In this paper, we measured B cell function in elderly healthy individuals (EH) and in elderly patients with Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM, ET2DM), which are treatment-naive, as compared to healthy young (YH) individuals. Results show a higher serum inflammatory status of elderly versus young individuals, and especially of ET2DM versus EH. This status is associated with a reduced response to the seasonal influenza vaccine and with increased frequencies of the circulating pro-inflammatory B cell subset called Double Negative (DN) B cells. B cells from ET2DM patients are not only more inflammatory but also hyper-metabolic as compared to those from EH controls. The results herein are to our knowledge the first to show that T2DM superimposed on aging further increases systemic and B cell intrinsic inflammation, as well as dysfunctional humoral immunity. The intervention process in historical buildings involves the application of a scientific methodology for the materials characterization. In Porto Alegre — RS, Brazil, several buildings with patrimonial value from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were preserved. This study presents the physicochemical analysis of mortar coating samples obtained from two buildings, the commercial and residential building "Frasca House" (1911) and the Metropolitan Curia of Porto Alegre (1888). The visual investigation and aspects of the color and morphology of the samples were determined with a stereoscopic microscope. Chemical analyses provided information on the binder:aggregate proportion and qualitative soluble salts, correlated with deterioration caused by efflorescence. Microstructural analysis allowed to determine the nature of the binders, aggregates and fine particulates. It is expected to contribute, in restoration interventions, to the choice and quantity of materials compatible with the original evaluated here, preserving it and, thus, extending the service life of the building. Several studies demonstrate the potential of models for the representation of phenomena such as urban heat islands. This article aimed to analyze atmospheric heat islands (UHIucl) by integrating primary air temperature data with spatial information such as land use and relief from a multicriteria model based on multiple linear regression. Furthermore, we compared the measured and estimated air temperature at 11 p.m. with the surface temperature at 10:51 p.m. (local time). These temperatures were obtained through the thermal band of the Landsat 8 satellite considering extraction points of interest in Presidente Prudente city, Brazil. The multicriteria model showed reliability in UHIucl spatialization, reaching the confidence interval (p-value ≤ 0.05). The model proves that urban surface materials are the main energy sources modulating heat transfer to the atmosphere, while vegetation has a temperature-reducing effect. Precise mappings such as the one proposed here are relevant for the formulation of measures that support decision-making by public authorities. Brazil’s response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic was characterised by an innovative alliance of governmental and non-governmental actors inspired by a strong progressive tradition in public health. Brazil eventually moved to decentralise HIV/AIDS programmes to its states and cities, a policy endorsed and supported financially by the World Bank as consistent with the mix of public and private elements central to the country’s HIV/AIDS strategy. However, decentralisation has not provided the results anticipated. Through interviews with key informants, government officials and patient advocates as well as observation of treatment sites, we outline how the shift of administration and resources to state and municipal bodies operated in practice. The Bank promoted decentralisation as an uncontroversial technical matter, and its programmatic guidelines implied that the nonprofit sector would be strengthened by it. However, instead of bringing HIV/AIDS policy closer to the grassroots, decentralisation has undermined the country’s early work and opened the door to a rejuvenated epidemic by empowering unsympathetic local elites, marginalising the human rights focus, and removing federal oversight. Purpose: Conventionally, in patients with completely edentulous mandibles, fixed prostheses have been supported by four or more implants. However, an alternative protocol employing three implants and immediate loading has been developed. The objective of the present study was to assess the rehabilitation of edentulous patients treated with a complete fixed mandibular prosthesis with immediate loading and supported by three implants. Materials and Methods: In this observational study, a total of 99 implants placed in 33 patients was evaluated after 18 months in use. Panoramic radiographs were digitized to measure bone loss at the mesial and distal surfaces of each implant. Results: Mean peri-implant bone loss was 0.66 ± 0.51 mm for the left implant, 0.92 ± 0.61 mm for the central implant, and 0.82 ± 0.53 mm for the right implant. The bone loss observed around the distal implants was similar to that seen around the central implant, and there were no statistically significant differences in peri-implant bone loss between the three implant locations. There was no significant correlation between implant length and bone loss. The results were compatible with the periimplant bone loss that has been described for prostheses of the same type supported by larger numbers of implants. Conclusions: The use of a complete fixed mandibular prosthesis with immediate loading supported by three implants proved to be an adequate option for the rehabilitation of edentulous patients. Objectives Depressive symptoms have been associated with obesity. Little is known about this relationship among immigrants. We examined relationships between depressive symptoms and weight status in immigrant women from three ethnic groups. Methods Participants were Brazilian, Haitian, and Latina women (n = 345) enrolled in Live Well, a community-based, randomized intervention designed to prevent weight gain in recent immigrants. Study data are from baseline when participants completed the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Perceived Stress Scale, a physical activity questionnaire, and socio-demographic questions; BMI was calculated from measured height and weight. Results Forty-four percent of participants (36 % of Brazilians, 66 % of Haitians, 30 % of Latinas) had high depressive symptoms (CES-D ≥ 16), and 38 % (26 % of Brazilians, 49 % of Haitians, 42 % of Latinas) were obese (BMI ≥ 30.0). Those reporting more depressive symptoms were more likely to be obese (Wald Chi square = 4.82, p < .05). An interaction between depressive symptoms, ethnic group, and income was revealed (F(4,340) = 2.91, p < .05), such that higher depressive symptoms were associated with higher BMI among Brazilians earning ≥$30,000 per year and with lower BMI among Brazilians earning <$30,000. The relationship between depressive symptoms and obesity did not differ by income among Haitians or Latinas. Conclusions Depressive symptoms and obesity were highly prevalent among these recently-immigrated women. Positive relationships between these variables were consistent across ethnic and income groups, with the exception of lower-income Brazilians. While these findings suggest similar patterns and health needs across several groups of immigrants, cultural differences should be considered when addressing these health conditions. The present article aimed to present a standardized protocol for the production of a chewable test material that has been used in masticatory efficiency and performance studies. This chewable material has advantages in respect to its physical properties when compared to other artificial and natural test foods. It is constituted by mixing condensation silicon (58.3% by weight), common plaster (10.2% by weight), alginate (12.5% by weight), solid vaseline (11.5% by weight), tooth paste (7.5% by weight), and catalyst paste (20.8 mg/g), adding also three drops of mint essence. The mixed material is then inserted into an acrylic mould with perforations of 12 mm in diameter and 5 mm in height to produce rounded tablets with those measures after polymerization. It was named "Optocal - Brazilian version". A volume of 3 cm³ is indicated for a chewing test, which corresponds to 12 tablets using the present methodology. The Palmeirópolis Zn-Pb-Cu volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit consists of four areas, presenting distinct features regarding host rocks, the geometry of ore bodies, hydrothermal alteration, deformation intensity, and metal proportions. The seven modeled Zn-Pb-Cu ore bodies occur mainly along with the contact between the Mesoproterozoic acid and basic metavolcanics within amphibolite facies. Some characteristics such as the relation of higher Zn-Pb and Cu grades to a higher proportion of acid and basic metavolcanic host rocks respectively, the same metamorphic grade and the gradational contact between volcanic host rocks, and distribution of alteration halo suggest that the original stratigraphy is still preserved. A smooth folding superposing the initial tight folds that define the ore bodies indicates at least two deformation events after the Zn-Pb-Cu mineralisation in the Palmeirópolis deposit. Finally, the geometry of the 3D ore bodies in Palmeirópolis are discussed against other VMS deposits around the world with 3D data available in terms of age, metamorphic, and deformation grades. COVID‐19 caused profound societal changes to cope rapidly with the new circumstances. The food market changed its quantity, quality, form, and frequency dynamics. Consequently, food‐eating habits and lifestyles like physical exercise likely experienced changes. An online‐based survey was conducted between June 2020 and January 2021 in the metropolitan regions of Rhine Ruhr Metropolis (RRM), Greater São Paulo (GSP), other metropolitan regions in São Paulo state (oMRSP), other Brazilian metropolitan regions (oBRMR), and the remaining urban areas in both countries (oUA), representing different contexts of Brazil and Germany. We assessed self‐reported changes in physical activity level, diet quality, self‐reported eating habits, and buying groceries during the first year of the pandemic. In Germany, indoor and outdoor activities increased for 34% of the respondents, while in Brazil, there was a decrease in physical activity for 50% of the participants. The Healthy Eating Index (HEI) scored higher among Brazilians (16.8) than Germans (15.2) on a 0–29 HEI scale. Increased awareness of healthy and sustainable eating habits was observed in GSP (0.7), oMRSP (0.63), oBRMR (0.7), and oUA (0.68) on a scale from no change (0) to change (1). In RRM, an increase in convenience foods was noticed (0.86). Participants reported discomfort with food purchasing due to hygiene measures and avoided going to the supermarket (0.7 on average in Brazil and 0.58 for females using the same 0–1 scale). Also, food supply at the grocery shops was reported to be often unavailable and in lower quantities. A real‐time assessment of self‐reported changes in eating habits and lifestyle during the lockdown in 2020 in different contexts is insightful for rethinking strategies to improve conditions in the post‐COVID‐19 era and prepare for future pandemics. A synthesis of the evolution of the Neoproterozoic belts or orogens surrounding the São Francisco craton (SFC) in northeastern and southeastern Brazil is presented. Emphasis is placed on recognizing the superposition of sedimentary basins, from rift to passive margin to retroarc and foreland, as well as identifying three diachronic continental collisions in the formation of the SFC. The Tonian passive margin occurs in the southern Brasília Belt with the Vazante, Canastra, and Araxá Groups. During the Tonian, island magmatic arcs and basins developed in front and behind these arcs (fore- and back-arcs). Subsequently, in the Cryogenian–Ediacaran, a retroarc foreland basin developed with part of the Araxá Group and the Ibiá Group, and finally, a foreland basin developed, which was filled by the Bambuí Group. A tectonic structure of superimposed nappes, with subhorizontal S1–2 foliation, formed between 650 and 610 Ma, is striking. In the northern Brasília Belt, there is the Stenian passive margin of the Paranoá Group, the Tonian intrusion of the Mafic–Ultramafic Complexes, and the Mara Rosa Island magmatic arc, active since the Tonian, with limited volcanic–sedimentary basins associated with the arc. A thrust–fold belt structure is prominent, with S1 foliation and late transcurrent, transpressive tectonics characterized by the Transbrasiliano (TB) lineament. The Cryogenian–Ediacaran collision between the Paranapanema and São Francisco cratons is the first collisional orogenic event to the west. In the Rio Preto belt, on the northwestern margin of the São Francisco craton, the Cryogenian–Ediacaran Canabravinha rift basin is prominent, with gravitational sediments that represent the intracontinental termination of the passive margin that occurs further northeast. The rift basin was intensely deformed at the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary, as was the Bambuí Group. On the northern and northeastern margins of the São Francisco craton, the Riacho do Pontal and Sergipano orogens stand out, showing a comparable evolution with Tonian and Cryogenian rifts (Brejo Seco, Miaba, and Canindé); Cryogenian–Ediacaran passive margin, where the Monte Orebe ophiolite is located; and Cordilleran magmatic arcs, which developed between 620 and 610 Ma. In the Sergipano fold belt, with a better-preserved outer domain, gravitational sedimentation occurs with glacial influence. A continental collision between the SFC and the PEAL (Pernambuco-Alagoas Massif) occurred between 610 and 540 Ma, with intense deformation of nappes and thrusts, with vergence to the south and accommodation by dextral transcurrent shear zones, such as the Pernambuco Lineament (PE). The Araçuaí belt or orogen was formed at the southeastern limit of the SFC by a Tonian intracontinental rift, later superimposed by a Cryogenian–Ediacaran rift–passive margin of the Macaúbas Group, with gravitational sedimentation and glacial influence, and distally by oceanic crust. It is overlain by a retroarc basin with syn-orogenic sedimentation of the Salinas Formation, partly derived from the Rio Doce cordilleran magmatic arc and associated basins, such as the Rio Doce and Nova Venécia Groups. A third continental collision event (SF and Congo cratons), at the end of the Ediacaran (580–530 Ma), developed a thrust–fold belt that deforms the sediments of the Araçuaí Belt and penetrates the Paramirim Corridor, transitioning to the south to a dextral strike-slip shear zone that characterizes the Ribeira Belt. The current climate change scenario caused by anthropogenic activities has resulted in novel environmental pressures, increasing the occurrence and severity of fungal infections in the marine environment. Research on fungi in several taxonomic groups is widespread although not the case for elasmobranchs (sharks and rays). In this context, the aim of the present study was to screen the oral fungal microbiota present in artisanally captured Rioraja agassizii, a batoid that, although endangered, is highly fished and consumed worldwide. Oropharyngeal samples were obtained by swabbing and the samples were investigated using morphological and phenotypic methods by streaking on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) and subculturing onto CHROMagar Candida (BD Difco) and CHROMagar Candida Plus (CHROMagarTM), as well as molecular techniques by amplification of the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 ribosomal DNA region and a MALDI-TOF MS assessment. The findings indicated the presence of Candida parapsilosis (seven isolates), Candida duobushaemulonii (one isolate) and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (three isolates), several of these reported for the first time in Rioraja agassizii. In addition, a 100% agreement between the MALDI-TOF results and partial ITS region sequencing was noted, demonstrating that the MALDI-TOF MS is a rapid and effective alternative for yeast identification in Rioraja agassizii isolates and potentially in other elasmobranch species. These findings highlight the need for further research to determine the potential impact on elasmobranch health, ecology, and commercial fisheries. Furthermore, this research is paramount in a One Health framework and may be employed to predict elasmobranch responses to an evolving ocean, keep healthy populations in check, monitor species, and assess the public health consequences of consuming these species. Comparisons among the different vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 are important to understand which type of vaccine provides more protection. This study aimed to evaluate the real-life efficacy through symptomatic infection and the humoral response of six different vaccines against SARS-CoV-2—BNT162b2, mRNA-1273, ChAdOx1-S, CoronaVac, Ad26.COV2, and Ad5-nCoV. This multicentric observational longitudinal study involved hospitals from Mexico and Brazil in which volunteers who received complete vaccination schemes were followed for 210 days after the last dose. SARS-CoV-2 Spike 1–2 IgG levels were taken before receiving the first vaccine, 21 days after each dose, and the last sample at six months (+/−1 month) after the last dose. A total of 1132 individuals exposed to five COVID-19 waves were included. All vaccines induced humoral responses, and mRNA vaccines had the highest antibody levels during follow-up. At six months, there was a decline in the SARS-CoV-2 Spike 1–2 IgG antibody titers of 69.5% and 36.4% in subjects with negative and positive history of infection respectively. Infection before vaccination and after complete vaccination scheme correlated with higher antibody titers. The predictors of infection were vaccination with CoronaVac compared to BNT162b2 and ChAdOx1-S. In the presence of comorbidities such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or dyslipidemia, CoronaVac lowered the risk of infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, Brazil has become one of the countries most affected by this disease. A year into the pandemic, a second wave of COVID-19 emerged, with a rapid spread of a new SARS-CoV-2 lineage of concern. Several vaccines have been granted emergency-use authorization, leading to a decrease in mortality and severe cases in many countries. However, the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants raises the alert for potential new waves of transmission and an increase in pathogenicity. We compared the demographic and clinical data of critically ill patients infected with COVID-19 hospitalized in Rio de Janeiro during the first and second waves between July 2020 and October 2021. In total, 106 participants were included in this study; among them, 88% had at least one comorbidity, and 37% developed severe disease. Disease severity was associated with older age, pre-existing neurological comorbidities, higher viral load, and dyspnea. Laboratory biomarkers related to white blood cells, coagulation, cellular injury, inflammation, renal, and liver injuries were significantly associated with severe COVID-19. During the second wave of the pandemic, the necessity of invasive respiratory support was higher, and more individuals with COVID-19 developed acute hepatitis, suggesting that the progression of the second wave resulted in an increase in severe cases. These results can contribute to understanding the behavior of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil and may be helpful in predicting disease severity, which is a pivotal for guiding clinical care, improving patient outcomes, and defining public policies. Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by blood flukes from the genus Schistosoma. Brazil hosts the main endemic area in the Americas, where Schistosoma mansoni is the only species causing the disease. Kato-Katz (KK) thick smear is the WHO recommended screening test for populational studies, but there is growing evidence for the sensitivity limitations associated with KK, especially in areas with low parasite loads. Helmintex (HTX) is another highly sensitive egg-detection method, based on the magnetic properties of S. mansoni eggs and their isolation in a magnetic field. The objective of this study is to evaluate both KK and HTX in a moderate endemic locality, Areia Branca, located in the municipality of Pacatuba, in the state of Sergipe in northeastern Brazil. From 234 individual fecal samples, two KK thick smears were prepared and evaluated for each sample. Similarly, 30 g of each fecal sample was processed by HTX protocol. Eggs were detected in 80 (34.18%) residents. Twenty-three (9.83%) samples were positive for eggs (only by KK), and 77 (32.91%) samples showed positive for eggs (only by HTX). Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy estimates gave values of 28.75%, 100% and 75.64%, respectively, for KK, and 96.25%, 100% and 98.72% respectively, for HTX. The positive predictive value was 100% for both methods, while the negative predictive value was 72.99% for KK and 98.09% for HTX. Overall, HTX presented a superior performance compared to the one sample, two slides KK examination. The study confirms the role of HTX as a reference method for the definition of true-positive samples in comparative accuracy studies and its potential role in the late stages when the certification of schistosomiasis transmission interruption is required. Diagnostic tests are important tools for the elimination of this NTD, besides the effective implementation of safe water, basic sanitation, snail control, and the treatment of infected populations. The Alta Floresta Gold Province (PAAF) is abundant in gold deposits and, located in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, is an ideal place to study the geoelectric signature of gold mineralization. Auriferous mineralization occurs along shear zones in quartz veins and disseminated granites in this region. Ores are associated with oxides and sulfides, mainly with pyrites. To identify primary gold or continuities of the mineralized zones, data were acquired using the geophysical methods of electrical resistivity and induced polarization in three gold mines: Raimunda, Truilio, and Porteira. Dipole–dipole arrays with electrode spacings of 20 and 25 m were used to investigate up to 100 m in depth. Resistivity and chargeability range scales were developed with statistical analyses of all the geophysical and geological data. The geophysical models of the Raimunda and Truilio gold mines showed coherence with the boreholes, but the geophysical models of the Porteira gold mine were not coherent with the boreholes. The resistivity and chargeability parameters indicated that the lithotypes (soils, saprolites, and monzogranites) could be characterized and identified as potential mineralized targets. The soils ranged from 1000 to 8000 ohm.m, the saprolites had values from 150 to 800 ohm.m, and the monzogranite values were from 1100 to 9000 ohm.m. The mineralized targets had values from 18 to 35 mV/V. The results confirm the efficiency of the resistivity and induced polarization methods to find sulfides in shear zones in the Alta Floresta Gold Province. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exploring covered terrains is a challenge that requires the integration of multiple sources of knowledge, particularly in the initial stages of mineral exploration. The Apuí region, located in the Southwestern Amazon Craton, has a small and constant gold production, despite the deep cover and limited geological knowledge. The gold is mainly hosted in quartz veins and breccias that cut Paleoproterozoic volcano-sedimentary sequences. The occurrences have similar characteristics to magmatic–hydrothermal deposits, such as a lack of regional metamorphism and intense hydrothermalization. We undertook a multi-source prospective investigation on different scales using 2D and 3D techniques to translate the footprints of the mineral system into mappable criteria. Gold prospectivity maps for the Juma District and Guida Target were produced by integrating geological, geochemical, and geophysical datasets in knowledge-driven fuzzy systems. Regional airborne magnetization vector inversion (MVI) models were utilized. The correlation between the drill cores and the magnetic susceptibility models highlighted a potential surface for gold mineralization associated with the boundary between a granitic intrusion and volcano-sedimentary rocks. The prospectivity maps reduced the search area, and the regional susceptibility models allowed for the reconnaissance of structures and bodies that may be related to gold mineralization at depth. In June 2020, an atypical fatal outbreak in a Brazilian Nile tilapia farm was investigated. Twenty‐three animals were collected and different tissues were used for bacterial isolation, histopathological and electron microscopic examination and viral detection using molecular methods. A large number of megalocytes were observed in the histopathological analysis of several tissues. Icosahedral virions, with a diameter of approximately 160 nm, were visualized inside the megalocytes through transmission electron microscopy of the spleen tissue. The virions were confirmed to be infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) through PCR and sequencing analyses of the fish samples. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the virus belongs to the Clade 1 of ISKNV. This viral pathogen is associated with high mortality in the early stages of cultured Nile tilapia in the United States, Thailand and Ghana; however, until now, there have been no reports from ISKNV affecting cultured fish in Brazil. Additionally, in 14 out of 23 sampled fish, Streptococcus agalactiae, Edwardsiella tarda or Aeromonas hydrophila infections were also detected. This is the first report of fatal ISKNV infections in the Brazilian Nile tilapia fish farms and represents a new challenge to the aquaculture sector in the country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This study presents new geochemical data on rocks from the Vespor suite, an important mafic unit from the Juruena arc, Roosevelt-Juruena terrain, SW Amazonian craton, northwest Mato Grosso, Brazil, attempting to define their tectonic setting and type of mantle source. The Juruena arc may be part of a magmatic belt (Jamari and Juruena arcs) at the southwestern Amazonian craton during assembly of the Columbia supercontinent. The investigated rocks represent a Paleoproterozoic subduction-related mafic suite of sigmoidal bodies, composed mainly of gabbro, norite, gabbronorite and diorite, that underwent amphibolite facies metamorphism. Here we present also preliminary petrology aspects and zircon U–Pb geochronology. Geochemical character and variation trends of major and trace elements as well as selected trace element ratios suggest that Vespor suite rocks have a tholeiitic lineage of arc affinity controlled by fractional crystallization with a prominent iron enrichment trend. Gabbros, norites and gabbronorites are characterized by enrichment of LILE and weakly to moderately differentiated HFSE patterns, suggesting their deviation from an enriched heterogeneous lithospheric mantle source. Vespor suite rocks are characterized by depletion of Nb–Ta, P and Ti, with flat distribution of HFSE, markedly large variations in most of the LILE, positive anomalies displayed by Ba, K, Th, Sr, Pb and weak negative anomalies of Hf–Zr. These features reflect limited degrees of crustal contamination associated with a subduction-related magma process where the mantle wedge was chemically modified. In addition, the enrichment in LILE and Pb, low values of the ratios (Lan/Smn – 0.83 to 4.58) and (Nbn/Lan – 0.04 to 0.45), but high Th/Yb ratios, gently to moderately sloping REE profiles (La/Ybn = 2.53–7.37), negative anomalies in HFSE (Ta, Zr, Hf, and Ti), and positive anomalies in LILE (Th, Ba, Sr), suggest derivation from a metasomatized lithospheric mantle source above a subduction zone with weak crustal contamination. Both the composition of the mantle source and the degree of partial melting that produced the parental magmas of these rocks, determined by using REE abundance and ratios, indicate that gabbroic/dioritic melts were generated at different degrees of melting of the source: about 5–20% partial melting of a garnet-spinel lherzolite, around 1–10% partial melting of spinel lherzolite source, and approximately 1–5% partial melting of intermediate source composition, and crystallizing between 1.773 and 1.764 Ma. Annual vaccination against influenza is the best tool to prevent deaths and hospitalizations. Regular updates of trivalent inactivated influenza vaccines (TIV) are necessary due to high mutation rates in influenza viruses. TIV effectiveness is affected by antigenic mismatches, age, previous immunity, and other host factors. Studying TIV effectiveness annually in different populations is critical. The serological responses to Southern-Hemisphere TIV and circulating influenza strains were evaluated in 2018–2020 among Brazilian volunteers, using hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assays. Post-vaccination titers were corrected to account for pre-vaccination titers. Our population achieved >83% post-vaccination seroprotection levels, whereas seroconversion rates ranged from 10% to 46%. TIV significantly enhanced antibody titers and seroprotection against all prior and contemporary vaccine and circulating strains tested. Strong cross-reactive responses were detected, especially between H1N1 subtypes. A/Singapore/INFIMH-16-0019/2016, included in the 2018 TIV, induced the poorest response. Significant titer and seroprotection reductions were observed 6 and 12 months after vaccination. Age had a slight effect on TIV response, whereas previous vaccination was associated with lower seroconversion rates and titers. Despite this, TIV induced high seroprotection for all strains, in all groups. Mineral prospectivity mapping (MPM), like other geoscience fields, is subject to a variety of uncertainties. When data about unfavorable sites to find deposits (i.e., drill intersections to barren rocks) is lacking in MPM using machine learning (ML) methods, the synthetic generation of negative datasets is required. As a result, techniques for selecting point locations to represent negative examples must be employed. Several approaches have been proposed in the past; however, one can never be certain that the points chosen are true negatives or, at the very least, optimal for training. As a consequence, methodologies that account for the uncertainty of the generation of negative datasets in MPM are needed. In this paper, we compare two criteria for selecting negative examples and quantify the uncertainty associated with this process by generating 400 potential maps for each of the three ML methods utilized (200 maps for each criterion), which include random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and k-nearest neighbors (KNC). The results showed that applying a geological constraint to the creation of negative datasets reduced prediction uncertainty and improved overall model performance but produced larger areas of very high probability (i.e., >0.9) when compared to using only the spatial distribution of known deposits and occurrences as a constraint. SHAP values were used to find approximations for the importance of features in nonlinear methods, and kernel density estimations were used to examine how they varied depending on the negative dataset used to train the ML models. Prospectivity models for magmatic-hydrothermal gold deposits were generated using data from the shuttle radar terrain mission, gamma-ray, magnetic lineaments, and proximity to dykes. Simple Summary: Monitoring diseases and lesions in free-ranging and captive wild animals is important for biodiversity conservation and for understanding factors that can impact not only animal health but also human and environmental health. Here, we report for the first time a case of liver cancer in a free-ranging three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus) and describe the gross, microscopic, and immunohistochemical features of the lesion. The tumor was identified during the necropsy of a three-toed sloth that had to be euthanized due to serious consequences of an accident in the electrical network. Despite not being related to the cause of death of the animal, the type of tumor observed, a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is one of the most frequent hepatic neoplasms in the liver of humans and domestic animals. The increasing interest of tumors in wildlife is important for biodiversity conservation and for monitoring environmental agents and/or contaminants with potential impact on human health. Here we described the occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in noncirrhotic liver of a free-ranging three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus) from the Atlantic Forest biome in Brazil. The HCC showed a moderate mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate within the tumor tissue but with no inflammation and fibrosis in the adjacent liver tissue. Upon immunohistochemistry, neoplastic cells were diffusely positive for HepPar-1 and glutamine-synthetase presenting an irregular and random immunostaining pattern; β-catenin was positive in the cytoplasmic membrane of malignant hepatocytes; and cytokeratin 19 immunostaining was restricted to bile duct epithelial cells. The liver tissue was negative for HBV-like and HCV-like viruses assessed by molecular tests. The potential similarity of pathogenesis may reinforce the need for research on environmental and/or infectious agents associated with HCC that may contribute to the understanding of cancer in wildlife. Given the hypothesis that co-inoculation with plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) enhances the beneficial effects of Rhizobium tropici with greater mineral nutrition, optimizes biological nitrogen fixation and reduces use of fertilizers in bean plants, the objective of this research was to evaluate the synergistic effects of Rhizobium tropici associated with Azospirillum brasilense, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas fluorescens and their combinations, on increasing the efficiency of NPK fertilization to obtain high winter yields of the (irrigated) common bean in the Cerrado region. The experiment was carried out in the field over two years in a Rhodic Hapludox under a no-till system in Selvíria, Brazil. The experimental design comprised complete randomized blocks with four replications in a 3 × 7 factorial scheme. The treatments consisted of three doses of NPK fertilizer (control—0 kg ha−1 (control); 50% of the recommended dose; 100% of the recommended dose in two parts) and seven doses of inoculation or co-inoculation (control; Rhizobium tropici; R. tropici + Azospirillum brasilense; R. tropici + Bacillus subtilis; R. tropici + Pseudomonas fluorescens; R. tropici + A. brasilense + B. subtilis; R. tropici + A. brasilense + P. fluorescens). The PGPB in the co-inoculations increased the hundred-grain weight, the grain pod−1, the grain plant−1 and the grain yield following the NPK doses. The grain yield of the common bean was increased by co-inoculation with R. tropici + A. brasilense + P. fluorescens without NPK treatments, co-inoculation with R. tropici + P. fluorescens and R. tropici + A. brasilense + B. subtilis with the 50% dose of NPK and co-inoculation with R. tropici + B. subtilis with the recommended dose of NPK fertilizer (100%). The article presents an experiment that aims to identify breakfast patterns and investigate the relationship with weight status among Brazilian adolescents.

The incidence and mortality rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) in Northeast Brazil are increasing. To study the association between CRC and diet, data were obtained from 64 patients with CRC and 123 sex- and age-matched controls. The dietary details were recorded using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Nutrient intake was calculated using Dietsys software (National Cancer Institute, Maryland, USA). In a binary logistic regression model of dietary components (model 1), the chance of CRC increased by 0.2% (odds ratio [OR] = 1.002; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.000–1.004) for each gram of processed meat intake per week (p < 0.010). Consumption of eggs decreased the chance by 0.1% per gram (OR = 0.999; 95% CI: 0.998–1.000; p < 0.050). The use of oil (including olive oil) for served food decreased the chance by 1.8% (OR = 0.982; 95% CI: 0.970–0.992) for each time consumed (p < 0.010). In a model of nutritional factors (model 2), intake of vitamin E decreased the chance by 16.8% (OR = 0.832; 95% CI: 0.725–0.940) for each milligram intake per week (p < 0.010). Brazilians are a growing immigrant population in the United States and there is a lack of interventions to promote healthful energy balance-related behaviors (EBRBs) and prevent obesity among Brazilian preschool-age children. To develop needed interventions, information is required about parents' perceptions of the importance of EBRBs and where they obtain information about these behaviors. To assess Brazilian immigrant parents' perception of the importance of EBRBs and information sources they use to support their preschool-age children's healthful EBRBs. Cross-sectional survey. Fifty-two immigrant parents, most classified as having low acculturation, participated. In total, about 20–50% of parents perceived the six examined EBRBs as being extremely important. Parents reported that pediatricians, nurses, and WIC professionals were their primary sources for information about EBRBs. Increased health education on the importance of EBRBs is needed. Health educators can facilitate linguistic and culturally sensitive communication, education, and provide guidance to parents on how to foster the development and maintenance of their preschool-age children's healthful EBRBs. In this paper, different types of rocks exploited in a quarry located in the Limeira region (São Paulo State, Brazil) were studied to investigate its main petrographic characteristics, physical–mechanical (apparent specific weigh ρa, apparent porosity ηa, water absorption αa and uniaxial compressive strength UCS) and thermoanalytical properties, whose curves of each of the rocks were obtained from thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis and thermomechanical analysis (TMA). Four main petrographic types were evaluated: an aphanitic rock (APH), a diabase (DIA) and two monzodiorites with distinct granulations designated as MOMM and MONMC. In terms of mineralogical composition APH is the only rock that presents volcanic glass, while for the other rocks the main mineralogy was always associated with plagioclases, clinopyroxenes and opaque minerals. The results of the physical and mechanical characterization indicate the good aptitude of these materials to be used as aggregates in engineering works. The obtained values of apparent porosity (ηa) were less than 1% for all rocks. The value of resistance rates for all samples showed that the APH has the larger value, which is attributed to the grain size of the rock. The TG curves of each of the four samples contain small mass losses between the initial temperature and around 105 °C, which attributed to the water absorption. Besides, the APH sample had a mass loss attributed to the carbonate compound. The TMA curves showed that form DIA and MOMM are similar between them, while the APH differ from both. Purpose: To determine the range of vertical cantilever (VC), real cantilever (RC), and height of the imaginary triangle (h) formed by the bases of the three implant cylinders in full-arch mandibular prostheses supported by three implants. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised 203 patients (147 women, 56 men; mean age, 58 years, range, 37 to 79 years) with full-arch mandibular rehabilitations. Their prostheses were measured in relation to implant placement to characterize numerical values for VC, force arm of the lever system (represented by the distal cantilever or RC), and resistance arm of the system (represented by the height of the imaginary triangle formed by the bases of the three implants). Data were tabulated and means and standard deviations calculated for all measurements. The range of each of the three measurements was then divided into quintiles for characterizing data distribution. Results: The mean (standard deviation) values found were as follows: VC1 = 17.11 (3.39) mm; VC2 = 17.46 (2.89) mm; VC3 = 16.68 (3.16) mm; RC1 = 14.67 (3.90) mm; RC3 = 15.02 (4.15) mm; h = 8.27 (2.96) mm. Conclusion: VC ranged from 7.37 to 26.44 mm, RC ranged from 4.00 to 26.93 mm, and the height of the imaginary triangle formed by the bases of the three implant cylinders ranged from 0.37 to 15.33 mm. Purpose: This study evaluated the effects of different implant-based prostheses on swallowing threshold, dietary intake, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Materials and Methods: This prospective paired controlled clinical trial followed partially edentulous subjects, who sequentially used implant-supported removable partial dentures and implant-supported fixed partial dentures (IFPDs). Swallowing threshold was assessed by counting the masticatory cycles and median particle size (X50) calculation. Nutritional intake was verified by a 3-day food record. OHRQoL was measured with the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-49). Data were evaluated with repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results: Twelve subjects (mean age 62.6 ± 7.8 years; range, 55 to 87) took part in the study. IFPD treatment significantly reduced X50 values and the number of chewing cycles. Higher intake of fiber, calcium, and iron and lower consumption of cholesterol-rich food were observed after IFPD use. OHIP summary score and OHIP physical pain domain were lower with the IFPD. Conclusion: IFPD use leads to more efficient mastication and improves dietary intake and OHRQoL. This information will guide dentists to better clinical management of partially edentulous patients. Background: The use of technology is an increasingly common practice among preschoolers. Little is known about the relationship between screen time exposure (STE) and aspects related to family and the environment.Aim: The aim is to characterize STE in Brazilian children aged between 3 and 5 years. Furthermore, the objective of this study is to associate the STE of children and of their parents with sociodemographic variables.Methods: Children aged between 3 and 5 years from southern Brazil and their parents participated in this study. To investigate STE, the researchers developed a specific questionnaire. To compare STE between age groups, the Kruskal-Wallis test was performed, followed by Dunn's post hoc test. Spearman's correlation and linear regression were used to correlate the variables.Results: Children (n = 237) spend an average of 3.7 ± 0.8 h/day in front of screens. The STE of children had a moderately positive correlation with the STE of their parents (r = 0.4; p-value < 0.001). Only the variables of the children's and parents' STE had a significant and positive association. The model is significant (F = 6164, p-value < 0.001) and the residuals of the model met the necessary assumptions, with normal distribution, constant variance and without the presence of outliers.Conclusion: Children in southern Brazil remain in front of screens four times longer than the recommended amount of time. Background: Leprosy continues to be a public health problem in Brazil. Furthermore, detection rates in elderly people have increased, particularly those of multibacillary (L-Lep) patients, who are responsible for transmitting M. leprae. Part of the decline in physiological function during aging is due to increased oxidative damage and change in T cell subpopulations, which are critical in defense against the disease. It is not still clear how age-related changes like those related to oxidation affect elderly people with leprosy. The aim of this work was to verify whether the elderly leprosy patients have higher ROS production and how it can impact the evolution of leprosy. Methodology/Principal findings: 87 leprosy patients, grouped according to age range and clinical form of leprosy, and 25 healthy volunteers were analyzed. Gene expression analysis of antioxidant and oxidative burst enzymes were performed in whole blood using Biomark's microfluidic-based qPCR. The same genes were evaluated in skin lesion samples by RT-qPCR. The presence of oxidative damage markers (carbonylated proteins and 4-hydroxynonenal) was analyzed by a DNPH colorimetric assay and immunofluorescence. Carbonylated protein content was significantly higher in elderly compared to young patients. One year after multidrug therapy (MDT) discharge and M. leprae clearance, oxidative damage increased in young L-Lep patients but not in elderly ones. Both elderly T and L-Lep patients present higher 4-HNE in cutaneous lesions than the young, mainly surrounding memory CD8+ T cells. Furthermore, young L-Lep demonstrated greater ability to neutralize ROS compared to elderly L-Lep patients, who presented lower gene expression of antioxidant enzymes, mainly glutathione peroxidase. Conclusions/Significance: We conclude that elderly patients present exacerbated oxidative damage both in blood and in skin lesions and that age-related changes can be an important factor in leprosy immunopathogenesis. Ultimately, elderly patients could benefit from co-supplementation of antioxidants concomitant to MDT, to avoid worsening of the disease. Author summary: Leprosy, which has been reported throughout human history since Biblical times, still presents unclear aspects in regards to its pathogeny, and represents a public health concern, particularly in developing countries, where poor sanitary conditions of socially disfavored groups is a relevant contributing factor in maintaining disease dissemination. Although its signs and symptoms are primarily found in young adults, the increasing number of elderly individuals with leprosy is a recent phenomenon that requires clarification. Considering the specific biochemical profile of the elderly, as well as the influence thereof on their immune response to infection, this work demonstrates that elderly leprosy patients present increased levels of oxidative damage in blood and skin lesions when compared to younger patients. Such findings appear to be correlated with low gene expression of antioxidant enzymes, particularly among multibacillary patients. Background: Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) are key to preventing sexual transmission of HIV, whose sexual partners are at high risk of acquiring HIV. We aimed to determine the factors associated with PrEP and PEP's knowledge as secondary prevention among people living with HIV/AIDS.Method: Cross-sectional analytical study carried out among people living with HIV/AIDS treated at five specialized services in the city of Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil. Data were collected from July 2016 to July 2017. Individual interviews were conducted. We used multivariable logistic regression to determine factors associated with knowing PrEP and PEP.Results: Of the 397 participants, 140 (35.26%) were heterosexual women aged 40 to 49 years (36.2%).Participants with less than 11 years of study (adjusted odds: 0.29; 95% CI: 0.13-0.60); who did not have a low viral load or did not know their viral load (adjusted odds: 0.29; 95% CI: 0.09-0.83) and those with casual partners (adjusted odds: 0.29; 95% CI: 0.09-0.83) were less likely to know about the PrEP. MSM (adjusted odds: 2.88; 95% CI: 1.59-5.3) and those who used alcohol during sexual intercourse (adjusted odds: 1.7; 95% CI: 1.0-2.8) were more likely to know about the PEP.Conclusions: The knowledge about PEP and PrEP is low in Brazil. This may undermine secondary prevention efforts. Objective: To compare the frequency of fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytological results between nodules 1 cm or less and nodules greater than 1 cm. Methods: All FNAs performed between January 2016 and December 2019 at an institute in Brazil were analysed. For each nodule, at least two conventional slides were produced (one stained by Giemsa and the other by hematoxylin and eosin). All cases were reviewed by two cytopathologists and were reported following the Bethesda System. Clinical information (gender and age) and ultrasound data (nodule size and location) were collected. The magnitude of association was measured using the prevalence ratio (PR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) considering two groups of nodules: 1.0 cm or less, and greater than 1 cm. Results: A total of 3703 nodules were analysed from 3265 patients (2906 women [88.48%], 359 men [11.51%], with a combined mean age of 52 years). Considering the prevalence ratio of Bethesda categories between these two groups of nodules, the nondiagnostic or unsatisfactory category (PR: 3.0, 95% CI: 2.2‐4.2) and the suspicious for malignancy category (PR: 1.6, 95% CI: 1.1–2.4) were significantly associated with nodules measuring 1 cm or less. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that nodules 1 cm or less are significantly associated with the nondiagnostic and suspicious for malignancy categories of the Bethesda System when compared to nodules greater than 1 cm. Thyroid nodules of 1 cm or less are associated with nondiagnostic (category I) and suspicious for malignancy (category V) categories. Background: Monovalent meningococcal C conjugate vaccine (MCCV) was introduced into the routine immunization program in many countries in Europe and worldwide following the emergence of meningococcal serogroup C (MenC) in the late 1990s. This systematic literature review summarizes the immediate and long-term impact and effectiveness of the different MCCV vaccination schedules and strategies employed.Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search for peer-reviewed, scientific publications in the databases of MEDLINE (via PubMed), LILACS, and SCIELO. We included studies from countries where MCCV have been introduced in routine vaccination programs and studies providing the impact and effectiveness of MCCV published between 1st January 2001 and 31st October 2017.Results: Forty studies were included in the review; 30 studies reporting impact and 17 reporting effectiveness covering 9 countries (UK, Spain, Italy, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands). Following MCCV introduction, significant and immediate reduction of MenC incidence was consistently observed in vaccine eligible ages in all countries with high vaccine uptake. The reduction in non-vaccine eligible ages (especially population > 65 years) through herd protection was generally observed 3-4 years following introduction. Vaccine effectiveness (VE) was mostly assessed through screening methods and ranged from 38 to 100%. The VE was generally highest during the first year after vaccination and waned over time. The VE was better maintained in countries employing catch-up campaigns in older children and adolescents, compared to routine infant only schedules.Conclusions: MCCV were highly effective, showing a substantial and sustained decrease in MenC invasive meningococcal disease. The epidemiology of meningococcal disease is in constant transition, and some vaccination programs now include adolescents and higher valent vaccines due to the recent increase in cases caused by serogroups not covered by MCCV. Continuous monitoring of meningococcal disease is essential to understand disease evolution in the setting of different vaccination programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Myxozoans of the family Myxobolidae are common parasites in fish. The diversity and ecology of the species of the genus Unicauda are poorly known, which hampers the understanding of the distribution and prevalence of this group of parasites. In the present study, cysts containing parasites whose morphology was consistent with the genus Unicauda were found in the circumorbital region of the ocular conjunctiva of the freshwater fish Moenkhausia grandisquamis Müller & Troschel, 1845 (Characiformes: Characidae) and Triportheus angulatus Spix & Agassiz, 1829 (Characiformes: Triportheidae). The spores have an oval body and long caudal appendage, with a mean total length of 65.2 ± 5.9 μm and width of 5.2 ± 0.7 μm, with two oval and symmetrical polar capsules of 4.9 ± 0.5 μm in length and 1.4 ± 0.2 μm in width, containing polar filaments with five or six coils. An integrated comparative analysis of the morphological characteristics of this parasite and partial sequences of the SSU rDNA gene supported the identification of a new species of histozoic parasite of the genus Unicauda found in fish from the Tocantins River basin, in the eastern Brazilian Amazon region. On January 2019, Brazil's new far-right president Jair Bolsonaro was sworn into office. Bolsonaro's administration supports downsizing the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), while increasing the size of the private health sector. The new administration might leave millions of Brazilians without medical care, including hundreds of thousands of people living with HIV/AIDS. Bolsonaro's administration, allied with a highly conservative Congress and sharp decreases in federal funding for public health, education and research, could jeopardize key health and human rights strategies focused on women, LGBTQ + individuals, Indigenous populations, and people living with HIV/AIDS. Techniques with high sensitivity and specificity are required for an accurate diagnosis in low-transmission settings, where the conventional parasitological methods are insensitive. We determined the accuracy of an up-converting phosphor-lateral flow circulating anodic antigen (UCP-LF CAA) assay in urine and serum for Schistosoma mansoni diagnosis in low-prevalence settings in Ceará, Brazil, before and after praziquantel treatment. Clinical samples of a total of 258 individuals were investigated by UCP-LF CAA, point-of-care—circulating cathodic antigen (POC-CCA), soluble worm antigen preparation (SWAP)-ELISA and Kato-Katz (KK); a selection of 128 stools by real-time PCR technique. Three and 6-weeks after treatment, samples were collected and evaluated by detection Schistosoma circulating antigens (CAA and CCA). The UCP-LF CAA assays detected 80 positives (31%) with urine and 82 positives (31.8%) with serum. The urine POC-CCA and serum SWAP-ELISA assays detected 30 (11.6%) and 107 (40.7%) positives, respectively. The Kato-Katz technique revealed only 4 positive stool samples (1.6%). Among the 128 individuals with complete data records, 19 cases were identified by PCR (14.8%); Sensitivities and specificities of the UCP-LF CAA assays, determined versus a combined reference standard based on CCA/KK/PCR positivity, ranged from 60–68% to 68–77%, respectively. In addition only for comparative purposes, sensitivities of the different assays were determined vs. a comparative reference based on CAA/KK/PCR positivity, showing the highest sensitivity for the urine CAA assay (80%), followed by the serum CAA (70.9%), SWAP-ELISA (43.6%), PCR (34.5%), POC-CCA (29.1%), whilst triplicate Kato-Katz thick smears had a very low sensitivity (3.6%). CAA concentrations were higher in serum than in urine and were significantly correlated. There was a significant decrease in urine and serum CAA levels 3 and 6-weeks after treatment. The UCP-LF CAA assays revealed 33 and 28 S. mansoni -infected patients at the 3- and 6-week post-treatment follow-up, respectively. The UCP-LF CAA assays show high sensitivity for the diagnosis of S. mansoni in low-endemicity settings. It detects a considerably higher number of infections than microscopy, POC-CCA or PCR. Also it shows to be very useful for evaluating cure rates after treatment. Hence, the UCP-LF CAA assay is a robust and promising diagnostic approach in low-transmission settings. Objectives: To investigate, in elderly individuals registered at a secondary outpatient clinic, the prevalence of frailty and pre-frailty and to identify the discriminatory power of anthropometric measurements and nutritional risk in identifying these conditions.Design: Cross-sectional study with data extracted from medical records.Setting and participants: Elderly patients (60+ years) from a geriatric outpatient clinic, located in the southeast area of São Paulo, Brazil.Measurements: Frailty was assessed using five criteria proposed by Fried et al (2001), with some modifications. Nutritional risk was identified using Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA). Body weight and body height were measured and used to calculate the body mass index (BMI). The discriminatory power of these parameters for the identification of frailty was determined by Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) curvesResults: The final sample was composed of 254 patients, from which 31.1% were identified as frail and 53.5% as prefrail. The MNA indicated that 3.1% were malnourished and 35.4% were at risk of malnutrition. The BMI values 39.4% as overweight/obese and 19.9% as undernourished. As just the MNA revealed differences for frailty classification, only this parameter was investigated by ROC curve. The discriminatory power of the MNA for frailty presented a best cut-off point of ≤23.0 and the AUC was 0.812 (sensitivity=55.7; specificity=94.9), with a youden index of 0.5057 (95%CI= 0.3146-0.5946). MNA did not present sufficient discriminatory power to detect pre-frailty.Conclusion: The MNA was capable of indicating frailty, but not pre-frailty in this sample. Although rare, adrenocortical carcinoma is among the most common tumors found in children with Li-Fraumeni syndrome and Li-Fraumeni-like syndrome, associated with germ-line mutations in the TP53 gene. In southern Brazil, one form of Li-Fraumeni syndrome, associated with childhood adrenocortical carcinoma, is caused by a mutation in the R337H TP53 tetramerisation domain and is attributed to a familial founder effect. Adrenocortical carcinoma is considered an aggressive neoplasm, usually of poor prognosis and is generally unresponsive to systemic chemotherapy. Optimal treatment regimens remain to be established. We report the case of a young woman with metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma, who achieved stable disease with mitotane, cisplatin, doxorubicin, and etoposide as first-line therapy, but then had an objective response to oral metformin that lasted 9 months. The presence of the R337H TP53 mutation suggests a mechanism for the observed response to metformin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chewing impairment has been observed in elders with Alzheimer's disease ( AD); however, it is unknown whether oral rehabilitation can improve their masticatory function. This study evaluated the influence of new removable prostheses on chewing function of patients with AD. Participants using removable dentures were divided into two groups: patients with mild AD (77·2 ± 5·8 years, n = 16) and controls (76·0 ± 4·4, n = 16). All participants received general dental treatment and new total and/or partial removable prostheses. After 2 months of adaptation to the new dentures, chewing was evaluated by the following parameters: masticatory cycle time ( CT), cycle velocity ( CV), and opening ( OA) and closing mandibular angles ( CA), registered by a kinesiographic device. Maximum bite force ( MBF) was assessed using a strain sensor. Evaluations were performed at baseline and after insertion of the new prostheses. A mixed model ( α = 5%) was used for within- and between-subject analyses. After insertion of new prostheses, CT was reduced, and CV and MBF were increased in both groups ( P < 0·05). There were no changes in OA or CA ( P > 0·05). Compared to controls, elders with AD showed higher CT and reduced MBF and CV both at baseline and after insertion of new prostheses ( P < 0·05). However, OA and CA did not differ between groups ( P > 0·05). Insertion of new removable prostheses improved masticatory function in elders with and without AD, but patients with mild AD still had reduced chewing parameters compared to controls. Several studies reported that the timing of eating events has critical implications in the prevention of obesity, but dietary patterns regarding the time-of-day have not been explored in children. The aim of this study was to derive latent food patterns of daily eating events and to examine their associations with overweight/obesity among schoolchildren. A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted with 7–10-year-old Brazilian schoolchildren (n 1232) who completed the Previous Day Food Questionnaire, illustrated with twenty-one foods/beverages in six daily eating events. Latent class analysis was used to derive dietary patterns whose association with child weight status was evaluated by multivariate multinomial regression. Four mutually exclusive latent classes of dietary patterns were identified and labelled according to the time-of-day of eating events and food intake probability (FIP): (A) higher FIP only at lunch; (B) lower FIP at all eating events; (C) higher FIP at lunch, afternoon and evening snacks; (D) lower FIP at breakfast and at evening snack, higher FIP at other meals/snacks. The percentages of children within these classes were 32·3, 48·6, 15·1 and 4·0 %, respectively. After controlling for potential confounders, the mean probabilities of obesity for these classes were 6 % (95 % CI 3·0, 9·0), 13 % (95 % CI 9·0, 17·0), 12 % (95 % CI 6·0, 19) and 11 % (95 % CI 5·0, 17·0), in the same order. In conclusion, the children eating traditional lunch with rice and beans as the main meal of the day (class A) had the lowest obesity risk, thus reinforcing the importance of both the food type and the time-of-day of its intake for weight status. Due to an inadequate knowledge about threats to the sea turtle, we aimed to evaluate the helminth fauna of Chelonia mydas which had died on the southern coast of Espirito Santo, Brasil and described the associated tissue pathological lesions. Retrospective and prospective studies on turtle parasites were conducted and tissues samples were collected. 106 of 212 of sea turtles (50 %) were parasitized, and 47 of 106 of infected animals 43.0 % (47/106) were in poor health condition. Seven trematoda families covering 19 different helminths species were identified. Turtles were inhabited with one or more species of parasites, and there was no significant association between parasitism and weakness of the animals. The article presents a study about the prevalence of epitheliocystis disease in both freshwater and marine fishes such as Nile tilapia or Oreochromis niloticus in Brazil. It examines the inhabitants of the gram-negative bacteria that cause hypertrophy of the target host cells. It also notes that the bacteria have been characterized as endosymbiontic organisms in amoeba and ciliates that reduced gill surface area for gas exchange and osmoregulation.

- Vargeão Dome (southern Brazil) is a circular feature formed in lava flows of the Lower Cretaceous Serra Geral Formation and in sandstones of the Paraná Basin. Even though its impact origin was already proposed in the 1980s, little information about its geological and impact features is available in the literature. The structure has a rim-rim diameter of approximately 12 km and comprises several ring-like concentric features with multiple concentric lineaments. The presence of a central uplift is suggested by the occurrence of deformed sandstone strata of the Botucatu and Pirambóia formations. We present the morphological/structural characteristics of Vargeão Dome, characterize the different rock types that occur in its interior, mainly brecciated volcanic rocks (BVR) of the Serra Geral Formation, and discuss the deformation and shock features in the volcanic rocks and in sandstones. These features comprise shatter cones in sandstone and basalt, as well as planar microstructures in quartz. A geochemical comparison of the target rock equivalents from outside the structure with the shocked rocks from its interior shows that both the BVRs and the brecciated sandstone have a composition largely similar to that of the corresponding unshocked lithologies. No traces of meteoritic material have been found so far. The results confirm the impact origin of Vargeão Dome, making it one of the largest among the rare impact craters in basaltic targets known on Earth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Mantiqueira Province represents a series of supracrustal segments of the South-American counterpart formed during the Gondwana Supercontinent agglutination. In this crustal domain, the process of escape tectonics played a conspicuous role, generating important NE-N-S-trending lineaments. The oblique component of the motions of the colliding tectonic blocks defined the transpressional character of the main suture zones: Lancinha-Itariri, Cubatão-Arcádia-Areal, Serrinha-Rio Palmital in the Ribeira Belt and Sierra Ballena-Major Gercino in the Dom Feliciano Belt. The process as a whole lasted for ca. 60 Ma, since the initial collision phase until the lateral escape phase predominantly marked by dextral and subordinate sinistral transpressional shear zones. In the Dom Feliciano Belt, southern Brazil and Uruguay, transpressional event at 630-600 Ma is recognized and in the Ribeira Belt, despite less coevally, the transpressional event occurred between 590 and 560 Ma in its northern-central portion and between ca. 625 and 595 Ma in its central-southern portion. The kinematics of several shear zones with simultaneous movement in opposite directions at their terminations is explained by the sinuosity of these lineaments in relation to a predominantly continuous westward compression.
