Partnerships between organizations that engage in land protection are promoted as a way to improve the efficiency of limited conservation budgets. However, limited empirical exploration of the types of organizations involved in partnering and their organizational objectives precludes a holistic understanding of how to integrate partnering into planning for improved conservation outcomes. Using data on protected areas from California, United States, we explored the frequency and extent of partnering between managing organizations. In addition, we analyzed mission statements of partnering and non‐partnering organizations to explore whether organizational objectives were related to observed partnering behavior. We estimated that partnerships managed about 7 million acres, comprising 8% of total protected land area, in California. Furthermore, the organizations that we observed partnering tended to use more environmental themed language in their mission statements, while non‐partnering organizations tended to use language with socioeconomic themes. These results provide empirical evidence of partnering and support further exploration of it as a potentially important mechanism to improve conservation outcomes. In addition, they suggest that current partnering patterns and future opportunities to expand partnerships in protected land management likely depend on organizations pursuing wildlife and nature focused conservation objectives, and to a lesser extent socioeconomic objectives. Conservation biology is particularly susceptible to the knowledge‐implementation gap where academic pursuits do not always meet the needs of practitioners. Providing future practitioners with relevant training and experiences as graduate students can help narrow this gap. An example of one such experience was a partnership between the University of California, Davis and The Nature Conservancy (TNC), established to conduct climate vulnerability assessments of wildlife in California. Here, we discuss the value of the experience for graduate students as both developing conservation professionals. Students were motivated to participate because of the opportunity to work on an applied project and valued collaborating with fellow graduate students. Overall, we felt the project successfully met objectives set out by TNC. In recognition of the value projects like these have, we provide a suite of recommendations based on our experience and lessons learned for academic faculty and conservation practitioners wishing to establish similar opportunities. School environments offer a particularly difficult setting for fostering youth-adult partnerships because of the sharp power and status distinctions among students, teachers, and administrators. Drawing on interview and observational data examining 13 student-voice initiatives in northern California, this research examines the type of supports that can enable the development of strong school-based youth-adult partnerships. The data demonstrate that efforts to reshape student roles face great resistance and require intentional effort on the part of adults and youth to sustain partnerships. Specifically, the institutional constraints of schools required extra attention to fostering more equitable relationships between youth and adults within school walls, establishing the legitimacy of these new relationships through the completion of specific and yet meaningful objectives established by the partnership, and finding sufficient time to engage in the work of building these partnerships. The article focuses on the efforts of the California Space Authority (CSA) towards transformational change through regional economic development to support the needs of space authority and American competitiveness. The article focuses on how substance, form and fiction should be used in the analysis of the tax consequences of partnership mergers, divisions and incorporations in San Diego, California. According to the author, the Partnership Restructuring Election is an acknowledgement that various forms for mergers, divisions and incorporations effectuate the same substantive transactions which should and can be treated the same way for tax purposes. The article focuses on the case of Christo Bardis versus the Capitol Racing concerning the settlement agreement on impact fees in California. Bardis operates harness racing at the Los Alamitos Race Course with his partner Lloyd Arnold. The conflict started when Bardis and Arnold announced their intention to retire from operating harness racing which was met by angry reaction from the racing community accusing them of violating antitrust laws. Bardis sued Capitol Racing who also conducts harness racing to settle agreement regarding impact fees. Capitol filed a cross complaint but later dismissed it. Bardis again filed another action and this time Capitol filed a motion but was denied by the trial court. Capitol filed a motion to strike which was affirmed. Bardis was made to recover costs.

A new program in California partners the California Department of Corrections with a non-profit drug treatment agency on behalf of pregnant or parenting women who are drug offenders with substance abuse histories. The women arc sentenced to the family foundations facility for one year and receive a range of special services to prepare for community re-entry. This paper provides a description of the population and elements of a treatment model designed to reduce recidivism by improving the success of community transition for the targeted families. A case study demonstrates the impact on one mother-child dyad where successful transition to the community and completion of a one-year parole was achieved. Given that the numbers of incarcerated women in California have increased five- fold in the last 20 years (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 1995), that close to 10% of those women were pregnant when they entered prison (California Department of Corrections, 1999), and that over two-thirds of them were convicted for non-violent drug or property crime (California Department of Corrections, 2001), it is incumbent on criminal justice and treatment systems to stop relying on policies and programs designed for male offenders. This article considers the problems of organisational survival, innovation, and interorganisational partnerships for unions and for immigrant community-based organisations. The analysis focuses on the Citizenship Project, a project for assisting and organising Mexican immigrants, launched in 1995 by Teamsters Local 890 in response to the assault on immigrant rights in California. It concludes that new community-based partner organisations sponsored by existing unions can be one effective response to these problems if the participants establish and sustain an appropriate balance of autonomy and accountability. The article also traces the development of a radical and expansive notion of citizenship by the Citizenship Project, and a related set of methods that integrate organising with service delivery, labelled 'citizenship work'. It recommends that non-profit tax-exempt support centres be established at labour centres, labour councils, and international unions in order to lower the costs of such innovation for local unions. The perceived magnitude of perinatal chemical dependency in California was the impetus for an interagency partnership within the California Health and Welfare Agency called Options for Recovery (OFR). It offered alcohol and drug treatment and recovery, case management, and recruitment and training of foster parents and relative caregivers to chemically dependent pregnant and parenting women. A 3-year, multi-method evaluation was conducted that included quantitative analyses of secondary data sources, semi-structured interviews with staff and clients, self-administered surveys of staff and clients, client focus groups, and child developmental assessments. Findings indicate that to achieve success, programs structured on the OFR model must recruit chemically dependent women early in their pregnancies, provide mechanisms for retention, offer a continuum of treatment modalities within the service system, make available a comprehensive array of ancillary services, and be responsive to the social, cultural, and familial context within which these women live.
