This article analyses the reconfiguration of religious identity in the Druze community in Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil, which was formed by the arrival of immigrants from Lebanon in the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. The immigrants created ethnic and religious institutions destined to maintain Druze identity and its Islamic character. However, the transmission of religious knowledge to the generations born in Brazil was fragmentary and imperfect. Nevertheless, Druze identity was maintained by many and completely recreated in the religious context of Catholicism and Spiritism, while the connection to Islam faded away. The analysis focuses on how religious authorities and the belief in reincarnation were the main elements that allowed continuity in religious identity together with the transformation of tradition. The relationship between patients and dentists today is more worn and less based on trust, which can lead to high rates of lawsuits related to civil liability and dental malpractice. Aim: verify if there has been an increase in the number of lawsuits related to questioned dental treatments, and against dentists registered in the city of São Paulo (SP), Brazil, from 2012 to 2017. Methods: We outlined an overview based on the list from the São Paulo Council of Dentistry containing 30,238 registered dentists in the city of São Paulo, and searched for lawsuits on the public base of the São Paulo State Court's. Results: The search, after the inclusion and exclusion criteria, found 247 lawsuits, with dental implants as the most involved specialty. The total indemnities requested ranged from R$ 227.42 to R$ 937,000.00, but no indemnity granted exceeded the amount of R$ 100,000.00. Conclusion: According to the analysis of cases, there is a progressive increase in the number of civil liability lawsuits against dentists involving dental malpractice litigance. Background: American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) is a widespread anthropozoonosis caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania and is considered a serious public health problem. The aim of this study was to provide a descriptive analysis of confirmed ATL cases and evaluate the spatial distribution of ATL in high-risk transmission areas from the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.Methods: An ecological, analytical, and retrospective study of the confirmed cases of ATL in Minas Gerais from 2007 to 2017 was conducted. To characterize these cases, multiple correspondence analysis and georeferencing of the ATL prevalence rates in the municipalities were conducted based on variables obtained at Sistema Nacional de Agravos de Notificação and Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística databases.Results: There were 13,025 confirmed cases of ATL from 74.4% (635) municipalities of Minas Gerais, corresponding to a prevalence rate of 66.5 cases for every 100,000 inhabitants. Males aged 20 to 59 years and individuals who attended elementary school were most affected with ATL. Multiple correspondence analysis presented an accumulated qui-squared value of 44.74%, proving that there was a relationship between the variables, including ethnicity, age, pregnancy status, zone of infection, and number of cases.Conclusion: We confirmed that ATL is endemic to Minas Gerais, and there is high risk of infection within the municipalities due to a high rate of parasite transmission. The occurrence of infection in children, pregnant women, and the indigenous population demonstrates the need for the government to expand social policies aimed at vulnerable groups. The aim of this article is to analyse the influence of European requirements concerning cattle sanity and beef safety in the development of Brazilian laws in such areas, with special attention paid to the role of European Union audits on the development of Brazilian laws. The laws on beef from Brazil and Europe were identified by searching tools of Brazilian and European agricultural organizations (Sislegis and Eurolex) and categorized according to common themes and their chronological developments. Considering the current tendency for globalization and the standardization of international trade laws, according mainly to the requirement of the World Trade Organization Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures signed in 1995, it was possible to identify a recent updating of beef legislation, both Brazilian and European, aiming to satisfy this new panorama. The article focuses on the processes of religious codification and identity formation in the Muslim communities in Brazil. It examines the relation between Muslim identity and Arab ethnicity brought by the processes linking national, local, and transnational realities. It contends the consideration of local community as the basic unit of analysis with the configuration of local and supralocal influences.

The article discusses research on ovine zygomycosis that affect the sheep in Mato Grosso State, Brazil. It references a study by Luciano Nakazato and colleagues, published in the 2010 issue of the "Journal of the Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation." The researchers assessed nasopharyngeal zygomycosis and rhinofacial zygomycosis in relation to the development of Conidobolus spp. They found that a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test should be performed to determine the factors that cause ovine zygomycosis.

This study focused on estimating the herd-level and animal-level prevalences, and identifying risk factors associated with bovine cysticercosis in the State of Paraíba, Northeastern Brazil. The state was divided into three sampling strata: Sertao, Borborema and Zona da Mata/Agreste. For each sampling stratum, herd-level and animal-level prevalences were estimated by a two-stage sampling survey. First, a pre-established number of herds (primary sampling units) were randomly selected; second, within each herd a pre-established number of cows aged ≥24 months were systematically selected (secondary sampling units). Ten animals were sampled in herds with up to 99 cows aged over 24 months; 15 animals were sampled in herds with 100 or more cows aged over 24 months; and all animals were sampled in those with up to 10 cows aged over 24 months. In total, 2382 animals were sampled from 474 herds. Serological diagnosis was initially performed by the indirect ELISA, and positive sera were confirmed by immunoblot. A herd was deemed positive if it included at least one positive animal in herds of up to 29 females, and two positive animals in herds with more than 29 females. The herd-level prevalence in the State of Paraíba was 10.8% (95% CI = 8.1%–14.1%), 10.3% (95% CI = 6.4%–16.1%) in the region of Sertão, 6.9% (95% CI = 3.9%–12.1%) in Borborema, and 13.8% (95% CI = 9.3%–20.2%) in Agreste/Zona da Mata. The animal-level prevalence was 2.3% (95% CI = 1.6%–3.3%) in the State of Paraíba, 1.4% (95% CI = 0.8%–2.5%) in Sertão, 3.6% (95% CI = 1.7%–7.4%) in Borborema, and 3.2% (95% CI = 1.9%–5.4%) in Agreste/Zona da Mata. The risk factors identified were as follows: animal purchasing (OR = 2.19) and presence of flooded pastures (OR = 1.99). Our findings suggest that bovine cysticercosis herd-level seroprevalence in the State of Paraíba, Northeastern Brazil, is high, and support the idea that prevention measures should be applied at herd level and farmers should restrict the access of their cattle to flooded pastures. The envenomation from the Bothrops genus is characterized by systemic and local effects caused by the main toxin families in the venom. In Bothrops pubescens venom we were able to identify 89 protein groups belonging to 13 toxin families with the bottom-up proteomics approach and 40 unique proteoforms belonging to 6 toxin families with the top-down proteomics approach. We also identified multi-proteoform complexes of dimeric L-amino acid oxidase using native top-down mass spectrometry. Objective: to analyze the social representations about sexually transmitted infections elaborated by undergraduate students., Methods: a descriptive, qualitative study, in the light of the structural approach of Social Representation Theory, carried out with 160 young undergraduate students, in the second half of 2019, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Data were collected using a sociodemographic characterization questionnaire, knowledge and practices for preventing sexually transmitted infections, analyzed using descriptive statistics and a form of free evocations with the inducing term STD, analyzed using prototypical and similarity analysis., Results: the representation's possible central nucleus is composed of lexicons aids, disease and HIV; the peripheral system by syphilis, sex, condoms, gonorrhea, prevention, infection, carelessness, HPV, herpes, ignorance, treatment, fear, unprotected-sex and danger., Final Considerations: social thinking about sexually transmitted infections is characterized by their recognition as diseases, which require barrier prevention measures, associating with unsafe sexual practices that arouse fear.

Objective: to discuss undergraduate students' sexual behavior from the perspective of social markers and cross-cultural care proposed by Madeleine Leininger., Methods: descriptive-exploratory qualitative research, with a theoretical-philosophical foundation in the Transcultural Theory. Convenience sample was composed of 57 young people from two universities in Rio de Janeiro. The focus groups' content were analyzed lexically using the IRAMUTEQ software., Results: four classes emerged: Young people's sexual scripts: between the fear of an unplanned pregnancy and the risk of exposure to sexually transmitted infections; Affective relationships: trust in steady sexual partners, apparent sense of security and disuse of condoms; Sexual practices, gender and cultural determinants: distinction in men's and women's role; Sexual partnerships, negotiation of condom use and vulnerability to sexually transmitted infections., Final Considerations: challenges are perceived for the attention to undergraduate students' sexual health, who verbalized risky sexual behaviors due to sociocultural vulnerabilities.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third most common cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. The Brazilian Society of Hepatology (SBH) published in 2020 the updated recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of HCC. Since then, new data have emerged in the literature, including new drugs approved for the systemic treatment of HCC that were not available at the time. The SBH board conducted an online single-topic meeting to discuss and review the recommendations on the systemic treatment of HCC. The invited experts were asked to conduct a systematic review of the literature on each topic related to systemic treatment and to present the summary data and recommendations during the meeting. All panelists gathered together for discussion of the topics and elaboration of the updated recommendations. The present document is the final version of the reviewed manuscript containing the recommendations of SBH and its aim is to assist healthcare professionals, policy-makers, and planners in Brazil and Latin America with systemic treatment decision-making of patients with HCC.

Bovine cysticercosis remains as one of the most important cause of carcasses and viscera condemnation in Brazilian slaughterhouses. However, the efficiency of post-mortem inspection for the diagnosis of this zoonotic disease is relatively low, and few available studies were performed through serological exams. This study evaluated the frequency of bovine cysticercosis in cattle herds located in different farms of the state of Rondônia, Brazil. Among the 987 animals slaughtered from 33 farms, 21 animals (Frequency: 2.13%; 95C.I. 1.23-3.03) were considered as positive through indirect ELISA and confirmed by Immunoblot tests and the cysticercosis was detected in 12 farms (36.36% - C.I. 95% 19.95-52.78). The disease was detected in the municipalities Vale do Paraíso (12.50%), Theobroma (8.11%), Guaporé (7.27%), Rolim de Moura (5.71%), Presidente Médici (5.0%), Ouro Preto do Oeste (4.69%), Nova União (1.77%), Nova Brasilândia d'Oeste (1.14%) and Ministro Andreazza (1.01%). Chicken meat is considered an important vehicle of foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella spp., demanding an effective control of its contamination during industrial processing. This study aimed to investigate the presence of Salmonella spp. and microbiological indicators at different stages of processing in two slaughterhouses (Sh1, high-capacity; Sh2, low-capacity). Surface samples of chicken carcasses were collected in the following sequential stages: (A) immediately before evisceration, (B) after evisceration, (C) after showering, and (D) after chiller. All samples were submitted for detection of Salmonella spp. and enumeration of mesophilic aerobes, total coliforms, thermotolerant coliforms, and Escherichia coli. The obtained means and frequencies were compared by analysis of variance and chi-square tests (p < 0.05), considering different slaughterhouses and stages of processing. No significant differences were observed between the frequencies of Salmonella spp. obtained at different steps in Sh1 and Sh2 (p > 0.05). Sh2 showed higher levels of microbiological contamination when compared with Sh1 for mesophilic aerobes (in stages B and D), total coliforms and thermotolerant coliforms (stage D), and E. coli (all stages) (p < 0.05). The variation in the levels of contamination by microbiological indicators over the processing indicated the significance of different control procedures adopted by slaughterhouses for the microbiological quality of chicken carcasses.
