In this article the author reflects on Cuban political discourse during the late 20th century and the function of Cuban literature and culture in articulating national allegories. The author refers to the newspaper article "Socialismo y el Nuevo Hombre" (Socialism and the New Man) by Cuban revolutionary hero Ernesto Che Guevara and explores the literary depiction of Guevara's new man in Cuban literature since the 1970s. She comments on melancholy and disillusionment in Guevara's article and cites various works including "Y si muero mañana" by Luis Rogelio Noguera, "Fuera del fuego" by Heberto Padilla and " by Pedro Marqués de Armas "Monólogo de Augusto."

The article discusses the depiction of Cuban blacks in the early poetry of Afro-Cuban poet Marcelino Arozarena. The author argues that Arozarena's early portrayal of Cuban blacks was superficial, even though Arozarena later claimed to have transcended the tendency among writers of the time to stereotype Afro-Cubans. While the author quotes several afrocubanista writers as praising Arozarena's authenticity, seriousness, and dedication to and knowledge of Afro-Cuban culture, he cites examples in Arozarena's early work which conflict with these descriptions.

The article discusses the works of writer Dulce María Loynaz. Her poetry has been described as light, fragile, subtle, and even delicate. The objective of the paper is to analyze lightness and levity as a recurring theme in Loynaz's works, particularly in her work "Canto a la mujer estéril." According to the author, the work serves as a representation for the sterile woman, as well as a compensation for the physical inabilities of woman. While the work was never intended to be autobiographical, the similarities between protagonist and author are many.

The article presents an analysis of the work of late Cuban poet Emilio Ballagas, with a focus on the relationship between religion and homosexuality in his literary work. It is the author's view that Ballagas created a homosexual identity through his poetry, hidden by religious literary images. Topics include repression, position of Catholic church regarding homosexuality, and contradictions between different analysis of Ballagas' work.

The article examines the concept of race in the works of Afro-Cuban writer Nicolás Guillén. Guillén's work mirrored Cuba's multiracial and ethnic backgrounds and he became one of Latin America's most celebrated authors of the 20th century. The article explores the canonical development of and history of Guillen's realistic portraits of mulatto life in Cuba. Several of his more important works include "Motivos de son" and "Sóngoro Cosongo. "
