Satellite-based precipitation products (SPPs) are essential for climate monitoring, especially in regions with sparse observational data. This study compares the performance of the latest version (V07B) and its predecessor (V06B) of the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) across South America and the adjacent oceans. It focuses on evaluating their accuracy under different precipitation regimes in Brazil using 22 years of IMERG Final data (2000–2021), aggregated into seasonal totals (summer, autumn, winter, and spring). The observations used for the evaluation were organized into 0.1° × 0.1° grid points to match IMERG's spatial resolution. The analysis was restricted to grid points containing at least one rain gauge, and in cases where multiple gauges were present within a grid point the average value was used. The evaluation metrics included the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and categorical indices. The results reveal that while both versions effectively capture major precipitation systems such as the mesoscale convective system (MCS), South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ), and Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), significant discrepancies emerge in high-rainfall areas, particularly over oceans and tropical zones. Over the continent, however, these discrepancies are reduced due to the correction of observations in the final version of IMERG. A comprehensive analysis of the RMSE across Brazil, both as a whole and within the five analyzed regions, without differentiating precipitation classes, demonstrates that version V07B effectively reduces errors compared to version V06B. The analysis of statistical indices across Brazil's five regions highlights distinct performance patterns between IMERG versions V06B and V07B, driven by regional and seasonal precipitation characteristics. V07B demonstrates a superior performance, particularly in regions with intense rainfall (R1, R2, and R5), showing a reduced RMSE and improved categorical indices. These advancements are linked to V07B's reduced overestimation in cold-top cloud regions, although both versions consistently overestimate at rain/no-rain thresholds and for light rainfall. However, in regions prone to underestimation, such as the interior of the Northeastern region (R3) during winter, and the northeastern coast (R4) during winter and spring, V07B exacerbates these issues, highlighting challenges in accurately estimating precipitation from warm-top cloud systems. This study concludes that while V07B exhibits notable advancements, further enhancements are needed to improve accuracy in underperforming regions, specifically those influenced by warm-cloud precipitation systems. The present study evaluated over two years the seasonal dynamics of Rhipicephalus microplus in a Cerrado biome of midwestern Brazil (Goiânia, Goiás) and correlated the current climatic conditions (environmental temperature, insolation, rainfall, relative humitidy and saturation deficit of the atmosphere) of this site with 30 years ago. In addition, the data collected in the present research were compared with climatic conditions data and R. microplus population dynamics conducted by our group in other regions (Formiga, Minas Gerais and Jaboticabal, São Paulo) within the same biome. For the parasitic phase dynamics, R. microplus females (4.5–8.0 mm) counts were performed on tick natural infested cows kept in Panicum maximum paddocks. To verify the larvae dynamics on pasture the flannel dragg technique on natural infested pasture was performed, and the height of the grass was measured. Five peaks of engorged R. microplus females on animals and larvae infestations on pastures were observed. Being three and two peaks during the rainy and dry season of the year, respectively. Insolation (r = 0.8758; P = 0.00009; R² = 0.7670), rainfall (r = -0.8572; P = 0.0002; R² = 0.7348), maximum environmental temperature in summer (r = 0.9999; P < 0.0087; R² = 0.9988) and the saturation deficit of the atmosphere in autumn (r = -0.9789; P = 0.0211; R² = 0.9582) influenced the seasonal dynamics of R. microplus larvae on pastures. While the forage height did not influence the number of larvae found on pasture (r = 0.1545; P = 0.7682; R² = 0.0239). The comparison between the climatic data of the last 30 years with the current climatological data (2012 to 2019) in the state of Goiás, and the comparison with R. microplus population dynamics from other two locations in the same biome indicated that the increase of the environmental temperature due to the global warming possibly is a determining factor which increase the number of one or up two tick annual peaks. In addition, this climatic variable was responsible for increase the population density of ticks on pastures and animals observed in July/winter of the present study, in comparison to other regions with the same biome, as discussed in this work. The Araucaria Mixed Forests (AMF) are subtropical conifer-hardwood mixed forests that are part of the Atlantic forest floristic dominion in Brazil and Argentina. The AMF is dominated by the conifer Araucaria angustifolia (hereafter araucaria), accompanied by a diversity of angiosperms. Its distribution largely corresponds to the 13°C isotherm and is associated with overall lower temperature, frost-prone, and wetter climates than neighboring vegetation types. Palynological research and bioclimatic modelling have yielded somewhat conflicting results but suggest intense forest-grassland dynamics, with grasslands possibly dominating the landscape during the drier and colder last glacial maximum. Araucaria is a cultural keystone species whose distribution has been greatly fostered by Amerindian activity in the last few millennia. Angiosperms form a lower layer beneath araucaria canopies, and they seem to be geographically structured into a wetter and colder eastern and a drier and hotter western portion. Araucaria attain large sizes and high longevity but is unable to regenerate under the shade cast by angiosperm canopies and need large-scale disturbances for successfully complete their life-cycles. This cycle has been synthesised in the non-equilibrium Lozenge model of forest dynamics. Regeneration opportunities arise from the frequent multiple treefall gaps produced by the tornado and windstorm-prone climate of subtropical South America and by the grazing-, fire-, and nurse-plant successional dynamics of the forest-grassland mosaic. Dispersal is mediated by a complex web of interactions with birds and mammals. A review of the dynamics of southern Oceanic Temperate Forests indicates that the dynamics of the AMF fits a prevailing pattern in these forests that corresponds to the Lozenge model. Deforestation and degradation by logging and cattle grazing have impacted most of the AMF original range. Similarly to what happened to Agathis australis in New Zealand, the establishment of commercial plantations still need incentives and research to thrive and produce large-scale environmental benefits. The responses of forest communities to interacting anthropogenic disturbances like climate change and logging are poorly known. Subtropical forests have been heavily modified by humans and their response to climate change is poorly understood. We investigated the 9‐year change observed in a mixed conifer‐hardwood Atlantic forest mosaic that included both mature and selectively logged forest patches in subtropical South America. We used demographic monitoring data within 10 1 ha plots that were subjected to distinct management histories (plots logged until 1955, until 1987, and unlogged) to test the hypothesis that climate change affected forest structure and dynamics differentially depending on past disturbances. We determined the functional group of all species based on life‐history affinities as well as many functional traits like leaf size, specific leaf area, wood density, total height, stem slenderness, and seed size data for the 66 most abundant species. Analysis of climate data revealed that minimum temperatures and rainfall have been increasing in the last few decades of the 20th century. Floristic composition differed mainly with logging history categories, with only minor change over the nine annual census intervals. Aboveground biomass increased in all plots, but increases were higher in mature unlogged forests, which showed signs of forest growth associated with increased CO2, temperature, and rainfall/treefall gap disturbance at the same time. Logged forests showed arrested succession as indicated by reduced abundances of Pioneers and biomass‐accumulators like Large Seeded Pioneers and Araucaria, as well as reduced functional diversity. Management actions aimed at creating regeneration opportunities for long‐lived pioneers are needed to restore community functional diversity, and ecosystem services such as increased aboveground biomass accumulation. We conclude that the effects of climate drivers on the dynamics of Brazilian mixed Atlantic forests vary with land‐use legacies, and can differ importantly from the ones prevalent in better known tropical forests. This study analysed the modulation of jump performance, vertical stiffness as well as joint and intralimb coordination throughout a 30-s vertical jump test. Twenty male athletes performed the test on a force plate while undergoing kinematic analysis. Jump height, power output, ground contact time, vertical stiffness, maximum knee and hip flexion angles, and coordination by continuous relative phase (CRP) were analysed. Analysis of variance was used to compare variables within deciles, and t-tests were used to compare CRP data between the initial and final jumps. Results showed reduction in jump height, power output, and vertical stiffness, with an increase in contact time found during the test. Maximum knee and hip flexion angles declined, but hip angle decreased earlier (10–20% of the test) than knee angle (90–100%). No changes were observed in CRP for thigh–leg coupling when comparing initial and final jumps, but the trunk–thigh coupling was more in-phase near the end of the test. We conclude that fatigue causes reduction in jump performance, as well as changes in stiffness and joint angles. Furthermore, changes in intralimb coordination appear at the last 10% of the test, suggesting a neuromotor mechanism to counterbalance the loss of muscle strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

1. As human population size increases, demand for natural resources will increase. Logging pressure related to increasing demands continues to threaten remote areas of Amazonian forest. A harvest protocol is required to provide renewable timber resources that meet consumer needs while minimizing negative effects on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Reduced-impact logging (RIL) may be a viable option to achieve these goals. 2. Effects of RIL (18 m3 ha−1) and forest physiognomy were assessed for populations of bats from Amazonian terra firme forest in Brazil at 20–42 months postharvest. 3. Based on 64 512 meter-hours of netting, 1468 bats were captured representing 47 species, 30 genera, four families and five feeding ensembles. Five species (one nectarivore and four frugivores) responded to management in a consistent manner: four were more abundant in logged forest and one was more abundant in undisturbed forest. Ten species (one nectarivore, two gleaning animalivores and seven frugivores) responded to forest physiognomy in a consistent manner: nine were more abundant in closed-canopy sites and one was more abundant in gaps. Three species (all frugivores) exhibited idiosyncratic responses to management that were contingent on physiognomy. 4. Using qualitative measures (changes in status from common to rare, or from present to absent), RIL elicited negative responses from 16 species, mostly rare taxa. After accounting for differences in total number of collected individuals, control forest harboured seven to 15 more rare species than did forest subjected to RIL. 5. Synthesis and applications. In the short term, RIL generally did not negatively affect populations of abundant bats. In contrast, reductions in abundance or local extirpation in response to RIL generally characterized uncommon or rare species. Arrangement of RIL sites in a matrix of undisturbed forest may allow source–sink dynamics to mitigate effects of RIL on rare or sensitive species and enhance sustainability at a regional scale. The effects of human impact and environmental heterogeneity on the tree species diversity were assessed in 20 fragments of tropical montane seasonal forest in southeastern Brazil. Previous surveys of the tree community, soils and topography of the fragments provided the bulk of the data. The diversity parameters used were the means of species richness, Shannon diversity (H'), and Pielou evenness (J') obtained from ''bootstrap'' sub-samplings of 1,000 trees. Morphometric variables obtained for the fragments included total, edge, and inner areas. Investigation forms were used to survey the history of human interventions and prepare an impacts matrix containing scores assigned to assess the extent, severity and duration of selected impacts. Scores for overall environmental impacts were obtained from the ordination scores produced by a multivariate analysis of the impacts matrix. A multivariate analysis of the standard deviations of soil variables was used to identify the variable which contributed most to soil heterogeneity. The same procedure was repeated for the variables related to topography and ground-water regime. The three species diversity parameters were related to the proportions of edges, the overall impacts scores, and the standard deviations of two selected soil and topographic variables. The species diversity in the fragments increased with increasing heterogeneity of both soil chemical properties and topographic features, and decreased with increasing proportion of forest edges. The evenness component of species diversity also increased with increasing severity of overall environmental impacts. This probably occurred because the 20 fragments did not include highly disturbed forests in the range and the intermediate disturbance effect on species diversity was therefore detected. ABSTRACT The characteristics of nitrogen acquisition, transport and assimilation were investigated in species of an Atlantic Forest succession over calcareous soil in south-eastern Brazil. Differences in behaviour were observed within the regeneration guilds. Pioneer species showed high leaf nitrogen contents, a high capacity to respond to increased soil nitrogen availability, a high capacity for leaf nitrate assimilation and were characterized by the transport of nitrate + asparagine. At the other end of the succession, late secondary species had low leaf nitrogen contents, little capacity to respond to increased soil nitrogen availability, low leaf nitrate assimilation and were active in the transport of asparagine + arginine. The characteristics of nitrogen nutrition in some early secondary species showed similarities to those of pioneer species whereas others more closely resembled late secondary species. Average leaf δ 15 N values increased along the successional gradient. The results indicate that the nitrogen metabolism characteristics of species may be an additional ecophysiological tool in classifying tropical forest tree species into ecological guilds, and may have implications for regeneration programmes in degraded areas. Gap phase dynamics are the dominant mode of forest turnover in tropical forests. However, gap processes are infrequently studied at the landscape scale. Airborne lidar data offer detailed information on three-dimensional forest structure, providing a means to characterize fine-scale (1 m) processes in tropical forests over large areas. Lidar-based estimates of forest structure (top down) differ from traditional field measurements (bottom up), and necessitate clear-cut definitions unencumbered by the wisdom of a field observer. We offer a new definition of a forest gap that is driven by forest dynamics and consistent with precise ranging measurements from airborne lidar data and tall, multi-layered tropical forest structure. We used 1000 ha of multi-temporal lidar data (2008, 2012) at two sites, the Tapajos National Forest and Ducke Reserve, to study gap dynamics in the Brazilian Amazon. Here, we identified dynamic gaps as contiguous areas of significant growth, that correspond to areas > 10 m2, with height <10 m. Applying the dynamic definition at both sites, we found over twice as much area in gap at Tapajos National Forest (4.8%) as compared to Ducke Reserve (2.0%). On average, gaps were smaller at Ducke Reserve and closed slightly more rapidly, with estimated height gains of 1.2 m y-1 versus 1.1 m y-1 at Tapajos. At the Tapajos site, height growth in gap centers was greater than the average height gain in gaps (1.3 m y-1 versus 1.1 m y-1). Rates of height growth between lidar acquisitions reflect the interplay between gap edge mortality, horizontal ingrowth and gap size at the two sites. We estimated that approximately 10% of gap area closed via horizontal ingrowth at Ducke Reserve as opposed to 6% at Tapajos National Forest. Height loss (interpreted as repeat damage and/or mortality) and horizontal ingrowth accounted for similar proportions of gap area at Ducke Reserve (13% and 10%, respectively). At Tapajos, height loss had a much stronger signal (23% versus 6%) within gaps. Both sites demonstrate limited gap contagiousness defined by an increase in the likelihood of mortality in the immediate vicinity (~6 m) of existing gaps.
