen in the satellite image cover estimates and those of the participants. It was found that restricting the cover estimate to the visible landscape, provided similar estimates of cover to those made by the participants. This varied between demographic groups. We explore the external validity of a common pool resource (CPR) laboratory experiment. The experimental subjects were artisanal fishers who exploit benthic resources on the coast of Chile. A first set of subjects was recruited from fishers' unions that comanage their resources through territorial user right areas. These unions differ in their performance, which is largely the outcome of the cooperative efforts of their members. A second set of subjects was recruited among nonunionized fishers who do not participate in the comanagement system. They fish exclusively in open-access areas and barely cooperate in their fishing. Membership of a union and the union's performance in comanagement were related to the subjects' behavior in the laboratory. In the CPR experiment, members of high-performance unions showed high cooperation with each other, while members of low-performance unions cooperated significantly less. Nonunionized fishers did not cooperate at all. We also explored how the weak external enforcement of an individual quota can trigger changes in behavior, what we refer to as internalizing the norm. Only the members of high-performance unions internalized the norm. They refrained from overfishing until the end of the game, even though the sanction for exceeding the quota was not strong enough to be dissuasive from the point of view of pure self-interest. This study provided insight on the experimental analysis of cooperation in artisanal fisheries and suggested that the capacity to internalize norms is important to the sustainable exploitation of artisanal fisheries common pool resources. Eleven species of Huilliche medicinal plants used traditionally against infections and for wound healing were tested for their cholinesterase inhibition activity. Two different teas (a 5-7 min infusion and a 1 h decoction, both in water) were tested for their toxicity against Artemia salina. The results from the present study clearly show that teas boiled for 1 h is much more toxic than teas infused for 5-7 min. These results support the different traditional use of the two teas, where the 1h tea is for external use only. Additionally, significant inhibition of cholinesterase has been observed for MeOH extracts of Acaena argentea, Amomyrtas meli and Pseudopanax laetevirens, with that of A. argentea being the most potent. This article gives an overview of the trajectory, components and repertory of the Chilean students' movement, which staged a series of protests during 2011. Although it started by contesting inequalities in the education system, the movement soon evolved into a challenge to the authoritarian character of political institutions, sharing similar goals with protests elsewhere around the world—including radical economical and political democratization. Should we therefore see the Chile students' protests as an Occupy-type protest? By analyzing the main interpretations over the movement, this article argues that the Occupy label is insufficient to understand the specificity of the conflict. In Chile, protests did not occur through small groups coordinated by loose networks; instead, they were spurred by traditional student organizations. This created a scenario of social unrest that resembles classical forms of contention, and in that respect differs from Occupy Wall Street, the indignados or the Arab Spring. This case shows that despite the crisis of neoliberal governance forming a common historical backdrop, the modularity (how?) and the composition (who?) of the movement are better explained by the historical configuration of national political systems. Background: Myrcianthes coquimbensis is an endangered shrub endemic to Chile. No published account is known about its biology, ecology or threats to its continued existence. Aims: To document the current state of knowledge of M. coquimbensis regarding its geographic distribution, and population and reproductive parameters, and to evaluate threats in its distribution range. Methods: Historical records and recent survey data of 110 localities were used to characterise its known distribution. Plots were established in seven localities to determine the proportion of flowering individuals, recruitment and estimate population size and structure. Finally, levels of post-dispersal seed predation were determined in one locality. Results: The current distribution of M. coquimbensis extends along 82.8 km of the Chilean coast, where the species is mainly threatened by habitat loss. Only 13% of the individuals flowered during 2010, and 66% of these plants lost their entire flower crop due to desiccation. Few seeds (7.5%) were lost to post-dispersal seed predation. The populations are composed mainly of adult plants (70% of the individuals), and little to no recruitment was observed. Conclusions: M. coquimbensis populations are threatened by habitat loss and are not naturally recruiting through sexual reproduction. The essential oil and the MeOH extract of the leaves from Baccharis magellanica and B. elaeoides were found to he active against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. Analysis of the leaf essential oil yielded 0.3% v/w and 0.7% v/w, respectively. Analysis by GC-FID and GC/MS established the major constituents of both species. In B. elacoides the major constituents were γ-cadinene (9.9%), limonene (9.1%), τ-cadinol (8.4%), α-cadinol (8.1%), β-pinene (5.0%), β-patchoulene (4.9%), α-muurolene (4.0%), α-pinene (3.6%), α-calacorene (2.7%), γ-muurolene (2.7%), α-thujene (2.5%), α-cubebene (2.4%) and terpinen-4-ol (2.2%), and in B. magellanica the major constituents were 4-hydroxy- acetophenone (30.5%), massoia lactone (9.2%), α-cadinol (6.5%), γ-eudesmol (4.9%), elemol (3.7%), β-eudesmoI (2.5%) and caryophyllene oxide (2.3%). This study examines whether religious beliefs motivate nonviolent behavior and lower rates of recidivism among Chilean inmates. We collected data through in-depth interviews with 174 inmates using open and close-ended questions. The research used a proportional random sample to select participants, principal component analysis to identify similarities and differences between groups, and content analysis to examine answers to the open-ended interview questions. Its findings indicate that evangelical inmates in Chilean prisons are less violent, more likely to follow internal jail regulations, and more cooperative with professionals and officials. This study contributes to the literature because there was no previous evidence in Chile that religious association, religious conviction, or a desire to change criminal behavior is instrumental to achieving better security during inmates' stays in prison. The results also demonstrate that the presence of a peer group, with its emotional support and provision of a daily routine, is fundamental if inmates are to successfully handle their anxiety and be less violent. Five new cultivars of common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) recently released were analyzed for their proximate chemical composition and protein biological quality. The crude protein content in these cultivars ranged from 21.9 percent in cultivar Arroz 3 to 26.9 percent in cultivar Tórtola Diana (dry matter basis). Rats fed cultivar Tórtola INIA gained more weight, had a higher protein intake and registered higher PER and NPR than Tórtola corriente. On the other hand, rats consuming cultivars Arroz 3 and Fleetwood had lower weight gain, lower protein intake and lower PER and NPR than cultivar Coscorrón corriente. The Magellan Strait is a narrow passage connecting the Pacific and Atlantic oceans in South America. An average of 2023 ships per year transit this corridor with 80% representing the international fleet. The southwestern part of the Strait in Chile is an important summer feeding area for humpback whales. Considering the risk to whales of feeding among dense ship traffic, the movements of 25 satellite-tagged whales relative to vessel density were analyzed, to provide policy recommendations for protecting the species from vessel collisions. A total of 3694 filtered whale positions from 21 individuals were obtained along the southwest passage. The daily range covered by individual whales was 8.8 km, and <25 km on 90% of all days. Ship density in the same square kilometers where whales were encountered was 0.27 per week, slightly more often than once per month, however this encounter rate varied by 100-fold between individuals, depending on how often animals were in the central shipping lane. One of the tagged whales stopped transmitting and washed up dead suggesting a ship strike. In the last decade, four other humpback whales and three sei whales were killed by probable ship strikes, all near Isla Carlos III, the core of the humpback feeding area. A 10-knot speed restriction and onboard observers are recommended during the five months of maximum whale abundance, applying to all merchant vessels traveling through the Strait, between Cabo Holland and Isla Bonete north of Carlos III Island, for a distance of 28 nautical miles (52 km). • The Magellan Strait is a heavily used shipping channel and vital feeding area for humpback whales. • Annually, over 2000 commercial vessels transit the area visited by roughly 100 migratory whales. • 25 satellite-tagged whales tracked relative to vessel density showed risks for vessel collisions. • A seasonal 10-knots speed limit is recommended for vessels transiting the core of the feeding area. The sixth region of Chile hosts the giant El Teniente porphyry copper deposit and several polymetallic districts exploited in small mine works; the latter are situated and processed in a predominantly agricultural area. This mining activity has a potential for environmental damage caused by infiltration of mineral processing slurries. As possible low-cost material for environmental applications, a local common clay and pumice were tested in 1:1 mixtures for the retention of Cu, As, Mo and Fe in mine waste waters and mineral processing slurries (pH range 3–6). In batch filtrations, simulating a single spillage of slurry, copper levels were reduced from >1100 to <0.05 ppm, Mo from 0.7 to <0.3 ppm, Fe from 400 to <0.1 ppm and As from 174 to <5×10−4 ppm. The filtered solutions increased K levels due to cation exchange in smectite; leaching of Cl and SO4 from pumice was observed. Retention of oil and grease by pure pumice was excellent (reduction of 13600 to <10 mg/l). The volume of slurry filtered should not exceed the volume of the filtration medium; a rapid saturation of Cu and SO4 was observed in the filtration medium. The basic filtration tests indicate this filtration mixture may be a cheap option for short- to medium-term retention of slurry spillage in small mines and mineral processing plants during maintenance works. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has strained health system capacity worldwide due to a surge of hospital admissions, while mitigation measures have simultaneously reduced patients' access to health care, affecting the diagnosis and treatment of other diseases such as cancer. We estimated the impact of delayed diagnosis on cancer outcomes in Chile using a novel modelling approach to inform policies and planning to mitigate the forthcoming cancer-related health impacts of the pandemic in Chile.Methods: We developed a microsimulation model of five cancers in Chile (breast, cervix, colorectal, prostate, and stomach) for which reliable data were available, which simulates cancer incidence and progression in a nationally representative virtual population, as well as stage-specific cancer detection and survival probabilities. We calibrated the model to empirical data on monthly detected cases, as well as stage at diagnosis and 5-year net survival. We accounted for the impact of COVID-19 on excess mortality and cancer detection by month during the pandemic, and projected diagnosed cancer cases and outcomes of stage at diagnosis and survival up to 2030. For comparison, we simulated a no COVID-19 scenario in which the impacts of COVID-19 on excess mortality and cancer detection were removed.Findings: Our modelling showed a sharp decrease in the number of diagnosed cancer cases during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a large projected short-term increase in future diagnosed cases. Due to the projected backlog in diagnosis, we estimated that in 2021 there will be an extra 3198 cases (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 1356-5017) diagnosed among the five modelled cancers, an increase of nearly 14% compared with the no COVID-19 scenario, falling to a projected 10% increase in 2022 with 2674 extra cases (1318-4032) diagnosed. As a result of delayed diagnosis, we found a worse stage distribution for detected cancers in 2020-22, which is estimated to lead to 3542 excess cancer deaths (95% UI 2236-4816) in 2022-30, compared with the no COVID-19 scenario, among the five modelled cancers, most of which (3299 deaths, 2151-4431) are projected to occur before 2025.Interpretation: In addition to a large projected surge in diagnosed cancer cases, we found that delays in diagnosis will result in worse cancer stage at presentation, leading to worse survival outcomes. These findings can help to inform surge capacity planning and highlight the importance of ensuring appropriate health system capacity levels to detect and care for the increased cancer cases in the coming years, while maintaining the timeliness and quality of cancer care. Abstract: Background: Concern about quinacrine lingers because of its carcinogenic effects in rats. We describe results of long-term follow-up of women who underwent quinacrine pellet sterilization in Chile between 1977 and 1989 (N=1492). Methods: We interviewed the women or relatives in five rounds of data collection between 1991–1993 and 2006–2007, and reviewed hospital records. Median follow-up was 18.5 years; total person-time was 23,894 woman-years. This analysis focuses on pelvic and abdominal surgeries and conditions. We used survival analysis to estimate the 15-year cumulative probability of hysterectomy, other pelvic surgical procedures and relevant adverse events. Results: Uterine fibroids were by far the most common gynecologic condition, reported by 11% of the cohort. Surgical procedures were recorded for 15% of the cohort; hysterectomy was the most frequent procedure (10%), followed by salpingectomy (2%). The 15-year probability of any pelvic or abdominal procedure was 14.7 per 100 women (95% confidence interval 12.4–16.9). The probability of hysterectomy was 9.3 per 100 women (95% confidence interval 7.4–11.1). Number of quinacrine insertions had little impact on the probabilities. Conclusion: During long-term follow-up of women who received quinacrine pellets for nonsurgical sterilization, the incidence of noncancer adverse outcomes was not unusually high, and no alarming patterns emerged. Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: The traditional use of 40 plant species used for treatment of wounds and associated infections by the Huilliche people of Chile was evaluated against bacterial and fungal human pathogens, especially including wound pathogens. Materials and methods: The extracts were tested against the fungi Penicillium expansum, Candida albicans and the bacteria Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (four different strains), Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli (four different strains), Streptococcus pneumoniae (four different strains with one being resistance to streptomycin). Results: Thirteen of the plant species have interesting antimicrobial activities, with that of Acaena argentea, Aristotelia chilensis, Blechnum chilense, Francoa appendiculta, Gevuina avellana and Laureliopsis philippiana being the most noteworthy. Conclusions: The findings in the manuscript support the traditional use by the Huilliche people, and allow enhanced economical benefit and use by the locals. The results obtained on Acaena argentea, Aristotelia chilensis, Blechnum chilense, Francoa appendiculta, Gevuina avellana and Laureliopsis philippiana are of specific scientific interest, and further studies is needed in order to establish the active constituents of the species. In the last decades the use of wood as a construction material has been steadily increasing. Among the main reasons behind this, are its renewable resource nature and its low environmental footprint. In this context, one of the main challenges faced by engineers during the design process is the knowledge and characterization of wood's thermo-mechanical properties. This is related to the large morphological variations present at the microstructural level, that lead to a wide scatter of the macroscopic properties. To circumvent this issue, in this work a multiscale modelling strategy based on asymptotic homogenisation is proposed. The model is based on the hierarchical nature of wood and incorporates the three material scales generally identified in soft woods: (i) the microfibril scale, (ii) the wood cell scale, and (iii) the growth ring scale. The effective thermo-mechanical macroscopic properties are obtained by sequentially applying the homogenisation procedure from the microfibril scale all the way up to the macroscopic scale. The model is employed here to investigate the thermo-mechanical response of radiata pine grown in Chile. To determine values of the microstructural parameters that yield macroscopic properties consistent with those observed experimentally, a parameter identification strategy is proposed. The latter considers four elements: an existing experimental database on timber boards density and bending tests, the multiscale model, a timber board bending test finite element model and a genetic algorithm for the optimization procedure. With the resulting microstructural parameters the model is then used to estimate the effective elastic, thermal, and thermo-mechanical properties of radiata pine wood. When compared with measured experimental data and typical experimental values found in the literature, the numerical estimates demonstrate the model predicting capabilities. • Presents a multiscale modelling strategy for the thermo-mechanical response of wood. • The model includes cellulose microfibrils, wood cells and annual growth rings. • Microstructural parameters were calibrated with experimental data from radiata pine. • Predicted macroscopic properties are consistent with those observed experimentally. • Model shows good predictive potential related to wood thermo-mechanical properties.
