Objectives. To verify the prevalence of frailty in patients hospitalized with acute exacerbation of COPD; to compare two frailty assessment methods: Edmonton Scale and the Fried Frailty Phenotype, and to associate frailty with functioning in these patients. Methods. Patients hospitalized due to an acute exacerbation of COPD were included. The assessment of pulmonary function, frailty, and functioning was performed. Frailty assessment was performed by the Edmonton Scale and Fried Frailty Phenotype. Individuals were classified into "frail," "pre-frail" and "non-frail." Functioning was evaluated by the one sit-to-stand test. Results. Thirty-five individuals were included (17 male, 69 ± 9 years; FEV1/FVC 47 ± 10%; FEV1 34 (24–52) % predicted). Participants scored 3 (3-4) points on the Edmonton Scale and 7 (5–9) points on the Fried Frailty Phenotype. According to the Fried model, 17% were considered prefrail and 83% frail and in the Edmonton scale, 20% were classified as nonfrail, 29% prefrail, and 51% frail. There was a positive moderate correlation between the two methods (r = 0.42; p = 0.011); however, there was no agreement between them (p = 0.20). This probably occurs because they assess the same construct, i.e., frailty; however, they are different in their components. There was a negative and moderate correlation between the Fried Frailty Phenotype and functioning (r = −0.43; p = 0.009). Conclusion. Most hospitalized individuals with exacerbated COPD with severe and very severe airflow limitation are frail and the assessment methods correlate, but there is no agreement. This paper aims to verify the association between the combined relationship of physical inactivity and sedentary behaviour (SB) at leisure-time and the prevalence of noncommunicable chronic diseases (NCDs) in Brazilian adults and elderly. This is a cross-sectional study, derived from the VIGITEL system, with individuals ≥18 years old (n = 52,675). The presence of NCDs (diabetes, hypertension, and obesity) and the independent variables were defined by self-report. Binary logistic regression was used. While adults with the presence of, at least, one risky behaviour had a higher odds to have obesity (OR active + high SB: 1.25; 95%CI: 1.01;1.54; OR inactive + low SB: 1.47; 95%CI: 1.25;1.73; OR inactive + high SB: 1.77; 95%CI: 1.47;2.12), the elderly had an increased risk for this outcome only when classified as inactive (OR inactive + low SB: 1.43; 95%CI: 1.17;1.75; OR inactive + high SB: 1.87; 95%CI: 1.47;2.38). Inactive adults with low SB were more likely to have diabetes (OR inactive + low SB: 1.31; 95%CI: 1.00;1.71) and hypertension (OR inactive + low SB: 1.26; 95%CI: 1.08;1.46), while physical inactivity was again more strongly associated with these outcomes in the elderly, for diabetes (OR inactive + low SB: 1.23; 95%CI: 1.02;1.48; OR inactive + high SB: 1.75; 95%CI: 1.39;2.19), and hypertension (OR inactive + low SB: 1.22; 95%CI: 1.05;1.41; OR inactive + high SB: 1.60; 95%CI: 1.33;1.94) Both leisure-time behaviours carry a high risk of the prevalence of different NCDs, however, physical inactivity, isolated or combined, showed a greater association with the evaluated outcomes. Highlights This cross-national survey included representative sample of people ≥18 years old. Adults with at least one evident risky behavior had a higher chance of obesity. Inactive adults with low sedentary behavior had higher chances for diabetes and hypertension. Physical inactivity was more strongly associated with all diseases in the elderly. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate smoking treatment effectiveness and retention in a population with and without mental disorders (MD). Participants received cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) plus nicotine patch alone or in combination with other medications (i.e., gum, bupropion, or nortriptyline) for smoking cessation treatment in a Brazilian Psychosocial Care Center unit (CAPS), taking into account sociodemographics and smoking profile covariates. Methods: The study involved comparison of treatment success (seven-day point prevalence abstinence at the end of the treatment) and retention (presence of the individual in all of the four medical consultations and six group sessions) in two subsamples of patients with MD (n = 267) and without MD (n = 397) who were included in a six-week treatment provided by a CAPS from 2007 to 2013. The treatment protocol comprised group CBT and pharmacotherapy (nicotine patches, nicotine gums, and bupropion and nortriptyline available, prescribed by psychiatrists). Results: Within patients with MD, CBT plus nicotine patch plus bupropion (aOR = 2.00, 95% CI [1.14, 3.50], p =.015) and CBT plus nicotine patch plus gum (aOR = 2.10, 95% CI [1.04, 4.23], p =.036) were associated with treatment success. Within patients without MD, female gender (aOR = 0.60, 95% CI [0.37, 0.95], p =.031) and lower Heaviness of Smoking Index score (aOR = 0.80, 95% CI [0.65, 0.99], p =.048) were associated with treatment success. No variable was associated with dropout or retention within patients with or without MD. Conclusion: Our findings support the use of CBT plus nicotine patch plus bupropion as well as CBT plus nicotine patch plus gum in samples with high rates of medical, psychiatric, and addiction disorders. These findings support those of previous studies in the general population. Pharmacological treatment associated with group CBT based on cognitive-behavioral concepts and combined with ongoing MD treatment seems to be the best option for smoking cessation treatment among patients with MD. Units that deal with patients with MD, such as CAPS in Brazil, should be encouraged to treat smoking addiction in this population. Objectives: To analyse the associations between high screen time and overweight, poor dietary habits and physical activity in adolescents according to sex. Methods: The study comprised 515 boys and 716 girls aged 14–17 years from Londrina, Brazil. Nutritional status (normal weight or overweight/obese) was assessed by calculating the body mass index. Eating habits and time spent in physical activity were reported using a questionnaire. The measurement of screen time considered the time spent watching television, using a computer and playing video games during a normal week. Associations between high screen time and dependent variables (nutritional status, eating habits and physical activity levels) were assessed by binary logistic regression, adjusted for sociodemographic and lifestyle variables. Results: Most adolescents (93.8% of boys and 87.2% of girls) spent more than 2 hours per day in screen-time activities. After adjustments, an increasing trend in the prevalence of overweight and physical inactivity with increasing time spent on screen activities was observed for both sexes. Screen times of >4 hours/day compared with <2 hours/day were associated with physical inactivity, low consumption of vegetables and high consumption of sweets only in girls and the consumption of soft drinks in both sexes. Conclusions: The frequency of overweight and physical inactivity increased with increasing screen time in a trending manner and independently of the main confounders. Here we report the results from a genome-wide linkage scan to identify genes and chromosomal regions that influence quantitative immune response traits, using multi-case leprosy and tuberculosis families from north-eastern Brazil. Total plasma IgE, antigen-specific IgG to Mycobacterium leprae soluble antigen (MLSA), M. tuberculosis soluble antigen (MTSA) and M. tuberculosis purified protein derivative (PPD), and antigen-specific lymphocyte proliferation (stimulation index or SI) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) release to MLSA and PPD, were measured in 16 tuberculosis (184 individuals) and 21 leprosy (177 individuals) families. The individuals were genotyped at 382 autosomal microsatellite markers across the genome. The adjusted immune-response phenotypes were analysed using a variety of variance components and regression-based methods. These analyses highlighted a number of practical issues and problems with regard to implementation of the methods and, interestingly, differences were observed between several standard statistical and genetic analysis packages used. From this we determined that, for this set of traits in these pedigrees, significant p values for linkage using variance components analysis, supported by significance using the Visscher-Hopper modification of the Haseman-Elston method, provided the most compelling evidence for linkage. Using these criteria, linkage was seen for: total plasma IgE on chromosome 2; IgG to MLSA on chromosomes 8, 17 and 21; IgG to PPD on chromosome 12; SI to PPD on chromosome 1; IFN-γ to MLSA on chromosomes 6, 7, 10, 12 and 14; and IFN-γ to PPD on chromosomes 1, 16 and 19.
