This study tested 2 related hypotheses. The first holds that high co-rumination anticipates heightened internalizing problems. The second holds that positive relationships with friends exacerbate the risk for internalizing problems arising from co-rumination. A sample of MZ twins followed from birth (194 girls and 170 boys) completed (a) self-reports of friendship support, friendship negativity, and co-rumination with friends at age 12 and (b) measures of anxiety and depression at ages 12 and 13. Using a monozygotic twins-difference design, within-pair differences in co-rumination predicted increased within-pair differences in anxiety (but not depression), after removing the covariance between co-rumination and perceptions of friendship. In other words, the difference in co-rumination within each monozygotic twin pair predicted an increase in the difference in their anxiety levels, but not the difference in their depression levels. The discussion focuses on nonshared environmental influences, because the monozygotic twin-difference design eliminates the possibility that associations were driven by heritability or by shared environmental factors that underlie friendship experiences and internalizing problems.

Evaluated master's level course in gender and cultural issues in counseling. Graduate students (n=57) assigned to experimental or comparison groups completed measures of cultural awareness and gender attitudes before and after experimental group participated in the course. Background: Retransitions in youth are critical to understand, as they are an experience about which little is known and about which families and clinicians worry. Aims: This study aims to qualitatively describe the experiences of youth who made binary social transitions (came to live as the binary gender different from the one assigned at birth) in childhood by the age of 12, and who later socially transitioned genders again (here, called "retransitioning"). Methods: Out of 317 participants in an ongoing longitudinal study of (initially) binary transgender youth, 23 participants had retransitioned at least once and were therefore eligible for this study. Of those youth, 8 were cisgender at the time of data collection, 11 were nonbinary, and 4 were binary transgender youth (after having retransitioned to nonbinary identities for a period). Fifteen youth and/or their parent(s) participated in semi-structured interviews (MYouthAge = 11.3 years; 9 non-Hispanic White; 3 Hispanic White; 3 Multiracial; 10 assigned male; 5 assigned female). Interviews gauged antecedents of transitions, others' reactions to transitions, and participants' general reflections. Responses were coded and thematically analyzed. Results: Participants described various paths to retransitions, including that some youth identified differently over time, and that some youth learned about a new identity (e.g., nonbinary) that fit them better. Social environments' responses to retransitions varied but were often neutral or positive. No participants spontaneously expressed regret over initial transitions. Conclusions: These findings largely do not support common concerns about retransitions. The optical and chemical properties of biomass burning (BB) smoke particles greatly affect the impact that wildfires have on climate and air quality. Previous work has demonstrated some links between smoke properties and factors such as fuel type and meteorology. However, the factors controlling BB particle speciation at emission are not adequately understood nor are the factors driving particle aging during atmospheric transport. As such, modeling wildfire smoke impacts on climate and air quality remains challenging. The potential to provide robust, statistical characterizations of BB particles based on ecosystem type and ambient environmental conditions with remote sensing data is investigated here. Space-based Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) observations, combined with the MISR Research Aerosol (RA) algorithm and the MISR Interactive Explorer (MINX) tool, are used to retrieve smoke plume aerosol optical depth (AOD) and to provide constraints on plume vertical extent; smoke age; and particle size, shape, light-absorption properties, and absorption spectral dependence. These tools are applied to numerous wildfire plumes in Canada and Alaska, across a range of conditions, to create a regional inventory of BB particle-type temporal and spatial distribution. We then statistically compare these results with satellite measurements of fire radiative power (FRP) and land cover characteristics, as well as short-term climate, meteorological, and drought information from the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA-2) reanalysis and the North American Drought Monitor. We find statistically significant differences in the retrieved smoke properties based on land cover type, with fires in forests producing the thickest plumes containing the largest, brightest particles and fires in savannas and grasslands exhibiting the opposite. Additionally, the inferred dominant aging mechanisms and the timescales over which they occur vary systematically between land types. This work demonstrates the potential of remote sensing to constrain BB particle properties and the mechanisms governing their evolution over entire ecosystems. Violence against sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals has continued to proliferate globally. Yet, less is known about victimization among subgroups of SGM individuals, especially SGM immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. There has been a steady increase in this vulnerable group of migrants over the years, and emerging evidence has pointed to their heightened risk of victimization. We conducted a scoping review of the peer-reviewed literature that examined violence, abuse, and mental health among SGM individuals who migrate internationally. One hundred ninety-nine articles were identified by searching five scholarly databases and hand searching. Twenty-six articles met inclusion criteria. We first used the migration framework, which outlines the distinct phases of the migration trajectory (predeparture, travel, interception, destination, and return), to categorize findings and then identified four overarching themes to capture SGM migrants' experiences at each phase: severe and prolonged violence and abuse related to sexual orientation or gender identity (predeparture) ; continued victimization and high-risk for sexual violence (travel) ; detainment- and deportation-related violence and abuse (interception and return) ; and new manifestations of violence and abuse while living with past trauma (destination). Violence and abuse began in childhood and continued in the host country, where they faced discrimination while managing posttraumatic stress disorder and depression. Findings indicate that SGM migrants are extremely vulnerable to victimization. There is an immediate need for policies to protect SGM individuals worldwide and for affirmative, culturally informed practices to help SGM migrants manage trauma and the structural barriers impeding recovery. HIV-infected individuals "aware" of their infection are more likely to use condoms, compared to HIV-infected "unaware" persons. To quantify this likelihood, we undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis of U.S. and Canadian studies. Twenty-one eligible studies included men who have sex with men (MSM; k = 15), persons who inject drugs (PWID; k = 2), and mixed populations of high-risk heterosexuals (HRH; k = 4). Risk ratios (RR) of "not always using condoms" with partners of any serostatus were lower among aware MSM (RR 0.44 [not significant]), PWID (RR 0.70) and HRH (RR 0.27); and, in aware MSM, with partners of HIV-uninfected or unknown status (RR 0.46). Aware individuals had lower "condomless sex likelihood" with HIV-uninfected or unknown status partners (MSM: RR 0.58; male PWID: RR 0.44; female PWID: RR 0.65; HRH: RR 0.35) and with partners of any serostatus (MSM only, RR 0.72). Explored differences in sex-role socialization, personality orientation, and work attitudes and values of two groups of women clerical workers (N=91) who made their initial career choices in different historical time frames (the 1950s and 1970s). Results suggest that women clerical workers with differing sex-role socialization experiences may have similar work-related attitudes and values. (ABL)

Investigated socioeconomic status (SES) background and gender of 334 Grade 12 adolescents in relation to prestige level and gender composition of occupations. Results indicated significant relationship between SES background and occupational prestige level for males and females, with high SES females more likely than low SES females to choose male-dominated occupations. The impact of an interdisciplinary course in the effects of sex role stereotyping on awareness and attitudes of participants was assessed. High school students in the experimental program increased their awareness of the stereotyping process and the effects of narrowly defined sex roles. (AOS)

Progress in analyzing and interpreting the concepts of sexual orientation and gender identity in the context of refugee law has contributed to a rise in individuals seeking asylum in such countries as the United States and Canada. However, few studies have examined the victimization experiences of sexual- and gender-identity forced migrants prior to their arrival in North America. This qualitative study used thematic analysis to explore the premigration adult victimization experiences of 26 lesbian, gay, and transgender individuals who obtained refugee, asylee, or withholding-of-removal status in the United States or Canada based on persecution for their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Participants originated from countries in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. Analysis revealed the following themes:living on the edge, adopting concealment strategies, routine victimization, andprotectors as perpetrators. Participants described living in a constant state of hypervigilance, and they adopted numerous strategies to protect themselves from victimization. Despite the use of such strategies, participants experienced victimization by community members and state actors, leaving them no choice but to flee to ensure their safety and well-being. Findings are discussed using the ecological framework outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO). The discussion concludes with implications for international policy and clinical practice. Background: We aimed to determine the frequency and predictors of exercise limitation after pulmonary embolism (PE) and to assess its association with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and dyspnea.Methods: One hundred patients with acute PE were recruited at five Canadian hospitals from 2010 to 2013. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) was performed at 1 and 12 months. Quality of life (QoL), dyspnea, 6-min walk distance (6MWD), residual clot burden (perfusion scan, CT pulmonary angiography), cardiac function (echocardiography), and pulmonary function tests (PFTs) were measured during follow-up. The prespecified primary outcome was percent predicted peak oxygen uptake (Vo2 peak) < 80% at 1-year CPET.Results: At 1 year, 40 of 86 patients (46.5%) had percent predicted Vo2 peak < 80% on CPET, which was associated with significantly worse generic health-related QoL (HRQoL), PE-specific HRQoL and dyspnea scores, and significantly reduced 6MWD at 1 year. Predictors of the primary outcome included male sex (relative risk [RR], 3.2; 95% CI, 1.3-8.1), age (RR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.96-0.99 per 1-year age increase), BMI (RR 1.1; 95% CI, 1.01-1.2 per 1 kg/m2 BMI increase), and smoking history (RR, 1.8; 95% CI, 1.1-2.9), as well as percent predicted Vo2 peak < 80% on CPET at 1 month (RR, 3.8; 95% CI,1.9-7.2), and 6MWD at 1 month (RR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.7-0.9 per 30-m increased walking distance). Baseline or residual clot burden was not associated with the primary outcome. Mean PFT and echocardiographic results (pulmonary artery pressure, right and left ventricular systolic function) at 1 year were similarly within normal limits in both patients with exercise limitations and those without such limitations.Conclusions: Almost half of patients with PE have exercise limitation at 1 year that adversely influences HRQoL, dyspnea, and walking distance. CPET or 6MWD testing at 1 month may help to identify patients with a higher risk of exercise limitation at 1 year after PE. Abstract: Purpose: Clinical protocols to standardize care may improve patient outcomes but worsen trainee education. Our objective was to determine the availability of clinical protocols in teaching medical intensive care units (ICUs). Materials and Methods: We administered an electronic questionnaire regarding protocol availability in 5 specific clinical areas. All directors of adult medical ICUs in US teaching hospitals were eligible to participate. Results: The response rate was 70%. Eighty-six percent of ICU directors reported availability of protocols for ventilation liberation, 73% for sedation, 62% for sepsis resuscitation, 60% for lung-protective ventilation, and 48% for life support withdrawal. Ventilation liberation protocols are most often started and driven by respiratory therapists (40% and 90%); sedation started by residents (41%) and driven by nurses (95%); sepsis resuscitation started and driven by residents (49% and 46%); lung-protective ventilation started by attending physicians (39%) and driven by respiratory therapists (67%); and life support withdrawal started by attending physicians (93%) and driven by nurses (47%). Conclusions: There is wide variation in clinical protocol availability among teaching hospitals. Further study of the effect of protocols on education is needed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Airborne in situ measurements of vertical profiles and horizontal transects of aerosol optical and physical properties, obtained during the Chesapeake Lighthouse and Aircraft Measurements for Satellites (CLAMS) field campaign off the East Coast of the United States during the summer of 2001, are presented. Most of the measurements were obtained in relatively clean air dominated by airflows that had passed over Canada and the northern Atlantic Ocean. Results from the 17 July and 2 August 2001 flights are presented; on these days, the aerosol loading was relatively high. In the lower troposphere, ω0 values at a wavelength of 550 nm were consistently above 0.93 throughout the field experiment, indicating the dominance of weakly absorbing aerosol. Particle number size distributions are presented and discussed for transects at altitudes ∼0.05–3.5 km above mean sea level. Particles with diameters (Dp) <0.1 μm made up the majority of the aerosol number. Accumulation mode particles dominate the number size, surface area, and volume distributions. The variability of optical and physical aerosol parameters was analyzed on horizontal scales of ∼1–4 km. There was little horizontal variability in the single-scattering albedo (ω0), aerosol optical depth (AOD), and accumulation mode size, but greater variability in particle number concentration. Comparisons of the airborne measurements with remotely sensed aerosol parameters, such as ω0 and effective particle radius (reff), derived from the Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) aboard the Terra satellite were generally in good agreement. External counterpulsation (ECP) has been shown to increase exercise tolerance and reduce angina episodes, Canadian Cardiovascular Society Functional (CCSF) class, anginal medication usage, and hospitalizations in refractive CCSF class III and IV stable angina. However, the high pressures and resulting 1.5:1-2:1 peak diastolic to peak systolic pressure (D/S) ratios shown to be optimal in the treatment of angina can cause excessive preload and adverse effects in congestive heart failure (CHF) patients, particularly those with left ventricular ejection fractions <40%. Data were retrospectively analyzed from the Cardiomedics ECP Registry on 127 New York Heart Association (NYHA) class II-IV CHF patients (79.6% men; average age ± SD, 68.2 ± 15.6 years), with a comorbidity of CCSF class III-IV refractive angina, who were serially treated with 35 hours of ECP (1 h/d, 5 d/wk for 7 weeks) at unconventionally low pressures and D/S ratios under a new graduated pressure regimen. The pressures and D/S ratios were gradually increased in stages over the 7-week ECP regimen. The patients were divided into three groups based on the pressures applied and the resulting average D/S ratios (Low, Mid, and High). In the Low D/S ratio group (average D/S ratio 0.7:1), all-cause mortality in the year following ECP treatment was only 1.85% (one of 54 patients), whereas over the same time period in the Mid D/S ratio group (average D/S ratio 1.08:1), all-cause mortality was 7.69%(three of 39 patients) and in the High D/S ratio group (average D/S ratio 1.32:1), all-cause mortality was 8.82% (three of 34 patients). For the Low, Mid, and High D/S ratio groups, respectively: 1) average left ventricular ejection fractions increased 23.0%, 20.1%, and 17.5%; 2) NYHA class declined 36.6%, 29.6%, and 29.6%; and 3) all-cause hospitalizations, including terminal admissions, were reduced 85.7%, 82.6%, and 57.1% in the year following ECP therapy from the prior year. This study used discourse analysis to explore the way in which employees understand work stress. Twenty-two female clerical workers in a Canadian city participated in focus group meetings where they talked about and made sense of their experiences of work stress. The women's accounts were analysed using discourse analysis methods (i.e. an examination of how talk is constructed). The findings revealed that talking about being stressed provides a socially acceptable way of expressing discomfort and regaining a sense of importance that is lost through feeling under-valued and under-appreciated in the organization. In contrast, admitting to being unable to cope with stress was considered to be ‘abnormal’. The stress discourse fosters a sense of helplessness and ambiguity by not acknowledging external influences on clerical workers’ experiences, such as their place within the power structure of the organization, and by limiting their sense of agency and control over problems experienced at work. The implications of these findings for organizational culture and interventions are discussed. For example, employers are encouraged to be conscious of the messages being sent to employees about how negative emotions or distressing experiences at work are to be addressed (i.e. how ‘stress’ is to be managed). Second, it presents a valuation model to identify and measure the various sources of risk, including the term structure and tax and liquidity factors. Abstract--Almost all labor supply models are estimated under the assumption that workers are free to choose their hours. However, theory, casual empiricism and survey data suggest that many workers are not free to vary the hours within a job. Consequently, labor supply estimates based on actual hours of work may be biased. This article presents information on proceedings of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology Meeting, to be held from June 29-July 1, 1995, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Charles Prober from Stanford University reviewed neonatal herpes simplex virus infections (HSV). Primary HSV-2 infection late in pregnancy increases the risk of prematurity and intrauterine growth retardation. Congenital HSV infections resulting from intrauterine infection occur in a small proportion of newborns with HSV. The majority of newborns with HSV infection have acquired the infection during delivery. Occasionally, transmission occurs from direct contact with an individual with a non-genital lesion.

In Montreal, the number of young bilinguals and trilinguals is on the increase, contributing to an increasingly complex language dynamic and, possibly, the breakdown of traditional linguistic frontiers and a significant change in intergroup relations. In this study, we look at how languages are used by young Montrealers in different types of settings, geographic zones, and social networks. Data collected through 190 short in situ observations reveals that Montreal remains a city divided geographically into linguistic zones. Young Montrealers, however, are not bound by their neighborhoods, rather, they move across the city for work, schooling, and leisure activities. Observations of sites in respect to their social function suggests that factors other than geography appear to influence language practices. Within institutional settings, language practices tend to be more conservative. Informal settings, such as cafés and large public events, as well as spaces less clearly identified with a language "community," are more likely to be characterized by bilingual and multilingual practices. Our observations clearly indicate the complexity of the language practices of young Montrealers and the need for a dynamic approach to the study of language use. We propose an approach that follows individuals through the different settings and social networks they traverse in the course of a day, as well as one that takes into account the power relations underlying interactions. Objectives The development of post thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a major source of morbidity and reduced quality of life. We sought to determine the value assigned by clinicians to post thrombotic syndrome and whether clinicians believe that any post thrombotic syndrome or severe post thrombotic syndrome are important outcomes to assess after deep vein thrombosis (DVT) as compared to other outcomes. Design The design of the study was a self-responded electronic survey. Questions for the online survey were designed by two authors (R.I. and E.G.). Methods The survey was distributed to 233 members of Thrombosis Canada and the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery between August 2014 and October 2014. Results There were 84 responses to the survey with complete responses were obtained from 71 respondents for a response rate of 36%. PTS was ranked as a significantly less important outcome after DVT than recurrent DVT, pulmonary embolism during treatment, major bleeding, death, quality of life, venous ulceration and severe post thrombotic syndrome (all comparisons p < 0.05 by two sample t-test). Conclusions Our survey determined that “any post thrombotic syndrome” is perceived by physicians as less important than other DVT outcomes. Thus, “Severe PTS” and not “Any PTS” should be included as an outcome measure in studies investigating acute DVT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
