Incidents of mining dam failure have compromised the water quality, threatening the water supply. Different strategies are sought to restore the impacted area and to guarantee the water supply. One example is water treatment plants that treat high-polluted waters within the required limits for their multiple usages. The current study assesses the integration of reverse osmosis (RO) to a river water treatment plant (RWTP) installed in Brumadinho (Minas Gerais, Brazil) to treat the water from the Ferro-Carvão stream impacted by the B1 dam rupture in 2019. The RWTP started eleven months after the mining dam rupture and is equipped with eight coagulation-flocculation tanks followed by eight pressurised filters. A pilot RO plant was installed to polish the water treated by the RWTP. Water samples were collected at different points of the water treatment plant and were characterised by their physical, chemical, and biological parameters (160 in total). The results were compared with the historical data (1997-2022) to reveal the alterations in the water quality after the rupture event. The compliance with both parameters was only achieved after the RO treatment, which acted as an additional barrier to 30 contaminants. The water quality indexes (WQI) suggested that the raw surface water, even eleven months after the incident, was unfit for consumption (WQI: 133.9) whereas the reverse osmosis permeate was ranked as excellent in the rating grid (WQI: 23.7).

Photocatalytic membranes are a promising technology for water and wastewater treatment. Towards circular economy, extending the lifetime of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes for as long as possible is extremely important, due to the great amount of RO modules discarded every year around the world. Therefore, in the present study, photocatalytic membranes made of recycled post-lifespan RO membrane (polyamide thin-film composite), TiO 2 nanoparticles and graphene oxide are used in the treatment tertiary-treated domestic wastewater to remove trace organic compounds (TrOCs). The inclusion of dopamine throughout the surface modification process enhanced the stability of the membranes to be used as long as 10 months of operation. We investigated TrOCs removal by the membrane itself and in combination with UV-C and visible light by LED. The best results were obtained with integrated membrane UV-C system at pH 9, with considerable reductions of diclofenac (92%) and antipyrine (87%). Changes in effluent pH demonstrated an improvement in the attenuation of TrOCs concentration at higher pHs. By modifying membranes with nanocomposites, an increase in membrane hydrophilicity (4° contact angle reduction) was demonstrated. The effect of the lamp position on the light fluence that reaches the membrane was assessed, and greater values were found in the middle of the membrane, providing parameters for process optimization (0.29 ± 0.10 mW cm -2 at the center of the membrane and 0.07 ± 0.03 mW cm -2 at the right and left extremities). Ethanol production has increased over the years, and Brazil ranking second in the world using sugarcane as the main raw material. However, 10-15 L of vinasse are generated per liter of ethanol produced. Besides large volumes, this wastewater has high polluting potential due to its low pH and high concentrations of organic matter and nutrients. Given the high biodegradability of the organic matter, the treatment of this effluent by anaerobic digestion and membrane separation processes results in the generation of high value-added byproducts such as volatile fatty acids (VFAs), biohydrogen and biogas. Membrane bioreactors have been widely evaluated due to the high efficiency achieved in vinasse treatment. In recent years, high retention membrane bioreactors, in which high retention membranes (nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, forward osmosis and membrane distillation) are combined with biological processes, have gained increasing attention. This paper presents a critical review focused on high retention membrane bioreactors and the challenges associated with the proposed configurations. For nanofiltration membrane bioreactor (NF-MBR), the main drawback is the higher fouling propensity due to the hydraulic driving force. Nonetheless, the development of membranes with high permeability and anti-fouling properties is uprising. Regarding osmotic membrane bioreactor (OMBR), special attention is needed for the selection of a proper draw solution, which desirably should be low cost, have high osmolality, reduce reverse salt flux, and can be easily reconcentrated. Membrane distillation bioreactor (MDBR) also exhibit some shortcomings, with emphasis on energy demand, that can be solved with the use of low-grade and residual heat, or renewable energies. With dam failure events, there can be changes in water quality and difficulties in the operation of water treatment plants (WTPs) since they were not designed for water treatment under severe pollution conditions. To avoid that, it was investigated two strategies based on pre-oxidation, ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) integrated into a conventional treatment process (coagulation, flocculation, and sand filtration) or with each other, with the potential to reduce the risks of drinking water shortage and guarantee a safe drinking water supply. The study considered the context of the Velhas river basin (Brazil), where water quality is compromised by high turbidities (500-3000 NTU) and excessive arsenic (∼0.4 mg/L), iron (∼50 mg/L), and manganese (∼3 mg/L) levels. They were only partially removed by conventional treatments (removals: 74 ± 21%) and potability standards were only achieved after the membrane separation processes were considered (As: <0.01 mg/L, Mn: <0.1 mg/L, and Fe: <0.3 mg/L). The high water quality after RO enables its blend with the stream obtained after sand filters and would allow for greater flexibility during the operation of WTPs operation. Despite the susceptibility to fouling and most frequent maintenance, the pre-oxidation-UF-RO system would also guarantee a safe drinking water supply. The decision for the most adequate strategy was then based on a multicriteria analysis. A retrofit of conventional WTPs by their integration with UF-RO was classified as the best strategy for centralized facilities, whereas pre-oxidation-UF-RO better fits the reality of decentralized treatments given the lower costs and deployment time. Membrane distillation is a well-established technology for non-volatile components retention, but the removal of volatile and semi-volatile substances in trace concentration, such as phenols derivates commonly found in surface waters, requires further comprehension. In this context, the direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) performance was assessed for the retention of fifteen phenolic compounds in surface water by different operating conditions of temperature (40, 50, and 60 °C), feed concentration (3, 5, 7, and 10 μg L -1 ), and permeate recovery rate (30, 50 and 70%). Kruskal Wallis confirmed a significant difference (p < 0.05) between the global removal of phenolic compounds at different temperatures. The increase in temperature led to a reduction in all compound's removal. As expected, a positive correlation (r Spearman >0.8) between the compounds' volatility and their losses was observed. Regarding the feed concentration and the recovery rate, there was no statistical difference between the removal values obtained for the phenolic compounds. This indicates the DCMD strength for that application. However, a trend for flux decay was noticed as the recovery rate (RR) increased, confirmed by temporal trend analysis and Mann-Kendall tests, although the flux decay was relatively low (J/J 0  = 0.89). Aiming for a greater removal and to avoid a reduction in process performance, it is recommended to work with 40 °C as feed temperature and a RR prior to the flux decay (RR<30%). Several studies have investigated the removal of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) by wastewater treatment technologies due to the risk that these compounds pose to the environment. In this sense, advanced biological processes have been developed for micropollutants removal, such as membrane bioreactors and moving bed biofilm reactors. Thus, this review holistically evaluated the biodegradation of 18 environmentally hazardous PhACs. Biological processes were assessed including removal efficiencies, environmental risk, and ecological footprint (consumption of resources and energy, atmospheric emissions, and waste generation). The maximum concentration of PhACs for a low or negligible risk scenario in treated wastewater and the potential of biological processes to meet this goal were assessed. Among the evaluated PhACs, the most biodegradable was paracetamol, while the most recalcitrant was diclofenac. Combination of conventional processes and advanced biological processes proved to be the most efficient way to remove several PhACs, mainly the osmotic membrane bioreactor., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. The presence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in water supply systems has been generating great concern about their effects on the environment and human health. Twenty-eight PhACs were monitored during one year in four Brazilian water sources, aiming to understand the factors that influence their occurrence and removal in conventional drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) and to assess the environmental and human health risks. Trace levels of PhACs were detected in surface and drinking water in all assessed water sources. Effects of seasonality and socioeconomic aspects were observed in PhACs occurrence, like their higher concentrations during winter and in locales with higher values of gross domestic product per capita and human development index. Betamethasone, prednisone, and fluconazole were the most commonly detected PhACs, and also presented the highest concentrations. However, they were not related to toxicological risks. Nonetheless, all surface waters were subject to toxicological risk owing to at least one PhAC. PhACs related to the highest toxicological risks were loratadine, atorvastatin, norfloxacin, caffeine, and ranitidine, however, all these PhACs presented low quantification frequency. DWTPs capacity to remove PhACs was only partial, so treated water was still contaminated with these compounds. Furthermore, atorvastatin presented a margin of exposure below 100, indicating possible risk for public health. Recycling of end-of-life polyamide-based thin film composite (TFC) membranes is gaining interest in academic and industrial contexts. The effects of chlorine exposure on the performance of polyamide membranes result in an increase in membrane permeability, whereas the solute rejection decreases. Therefore, the controlled chemical conversion of old reverse osmosis (RO) membranes has been reported by some previous papers. The objectives of this study were to assess recycling of old nanofiltration (NF) membrane, to assess the performance of the recycled membranes for a river water treatment application, and to conduct preliminary cost evaluations. Recycling technique consisted of exposing the membrane to a sodium hypochlorite solution in order to remove its polyamide layer and conversion to a low-pressure membrane. The work conducted bench scale and long-time pilot tests, and the recycled membranes showed a low fouling tendency. The difference between some results in bench- and pilot scale underscores the importance of evaluating design parameters using pilot scale units. Based on the cost analysis, the total cost of chemical recycling end-of-line NF membranes for a river water treatment is approximately 1.1% of the cost of using a new UF membrane. There is a great potential in using recycled membranes for rivers water treatments.

The presence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments has become a major issue of concern for scientific community, since there is a lack of information about risks and impacts to the environment and public health. In the context of Brazil, many cities do not have Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) and domestic sewage is dumped directly into the water bodies, aggravating the problem. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the presence of 28 prescribed pharmaceuticals from different therapeutic classes in six full-scale Drinking Water Treatment Plants (DWTPs) in Minas Gerais state. Samples were collected in twelve field campaigns from August 2016 to August 2017 and water quality were monitored. Analytical methodology was based on solid phase extraction (C18 cartridge) followed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (Prominence DGU/20A3 - Shimadzu) coupled to Mass Spectrometry (micrOTOF-QII - Bruker). Considering the 28 pharmaceuticals analyzed, 18 were detected in the surface water source at concentrations ranging from Method Quantification Limit (MQL) to 11,960 ng/L. The aim of this study was to evaluate an innovative treatment route for gold-mining effluents rich in calcium, arsenic, and sulfate. This treatment route comprised two nanofiltration (NF) stages and a two-step intermediate precipitation. Arsenic and iron coprecipitation (first step) and calcium carbonate precipitation (second step) were assessed aiming to treat the first-stage NF concentrate and increase the permeate recovery rate in a second-stage NF. The pH, the molar ratio of Fe/As (first step), and the molar ratio of CO 3 /Ca (second step) were optimized by using rotational central composite design. Under optimal conditions, the arsenic removal was 99.8% (at pH = 7.0 and Fe/As = 4.0), and the calcium removal was 99.5% (at pH 11.5 and CO 3 /Ca = 3.5). The supernatant of Ca precipitation had very basic pH and had to be acidified before the second-stage NF. The pH 8.5 proved to be the best one regarding retention efficiency and flux. The flux decay of the second-stage NF was attributed to both osmotic pressure increase and reversible fouling resistance. It was concluded that the proposed treatment system is efficient for the treatment of gold-mining wastewater, ensuring higher production of treated effluent and an easy disposable of the final concentrate.

This study compares the performance of the membrane bioreactor (MBR) inoculated with commercial baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) (MBRy) versus one inoculated with bacterial sludge (MBRb) for treatment of landfill leachate. The MBRb and MBRy were operated with a hydraulic retention time of 48 h, solids retention time of 60 d, and specific air demand based on membrane area of 0.6 m 3  h -1  m -2 . The MBRy was more efficient in removing chemical oxygen demand (COD) (68 ± 12%), color (79 ± 8%), ammoniacal nitrogen (58 ± 18%), and phosphorus (62 ± 19%) compared to MBRb, which showed removal efficiencies of 44 ± 18%, 46 ± 20%, 45 ± 17%, and 29 ± 15% for COD, color, ammoniacal nitrogen, and phosphorus. Furthermore, the MBRy had lower production of soluble microbial products, which are the main cause of membrane fouling, and so a lower membrane fouling potential. The average hydraulic permeability of the MBRy (32.23 L m -2  h -1  bar -1 ) was about four times higher than that of the MBRb (8.34 L m -2  h -1  bar -1 ). Thus using commercial baker's yeasts as a MBR inoculum can enhance pollutants' removal and membrane performance.

Direct (UV) and hydrogen peroxide-assisted (UV/H 2 O 2 ) photolysis were investigated in bench-scale for removing the organic compounds present in the electrodialysis reversal (EDR) brine from a refinery wastewater reclamation plant. In the UV/H 2 O 2 experiments, a COD:H 2 O 2 molar ratios of 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 were tested by recirculating the brine in the UV reactor for 120 min. Results showed a significant reduction in UVA 254 , whereas no reduction was observed for chemical oxygen demand (COD), in the UV process, suggesting great cleavage but limited mineralization of the organic matter. UV/H 2 O 2 with C:H 2 O 2 ratio of 1:3 exhibited high efficiency in removing the organic matter (COD removal of 92% with an electrical energy per removal order (E EO ) value of 22 kW h m -3 ). Although the EDR brine has high salinity, no strong scavenging effect of •OH was found in the water matrix due to the high concentration of anions, especially chloride and bicarbonate. Finally, UV/H 2 O 2 with C:H 2 O 2 ratio of 1:3 and residence time of 120 min is an efficient alternative for organic matter removal of EDR brine from refinery wastewater reclamation plant showing total capital cost (CapEx) estimated at US$ 369,653.00 and total operational cost (OpEx), at US$ 1.772 per cubic meter of effluent.

The startup process of a membrane bioreactor inoculated with yeast biomass (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and used in the treatment of landfill leachate was evaluated. The yeast membrane bioreactor (MBRy) was inoculated with an exogenous inoculum, a granulated active dry commercial bakers' yeast. The MBRy was successfully started up with a progressive increase in the landfill leachate percentage in the MBRy feed and the use of Sabouraud Dextrose Broth. The membrane plays an important role in the startup phase because of its full biomass retention and removal of organic matter. MBRy is a suitable and promising process to treat recalcitrant landfill leachate. After the acclimation period, the COD and NH 3 removal efficiency reached values of 72 ± 3% and 39 ± 2% respectively. MBRy shows a low membrane-fouling potential. The membrane fouling was influenced by soluble microbial products, extracellular polymeric substances, sludge particle size, and colloidal dissolved organic carbon.

The adverse impacts caused by the disposal of thousands of tonnes per annum of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes modules have grown dramatically around the world. The objective of this study was to evaluate the technical feasibility of recycling by chemical oxidation of end-of-life RO membranes for applications in other separation processes with specifications less rigorous. The recycling technique consisted in to cause a membrane exposition with oxidant solutions in order to remove its aromatic polyamide layer and subsequent conversion to a porous membrane. The recycling technique was evaluated by water permeability and salt rejection tests before and after the oxidative treatments. Initially, membranes' chemical cleaning and pretreatment procedures were assessed. Among factors evaluated, the oxidizing agent, its concentration and pH, associated with the oxidative treatment time, showed important influence on the oxidation of the membranes. Results showed that sodium hypochlorite and potassium permanganate are efficient agents for the membrane recycling. The great increased permeability and decreased salt rejection indicated changes on membranes' selective properties. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle characterization techniques revealed marked changes on the main membranes' physical-chemical properties, such as morphology, roughness and hydrophobicity. Reuse of produced effluents and fouling tendency of recycled membranes were also evaluated.
