Brazil is a developing country that has undergone important changes at the social, economic, scientific and educational levels. A main policy challenge at present is related to the unequal distribution of vital resources, including technology. In the educational context, many changes have been observed, such as a decrease in analphabetism and an increase in the number of physicians, lawyers, and scientists. In this paper we will describe the educational experience involving the use of information technology, especially computers, at Brazilian primary and secondary schools. We live in a technological era in which it is important to educate our children to be aware of the impact of technology on society and the environment in general, as well as how to personally deal with them. From home to workplace, digital technological tools have become a part of day-to-day life. Digital technology has become essential in everyday life, and demands have been placed on schools to educate students so as to make them "technologically literate". Millions of Reals (R$) have been invested by the Brazilian government to equip schools with computers and communication tools, but low technological literacy remains a serious challenge. To address this problem, it is crucial to elucidate the real advantages and disadvantages of the use of computers in the educational system. (Contains 4 figures.)

The liver fluke Fasciola hepatica (Trematoda: Fasciolidae) causes fascioliasis, which affects mostly domestic ruminants and humans worldwide. This parasite has an Old World origin and was introduced into the New World by European colonizers. Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is the largest living rodent species, with adults weighing over 60 kg. We report a fascioliasis outbreak caused by F. hepatica that reduced a capybara group from 21 to 2 animals within a 9-mo period. Animal infection and associated lesions were confirmed by postmortem examinations that revealed extensive liver damage associated with the presence of large number of adult and immature forms of F. hepatica. Both macroscopic and microscopic alterations in the liver were compatible with acute fascioliasis, which is characterized by a large parasite burden in the liver. Taxonomic identification of flukes collected from capybara livers were confirmed by molecular methods, which generated a mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase I (NDI) gene partial sequence that was 100% identical to a F. hepatica NDI sequence from the United Kingdom. This is the first report of deleterious effects caused by F. hepatica in capybaras, highlighting the potential harm caused by this exotic parasite in the capybara. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The construction of a large reservoir on the Parana River (Selviria, MS, Brazil) disturbed the soil of an extensive agricultural area in which between 5 and 8 m of topsoil were removed. In this area, a restoration process was carried out using revegetation with green manure without or with amendments (for 4 years), crops (2 years), and Brachiaria decumbens cultivation for 6 years. The following treatments were used: control plots, T0 (residual subsoil) and T1 (soil tillage without culture); plots with green manure and without amendments: T2 (velvet bean) and T3 (pigeon pea); plots with green manure and with amendments: T4 (limed + velvet bean), T5 (limed + pigeon pea); T6 (limed + gypsum + velvet bean) and T7 (limed + gypsum + pigeon-pea). They were arranged in randomized blocks. After 13 years of rehabilitation process, when the soil was cultivated with brachiaria, the structural stability in three depths was evaluated. Organic-matter content and others chemical properties did not show any relationship with the stability of aggregates of the experimental area as measured by mean weight diameter (MWD). Significant differences between depths were found for MWD and the other parameters measured. Nevertheless, there were no significant differences observed between treatments, independent of the adopted system of revegetation. By taking an absolute value of MWD, the stability of superficial layer was observed in the following sequence: T7 > T5 > T6 > T1 > T2 > T3 > T4 > T0. The control plot (T0) gave the lowest value of MWD (1.76 mm) in relation to the plots in restoration process. Treatment T7 was the most effective in recovering the stability of aggregates (2.63 mm). However, treatments T5 and T6 displayed a similar value. After 13 years of revegetation practices, a slight recovery of the stability was observed, although this is still lower than stability in soils of similar edaphic conditions in the original topsoil of experimental area. Background/objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dietary patterns and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.Subjects/methods: This cross-sectional study included 156 postmenopausal and osteoporotic Brazilian women aged over 45 years. BMD of lumbar spine, total femur (TF), femoral neck and of total body (TB), as well as body composition (fat and lean mass), was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Body mass index and lifestyle information were also obtained. Dietary intake was assessed by using a 3-day food diary. Dietary patterns were obtained by principal component factor analysis. Adjusted multiple linear regression analysis was applied in order to evaluate the predictive effect of dietary patterns on BMD. Significance was set at P<0.05.Results: Five patterns were retained: 'healthy', 'red meat and refined cereals', 'low-fat dairy', 'sweet foods, coffee and tea' and 'Western'. The 'sweet foods, coffee and tea' pattern was inversely associated with TF BMD (β=-0.178; 95% CI: -0.039 to -0.000) and with TB BMD (β=-0.320; 95% CI: -0.059 to -0.017) even after adjusting for energy and calcium intake, lean mass, age and postmenopausal time.Conclusions: A concomitant excessive consumption of sweet foods and caffeinated beverages appears to exert a negative effect on BMD even when the skeleton already presents some demineralization. Food and beverage intake is a modifiable factor that should not be neglected in the treatment of individuals with osteoporosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: We investigated vitamin D status in Brazilian cities located at different latitudes. Insufficiency (<50 nmol/L) was common (17 %), even in those living in a tropical climate. Vitamin D insufficiency increased as a function of latitude. Mean 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels in each site and latitude correlation were very high ( r = −0.88; p < 0.0001). Introduction: Inadequate vitamin D, determined by low levels of 25(OH)D, has become very common despite the availability of sunlight at some latitudes. National data from a country that spans a wide range of latitudes would help to determine to what extent latitude or other factors are responsible for vitamin D deficiency. We investigated vitamin D status in cities located at different latitudes in Brazil, a large continental country. Methods: The source is the Brazilian database from the Generations Trial (1,933 osteopenic or osteoporotic postmenopausal women (60 to 85 years old) with 25(OH)D measurements). 25(OH)D below 25 nmol/L (10 ng/mL) was an exclusion criterion. Baseline values were between fall and winter. The sites included Recife, Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Curitiba, and Porto Alegre. Mean and standard deviation of 25(OH)D, age, spine and femoral neck T-score, calcium, creatinine, and alkaline phosphatase were calculated for each city. Pearson correlation was used for 25(OH)D and latitude. Results: Insufficiency (<50 or <20 ng/mL) was common (329 subjects, 17 %). Vitamin D insufficiency increased as a function of latitude, reaching 24.5 % in the southernmost city, Porto Alegre. The correlation between mean 25(OH)D levels in each site and latitude was very high ( r = −0.88, p < 0.0001). Conclusion: There is a high percentage of individuals with vitamin D insufficiency in Brazil, even in cities near the equator, and this percentage progressively increases with more southern latitudes. Listed as a global epidemic obesity is being treated through bariatric surgery, that is a more invasive method, however, considered the most efficient. Thus, this study aimed to investigate socio-cultural aspects and their impact on body image of women who underwent bariatric surgery in pre and postsurgery periods. We interviewed 20 women who underwent gastroplasty for at least one year in the Service Control Hypertension Diabetes and Obesity (SCHDO). Data were analyzed from a qualitative perspective and submitted to Content Analysis. The interaction between body image and socio-cultural context were configured in the follow categories: discrimination, perception of other's gaze before and after surgery, and own body´s perception before and after surgery. It was found that body image was drawn from the environment that the research group had lived. The external environment has provided to the subjects some feelings such as body inadequacy, sadness, social exclusion and inferiority, resulting in a negative self-concept. These feelings were minimized after bariatric surgery, providing to the group a positive self-concept, due to a greater social inclusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After 22 yr of the low-level liquid scintillation counting 14C laboratory at the Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture (CENA) at São Paulo University (USP), Piracicaba, Brazil, and several collaborative projects with Brazilian and international researchers from distinct scientific areas, the first 14C accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) laboratory in Latin America was installed at the Physics Institute of the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), Niterói, Brazil. A 250kV single stage accelerator produced by National Electrostatics Corporation began its operation in 2012. In this work, we compare measurements performed at the AMS Radiocarbon Laboratory at UFF (LAC-UFF) with those performed at CENA and the University of Georgia (UGAMS), Georgia, USA. Introduction: At the same time that there are increased demands we have become more sedentary, increasing risk factors for new diseases. All this reflects on our quality of life with special emphasis upon a particular syndrome called Burnout. Aviation is no exception and packed into its processes each day more expeditious, promotes a perfect environment for the development and spread of the syndrome. Aim: To evaluate the quality of life, organizational climate, and the level of physical activity among employees of a Brazilian airline. Methods: A cross-sectional design was conducted with 8 subjects. Results: Total score on the WHOQOL quality of life questionnaire was 64.7 (SD 10.8), and the environmental field showed the lowest score. Nevertheless, the sedentary risk factor was performed in 25% of the sample. About the organizational climate, it can be seen that 6.12% of the sample was framed in 'Professional Exhaustive', 29.60% in the condition of 'Warning', and 64.37% in the condition of 'Professional Efficiency'. Conclusion: the study found a low quality of life, especially in the environmental category, sedentary people and a large proportion of employees in this Brazilian airline with negative scores on the Organizational Climate. The objective of this study was to identify larvae species composition, distribution and abundance of carangids along the Brazilian coastal shelf area in order to provide background information on the reproductive community patterns. All carangid larvae used in this study are from the larval fish collection of the Zooplankton and Ichthyoplankton Integrated Laboratory of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - Brazil (DZUFRJ). Carangid larvae were collected in 13 surveys (nine in the dry season and four during the rainy season) between 1998 and 2008, from Bahia (12°S) to Rio de Janeiro (23°S), comprising 158 sampling stations (45 coastal; 98 oceanic; 15 over seamounts). A bongo net with 330 and 500-μm mesh size was towed at a speed of about two knots, obliquely (surface-bottom-surface) from a maximum depth of 200 m. Samples were collected both during the day and at night and combined in the analysis. A total of 1321 carangid larvae were identified representing 14 species: Decapterus punctatus (56.7%), Chloroscombrus chrysurus (16.8%), Caranx crysos (8.4%), Selar crumenophthalmus (6.3%), Trachurus lathami (6.3%), Caranx latus (2.4%), Carangoides bartholomaei (1.3%) , Oligoplites spp. (0.6%), Pseudocaranx dentex (0.3%) , Seriola dumerili (0.2%) , Elagatis bipinnulata (0.2%) , Selene setapinnis (0.2%) , Trachinotus carolinus (0.2%) and Selene vomer (0.1%). There was no significant difference in carangid density (P = 0.17) or in species composition (P = 0.09) among the coastal, oceanic and seamount stations. Although there was a significant difference in larval densities between the dry and rainy periods (P = 0.000264), the community composition did not vary significantly (P = 0.47). Therefore, seasonality (rainy and dry periods) seems to be the main factor affecting carangid densities although the community composition is not influenced by sampling periods or by the gradient coast-ocean. One of the concerns in the studies of adhesion lies in the investigation of the motives that justify continuation in physical exercise programs. The goal of this study was to identify motives influencing the continuation of adolescents, adults and the elderly in physical education programs offered by the Centers of Activity of Serviço Social do Comércio do Distrito Federal do Brasil. A representative and random sample of 986 individuals (between 15 and 89 years of age) answered a data collection instrument designed to investigate socio-demographic aspects and motives for permanence in the aforementioned program. Results showed personal wellbeing (91.9%) as the major reason for keeping up on practicing followed by prevention of illnesses (82.8%), physical conditioning (80.7%), empathy with the teacher (79.2%), program methodology (75.2%), and entertainment (73.9%). Context: Loss-of-function mutations of the kisspeptin-1 receptor gene, KISS1R, have been identified in patients with normosmic isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (nIHH). Objective: To investigate KISS1R defects in patients with absent or delayed puberty. Patients: We investigated KISS1R gene defects in a cohort of 99 Brazilian patients with nIHH or constitutional delay of puberty (CDP). Methods: The entire coding region of KISS1R was amplified by PCR followed by automatic sequencing. In addition, screening for KISS1R exonic deletions was performed by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification. Results: One novel homozygous KISS1R mutation was identified in two siblings with nIHH. This variant was an insertion/deletion (indel) mutation characterized by the deletion of three nucleotides (GCA) at position --2 to --4, and by the insertion of seven nucleotides (ACCGGCT) at the same position, within the 3' splice acceptor site of intron 2 of KISS1R. The brothers who carried this KISS1R mutation had no clinical evidence of pubertal development at the ages of 14 and 20 years. Computational analysis of this indel mutation predicted the generation of an abnormal protein. In addition, a new heterozygous KISS1R variant (p.E252Q) was identified in a male patient with sporadic nIHH. However, in vitro studies of this variant did not demonstrate functional impairment. Only known polymorphisms were identified in patients with CDP. Conclusion: Loss-of-function mutations of KISS1R represents a rare cause of nIHH, and was absent in patients with CDP. Abstract: The occurrence of Salmonella spp. on persimmon (Diospyrus kaki) surface of ‘Fuyu’ and ‘Rama Forte’ was evaluated during a 5-month-period (from April to August) of two season periods (years 2005 and 2006). The fruits were collected in wholesale (CEAGESP) and street markets in Sao Paulo and Campinas City, Brazil. A total of 582 fruits were analyzed using the BAX® system, which is based on the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The ability of this pathogen to grow on the peel and pulp of the two persimmon varieties was also verified at different incubation periods at temperatures of 10, 20 and 30°C. The growth parameters were obtained by modeling the experimental data using the Gompertz function. The presence of Salmonella spp. was evidenced in 5 of the 582 analyzed fruits (0.9% incidence). The growth studies showed that Salmonella enteritidis can grow on the peel as well as in the pulp of the two persimmon varieties studied incubated at 10, 20 and 30°C and that low temperatures can reduce the generation rate but do not inhibit its growth. There are still only a few studies related to Bregmacerotidae larvae in Brazil, although these larvae are frequently collected in oceanic ichthyoplankton samples. Thus this study analyzes the occurrence and abundance of Bregmaceros larvae along the Brazilian central coast and describes larval characteristics. During three oceanographic cruises samples were collected between the Real River (12°S) and the São Tomé Cape (22°S). Oblique hauls were conducted from a maximum depth of 200 m, using bongo nets of 330- and 500- μm mesh size. Among the 951 bregmacerotids collected, three species were identified corresponding to 89% Bregmaceros atlanticus, 8% Bregmaceros cantori and 3% Bregmaceros n. sp. B. atlanticus was widely distributed along the study area and was more frequent in stations situated beyond the 200-m isobath; this species was more abundant during the winter, showing a peak of density between Vitória and the São Tomé Cape (355 larvae per 10 m2). Bregmaceros cantori densities were very similar during the three cruises; the highest value (25.6 larvae per 10 m2) was recorded during the winter and higher concentrations were observed in neritic stations along the 200-m isobath. Bregmaceros n. sp. was rare in collections made during the three cruises; it was concentrated along the Bahia coast (12–18°S), and was more frequent in stations situated in the oceanic region. Bregmaceros atlanticus varying from 2.0 to 6.0 mm and Bregmaceros n. sp. larvae varying from 3.0 to 6.0 mm were present in all cruises, indicating that they spawn year-round. Bregmaceros cantori did not show a distribution pattern among the different length classes, probably associated with the fact that this species has a coastal distribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The Parakaña is a group of Indians with cultural similarities to the extinct Tupi group. They are an isolated native population from East Brazilian Amazon. A number of different O alleles have been found at the blood group ABO locus in populations of several ethnic origins (Caucasians, Blacks, Amerindians). Aim: The present study describes the ABO blood group polymorphism gene of the Parakanã Indians. The Amerindian group was carefully selected for racial background. Subject and methods: The blood group polymorphism was analysed in genomic DNA from 62 Parakanã Indians. We determined the 261G deletion, the T646A and C771T mutations described in O[sup 1variant] and the G542A substitution, using PCR-RFLP (polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism). Results: All Amerindians studied were homozygous for the 261G deletion. The frequencies of the T646A and C771T mutations in Parakanãs (0.65) were lower than that observed in Kayapo, Yanomama and Arara Indians (0.91) (χ² = 18.24; p-v < 0.001. The G542A substitution in Parakanãs was also lower (0.22) than in other tribes (0.42) (χ² = 9.73; p-v = 0.001). Conclusions: The different O alleles including the G542A mutation are not distributed homogeneously among all Amazonian Amerindians. Our results are in agreement with other genetic markers studied previously in Parakanã Indians, whose distinct genetic pattern differs from Europeans and even from other Amerindians. A correction to the article "Correlation between 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and latitude in Brazilian postmenopausal women: from the Arzoxifene Generations Trial," published online on June 8, 2013 in the journal, is presented.

The article analyzes the composition of hydroalcoholic extract of Lychnophora pinaster, a medicinal plant found in Brazil. Dry hydroalcoholic extract was partitioned in a triphasic mixture of hexane-acetonitrile and the aqueous layer was fractionated by silica gel. Four compounds have been isolated from the plant for the first time.

In a previous study, the authors found that the main determinant of hospital admissions in Brazil was health needs and that poor people had more chance of being admitted, controlling for health needs. The objective of the present study was to extend this previous model to incorporate information about health services supply. This was done using hierarchical models, using the person as the first level and the state of residence as the second level. Two models were adjusted for each group: the first using logistic regression and the second using Poisson regression. Only 1-3% of the variability in hospital admission utilization could be attributed to health supply differences at the state level.

The detailed characterization of household waste in the city of Uberlandia, Central Brazil, reveals the presence of 72 weight percent biodegradable organic matter. For the first time, this research contributes data on Uberlandia to national statistics. A new concept of reporting household waste composition was employed. The effect of informalcollection was considered. A better estimate of the true generation rate of household waste in this country resulted. Technical and administrative shortcomings of the present models for household waste management were identified. In order to correct them, the philosophy of divided collection was developed, and the corresponding management model is detailed. The model was applied to a test community. Experiments were conducted with behavior management of people and with collection and sorting of waste. The model was deemed functional. It opens the prospect of diverting 84% of waste from landfill. This paper presents the Quaternary cingulates collected from two limestone caves in Aurora do Tocantins, northern Brazil. Osteoderms of Euphractus sexcinctus , Dasypus novemcinctus , Propraopus sulcatus , and Pachyarmaterium brasiliense were retrieved, representing an expansion on the known distribution of the taxa. The specimens are described herein, and their geographic and chronologic distributions in Brazil are reviewed. Numerical dates allied to the presence of biostratigraphically relevant taxa indicate a Late Pleistocene–middle Holocene age. Considering that E . sexcinctus and D . novemcinctus occupy the area nowadays, why did part of the past cingulate community survive and the other part became extinct? We believe that their distribution was affected by paleoclimatic shifts, especially during glacial/interglacial cycles. The colder and arid climate of the Pleistocene glacial periods favored the development of open forests and savannas in Brazil, whereas grasslands and steppes were predominant in higher latitudes. Probably, Propraopus and Pachyarmatherium (from south and north, respectively) took refuge in lower latitudes, including in Brazil. Later, during the interglacial cycle, warm and moist climates favored the development of an evergreen forest in central Brazil, leading Propraopus and Pachyarmatherium to extinction and positively selecting E . sexcinctus and D . novemcinctus . Objective: To estimate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and severe deficiency in children and adolescents, in a large Brazilian sample., Methodology: Results of 413,988 25(OH)D measurements in children and adolescents aged 0 to 18 years collected between 01/2014 and 10/2018 were obtained from the database of a Clinical Laboratory. In this population, 25 hydroxyvitamin D concentrations below 20 ng/mL are considered deficient, and below 12 ng/mL as severe deficiency. All measurements were performed by immunoassay and the results were distributed by gender, age group, seasonality, and latitude., Results: The mean of 25(OH)D levels was 29.2 ng/mL with a standard deviation of 9.2 ng/mL. Of the total samples, 0.8% had a concentration < 12 ng/mL, and 12.5% of the samples had a concentration < 20 ng/mL, with a higher prevalence in females. Children under 2 years of age had the lowest prevalence. The effects of latitude and seasonality were quite evident. In samples of female adolescents from the southern region in winter, 36% of vitamin D deficiency and 5% of severe deficiency were found., Conclusion: In this large number of measurements of 25(OH)D in children and adolescents, 12.5% had a deficiency and 0.8% had severe deficiency. In this study, we evaluated the quality of life (QoL) and associated factors of community health workers (CHWs) in different urban settings as a contributor to the preparedness of Brazilian primary care for future sanitary emergencies. The sample included 1935 CHWs from 4 state capitals and 4 inland municipalities in northeastern Brazil. Information was collected on QoL (WHOQOL-BREF), work routines, sociodemographics, direct and indirect exposure to violence, general self-efficacy, social support (MSPSS), mental health (SRQ-20) and coronavirus anxiety. The data were subjected to multiple linear regression analysis (α = 5%). In the state capitals, the factors associated with loss of QoL were poor mental health, lack of training, uncertainty about occupational biosafety, and lack of adaptation of services to tend to patients diagnosed with COVID-19. Among the inland municipalities, the main factors were coronavirus anxiety, poor mental health, lack of adaptation of services, lack of training, and lack of personal protective equipment (PPE). A high MSPSS (family and friends) score and self-efficacy had positive impacts on QoL in both urban settings. Fracture probabilities derived from the original FRAX model for Brazil were compared to those from an updated model based on more recent regional estimates of the incidence of hip fracture. Fracture probabilities were consistently lower in the updated FRAX model. Despite large differences between models, differences in the rank order of fracture probabilities were minimal., Objective: Recent epidemiological data indicate that the risk of hip fracture in Brazil is lower than that used to create the original FRAX model. This paper describes the epidemiology of hip fracture in Brazil and the synthesis of an updated FRAX model with the aim of comparing this new model with the original model., Methods: Hip fracture rates from three cities in three regions were combined, weighted by the population of each region. For other major fractures, incidence rates for Brazil were estimated using Swedish ratios for hip to other major osteoporotic fracture (humerus, forearm or clinical vertebral fractures). Mortality estimates were taken from the UN., Results: Compared to the original FRAX model, the updated model gave lower 10-year fracture probabilities in men and women at all ages. Notwithstanding, there was a very close correlation in fracture probabilities between the original and updated models (r > 0.99) so that the revisions had little impact on the rank order of risk., Conclusion: The disparities between the original and updated FRAX models indicate the importance of updating country-specific FRAX models with the advent of significant changes in fracture epidemiology., (© 2023. We aim to refute the claims that we consider unsubstantiated and disconnected from reality, while reiterating the risks posed by authoritarian and antidemocratic far-right governments, such as Bolsonarism in Brazil, to the sustainability and resilience of universal health systems. This political threat is gaining momentum across several countries worldwide, thereby endangering the Democratic Rule of Law, institutions, and social policies. Despite the considerable morbidity and mortality of yellow fever virus (YFV) infections in Brazil, our understanding of disease outbreaks is hampered by limited viral genomic data. Here, through a combination of phylogenetic and epidemiological models, we reconstructed the recent transmission history of YFV within different epidemic seasons in Brazil. A suitability index based on the highly domesticated Aedes aegypti was able to capture the seasonality of reported human infections. Spatial modeling revealed spatial hotspots with both past reporting and low vaccination coverage, which coincided with many of the largest urban centers in the Southeast. Phylodynamic analysis unraveled the circulation of three distinct lineages and provided proof of the directionality of a known spatial corridor that connects the endemic North with the extra-Amazonian basin. This study illustrates that genomics linked with eco-epidemiology can provide new insights into the landscape of YFV transmission, augmenting traditional approaches to infectious disease surveillance and control.

Purpose: The present study aims to evaluate the serum concentrations of 25 hydroxyvitamin D[25(OH)D] in individuals aged ≥80 years, independent, free-living in Sao Paulo, Brazil (Lat 23.5  o S), and to investigate their associations with musculoskeletal system, physical performance and health markers., Method: This cross-sectional study included 212 community dwellers aged ≥80 years and evaluated serum 25(OH)D, PTH, calcium, albumin, phosphorus, creatinine, bone markers, and bone mineral density. Physical performance was evaluated with stationary march, Flamingo, and functional reach tests, questionnaires to assess falls and fractures in the previous year, energy expenditure (MET), and Charlson index. Physical activity was evaluated with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire., Results: Vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/mL) was observed in 56% and severe vitamin D deficiency (<10 ng/mL) in 13% of those individuals. Serum concentrations of 25(OH)D were significantly and positively associated with BMD total hip (p = 0.001), femoral neck (p = 0.011) and 33% radius (p = 0.046) BMDs, MET (p = 0.03) and functional reach test (p = 0.037) and negatively with age (p = 0.021), PTH (p = 0.004) and osteoporosis diagnosis (p = 0.012). Long-lived individuals with 25(OH)D ≥ 20 ng/mL had higher total hip and femoral neck BMDs (p = 0.012 and p = 0.014, respectively) and lower PTH (p = 0.030). In multiple linear regression analysis, age and osteoporosis diagnosis remained negatively associated with 25(OH)D levels (p = 0.021 and p = 0.001, respectively), while corrected calcium and cholecalciferol use remained positively associated (p = 0.001 and p = 0.024, respectively)., Conclusion: We observed high vitamin D inadequacy prevalence in those Brazilian community dwellers' oldest old. Serum concentrations of 25(OH)D were positively associated with bone mass and dynamic balance, and negatively with PTH and osteoporosis diagnosis. Brazil is one of the world leaders in the agribusiness sector tending to directly influence a growing dependence on imported inputs, specifically synthetic agrochemicals. At the state level, in 2013, Tocantins stood out in first place in the ranking of agrochemical consumers, however, these products can cause several problems, such as poisoning to humans, environmental contamination, and increased resistance to phytopathogens. Biological control is an alternative to the use of agrochemicals towards eliminating pests naturally by using living organisms called Biological Control Agents (BCA). Currently, fungi of the Trichoderma genus are some of the most used organisms in biological pest control for their relevant characteristics that favor them in terms of survival in the environment, such as high capacity to adapt to ecological conditions, potential to colonize the rhizosphere of plants, mycoparasitism, production of volatile and non-volatile metabolites. In addition, it works on plant growth and productivity. In general, the use of Trichoderma favors the control of soil pathogens, such as Rhizoctonia, Pythium, Sclerotinia, and nematodes. Thus, this review aims to demonstrate the importance of using Trichoderma in biological control, as well as to present an overview and perspectives of research developed by respondents in the Brazilian Midwest region and Tocantins state.

Hip fracture incidence rates in three representative geographic areas in Brazil over a period of 2 years (2010-2012) were assessed for the first time. Estimated incidence rates varied regionally, and markedly differed from those previously reported. Thus, national guidelines as well as FRAX Brazil should be revised in light of this new data., Purpose: To determine the annual incidence of hip fractures in individuals aged 50 years and over, living in 3 cities located in different regions of the country. To investigate the age, gender, and regional differences in fracture rates. Based on the obtained data, to estimate the national incidence of hip fractures resulting from osteoporosis, in order to improve prevention strategies., Methods: Retrospective, observational study including all patients aged ≥ 50 years admitted in hospitals because of a hip fracture in three cities (Belem, Joinville, and Vitoria) from representative geographic areas in Brazil from 2010 to 2012. Data were obtained from medical records in those cities. We analyzed incidence rates (crude and age- and gender-standardized rates) for hip fractures., Results: There were 1025 (310 in men and 715 in women) hip fractures in the over 50-year-old merged population from the three cities. The crude incidence rate for hip fracture was 103.3/100,000 (95% confidence interval [CI = 97.0; 109.7), in men 77.4/100,000 (95% CI = 68.8; 86.0), and in women 125.2/100,000 (95% CI = 116.0; 134.4). Incidence standardized for age and gender was 105.9 cases per 100,000 persons per year (95% CI = 99.4; 112.4); 78.5 cases per 100,000 (95% CI = 69.8; 87.3) in men and 130.6 cases 100,000 in women (95% CI = 121.0, 140.2) per year. Belem, located in the equatorial region (latitude 1° 27' S), had significantly lower crude and age-adjusted incidence than Joinville (latitude 26° 18' S) and Vitoria (latitude 20° 19' S), which were no different from each other. The incidence of fractures increased exponentially with age, and women had about twice the risk of fractures than men., Conclusions: Hip fracture mainly affects elderly women and presents great variability in incidence between the different regions in Brazil. The incidence of hip fractures in Brazil differed markedly from that reported previously, so that national guidelines and the FRAX model for Brazil should be revised., (© 2022. Pesticides, which are associated with endocrine dysfunction, immunological dysregulation, and cancer, are widespread sources of drinking water contamination. The state of Paraná has a population of 11 million, is the second largest grain producer in Brazil and is a leading consumer of pesticides. In this study, we analyzed the extent of drinking water contamination from 11 proven, probable, or potentially carcinogenic pesticides (alachlor, aldrin-dieldrin, atrazine, chlordane, DDT-DDD-DDE, diuron, glyphosate-AMPA, lindane-γ-HCH, mancozeb-ETU, molinate, and trifluralin) in 127 grain-producing municipalities in the state of Paraná. Extensive contamination of drinking water was found, including legacy pesticides such as aldrin-dieldrin (mean 0.047 ppb), DDT-DDD-DDE (mean: 0.07), chlordane (mean: 0.181), and lindane-HCH (mean: 2.17). Most of the municipalities were significantly above the maximum limits for each one of the currently allowed pesticides (67% for alachlor, 9.44% for atrazine, 96.85% for diuron, 100% for glyphosate-AMPA, 80.31% for mancozeb-ETU, 91.33% for molinate, and 12.6% for trifluralin). Ninety-seven percent of municipalities presented a sum of all pesticides at levels significantly above (189.84 ppb) the European Union preconized limits (<0.5 ppb). Using the mean pesticide concentration in water (ppb), the exposed population for each municipality, and the benchmark cancer risk for pesticides, we estimated the minimum number of cancer cases attributable to pesticide-contaminated drinking water during the period (total of 542 cases). More than 80% were attributed to mancozeb-ETU and diuron. Glyphosate-AMPA and diuron-attributable cases strongly correlated with the total cancer cases in the same period (R = 0.8117 and 0.8138, respectively) as well as with breast cancer cases (R = 0.7695 and 0.7551, respectively). Water contamination was significantly correlated with the sum of the estimated cancer cases for all 11 pesticides detected in each city (R = 0.58 and p < 0.0001). These findings reveal extensive contamination of drinking water in the state of Paraná and suggest that contamination may increase the risk of cancer in this region., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Objective: To present an updated and evidence-based guideline for the use of dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to assess body composition in clinical practice., Materials and Methods: This Official Position was developed by the Scientific Committee of the Brazilian Association of Bone Assessment and Metabolism (Associação Brasileira de Avaliação Óssea e Osteometabolismo, ABRASSO) and experts in the field who were invited to contribute to the preparation of this document. The authors searched current databases for relevant publications in the area of body composition assessment. In this second part of the Official Position, the authors discuss the interpretation and reporting of body composition parameters assessed by DXA and the use of DXA for body composition evaluation in special situations, including evaluation of children, persons with HIV, and animals., Conclusion: This document offers recommendations for the use of DXA in body composition evaluation, including indications, interpretation, and applications, to serve as a guiding tool in clinical practice and research for health care professionals in Brazil., (© 2022. A new species belonging to the Hoplias malabaricus complex from the Amazon basin, Brazil, is described. The new species is characterized by 15-16 predorsal scales, 37-39 lateral-line scales, 5 scales from dorsal fin to lateral line, 38-39 vertebrae, iii-iv, 7-8 anal-fin rays, ii-iv, 12-15 caudal-fin rays, last vertical series of scales on the base of caudal-fin rays forming a straight line, 6-7 dark bands in anal fin and no distinctive dark bands or blotches on flanks. The new species is also distinguished from other congeners of the H. malabaricus species-group by means of landmark-based morphometrics and DNA Barcoding (Cytochrome c Oxidase I gene). Osteoporosis is a prevalent skeletal disorder in postmenopausal women. REMS represents a potential technology for osteoporosis diagnosis in clinical practice., Objective: To assess the accuracy of Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry (REMS) technology in diagnosing osteoporosis in comparison with dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) on a population of Brazilian women., Methods: A population of women age ranged between 30 and 80 was recruited at DXA Service of São Paulo School-Hospital, Brazil. They underwent REMS and DXA scans at the axial sites. The REMS accuracy for the osteoporosis diagnosis was evaluated in comparison with DXA on both sites. The intra-operator and inter-operator coefficient of variation (CV) was also calculated., Results: A total of 343 patients were enrolled in the study. Erroneous scans due to poor quality acquisitions with both methods or to other technical reasons were excluded; 227 lumbar spine exams and 238 hip exams were acceptable for comparison analysis. The comparison between REMS and DXA outcomes showed that the average difference in BMD (expressed as bias±1.96 SD) was -0.026±0.179g/cm 2 for the spine and -0.027±0.156g/cm 2 for the femoral neck. When accepted 0.3 tolerance on T-score, there were no cases diagnosed as osteoporosis by DXA that were defined as normal by REMS. The REMS intra-operator CV was 0.51% for the lumbar spine and 1.08% for the femoral neck. The REMS inter-operator CV was 1.43% for the lumbar spine and 1.93% for the femoral neck., Conclusion: The REMS approach had high accuracy for the diagnosis of osteoporosis in comparison with DXA in adult women. Objective: To investigate gender inequity in the scientific production of the University of Sao Paulo., Methods: Members of the University of Sao Paulo faculty are the study population. The Web of Science repository was the source of the publication metrics. We selected the measures: total publications and citations, average of citations per year and item, H-index, and history of citations between 1950 and 2019. We used the name of the faculty member as a proxy to the gender identity. We use descriptive statistics to characterize the metrics. We evaluated the scissors effect by selecting faculty members with a high H-index. The historical series of citations was projected until 2100. We carry out analyses for the general population and working time subgroups: less than 10 years, 10 to 20 years, and 20 years or more., Results: Of the 8,325 faculty members, we included 3,067 (36.8%). Among those included, 1,893 (61.7%) were male and 1,174 (38.28%) female. The male gender presented higher values in the publication metrics (average of articles: M = 67.0 versus F = 49.7; average of citations/year: M = 53.9 versus F = 35.9), and H-index (M = 14.5 versus F = 12.4). Among the 100 individuals with the highest H-index (≥ 37), 83% are male. The male curve grows faster in the historical series of citations, opening a difference between the groups whose separation is confirmed by the projection., Discussion: Scientific production at the Universidade de São Paulo is subject to a gender bias. Two-thirds of the faculty are male, and hiring over the past few decades perpetuates this pattern. The large majority of high impact faculty members are male., Conclusion: Our analysis suggests that the Universidade de São Paulo will not overcome gender inequality in scientific production without substantive affirmative action. Development does not happen by chance but through choices that are affirmative, decisive, and long-term oriented.

We explore the discontinuity in the allocation of the main federal grant to Brazilian municipalities to identify the local effects of health spending and the spillovers into the bordering jurisdictions. Fiscal reactions are asymmetric: small neighbors reduce health spending, while we do not find a significant budgetary response in the largest neighbor. Our results suggest a reduction in the spread of infectious diseases in the neighbors, with fewer residents hospitalized with gastrointestinal infections. In addition, the elderly demand less hospitalization in the largest bordering jurisdictions due to respiratory infectious diseases. Finally, we find a direct and significant reduction in infant mortality, consistent with the observed pediatricians' increase, while the spillover effects on neighbors' mortality rates are not conclusive., (© 2021 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Antiresorptive therapy is the main form of prevention of osteoporotic or fragility fractures. Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a relatively rare but severe adverse reaction to antiresorptive and antiangiogenic drugs. Physicians and dentists caring for patients taking these drugs and requiring invasive procedures face a difficult decision because of the potential risk of MRONJ. The aim of this study was to discuss the risk factors for the development of MRONJ and prevention of this complication in patients with osteoporosis taking antiresorptive drugs and requiring invasive dental treatment. For this goal, a task force with representatives from three professional associations was appointed to review the pertinent literature and discuss systemic and local risk factors, prevention of MRONJ in patients with osteoporosis, and management of established MRONJ. Although scarce evidence links the use of antiresorptive agents in the context of osteoporosis to the development of MRONJ, these agents are considered a risk factor for this complication. Despite the rare reports of MRONJ in patients with osteoporosis, the severity of symptoms and impact of MRONJ in the patients' quality of life make it imperative for health care professionals to consider this complication when planning invasive dental procedures.

This study evaluated the differences in vitamin D 3 synthesis in two different latitudes throughout 1 year using an in vitro model, which simulates cutaneous vitamin D photoproduction. Borosilicate ampoules containing 7-dehydrocholesterol (7-DHC) were exposed to sunlight hourly throughout the daylight hours, 1 day per month for a year, in Fortaleza (latitude 03° 43' 01" S-LAT3° S) and Sao Paulo (latitude 23° 32' 53" S-LAT23° S). Later, vitamin D 3 and photoisomers of 7-DHC (tachysterol and lumisterol) were measured by a high-performance liquid chromatography system (HPLC). Vitamin D synthesis weighted UV radiation (UVBVitD) and solar zenith angle (SZA) were calculated during the same periods for both latitudes. Vitamin D 3 synthesis occurred throughout the year in both locations, as expected in latitudes lower than 35°. Median of photoconversion to vitamin D 3 through the year was higher in LAT3°S [median (IQR): LAT 3°S 4.1% (6.0); LAT 23°S 2.9% (4.5); p value = 0.020]. Vitamin D 3 production strongly correlated with UV-B (LAT3° S, r = 0.917; p < 0.0001 and at LAT23° S, r = 0.879; p < 0.0001) and SZA (LAT3° S, r = - 0.924; p < 0.0001 and in LAT23°S, r = - 0.808; p < 0.0001). Vitamin D 3 production starts later in LAT23° S, especially in winter. Lowest percentages were observed in June in both cities, although, compared to LAT3° S, in LAT 23° S the conversion was over 50% lower in the winter period. Cloudiness impaired photoproduction of Vitamin D 3 even in summer months in both latitudes. Our results provide data to help guide medical recommendations for sensible sun exposure to promote the cutaneous production of vitamin D 3 at different latitudes, seasonality, time of day and cloudiness status in Brazil.

Hypovitaminosis D is a common condition with a negative impact on health. This statement, prepared by experts from the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism and the Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine, includes methodological aspects and limitations of the measurement of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] for identification of vitamin D status, and identifies individuals at increased risk for deficiency of this vitamin in whom 25(OH)D measurement is recommended. For the general population, 25(OH)D levels between 20 and 60 ng/mL are considered normal, while individuals with levels below 20 ng/mL are considered to be vitamin D deficient. This statement identifies potential benefits of maintaining 25(OH)D levels > 30 ng/mL in specific conditions, including patients aged > 65 years or pregnant, those with recurrent falls, fragility fractures, osteoporosis, secondary hyperparathyroidism, chronic kidney disease, or cancer, and individuals using drugs with the potential to affect the vitamin D metabolism. This statement also calls attention to the risk of vitamin D intoxication, a life-threatening condition that occurs at 25(OH)D levels above 100 ng/mL.

Introduction: Vertebral fractures (VF) are associated with poorer quality of life, morbidity, and mortality in aging, and are the main risk factors for new VF or fractures in other sites. Thus, to explore them in the elderly is important, especially considering the very elderly individuals (age ≥ 80), who belong to the fastest growing population in the world, a portion that is still very little studied., Objective: To evaluate the prevalence, specific characteristics and associations of VFs in a very elderly population., Method: Observational, descriptive, and analytical cross-sectional study of the "Longevous Project" - São Paulo, Brazil, an ongoing prospective cohort that includes elderly of both gender, aged 80 yr or more. For the diagnosis of VF 2 methods were used VFA ("VF Assessment) by bone densitometry and X-ray, by 2 independent physicians, and using the Genant semiquantitative technique. The VFs by VFA were correlated with demographic, anthropometric, clinical, laboratory, and densitometric data. Statistical tests applied were qui-square and ANOVA., Results: We analyzed data of 125 individuals with a mean age of 86.7 ± 4.1 yr and majority of female (71.2%). The prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia was 35.5% and 47.6%, respectively. A higher prevalence of VF was verified by VFA (30.4%) than by X-ray (20.8%), besides the majority was considered severe, 52.6% and 57.7%, by VFA and X-ray, respectively. A concordance index between the 2 methods was considered regular for the diagnosis of VF (Kappa = 0.419), and good for the VF severity (Kappa = 0.743). The VF were significantly associated to bone densitometry analysis VF (p = 0.05), and its severity was significantly correlated with total hip BMD (p = 0.049) and glomerular filtration rate (p = 0.017)., Conclusion: This study observed a high prevalence of VF in a very elderly population, being the great majority severe fractures and suggests that VFA might be more effective to detect VF in oldest-old individuals., (Copyright © 2019 The International Society for Clinical Densitometry. The systematics of the Humboldt's wooly monkeys ( L. lagothricha ; Atelidae) is essential to preserve this Neotropical primate species. Traditionally, four morphological subspecies have been described, which recently have been molecularly confirmed. However, no population genetics studies have been carried out throughout the geographical distribution of one of these subspecies, Lagothrix lagothricha poeppigii . For this reason, we analyzed nine mitochondrial genes of L. l. poeppigii mainly collected from the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Amazon in order to better understand the evolutionary history of this taxon. The mitochondrial genetic diversity levels (haplotype and nucleotide diversity) we estimated are likely the highest yet reported for L. lagothricha. Our results did not detect important genetic structure within L. l. poeppigii . Furthermore, our phylogenetic analyses did not detect any relevant molecular cluster in the area where Groves hypothesized the existence of L. poeppigii castelnaui . Therefore, based on these data, castelnaui is not a valid taxon from a molecular perspective. The most differentiated subpopulation within L. l. poeppigii was from Morona-Santiago province (Ecuador) and had a genetic distance of 0.8-1.2% relative to the other subpopulations studied. However, this genetic distance range is within the variability found within a population. We estimated the mitochondrial temporal diversification within L. l. poeppigii to have occurred during the Pleistocene, 1.8-1.2 million years ago. Similarly, all our analyses detected a strong Pleistocene female population expansion for this taxon. Diverse spatial genetic analyses, perhaps with the exception of Monmonier's Algorithm, did not detect differentiated taxa within the area analyzed for L. l. poeppigii . These genetics results could be of importance to conservation efforts to preserve this taxon as one unit.

17-Hydroxylase-deficiency (17OHD) is a rare form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The aim of the work was to study clinical, biochemical, and the follow up of 17OHD patients and evaluate the function and structure of CYP17A1 mutations. Brazilian patients (three 46, XX and four 46, XY; 17±1.9 years) with combined 17-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase deficiency were evaluated. CYP17A1 gene was sequenced. Functional analysis was performed transfecting COS7 cells, which were exposed to progesterone or 17α-hydroxypregnolone substrates. Hormones were determined by RIA or LC-MS/MS. Three-dimensional structural modeling was performed by Modeller software. All patients presented prepubertal female external genitalia, primary amenorrhea, hypergonadotrophic hypogonadism, hypokalemic hypertension, decreased cortisol, and increased ACTH and corticosterone levels. Five patients presented previously described mutations: p.W406R/p.W406R, IVS2-2A>C/p.P428L, and p.P428L/p.P428L. Two patients presented the compound heterozygous p.G478S/p.I223Nfs*10 mutations, whose CYP17A1 activity and the three dimensional structural modeling are originally studied in this paper. CYP17A1 activity of p.G478S was 13 and 58% against progesterone and 17-hydroxypregnenolone, respectively. The p.I223Nfs*10 caused a truncated inactive protein. Three-dimensional p.G478S structural modeling showed different internal hydrophobic interaction with W313 and created an additional chain side contact with L476 residue. Due to the rarity of 17OHD, the long term follow up (15.3±3.1 years) of our patients will help endocrinologists on the management of patients with 17OHD. The mutation p.G478S/pI223Nfs*10 led to severe 17OHD and impaired CYP17A1 structure and function. Corticotroph adenomas frequently harbor somatic USP8 mutations. These adenomas also commonly exhibit underexpression of P27, a cell cycle regulator. The present study aimed to determine the influence of USP8 mutations on clinical features of Cushing's disease and to elucidate the relationship between USP8 mutations and P27 underexpression in these tumors. Retrospective study with 32 patients with Cushing's disease was followed at the Ribeirao Preto Medical School University Hospital. We evaluated the patients' clinical data, the USP8 mutation status and the gene expression of cell cycle regulators P27/CDKN1B , CCNE1 , CCND1 , CDK2 , CDK4, and CDK6 in tumor tissue in addition to the protein expression of P27/CDKN1B . We observed somatic mutations in the exon 14 of USP8 in 31.3% of the patients. Larger tumor size was observed in patients harboring USP8 mutations (p=0.04), with similar rates of remission, age of presentation, salivary cortisol at 23:00 h and after 1 mg dexamethasone, ACTH levels, and early postoperative plasma cortisol. We observed no differences regarding the gene or protein expression of the cell cycle regulators according to USP8 mutation status. In this Brazilian series, the observed frequency of USP8 somatic mutations was similar to that reported in European ancestry populations. Although it was reasonable that USP8 mutations could contribute to cell cycle dysregulation and P27 underexpression in corticotroph adenomas, our data did not confirm this hypothesis. Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy is associated with a spectrum of developmental impairments known as congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). The prevalence of this syndrome varies across ZIKV endemic regions, suggesting that its occurrence could depend on cofactors. Here, we evaluate the relevance of protein malnutrition for the emergence of CZS. Epidemiological data from the ZIKV outbreak in the Americas suggest a relationship between undernutrition and cases of microcephaly. To experimentally examine this relationship, we use immunocompetent pregnant mice, which were subjected to protein malnutrition and infected with a Brazilian ZIKV strain. We found that the combination of protein restriction and ZIKV infection leads to severe alterations of placental structure and embryonic body growth, with offspring displaying a reduction in neurogenesis and postnatal brain size. RNA-seq analysis reveals gene expression deregulation required for brain development in infected low-protein progeny. Zika virus (ZIKV) was first discovered in 1947 in Uganda but was not considered a public health threat until 2007 when it found to be the source of epidemic activity in Asia. Epidemic activity spread to Brazil in 2014 and continued to spread throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Despite ZIKV being zoonotic in origin, information about transmission, or even exposure of non-human vertebrates and mosquitoes to ZIKV in the Americas, is lacking. Accordingly, from February 2017 to March 2018, we sought evidence of sylvatic ZIKV transmission by sampling whole blood from approximately 2000 domestic and wild vertebrates of over 100 species in West-Central Brazil within the active human ZIKV transmission area. In addition, we collected over 24,300 mosquitoes of at least 17 genera and 62 species. We screened whole blood samples and mosquito pools for ZIKV RNA using pan-flavivirus primers in a real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in a SYBR Green platform. Positives were confirmed using ZIKV-specific envelope gene real-time RT-PCR and nucleotide sequencing. Of the 2068 vertebrates tested, none were ZIKV positive. Of the 23,315 non-engorged mosquitoes consolidated into 1503 pools tested, 22 (1.5%) with full data available showed some degree of homology to insect-specific flaviviruses. To identify previous exposure to ZIKV, 1498 plasma samples representing 62 species of domestic and sylvatic vertebrates were tested for ZIKV-neutralizing antibodies by plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT 90 ). From these, 23 (1.5%) of seven species were seropositive for ZIKV and negative for dengue virus serotype 2, yellow fever virus, and West Nile virus, suggesting potential monotypic reaction for ZIKV. Results presented here suggest no active transmission of ZIKV in non-human vertebrate populations or in alternative vector candidates, but suggest that vertebrates around human populations have indeed been exposed to ZIKV in West-Central Brazil.

Snake bite envenomations in farm animals are generally overestimated as the cause of mortality in rural areas in Latin America. However, most cases are based only on anecdotal information and assumptions, and lack diagnostic evidence. There are few proven reports of envenomation and death in horses caused by snakebites from members of the Bothrops genus (lancehead pit vipers). This study presents epidemiological and clinical-pathological findings of fatal bothropic envenomation in horses from Central Western Brazil in order to contribute to the correct diagnosis of this condition. A survey of the records of equine necropsies from the Veterinary Pathology Laboratories of the University of Brasilia, Federal University of Mato Grosso and Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, from January 2010 to February 2018, was performed. Five fatal cases of bothropic snakebite were identified in 755 necropsies of horses, corresponding to 0.66% of these cases, ranging annually from 0.33% to 0.89%. The main necropsy findings were marked swelling and diffuse subcutaneous hemorrhage, and identification of the fang marks in 2 out of five horses. Hemorrhage in most organs and tissues was the pathological hallmark of systemic envenomation. Myonecrosis, dermonecrosis, and moderate to severe kidney degeneration and necrosis were also observed. Fatal Bothrops snakebites in horses have a low occurrence in Central Western Brazil and most cases occur in the rainy season. The diagnosis of this condition may be substantiated by clinical signs and pathological findings. Local hemorrhage and necrosis, systemic hemorrhagic disorders and injuries related to acute kidney injury are the predominant clinical signs. Sheehan's syndrome (SHS) is a rare condition related to the risk of osteoporosis and evaluation of bone texture imaging features on panoramic radiographs would be suitable for this condition, which was the aim of the present study. Fractal dimension, lacunarity, and trabecular morphologic aspects were significantly altered in these patients., Introduction: SHS is an important public health problem particularly in developing countries. It is characterized as postpartum hypopituitarism secondary to obstetric complications-related ischemic pituitary necrosis that shows significant systemic metabolic repercussions. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate bone texture parameters in digital panoramic radiographs of patients with SHS., Methods: A case-control study was conducted with 30 SHS patients from an Endocrinology and Diabetology Service of reference in Brazil, and 30 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. A custom computer program measured fractal dimension, lacunarity, and some morphologic features in the following mandibular regions of interest (50 × 50 pixels): below the mental foramen (F1), between the first and second molars (M1), and at the center of the mandibular ramus (R1)., Results: The fractal analysis showed a statistically significant difference between the studied groups in all regions of interest. The fractal dimension in F1 (p = 0.016), M1 (p = 0.043), and R1 (p = 0.028) was significantly lower in SHS group, as well as lacunarity in R1 (p = 0.008). Additionally, several morphologic features were statistically significant in the SHS group (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Therefore, individuals with SHS showed altered imaging texture parameters on panoramic radiographs, which reflect a smaller spatial organization of the bone trabeculae and, possibly, a state of reduced mineral bone density.

Introduction: Osteoporosis is a very common disease, and data on its epidemiology is important for health care strategy implementation. Brazil is a developing country; its population is aging, leading to an expected increase in hip fractures and their undesirable consequences., Objective: Assess the incidence of osteoporotic hip fractures and subsequent mortality in Southern Brazil as part of a large epidemiological study aiming to reinforce the data for FRAX Brazil., Study Design: This study evaluated all admissions for fragility hip fractures between April 1, 2010, and March 31, 2012, in the city of Joinville, including both genders of patients 50 years old or older, which corresponded to 19.2% of the local population. Joinville was chosen because it is the third largest city in the south of Brazil, with a representative population predominantly composed of descendants of European immigrants., Results: There were 213 cases of hip fractures, predominantly in Caucasians (n = 204, 96.7%) whose mean age was 77.7, ± 10.5, of which 143 (67.1%) were women (79.5 ± 9.6 years) and 70 (32.9%) were men (74 ± 11.3 years). The annual incidence of hip fractures was 268.8 for women and 153.0 for men/100,000 inhabitants. In the 60 to 64-year group, the overall incidence was 92.1/100,000, with an age-related increase of 1410.1/100,000 in the 80 to 84-year group. The mortality rate during hospitalization was 7.5%, and 25% died during the 12 months following their fractures., Conclusion: The incidence of hip fractures among the oldest in this predominantly Caucasian population living in Southern Brazil was similar to that of European populations from the northern hemisphere. The annual incidence of fragility hip fractures among people in their 80s was 59 times higher than that among people in their 50s. The mortality rate was 4.3 times higher in the first year after hip fracture than in the age-related local population.

International committees that have published nutrient requirements for dairy cattle have used data from mineral studies conducted in the 1920s to 1970s, and no study has reported data from animals less than 100 kg; therefore, there is a need to update mineral requirements for preweaned dairy calves. Thus, a meta-analysis was performed to estimate the mineral requirements of Ca, P, K, Mg, and Na for Holstein and Holstein × Gyr crossbred preweaned dairy calves using data from 5 studies developed at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (Viçosa, MG, Brazil). A total of 210 calves were separated into 2 breeds: purebred Holstein calves (animals with a Holstein pedigree higher than 87.5%) and Holstein × Gyr crossbred calves (animals with a Holstein pedigree lower than 87.5%). The comparative slaughter technique was used to estimate animal body composition and empty body weight (EBW). Mineral requirements for maintenance were estimated by the regression between retained mineral and mineral intake, whereas mineral requirements for gain were obtained from the first derivative of the mineral content in the animal's body. In addition, breed effect was tested on the intercept and slope of the models. The effect of breed was not observed for all analyzed variables. Thus, net requirements for maintenance were 12.73, 11.81, 20.28, 3.50, and 6.37 mg/kg of EBW per day for Ca, P, K, Mg, and Na, respectively. Retention coefficients were 73.18, 65.20, 13.16, 29.55, and 24.28% for Ca, P, K, Mg, and Na, respectively. The following equations were determined to estimate net requirements for gain (NRG, g/d): NRG for Ca = 14.402 × EBW -0.139 × empty body gain (EBG); NRG for P = 5.849 × EBW -0.027 × EBG; NRG for K = 1.140 × EBW -0.048 × EBG; NRG for Mg = 0.603 × EBW -0.036 × EBG; and NRG for Na = 1.508 × EBW -0.045 × EBG.
