1. Animal-Assisted Stress Reduction Programs in Higher Education

Abstract

This study investigated the prevalence of increasingly popular animal-assisted stress relief programs at higher education institutions across the United States. Although research on animal-assisted programs is increasing, there is still a lack of information documenting implementation of these programs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the prevalence, structure, and policies around animal-assisted programs. Data from 68 schools across the U.S. revealed that animal visitation at higher education institutions is popular, and some schools have instituted formalized programs. However, there is an overall lack of knowledge regarding standards and requirements that would increase the safety and effectiveness of these programs.

2. Reducing Parental Dissatisfaction with Special Education in Two School Districts: Implementing Conflict Prevention and Alternative Dispute Resolution

Abstract

Parental dissatisfaction with special education services is a national problem. This article presents two districts that have undergone systemwide changes to decrease the dissatisfaction of families who have children with disabilities. Using qualitative inquiry, the authors analyzed documents and observed and interviewed 24 informants about the system problems and changes. Data analysis revealed three themes within the systems problems category: (a) lack of leadership, (b) not keeping up with the law, and (c) parents excluded. Systemwide changes were organized into seven themes: (a) new leadership, (b) partnerships, (c) creative use of resources, (d) updated educational practices, (e) relationship building, (f) teacher and parent support, and (g) alternative dispute resolution. Findings revealed effective leaders who focused on all levels of the system. (Contains 2 figures and 2 tables.)

4. The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act and California's Proposition 227: Implications for English Language Learners with Special Needs

Abstract

California's Proposition 227 (1998) has affected the education of many English language learners (ELLs). However, the extent of Proposition 227's influence on special education planning and practice is unclear. ELLs who have moderate to severe disabilities face major communication obstacles. The present qualitative study looked specifically at the impact of California's Proposition 227 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (1990) on special education teachers' educational planning, assessments, and classroom practices for students identified as ELLs who have moderate to severe disabilities. Findings indicated teacher misinterpretation of Proposition 227, resource scarcity, a lack of administrative support, and the exclusion of parents from decisions regarding which language should be used to instruct ELLs with moderate to severe disabilities.

5. How Differentiated Instruction Helps Struggling Students

Abstract

Given dismal achievement results, Holland Elementary School in the Fresno Unified School District was determined to improve. Six years ago, in the statewide and similar school listing, the school ranked 1 and 1. Under the instructional leadership of their newly assigned principal and through their schoolwide and grade-level professional learning teams, they decided to address their students' diverse learning needs through differentiated instruction. They were right to choose differentiated instruction to meet the learning needs of struggling students. Current achievement results show the school's rankings have moved to 6 and 10. There has been a significant decline in student discipline referrals, teacher morale is high, and remarkable improvement has been made in students' reading, writing and math performance levels. This article describes how Holland Elementary School created a new system of instructional delivery to accelerate the learning of its students.

Abstract

We present the results of intensive field investigations of the scarp associated with the 23 February 1892 earthquake in northern Baja California. Newly recognized additional offsets suggest the rupture was about 58 km in length, twice as long as previous estimates. Slip produced in the 1892 event varied from purely dextral slip near the international border to roughly 1:1 oblique-normal slip farther south along the 2M-km-deep portion of the Laguna Salada basin. The portion of the 1892 rupture with oblique-normal slip comprises a number of short, poorly organized, and discontinuous fault scaips with heights that vary in concert with their strike. Slip was linked farther south to a short, purely normal fault that forms a large releasing bend at the southern termination of the fault zone. Given the distribution of slip along the earthquake and a likely range of locking depths, we conclude the 1892 earthquake was between Mw 7.1-7.3 in magnitude, consistent with previous estimates from macroseismic observations. The length of the Laguna Salada fault that ruptured in 1892 also accommodated minor normal sense displacement along much of its length in the recent 2010 Mw 7.2 El Mayor-Cucapah earthquake, which guided the remapping effort. Abstract

We determined a high-resolution 3D P-wave velocity model for an 80 km x 80 km area around the San Fernando Valley extending 22 km below sea level. We used events recorded from 1981 to 2000 as well as 799 aftershocks of the 1971 San Fernando earthquake recorded by a portable network. The total number of events and stations used were 13,455 and 101, respectively. Most of the events are aftershocks of the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The inversion software includes a raytracing subroutine that can handle the sharp lateral velocity variations that exist in the area. The resulting model shows an overall good agreement with the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) 3D velocity model, but images the deeper structure of the San Fernando valley in more detail. In addition, our results are supported by the inversion of synthetic data and by the remarkable agreement with a density model derived from gravity data along a 55-km-long profile. An approximately 10-km-wide and sharply defined zone of Northridge aftershocks occurred in basement rocks between about 8 and 20 km depth and identifies the fault that slipped during the mainshock. Horizontal slices at deep (8-18 km) levels show that the Northridge earthquake occurred within a high-velocity basement block that may have controlled the size of the earthquake. The fault plane inferred from the seismicity is in good agreement with the geodetic fault plane determined by Hudnut et al. (1996) assuming uniform slip. Most of the aftershocks of the Northridge earthquake occurred within the sedimentary rocks of the San Fernando basin, with a large concentration of events located to the east of the eastern boundary of the mainshock fault plane. The latter events form a zone that dips about 45° to the southwest at depths less than about 14 km. These may represent a lateral ramp. This zone terminates at the steeply inclined eastern edge of the San Fernando basin. These events do not lie on the mainshock fault plane, and because the San Fernando aftershocks also lie east of the Northridge fault plane, the San Fernando and the Northridge mainshocks must have occurred on conjugate en echelon faults (i.e., they do not abut each other). In addition, an 8-km-wide cross section along the density model referred to previously suggests the Northridge aftershocks east of the mainshock and most of the aftershocks of the San Fernando earthquake illuminate two thrust faults that have a common high-velocity basement block in their footwalls. The velocity model produced by our analysis suggests that thrust faults formed by modern contraction in this region are strongly influenced by prior basin and basement block geometry. Abstract

Precise measurements of local magnetic fields have been obtained with a differentially connected array of seven synchronized proton magnetometers located along 60 km of the locked-to-creeping transition region of the San Andreas fault at Parkfield, California, since 1976. The M 6.0 Parkfield earthquake on 28 September 2004, occurred within this array and generated coseismic magnetic field changes of between 0.2 and 0.5 nT at five sites in the network. No preseismic magnetic field changes exceeding background noise levels are apparent in the magnetic data during the month, week, and days before the earthquake (or expected in light of the absence of measurable precursive deformation, seismicity, or pore pressure changes). Observations of electric and magnetic fields from 0.01 to 20 Hz are also made at one site near the end of the earthquake rupture and corrected for common-mode signals from the ionosphere/magnetosphere using a second site some 115 km to the northwest along the fault. These magnetic data show no indications of unusual noise before the earthquake in the ULF band 10.01-20 Hz) as suggested may have preceded the 1989 ML 7.1 Loma Prieta earthquake. Nor do we see electric field changes similar to those suggested to occur before earthquakes of this magnitude from data in Greece. Uniform and variable slip piezomagnetic models of the earthquake, derived from strain, displacement, and seismic data. generate magnetic field perturbations that are consistent with those observed by the magnetometer array. A higher rate of longer-term magnetic field change, consistent with increased loading in the region, is apparent since 1993. This accompanied an increased rate of secular shear strain observed on a two-color EDM network and a small network of borehole tensor strainmeters and increased seismicity dominated by three M 4.5-5 earthquakes roughly a year apart in 1992, 1993, and 1994. Models incorporating all of these data indicate increased slip at depth in the region, and this may have played a role in the final occurrence of the 28 September 2004 M 6.0 Parkfield earthquake. The absence of electric and magnetic field precursors for this, and other earthquakes with M 5-7.3 elsewhere in the San Andreas fault system, indicates useful prediction of damaging earthquakes seems unlikely using these electromagnetic data.
