The number of U.S. school librarians has greatly diminished despite advocacy efforts on the local and national level. This case study investigated the factors that led governing board members in a mid-size urban high school district to retain certified school librarian positions despite a major economic crisis. Data were collected through school district documents and interviews with the district superintendent, a governing board member, the director of finance, a school administrator, and a librarian. Using an organizational decision-making framework, the researcher constructed the following values-oriented themes contributing to the retention of librarians: employee involvement, transparency in communication, trust between district leadership and the governing board, a commitment to the district's core values, and the value placed on the school library program by the district's stakeholders. Findings indicated that practitioners can advocate on the basis of organizational factors that contribute to school librarian retention. Future research should investigate additional school districts' decision-making processes in the retention of school librarian positions. All locations and names used in this study are pseudonyms. Using a combination of marketing, Web 2.0 tools, videoconferencing, face-to-face instruction and site visits, a library presence including systematic information literacy instruction is embedded into multiple programs at sixteen sites in a growing college of education with nearly 6000 students and over 115 full-time faculty members. As the needs of the students and faculty evolve, the library program responds. This article describes the education library liaison program for Arizona State University's College of Teacher Education and Leadership, including both successes and challenges, within the context of university, college, and library change. The authors' purpose in this article is to interrogate the mediated and political discourses that emerged alongside the "Flores v. Arizona" case. The authors endeavor to offer another voice, framework and approach that may help sustain a continuous, paramount conversation concerning the educational rights of English language learners and the ways in which the public rationalizes appropriate state provisions for such students. Therein, the manuscript operationalizes the rationalities that appear across pro-"Flore"s data (which consists of public opinion rhetoric positioned in support of the plaintiff and therefore in favor of appropriate state support for English language learners). The analysis of this data lays bare the echoes of the discursive regime surrounding the "Flores" case, a regime which unmasks neo-liberal rationalities for supporting English language learners. For example, the findings indicate that neo-liberal rationalities such as commodification, competition, risk, security, insurance and entrepreneurialism dominate the discursive landscape and eclipse alternative ways of arguing in support of students' rights to equitable and appropriate education, including social justice, pluralism and democracy.

In today's knowledge economy, both high school and university educators must ensure that students are equipped with the proficiencies needed to transition from high school to college and, ultimately, from college to the workplace. As librarians at Arizona State University (ASU), the authors sought to develop a local program that would support this goal. The Collaboration and Connection project teams ASU Libraries, ASU's Writing Programs, and ASU's Academic Success programs with area high school English teachers and librarians. The authors' goal was simple: Provide a forum that allows high school and university educators to engage in a dialog about how best to prepare students for university-level research and writing. In their area, few opportunities exist for high school and university faculty and librarians to get together and talk about student success across the "grade 12-13 gap." The Collaboration and Connection project creates that opportunity.

Nothing to disclose. None. Common carotid intima-thickness (CIMT) is as a marker of arterial wall injury and arteriosclerosis. Healthy asymptomatic young and middle-aged individuals of the European-ancestry show mean CIMT of 610 + /-110μmmicrometers with a strong linear relation between age and CIMT. In the general population, an annual rate of change in mean common CIMT is estimated at 15μm (95% CI, 12 to 17), with a median standard deviation of 53. We sought to compare annual CIMT progression rates in 10 patients with severe hypercholesterolemia treated with lipoprotein apheresis with published annual CIMT progression estimates in age-comparable 1) healthy individuals based on the nomograms, 2) patients with elevated lipoprotein(a), and 3) familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). Patients (mean age 60+/-9 years, 70% female, 80% statin intolerant) were treated with the dextran sulfate adsorption apheresis system for primary and secondary atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) prevention every two weeks between 2005 and 2020 (mean duration, 10+/-4 years). To minimize intra-individual and inter-individual variability in CIMT assessment we used computerized algorithms with measurements performed by the same sonographer. The baseline mean CIMT was 850+/-170μm and maximum CIMT was 1040+/-220um across the age range of 46 to 70 years. The baseline median levels of total cholesterol were 317 (interquartile range (IQR), 262 to 361); LDL-C, 214 (133 to 253); HDL-C, 56 (44 to 68); triglycerides, 170 (121 to 215), lipoprotein(a), 26 (9 to 120), all in mg/dL. Acute effects of lipoprotein apheresis determined as a difference before and immediately after the procedure were estimated as a median of 72+/-8% and 75+/-7% reduction in the LDL-C and lipoprotein(a) levels, respectively. Regular treatment with lipoprotein apheresis resulted in average reduction in the mean CIMT of −40μm (IQR, −50 to 20). An annual CIMT progression rate was associated with the combined percentage reduction in the lipoprotein(a) (P=0.032) and LDL-C levels (P=0.029). Using the Bayesian Estimation Supersedes the t -Test (BEST) method, the annual rate of CIMT progression was compared to those reported in the literature (Table 1). Composite CIMT progression rates were slowed with lipoprotein apheresis. In this cohort of high-risk patients with poor statin tolerance, the use of CIMT surveillance was noted to increase compliance with long-term lipid-modifying therapies in the clinical setting. Background: Since the tragic events experienced on September 11, 2001, and other recent events such as the hurricane devastation in the southeastern parts of the country and the emergent H1N1season, the need for a competent public health workforce has become vitally important for securing and protecting the greater population. Objective: The primary objective of the study was to assess the training needs of the U.S. Mexico border states public health workforce. Methods: The Arizona Center for Public Health Preparedness of the Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at The University of Arizona implemented a border-wide needs assessment. The online survey was designed to assess and prioritize core public health competencies as well as bioterrorism, infectious disease, and border/binational training needs. Results: Approximately 80% of the respondents were employed by agencies that serve both rural and urban communities. Respondents listed 23 different functional roles that best describe their positions. Approximately 35% of the respondents were primarily employed by state health departments, twenty-seven percent (30%) of the survey participants reported working at the local level, and 19% indicated they worked in other government settings (e.g. community health centers and other non-governmental organizations). Of the 163 survey participants, a minority reported that they felt they were well prepared in the Core Bioterrorism competencies. The sections on Border Competency, Surveillance/Epidemiology, Communications/Media Relations and Cultural Responsiveness, did not generate a rating of 70% or greater on the importance level of survey participants. Conclusions: The study provided the opportunity to examine the issues of public health emergency preparedness within the framework of the border as a region addressing both unique needs and context. The most salient findings highlight the need to enhance the border competency skills of individuals whose roles include a special focus on emergency preparedness and response along the US-Mexico border. The author reports on the decision by the Mesa Public School (MPS) district in Mesa, Arizona, to eliminate all of their certified teacher-librarian positions over a three year period. MPS decided to eliminate the teacher-librarian positions in order to cut more than one million dollars from their budget. The reaction from citizens to the decision to lay-off the teacher-librarians is discussed, including a website that was started and a rally that was held in support of the teacher-librarians. Concerns regarding the impact that the layoffs will have with assistance students receive who take part in the International Baccalaureate Program at Westwood High School are mentioned.
