Experiments in ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) and JET with the ITER-like wall (JET-ILW) are performed to separate the pedestal and core contributions to confinement in H-modes with different main ion masses. A strong isotope mass dependence in the pedestal is found which is enhanced at high gas puffing. This is because the ELM type changes when going from D to H for matched engineering parameters, which is likely due to differences in the inter ELM transport with isotope mass. The pedestal can be matched in H and D plasmas by varying only the triangularity and keeping the engineering parameters relevant for core transport the same. With matched pedestals Astra/TGLF (Sat1geo) core transport simulations predict the experimental profiles equally well for H and D. These core transport simulations show a negligible mass dependence and no gyro-Bohm scaling is observed. However, to match the experimental observations at medium β it is required to take the fast-ion dilution and rotation into account. This is not enough for high β plasmas where for the first time a profile match between H and D plasmas was achieved experimentally. Under these conditions quasilinear modelling with TGLF over predicts the transport in the core of H and D plasmas alike.

This article investigates the triggering of ELMs on JET by injection of frozen pellets of isotopes of Hydrogen. A method is established to determine the probability that a specific pellet triggers a particular ELM. This method allows clear distinction between pellet-ELM pairs that are very likely to represent triggering events and pairs that are very unlikely to represent such an event. Based on this, the pellet parameters that are most likely to affect the ability of pellets to trigger ELMs have been investigated. It has been found that the injection location is very important, with injection from the vertical high field side showing a much higher triggering efficiency than low field side (LFS) injection. The dependence on parameters such as pellet speed and size and the time since the last ELM is also seen to be much stronger for LFS injection. Finally, the paper illustrates how improvements to the pellet injection system by streamlining the pellet flight lines and slightly increasing the pellet size has resulted in a significantly improved ability to deliver pellets to the plasma and trigger ELMs.

Electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) can drive large current densities through electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD). ECCD is expected to be crucial for high-performance plasmas in future fusion reactors like ITER and DEMO, making the current drive efficiency of ECCD a critical design parameter for future reactors. In present-day devices, good agreement between measured and predicted current drive efficiency has been found. However, to ensure the reliability in future machines, a direct validation of the electron momentum distribution function is needed. As a first step towards this goal, we present in this paper oblique ECE measurements of a low-density plasma in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. Two oblique ECE diagnostics are used to allow the simultaneous measurements of electrons streaming co- and counter-directionally with the plasma current. Predictions for the distribution function are computed with the bounce-averaged Fokker-Planck code RELAX (E. Westerhof et al., Rijnhuizen report,1992). To allow direct comparison with the measurements, synthetic radiation temperatures are computed with the code ECRad (S. Denk et al., Computer Physics Communications, p. 107175, 2020). Good agreement is found if radial transport occurring predominantly at low electron energies is included. We demonstrate that the oblique ECE diagnostics measure the electron distribution function directly at the ECRH deposition site in phase space. Furthermore, they are sensitive to the abundance of pitch-angle scattered electrons that reduce the ECCD efficiency. Limitations and uncertainties of the measurements and the modeling are discussed.

The 2014–2016 JET results are reviewed in the light of their significance for optimising the ITER research plan for the active and non-active operation. More than 60 h of plasma operation with ITER first wall materials successfully took place since its installation in 2011. New multi-machine scaling of the type I-ELM divertor energy flux density to ITER is supported by first principle modelling. ITER relevant disruption experiments and first principle modelling are reported with a set of three disruption mitigation valves mimicking the ITER setup. Insights of the L–H power threshold in Deuterium and Hydrogen are given, stressing the importance of the magnetic configurations and the recent measurements of fine-scale structures in the edge radial electric. Dimensionless scans of the core and pedestal confinement provide new information to elucidate the importance of the first wall material on the fusion performance. H-mode plasmas at ITER triangularity (H = 1 at ßN ~ 1.8 and n/nGW ~ 0.6) have been sustained at 2 MA during 5 s. The ITER neutronics codes have been validated on high performance experiments. Prospects for the coming D–T campaign and 14 MeV neutron calibration strategy are reviewed. Internal diamagnetic flux measurements, with measurement loops and compensation magnetic probes inside the vacuum vessel, are now available on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The measured diamagnetic flux is compared to that predicted by simulations and calculated from equilibrium reconstruction. The diamagnetic flux measured at 2 positions separated toroidally by 180° in the vacuum vessel is compared.

Significant progress has been made in the area of advanced modes of operation that are candidates for achieving steady state conditions in a fusion reactor. The corresponding parameters, domain of operation, scenarios and integration issues of advanced scenarios are discussed in this chapter. A review of the presently developed scenarios, including discussions on operational space, is given. Significant progress has been made in the domain of heating and current drive in recent years, especially in the domain of off-axis current drive, which is essential for the achievement of the required current profile. The actuators for heating and current drive that are necessary to produce and control the advanced tokamak discharges are discussed, including modelling and predictions for ITER. The specific control issues for steady state operation are discussed, including the already existing experimental results as well as the various strategies and needs (qψ profile control and temperature gradients). Achievable parameters for the ITER steady state and hybrid scenarios with foreseen heating and current drive systems are discussed using modelling including actuators, allowing an assessment of achievable current profiles. Finally, a summary is given in the last section including outstanding issues and recommendations for further research and development.

The confinement fast ions, generated by neutral beam injection (NBI), has been investigated at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. In plasmas that exhibit strong sawtooth crashes, a significant sawtooth-induced internal redistribution of mainly passing fast ions is observed, which is in very good agreement with the theoretical predictions based on the Kadomtsev model. Between the sawtooth crashes, the fishbone modes are excited which, however, do not cause measurable changes in the global fast-ion population. During experiments with on- and off-axis NBI and without strong magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes, the fast-ion measurements agree very well with the neo-classical predictions. This shows that the MHD-induced (large-scale), as well as a possible turbulence-induced (small-scale) fast-ion transport is negligible under these conditions. However, in discharges performed to study the off-axis NBI current drive efficiency with up to 10 MW of heating power, the fast-ion measurements agree best with the theoretical predictions that assume a weak level anomalous fast-ion transport. This is also in agreement with measurements of the internal inductance, a Motional Stark Effect diagnostic and a novel polarimetry diagnostic: the fast-ion driven current profile is clearly modified when changing the NBI injection geometry and the measurements agree best with the predictions that assume weak anomalous fast-ion diffusion.

Empirical estimates indicate that the transient divertor power load induced by type-I ELMs in the standard H-mode ITER scenario might result in intolerably short target life times. Significant experimental effort has been put on the exploration of recipes to avoid or at least mitigate the ELM size by external intervention. Experimental ELM mitigation studies (and related modeling) are of interest from different points of views. First, the active intervention gives access to new, externally controlled ELMy discharge scenarios and ELM diagnostic techniques. Second, the ELM response on the type and amplitude of the applied perturbation provides additional hints on the ELM stability. Third, mitigated ELMs, possibly different from spontaneous ones, and their scaling are of interest 'per se', in case that mitigation is to be finally applied in ITER. In this contribution we report on ELM mitigation results in ASDEX Upgrade, where we further restrict the scope to those methods involving 3D, local non-axisymmetric perturbations. Perturbations applied were cryogenic pellet injection, localized supersonic pulsed injection of D gas and laser blow off from targets carrying C or Al micro pellets. The corresponding perturbations differ strongly both in the space and time domain and provide an instrument to probe the local stability. Varying the parameters of the external perturbations by e.g. changing the amount of injected material or the injection speed we mapped out the ELM trigger threshold with high spatial and temporal resolutions.

The advanced tokamak programme on DIII-D is to develop the scientific basis for steady state, high performance operation in future devices. We report on experiments attempting to demonstrate sustainment of 100% noninductive current for several seconds at high beta, using up to 2.5 MW of off-axis electron cyclotron current drive and up to 15 MW of neutral beam injection with q95 ≈ 5. A 100% noninductive condition was achieved with βT = 3.6%, βN = 3.5, H89 = 2.4 and improved current drive alignment. However, the duration of this phase was limited by the pressure profile evolution leading to magnetohydrodynamic instabilities after about 0.7 s. In a separate discharge, a nearly (~90%) noninductive, stationary condition was maintained for one current relaxation time (1.8 s) only limited by the duration of the hardware system. These experiments have achieved normalized fusion performance with bootstrap current fraction fBS ≈ 60%, consistent with requirements for the ITER Q = 5 steady-state scenarios. The modelling tools that were successfully employed to devise experiments in DIII-D are applied to ITER, indicating that full noninductive operation is plausible for an ITER steady-state scenario with Q ≈ 5.

Significant progress has been made on ASDEX Upgrade during the last two years in the basic understanding of transport, in the extension of the improved H-mode in parameter space and towards an integrated operating scenario and in the development of control methods for major performance limiting instabilities. The important features were the understanding of particle transport and the control of impurity accumulation based on it, the satisfactory operation with predominantly tungsten-clad walls, the improved H-mode operation over density ranges and for temperature ratios covering (non-simultaneously) the ITER requirements on ν*, n/nGW and Te/Ti, the ELM frequency control by pellet injection and the optimization of NTM suppression by DC-ECCD through variation of the launching angle. From these experiments an integrated scenario has emerged which extrapolates to a 50% improvement in n T τ or a 30% reduction of the required current when compared with the ITER base-line assumptions, with moderately peaked electron and controllable high-Z density profiles.

Advanced tokamak (AT) research in DIII-D seeks to provide a scientific basis for steady-state high performance operation in future devices. These regimes require high toroidal beta to maximize fusion output and high poloidal beta to maximize the self-driven bootstrap current. Achieving these conditions requires integrated, simultaneous control of the current and pressure profiles and active magnetohydrodynamic stability control. The building blocks for AT operation are in hand. Resistive wall mode stabilization by plasma rotation and active feedback with non-axisymmetric coils allows routine operation above the no-wall beta limit. Neoclassical tearing modes are stabilized by active feedback control of localized electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD). Plasma shaping and profile control provide further improvements. Under these conditions, bootstrap supplies most of the current. Steady-state operation requires replacing the remaining inductively driven current, mostly located near the half radius, with non-inductive external sources. In DIII-D this current is provided by ECCD, and nearly stationary AT discharges have been sustained with little remaining inductive current. Fast wave current drive is being developed to control the central magnetic shear. Density control, with divertor cryopumps, of AT discharges with ELMing H-mode edges facilitates high current drive efficiency at reactor relevant collisionalities. An advanced plasma control system allows integrated control of these elements. Close coupling between modelling and experiment is key to understanding the separate elements, their complex nonlinear interactions, and their integration into self-consistent high performance scenarios. This approach has resulted in fully non-inductively driven plasmas with ?N ? 3.5 and ?T ? 3.6% sustained for up to 1?s, which is approximately equal to one current relaxation time. Progress in this area, and its implications for next-step devices, will be illustrated by results of these and other recent experiment and simulation efforts.

Advanced Tokamak (AT) research in DIII-D [K. H. Burrell for the DIII-D Team, in Proceedings of the 19th Fusion Energy Conference, Lyon, France, 2002 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 2002) published on CD-ROM] seeks to provide a scientific basis for steady-state high performance operation in future devices. These regimes require high toroidal beta to maximize fusion output and poloidal beta to maximize the self-driven bootstrap current. Achieving these conditions requires integrated, simultaneous control of the current and pressure profiles, and active magnetohydrodynamic stability control. In this paper, we present numerical tools convenient for the investigation of tokamak discharges with current holes. These tools allow the computation of fixed- and free-boundary equilibria with current holes, their representation in Boozer co-ordinates, the determination of the corresponding magnetic fields, field line tracing and also tracing of guiding centre orbits inside the hole. The numerical methods are tested by using two example configurations with different hole sizes. Furthermore, an equilibrium reconstruction of an ASDEX Upgrade discharge is performed. The motional Stark effect polarization angles of this discharge, which indicate a small current hole in the plasma centre, are reproduced by a numerical fit of various equilibrium parameters including pressure profile, rotational transform profile and poloidal coil currents. The resulting plasma parameters lie well inside the experimental error margins.

Advanced tokamak regimes obtained in ASDEX Upgrade, DIII-D, FT-U, JET, JT-60U, TCV and Tore Supra experiments are assessed both in terms of their fusion performance and capability for ultimately reaching steady-state using data from the international internal transport barrier database. These advanced modes of tokamak operation are characterized by an improved core confinement and a modified current profile compared to the relaxed Ohmically driven one. The present results obtained in these experiments are studied in view of their prospect for achieving either long pulses ('hybrid' scenario with inductive and non-inductive current drive) or ultimately steady-state purely non-inductive current drive operation in next step devices such as ITER. A new operational diagram for advanced tokamak operation is proposed where the figure of merit characterizing the fusion performances and confinement, H × βN / q 295, is drawn versus the fraction of the plasma current driven by the bootstrap effect. In this diagram, present day advanced tokamak regimes have now reached an operational domain that is required in the non-inductive ITER current drive operation with typically 50% of the plasma current driven by the bootstrap effect (Green et al 2003 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 45 587). In addition, the existence domain of the advanced mode regimes is also mapped in terms of dimensionless plasmas physics quantities such as normalized Larmor radius, normalized collisionality, Mach number and ratio of ion to electron temperature. The gap between present day and future advanced tokamak experiments is quantitatively assessed in terms of these dimensionless parameters.

In order to prepare adequate current ramp-up and ramp-down scenarios for ITER, present experiments from various tokamaks have been analysed by means of integrated modelling in view of determining relevant heat transport models for these operation phases. A set of empirical heat transport models for L-mode (namely, the Bohm-gyroBohm model and scaling based models with a specific fixed radial shape and energy confinement time factors of H96-L = 0.6 or HIPB98 = 0.4) has been validated on a multi-machine experimental dataset for predicting the li dynamics within ±0.15 accuracy during current ramp-up and ramp-down phases. Simulations using the Coppi-Tang or GLF23 models (applied up to the LCFS) overestimate or underestimate the internal inductance beyond this accuracy (more than ±0.2 discrepancy in some cases). The most accurate heat transport models are then applied to projections to ITER current ramp-up, focusing on the baseline inductive scenario (main heating plateau current of Ip = 15 MA). These projections include a sensitivity study to various assumptions of the simulation. While the heat transport model is at the heart of such simulations (because of the intrinsic dependence of the plasma resistivity on electron temperature, among other parameters), more comprehensive simulations are required to test all operational aspects of the current ramp-up and ramp-down phases of ITER scenarios. Recent examples of such simulations, involving coupled core transport codes, free-boundary equilibrium solvers and a poloidal field (PF) systems controller are also described, focusing on ITER current ramp-down. © 2011 IAEA, Vienna.

External current drive (CD) is an important prerequisite for the control of the plasma current profile in advanced tokamak scenarios as well as for the development of quasi-stationary, fully noninductivly driven tokamak discharges. On ASDEX Upgrade, three heating systems, neutral beam injection, ion cyclotron resonance heating, and electron cyclotron resonance heating, are available for this purpose. The status of CD modeling and the CD capability of these systems are reviewed, and a brief overview is provided of what has been achieved experimentally with respect to CD in various discharge scenarios.

Advanced scenarios in tokamaks seek to maximize the confinement and stability of thermonuclear plasmas. Key to obtaining these conditions is operation at different current density profiles. Experiments at ASDEX Upgrade are reported with approximately zero magnetic shear in the center or reversed magnetic shear in the center. With zero magnetic shear and q 0 near 1, stationary conditions are obtained in discharges without sawteeth at 800 kA and 1 MA and q95 = 3.3 to 4.5, using a combination of central neutral beam injection (NBI) heating and off-axis NBI heating. In this regime, the temperature profiles are stiff. Central heating with ion cyclotron resonance heating and electron cyclotron resonance heating can be used to prevent excessive density peaking to maximize the stability against neoclassical tearing modes and to prevent impurity accumulation. At a lower plasma current of 400 kA with 10 MW of NBI heating, the bootstrap current fraction in this regime is above 50% giving, with the NBI current drive, nearly fully non inductively driven conditions. Operation at average electron densities of 80 to 90% of the Greenwald density limit is obtained at a triangularity of δ = 0.43 achieving β N = 3.5 in stationary conditions. Moreover, in these plasmas, type II edge-localized modes are observed in configurations close to double null. In plasmas with a reversed magnetic shear in the center, the formation of ion transport barriers with NBI heating was optimized to obtain more reproducible transport barriers with an H-mode edge for maximum stability, achieving, transiently, β N values of 4. With a 1.6 MW counter electron cyclotron current drive in the center and densities in the range =1.3 to 2.0 ×10 19 m -3 , a reversed magnetic shear and electron internal transport barriers are formed and sustained at 600 kA for 1 to 2 s with T e0 > 20 keV. Of the scenarios presented, the stationary plasmas with low magnetic shear in the center and q 95 in the range 3.3 to 4.5 would obtain reactor-relevant values for H X β N /q 2 95, a figure of merit used as a benchmark.

ASDEX Upgrade has a large variety of technical systems, heating and fuelling as well as digital control systems needed for control and optimisation of high performance plasmas. The neutral beam injection (NBI), electron cyclotron RF (ECRF) and ion cyclotron resonance frequency (ICRF) heating systems are able to operate in heating as well as in current drive (CD) mode. One of two NBI systems has recently been redirected to allow more tangential injection to provide larger CD efficiency. With improved control procedures significant success is achieved in the optimisation of the conventional H-mode (ITER reference scenario) as well as of ‘advanced tokamak’ scenarios. The established operational boundaries encounter or exceed those of the reference scenario. H-modes showing type II ELMs with clearly reduced peak power loads on the target plates are produced at densities close to the empirical Greenwald density limit. Discharges with nearly full non-inductively driven plasma current at Greenwald densities are performed. MHD instabilities like sawteeth and neoclassical tearing modes (NTM) can be tailored and/or completely be stabilised via electron cyclotron frequency CD at relatively low injection power levels. In addition, several non-standard feedback control circuits for plasma performance improvements and machine protection circuits are devised.

The radial electric field gradient or the E×B flow shear has been pointed out as the underlying mechanism for turbulence suppression, responsible for an internal transport barrier formation in advanced tokamak scenarios. A comprehensive study on these subjects requires a direct measurement of the plasma radial electric field Er. The poloidal component of the magnetic field is assessed by the motional Stark effect (MSE) polarimeter, which is currently a standard diagnostic in fusion devices, allowing a local and nonperturbative measurement of the magnetic pitch angle. A precise measure to the state of polarization of the Stark components gives the information on the direction of the magnetic field. Due to the particular orientation of the Lorentz component, that is nearly perpendicular to Er, the MSE diagnostic is very sensitive to the plasma intrinsic radial electric field. An advanced high confinement mode scenario with normalized beta (βN) up to 3.5 in stationary conditions (up to 20 energy confinement times) and βN = 3.8 transiently, has been obtained in ASDEX Upgrade. For transport analysis of high βN discharges, two types of simulations have been performed with the automated system for transport analysis code. One is the simulation of the current density profile with experimental data assuming neoclassical electrical conductivity. The other is the simulation of the energy transport and the current density profile using the Weiland transport model (ion temperature gradient and trapped electron mode limit the temperature gradient length). The comparison of the simulations of the q-profiles and temperature profiles with the experimental profiles shows good agreement and demonstrates that for this plasmas regime the temperature profiles are stiff (no internal transport barrier) as in conventional H-mode discharges. The contribution of the Ohmic, bootstrap and neutral beam driven current to the total current density profiles is calculated. The sum of the non-inductively driven plasma current is in the range 50–57% of the total plasma current. Simulations with the Weiland model are performed to investigate the influence of neoclassical tearing modes, which limit confinement and achievable βN in this scenario, by comparing with the measured kinetic data. In addition, the high βN discharges are compared to the improved H-mode discharges in ASDEX Upgrade with respect to the profile stiffness, MHD activity and experimental conditions.

Type I ELMy H-mode operation in JET with the ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW) generally occurs at lower pedestal pressures compared to those with the full carbon wall (JET-C). The pedestal density is similar but the pedestal temperature where type I ELMs occur is reduced and below to the so-called critical type I-type III transition temperature reported in JET-C experiments. Furthermore, the confinement factor H 98( y ,2) in type I ELMy H-mode baseline plasmas is generally lower in JET-ILW compared to JET-C at low power fractions P loss / P thr,08 2, the confinement in JET-ILW hybrid plasmas is similar to that in JET-C. A reduction in pedestal pressure is the main reason for the reduced confinement in JET-ILW baseline ELMy H-mode plasmas where typically H 98( y ,2) = 0.8 is obtained, compared to H 98( y ,2) = 1.0 in JET-C. In JET-ILW hybrid plasmas a similarly reduced pedestal pressure is compensated by an increased peaking of the core pressure profile resulting in H 98( y ,2) ⩽ 1.25. The pedestal stability has significantly changed in high triangularity baseline plasmas where the confinement loss is also most apparent. Applying the same stability analysis for JET-C and JET-ILW, the measured pedestal in JET-ILW is stable with respect to the calculated peeling ballooning stability limit and the ELM collapse time has increased to 2 ms from typically 200 µ s in JET-C. This indicates that changes in the pedestal stability may have contributed to the reduced pedestal confinement in JET-ILW plasmas. A comparison of EPED1 pedestal pressure prediction with JET-ILW experimental data in over 500 JET-C and JET-ILW baseline and hybrid plasmas shows a good agreement with 0.8

Various approaches to high performance and steady state operation are presented. Strong neutral beam heating in the current ramp leads to internal transport barriers (ITBs) in conjunction with negative central magnetic shear. To avoid the destabilization of external kink modes this regime is limited to L mode edge operation with βN 1 leads to the formation of an electron ITB.

On the one hand, MHD instabilities in advanced tokamak scenarios are favourable as they can contribute to the stationarity of the current profiles and act as a trigger for the formation of internal transport barriers (ITBs). In particular, fishbone oscillations driven by fast particles arising from NBI are shown to trigger ITBs in low and reversed magnetic shear discharges. During the whistling down period of the fishbone oscillation the transport is reduced around the corresponding rational surface, leading to an increased pressure gradient. This behaviour could be explained by the redistribution of the resonant fast particles resulting in a sheared plasma rotation due to the return current in the bulk plasma, which is equivalent to a radial electric field. On the other hand, MHD instabilities limit the accessible operating regime. Ideal and resistive MHD modes such as double tearing modes, infernal modes and external kinks degrade the confinement or even lead to disruptions in ASDEX Upgrade reversed shear discharges. Localized electron cyclotron heating and current drive are shown to significantly affect the MHD stability of this type of discharge.

A reduction in turbulent density fluctuations is observed in internal transport barrier (ITB) discharges in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak with an L-mode edge and reversed magnetic shear. The turbulence reduction is localized spatially to around the ITB gradient and the ITB foot-point region, coincident with strong shearing in the toroidal rotation velocity. The radial extent and degree of reduction is related to the strength of the ITB. Strong (narrow and steep) ITBs are well localized and display greater turbulence reduction. Weaker ITBs are less localized with less reduction. The formation of a subsequent H-mode edge barrier moves the velocity shearing region to the edge and weakens the ITB to the point of extinction. During the ITB the turbulence is reduced across a broad frequency range, however a residual level of low-frequency fluctuations (f

Modulated Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating was applied in ASDEX Upgrade to study the electron heat diffusivity χ e . Its dependence on the isotope mass was found to be opposite to that one known from the power balance analysis. Off-axis ECRH deposition leads to a reduced electron heat transport in the centre which cannot be explained by an inward heat pinch. Electron Cyclotron Current Drive was applied to completely stabilise a (3/2)-neoclassical tearing mode with a consequent recovery of the plasma energy. High electron and ion temperatures have been simultaneously achieved by application of central counter ECCD in a discharge with an internal ion transport barrier.

The radiative improved (RI) mode is a tokamak regime offering many attractive reactor features. In the article, the RI mode of TEXTOR-94 is shown to follow the same scaling as the linear ohmic confinement regime and is thus identified as one of the most fundamental tokamak operational regimes. The current understanding derived from experiments and modelling of the conditions necessary for sustaining the mode is reviewed, as are the mechanisms leading to L-RI mode transition. The article discusses the compatibility of high impurity seeding with the low central power density of a burning reactor, as well as RI mode properties at and beyond the Greenwald density.

The injection of hydrogen/deuterium pellets into a tokamak leads to a sudden increase in the electron density, and subsequently to a profile peaking of the density and an increase in the stored energy. Immediately after the injection, different types of oscillations are excited. On TEXTOR, the first type immediately follows the injection and the second one is excited with a delay of more than 10 ms. The oscillations show a `snake-like' structure and occur close to the q = 1 surface with a frequency of 0.7 - 2 kHz. The radial location of the second oscillation is slightly shifted with respect to the first one. A fast-cooling phenomenon (`pre-cooling') in the core region of a plasma is often observed at pellet ablation phase. A study on the relation between the `pre-cooling' and sawtooth oscillations suggests that the central value of safety factor of plasmas, q(0), is kept sufficiently below unity even just after the sawtooth crash. During pellet injection, the ablation rate is strongly modulated; these modulations cause so-called `striations' in the ablation cloud. One model relates the striations to the energy reservoir on the plasma flux surfaces and describes the possibility of deriving the q-profile; the question of whether this method provides reliable results cannot yet be answered conclusively. The trajectory of the pellet in the plasma is in general not straight but deflected in the electron drift direction (OH discharges) or in the ion drift direction (CO-NBI discharges). The cloud develops a helically structured tail in the electron flow direction (toroidally) and in the electron diamagnetic drift direction (poloidally). The tail structure is attributed to charge-exchange processes and to plasma rotation.

JET underwent a transformation from a full carbon-dominated tokamak to a fully metallic device with beryllium in the main chamber and a tungsten divertor. This material combination is foreseen for the activated phase of ITER. The ITER-Like Wall (ILW) experiment at JET shall demonstrate the plasma compatibility with metallic walls and the reduction in fuel retention. We report on a set of experiments (Ip = 2.0 MA, Bt = 2.0-2.4 T, δ = 0.2-0.4) in different confinement and plasma conditions with global gas balance analysis demonstrating a strong reduction in the long-term retention rate by more than a factor of 10 with respect to carbon-wall reference discharges. All experiments are executed in a series of identical plasma discharges in order to achieve maximum plasma duration until the analysis limit of the active gas handling system is reached. The composition analysis shows high purity of the recovered gas, typically 99% D. For typical L-mode discharges (Paux = 0.5 MW), type III (Paux = 5.0 MW) and type-I ELMy H-mode plasmas (Paux = 12.0 MW) a drop of the deuterium retention rate normalized to the operational time in divertor configuration is measured from 1.27 × 1021, 1.37 × 1021 and 1.97 × 1021 D s-1 down to 4.8 × 1019, 7.2 × 1019 and 16 × 1019 D s-1, respectively. The dynamic retention increases in the limiter phase in comparison with carbon-fibre composite, but also the outgassing after the discharge has risen in the same manner and overcompensates this transient retention. Overall an upper limit of the long-term retention rate of 1.5 × 1020 D s-1 is obtained with the ILW. The observed reduction by one order of magnitude confirms the expected predictions concerning the plasma-facing material change in ITER and is in line with identification of fuel co-deposition with Be as the main mechanism for the residual long-term retention. The reduction widens the operational space without active cleaning in the DT phase in comparison with a full carbon device. © 2013 IAEA, Vienna.

Joint experiments investigating the off-axis neutral beam current drive (NBCD) capability to be utilized for advanced operation scenario development in ITER were conducted in four tokamaks (ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), DIII-D, JT-60U and MAST) through the international tokamak physics activity (ITPA). The following results were obtained in the joint experiments, where the toroidal field, B t, covered 0.4–3.7 T, the plasma current, I p, 0.5–1.2 MA, and the beam energy, E b, 65–350 keV. A current profile broadened by off-axis NBCD was observed in MAST. In DIII-D and JT-60U, the NB driven current profile has been evaluated using motional Stark effect diagnostics and good agreement between the measured and calculated NB driven current profile was observed. In AUG (at low δ ∼ 0.2) and DIII-D, introduction of a fast-ion diffusion coefficient of D b ∼ 0.3–0.5 m2 s−1 in the calculation gave better agreement at high heating power (5 MW and 7.2 MW, respectively), suggesting anomalous transport of fast ions by turbulence. It was found through these ITPA joint experiments that NBCD related physics quantities reasonably agree with calculations (with D b = 0–0.5 m2 s−1) in all devices when there is no magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) activity except ELMs. Proximity of measured off-axis beam driven current to the corresponding calculation with D b = 0 has been discussed for ITER in terms of a theoretically predicted scaling of fast-ion diffusion that depends on E b/T e for electrostatic turbulence or βt for electromagnetic turbulence.

Detailed experimental studies of ion heat transport have been carried out in JET exploiting the upgrade of active charge exchange spectroscopy and the availability of multi-frequency ion cyclotron resonance heating with 3He minority. The determination of ion temperature gradient (ITG) threshold and ion stiffness offers unique opportunities for validation of the well-established theory of ITG driven modes. Ion stiffness is observed to decrease strongly in the presence of toroidal rotation when the magnetic shear is sufficiently low. This effect is dominant with respect to the well-known ω E×B threshold up-shift and plays a major role in enhancing core confinement in hybrid regimes and ion internal transport barriers. The effects of T e/T i and s/q on ion threshold are found rather weak in the domain explored. Quasi-linear fluid/gyro-fluid and linear/non-linear gyro-kinetic simulations have been carried out. Whilst threshold predictions show good match with experimental observations, some significant discrepancies are found on the stiffness behaviour.

The ASDEX Upgrade programme is directed towards physics input to critical elements of the ITER design and the preparation of ITER operation, as well as addressing physics issues for a future DEMO design. After the finalization of the tungsten coating of the plasma facing components, the re-availability of all flywheel-generators allowed high-power operation with up to 20 MW heating power at I p up to 1.2 MA. Implementation of alternative ECRH schemes (140 GHz O2- and X3-mode) facilitated central heating above n e = 1.2 × 1020 m−3 and low q 95 operation at B t = 1.8 T. Central O2-mode heating was successfully used in high P/R discharges with 20 MW total heating power and divertor load control with nitrogen seeding. Improved energy confinement is obtained with nitrogen seeding both for type-I and type-III ELMy conditions. The main contributor is increased plasma temperature, no significant changes in the density profile have been observed. This behaviour may be explained by higher pedestal temperatures caused by ion dilution in combination with a pressure limited pedestal and hollow nitrogen profiles. Core particle transport simulations with gyrokinetic calculations have been benchmarked by dedicated discharges using variations of the ECRH deposition location. The reaction of normalized electron density gradients to variations of temperature gradients and the T e/T i ratio could be well reproduced. Doppler reflectometry studies at the L–H transition allowed the disentanglement of the interplay between the oscillatory geodesic acoustic modes, turbulent fluctuations and the mean equilibrium E × B flow in the edge negative E r well region just inside the separatrix. Improved pedestal diagnostics revealed also a refined picture of the pedestal transport in the fully developed H-mode type-I ELM cycle. Impurity ion transport turned out to be neoclassical in between ELMs. Electron and energy transport remain anomalous, but exhibit different recovery time scales after an ELM. After recovery of the pre-ELM profiles, strong fluctuations develop in the gradients of n e and T e. The occurrence of the next ELM cannot be explained by the local current diffusion time scale, since this turns out to be too short. Fast ion losses induced by shear Alfvén eigenmodes have been investigated by time-resolved energy and pitch angle measurements. This allowed the separation of the convective and diffusive loss mechanisms.

Modification of the two existing DIII-D neutral beamlines is planned to allow vertical steering to provide off-axis neutral beam current drive (NBCD) peaked as far off-axis as half the plasma minor radius. New calculations for a downward-steered beam indicate strong current drive with good localization off-axis so long as the toroidal magnetic field, B T, and the plasma current, I p, point in the same direction. This is due to good alignment of neutral beam injection (NBI) with the local pitch of the magnetic field lines. This model has been tested experimentally on DIII-D by injecting equatorially mounted NBs into reduced size plasmas that are vertically displaced with respect to the vessel midplane. The existence of off-axis NBCD is evident in the changes seen in sawtooth behaviour in the internal inductance. By shifting the plasma upwards or downwards, or by changing the sign of the toroidal field, off-axis NBCD profiles measured with motional Stark effect data and internal loop voltage show a difference in amplitude (40–45%) consistent with differences predicted by the changed NBI alignment with respect to the helicity of the magnetic field lines. The effects of NBI direction relative to field line helicity can be large even in ITER: off-axis NBCD can be increased by more than 30% if the B T direction is reversed. Modification of the DIII-D NB system will strongly support scenario development for ITER and future tokamaks as well as provide flexible scientific tools for understanding transport, energetic particles and heating and current drive.

A new technique has been developed to produce plasmas with improved confinement relative to the H98,y2 scaling law (ITER Physics Expert Groups on Confinement and Transport and Confinement Modelling and Database ITER Physics Basics Editors and ITER EDA 1999 Nucl. Fusion 39 2175) on the JET tokamak. In the mid-size tokamaks ASDEX upgrade and DIII-D heating during the current formation is used to produce a flat q-profile with a minimum close to 1. On JET this technique leads to q-profiles with similar minimum q but opposite to the other tokamaks not to an improved confinement state. By changing the method utilizing a faster current ramp with temporary higher current than in the flattop (current overshoot) plasmas with improved confinement (H98,y2 = 1.35) and good stability (βN ≈ 3) have been produced and extended to many confinement times only limited by technical constraints. The increase in H98,y2-factor is stronger with more heating power as can be seen in a power scan. The q-profile development during the high power phase in JET is reproduced by current diffusion calculated by TRANSP and CRONOS. Therefore the modifications produced by the current overshoot disappear quickly from the edge but the confinement improvement lasts longer, in some cases up to the end of the heating phase.

The effect of a toroidal field (TF) ripple on the formation and performance of internal transport barriers (ITBs) has been studied in JET. It was found that the TF ripple had a profound effect on the toroidal plasma rotation. An increased TF ripple up to δ = 1% led to a lower rotation and reduced the rotational shear in the region where the ITBs were formed. ITB triggering events were observed in all cases and it is thought that the rotational shear may be less important for this process than, for example, the q-profile. However, the increase in the pressure gradient following the ITB trigger was reduced in discharges with a larger TF ripple and consequently a lower rotational shear. This suggests that toroidal rotation and its shear play a role in the growth of the ITB once it has been triggered.

The pellet pacing ELM control concept developed at the mid sized tokamak ASDEX Upgrade is considered for the larger machines JET and ITER as well. By driving up the ELM frequency, the ELM size can be reduced and eventually suppressed below a dangerous level. An according pellet injection systems for JET is under construction, the ITER design includes one as well. However, it has still to be proven the concept will work also at bigger machine sizes. A step forward in this mission was achieved by re-analysing previous JET experiments dedicated to pellet particle fuelling. Although the experiments were performed in a parameter regime unsuitable for pellet ELM pacing both with respect to pellet frequency and size they demonstrate prompt triggering of ELMs takes place at JET as well. Prompt triggering, an indispensable premise for useful pacing, obviously can be achieved already with a pellet size sufficiently small to avoid unbearable side- effects by particle fuelling. An ELM released by the local perturbation imposed by the ablating pellet in the plasma edge region is detected when only a minor fraction (less than 1%) of the fuelling size pellets (containing about 4 10 21 D) was ablated and deposited yet. It is thus very likely JET will allow for investigations on the operational technique and the underlying physics of pellet pacing once the new system becomes operational.

In ITER, the requirement for the ICRF antenna is to deliver 20 MW in ELMy H‐mode plasmas with an averaged antenna—plasma separatrix distance of 14 cm [1]. Two major problems will have to be solved: the very fast change in antenna loading during ELMs and the decrease of the loading when the plasma is pushed far away from the antenna. JET has the capability to combine these conditions and for the first time, experiments were performed in ELMy H‐mode at antenna—separatrix distance, referred as ROG, varied from 10 to 14 cm. When ROG was increased, the perturbation caused by ELMs was found to decrease significantly and the loading between ELMs was found to deteriorate to very low values. In order to compensate the latter unwanted effect, different levels of deuterium gas were injected in the edge either from the divertor, the midplane or the top of the tokamak. Using this technique, the loading was increased by up to a factor 6 and up to 8 MW of ICRF power were coupled.

ASDEX Upgrade has recently finished its transition towards an all-W divertor tokamak, by the exchange of the last remaining graphite tiles to W-coated ones. The plasma start-up was performed without prior boronization. It was found that the large He content in the plasma, resulting from DC glow discharges for conditioning, leads to a confinement reduction. After the change to D glow for inter-shot conditioning, the He content quickly dropped and, in parallel, the usual H-Mode confinement with H factors close to one was achieved. After the initial conditioning phase, oxygen concentrations similar to that in previous campaigns with boronizations could be achieved. Despite the removal of all macroscopic carbon sources, no strong change in C influxes and C content could be observed so far. The W concentrations are similar to the ones measured previously in discharges with old boronization and only partial coverage of the surfaces with W. Concomitantly it is found that although the W erosion flux in the divertor is larger than the W sources in the main chamber in most of the scenarios, it plays only a minor role for the W content in the main plasma. For large antenna distances and strong gas puffing, ICRH power coupling could be optimized to reduce the W influxes. This allowed a similar increase of stored energy as yielded with comparable beam power. However, a strong increase of radiated power and a loss of H-Mode was observed for conditions with high temperature edge plasma close to the antennas. The use of ECRH allowed keeping the central peaking of the W concentration low and even phases of improved H-modes have already been achieved.

ASDEX Upgrade has demonstrated clear progress in ITER relevant plasma operation scenarios. Successful operation with about 70% Tungsten clad first wall is shown. The operation space of the improved H-mode (advanced tokamak scenario) is enlarged in safety factor 3lesq95 les5 and density 0.4lesne/nGWles0.9. The performance can clearly exceed the ITER reference value. At high densities type-II ELMs mitigate the peak power load in the divertor. A similar effect is achieved by increasing the type-I ELM frequency by shallow pellet injection or cyclic vertical plasma motion. Off-axis neutral beam current drive leads at low powers to a clear current density profile modification. Sawtooth tailoring by electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) can prevent the growth of neoclassical tearing modes (NTM). (3, 2) and (2, 1) NTMs excited at high plasma pressure can be stabilized by ECCD at moderate power levels. Narrow ECCD absorption profiles are more effective than broad ones

Injection of Lower Hybrid Heating and Current Drive (LHCD) into the current ramp-up phase of JET [Joint European Torus] discharges can produce extremely reversed q-profiles characterized by a core region of near zero current density (within Motional Stark Effect diagnostic measurement errors). Non-inductive, off-axis co-current drive induces a back electromotive force inside the non-inductive current radius that drives a negative current in the plasma core. The core current density does not go negative, although current diffusion calculations indicate that there is sufficient LHCD to cause this. The clamping of the core current density near zero is consistent with n=0 reconnection events redistributing the core current soon after it goes negative. This is seen in reduced MHD simulations and in nonlinear resistive MHD simulations which predict that these discharges undergo n=0 reconnection events that clamp the core current near zero.

In magnetic confinement devices the plasma confinement and stability are determined by the magnetic field configuration consisting of toroidal and poloidal field components. In tokamaks the poloidal magnetic field is determined by the profile of the toroidal current. In addition to the Faraday rotation polarimetry [1, 2] the Motional Stark Effect (MSE) has become a routine diagnostic technique to determine the current density distribution [3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11]. The MSE diagnostic utilizes the Doppler shifted neutral beam emission spectrum which is dominated by the Stark effect due to the electrical field experienced by the fast atoms in their rest frame which is mainly the Lorentz electric field \( \overrightarrow v _{beam} \times \overrightarrow B \). The orientation of this Lorentz electric field is measured, and incorporated in an equilibrium reconstruction, which yields profiles of poloidal magnetic field, current density, safety factor q or poloidal flux. In this paper the diagnostic principle and its implementation on ASDEX Upgrade and JET will be presented in sections two and three. The results of the diagnostic will be discussed in section 4 and the influence of another beam source on the measurement in section 5. Since the MSE diagnostic is sensitive to electric fields in general this opens the possibility to measure also internal electric fields such as the radial electric field [12, 13]. If E r /u beam becomes of the order of B pol then E r can no longer be neglected which is the case in particular for discharges with an internal transport barrier (ITB). The measurement of E r may also be applicable to stellarators where the magnetic field configuration deviates only slightly from the known vacuum configuration. The stronger field line curvature could however increase the requirements regarding the spatial resolution of a MSE diagnostic. First measurements of the radial electric field will be presented in section 6 and a summary will follow in section 7.

In JET discharges where lower hybrid heating and current drive (LHCD) is applied early during the current ramp, a region of the plasma with zero current density is formed near the axis. At the boundary of this region the current density is large and B? increases rapidly over a small distance. In the central region the safety factor, q, is effectively infinite, but this falls steeply in the boundary region. Outside the boundary region q reaches a minimum, where the magnetic shear s?r/q (dq/dr) becomes zero. The formation of this region of zero current is dependent on both the heating and the current drive effects of the LHCD. When LHCD is switched off the current profile begins to relax towards the resistive peaked current distribution of fully inductive tokamak operation. If LHCD is not used in the current rise then these current profiles are not established. Although the physical mechanism exists to drive the central plasma current below zero, in most cases it appears to be prevented from going negative. At least one MHD mechanism has been identified which could be responsible for this. The presence of the zero central current is closely linked to the periodic relaxation events seen in these discharges. In these discharges, internal transport barriers have been observed with additional heating powers substantially below the values required to obtain barriers in monotonic q profile cases.

In the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak, high poloidal beta up to beta(pol) = 3 at the Greenwald density with H-mode confinement has been reached. Because of the high beta, the plasma current is driven almost fully noninductively, consisting of 51% bootstrap and 43% neutral beam driven current. To reach these conditions the discharge is operated at low plasma current ( I(P) = 400 kA) and high neutral beam heating power ( P(NBI) = 10 MW). The discharge combines an edge (H mode) and internal transport barrier at high densities without confinement-limiting MHD activities. The extrapolation to higher plasma currents may offer a promising way for an advanced scenario based fusion reactor.

The thermal pattern onto the TEXTOR-94 toroidal limiter at the thermal quench for a set of four disruptions has been measured. A high temporal and spatial resolution camera, based on an infra-red 128 x 128 pixels focal plane array detector has been used to perform the measurements. Comparing the power profile for the same discharge as inferred from two images taken just before the disruption and at the thermal quench, it is possible to assess that: the radial exponential decay of the power flowing onto the limiter shows in both cases two different e-folding lengths, a short one (of the order of 2 mm or even less, in disruptive discharges) in the first few mm of the SOL depth and a larger one (1.5 cm) deeper in the SOL, An energy balance has been performed based on thermal images of both the limiter and the nearby wall during the thermal quench. Since its inception in 2002, the International Tokamak Physics Activity topical group on Integrated Operational Scenarios (IOS) has coordinated experimental and modelling activity on the development of advanced inductive scenarios for applications in the ITER tokamak. The physics basis and the prospects for applications in ITER have been advanced significantly during that time, especially with respect to experimental results. The principal findings of this research activity are as follows. Inductive scenarios capable of higher normalized pressure (beta(N)>= 2.4) than the ITER baseline scenario (beta(N) = 1.8) with normalized confinement at or above the standard H-mode scaling are well established under stationary conditions on the four largest diverted tokamaks (AUG, DIII-D, JET, JT-60U), demonstrated in a database of more than 500 plasmas from these tokamaks analysed here. The parameter range where high performance is achieved is broad in q(95) and density normalized to the empirical density limit. MHD modes can play a key role in reaching stationary high performance, but also define the limits to achieved stability and confinement. Projection of performance in ITER from existing experiments uses empirical scalings and theory-based modelling. The status of the experimental validation of both approaches is summarized here. The database shows significant variation in the energy confinement normalized to standard H-mode confinement scalings, indicating the possible influence of additional physics variables absent from the scalings. Tests using the available information on rotation and the ratio of the electron and ion temperatures indicate neither of these variables in isolation can explain the variation in normalized confinement observed. Trends in the normalized confinement with the two dimensionless parameters that vary most from present-day experiments to ITER, gyroradius and collision frequency, are significant. Regression analysis on the multi-tokamak database has been performed, but it appears that the database is not conditioned sufficiently well to yield a new scaling for this type of plasma. Coordinated experiments on size scaling using the dimensionless parameter scaling approach find a weaker scaling with normalized gyroradius than the standard H-mode scaling. Preliminary studies on scaling with collision frequency show a favourable scaling stronger than the standard H-mode scaling. Coordinated modelling activity has resulted in successful benchmarking of modelling codes in the ITER regime. Validation of transport models using these codes on present-day experiments is in progress, but no single model has been shown to capture the variations seen in the experiments. However, projection to ITER using these models is in general agreement with the favourable projections found with the empirical scalings.

A detailed analysis of experimental data from the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak is carried out to shed light on the properties of confinement and transport in the current ramp-up and ramp-down phases of the plasma discharge. The experimental database is used to identify the relevant ranges of parameters explored during the ramp-up and the ramp-down. The energy confinement time observed in the two ramps displays interesting evolution, in many cases attaining different values at the same current level between ramp-up and ramp-down. The possible reasons for this behaviour are investigated. Interpretative transport simulations are used as a tool to clarify the interplay between different parameters, which are coupled in a non-linear way. In addition, a theory-based transport model is used to understand the behaviour of confinement as observed in the experiment, evidencing the role of both turbulent and neoclassical transport. Linear gyrokinetic calculations are performed to identify the relevant turbulence regime, showing that a broad range of frequencies, in the trapped electron modes (TEMs) and in the ion temperature gradient modes (ITGs) regimes, is explored during both the ramp-up and ramp-down. In the same framework, a quasi-linear model is applied to calculate the value of the local logarithmic density gradient and compare it with the experimental value. Finally, first non-linear simulations of heat transport during the current ramps are presented.
