The objective of this study is to identify the main motivations and expectations for seeking spiritual treatment (ST) in  spiritist centers. This is a qualitative study developed at two spiritist centers in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. ST was considered as the set of activities that use magnetic current as the main treatment method. We observed that most of the participants first sought treatments from health professionals and that, after insufficient results, they went in search of ST. Their treatments take place simultaneously and, for the participants, they complement each other. The motivations that led the participants to ST ranged from physical reasons to mental health complaints and even family conflicts. In this article, I draw on the specific case studies of the Xakriabá people and the Judicial District of Manga, and the Maxakali people and the Judicial District of Águas Formosas, both located in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. I examine how criminal justice officials apply dominant concepts of indigeneity in these regional contexts, showing how they arbitrarily construct and deploy the category of Indigenous person based on essentialist assumptions of indigeneity that ignore Indigenous peoples' self-identification as such. This adds to scholarship on how indigeneity is institutionally conceived and applied within the justice system in ways that contrast with Indigenous notions of it and aim to deny Indigenous persons recognition in legal processes. By providing specific accounts of how Indigenous defendants are treated in the justice system and experience loss of rights, I consider the professional practices of state officials within the broader framework of Brazilian indigenist policies. The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence and patterns of alcohol consumption and associated factors in the Karipuna indigenous people. A cross-sectional population-based study was conducted with 230 Karipunan respondents aged 15 or over from 12 villages in the state of Amapá, in the extreme northern Brazilian Amazon. The participants completed the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). The prevalence of alcohol use among the Karipuna was 70%. Of these, 59.6% had low-risk use, 38.3% had hazardous or harmful alcohol use, and 2.2% met criteria for probable alcohol dependence. Overall, 40.5% of the respondents had hazardous or harmful alcohol use; 66.6% were men, and 33.4% were women. In the regression analysis, age, sex, religion, not having an occupation, being a student, low educational attainment, suicidal ideation and having sexual intercourse after alcohol consumption were associated with hazardous or harmful alcohol use. Sex and Catholic religion were risk factors for this alcohol use pattern among the Karipuna. The prevalence of problematic alcohol use among the Karipuna is higher than that observed among the general Brazilian population, and preventive screenings should be widely implemented. Efforts to address and minimize the consequences of harmful and hazardous alcohol use among Brazilian Amazonian indigenous populations could be developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brazilian mental health focuses on the social determination model within mental health policies and interventions to address mental and social suffering as resulting from social exclusion and structural violence. Structural concerns focused on class stratification and socioeconomic inequalities overweight cultural ones in Brazilian mental health. In this article we examine, first the role of culture and interculturality in mental health practices and mental health guidelines for health professionals continuing training in Brazil. Second, we explore interviews with health professionals around Continuing Education in Health provided by mental health collaborative care initiatives within primary health care as illustration of a local practice of structural competency in mental health. Finally, we examine the central role played by the practices of territorialisation in shaping health care training and care interventions. The focus on the territory can promote critical apprehensions of the intercultural and structural factors that shape health practices, enrich health professional education oriented towards the basic tenets of social medicine and provide global discussions around structural competency with innovative ways of thinking about health education, health care and spatiality. There has been an alarming rise in suicide attempts among Indigenous people in Brazil, leading to national concerns about the provision of psychosocial care and professional support. In this study, we make an attempt to understand the perspectives of professionals in assisting Indigenous people from a specific group, the Inỹ, and identify the specific challenges of addressing issues through the mental health care system related specifically to suicide prevention. Using a qualitative approach with participant observation and semi-structured interviews, the research included Indigenous and their families assisted by three public institutions and the professionals that work in public psychosocial assistance. For this paper, we examined the tensions, conflicts, and challenges of the healthcare professionals at one of these institutions, a Psychosocial Care Center in the state of Goiás/Brazil. For data analysis, a sociocultural protocol was built to identify dialogical tensions between the different thematic fields of mental health care. The findings reveal that the theme of suicide was an important concern in the daily work with the community. Still, there were significant issues related to the assumptions, methodology, and meaning of care between the professionals and the community, on account of which the objective of the programme to address suicide attempts had not been effective or successful. The discussion of the results raises several critical questions about the possible contributions of dialogical cultural psychology in the context of Indigenous health. In lowland South America, sacred food plants have taken an ethnographic back seat to psychotropic plants. Yet, such foods are often central to local understandings of mythology, healing, ceremony, and spiritual well‐being. In this article, I elucidate the sacred nature of two kinds of food plants that occupy special sociocultural spaces among the A'uwẽ (Xavante) in Central Brazil: cultivated maize and collected root vegetables. Although these are not the only sacred food plants in A'uwẽ society, they are iconic because they are considered uniquely appropriate gifts during certain ceremonial and ritual events. I also explore how I conducted research about ceremonial ethnobotanical topics in a society that considers most sacred and spiritual knowledge privileged. Both sacred plant foods highlighted here continue to be commonly given as presents expressing gratitude to others during popular ceremonial occasions, thereby maintaining them in the collective consciousness as integral components of contemporary social life. This study aims to estimate a population-based cancer incidence among indigenous populations in the State of Acre, Brazilian Western Amazon, to provide knowledge about cancer epidemiological profiles contributing to healthcare policies and service planning. Although cancer epidemiology in Brazil is well described through incidence and mortality estimate in the general population, cancer estimates among indigenous peoples are still unknown. This is a descriptive study of cancer incidence among the indigenous population (2000–2012) in the State of Acre, Brazil. The sources used were population-based cancer registries of Goiânia, hospital-based cancer registry of Acre, São Paulo, and Porto Velho; Special Indigenous Health Districts databases of Acre, Goiânia, and São Paulo; Mortality Information System, and Rio Branco's public and private laboratories' reports. Standardized Incidence Ratio (SIR) was calculated using cancer incidence rates of Goiânia as reference. From 137 cancer cases, 51.8% occurred in women and 32.1% in people aged 70 +. Among men, the most frequent cancer sites were stomach (25.8%), liver (15.1%), colorectal (7.6%), leukemia (7.6%), and prostate (6.1%). Among women, the most frequent were cervical (50.7%), stomach (8.5%), leukemia (5.6%), liver (4.3%), and breast (4.3%). Among men, there was an excess of cancer cases for stomach (SIR=1.75; 95%CI:1.67–1.83), liver (SIR=1.77; 95%CI:1.66–1.88), and leukemia (SIR=1.64; 95%CI:1.49–1.78). In women, an excess of cancer cases was observed for cervical (SIR=4.49; 95%CI:4.34–4.64) and liver (SIR=2.11; 95%CI:1.88–2.34). A lower cancer incidence for prostate (SIR=0.06; 95%CI:0.05–0.07) and female breast (SIR=0.12; 95%CI:0.11–0.14) was observed. Cervical, stomach, and liver cancers corresponded to 52% of the cases and were highly incident among the Brazilian indigenous population of Western Amazon compared to non-indigenous counterparts. Despite the low frequency of breast and prostate cancer, the fact they were present among indigenous peoples suggests a complex epidemiological transition framework in these populations. Our objective is to critically review the literature addressing the strategic role of nurses in the daily primary care of arterial hypertension in Indigenous communities in Brazil. We selected studies based on an initial keyword search of major bibliographic indexing databases for the years 2000 to 2020 and manual search. Further selection was based on topical, methodological, and thematic relevance, as well as evaluation of scholarship quality and pertinence to our chosen narrative. The literature demonstrates Indigenous peoples do not receive health services that measure up to national standards in large part due to a marked lack of academic and employer preparation for nurses operating in transcultural settings. Inequities were apparent in recurrent reports of victim-blaming, deficient clinical communication with patients, clinical malpractice, devaluation of hypertension as a problem for Indigenous peoples, insufficient intercultural training for nurses, and discrimination against Indigenous students in nursing education programs. This article presents field research-based reflections on the socio-cultural contexts of religious healing practices in Brazilian folk Catholicism performed by traditional local blessing-givers (bendezeiras). Recognizing both illness and healing as socio-cultural processes and religion as an important key to understanding Brazilian culture and society, I concentrate on depicting important characteristics of the benzedeiras' practice, concentrating on "lights" (positive aspects) and "shadows" - adverse factors limiting the possibilities of intergenerational transmission in spite of the continuing popularity and symbolic effectiveness of benzedeiras' religious healing in Brazil. In 2006, Brazil approved a groundbreaking policy aimed at reducing significant racial health inequalities among its citizens. Like health disparities programs in the United States, Brazil's policy is based on the assumptions that racial identity and racism are important health determinants and that citizens who identify as 'black' suffer disproportionately from a number of health problems. How do these assumptions compare to Brazilian citizens' conceptions of racial identity and health inequalities? To address this question, I present ethnographic data from two years of fieldwork in Brazilian public clinics and low-income neighborhoods. I show that a majority of research participants made no connection between race and better or worse health. Of those who perceived health inequalities by race, most believed that white Brazilians had more health problems than black or brown Brazilians. Finally, I consider the implications of these ethnographic findings for Brazil's health disparities campaign. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article traces the development of anthropological research on health in Brazil in light of discussions on modernity/coloniality and world anthropologies. Originating in the 1970s, stimulated by external and internal pressures for scientific production and along with the expansion of graduate programs, a network of anthropologists has consolidated and multiplied in Brazil. We describe the development of research groups, meetings, and publications in order to characterize Brazilian anthropology of health as a research program that distinguishes itself from North Atlantic medical anthropology. We examine the visibility and circulation of references in academic publications to explore the participation of Brazilians in the global discourse and, more specifically, in the North-South dialogue. From a comparative perspective, we argue that anthropological investigations of health reflect a perspective and ethos distinctive to Brazil and its historical and political processes. RESUMEN Este artículo ofrece un nuevo punto de vista sobre los nuevos tipos de intermediarios aparecidos en las comunidades indígenas amazónicas, mostrando cómo las nuevas relaciones interétnicas han cambiado la realidad de estas comunidades. El texto presenta un estudio sobre los Manchineris de la Amazonía brasileña. Estos agentes llevan a cabo la producción de igualdad y relatividad dentro de los espacios sociales donde se requiere esta negociación. En la comunidad Manchineri nuevos papeles sociales causan una creciente separación entre distintas generaciones, entre géneros así como entre zonas urbanas y rurales. Sin embargo, la producción de nuevas perspectivas humanas con los no-indígenas es necesaria para poder interactuar en la actual sociocosmología amazónica interétnica. La lógica social de los pueblos amazónicos indígenas condiciona el cómo estos papeles sociales con habilidades interétnicas específicas son temporalmente adoptados y crea nuevas maneras de vencer las distancias sociales, económicas y políticas en expansión. This article attempts to provide fresh insight into the new kinds of intermediaries found in Amazonian native communities, showing how interethnic relations have changed today's native communities. The text presents a case study of the Manchineri people living in Brazilian Amazonia, focusing in particular on their spokespeople in rural and urban areas. These intermediaries work to produce equality and relatedness within the new social spaces where negotiations are required. Producing new human perspectives with non-natives is necessary in order to interact in the contemporary Amazonian interethnic sociocosmologies. However, in the Manchineri community, new social roles have caused widening generational, urban–rural and gender gaps. The social logic of Amazonian native peoples limits the ways in which specific social roles with special interethnic skills are temporarily adopted, and produces new ways to overcome deepening social, political, and economic distances. Depression has important cultural and social components. Interviews with 16 women living in the poor and violent outskirts of São Paulo were analyzed to identify local concepts of depression. The interviews were conducted with women who were diagnosed with depression and patients in treatment at a primary care unit. For these women, depression was inextricably woven into their violent and downtrodden daily lives, as well as with other sources of suffering. The local community identified two types of depression: 'true' and 'false,' suggesting a concept enmeshed with morality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the conflict between local knowledges and global knowledges in the specific case of indigenous literacy in northwestern Brazil, where global knowledges are represented by the "ideological" (Street, 1984) theories of literacy and "utilitarian" models of writing (Scollon & Scollon, 1995), and local knowledges are represented by the multimodal texts produced by the Kashinawá indigenous community. Whereas "ideological" theories of literacy purport to take into account local knowledges and practices, they are in this case incapable of understanding indigenous multimodality due to what I call a graphocentric habitus. I read this as an indication of the extent to which prevailing literacy theories are not sufficiently aware of their localness; this may be due to their insertion within the colonial difference (Mignolo, 2000) power and knowledge collusion, which tends to "universalize" dominant knowledges and subaltemize local knowledges.
