Objective: To evaluate the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on the number of diagnoses of oral and maxillofacial lesions in public laboratories after one year of COVID‐19 outbreak in Brazil. Material and Methods: This is a cross‐sectional study. Biopsies submitted to histopathologic examination from March 2019 to February 2020 (pre‐pandemic period) and from April 2020 to March 2021 (pandemic period) in nine Brazilian public oral pathology laboratories were retrieved and the number of diagnoses, types of lesion, and percentage changes during both periods were analyzed. Results: There were 7389 diagnoses in the pre‐pandemic period and 2728 in the pandemic era, indicating a reduction of 63.08%. The reduction was 64.23% for benign lesions and 49.48% for malignant lesions, with a 50.64% reduction in squamous cell carcinoma. The largest decreases were observed in April 2020 and January 2021. Conclusion: An important reduction in the diagnoses of benign and malignant lesions was noted in the Brazilian public oral pathology laboratories during the first year of the COVID‐19 pandemic. We present the frequency of cases of isolated odontogenic keratocysts submitted to microscopic examination at 10 Brazilian referral centres in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. In a retrospective (1953–2017) analysis, data on clinicoradiographic features and treatment of these lesions were collected and analysed descriptively. Among the 258,867 cases retrieved, 2,497 (0.96%) were isolated odontogenic keratocysts. In summary, an overview of individuals affected with isolated odontogenic keratocysts is reported herein. The aims of the study were to examine the knowledge to occupational hazards from blood -borne viruses, and practices related to cross-infection control in Brazil, by a survey of 947 Brazilian dental practitioners at a National Dental Congress in January 1990. Over 80% were aware that hepatitis B virus can he present in the oral cavity and constitutes an occupational hazard but their perceptions as to the hazards from other agents were at variance with the published evidence. Over 75% were aware of the existence of vaccines against hepatitis B virus but less than 60% appreciated lie possible long-term hepatic sequelae of hepatitis B virus infection and, less than 40% were aware of the oncogenic potential, less than 10% had been immunized against hepatitis B and only a further 30% intended to be vaccinated. Autoclaves were used by less than 10% : most appeared to use chemical means for disinfection of dental instruments. These results indicate the urgent need for a campaign to improve infection control procedures in Brazilian dental practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the last decade, many studies in Europe and North America have evaluated oral conditions and dental needs in the elderly. Similar information does not exist in Brazil. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of oral health and disease in elderly persons living in all institution in the city of Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Of 350 elderly persons, 134 males and 136 females were interviewed and clinically examined. Less than one half had healthy mouths. 58.9% of the examined individuals showed one or more lesions in the oral mucosa, the most frequent being denture-induced stomatitis (20.0%). Fibrous hyperplasias (11.8%) and angular cheilitis (9.3%) were fairly common. Gender, use and degree of hygiene of the denture were factors statistically significantly contributing to prevalence of denture stomatitis. Precancerous lesions such as leukoplakia (3.0%), actinic cheilitis (2.6%) were uncommon but three cases of squamous carcinoma (1.1%) were revealed. Summary: The aim of this study was to analyse the clinical, histological and immunohistochemical prognostic factors of a large series of adenoid cystic carcinoma, using univariate and multivariate survival analyses. All cases of head and neck ACC (n =129) treated in a single institution in Brazil, between 1955 and 1997, were selected for the study. Univariate survival analysis revealed that age older than 45 years (p =0.04), period of complaints inferior to 18 months (p =0.007), presence of paresthesia (p =0.04), T stage (p =0.01), N stage (p =0.04), M stage (p <0.001), clinical stage (p =0.003), solid histological type (p <0.001), presence of residual tumor (p <0.001) and expression of p53 (p =0.08) correlated with a poor prognosis. In the multivariate survival analyses, clinical stage, solid histological subtype and increased expression of p53 were independent significant prognostic factors. According to our findings, clinical stage, solid growth pattern and expression of p53 were the most important prognostic factors in patients with ACC. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients' histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil's Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

Low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma (LGMS) represents an atypical tumor composed of myofibroblasts with a variety of histological patterns and with a high tendency to local recurrence and a low probability of distant metastases. LGMS has predilection for the head and neck regions, especially the oral cavity. This study aimed to report 13 new cases of LGMS arising in the oral and maxillofacial region. This study included LGMS cases from five oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories in four different countries (Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, and South Africa). Their clinical, radiographic, histopathological, and immunohistochemical findings were evaluated. In this current international case series, most patients were females with a mean age of 38.7 years, and commonly presenting a nodular lesion in maxilla. Microscopically, all cases showed a neoplasm formed by oval to spindle cells in a fibrous stroma with myxoid and dense areas, some atypical mitoses, and prominent nucleoli. The immunohistochemical panel showed positivity for smooth muscle actin (12 of 13 cases), HHF35 (2 of 4 cases), β-catenin (3 of 5 cases), desmin (3 of 11 cases), and Ki-67 (range from 5 to 50%). H-caldesmon was negative for all cases. The diagnosis of LGMS was confirmed in all cases. LGMS shows predominance in young adults, with a slight predilection for the female sex, and maxillary region. LGMS should be a differential diagnosis of myofibroblastic lesions that show a proliferation of spindle cells in a fibrous stroma with myxoid and dense areas and some atypical mitoses, supporting the diagnosis with a complementary immunohistochemical study. Complete surgical excision with clear margins is the treatment of choice. However, long-term follow-up information is required before definitive conclusions can be drawn regarding the incidence of recurrence and the possibility of metastasis., (© 2023. Objective: To report the clinicopathologic features of acquired oral syphilis cases in South American countries., Materials and Methods: Clinical data were retrospectively collected from the records of 18 oral diagnostic services in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Uruguay, and Peru. Serologies of nontreponemal and treponemal tests were used for diagnosis., Results: The series comprised 339 cases of acquired oral syphilis. Secondary syphilis ranked as the most common stage (86.7%). Lesions were more frequent among males (58.0%) and young adults with a mean age of 33.3 years. Individuals aged 20-29 years were most affected (35.3%). The most commonly involved sites were the tongue (31.6%), lip/labial commissure (25.1%), and hard/soft palate (20.4%). Clinically, acquired oral syphilis usually presented as mucous patches (28.4%), papules (25.7%), and ulcers (18.1%). Skin manifestations occurred in 67.7% of individuals, while lymphadenopathy and fever were observed in 61.3% and 11.6% of all subjects, respectively. Most patients were treated with the benzathine penicillin G antibiotic., Conclusion: This report validates the spread of acquired oral syphilis infection among young adults in South America. The oral lymphoepithelial cyst (OLC) is an uncommon lesion whose pathogenesis remains poorly understood. The aim of this study was to report the clinicopathologic features of the OLCs and to verify a possible association between OLCs and subgemmal neurogenous plaque (SNP) in the posterior lateral region of the tongue. A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. A total of 106,282 biopsy records of oral and maxillofacial lesions from six oral pathology services in Brazil were analyzed. All cases of OLCs were reviewed, and clinical and histopathological data were collected. Immunohistochemical reactions for S-100 protein were performed to confirm the diagnosis of SNP. Among all lesions, there were 132 (0.11%) cases of OLCs. The series comprised 83 females (62.9%) and 49 males (37.1%), with a 1.7:1 female-to-male ratio and a mean age of 45.8 ± 17.7 years. Most cases involved the tongue (n = 80; 62.0%) and presented clinically as asymptomatic papules or nodules with a yellow or whitish color. Microscopically, most of the cysts were entirely lined by parakeratinized stratified epithelium (n = 89; 67.4%) and filled with desquamated cells, keratin debris, amorphous eosinophilic material, and inflammatory cells in varying amounts. Connection with the epithelium of oral mucosa was observed in 18 cases (13.6%). SNP was found in 9/80 (11.2%) cases involving the tongue. The clinical and demographic features of OLCs were similar to those described in previous studies. Overall, this lesion has a predilection for the posterior region of the tongue of female adults. Objective: The aim of this study was to report the clinicopathologic features of 105 new cases of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) from Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico, and South Africa., Study Design: Clinical and radiographic data were collected from records of 5 oral pathology laboratories, and all cases were microscopically reviewed., Results: This series of cases included 36 (34.2%) from South Africa; 33 (31.4%) from Brazil; 23 (21.9%) from Mexico; and 13 (12.3%) from Guatemala. Seventy-two patients (68.5%) were females and 33 patients (31.4%) were males, with an average age of 19.2 years. The tumors predominantly affected the anterior maxilla (48.5%), followed by the anterior mandible (29.5%); posterior mandible (15.2%); and posterior maxilla (6.6%). Sixty-three tumors (63.6%) were follicular, 34 (34.3%) were extrafollicular, and 2 (2%) were peripheral. In most cases, the tumors caused considerable cortical expansion (average size 3.4 cm). Microscopically, most cases showed rosette-like and duct-like structures., Conclusions: This is one of the largest case series of AOTs reported in the literature and the first multicenter study involving populations from Latin America and South Africa. In a fifth of the present cases, the posterior regions of the gnathic bones were affected and the tumors demonstrated larger sizes compared with cases occurring in other populations., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Background: Lymphomas in the oral and oropharyngeal regions are relatively uncommon, and their diagnosis is challenging and complex due to the myriad histopathological subtypes. Herein, we report a large series of oral and oropharyngeal lymphomas and compare our data with the currently available literature., Methods: All cases diagnosed as lymphomas affecting the oral and oropharyngeal regions were retrospectively retrieved from seven Brazilian institutions. Clinicodemographic data and histopathological features were evaluated and described, while a comprehensive literature review was undertaken in order to compare our findings., Results: A total of 304 cases of oral and oropharyngeal lymphomas were obtained, mostly affecting individuals aged 60-69 years (n = 68) with a mean age at diagnosis of 54.2 ± 20.1 years. Males and females were equally affected. Mature B-cell neoplasms (87.2%) were the most common group, followed by mature T- and NK-cell neoplasms (11.2%) and precursor lymphoid neoplasms (1.6%). The most frequent subtypes in each group were diffuse large B-cell lymphomas, not otherwise specified (n = 99), extranodal NK/T-cell lymphomas, nasal type (n = 12), and B-lymphoblastic leukaemia/lymphomas, not otherwise specified (n = 4). The most commonly involved sites were the palate (26.3%), mandible (13%), and maxilla (10.5%)., Conclusion: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified, remains the most common subtype of lymphomas in the oral and oropharyngeal region. Background: Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is an aggressive B-cell lymphoma with three variants (endemic, sporadic, and immunodeficiency-associated), presenting with specific epidemiological and clinical features. Burkitt lymphoma affects the head and neck region (BLHN) in approximately 10% of cases. The aim of this study was to undertake a comparative analysis of the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical (IHC) features of BLHN diagnosed in patients from Africa, Guatemala, and Brazil., Methods: Cases diagnosed as BLHN were collected from the files of six oral pathology laboratory services (Brazil, South Africa, and Guatemala) and one Brazilian pediatric oncology hospital from 1986 to 2020. Clinicopathological and IHC data, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) status by in situ hybridization data for each case were reviewed and described., Results: Of the 52 cases, BLHN was predominant in pediatric patients [43 (82.69%)] and males [43 (82.69%)], with a mean age of 11.26 ± 9.68 years (range, 1-39 years). Neck and cervical lymph nodes [14 (26.92%)], and involvement of both maxilla and mandible [8 (15.38%)], were the most common anatomical sites. Clinically, tumor/swelling [40 (31.25%)], cervical lymphadenopathy [14 (10.94%)], pain [12 (9.38%)], and bone destruction [12 (9.38%)] were frequent findings. All cases showed typical morphological characteristics of BL. IHC profiles included positivity for CD20 [52 (100%)], CD10 [38 (79.17%)], Bcl6 [29 (87.88%)], and c-Myc protein [18 (81.82%)]. EBV was positive in 18 cases (62.07%). Objective: The objective of this study was to describe the clinicopathological, molecular, and prognostic features of oral/oropharyngeal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and high-grade B-cell lymphoma., Study Design: All cases were retrieved from 7 Brazilian institutions. Immunohistochemical reactions were performed to confirm the diagnoses and to categorize the tumors. In situ hybridization was used to detect Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and fluorescence in situ hybridization was used to identify gene rearrangements., Results: Most cases involved the oral cavity (76.8%). Males and females, with a mean age of 60 years, were evenly affected. Tumors mostly presented as painful swellings. Forty cases represented germinal center B-cell type (58%). Five cases presented double-hit translocation and 3 harbored rearrangement for MYC/BCL2/BCL6. EBV was detected in 3 cases (4.3%). The 5-year overall survival was 44.4%. Female sex, presence of pain and ulcer, microscopic "starry sky pattern" and necrosis, co-expression of c-Myc/Bcl2, and translocation of MYC were associated with a lower survival in univariate analysis (P = .05, P = .01, P = .01, P = .03, P = .05, P = .006, P = .05, respectively)., Conclusion: Patients affected by oral/oropharyngeal DLBCL have a low survival rate. Background: Sialolipoma is a rare histological variant of lipoma commonly misdiagnosed and composed of a proliferation of mature adipocytes with secondary entrapment of normal salivary gland tissue. The purpose of the present study is to report the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of 10 new cases of sialolipomas in conjunction with a review of the literature., Methods: A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was performed. A total of 54,190 biopsy records of oral and maxillofacial lesions from four oral and maxillofacial pathology services in Brazil were analysed. All cases of lipomas were reviewed, and clinical, demographic and histopathological data were collected of all cases compatible with sialolipomas. In addition, immunohistochemistry stains (AE1/AE3, CK7, 34βE12, S-100, HHF35, α-SMA and Ki-67) and a literature review based on a search of three electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus) were performed., Results: Among all lipomas reviewed, there were 10 cases of sialolipomas. The series comprised of 7 females (70.0%) and 3 males (30.0%), with a mean age of 46.1 ± 21.5 years (range: 11-71 years) and a 2.3:1 female-to-male ratio. The lower lip (n = 3, 30.0%) and tongue (n = 2, 20.0%) were the most common locations, presenting clinically as a nodule of slow growth and normal colour. Conservative surgical excision was the treatment in all cases. No recurrence was observed., Conclusion: Sialolipomas are a rare histological variant of lipoma, affecting the salivary glands, mainly in the parotid gland and palate of female adults. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of oral sarcomas from geographic regions of Brazil., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on biopsies obtained from January 2007 to December 2016 at twelve Brazilian oral and maxillofacial pathology centres. Gender, age, evolution time, clinical aspects, tumour location, tumour size at diagnosis, radiographic aspects and histopathological diagnosis were evaluated. Data were analysed using descriptive statistical methods., Results: From 176,537, a total of 200 (0.11%) oral sarcomas were reported, and the most prevalent were osteosarcomas (74 cases; 37%) and Kaposi's sarcomas (52 cases; 26%). Males were more affected than females at a mean age of 32.2 years old (range of 3-87 years). The most common symptoms were swelling¸ localised pain and bleeding at a mean evolution time of 5.14 months (range <1-156 months). The lesions were mostly observed in the mandible (90 cases; 45%), with a mean tumour size of 3.4 cm (range of 0.3-15 cm). Radiographically, the lesions presented a radiolucent aspect showing cortical bone destruction and ill-defined limits., Conclusions: Oral sarcomas are rare lesions with more than 50 described subtypes. Objectives: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) predominantly affects males in the fifth decade of life; nevertheless, an increased incidence in young patients has been reported worldwide, and the clinical and behavioral characteristics of tumors in this group are controversial, and the literature shows divergent results., Purpose: To investigate the clinicopathological features and prognostic significance of the immunoexpression of cell cycle and local invasion proteins in OSCC affecting young patients (≤40 years old)., Methods: A tissue microarray was performed with 132 OSCC samples (61 cases of young patients vs 71 cases of elderly patients) and submitted to immunohistochemical reactions with Ki67, p53, p16, Bcl-2, Cyclin D1, C-ErbB2, p21, Myc, EGFR, MMP-9, SMA, Cathepsin K and FGF-2 antibodies., Results: Clinicopathological features and survival rates were similar in both groups. Although overexpression of EGFR (P=.042) and MMP-9 (P=.001) was more frequent in young patients, only C-ErbB-2 (P=.048) and SMA (P=.048) expression correlated with lower disease-free survival (DFS) in this group of patients., Conclusion: Clinicopathological features and survival rates are similar between younger and older patients with OSCC. The different patterns of C-ErbB2, EGFR, MMP-9, and SMA expression between the groups merits further investigation to understand their role in the early tumor onset in young patients., (© 2017 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is highly associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), particularly the undifferentiated nonkeratinizing subtype. Prevalence of EBV in NPC in countries such as Guatemala and Brazil has not been studied., Methods: We analyzed 19 cases of NPC, 11 from Guatemala and 8 from Brazil, for the presence of EBV by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. Additionally, 19 hyperplastic adenoids from children were analyzed for EBV by in situ hybridization, 12 from Guatemala and 7 from Brazil., Results: All the NPC cases from Guatemala and 5 from Brazil were of the undifferentiated nonkeratinizing type. EBV-negative cases comprised 2 keratinizing NPC and 1 differentiated nonkeratinizing NPC. All undifferentiated nonkeratinizing NPC from both samples showed intense positivity for EBER, while LMP-1 only focally and scarcely expressed. EBER was positive in 75% and 43% of the adenoids from Guatemala and Brazil, respectively., Conclusions: All undifferentiated nonkeratinizing NPC irrespective of origin from Guatemala or Brazil were highly associated with EBV.

Objectives: A subgroup of tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is associated with human papillomavirus (HPV). Nevertheless, the prevalence of HPV seems to be variable in different regions and ethnic groups. There are no reports of HPV in tonsillar carcinomas in Guatemala, and data from Brazil are scarce. The aim of this study is to analyze and compare HPV presence in samples of tonsillar SCC from these countries., Study Design: This study describes the histologic features, expression of p16 by immunohistochemistry (IHC), and HPV by in situ hybridization (ISH) in 13 Guatemalan and 13 Brazilian patients., Results: All cases of tonsillar SCC from Guatemala were positive for p16, 92% expressed HPV by ISH, and 75% corresponded to the high-risk genotype 16/18. From the Brazilian patients, only four expressed p16, and all were negative for HPV., Conclusions: Cases from Guatemala, which were mostly nonkeratinizing SCC and originated from the crypt/reticular epithelium of the tonsil, had high-risk integrated HPV, whereas in Brazilian cases, which were mostly keratinizing SCC that originated from the surface epithelium, there was no association with HPV., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Objectives: Several medical and dental schools have described their experience in the transition from conventional to digital microscopy in the teaching of general pathology and histology disciplines; however, this transitional process has scarcely been reported in the teaching of oral pathology. Therefore, the objective of the current study is to report the transition from conventional glass slide to virtual microscopy in oral pathology teaching, a unique experience in Latin America., Study Design: An Aperio ScanScope® scanner was used to digitalize histological slides used in practical lectures of oral pathology. The challenges and benefits observed by the group of Professors from the Piracicaba Dental School (Brazil) are described and a questionnaire to evaluate the students' compliance to this new methodology was applied., Results: An improvement in the classes was described by the Professors who mainly dealt with questions related to pathological changes instead of technical problems; also, a higher interaction with the students was described. The simplicity of the software used and the high quality of the virtual slides, requiring a smaller time to identify microscopic structures, were considered important for a better teaching process., Conclusions: Virtual microscopy used to teach oral pathology represents a useful educational methodology, with an excellent compliance of the dental students.

Objective: To describe the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of Burkitt's lymphoma of the jaws in 7 patients of Northern Brazil., Study Design: Clinical data concerning gender, age, affected site, clinical presentation, symptomatology and follow-up were collected from the clinical files. Histopathology was complemented with a broad immunohistochemical panel and in situ hybridization for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)., Results: Most of the patients were infants and 5 out of 7 were males. The mandible was affected in 5 cases and all patients also presented abdominal involvement. All cases were positive for CD45, CD20, CD79a, CD10, Bcl-6 and EBV. Ki-67 proliferative index was approximately 100%. Six patients were treated with R-CHOP (Rituximab + Cyclophosphamide, Doxorubicin, Vincristine and Prednisolone) chemotherapy, and 2 of these died of the disease. One young adult patient refused treatment and died 3 months after initial diagnosis., Conclusion: Burkitt's lymphoma of the jaws diagnosed in the Amazon region of Brazil present similar clinicopathologic features to those described in endemic areas of Africa, including EBV positivity.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the distribution and demographic features of salivary gland tumors (SGTs) in a large Brazilian population., Study Design: A total of 493 cases of SGTs diagnosed between 2001 and 2011 from a general pathology laboratory and an oral pathology service were reviewed with respect to their clinicopathologic features., Results: A total of 369 tumors were benign and 124 were malignant. The mean age of patients with benign tumors was 46.3 years and that of patients with malignancies was 54.0 years. The parotid gland was the most common location (42.3%). Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) and Warthin's tumor were the most common benign neoplasias, whereas mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) and adenocarcinoma, not otherwise specified, were the most frequent malignancies., Conclusions: The present data confirm that PA and MEC are the most common benign and malignant SGTs. Salivary gland tumors are uncommon and most of them are of epithelial origin. Mesenchymal tumors affecting the parotid are extremely rare, and we present a series of 19 cases. All parotid tumors (600 cases) treated at the Department of Head and Neck Surgery from A.C. Camargo Hospital, Brazil from 1953 to 2003 were reviewed and 19 cases of nonlymphoid mesenchymal origin were selected. The histological characteristics were reviewed and clinical features were obtained from the medical charts. 15 out of 19 were benign tumors, including 5 lymphangiomas, 5 neurofibromas, and one case each of schwannoma, lipoma, solitary fibrous tumor, meningioma and giant cell tumor. Four malignant tumors were classified as rhabdomyosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, Langerhans cell histiocytosis and endodermal sinus tumor. From the malignant cases, only the patient with fibrosarcoma died due the tumor, the other three are alive with no signs of recurrence. In our series of 600 cases of parotid gland tumors, nonlymphoid mesenchymal tumors corresponded to 3.16% (19 cases; 15 benign and 4 malignant). All cases were treated by surgery with no recurrences, except one case of fibrosarcoma whose patient died of distant metastasis.

Chronic graft versus host disease (cGVHD) is the most common late complication of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. The oral cavity is the most common site of cGVHD involvement. This study sought to investigate the incidence of oral cGVHD, as well as the disease's impact on a patient's quality of life and the kind of lesions that resulted. Nineteen patients with cGVHD received a medical and dental evaluation; 18 (94.7%) had oral lesions. Nine patients (47.3%) demonstrated xerostomia and 6 (35.2%) demonstrated dysphagia. Six patients (35.2%) had a lichenoid clinical form of cGVHD in the oral cavity, 6 (35.2%) had an atrophic-ulcerative clinical form, 3 (17.6%) had a hyperceratotic clinical form, and 2 (10.5%) had mixed forms. The results demonstrated predominance of lichenoid and ulcerative-atrophic forms with similar incidence of these lesions. No factor that could contribute to the severity of cGVHD oral lesions was found.

Oral fungal infections (mycoses) have come into particular prominence since the advent of infection with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and recognition of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), as well as the phenomenal increase in world travel with increased exposure to infections endemic in the tropics. Paracoccidioidomycosis is a rare mycosis worldwide but common in Brazil and some other areas in Latin America. It can be life-threatening and can manifest with a spectrum of clinical presentations, including frequent oral lesions. This paper reviews the more recent information on Paracoccidioidomycosis, emphasizing those areas most relevant in dental science.

This work describes the knowledge and experience of dentists about cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). A total of 182 dentists from São Paulo State, Brazil were interviewed: 59% judged themselves able to define CPR, although only 46% had a correct concept; 54% believed himself to be able to perform CPR, however, none of them referred to have received practical training in CPR; 3% of the interviewed professionals mentioned the occurrence of cadiopulmonary arrest in their dental office. It was concluded that dental surgeons in Brazil should be better trained for medical emergencies that can occur in the dental office.
