Hyperlinks are a powerful tool for journalists and their readers. Diving deep into the context of an article is just a click away. But hyperlinks are a double-edged sword; for all of the internet’s boundlessness, what’s found on the web can also be modified, moved, or entirely disappeared. This often-irreversible decay of web content is commonly known as linkrot. It comes with a similar problem of content drift, or the often-unannounced changes––retractions, additions, replacement––to the content at a particular URL. Our team of researchers at Harvard Law School has undertaken a project to gain insight into the extent and characteristics of journalistic linkrot and content drift. We examined hyperlinks in New York Times articles starting with the launch of the Times website in 1996 up through mid-2019, developed on the basis of a dataset provided to us by the Times. We focus on the Times not because it is an influential publication whose archives are often used to help form a historical record. Rather, the substantial linkrot and content drift we find here across the New York Times corpus accurately reflects the inherent difficulties of long-term linking to pieces of a volatile web. Results show a near linear increase of linkrot over time, with interesting patterns emerging within certain sections of the paper or across top level domains. Over half of articles containing at least one URL also contained a dead link. Additionally, of the ostensibly “healthy” links existing in articles, a hand review revealed additional erosion to citations via content drift.

Artificial intelligence is a buzz word and even more when its accomplishments have challenged our intelligence. However, what is intelligence? Is there a consensus in its meaning for researchers and professionals? Is it just a sales word? What does it mean in practical terms? To answer these questions, we followed a systemic review of literature in most cited papers about intelligent systems in the Internet of Things (IoT) and discovered that only 58% were intelligent as we defined: “Intelligent Systems are systems conformed by algorithms that are programmed using some machine learning techniques and that can learn from data and perform tasks with a superior performance”. The rest 42% were just traditional systems with hardware or software enhancements.

This study aims to explore the connections between news and blogs based on the co-mention of research papers. This approach attempts to generate several network graphs that show the structural topology of blogs and news media, stressing possible differences between blogs and news when they come to co-mention research publications. 3,810 blogs and 3,387 news outlets that cite 100,529 research articles were displayed in network graphs using citation coupling. Country, language and thematic category were added to each medium. The findings show that the network of blogs and news is characterized by scale-free properties. The news network is highly centralized by general-interest news outlets from English-speaking countries, while the blogs network depicts a less centralized and low-density network, shaped by well-defined thematic clusters that rest on prestigious specialized hubs. The study concludes that these structures have important implications for the media impact of scholarly publications. In the case of news, the highly centralized model on general-interest news outlets acts as echo chambers amplifying the attention of publications. In the case of blog, the impact is less and would be borne by specialized blogs in specific thematic areas.

Why are scientific ideas disseminated via "papers"? Is a paper the best way to share and publish research results today? The format and function of research communication has not changed much in the last 400 years. Take any paper published this week, download it, and compare it to a digitized version of a paper from the 1600s. The two papers may differ in page layout, color, and typeface, but they are essentially identical in format - a collection of text and figures. Indeed, the fact that we refer to the mainstream outlet of research communication as "paper" speaks volume of its boundness to print.While the published format has not changed in the last 400 years, the change in published content is astronomical: a proclamation of the success of science. The discovery of molecular structure of DNA \cite{WATSON_1953}, penicillin \cite{Fleming1980}, and the formulation of general relativity \cite{Einstein_1916} are some of the biggest and most splendid scientific discoveries of all time. They were all published in a two-dimensional paper format. Even more recently, the groundbreaking discovery of gravitational waves, which earned the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics to the leads of the LIGO collaboration, was published with a traditional paper format \cite{Abbott_2016}. LIGO's groundbreaking was certainly not analyzed on a 2D piece of paper.So, how is it possible that scientists produce and write cutting-edge "21st-century research" and still publish it in a "17th-century format"? \cite{obsolete,Pepe}Obviously, the paper format, being so enduring and persistent, has served science well. But things have changed in the last three decades. The recent explosion of content digitalization, growing internet speed and connectivity, and reliance on data, code, and computational power are leading to an unprecedented and irreversible path to changing the way we publish and disseminate research ideas. A Gutenberg-style revolution in scholarly communication is upon us, and we believe it is being pioneered by the Open Science movement. The Open Science initiative aims to make scientific research and its dissemination accessible, reproducible, and transparent. In addition to encouraging publication of research as Open Access as early as possible (the availability of preprints in subject-based repositories has moved beyond the realm of physics), for many computational domains Open Science translates into making code and data available to everyone, and into practicing "open notebook" science. In other words: readers and reviewers must be able to understand how the authors produced the computational results, which parameters were used for the analysis, and how manipulations to these parameters affect the results. Increasingly, journals and funding agencies are mandating that researchers share their code and data when reporting on computational results based on code and data. However, even when data and code are provided by authors, and published, they are oftentimes relegated to Supplementary Information or to entirely separate platforms, disconnected from the published "full text". Since code, data, and text are not linked on a deep level, readers and reviewers are faced with barriers that hinder their ability to understand and retrace how the authors achieved a specific result. In addition, while data and code may be available in repositories external to the corresponding article \cite{Antoniol_2002}, it takes readers and reviewers considerable effort to verify the software and re-run analyses with, say, changed parameters.The idea of a multimedia, multi-dimensional, scholarly publication that defies the limitations of the 2-dimensional paper format is not new. The publication history of the first detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO collaboration is an example of how much this is needed in scientific publishing. The discovery was reported in a series of traditional articles \cite{Abbott_2016}\cite{Abbott_2016a} but with an associated and externally hosted supplemental Jupyter notebook \cite{losc-tutoriallosc_event_tutorialmaster}. The notebook allows readers to run and tweak the code, change parameters to alter the analysis, and, in its section dedicated to the signal processing of the gravitational waves into sound, it even allows readers to play the bloop of two black holes colliding. Yet, the notebook and the multimedia elements had to reside outside the article. Why?

According to the Canadian Science Publishing, there are approximately 2.5 million scientific papers published each year. The huge volume of publications can be contributed to a substantial increase in the total number of academic journals, including the increasing number of predatory or fake scientific journals, which yield high volumes of poor-quality research work. The effect of this scenario is that there is an obsolete jungle of journals to flip through in searching for high-quality and relevant references for researchers, ranging from the ones who simply look for citations to cite or latest development and knowledge in a specific scientific area of study. Querying existing web search engines and research paper archived websites is not the solution to the problem, since they are m-equipped to suggest high quality publications to meet the users’ information needs. In solving this problem, we propose an elegant research paper recommender, which is unique compared with existing ones, since besides considering the topics and contents of related publications, it also examines the authority and popularity of each publication to ensure its quality. Conducted empirical study shows that our recommender outperforms existing research paper recommenders and contributes to the design of searching relevant publications.

Linking to code repositories, such as on GitHub, in scientific papers becomes increasingly common in the field of computer science. The actual quality and usage of these repositories are, however, to a large degree unknown so far. In this paper, we present for the first time a thorough analysis of all GitHub code repositories linked in scientific papers using the Microsoft Academic Graph as a data source. We analyze the repositories and their associated papers with respect to various dimensions. We observe that the number of stars and forks, respectively, over all repositories follows a power-law distribution. In the majority of cases, only one person from the authors is contributing to the repository. The GitHub manuals are mostly kept rather short with few sentences. The source code is mostly provided in Python. The papers containing the repository URLs as well as the papers' authors are typically from the AI field.

Nowadays, recommendation systems play an indispensable role in many fields, including e-commerce, finance, economy, and gaming. There is emerging research on publication venue recommendation systems to support researchers when submitting their scientific work. Several publishers such as IEEE, Springer, and Elsevier have implemented their submission recommendation systems only to help researchers choose appropriate conferences or journals for submission. In this work, we present a demo framework to construct an effective recommendation system for paper submission. With the input data (the title, the abstract, and the list of possible keywords) of a given manuscript, the system recommends the list of top relevant journals or conferences to authors. By using state-of-the-art techniques in natural language understanding, we combine the features extracted with other useful handcrafted features. We utilize deep learning models to build an efficient recommendation engine for the proposed system. Finally, we present the User Interface (UI) and the architecture of our paper submission recommendation system for later usage by researchers.

Traceability between published scientific breakthroughs and their implementation is essential, especially in the case of open-source scientific software which implements bleeding-edge science in its code. However, aligning the link between GitHub repositories and academic papers can prove difficult, and the current practice of establishing and maintaining such links remains unknown. This paper investigates the role of academic paper references contained in these repositories. We conduct a large-scale study of 20 thousand GitHub repositories that make references to academic papers. We use a mixed-methods approach to identify public access, traceability and evolutionary aspects of the links. Although referencing a paper is not typical, we find that a vast majority of referenced academic papers are public access. These repositories tend to be affiliated with academic communities. More than half of the papers do not link back to any repository. We find that academic papers from top-tier SE venues are not likely to reference a repository, but when they do, they usually link to a GitHub software repository. In a network of arXiv papers and referenced repositories, we find that the most referenced papers are (i) highly-cited in academia and (ii) are referenced by repositories written in different programming languages., 28 pages

Exam period can be a stressful time for students, and having examples of past papers to help prepare for the tests can be extremely helpful. It is possible that past exams are already shared on your campus—by professors in their specific courses, via student unions or groups, or between individual students. In this article, we will go over the workflows and infrastructure to support systematically collecting, providing access to, and managing a repository of past exam papers. We will discuss platform-agnostic considerations of opt-in vs opt-out submission, access restriction, discovery, retention schedules, and more. Finally, we will share the University of Toronto set up, including a dedicated instance of DSpace, batch metadata creation and ingest scripts, and our submission and retention workflows that take into account the varying needs of stakeholders across our three campuses.

COVID-19 is one of the most important topic these days, specifically on search engines and news. While fake news are easily shared, scientific papers are reliable sources where information can be extracted. With about 24,000 scientific publications on COVID-19 and related research on PUBMED, automatic computer-assisted analysis is required. In this paper, we develop two methodologies to get insights on specific sub-topics of interest and latest research sub-topics. They rely on natural language processing and graph-based visualizations. Nowadays web users are vulnerable to various cyber-attacks, among these attacks we find phishing. Phishing is a social engineering cyberattack, which targets naive online users tricking into revealing sensitive information such as username, password, social security number or credit card number, etc, based on imitating legitimate websites or sending a malicious URL in an email to deceive users. Several anti-phishing solutions have been developed such as black/whitelist, visual similarity, machine learning methods ... etc, but phishing attacks keep on growing, which has made phishing detection a primary concern of developers. In this paper, we present a taxonomy of an anti-phishing solutions. The classification helps in understanding various anti-phishing approaches and algorithms developed for phishing detection.

The National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is envisioned as a national educational asset to enable 24x7 learning for learners of all ages and disciplines. It indexes research papers from various publishers, but the full text is often access-restricted and therefore, not freely available to users of NDLI. However, full texts of many papers are available in institutional digital repositories and preprint servers. We have developed a browser extension Illumine that allows NDLI users to automatically search the web and retrieve full texts of papers whenever they are available. We describe the design of the tool and report experiments done on a corpus of papers indexed in NDLI. The tool is freely available to all NDLI users.

Out of East Asian languages which do not use the Latin alphabet, Japanese is a very complicated writing system that uses “kanji,” which are ideograms, and “kana,” which are phonetic characters. Most of the Japanese papers published so far using Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) are science, technology, and medicine fields adapting horizontal writing systems, which are structurally consistent with English papers. Most of them only replace Latin letters with Japanese characters. In this presentation, we suggested method of presenting vertically oriented Japanese humanities articles in JATS XML. For vertical description of Chinese numeric, we would like to propose the introduction of an element which specifies description direction. Alternatively, could be used as a hidden command when creating a document. We propose the following notation in the part of the number that can be converted: 六五. Chinese numeric 六五 is a Arabic numeric 65. With this, it is shown that 六五 of Chinese numerals can be converted to 65 in Arabic numerals. For vertical text description with JATS, we would like to suggest adding @ writing-mode as an attribute to :. Furthermore, note and references should be differentiated for example, between a and a in the future. As Kanji are ideograms, there are variations that cannot be expressed with UTF-8. If these difficult Kanji are included in the JATS text, it will be necessary to decide on their description method. For the propagation of use of JATS XML for non-Latin characters articles, the structure of the document for example, vertical description, and special presentation should be considered more widely.

In recent years more and more reviews have been published, and journal editors aggressively woo authors to submit such scripts. What are the reasons? One is that the flood of original scientific papers is overwhelming. Many researchers feel overburdened to read all original papers they wish to read, in particular, papers on the edge of the own research field. This generates a demand for good reviews from the side of researchers. The motivation for publishers and authors of reviews, however, is not solely to serve the needs of researchers. Often reviews get cited more frequently than original research articles. This is good for the impact factor of the publishing journal, and doubly beneficial for the review authors. However, reviews also have underbellies. The most obvious one is if they are cited without the remark “for review,” then readers unfamiliar with details of the topic may believe the review author did the corresponding original research. This comes close to scientific misconduct. Even if cited as “for review,” the honor (and citation!) is lost for the authors of the original work which actually deserved the citation. An embarrassing claim by some journals is to restrict citations within review papers to very recent time periods, neglecting that not all essential contributions to scientific progress were done during the last 5 years. Last, but not least, the increasing number of reviews generates a similar problem as original papers do, namely: what to read and what to cite? This effect is then amplified as many reviews on the same topic may appear nearly at the same time, due to the competition of journals for review papers. As a consequence, many reviews are neither of high quality nor sufficiently novel. What are the hallmarks of a good review? In my opinion, there are two classes of useful reviews: (i) comprehensive and well-ordered literature surveys and (ii) (even better) surveys providing, in addition, novel aspects and views resulting from the synopsis of the original papers within a field. Reviews that do not meet such criteria are arguably not worth publishing (but can hardly be rejected if invited). Thus, I encourage potential review authors not to take the bait simply to have one more (hopefully well-cited) paper, if they do not feel certain they can meet the criteria for a good review, or if they are aware of a similar paper recently published or in press. This might be a way to avoid contamination of scientific literature with less valuable review papers and reduce the uncertainty of researchers regarding which of the many similar reviews to read and to cite in the own papers. In summary, my recommendation is to write a review only if you feel your review could add significance to the original papers published in the field of interest.

Apps in the FINANCE category constitute approximately 2% of the 2,000,000 apps in the Google Play Store. These apps handle extremely sensitive data, such as online banking credentials, budgets, salaries, investments and the like. Although apps are automatically vetted for malicious activity before being admitted to the Google Play Store, it remains unclear whether app developers themselves check their apps for vulnerabilities before submitting them to be published. Additionally, it is not known how financial apps compare to other apps in terms of dangerous permission usage or how they evolve as they are updated. We analyse 10,400 apps to understand how apps in general and financial apps in particular have evolved over the past two years in terms of dangerous permission usage and the vulnerabilities they contain. Worryingly, we discover that both financial and non-financial apps are getting more vulnerable over time. Moreover, we discover that while financial apps tend to have less vulnerabilities, the rate of increase in vulnerabilities in financial apps is three times as much as that of other apps.

Purpose Although many interventional approaches have been proposed to address the apparent gap between novices and experts for literature review (LR) search tasks, there have been very few approaches proposed for manuscript preparation (MP) related tasks. The purpose of this paper is to describe a task and an incumbent technique for shortlisting important and unique papers from the reading list (RL) of researchers, meant for citation in a manuscript. Design/methodology/approach A user evaluation study was conducted on the prototype system which was built for supporting the shortlisting papers (SP) task along with two other LR search tasks. A total of 119 researchers who had experience in authoring research papers participated in this study. An online questionnaire was provided to the participants for evaluating the task. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed on the collected evaluation data. Findings Graduate research students prefer this task more than research and academic staff. The evaluation measures relevance, usefulness and certainty were identified as predictors for the output quality measure “good list”. The shortlisting feature and information cues were the preferred aspects while limited data set and rote steps in the study were ascertained as critical aspects from the qualitative feedback of the participants. Originality/value Findings point out that researchers are clearly interested in this novel task of SP from the final RL prepared during LR. This has implications for digital library, academic databases and reference management software where this task can be included to benefit researchers at the manuscript preparatory stage of the research lifecycle.

In order to assist researchers in addressing time constraint and low relevance in using scientific articles, an automatic tailored multi-paper summarization (TMPS) is proposed. In this paper, we extend Teufel’s tailored summary to deal with multi-papers and more flexible representation of user information needs. Our TMPS extracts Rhetorical Document Profile (RDP) from each paper and presents a summary based on user information needs. Building Plan Language (BPLAN) is introduced as a formalization of Teufel’s building plan and used to represent summary specification, which is more flexible representation user information needs. Surface repair is embedded within the BPLAN for improving the readability of extractive summary. Our experiment shows that the average performance of RDP extraction module is 94.46%, which promises high quality of extracts for summary composition. Generality evaluation shows that our BPLAN is flexible enough in composing various forms of summary. Subjective evaluation provides evidence that surface repair operators can improve the resulting summary readability.

Like a lot of movies are being made and their trailer videos are being uploaded on the internet and there are different types of algorithms and models that are used in detecting the genre of the movie genre. Here we have tried to implement the model and compare it with other models and suggest which model is better to implement. In most of the paper, the common genre which was used to detect were drama, action, thriller, and horror. But according to IMDb, there are 28 genres of videos. So still, there is a long way to go in this field.

Audio and audiovisual archives are at the crossroads of different fields of knowledge, yet they require common solutions for both their long-term preservation and their description, availability, use and reuse. Archivio Vi.Vo. is an Italian project financed by the Region of Tuscany, aiming to: (i) explore methods for long-term preservation and secure access to oral sources, and (ii) develop an infrastructure under the CLARIN-IT umbrella offering several services for scholars from different domains interested in oral sources. This paper describes the project’s infrastructure and its methodology through a case study on Caterina Bueno’s audio archive.

Mining is a technique of extracting actionable information from the big pile of data. This paper surveys and compares the various web mining techniques which is an emerging field of data mining.

We present an open-source online dictionary editing system, Ve′rdd, that offers a chance to re-evaluate and edit grassroots dictionaries that have been exposed to multiple amateur editors. The idea is to incorporate community activities into a state-of-the-art finite-state language description of a seriously endangered minority language, Skolt Sami. Problems involve getting the community to take part in things above the pencil-and-paper level. At times, it seems that the native speakers and the dictionary oriented are lacking technical understanding to utilize the infrastructures which might make their work more meaningful in the future, i.e. multiple reuse of all of their input. Therefore, our system integrates with the existing tools and infrastructures for Uralic language masking the technical complexities behind a user-friendly UI.

In this demo paper, we describe a Multi Agent System (MAS) application for monitoring and evaluation of the ethical behavior of customer service agents in an online chat point w.r.t their institution/company’s codes of ethics and conduct. This MAS is realized using the state-of-the-art JaCaMo framework, and can be practically demonstrated to an audience.

During the past decade or so, knowledge graphs have stealthily made way into our daily lives, whether through voice assistants (the likes of Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri), spontaneous search results or customized personal shopping experiences through online stores recommenders. Today, we are surrounded and constantly interacting with knowledge graphs on a regular basis. The scope and impact of knowledge graphs and underlying graph databases are still a mystery to people. Considering its smooth entry into our lives, most of us are unaware of how dependent we actually are on the technology. In this paper, we have shown the working of the Google knowledge graph and how the knowledge graph works as the most effective recommendation system. We have discussed how it finds its way through daily life in various fields like Banking, Social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Netflix), Food application (Uber Eats) and the Healthcare sector.

Official university resources for students have been grossly outpaced by the technological expectations of incoming generations, often being supplemented with third-party services to provide desired functionality. Enrollment services are a common example of this, typically lacking any means to view course feedback and evaluations. In response, students use external review sites such as RateMyProfessors (RMP) for this information, manually searching for and assessing each professor’s feedback for every course they consider. Integration of these reviews into the student portal would be a substantial optimization, but the closed-source nature of the sites prevents direct innovation from outside developers. To solve this, we created a browser extension for the California State University San Marcos student site capable of injecting RMP rating data directly alongside existing course information. The resulting product allows for inline availability of the requested content without it needing to manually fetched for each professor, greatly improving convenience of access and enabling more informed decision-making.

Computers and other digital communication media have replaced paper and pencil from the writer’s desk. This development has confronted special collections with a problem, as digital papers are difficult to process using established digital preservation strategies, because of their individual and unique nature. According to the proposal suggested in this paper, the creators should instead be involved in the preservation process, and special collections should integrate pre-custodial forms of curation within their range of tasks. The article outlines the use of a cloud architecture as a suitable instrument for accomplishing this task. The benefits and the prospects for such a collection cloud are exposed and discussed.

This paper reports on a study evaluating the value of a documentary as a key medium to communicate design research. We present information from the evaluation of a second screen application using video as well as a scientific paper, in order to assess how the efficacy and usefulness of using such a documentary for science communication is perceived when compared to a scientific paper. Techniques of a method called Design Documentary, developed to inspire design research teams through video, combined with science journalism were the basis of the production. Twelve researchers and students were shown the documentary and asked to read the paper in counter-balanced order. Our qualitative results show that the documentary as a complementary means of communication can bring benefits to research communication, since it delivers information the paper cannot provide. However, the fact the video is not suited for peer review might restrict its place when compared to the paper. Web of Things (WoT) is the most promising application model of Internet of Things (IoT). Current IoT systems urgently need extendibility and loose coupling, which are easily provided by WoT. However, some concerns about WoT security have been raised by academic researchers as well as industrial engineers. This paper provides a review of WoT literature especially on security issues. Moreover, this paper proposes an architecture that regards smart gateways as ideal devices to achieve WoT security. Smart gateways are classified into five types, and security functions are suggested for each type.

This paper proposes the concept and the technology of social networking federation as a paradigm where information on various social network systems can be seamlessly integrated in order to provide users a uniform and semantic view of their social connections. Such a uniformly fused social network provides a single point of access where all information with respect to one's social networks can be queried and reasoned about. The goal of the research is to establish a foundation of integrating and assimilating information within multiple social network systems. We designed a reference model of social networking federation system in this paper, as well as some prototype application to demonstrate its paradigm. We believe our work would provide a novel vision of future online social network.

Background To sustain the critical progress made, prioritization and a multidisciplinary approach to malaria research remain important to the national malaria control program in Benin. To document the structure of the malaria collaborative research in Benin, we analyze authorship of the scientific documents published on malaria from Benin. Methods We collected bibliographic data from the Web Of Science on malaria research in Benin from January 1996 to December 2016. From the collected data, a mulitigraph co-authorship network with authors representing vertices was generated. An edge was drawn between two authors when they co-author a paper. We computed vertex degree, betweenness, closeness, and eigenvectors among others to identify prolific authors. We further assess the weak points and how information flow in the network. Finally, we perform a hierarchical clustering analysis, and Monte-Carlo simulations. Results Overall, 427 publications were included in this study. The generated network contained 1792 authors and 116,388 parallel edges which converted in a weighted graph of 1792 vertices and 95,787 edges. Our results suggested that prolific authors with higher degrees tend to collaborate more. The hierarchical clustering revealed 23 clusters, seven of which form a giant component containing 94% of all the vertices in the network. This giant component has all the characteristics of a small-world network with a small shortest path distance between pairs of three, a diameter of 10 and a high clustering coefficient of 0.964. However, Monte-Carlo simulations suggested our observed network is an unusual type of small-world network. Sixteen vertices were identified as weak articulation points within the network. Conclusion The malaria research collaboration network in Benin is a complex network that seems to display the characteristics of a small-world network. This research reveals the presence of closed research groups where collaborative research likely happens only between members. Interdisciplinary collaboration tends to occur at higher levels between prolific researchers. Continuously supporting, stabilizing the identified key brokers and most productive authors in the Malaria research collaborative network is an urgent need in Benin. It will foster the malaria research network and ensure the promotion of junior scientists in the field.

VIS consists of three conferences, held concurrently: the IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology Conference (VAST 2017), the IEEE Information Visualization Conference (InfoVis 2017), and the IEEE Scientific Visualization Conference (SciVis 2017). Information on the paper review process is provided along with an overview of each conference.

Scientific output, as measured in research published annually, has seen a consistent growth for decades now. As more manuscripts are submitted for publication each year, new publishing venues appear – often as increasingly specialised offshoots of existing journals and conferences. This situation presents scholars with a wealth of publishing venues to consider and choose from for their manuscripts. Surprisingly, we find that the most cited papers are not necessarily found in the highest-ranked journals, while the best conferences dominate in this regard. We find it intriguing that popular Computer Science conferences act like a vacuum of attention, centralising all good publications, while journals are carried less by their renown and thus can attract strong manuscripts even at a low rank. But to what extent does a venue imply a paper’s recognition and popularity? We propose a new approach and processing pipeline, in which we project a heterogeneous publication network, learn representations for papers and classify said papers according to their 2-year citation success. This framework provides a groundwork for a venue recommendation system, a tool for improving paper’s scientific recognition through a better choice of a publishing venue.

Arguably, usability testing is most effective when integrated into the user-centered design process. One way to encourage this integration is to reemphasize the value of paper prototyping. In a recent test of a university library website, we married low-fidelity paper prototyping with medium-fidelity wireframe prototyping. When user navigation led to nonexisting pages or dead ends, users were encouraged to create what they thought should be where there was nothing. This blank-page technique gave us insights into users' mental models regarding site content and design, providing developers with useful data concerning how users conceptualized information they encountered.

Care providers today routinely obtain valuable clinical multimedia with mobile devices, scope cameras, ultrasound, and many other modalities at the point of care. Image capture and storage workflows may be heterogeneous across an enterprise, and as a result, they often are not well incorporated in the electronic health record. Enterprise Imaging refers to a set of strategies, initiatives, and workflows implemented across a healthcare enterprise to consistently and optimally capture, index, manage, store, distribute, view, exchange, and analyze all clinical imaging and multimedia content to enhance the electronic health record. This paper is intended to introduce Enterprise Imaging as an important initiative to clinical and informatics leadership, and outline its key elements of governance, strategy, infrastructure, common multimedia content, acquisition workflows, enterprise image viewers, and image exchange services.

After analyzing several Android mobile banking trojans, weobserved the presence of repetitive artifacts that describe valuable informationabout the distribution of this class of malicious apps. Motivatedby the high threat level posed by mobile banking trojans and by thelack of publicly available analysis and intelligence tools, we automatedthe extraction of such artifacts and created a malware tracker namedDroydSeuss. DroydSeuss first processes applications both statically anddynamically, extracting relevant strings that contain traces of communicationendpoints. Second, it prioritizes the extracted strings based onthe APIs that manipulate them. Finally, DroydSeuss correlates the endpointswith descriptive metadata from the samples, providing aggregatedstatistics, raw data, and cross-sample information that allow researchersto pinpoint relevant groups of applications.We connected DroydSeuss to the VirusTotal daily feed, consuming Androidsamples that perform banking-trojan activity. We manually analyzedits output and found supporting evidence to confirm its correctness.Remarkably, the most frequent itemset unveiled a campaign currentlyspreading against Chinese and Korean bank customers.Although motivated by mobile banking trojans, DroydSeuss can be usedto analyze the communication behavior of any suspicious application.

Building web applications, which integrate information available over the web, increasingly requires frameworks to support the discovery of data services, enabling access to web data sources. Web data services might be discovered according to different criteria, such as their descriptions, their co-usage in similar applications, other developers who used the data services in their own development experiences. Recent approaches in literature convey on data service selection based on multiple criteria. In this paper, we take a distinguishing viewpoint, by proposing an exploratory search method, that enables web applications developers to iteratively discover services of interest and progressively improve their knowledge on available web data services.

International audience; Sentiment analysis has grown to become increasingly important for companies to more accurately understand customer/supplier sentiments about their processes/products and services, and predict customer churn. In particular, existing sentiment analysis aims to better understand their customer’s or supplier’s emotions which are essentially the affirmative, negative, and neutral views of users on tangible or intangible entities e.g., products or services. One of the most prevalent sources to analyse these sentiments is Twitter. Unfortunately, however, existing sentiment analysis techniques suffer from three serious shortcomings: (1) they have problems to effectively deal with streaming data as they can merely exploit (Twitter) hashtags, and (2) neglect the context of Tweets. In this paper, we present SANA: a context-aware solution for dealing with streaming (Twitter) data, analysing this data on the fly taking into account context and more comprehensive semantics of Tweets, and dynamically monitoring and visualising trends in sentiments through dashboarding and query facilities.

In 1996 Smithsonian Libraries (SIL) embarked on the digitization of its collections. By 1999, a full-scale digitization center was in place and rare volumes from the natural history collections, often of high illustrative value, were the focus for the first years of the program. The resulting beautiful books made available for online display were successful to a certain extent, but it soon became clear that the data locked within the texts needed to be converted to more usable and re-purposable form via digitization methods that went beyond simple page imaging and included text conversion elements. Library staff met with researchers from the taxonomic community to understand their path to the literature and identified tools (indexes and bibliographies) used to connect to the library holdings. The traditional library metadata describing the titles, which made them easily retrievable from the shelves of libraries, was not meeting the needs of the researcher looking for more detailed and granular data within the texts. The result was to identify proper print tools that could potential assist researchers in digital form. This paper outlines the project undertaken to convert Charles Davies Sherborn's Index Animalium into a tool to connect researchers to the library holdings: from a print index to a database to eventually a dataset. Sherborn's microcitation of a species name and his bibliographies help bridge the gap between taxonomist and literature holdings of libraries. In 2004, SIL received funding from the Smithsonian's Atherton Seidell Endowment to create an online version of Sherborn's Index Animalium. The initial project was to digitize the page images and re-key the data into a simple data structure. As the project evolved, a more complex database was developed which enabled quality field searching to retrieve species names and to search the bibliography. Problems with inconsistent abbreviations and styling of his bibliographies made the parsing of the data difficult. Coinciding with the development of the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) in 2005, it became obvious there was a need to integrate the database converted Index Animalium, BHL's scanned taxonomic literature, and taxonomic intelligence (the algorithmic identification of binomial, Latinate name-strings). The challenges of working with legacy taxonomic citation, computer matching algorithms, and making connections have brought us to today's goal of making Sherborn available and linked to other datasets. Partnering with others to allow machine-to-machine communications the data is being examined for possible transformation into RDF markup and meeting the standards of Linked Open Data. SIL staff have partnered with Thomson Reuters and the Global Names Initiative to further enhance the Index Animalium data set. Thomson Reuters' staff is now working on integrating the species microcitation and species name in the ION: Index to Organism Names project; Richard Pyle (The Bishop Museum) is also working on further parsing of the text. The Index Animalium collaborative project's ultimate goal is to successful have researchers go seamlessly from the species name in either ION or the scanned pages of Index Animalium to the digitized original description in BHL - connecting taxonomic researchers to original authored species descriptions with just a click.

BACKGROUND: The objectives of the study were to develop web-based Spanish and Catalan versions of the EQ-5D-Y, and to compare scores and psychometric properties with the paper version. METHODS: Web-based and paper versions of EQ-5D-Y were included in a cross-sectional study in Palafolls (Barcelona), Spain and administered to students (n = 923) aged 8 to 18 years from 2 primary and 1 secondary school and their parents. All students completed both the web-based and paper versions during school time with an interval of at least 2 h between administrations. The order of administration was randomized. Participants completed EQ-5D-Y, a measure of mental health status (the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire), and sociodemographic variables using a self-administered questionnaire. Parents questionnaire included parental level of education and presence of chronic conditions in children. Missing values, and floor and ceiling effects were compared between versions. Mean score differences were computed for the visual analogue scale (VAS). Percentage of agreement, kappa index (k) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were computed to analyze the level of agreement between web-based and paper versions on EQ-5D-Y dimensions and VAS. Known groups validity was analyzed and compared between the two formats. RESULTS: Participation rate was 77 % (n = 715). Both formats of EQ-5D-Y showed low percentages of missing values (n = 2, and 4 to 9 for web and paper versions respectively), and a high ceiling effect by dimension (range from 79 % to 96 %). Percent agreement for EQ-5D-Y dimensions on the web and paper versions was acceptable (range 89 % to 97 %), and k ranged from 0.55 (0.48-0.61, usual activities dimension) to 0.75 (0.68-0.82, mobility dimension). Mean score difference on the VAS was 0.07, and the ICC for VAS scores on the two formats was 0.84 (0.82-0.86). Both formats showed acceptable ability to discriminate according to self-perceived health, reporting chronic conditions, and mental health status. CONCLUSIONS: The digital EQ-5D-Y showed almost identical VAS scores and acceptable levels of agreement on dimensions. Both formats demonstrated acceptable levels of construct validity. Availability of the Spanish and Catalan web-version will facilitate its use in HRQOL assessment and in economic evaluation.
