Limited research exists around the complexities of scholars who identify as survivors and subsequently engage in research about sexual violence and the relationship between their own scholarship and survivor identities. As scholars of color and survivors, who work in higher education, we navigate our own trauma and the trauma of others on a regular basis. This study was a transformative opportunity to explore our own experiences with writing dissertations on campus sexual violence. Employing the concept of masking and unmasking, we engaged in a critical duoethnography to explore the depths of our survivor identity during and after writing our dissertations. Because we use duoethnography, we present transparency and value rather than findings and discussion. Our study fosters understandings regarding the relationship between survivorship and scholarship and how unmasking the dissertation process can be an act of resistance for marginalized doctoral candidates. ABSTRACT The uridine derivatives UDP-glucose and UDP-N-acetylglucosamine are important for cell wall construction as they are the precursors for the synthesis of β-1,3-glucan and chitin, respectively. Previous studies have demonstrated attenuated virulence of uridine auxotrophs in mice, which has been attributed to insufficient uridine levels for growth in the host. We have discovered that uridine deprivation in the uridine auxotroph ura3ΔΔ disrupts cell wall architecture by increasing surface mannans, exposing β-1,3-glucan and chitin, and decreasing UDP-sugar levels. Cell wall architecture and UDP-sugars can be rescued with uridine supplementation. The cell wall architectural disruptions in the ura3ΔΔ mutant also impact immune activation since the mutant elicited greater TNFα secretion from RAW264.7 macrophages than wild type. To determine if cell wall defects contributed to decreased virulence in the ura3ΔΔ mutant, we used a murine model of systemic infection. Mice infected with the ura3ΔΔ mutant exhibited increased survival and reduced kidney fungal burden compared with mice infected with wild type. However, suppression of the immune response with cyclophosphamide did not rescue virulence in mice infected with the ura3ΔΔ mutant, indicating the attenuation in virulence of uridine auxotrophs can be attributed to decreased growth in the host but not increased exposure of β-1,3-glucan. Moreover, the ura3ΔΔ mutant is unable to grow on ex vivo kidney agar, which demonstrates its inability to colonize the kidneys due to poor growth. Thus, although uridine auxotrophy elicits changes to cell wall architecture that increase the exposure of immunogenic polymers, metabolic fitness costs more strongly drive the observed virulence attenuation.IMPORTANCECandida albicans is a common cause of bloodstream infections (candidemia). Treatment of these bloodstream infections is made difficult because of increasing antifungal resistance and drug toxicity. Thus, new tactics are needed for antifungal drug development, with immunotherapy being of particular interest. The cell wall of C. albicans is composed of highly immunogenic polymers, particularly β-1,3-glucan. However, β-1,3-glucan is naturally masked by an outer layer of mannoproteins, which hampers the detection of the fungus by the host immune system. Alteration in cell wall components has been shown to increase β-1,3-glucan exposure; however, it is unknown how the inability to synthesize precursors to cell wall components affects unmasking. Here, we demonstrate how cell wall architecture is altered in response to a deficit in precursors for cell wall synthesis and how uridine is a crucial component of these precursors.

The "health emergency" forced analysts to seek new ways of continuing with analysis. The article focuses, in particular, on the changes brought about in the setting by the presence of the sanitary mask, following a line that begins with the theme of the "mask" in the collective uses of human cultures, and develops through the Jungian concept of persona, as opposed to the "face" that may convey an authentic image of oneself. A clinical vignette illustrates the issues that the mask raises in the setting by obstructing the communication of emotions. When there is no transformative processing of concrete data, "unmasking" can also lead to an uncanny encounter and to moments of darkness and confusion in analysis, when the analyst experiences the kind of "unconscious identity" between therapist and patient that Jung defined as nigredo. The article is intended as a contribution to the analytic community's current reflections on the new and unforeseen challenges encountered in analysis at the time of the Coronavirus. It is possible to learn from these experiences with a view to integrating new elements and thus modify one's own internal setting, the compass with which each analyst orientates himself. Abstract Background Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) associated with syphilis has rarely been described in HIV-infected patients. Diagnosis can be challenging because it is not always possible to discern it from a recent infection or a worsening of an undiagnosed one. Case presentation An HIV-positive 42-year-old man with a poor compliance history of antiretroviral therapy presented at our unit and complained of ocular symptoms. Ocular syphilis diagnosis was posed after initial misdiagnosing with cytomegalovirus infection, and antiretroviral therapy compliance improved after switching to a bictegravir-based regimen. Despite intravenous (IV) penicillin, we observed an initial worsening with the appearance of new skin lesions, and IRIS syphilis was suspected. In the literature, 14 cases of IRIS syphilis are described, all regarding male patients. Seven were HIV naïve to therapy, and 7 HIV-experienced with poor therapy compliance. Basal syphilis serology was negative in ten, with subsequent seroconversion after the development of IRIS. IRIS-syphilis development was observed after a median time of 28 days from ART initiation; 10 cases were considered "unmasking-IRIS" and 4 "paradoxical-IRIS". Skin and ocular involvement were the most often reported. In most cases, it was not necessary to use a systemic steroid. A good outcome was reported in 12. Conclusions Syphilis should be considered in differential diagnosis with other diseases associated with IRIS. A negative syphilis serology before beginning antiretroviral therapy could convey the impression that syphilis has been ruled out. Whereas a high index of suspicion should be maintained when symptoms suggestive of syphilis, such as ocular and skin manifestations, are noticed after therapy has begun.

The vaccination used for the prevention of COVID-19 could unmask patients with hidden Brugada syndrome even without febrile episodes. We described a case of unmasking or Brugada syndrome in a female patient after vaccination for COVID-19. A possible relationship with sudden death events requires further study. In people with known Brugada syndrome or in their relatives, we recommend serial electrocardiographic monitoring after the administration of the vaccination dose.

ABSTRACT To successfully induce disease, Candida albicans must effectively evade the host immune system. One mechanism used by C. albicans to achieve this is to mask immunogenic β(1,3)-glucan epitopes within its cell wall under an outer layer of mannosylated glycoproteins. Consequently, induction of β(1,3)-glucan exposure (unmasking) via genetic or chemical manipulation increases fungal recognition by host immune cells in vitro and attenuates disease during systemic infection in mice. Treatment with the echinocandin caspofungin is one of the most potent drivers of β(1,3)-glucan exposure. Several reports using murine infection models suggest a role for the immune system, and specifically host β(1,3)-glucan receptors, in mediating the efficacy of echinocandin treatment in vivo. However, the mechanism by which caspofungin-induced unmasking occurs is not well understood. In this report, we show that foci of unmasking co-localize with areas of increased chitin within the yeast cell wall in response to caspofungin, and that inhibition of chitin synthesis via nikkomycin Z attenuates caspofungin-induced β(1,3)-glucan exposure. Furthermore, we find that both the calcineurin and Mkc1 mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways work synergistically to regulate β(1,3)-glucan exposure and chitin synthesis in response to drug treatment. When either of these pathways are interrupted, it results in a bimodal population of cells containing either high or low chitin content. Importantly, increased unmasking correlates with increased chitin content within these cells. Microscopy further indicates that caspofungin-induced unmasking correlates with actively growing cells. Collectively, our work presents a model in which chitin synthesis induces unmasking within the cell wall in response to caspofungin in growing cells. IMPORTANCE Systemic candidiasis has reported mortality rates ranging from 20% to 40%. The echinocandins, including caspofungin, are first-line antifungals used to treat systemic candidiasis. However, studies in mice have shown that echinocandin efficacy relies on both its cidal impacts on Candida albicans, as well as a functional immune system to successfully clear invading fungi. In addition to direct C. albicans killing, caspofungin increases exposure (unmasking) of immunogenic β(1,3)-glucan moieties. To evade immune detection, β(1,3)-glucan is normally masked within the C. albicans cell wall. Consequently, unmasked β(1,3)-glucan renders these cells more visible to the host immune system and attenuates disease progression. Therefore, discovery of how caspofungin-induced unmasking occurs is needed to elucidate how the drug facilitates host immune system-mediated clearance in vivo. We report a strong and consistent correlation between chitin deposition and unmasking in response to caspofungin and propose a model in which altered chitin synthesis drives increased unmasking during drug exposure.

The common presentations of statin intolerance are muscle-specific symptoms. Although statins are one type of drug reported to cause myasthenic worsening, myasthenic worsening has not been recognized as statin intolerance. The purpose of the present study is to investigate in a large cohort the safety profiles of statins in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG). A total of 1710 consecutive patients with MG who visited sites associated with the Japan MG registry 2021 group between April and October 2021 were reviewed. Statin-associated myasthenic worsening was defined as worsening of any myasthenic symptoms on statin use and improvement of the symptom by stopping the statin or by undertaking additional treatment with patient and doctor confirmation. Among the 400 patients who used statins, 8 (2%) patients experienced statin intolerance and 6 (1.5%) patients experienced myasthenic worsening. No patients developed MG on the statin. Ptosis was a main symptom of myasthenic worsening in 4 (67%) patients. Atorvastatin was used in all patients with statin-associated myasthenic worsening. The symptoms of statin intolerance and statin-associated myasthenic worsening were improved within 2 months and 3 months, respectively, in all patients by cessation of statin use. Regarding statin-associated myasthenic worsening, prevalence was low, and severity was mild; with cessation of statin use, symptoms improved within a few months, and outcomes were generally good. Although statins can be used in MG patients with little concern, statin-associated myasthenic worsening should be noted in addition to the classical statin intolerance associated with statin use. • In 1710 MG patients, 400 patients used statins and 2% experienced statin intolerance. • 1.5% had statin-associated myasthenic worsening and ptosis was a primary symptom. • Symptoms improved within only a few months with cessation of statin use. • Statins should be used and monitored in MG patients if needed. • Statin-associated myasthenic worsening should be added in classical statin intolerance. Background Fever, alcohol, and sodium channel blockers can unmask Brugada pattern and may also induce arrhythmias in Brugada syndrome. We report a case of unmasked Type-1 Brugada pattern presenting with ventricular fibrillation that was induced by a tetrahydrocannabinol vaping. Case summary A 48-year-old male with a past medical history of hypertension treated with hydrochlorothiazide and back pain controlled with tetrahydrocannabinol vaping presented with sudden cardiac arrest from ventricular fibrillation, which was terminated with defibrillation. Electrocardiogram after resuscitation showed a new Type-1 Brugada pattern compared to a previous normal baseline electrocardiogram. Echocardiography and coronary angiogram were unremarkable. Complete blood count and chemistries were unremarkable except for mild hypokalaemia (K = 3.3 mmol/L). After correction of the hypokalaemia, the Type-1 Brugada pattern persisted. Urine drug screen was positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (60 ng/mL). Genetic testing was negative for inherited arrhythmic disease and cardiomyopathy gene panels. Discussion The patient's type-1 Brugada pattern and ventricular fibrillation were likely induced by vaping tetrahydrocannabinol. He underwent secondary prevention with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. He abstains from cannabis and Type-1 Brugada pattern is normalized. Viewing Shelley’s The Cenci from the political upheavals of the nineteenth century would limit one’s response to the play to the issues of that century. However, this play continues to be played in the twenty first century, which makes one wonder how a modern spectator with a feminist inclination might react to the theme of rape and revenge. The Cenci shares with a number of movies flourishing with the rise of the second wave feminism during the 1970s, the theme of a female victim transformed into a hero-avenger, who takes law into her own hands and avenges herself in the face of a dysfunctional legal state. As revisions of the archetypal narratives of violation-revenge-violation, these modern movies have been praised for depicting heroines who are no longer powerless, miserable and victimized, but strong enough to avenge themselves with impunity. Though The Cenci repeats the traditional pattern of violation-revenge-violation, it focuses on the corruption and irresponsibility of the patriarchal legal system as well as its reformation, which have been neglected by both mythical narratives and modern rape-revenge movies. By reading The Cenci along with William Blake’s “Visions of the Daughters of Albion” and Shelley’s “Prometheus Unbound,” we examine how The Cenci challenges the modern rape-revenge movies and how Beatrice could have used her agency and her anger in a more effective way to fight against tyranny.

Candida spp. are an important source of systemic and mucosal infections in immune compromised populations. However, drug resistance or toxicity has put limits on the efficacy of current antifungals. The C. albicans cell wall is considered a good therapeutic target due to its roles in viability and fungal pathogenicity. One potential method for improving antifungal strategies could be to enhance the detection of fungal cell wall antigens by host immune cells. (1,3)-glucan, which is an important component of fungal cell walls, is a highly immunogenic epitope. Consequently, multiple host pattern recognition receptors, such as dectin-1, complement receptor 3 (CR3), and the ephrin type A receptor A (EphA2) are capable of recognizing exposed (unmasked) (1,3)-glucan moieties on the cell surface to initiate an anti-fungal immune response. However, (1,3)-glucan is normally covered (masked) by a layer of glycosylated proteins on the outer surface of the cell wall, hiding it from immune detection. In order to better understand possible mechanisms of unmasking (1,3)-glucan, we must develop a deeper comprehension of the pathways driving this phenotype. In this review, we describe the medical importance of (1,3)-glucan exposure in anti-fungal immunity, and highlight environmental stimuli and stressors encountered within the host that are capable of inducing changes in the levels of surface exposed (1,3)-glucan. Furthermore, particular focus is placed on how signal transduction cascades regulate changes in (1,3)-glucan exposure, as understanding the role that these pathways have in mediating this phenotype will be critical for future therapeutic development.

Feminist activist, novelist, literary critic, bio-ethnographer, legal autodidact, and political writer: Rebecca West (1892–1983) was a 20th-century phenomenon. She was also a lifelong critic of communism's appeal to the intelligentsia. Communism, West claimed, was attractive to three groups of intellectuals outside the Soviet bloc: a minority of scientists who viewed politics as merely a sum of technical problems to solve; the emotionally devastated for whom communism was a means of mental reorientation; and a déclassé segment of the middle class who envisaged communism as a means of material and status advancement. I examine West's three explanations for communism's allure, and then proceed to evaluate her account. My assessment is both empirical, using sociological data on American and European communist parties, and methodological, examining the techniques of West's style, a mix of novelistic empathy and unmasking political partisanship. This mixture I consider fatal because while the novel, like historical interpretation, allows a generous understanding of human agents, unmasking tends towards caricature and denunciation. Unmasking is a rhetorical device that involves exposing another's true motives. But in effect, it often entails imputing motives and imposing a caricature of the mask behind which one allegedly hides—hence its reputation as a hyperbolic style. Despite these dangers, unmasking plays a central role in Jean-Jacques Rousseau's methodology, as well as those of Sigmund Freud and Karl Marx. In this article, I identify three concepts necessary for the style's emergence: the pre-social individual, hypocrisy and autonomy. These concepts are not unique to modernity. As such, I show how their evolution from antiquity to modernity makes unmasking possible; in so doing, I also explain why the ancient and Christian moral frameworks preclude it. More precisely, I will demonstrate how Rousseau constructs his social theory—the very same one that Claude Lévi-Strauss regards as the "foundation" of the social sciences—from these concepts, and thus gives birth to the unmasking style. Peter Baehr's claim that Rousseau fired "the opening salvo in the unmasking war" is therefore substantiated. While I do not intend to argue that unmasking is part of the basic foundation of the social sciences, this article should at least permit us to consider its pervasiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tuberculosis (TB) is the most common opportunistic infection that makes human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection more complicated. TB-immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (TB-IRIS) mainly refers to an excessive immune response among HIV-infected patients. In HIV-infected patients, IRIS occurs after initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART), irrespective of increased CD4 count and effective suppression of HIV viremia; IRIS may occur at any stage in the progression of immunodeficiency and manifests with weakened immune system. IRIS is associated with various inflammatory processes as the outcome of immunological reaction against a variety of opportunistic infections (OIs). Currently, there is no reliable biological marker available for diagnosis of TB-IRIS. In accordance with current clinical case definition, deterioration of clinical and radiological symptoms of pre-existing TB infection in HIV patients is called “paradoxical TB-IRIS”. The appearance of a previously undiagnosed or new TB infection during ART treatment is called “unmasking TB-IRIS”. IRIS is a challenging complication for researchers and medical practitioners, as the incidence of IRIS is between 3-40% in patients initiated on ART. The variation in incidence probably reflects the differences in case definitions, patients’ population studied, and individual resource-limited settings. The immune pathogenesis of IRIS is poorly understood, and epidemiology partially defined. The complication for clinicians remains challenging in terms of diagnosis and treatment as well as patients’ suffering, even though, the mortality is typically low.

Consistent with their treatment of individual participants, educational researchers regularly use pseudonyms to reference their study sites. The rationales, strategies, and implications of masking places may differ from those for masking people. However, both practices are so pervasive as to have become unexamined defaults, and they are assumed as methodological and ethical steps taken because little good can be imagined from actually naming our study sites or participants. Drawing on ethnographic work I conducted in Garden City, Kansas, I consider how unmasking the specific place I researched rather than referring to a place like this place mattered through my fieldwork, writing, and dissemination processes. Under a “cocktail party” environment, listeners can utilize prior knowledge of the content and voice of the target speech [i.e., auditory speech priming (ASP)] and perceived spatial separation to improve recognition of the target speech among masking speech. Previous studies suggest that these two unmasking cues are not processed independently. However, it is unclear whether the unmasking effects of these two cues are supported by common neural bases. In the current study, we aimed to first confirm that ASP and perceived spatial separation contribute to the improvement of speech recognition interactively in a multitalker condition and further investigate whether there exist intersectant brain substrates underlying both unmasking effects, by introducing these two unmasking cues in a unified paradigm and using functional magnetic resonance imaging. The results showed that neural activations by the unmasking effects of ASP and perceived separation partly overlapped in brain areas: the left pars triangularis (TriIFG) and orbitalis of the inferior frontal gyrus, left inferior parietal lobule, left supramarginal gyrus, and bilateral putamen, all of which are involved in the sensorimotor integration and the speech production. The activations of the left TriIFG were correlated with behavioral improvements caused by ASP and perceived separation. Meanwhile, ASP and perceived separation also enhanced the functional connectivity between the left IFG and brain areas related to the suppression of distractive speech signals: the anterior cingulate cortex and the left middle frontal gyrus, respectively. Therefore, these findings suggest that the motor representation of speech is important for both the unmasking effects of ASP and perceived separation and highlight the critical role of the left IFG in these unmasking effects in “cocktail party” environments.

BackgroundThere is little information on the incidence of AIDS-defining events which have been reported in the literature to be associated with immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) after combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) initiation. These events include tuberculosis, mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), herpes simplex virus (HSV), Kaposi sarcoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), cryptococcosis and candidiasis.MethodsWe identified individuals in the HIV-CAUSAL Collaboration, which includes data from six European countries and the US, who were HIV-positive between 1996 and 2013, antiretroviral therapy naive, aged at least 18 years, had CD4 cell count and HIV-RNA measurements and had been AIDS-free for at least 1 month between those measurements and the start of follow-up. For each AIDS-defining event, we estimated the hazard ratio for no cART versus less than 3 and at least 3 months since cART initiation, adjusting for time-varying CD4 cell count and HIV-RNA via inverse probability weighting.ResultsOut of 96 562 eligible individuals (78% men) with median (interquantile range) follow-up of 31 [13,65] months, 55 144 initiated cART. The number of cases varied between 898 for tuberculosis and 113 for PML. Compared with non-cART initiation, the hazard ratio (95% confidence intervals) up to 3 months after cART initiation were 1.21 (0.90-1.63) for tuberculosis, 2.61 (1.05-6.49) for MAC, 1.17 (0.34-4.08) for CMV retinitis, 1.18 (0.62-2.26) for PML, 1.21 (0.83-1.75) for HSV, 1.18 (0.87-1.58) for Kaposi sarcoma, 1.56 (0.82-2.95) for NHL, 1.11 (0.56-2.18) for cryptococcosis and 0.77 (0.40-1.49) for candidiasis.ConclusionWith the potential exception of mycobacterial infections, unmasking IRIS does not appear to be a common complication of cART initiation in high-income countries.

These events include tuberculosis, mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), herpes simplex virus (HSV), Kaposi sarcoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), cryptococcosis and candidiasis.MethodsWe identified individuals in the HIV-CAUSAL Collaboration, which includes data from six European countries and the US, who were HIV-positive between 1996 and 2013, antiretroviral therapy naive, aged at least 18 years, had CD4 cell count and HIV-RNA measurements and had been AIDS-free for at least 1 month between those measurements and the start of follow-up. For each AIDS-defining event, we estimated the hazard ratio for no cART versus less than 3 and at least 3 months since cART initiation, adjusting for time-varying CD4 cell count and HIV-RNA via inverse probability weighting.ResultsOut of 96 562 eligible individuals (78% men) with median (interquantile range) follow-up of 31 [13,65] months, 55 144 initiated cART. The number of cases varied between 898 for tuberculosis and 113 for PML. Compared with non-cART initiation, the hazard ratio (95% confidence intervals) up to 3 months after cART initiation were 1.21 (0.90-1.63) for tuberculosis, 2.61 (1.05-6.49) for MAC, 1.17 (0.34-4.08) for CMV retinitis, 1.18 (0.62-2.26) for PML, 1.21 (0.83-1.75) for HSV, 1.18 (0.87-1.58) for Kaposi sarcoma, 1.56 (0.82-2.95) for NHL, 1.11 (0.56-2.18) for cryptococcosis and 0.77 (0.40-1.49) for candidiasis.ConclusionWith the potential exception of mycobacterial infections, unmasking IRIS does not appear to be a common complication of cART initiation in high-income countries.

In this study, we describe optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) features of two eyes with solitary CHRPE. We found that the retinal vasculature over CHRPE was normal in both cases. We observed that in solitary CHRPE, segmentation artifacts can interfere in the interpretation of retinal vasculature due to thinning of the outer retina. Visualization of the underlying choroidal vasculature was obscured to some extent by masking effect of the hyperpigmented RPE. The choroidal vasculature was better appreciated on en face OCTA. On OCTA, the retinal and choroidal vasculature associated with CHRPE was found to be normal in our study.

This essay explores the conditions of possibility for the critique of the new illiberalism exemplified by leaders such as Donald Trump and Jacob Zuma. It proposes three hypotheses. The first is that corruption is more than just a failure of the Rule of Law, but is also its innermost possibility and end result. The second is that the new illiberalism presupposes the sublation of a certain tradition of critique (focused on the practices of unmasking and transparency). Tuberculosis (TB) is the most common opportunistic infection that makes human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection more complicated. TB-immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (TB-IRIS) mainly refers to an excessive immune response among HIV-infected patients. In HIV-infected patients, IRIS occurs after initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART), irrespective of increased CD4 count and effective suppression of HIV viremia; IRIS may occur at any stage in the progression of immunodeficiency and manifests with weakened immune system. IRIS is associated with various inflammatory processes as the outcome of immunological reaction against a variety of opportunistic infections (OIs). Currently, there is no reliable biological marker available for diagnosis of TB-IRIS. In accordance with current clinical case definition, deterioration of clinical and radiological symptoms of pre-existing TB infection in HIV patients is called “paradoxical TB-IRIS”. The appearance of a previously undiagnosed or new TB infection during ART treatment is called “unmasking TB-IRIS”. IRIS is a challenging complication for researchers and medical practitioners, as the incidence of IRIS is between 3-40% in patients initiated on ART. The variation in incidence probably reflects the differences in case definitions, patients’ population studied, and individual resource-limited settings. The immune pathogenesis of IRIS is poorly understood, and epidemiology partially defined. Peter Baehr develops a necessary critique of the "unmasking style" in contemporary social theory and contemporary sociology. His analysis suggests that unmasking devolves into "a democratic bloodsport" preoccupied with humiliating opponents rather than pursuit of truth. I find the argument persuasive and insightful. But I question the place Baehr assigns to Peter Berger in his assessment of the unmasking style. In this review essay I reconsider Peter Berger's "debunking" sociology as an antidote to bad faith. Candida albicans is a commonly isolated opportunistic yeast and can endanger immune-compromised human health. As increasingly isolated strains present resistance to currently used antifungals, it is necessary to develop novel antimycotics. In a previous study, sodium houttuyfonate (SH) alone or in combination with fluconazole revealed relatively strong antifungal potential against C. albicans, and the underlying mechanism might be likely to be associated with β-glucan synthesis and transportation (Shao et al., 2017). In the present experiment, we used a standard C. albicans isolate and a phr1 mutant (phr1−/−) to investigate the interaction of SH with β-glucan, one of the critical components in cell wall and biofilm matrix. We showed that lyticase was the most effective enzyme that could significantly increase the antifungal inhibition of SH at 64 μg/mL in C. albicans SC5314 but became futile in phr1−/−. Although the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of SH were comparable in the two Candida strains used, phr1−/− appeared to be more susceptible to SH compared with C. albicans SC5314 in biofilms (64 versus 512 μg/mL). The peak areas of SH decreased markedly by 71.6, 38.2, and 62.6% in C. albicans SC5314 and by 70% and 53.2% in phr1−/− by ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) analysis after co-incubation of SH with laminarin, extracellular matrix (EM) and cell wall. The chitin appeared to not interact with SH. We further demonstrated that sub-MIC SH (8 μg/mL) was able to induce cell wall remodeling by unmasking β-1,3-glucan and chitin in both C. albicans SC5314 and phr1−/−. Based on these findings, we propose that β-1,3-glucan can block the entrance of SH through non-specific absorption, and then the fungus senses the interaction of SH with β-1,3-glucan and exposes more β-1,3-glucan that contributes to SH blocking in turn.

Underdevelopment increases unemployment, which further worsens poverty levels among people in rural communities and inequality in the country at large. At present, government financial institutions are failing to reach rural communities which they are meant to develop. The inability of such communities to access capital from formal financial institutions drives them to devise alternative means through which they can survive and improve their livelihoods. Stokvels are effective self-help economic development strategies in rural South Africa which do not depend on external forces but rely totally on the determination of members of the community to improve their lives themselves. The creation of self-help projects such as stokvels are founded on the principle of ubuntu, which goes beyond the enrichment of the individual. Stokvels constitute an ethical framework that could improve the economic distribution in modern-day society. ABSTRACT Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) immunization of children induces shifts in colonizing pneumococcal serotypes. This study evaluated the effect of infant vaccination with 7-valent PCV (PCV7) on vaccine serotype (VT) colonization and whether the increase in nonvaccine serotype (NVT) was due to either unmasking of previously low-density-colonizing serotypes or increase in acquisition of NVT. A multiplex quantitative PCR (qPCR) was used to evaluate VT and NVT nasopharyngeal colonization in archived swabs of PCV-vaccinated and PCV-unvaccinated African children at 9 and 15 to 16 months of age. Molecular qPCR clearly identified the vaccine effect typified by a decrease in VT colonization and an increase in NVT colonization. Serotype 19A was primarily responsible for the higher NVT carriage among PCV vaccinees at 9 months of age (53.4% difference; P = 0.021) and 16 months of age (70.7% difference; P < 0.001). Furthermore, the density of serotype 19A colonization was higher in PCV-vaccinated groups than in PCV-unvaccinated groups (3.76 versus 2.83 CFU/ml [P = 0.046], respectively, and 4.15 versus 3.04 CFU/ml [P = 0.013], respectively) at 9 and 16 months of age, respectively. Furthermore, serotype 19A was also more commonly reported as a primary isolate (by having the highest density among other cocolonizing serotypes identified in the sample) in PCV7-vaccinated children, while being equally a primary (46.2%) or nonprimary (53.8%) isolate in PCV-unvaccinated children. Molecular qPCR showed both serotype replacement and unmasking to be the cause for the increase in NVT colonization in PCV7-vaccinated children, as some serotypes were associated with an absolute increase in colonization (replacement), while others were associated with an increase in detection (unmasking). IMPORTANCE This study focused on evaluating the effect of infant vaccination with 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7), using a multiplex qPCR method, on the density of serotype-specific nasopharyngeal colonization in order to delineate the relative role of serotype replacement versus unmasking as the cause for the increase in nonvaccine serotype colonization in PCV7-vaccinated children. This is pertinent in the context of the ongoing deployment of PCV immunization in children, with surveillance of colonization considered an early proxy for disease that might arise from nonvaccine serotypes, as well as the success of childhood vaccination on indirect effect in the community through the interruption of pneumococcal transmission from vaccinated young children.

Under a noisy “cocktail-party” listening condition with multiple people talking, listeners can use various perceptual/cognitive unmasking cues to improve recognition of the target speech against informational speech-on-speech masking. One potential unmasking cue is the emotion expressed in a speech voice, by means of certain acoustical features. However, it was unclear whether emotionally conditioning a target-speech voice that has none of the typical acoustical features of emotions (i.e., an emotionally neutral voice) can be used by listeners for enhancing target-speech recognition under speech-on-speech masking conditions. In this study we examined the recognition of target speech against a two-talker speech masker both before and after the emotionally neutral target voice was paired with a loud female screaming sound that has a marked negative emotional valence. The results showed that recognition of the target speech (especially the first keyword in a target sentence) was significantly improved by emotionally conditioning the target speaker’s voice. Moreover, the emotional unmasking effect was independent of the unmasking effect of the perceived spatial separation between the target speech and the masker. Also, (skin conductance) electrodermal responses became stronger after emotional learning when the target speech and masker were perceptually co-located, suggesting an increase of listening efforts when the target speech was informationally masked. These results indicate that emotionally conditioning the target speaker’s voice does not change the acoustical parameters of the target-speech stimuli, but the emotionally conditioned vocal features can be used as cues for unmasking target speech. Under a "cocktail-party" listening condition with multiple-people talking, compared to healthy people, people with schizophrenia benefit less from the use of visual-speech (lipreading) priming (VSP) cues to improve speech recognition. The neural mechanisms underlying the unmasking effect of VSP remain unknown. This study investigated the brain substrates underlying the unmasking effect of VSP in healthy listeners and the schizophrenia-induced changes in the brain substrates. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, brain activation and functional connectivity for the contrasts of the VSP listening condition vs. the visual non-speech priming (VNSP) condition were examined in 16 healthy listeners (27.4 ± 8.6 years old, 9 females and 7 males) and 22 listeners with schizophrenia (29.0 ± 8.1 years old, 8 females and 14 males). The results showed that in healthy listeners, but not listeners with schizophrenia, the VSP-induced activation (against the VNSP condition) of the left posterior inferior temporal gyrus (pITG) was significantly correlated with the VSP-induced improvement in target-speech recognition against speech masking. Compared to healthy listeners, listeners with schizophrenia showed significantly lower VSP-induced activation of the left pITG and reduced functional connectivity of the left pITG with the bilateral Rolandic operculum, bilateral STG, and left insular. Thus, the left pITG and its functional connectivitymay be the brain substrates related to the unmasking effect of VSP, assumedly through enhancing both the processing of target visual-speech signals and the inhibition of masking-speech signals. In people with schizophrenia, the reduced unmasking effect of VSP on speech recognition may be associated with a schizophrenia-related reduction of VSP-induced activation and functional connectivity of the left pITG. The close ties between modes of governing, subjectivities and critique in contemporary societies challenge the role of critical social research. The classical normative ethos of the unmasking researcher unravelling various oppressive structures of dominant vs. dominated groups in society is inadequate when it comes to understand de-politicizing mechanisms and the struggles they bring about. This article argues that only a non-normative position can stay attentive to the constant and complex evolution of modes of governing and the critical operations actors themselves engage in. The article outlines a non-normative but critical programme based on an ethos of re-politicizing contemporary pervasive modes of governing. The analytical advantages and limitations of such a programme are demonstrated by readings of both Foucauldian studies and the works of and debates regarding the French pragmatic sociology of Boltanski and Thévenot. Feature integration is one of the most fundamental problems in neuroscience. In a recent contribution, we showed that a trailing grating can diminish the masking effects one vernier exerts on another, preceding vernier. Here, we show that this temporal unmasking depends on neural spatial interactions related to the trailing grating. Hence, our paradigm allows us to study the spatio-temporal interactions underlying feature integration.

Soybean protein is added to meat products as a cheaper substitute of muscle proteins. If the presence of soybean protein in meat products is not stated on the label, this can be taken as adulteration. Detection of soybean proteins in foodstuffs is important in case of a higher rate of their application. This work was focused on the influence of solutions acting as unmasking buffers for soybean antigen retrieval in immunohistochemical examination of meat products. Seven buffers (solutions) with different pH, chemical composition or molarity were tested. The citrate EDTA (ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid) buffer facilitated the highest efficiency in soybean antigen retrieval, while 5% (w/w) urea + H2O the lowest one. Simultaneously, the effect of these buffers on section fixation on slides was tested. The highest efficiency for fixation of sections on slides was recorded for 4% (w/w) AlCl3 + Tris-HCl (tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane-HCl) (p < 0.05), which reached the lowest efficiency in terms of antigen retrieval. The efficiency of citrate buffer in antigen retrieval (immunolabelling intensity) was strong and fixation of tissue sections on slides was high (p < 0.05). Therefore, citrate buffer was found to be optimal and can be recommended for immunohistochemistry of meat products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Between 1944 and 1964, Romanian Orthodox Christians were imprisoned in large numbers, for political reasons. They have been regarded not as individual victims, nor just as members of a particularly vulnerable group targetted in a political climate of ‘scientific atheism’, but in a theological and eschatological light, as part of a cosmic conflict between good and evil. Within the overall context of imprisonment, this article examines the USSR-inspired ‘re-education’ programme, carried out primarily on Orthodox students in Piteşti prison, 1949–1951, to produce the New Man for the new communist era, and the Orthodox group, Rugul Aprins [The Burning Bush], active from 1943 to 1948 and from 1955 to 1958. This group was deeply rooted in the monastic life, first at Antim Monastery, Bucharest, then more widespread, involving Orthodox monastics, theologians, intellectuals from many walks of life and students from a variety of disciplines, many of whom were imprisoned, some to the point of death. The communist New Man emerges as a walking parody of the Christian vision of the human person; in both the above groups, martyrdom appears as enigma, for extant evidence attests to holiness and maximal human freedom attained by many, in the most extreme suffering. Peter Baehr highly praises Berger's contribution to sociology, and yet sharply criticises his claim that unmasking or debunking is he signature method of sociology. Baehr hold such method of enquiry to be dangerously corrosive and in tension with the humanist intentions of Berger. I largely agree with this critique, but I have doubts that a viable alternative could be developed within the framework of the social sciences. Over a long and prodigiously fertile academic career, Peter Berger's vision of sociology has consistently emphasized its debunking and unmasking properties. Such properties, Berger contends, are evidence of sociology's humanistic promise. Following a brief description of his early transition from The Precarious Vision (a sociological book addressed principally to Christians) to Invitation to Sociology (a text keyed to a mostly secular audience), Berger's idea of humanism is described. So, too, are the roles that debunking and unmasking play in its articulation. Debunking and unmasking, conflated by Berger, are then analytically distinguished, historically located, and criticized. Debunking, an American specialty, ridicules its targets but explains nothing. Unmasking, of European provenance, has pronounced anti-humanist - violent, denunciatory, coercive - tendencies, evidenced in both the French and Bolshevik Revolutions. Accordingly, any defense of unmasking that claims to uphold humanism requires major qualification. The article, as well as assessing Berger's humanism, employs it as an opportunity to think more broadly, and more critically, about the types of debunking/unmasking in modern life. Raymond Aron (1905–1983) assumed many guises over a long and fruitful career: journalist, polemicist, philosopher of history, counselor to political leaders and officials, theorist of nuclear deterrence and international relations. He was also France’s most notable sociologist. While Aron had especially close ties with Britain, a result of his days in active exile there during the Second World War, he was widely appreciated in the United States too. His book Main Currents in Sociological Thought was hailed a masterpiece; more generally, Aron’s books were extensively reviewed in the American Journal of Sociology, the American Sociological Review (in earlier days, it hosted a review section), Contemporary Sociology, and Social Forces. And he was admired and cited by sociologists of the stature of Daniel Bell, Edward Shils, and David Riesman. Yet despite appearing well poised to become a major force in international sociology, analogous to his younger collaborator, Pierre Bourdieu, Aron has almost vanished from the sociological landscape. This article explains why, offering in the process some observations on the conditions—conceptual and motivational—of reputational longevity in sociological theory and showing how Aron failed to meet them.
