Purpose: Titanium (Ti) alloys have received considerable attention as materials for oral and maxillofacial surgery, which require high mechanical strength, osteosynthesis, and biocompatibility. The objective was to implant miniplates fabricated from commercially pure Ti (CP Ti) and newly developed Ti-silver (Ag) alloy in fractured mandibles of adult dogs after preliminary mechanical and biological characterization., Materials and Methods: The surface characteristics, biocompatibility, and pre-osteoblast adhesion and proliferation of CP Ti (grade 3) and Ti-Ag (2 at% Ag) alloys were evaluated. Next, the bending strength of 6- and 8-hole miniplates fabricated from CP Ti and Ti-Ag was compared according to ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9585. Six-hole miniplates were implanted for 12 weeks in fractured mandibles of adult dogs. The Ag ion concentration in each alloy and implanted bone block with soft tissue was measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy after euthanasia according to ISO 10993-12., Results: Precipitated Ag was detected in Ti-Ag by alpha- and beta-phase Ti in x-ray powder diffraction. The biocompatibility with pre-osteoblasts of Ti-Ag and CP Ti was comparable in terms of cytotoxicity, cell adhesion, and proliferation (P > .05). Ti-Ag miniplates had up to 3-fold greater bending strength than CP Ti miniplates (P < .05). An in vivo study showed that CP Ti and Ti-Ag miniplates had comparable soft and hard tissue regeneration ability (P > .05). Ag ions were detected in Ti-Ag alloys and applied mandible blocks., Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that Ti-Ag alloys can be used to produce miniplates with high mechanical properties, as well as considerable biocompatibility, osteosynthesis ability, and Ag ion-release properties. We prepared TiO2 nanotubes (NT) on commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) substrate by plasma electrolyte oxidation and adapted magnetron sputtering for incorporation of Ag-nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) onto the nanotubes (Ag-NPs/TiO2 nanotube). Power input to the Ag target per unit time was varied (5, 10, 15 W/cm2) to fabricate different shapes of Agnanoparticles onto the nanotubes while net energy input was fixed by maintaining a constant total sputter time (30, 15, 10 s, respectively). For investigation of experimental samples' characteristics, FE-SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, SPM analysis and contact angles measurement was carried out. Through these characterization, plasma engineered Ag-NPs was successfully formed on/in the entire nanotube structure. In terms of antibacterial ability, plasma engineered Ag-NPs/TiO2 nanotubes samples significantly reduced S. aureus colony numbers compared with control. Also, simulated body fluid immersion tests with hydroxyapatite showed ion precipitation onto the surface of all experimental groups, confirmed by XRD and EDS analysis. However, plasma engineered Ag-NPs/TiO2 nanotubes groups were not cytotoxic. Furthermore, MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on Ag-NPs/TiO2 nanotubes groups to evaluate the effect of nanostructured surface on cell functionality such as a cell proliferation and ALP activity. Ag-NPs/TiO2 nanotubes have both biocompatible and antibacterial characteristics.

Titanium oxide nanotube layer formed by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is known to be excellent in biomaterial applications. However, the annealing process which is commonly performed on the TiO2 nanotubes cause defects in the nanotubular structure. The purpose of this work was to apply a non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet on diameter-controlled TiO2 nanotubes to mimic the effects of annealing while maintaining the tubular structure for use as biomaterial. Diameter-controlled nanotube samples fabricated by plasma electrolytic oxidation were dried and prepared under three different conditions: untreated, annealed at 450 °C for 1 h in air with a heating rate of 10 °C/min, and treated with an air-based non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet for 5 minutes. The contact angle measurement was investigated to confirm the enhanced hydrophilicity of the TiO2 nanotubes. The chemical composition of the surface was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the morphology of TiO2 nanotubes was examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy. For the viability of the cell, the attachment of the osteoblastic cell line MC3T3-E1 was determined using the water-soluble tetrazolium salt assay. We found that there are no morphological changes in the TiO2 nanotubular structure after the plasma treatment. Also, we investigated a change in the chemical composition and enhanced hydrophilicity which result in improved cell behavior. The results of this study indicated that the non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet results in osteoblast functionality that is comparable to annealed samples while maintaining the tubular structure of the TiO2 nanotubes. Therefore, this study concluded that the use of a non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet on nanotube surfaces may replace the annealing process following plasma electrolytic oxidation.

Objective: Although dental implants are commonly used for tooth restoration, there is a lack of studies of treatment regimens for preventing extra-oral infection and decreasing osseointegration failures by establishing early peri-implant soft tissue seals on titanium dental implant abutments. In this study, air atmospheric-pressure plasma-jet (AAPPJ) treatment was applied to titanium disks to assay the potential for early peri-implant soft tissue seals on titanium dental implant abutment., Materials and Methods: After titanium disks were treated with AAPPJ for 10 s at 250, 500, 1000 and 1500 sccm, surface analysis was performed; the control group received air only or no treatment. Human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) were seeded onto the specimens for evaluating cell attachment and proliferation and adherent-cell morphology was visualized via confocal microscopy., Results: In AAPPJ-treated specimens, the water contact angle decreased according to increased flow rate. Oxygen composition increased in XPS, but no topographical changes were detected. The effect of AAPPJ treatment at 1000 sccm was apparent 2 mm from the treated spot, with a 20% increase in early cell attachment and proliferation. Adherent HGF on AAPPJ-treated specimens displayed a stretched phenotype with more vinculin formation than the control group., Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, the results indicate that AAPPJ treatment may enhance the early attachment and proliferation of HGF for establishing early peri-implant soft tissue seals on titanium dental implant abutments with possible favorable effects of osseointegration of dental implant.

The surface topography and chemistry of titanium implants are important factors for successful osseointegration. However, chemical modification of an implant surface using currently available methods often results in the disruption of topographical features and the loss of beneficial effects during the shelf life of the implant. Therefore, the aim of this study was to apply the recently highlighted portable non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet (NTAPPJ), elicited from one of two different gas sources (nitrogen and air), to TiO2 nanotube surfaces to further improve their osteogenic properties while preserving the topographical morphology. The surface treatment was performed before implantation to avoid age-related decay. The surface chemistry and morphology of the TiO2 nanotube surfaces before and after the NTAPPJ treatment were determined using a field-emission scanning electron microscope, a surface profiler, a contact angle goniometer, and an X-ray photoelectron spectroscope. The MC3T3-E1 cell viability, attachment and morphology were confirmed using calcein AM and ethidium homodimer-1 staining, and analysis of gene expression using rat mesenchymal stem cells was performed using a real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. The results indicated that both portable nitrogen- and air-based NTAPPJ could be used on TiO2 nanotube surfaces easily and without topographical disruption. NTAPPJ resulted in a significant increase in the hydrophilicity of the surfaces as well as changes in the surface chemistry, which consequently increased the cell viability, attachment and differentiation compared with the control samples. The nitrogen-based NTAPPJ treatment group exhibited a higher osteogenic gene expression level than the air-based NTAPPJ treatment group due to the lower atomic percentage of carbon on the surface that resulted from treatment. It was concluded that NTAPPJ treatment of TiO2 nanotube surfaces results in an increase in cellular activity. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that this treatment leads to improved osseointegration in vitro.

Objectives: The modification of dental implant surface by increasing the surface roughness or/and altering chemical composition have been attempted. Among them, hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings are typically bioactive. On the other hand, titania coatings have good corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Therefore, the objective of this study was to fabricate HA containing a titania layer using an HA blasting and anodization method to benefit from the advantages of both, followed by surface characterization and biocompatibility., Materials and Methods: HA blasting was performed followed by microarc oxidation (MAO) using various applied voltages (100, 150, 200, 250 V). For surface characterization, the microstructure of the surface, surface phase and surface roughness were observed. Bonding strength was measured using a universal testing machine and potentiodynamic corrosion testing was performed. Biocompatibility was evaluated based on bioactivity and cell proliferation test., Results: The porous titanium oxide-containing HA was formed at 150 and 200 V. These surfaces were a lower corrosion current compared to the titanium treated only with HA blasting. In addition, composite treated titanium showed a rougher surface and tighter bonding strength compared to the titanium treated only with MAO. Biocompatibility demonstrated that HA/Titania composite layer on titanium showed a rapid HA precipitation and also enhanced cell proliferation., Conclusions: These results suggested that HA containing titania layer on titanium had not only excellent physicochemical, mechanical and electrochemical properties, but also improved bioactivity and biological properties that could be applied as material for a dental implant system.

We investigated whether a silver coating on an anodic oxidized titania (TiO2) nanotube surface would be useful for preventing infections in dental implants. We used a magnetron sputtering process to deposit Ag nanoparticles onto a TiO2 surface. We studied different sputtering input power densities and maintained other parameters constant. We used scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and contact angle measurements to characterize the coated surfaces. Staphylococcus aureus was used to evaluate antibacterial activity. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed peaks that corresponded to metallic Ag, Ti, O, and biocompatible anatase phase TiO2 on the examined surfaces. The contact angles of the Ag nanoparticle-loaded surfaces were significantly lower at 2.5 W/cm2 input power under pulsed direct current mode compared to commercial, untreated Ti surfaces. In vitro antibacterial analysis indicated that a significantly reduced number of S. aureus were detected on an Ag nanoparticle-loaded TiO2 nanotube surface compared to control untreated surfaces. No cytotoxicity was noted, except in the group treated with 5 W/cm2 input power density, which was the highest input of power density we tested for the magnetron sputtering process. Overall, we concluded that it was feasible to create antibacterial Ag nanoparticle-loaded titanium nanotube surfaces with magnetron sputtering.

To reduce the incidence of postsurgical bacterial infection that may cause implantation failure at the implant-bone interface, surface treatment of titanium implants with antibiotic materials such as silver (Ag) has been proposed. The purpose of this work was to create TiO2 nanotubes using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), followed by formation of an antibacterial Ag nanostructure coating on the TiO2 nanotube layer using a magnetron sputtering system. PEO was performed on commercially pure Ti sheets. The Ag nanostructure was added onto the resulting TiO2 nanotube using magnetron sputtering at varying deposition rates. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the surface, and Ag content on the TiO2 nanotube layer was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Scanning probe microscopy for surface roughness and contact angle measurement were used to indirectly confirm enhanced TiO2 nanotube hydrophilicity. Antibacterial activity of Ag ions in solution was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and antibacterial testing against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). In vitro, TiO2 nanotubes coated with sputtered Ag resulted in significantly reduced S. aureus. Cell viability assays showed no toxicity for the lowest sputtering time group in the osteoblastic cell line MC3T3-E1. These results suggest that a multinanostructured layer with a biocompatible TiO2 nanotube and antimicrobial Ag coating is a promising biomaterial that can be tailored with magnetron sputtering for optimal performance., (Copyright © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Dental implant failure often occurs due to oral bacterial infection. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that antibiotic efficacy could be enhanced with modified titanium. First, the titanium was modified by anodization and heat-treatment. Then, a biomimetic coating process was completed in two steps. Surface characterization was performed with scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Release of antibiotic was evaluated by UV/VIS spectrometry, and the antibacterial effect was evaluated on Streptococcus mutans. After the second coating step, we observed a thick homogeneous apatite layer that contained the antibiotic, cefalotin. The titanium formed a rutile phase after the heat treatment, and a carbonated apatite phase appeared after biomimetic coating. We found that the modified titanium increased the loading of cefalotin onto the hydroxyapatite coated surface. The results suggested that modified titanium coated with a cefalotin using biomimetic coating method might be useful for preventing local post-surgical implant infections.

The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effect and cytocompatibility of a nano-structured TiO2 film that contained Cl and had been coated onto commercially pure titanium. First, we prepared nano-structured TiO2 by anodization with hydrofluoric acid. Then, to confer an antibacterial effect, we performed a second anodization with NaCl solutions of different concentrations (0.5 M, 1 M, 2 M). The morphology, composition, and wettability of the surface were investigated by SEM, EDS, and a video contact angle measuring system. The antibacterial effect was evaluated by film adhesion method. And cytotoxicity was determined by the viability of MG-63 cells in a MTT assay. The SEM and EDS results showed that the TiO2 nano-structure containing Cl had successfully formed after the second anodization. The contact angle analysis showed that the anodized titanium had a hydrophilic character. The results of this in vitro investigation demonstrated that the TiO2 nano-structure film anodized in 1 M NaCl had an antibacterial effect and good cell compatibility.

The aim of this study was to develop Ti-Ag-Cu alloys with a higher corrosion resistance, better biocompatibility, and better mechanical properties than commercially pure titanium and its alloys. The microstructure, corrosion resistance, mechanical property and cytotoxicity of the Ti-Ag-Cu alloys were investigated. The corrosion resistance was evaluated by open circuit potential measurements and potentiodynamic polarization tests in artificial saliva at 37 degrees C. The mechanical properties were evaluated using tensile and microhardness tests. The biocompatibility was tested by evaluating the cytotoxicity of the alloys using an agar-overlay test and MTT assay. It was found that the open circuit potentials of the Ti-Ag-Cu alloys were higher than that of pure Ti. However, the passive current densities of the Ti-Ag-Cu alloys were similar to that of pure titanium. The mechanical properties improved with increasing Ag and Cu content. All the Ti-Ag-Cu alloys examined were found to be noncytotoxic similar to pure Ti. Therefore, Ti-Ag-Cu alloys can be used as biomaterials in the dental field., ((c) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

The purpose of this study was to develop Ti-Au alloys with a higher resistant to corrosion, better biocompatibility, and better mechanical properties than the commercially pure titanium and its alloys. Ti-Au alloys were designed with a gold content that ranged from 0 to 5.0 at % in steps of 1.0 at %. Properties of the alloys including chemical composition, microstructure, phase, hardness, electrochemical properties, and the cytotoxicity were investigated. Only the alpha phase existed in the Ti-Au alloys. The addition of gold to the titanium decreased the alpha to beta transformation temperature. The acicular alpha phase became thinner and the hardness value increased with increasing gold content. In the electrochemical tests, Ti-Au alloys had a higher resistant to corrosion than had pure titanium and did not exhibit pitting corrosion in artificial saliva. The cytotoxicities of the Ti-Au alloys were similar to that of pure titanium. Therefore, Ti-Au alloys could be used as biomaterials in the medical and dental fields.

When irradiated under near-ultraviolet (UV) light, TiO(2) exhibits strong bactericidal activity. The TiO(2) photocatalyst would be effective on orthodontic appliances after its antibacterial effect on the carcinogenic microorganism Lactobacillus acidophilus is evaluated. To compare the antibacterial effect of two crystalline forms of TiO(2), rutile and anatase, thermal oxidation and anodic oxidation were employed to form each structure, respectively. The antibacterial effect of TiO(2) film on TiAg was also compared with that on Ti. Bacterial solutions were pipetted onto the TiO(2)-coated specimen and illuminated with UVA (2 x 15 W, black light, 356 nm) up to 100 min and the reaction solutions were incubated to count the colony-forming units. The antibacterial activity of the coated specimens was similar to that of the uncoated group. The antibacterial activity of the coated specimens of TiAg was not different from that of Ti. Equiatomic and near-equiatomic nickel-titanium alloys exhibit a shape-memory effect and superelasticity. However, the properties of such alloys are extremely sensitive to the precise nickel-titanium ratio and the addition of alloying elements. High corrosion resistance is necessary for biomedical applications, especially orthodontic. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of silver addition to nickel-titanium alloys for dental and medical application. Arc melting, homogenization, hot rolling, and solution heat treatment were performed to prepare the nickel-titanium-silver (NiTi-Ag) specimens. The properties of the ternary NiTi-Ag alloys such as phase-transformation temperature, microstructure, microhardness, corrosion resistance, and cytotoxicity were investigated. The NiTi-Ag alloys showed low silver recovery rate for the cast alloy, due to silver's low evaporation temperature, and low silver solubility in nickel-titanium. Silver addition to nickel-titanium increased the transition temperature range to 100 degrees C and stabilized the martensitic phase (monoclinic structure) at room temperature, because the martensitic transformation starting temperature (Ms) was above room temperature. Martensitic and austenitic phases existed in X-ray diffraction patterns of solution-annealed NiTi-Ag alloys. The silver addition was considered to improve the corrosion resistance and form a stable passive film. Significantly, the mechanical properties of the silver-added alloys were dependent upon the amount of alloying addition. The purpose of this study was to develop titanium-silver alloys with biocompatibility, high corrosion resistance, and low ion-release rate, and to evaluate the electrochemical properties of titanium-silver alloys in artificial saliva. Titanium-silver alloys with silver contents ranging from 0 to 4.5 at % in steps of 0.5 at % were designed. The alloys were arc melted, homogenized at 950 degrees C for 72 h, hot rolled to 2 mm in thickness, and finally solution heat treated at 950 degrees C for 1 h and quenched in water. Chemical compositions, phases, hardnesses, electrochemical properties, and the cytotoxicity of the alloys were investigated. The purity of titanium-silver alloys was maintained above 99.9%, because few impurities were introduced through their manufacture. In the case of alloys containing silver in the range 2.0-4.0 at %, the formation of an acicular alpha phase was observed inside the beta phase. The acicular phase got thinner with increasing amounts of silver. This means that silver is a beta-phase stabilizing element in titanium-silver alloys. The hardness value tended to rise with increasing silver content and increased largely over 3.5 at %, and the increase of the hardness value versus pure titanium was about 33%. It is believed that the substantial increases in hardness was due to the effects of solid solution strengthening and of alpha-beta phase transition. Moreover, titanium-silver alloys had higher corrosion resistances than pure titanium. These results mean that silver additions to titanium can improve alloy corrosion resistance. Passive current densities in the potentiodynamic polarization curves were dependent on the chemical compositions of the titanium-silver alloys. However, they did not show a linear relationship with respect to silver contents. Titanium-silver alloys did not show pitting corrosion in artificial saliva. It is believed that silver addition to titanium strengthened the passive film due to titanium dissolution induced by the different electromotive forces of titanium and silver. In the agar overlay test, the cytotoxicity of the titanium-silver alloys and of titanium were none or mild. In summary, titanium-silver alloys had higher mechanical properties and corrosion resistance than titanium, and toxicities that were similar to titanium. Dental gels and rinses for caries prophylactic contain fluoride at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 1%. In addition, many types of fluoride-releasing materials have been used in dental applications. The purpose of the study was to investigate the addition effect of fluoride into artificial saliva on the corrosion resistance of pure titanium and titanium-silver alloys. Titanium and titanium-silver alloys were arc melted, homogenized at 950 degrees C for 72 h, hot rolled, and solution heat treated and quenched. In order to investigate the effect of the fluoride ions on the corrosion resistance, potentiodynamic polarization testing, potentiostatic testing, and open-circuit potential measurements were performed in plain artificial saliva and 0.1 and 1% NaF-added artificial saliva. The passive current densities of titanium and titanium-silver alloys increased with increasing fluoride-ion concentration. Ti2.0Ag and Ti3.0Ag exhibited a low current density relatively and showed a stable behavior compared to titanium. The open-circuit potential of titanium decreased and current density at 250 mV (SCE) potentiostatic testing reacted sensitively with increasing fluoride concentration. On the other hand, the open-circuit potential of titanium-silver alloys with a high silver content (3.0-4.0 at %) reacted less sensitively to the fluoride-ion concentration. Among titanium-silver alloys, Ti3.0Ag alloy had a higher resistance against the attack of fluoride ions and showed a more stable open-circuit potential and current density than titanium in the fluoride-containing solution. In recent years, dental implants have been widely used for the aesthetic and functional restoration of edentulous patients. Dental implants and restorative alloys are required with high corrosion resistance. Suprastructures and implants of different compositions in electrical contact may develop galvanic or coupled corrosion problems. In addition to galvanic corrosion, crevice and pitting corrosion may occur in the marginal gap between dental implant assemblies. In this study, gold, silver-palladium, cobalt-chromium, and nickel-chromium suprastructures were used to investigate their galvanic and crevice corrosion characteristics in combination with titanium (Ti) implants. Potentiodynamic and potentiostatic testing were performed in artificial saliva at 37 degrees C. Potentiodynamic testing was carried out at the potential scan rate of 1 mV/s in the range of -600-1600 mV (SCE). Potentiostatic testing was performed with an open-circuit potential and current densities at -250, 0, and 250 mV (SCE) in artificial saliva. After electrochemical testing, surface morphologies and cross-sections were examined using micrographs of the samples. Potentiodynamic test results indicated that suprastructure/Ti implant couples produced passive current densities in the range of 0.5-12 microA/cm(2); Ti abutment/Ti implant and gold/Ti implant couples exhibited relatively low passive current densities; Co-Cr/Ti implant couples the highest. Co-Cr and Ni-Cr/Ti implant couples showed breakdown potentials of 700 and 570 mV (SCE), respectively. The open-circuit potentials of silver, Ti abutment, gold, Ni-Cr, and Co-Cr/Ti implant couples were -93.2 +/- 93.9, -123.7 +/- 58.8, -140.0 +/- 80.6, -223.5 +/- 35.1, and -312.7 +/- 29.8 mV (SCE), respectively, and did not change with immersion time. The couples exhibited cathodic current densities at -250 mV (SCE); in particular, gold and silver alloys showed high cathodic current densities of -3.18 and -6.63 microA/cm(2), respectively. At 250 mV (SCE), Ti abutment/Ti implant couples exhibited a minimum current density of 9.48 x 10(-2) microA/cm(2), but gold, Ni-Cr, Co-Cr, and silver/Ti implant couples exhibited 0.313, 1.27, 5.60, and 8.06 microA/cm(2), respectively. All couples exhibited relatively low current densities at 0 mV (SCE). Photomicrographs after electrochemical testing showed crevice or pitting corrosion in the marginal gap and at the suprastructure surface. Although of the tested samples Co-Cr/Ti implant couples showed the possibility of galvanic corrosion, its degree was not significant. However, it should be borne in mind that galvanic corrosion can accelerate localized corrosion, such as crevice or pitting corrosion., (Copyright 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial effect and cytotoxicity of titanium anodized in two different solutions: sodium chloride (NaCl) solution and sodium chloride (NaCl)+calcium acetate (CA)+ß-glycerol phosphate disodium salt pentahydrate (ß-GP) mixed solution. The results showed that the titanium anodized in NaCl+CA+ß-GP solution had an increased antibacterial effect compared with commercially pure titanium. In addition, cytocompatibility was improved for titanium anodized in the mixed solution compared with titanium anodized in NaCl. Therefore, this antibacterial, cytocompatible titanium is a promising material for use in dental implant systems. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This study examined the characteristics of calcium phosphate coatings formed on untreated and H2O2-treated titanium substrates by electrodeposition in a modified simulated body fluid (SBF). A porous coating comprising of mainly hydroxyapatite (HA) was formed on the H2O2-treated titanium substrate by electrodeposition. This coating was transformed into carbonate and calcium-deficient HA layers with a bonelike crystallinity during immersion in the SBF. However, a uniformed coating comprising of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) formed on the untreated titanium substrate by electrodeposition was transformed into poorly crystalline HA during immersion in the SBF. This difference was attributed to the increased surface area of the titanium substrate after the H2O2 treatment as well as the OH− ions released from this modified surface during electrodeposition. Therefore, it was shown that the H2O2 treatment prior to electrodeposition may be an effective method for preparing a potentially bioactive calcium phosphate coating by electrodeposition. Abstract: Biological integration of dental implants into the surrounding tissue determines clinical success and the attraction of bone cells. Titanium and its alloys are widely used biomaterials with high mechanical strength and excellent biocompatibility; nanotopographies are currently under investigation for efficiency in promoting cell functions. The purpose of this study was to carry out nanoporous anodic oxidation (NAO) surface treatment on titanium and to observe the responses of immortalized mouse embryonic (ME) cells. The titanium surface was modified in two ways; by NAO via hydrofluoric acid and by microporous anodic oxidation (MAO). The ME cells were solely obtained from mesenchymal mouse (embryonic day 14.5) molar tissue (tooth germ). Field emission scanning electron microscopy was used to visualize the titanium surface morphology as well as the attachment and morphological features of the ME cells. Cytotoxicity, cell proliferation, and alkaline phosphatase activity were assayed as well. The nano- and microporous structures of the modified titanium surfaces were well formed, with diameters of 100nm and 1–3μm, respectively. ME cells were well attached to the NAO and MAO treated surfaces, resulting in no cytotoxicity to ME cells. Cell proliferation was significantly higher for the cells at the NAO treated surface than cells at the MAO treated surface. Alkaline phosphatase activity on the NAO treated surface increased from 1 to 3weeks. Hence it was concluded that NAO treated surfaces provide an attractive substrate for ME cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation, and may serve as useful materials for the construction of dental implants.
