The Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is a species belonging to the Felidae family. In Argentina, tigers are currently only found in captivity. The longevity of individual animals in human‐controlled environments depends on proper management and practices that prioritize animal welfare. Regular veterinary care is essential to maintain optimal health conditions. Professionals must have a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy and physiology of tigers to effectively perform medical procedures and administer treatments. The study described in the text focuses on the trajectory and distribution of nerves in the pelvic limb of a Bengal tiger specimen, providing detailed dissection findings. The results revealed that the lumbosacral plexus is formed from the ventral rami of the LIV, LV, LVI, LVII, SI, SII and SIII nerves. Among the observations to highlight is the great development of the nerves N. cutaneus femoris lateralis and N. cutaneus femoris caudalis some differences were observed in the distribution of the N. femoralis and N. obturatorius; the N. ischiadicus, together with its division into the fibularis communis and tibialis nerves, showed the same configuration observed in other cats. Finally, it was observed that the nerves N. gluteus cranialis and N. gluteus caudalis also originated from the truncus lumbosacralis. The similarities and differences with studies carried out on other cats are relevant and provide anatomical data for medical procedures in the Bengal tiger. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numeral-incorporating roots in the numeral systems of Argentine Sign Language (LSA) and Catalan Sign Language (LSC), as well as the main features of the number systems of both languages, are described and compared. Informants discussed the use of numerals and roots in both languages (in most cases in natural contexts). Ten informants took part in the LSC data collection, and six in the LSA data collection. The data were corroborated by analyzing the videos available at www.youtube.com/confargsordos (for LSA) and by videos and books provided by the ILLESCAT Foundation (for LSC), as well as by previous research. A general inventory of roots in both languages and specifically of roots in both numerals systems was carried out. The role of roots in the formation of ordinals and cardinals and the main features of both number systems are described. The data suggest that numeral-incorporating roots in these number systems are formed only from numerals that do not derive from manual counting. This assumption is discussed, and further research about this point is emphasized. (Contains 4 tables, 23 figures and 2 notes.)

High illiteracy rates among the Argentine deaf population, even after long years of schooling, point to the need to revise certain approaches to deaf literacy, particularly in school settings. Qualitative change in deaf literacy requires the use of multiple conceptual tools if learners are to be able to tackle its complexity without reductionism or oversimplification. We define illiteracy as the absence of knowledge that involves but is not confined to graphic marks. It has been contended that the term may also apply to the difficulty one experiences in interpreting and using written materials in a variety of contexts, as well as the inability to take part in a literate culture despite having mastered its written symbols. Various studies have focused on different aspects of the "conquest of the written language" by deaf children and teenagers. Stressing their competence in and need for visual communication, this research therefore calls for the rejection of oralism in favor of the new ways of knowing made possible by today's essentially visual media and multimedia. In speaking of writing as a "language" or a mode of language, we mean far more than simply communicating. We are also referring to the making of meaning, to the interpretation of cultural practices, and to the reconstruction of the representations that define the family and culture in which every person is subjectively and socially embedded. Thus, literacy should be encouraged as a way to promote integration, and the processes that deaf children engage in to develop it deserve close attention. In order to account for the specific features of the cognitive and linguistic processes that deaf people utilize when dealing with written language, we draw on two perspectives that have revolutionized the traditional understanding of the factors at stake in deaf literacy. These are the socioanthropological view of deafness and the psycholinguistic theory of writing, which is based on psychogenetic studies. Written languages characterize the practices, representations, and discourses of the literate hearing societies in which deaf communities are embedded. Deaf children, to whom written language is a second language, are linguistically, communicatively, and pragmatically competent in their own natural sign language. We explore deaf children's literacy and the role that sign language plays in the reconstruction of written language. The present study is part of a wider research project that focuses on how these children develop literacy skills. The article concentrates on the cognitive and linguistic processes involved in understanding written Spanish. It also discusses the conceptual schemata of language learners for whom sound does not constitute a source of information. They are already competent, nevertheless, in their own natural language (i.e., sign language), which presupposes a distinctive type of linguistic organization. This article analyzes the interpretation of an illustrated text by deaf children who had had no oral training. The conclusions we draw are based on data obtained at the exploratory stage of this ongoing project. Water management is concerned with action on the ground. The goal of this paper is to conduct a multi-voiced decision model for water resource management in the urban area of Mar de Plata city, Province of Buenos Aires, through the use of a multicriteria analysis tool. Using the Criterium Decision Plus system, criteria and subcriteria were integrated into a multi-voiced decision model for the prioritization of zones for water resource management. The criteria chosen were Potable Water Supply, Sanitation, Water Quantity, Potential Sources of Contamination, Flood Protection, and Equity. The model identified four of the seven zones as 'high' to 'very high' priority. Priority scoring ranged from 0.15 to 0.543. Regarding the criteria, "Potable Water Supply," "Water Quantity," and "Flood Protection" were identified as the main ones contributing to the final model results. Contrasts the kinship terminology of Argentine Sign Language (LSA) with standard Spanish kinship terminology employed by nondeaf members in Argentine society. The combination of male and female terms and the frequency of reciprocal terms in LSA demonstrates that Argentine deaf society is culturally distinct in important ways from mainstream society. The deterioration of water quality worldwide is a serious environmental problem. Water managers still need operational tools to assess water issues and to inform water planning and decision-making. The aim of this article is to propose a 3-step methodological framework for assessing water pollution problems by combining a conceptual modeling tool (DPSIR) with the development of a quantitative model (Multi-Criteria Decision Model). This contribution provides a practical and flexible evaluation tool for conducting an integrated assessment of eutrophication and agrochemicals delivered to groundwater-dependent shallow lakes. It lays out action guidelines for decision-making environmental managers within the context of intermediate cities in developing countries. Forty-one indicators were identified to characterize the D-P-S-I compartments and for the multi-criteria model conceptualization. In this work, response options analysis consisted of evaluating and choosing water management instruments via a decision support tool. Two lake watersheds located in the peri-urban of two middle-size cities, in Argentina, were chosen to illustrate this methodological approach. The ensuing results allowed establishing a ranking of areas to prioritize, identifying a criteria and sub-criteria to focus on in order to set out action guidelines to minimize water pollution and eutrophication. These action guidelines are urgently needed in emerging countries, where financial, human resources and infrastructure are limited. The scarcity of such causes important implications regarding policy solutions for environmental issues. The implemented decision support tool in both lake watersheds provided a common basis for the understanding of the ongoing water pollution problems and a quantitative ranking (i.e., decision scores) for defining specific actions (responses) for human-induced stresses on such natural systems. The estimation of lake hydrological characteristics such as evaporation/inflow ratios and water residence time becomes necessary for understanding cycling and potential retention of natural and anthropogenic substances into the lake. The aim of this work was to estimate the evaporation loss and the water residence time of a temperate shallow lake based on the water isotope mass balance approach. One representative freshwater temperate shallow lake from the Argentinian Pampa Plain was selected. Groundwater, lake and stream samples (N = 56) were collected for δ2H-H2O and δ18O-H2O determinations. Moreover, water level fluctuations of the lake and its inflow stream were recorded with data loggers. Both the δ2H and δ18O relationship and d-excess of lake water indicated evaporation. Water isotopes and daily stream flow data recorded in the inflow stream evidenced groundwater contribution to Los Padres Stream. Monthly evaporation as a fraction of inflow estimations of the lake water indicated that about 20–25 ± 12% lake water was lost through lake surface evaporation and revealed that hydrologic balances were regulated mainly by changes in water inflow rather than evaporation. A mean residence time of 1.11 ± 0.65 year was also calculated. This lake hydrological information is relevant for the region and crucial to improve water management plans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In developing countries, conflict between the objectives of environmental policies and those focused on economic development, a low availability of human resources and infrastructure, and the lack of continuity and incentives, contribute to the inability to successfully implement environmental policies. Moreover, in these countries, population growth in the peri-urban areas has resulted in serious water pressures, poor water management, and severe non-point source pollution. The aim of this paper is to implement a procedure of aquifer pollution risk assessment for identifying priority areas in an urban-rural interface based on multi-criteria decision tools. In this sense, a multi-criteria decision model was designed, in terms of environmental and socio-economic criteria and sub-criteria relevant to water resource management, by using the software Criterium Decision Plus 4.0. This model was applied to the northwestern peri-urban area of Mar del Plata City, Argentina, which is embedded in the second most important fruit-horticultural belt of the country. Here, groundwater is the only source of water supply. The proposed decision model allowed establishing a ranking of priority areas for defining action guidelines in order to minimize the risk of pollution of the aquifer. Aquifer pollution hazard criterion mainly contributes to alternatives classified as very high priority whilst in the case of low and very low priority classes, social vulnerability criterion mostly influences the final results. The first alternatives will require an intervention in a short-term time horizon, and the last ones must be monitored in order to avoid their shift to a worse environmental condition. This work evaluates the factors affecting the presence of organochlorine pesticides in Pampeano aquifer in the Quequén Grande River watershed, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Eighteen sampling sites were selected in order to have representatives of different type of wells and types of soil. Among the analyzed compounds, endosulfan showed the highest concentrations (4.75 ng l− 1 mean), which could be related to use in the recent past. Others important pesticides groups detected were HCHs (1.1 ng l− 1 mean) and heptachlors (2.17 ng l− 1mean). The analysis of the results show that the thickness of the unsaturated zone is the main factor related to the concentrations of pesticides and there were no differences according to wells or soil types. Although agricultural use of most OCPs has been banned in Argentina from more than 30 years ago, their residues are still detected in groundwater of the region, indicating their high persistence. This study gives an account of the implementation of a decision support system as a logical framework for assessing lake pollution hazard. The use of this system is demonstrated with an example from two lake watersheds, each one with different land-use, soil and topographic characteristics and also management regulations for natural resource protection. Lake pollution hazard is assessed as a function of two primary topics: hydrologic and soil conditions. This model shows the state of each evaluated subwatershed with respect to its potential contribution to lake pollution hazard based mainly on easily measurable and commonly used parameters: drainage density, hydraulic gradient, water table depth, soil media, land-cover and topography. Mapped outputs from the logic model allowed the identification of several subwatersheds in each lake system as the main water resource protection areas. La Brava Lake Watershed results reasonably fit the natural conditions of the watershed, identifying those subwatersheds with a moderate to high drainage density, high hydraulic gradient and extensive agricultural activities. Regarding Los Padres Lake Watershed, moderate to high drainage density, a high to a very high hydraulic gradient, shallow water depth, silt-loam soil texture and intensive agricultural and residential lands, contributed to a high lake pollution hazard. Results highlighted differences between both freshwater systems, being Los Padres Lake Watershed a more vulnerable ecosystem, requiring decision maker's intervention based on accurate and up-to-date information. This paper gives an account of the implementation of hydrochemical and isotopic techniques to identify and explain the processes that govern solute exchange in two groundwater-dependent shallow lakes in the Southeastern Pampa Plain of Argentina. Water samples (lakes, streams, spring water and groundwater) for hydrochemical and stable isotopic determination were collected and the main physical-chemical parameters were measured. The combination of stable isotope data with hydrogeochemical techniques was used for the identification of sources and preferential recharge areas to these aquatic ecosystems which allowed the explanation of the lake water origin. The hydrochemical processes which explain Los Padres Lake water chemistry are evaporation from groundwater, CO input, calcite dissolution, Na release by Ca and Mg exchange, and sulfate reduction. The model that best aligns with La Brava Lake hydrochemical constraints includes: mixing, CO and calcite dissolution, cationic exchange with Na release and Mg adsorption, and to a lesser extent, Ca/Na exchange. This model suggests that the fractured aquifer contribution to this water body is greater than 50 %. An isotopic-specific fingerprint for each lake was identified, finding a higher evaporation rate for La Brava Lake compared to Los Padres Lake. Isotopic data demonstrate the importance of these shallow lakes as recharge areas to the regional aquifer, becoming areas of high groundwater vulnerability. The Tandilia Range System, considered in many hydrogeological studies as the impermeable bedrock of the Pampean aquifer, acts as a fissured aquifer in this area, contributing to low salinity waters and with a fingerprint similar to groundwater isotopic composition. This paper gives an account of the implementation of a decision support system for assessing aquifer pollution hazard and prioritizing subwatersheds for groundwater resources management in the southeastern Pampa plain of Argentina. The use of this system is demonstrated with an example from Dulce Stream Basin (1,000 km encompassing 27 subwatersheds), which has high level of agricultural activities and extensive available data regarding aquifer geology. In the logic model, aquifer pollution hazard is assessed as a function of two primary topics: groundwater and soil conditions. This logic model shows the state of each evaluated landscape with respect to aquifer pollution hazard based mainly on the parameters of the DRASTIC and GOD models. The decision model allows prioritizing subwatersheds for groundwater resources management according to three main criteria including farming activities, agrochemical application, and irrigation use. Stakeholder participation, through interviews, in combination with expert judgment was used to select and weight each criterion. The resulting subwatershed priority map, by combining the logic and decision models, allowed identifying five subwatersheds in the upper and middle basin as the main aquifer protection areas. The results reasonably fit the natural conditions of the basin, identifying those subwatersheds with shallow water depth, loam-loam silt texture soil media and pasture land cover in the middle basin, and others with intensive agricultural activity, coinciding with the natural recharge area to the aquifer system. The Pampa in Argentina is a large plain with a quite obvious dependence on agriculture, water availability and its quality. It is a sensitive environment due to weather changes and slope variations. Supplementary irrigation is a useful practice for compensating the production in the zone. However, potential negative impacts of this type of irrigation in salinization and sodification of soils are evident. Most conventional methodologies for assessing water irrigation quality have difficulties in their application in the region because they do not adjust to the defined assumptions for them. Consequently, a new GIS-based methodology integrating multiparametric data was proposed for evaluating and delineating groundwater suitability zones for irrigation purposes in flat areas. Hydrogeological surveys including water level measurements, groundwater samples for chemical analysis and electrical conductivity (EC) measurements were performed. The combination of EC, sodium adsorption ratio, residual sodium carbonate, slopes and hydraulic gradient parameters generated an irrigation water index (IWI). With the integration of the IWI 1 to 3 classes (categories of suitable waters for irrigation) and the aquifer thickness the restricted irrigation water index (RIWI) was obtained. The IWI′s index application showed that 61.3 % of the area has 'Very high' to 'Moderate' potential for irrigation, while the 31.4 % of it has unsuitable waters. Approximately, 46 % of the tested area has high suitability for irrigation and moderate groundwater availability. Fluoride pollution is a widespread problem in Argentina, as it is in many areas of the World. Former investigations have demonstrated that the dissolution of volcanic glass disseminated in the loess-like sediments is the main source of fluoride in the Argentine pampas. Nevertheless, fluoride distribution is erratic and the factors controlling it are not yet well-known. A large amount of hydrochemical data collected in the Quequen Grande river catchment is used in order to contribute to the understanding of fluoride distribution and mobility in groundwater in the Argentine pampas. The Quequen Grande river catchment is 10,000 km. It extends between two low hills ranges of Precambrian metamorphic rocks and sedimentary Paleozoic rocks, filled by a thick sequence of Cenozoic sediments, mainly silts and silt-clayed, with sand layers. These sediments form a multilayer phreatic aquifer, which is recharged from precipitation infiltration, discharging through streams directly into the sea. Fluoride concentration in surface water ( n = 353) ranges between 0 and 6.5 mg/l, with an average value of 2.14 mg/l. Groundwater concentration ( n = 135) is from 0 up to 5.7 mg/l, with an average of 1.84 mg/l. Considering the statistic distribution of fluoride, two groups of samples can be determined. A dominant group between 0 and 3 mg/l, with a mean value around 1.5 mg/l, corresponding to samples widely distributed in the catchment; and a second one group with fluoride contents between 3 and 6 mg/l, corresponding to a smaller area in the central-west border. Two different sources are proposed. Volcanic glass dissolution is responsible for dominant values in the catchment, while the weathering of biotite from the Paleozoic bedrock can be assumed to account for the higher concentrations in the second group. Abstract: The Dulce Creek Basin (1000 km2) is situated in the Buenos Aires''s Sate and flows into the Mar Chiquita lagoon, (MAB Biosphere Reserve – UNESCO). While land cover on the upper basin is dominated by field crops, the low basin is mostly occupied by livestock grazing systems. The increased use of inputs (agricultural intensification), and a high degree of riverside vegetation''s degradation in the grazing zone, represent an increasing pollution risk for surface water bodies and groundwater. The aim of this work was to find suitable driving factors for a dynamic land cover simulation model (Dyna-CLUE) since1997 to 2005 using logit regression models. Land cover change (Crop, Pasture, Grassland, and Others) was simulated using eleven driving factors accounting for geographic, climatic and soil and infrastructure features. We assessed multicolinearity from the Pearson correlation matrix, and only uncorrelated variables were applied in the logistic regression. Waterlogging, altitude, geomorphology and soil productivity were the main driving factors for the predictions of land cover dynamics, as selected from logistic models. The land-cover simulation model was run according to the actual trends of agricultural expansion. The accuracy of predictive models was tested using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the good fit showed by the Dyna-CLUE model to data, support its suitability for simulation of land cover dynamics of the Dulce Creek Basin. The expected trajectory of land cover according to current trends warns about a progressive decrease of grasslands cover, and the associated loss of their ecosystem services. Further simulations upon alternative scenarios can help land use planning for production and conservation objectives. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This article gives an account of the implementation of a stakeholder analysis framework at La Brava Wetland Basin, Argentina, in a common-pool resource (CPR) management context. Firstly, the context in which the stakeholder framework was implemented is described. Secondly, a four-step methodology is applied: (1) stakeholder identification, (2) stakeholder differentiation-categorization, (3) investigation of stakeholders' relationships, and (4) analysis of social-biophysical interdependencies. This methodology classifies stakeholders according to their level of influence on the system and their potential in the conservation of natural resources. The main influential stakeholders are La Brava Village residents and tourism-related entrepreneurs who are empowered to make the more important decisions within the planning process of the ecosystem. While these key players are seen as facilitators of change, there are other groups (residents of the inner basin and fishermen) which are seen mainly as key blockers. The applied methodology for the Stakeholder Analysis and the evaluation of social-biophysical interdependencies carried out in this article can be seen as an encouraging example for other experts in natural sciences to learn and use these methods developed in social sciences. Sociolinguistic literature in sign linguistics has characterized the deaf community as diglossic. My own research into the sociolinguistic patterns of the Argentine deaf community has always indicated that the same diglossic situation has been observed in this community. A deeper insight into the current linguistic situation of the deaf community has induced me to question the previous analysis, especially because since 1999 deaf people in my country have been struggling for recognition of Argentine Sign Language. Therefore, this paper, although merely tentative and as yet quite imperfect, puts forward a reinterpretation of linguistic community, a term much debated in the sociolinguistic literature. This paper aims to show that the linguistic situation of the Argentine deaf community is not diglossic as the sociolinguistic, political and symbolic values of both languages involved in their interaction show. Therefore, when Spanish and Argentine Sign Language are in contact is diglossia a valid concept for the sociolinguistic characterization of a historically marginalized monolingual community as are the deaf in Argentina? Is not diglossia another term functionally at the service of the dominant ideology in order to present deaf people and their sign language as a different exotic community, a fact obviously leading to discrimination? Abstract  The region known as Pampa Plain, in Argentina, is a vast area characterized by slopes of less than 0.05%. The surface sediment is silty sand, mainly Aeolian, referred to as Pampean Loess, which is a phreatic aquifer unit of utmost importance for the water supply of the region. On account of the slight gradient, hydrogeological analyses using only hydraulic measurements are difficult to perform, often leading to confusing results. Thus, the study presented relies on hydrochemical modeling and isotopic determinations as well. The study area comprises three catchments in the inter-mountainous area corresponding to El Moro, Tamangueyú and Seco creeks, and covering 2,570 km2 in the province of Buenos Aires. Measurements of piezometric levels and samples of groundwater, surface water and rainwater were carried out between January and March 2005. Major ion results were analyzed by means of hydrochemical graphs and hydrogeochemical modelling using NETPATH. The resulting data show that it is possible to identify local changes in recharge, flow direction and stream/groundwater relationship by using hydrochemical and isotopic information, which may become a useful and more precise tool for the study of particularly flat landscapes. Groundwater contamination was studied in a rural setting of the Upper Pantanoso Stream Basin (UPSB) in the southeast of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, where potential contaminant sources include inorganic fertilizer. Nitrate–N concentrations, greater than accepted level for safe drinking-water of 10 mg l−1 were present in 36% of sampled wells and 67% of samples had nitrate concentrations exceeding the background level of 5 mg l−1. Temporal fluctuation of nitrate concentrations in the groundwater was attributed to seasonal fluctuations in recharge and plant growth. Nitrate concentration was measured in deep soil profiles to determine the extent of leaching. Nitrate accumulation in the unsaturated zone of a soil cropped with potatoes was three times higher than the baseline N concentration found in the pasture. The greatest nitrate concentration in the soil profile occurred under irrigated corn where excessive nitrogen was applied. These results show that high fertilization rates and irrigation lead to increased hazards of groundwater pollution. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study presents a program for risk management in the contamination of groundwater resulting from leachate in landfills at Mar del Plata (Argentina). The program includes prediction, prevention, monitory observation and mitigation as actions that must be taken prior to, during, and after contamination occurs. This routine aids in the identification of weak points and failures of the program for those who are in charge of making decisions, and will allow better use of limited financial and technical resources based on planning, thus minimizing disconnected determinations. Results of the prediction stage were confirmed through monitoring. The presence of a plume of contamination more than 100 m from the landfill was shown, thus proving that implementation of a monitoring plan to follow the development of the contaminated plume must be implemented, particularly in populated areas which depend on residential wells for their water supply. This paper provides both a theoretical view of the pertinence of considering traditional sociolinguistics categories as a means for better understanding natural sign languages and updated information about pedagogical implications within deaf communities in Argentina and Uruguay, users of the Iengua de señas argentinas (LSA, Argentinian sign language) and of the Iengua de señas uruguaya (LSU, Uruguayan sign language), respectively. The aim of this study was to contribute to the understanding of the hydrogeological system of the Argentine Patagonia Extra-Andina region, focused on the Atlantic coastal area at 46° south latitude. The hydrogeochemical aspects of this aquifer system were taken into consideration for this purpose. The database includes 193 chemical analyses of major ions obtained through standard laboratory methods. A statistical analysis of the data, as well as the realization of hydrochemical models using PHREEQC software, was performed. The regional groundwater flows from west to east, with the recharge water being a sodium–chloride–bicarbonate type, and the discharge of water is typified as a sodium–sulfate–chloride type. The hydrogeochemical evolution of the aquifer shows a general augmentation of salinity and major ions in the groundwater-flow path, except for HCO3−. Inverse hydrochemical modeling showed that gypsum dissolution with calcite precipitation, Ca2+/Na+ and Mg2+/Na+ ionic exchange, and dedolomitization are the main processes along the groundwater flow pathway. Solanum glaucophyllum Desf. is a calcinogenic plant responsible for enzootic calcinosis that affects ruminants and causes alterations in bone and cartilaginous tissues, among others. It is believed that changes in cartilage tissue, with reduced bone growth, are due to hypercalcitoninism, caused by excess vitamin D. However, we hypothesized that S. glaucophyllum Desf. can act directly on chondrocytes and therefore, chondrocyte cultures from the epiphysis of the long bones of newborn rats were used as a model to elucidate the direct effects of S. glaucophyllum Desf. on bone growth. Plant samples were collected from Cañuelas, Argentina. An aliquot of the plant extract was used to quantify vitamin D (1,25(OH)2D3). The effects of the three concentrations of the plant extract were tested in cultures of chondrocytes extracted from the epiphyses of the long bones of 32 three-day-old Wistar rats. A control group (without extract), and three groups treated with different concentrations of plant extract were formed: group 1 (100 μL/L); group 2 (1 mL/L), and group 3 (5 mL/L), containing respectively 1 × 10−9 M, 1 × 10−8 M, and 5 × 10−8 M of 1,25(OH)2D3. After 7, 14, and 21 days of culture, MTT assay for cell viability, alkaline phosphatase activity, and quantification of the percentage of areas with glycosaminoglycans (GAG) stained with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) were performed. On day 7, all chondrocytes in group 3, that is, those with the highest concentration of plant extract, died. On days 14 and 21, groups 1 and 2 showed a significant reduction in chondrocyte viability compared to the control. At 7, 14, and 21 days, groups 1 and 2 showed significantly lower alkaline phosphatase activity than the control. On day 21, group 2 showed a significant reduction in areas with PAS + GAGs. There were no significant differences between the groups in the expression of gene transcripts for Sox9, Col2, ColX, and aggrecan. The S. glaucophyllum Desf. extract directly affected growing rat chondrocytes by reducing viability, alkaline phosphatase activity, and GAG synthesis without altering the expression of gene transcripts for Sox9, Col2, ColX, and aggrecan , which may be one of the mechanisms by which there is a reduction in bone growth in animals intoxicated by the plant. The Quequén Grande river basin is representative of the farming systems from the Pampas region. The aquifer is the main source of water supply for all uses, which highlights the importance to study the mobility of contaminants through the soil to the saturated zone. The aim of this study was to obtain hydraulic parameters of different soil types in the region according to land use (agricultural and natural) under saturated conditions. Two study areas were selected close to the cities La Dulce (Azul Series Soil) and Lobería (Semillero Buck Series Soil), as representatives of the dominant soil types in this area. The columns were eluted with an aqueous solution containing chloride ions and the progressive increase was measured at the end of the column. From the experimental data the breakthrough curve was adjusted using MATLAB software while dispersivity and porosity values were determined from modeled data. These parameters did not differ significantly in Lobería, so it is assumed that tillage does not produce significant changes in the soil profile. Conversely, in La Dulce land use affects the hydraulic properties of the soil leading to lower porosity and higher dispersivity values in soils under tillage use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The prognostic significance of angiogenesis in some canine tumours has been investigated, but little is known about its relevance in canine melanocytic tumours (MTs). The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of angiogenesis in canine MTs. A total of 36 cutaneous melanocytomas (benign MTs), 40 cutaneous melanomas (malignant MTs) and 43 oral melanomas were studied. Survival data were available for a subset of 59 cases. Microvessel density (MVD) and endothelial area (EA) were determined by immunolabelling using an antibody specific for von Willebrand factor (vWF). Mean MVD (expressed as the number of microvessels per mm(2)) was 129 ± 14 in melanocytomas, 191 ± 16 in cutaneous melanomas and 208 ± 16 in oral melanomas. Mean EA (expressed as the percentage of the total area) was 1.5 ± 0.14 in melanocytomas, 2.6 ± 0.2 in cutaneous melanomas and 2.4 ± 0.3 in oral melanomas. The differences in MVD and EA between melanocytomas and melanomas were significant (P = 0.001 and P = 0.003, respectively). MVD and EA were significantly correlated between cutaneous and oral MTs (r = 0.54; P <0.001 and r = 0.63; P <0.001, respectively). MVD and EA were not related to survival in cutaneous and oral MTs. Solanum glaucophyllum (Sg) (synonym S. malacoxylon) is a plant toxic to cattle due to its high levels of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 as glycoside derivatives. Sg causes a disease characterized by wasting and calcification of soft tissues. The effects of vitamin D are not only important in calcium homeostasis, but also in immune regulation, cell growth and cell differentiation. Skin samples in Sg-intoxicated and control heifers were studied histologically. Cellular differentiation and proliferation were analysed by immunohistochemical expression of cytokeratins, involucrin and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). The results were obtained by image processing and analysis and were statistically evaluated. Sg-intoxicated cattle showed atrophy of epidermis and severe involution of hair follicles and of sebaceous and sweat glands. As judged by PCNA expression, cellular proliferation was reduced, even though the reduction was not statistically significant. The analysed markers of differentiation, e.g. involucrin and cytokeratins 10 and 11, changed in relation to Sg-poisoning. The possible pathogenesis of the skin lesions is discussed.
