Aims: Dehydration is one of the common complications of dysphagia and poses significant risks including hospitalization and mortality, but the relationship between dysphagia and dehydration has received little attention. This study aims to determine the prevalence and risk factors for dehydration of patients with dysphagia in eastern China, and to provide reference for early identification and prevention of dehydration. Methods: A descriptive, cross‐sectional design was conducted. Three hundred and thirty‐seven (n = 337) patients with dysphagia participated in the study between August and December 2022. Information relating to participants' demographic variables, nutrition, cognition, functional, hydration status and fluid intake was collected. Univariate analysis was used to examine related impact factors, and then binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine reliable impact factors. Results: Among 337 patients with dysphagia, the average age was 63.47 ± 16.96, most participants were male (72.1%) and married (91.7%). The prevalence of dehydration was calculated to be 43.9%, the mean plasma osmolality score was 293.53 mmol/L. Diseases with the highest prevalence were stroke (78.3%), followed by hypertension (63.5%). The risk for dehydration increased with older age, usage of more medicines such as diuretics and beta‐blockers, worse functional status and lower fluid intake. Conclusion: This study found a high percentage of dehydration in patients with dysphagia. Findings can provide a basis for targeted nursing interventions for clinical prevention and treatment of dehydration. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Background: Misconceptions about male nurses not only exacerbate the gender imbalance in the nursing profession but also negatively impact male nurses embarking on their careers. Currently, no tool exists to measure the gender biases toward males in nursing among nursing students in China. Consequently, the primary objective of this study is to assess the validity and reliability of the Chinese translation of the Gender Misconceptions of Men in Nursing (GEMINI) scale among nursing students. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 1,102 nursing students from China who participated online. We utilized the Brislin translation technique with a forward-backward approach. To determine the factor structure within the Men in Nursing Gender Misconceptions Scale's Chinese version, both exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were applied. The scale's internal consistency was measured through the Cronbach's alpha coefficient, corrected item-total correlation, and a retest reliability assessment. Results: The scale showed a content validity index of 0.938 and a retest reliability of 0.844. EFA indicated a two-factor structure for the translated instrument. CFA revealed a chi-square/degree of freedom of 3.837, an incremental fit index (IFI) of 0.952, a goodness-of-fit index (GFI) of 0.910, a comparative fit index (CFI) of 0.952, and an RMSEA of 0.073, all of which were within acceptable limits. The scale's Cronbach's α was 0.953, and the corrected item-total correlations ranged between 0.539 and 0.838. Gender-based misconceptions about men in nursing among students appeared to be influenced by their gender and whether they considered a nursing program as their first choice when applying for a major. Misconceptions about male nurses are greater among men and those who do not consider nursing programs as their first choice when applying for a major. Conclusions: The Chinese adaptation of the GEMINI scale showcased high reliability and validity. Background: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) was widely used for the removal of esophageal tumors, and post-endoscopic submucosal dissection electrocoagulation syndrome (PEECS) was one of the postoperative adverse events. The aim of this research was to develop and validate a model to predict electrocoagulation syndrome after endoscopic submucosal dissection of esophageal tumors. Materials and methods: Patients who underwent esophageal ESD in our hospital were retrospectively included. A predictive nomogram was established based on the results of multivariate logistic regression analysis, and bootstrapping resampling was used for internal validation. Besides, the clinical usefulness of the nomogram was evaluated using decision curve analysis (DCA) and clinical impact curve. Results: A total of 552 patients who underwent esophageal ESD were included in the study, and the incidence of PPECS was 12.5% (69/552). Risk factors associated with PEECS (p < 0.1) were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression analysis, and the final model included four variables, namely gender, diabetes, tumor size and operation time. The predictive nomogram was constructed based on the above four variables, and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.811 (95% CI 0.767–0.855). The calibration curve of the nomogram presented good agreement between the predicted and actual probabilities. DCA showed that the model improved patient outcomes by helping to assess the risk of PEECS in patients compared to an all-or-no treatment strategy. In addition, the clinical impact curve of the model also indicates that the nomogram has a high clinical net benefit. Conclusion: In conclusion, we have developed a predictive nomogram for PEECS after ESD for esophageal tumors with good predictive accuracy and discrimination. Coptis chinensis Franch (RC), has historically been used for the treatment of "Xiao Ke" and "Xia Li" symptoms in China. "Xia Li" is characterized by abdominal pain and diarrhea, which are similar to the clinical symptoms of ulcerative colitis (UC). For the first time, this study aims to compare the anti-colitis effects of berberine (BBR) and total RC alkaloids (TRCA) and investigate the underlying metabolites and gut microbiota biomarkers. Metabolomics results showed that several colitis-related biomarkers, including lysophosphatidyl ethanolamine, lysophosphatidylcholine, scopolamine-methyl-bromide, N1-methyl-2-pyridone-5-carboxamide, 4-hydroxyretinoic acid, and malic acid, were significantly improved in model mice after BBR and TRCA treatments. High-dose BBR and TRCA treatments reversed the mouse colon shortening caused by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS), alleviated bowel wall swelling, and reduced inflammatory cell infiltration. BBR and TRCA restored the damaged mucosa integrity in colitis mice by upregulating claudin 1 and occludin, preventing colon epithelium apoptosis by inhibiting the cleavage of caspase 3. Additionally, BBR and TRCA significantly decreased the richness of the pathogenic bacteria Bacteroides acidifaciens but increased the abundance of the probiotic Lactobacillus spp. Notably, TRCA exhibited superior anti-colitis effects to those of BBR. Aim: The aims of the present study are to describe the status of selfmanagement behaviors and illness perception, and explore the relationship between illness perception and self-management behaviors among Chinese diabetic foot patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the endocrinology department of a comprehensive tertiary hospital in Guangzhou, China. Data were collected on illness perception, self-management behaviors, and demographic and clinical characteristics over 9 months among 156 subjects. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis, univariate analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. Results: Only 3.2% of participants maintained excellent self-management behaviors. Additionally, the participants perceived diabetic foot as chronic and could be well controlled through treatment. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that illness perception was associated with self-management behaviors. Conclusions: Patient illness perception is an important factor influencing self-management behaviors. It may be helpful to improve self-management behaviors by tailoring the content of the intervention to fit the patients' illness perceptions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Hearing assistive technology (HAT) has been shown to be a viable solution to the speech-in-noise perception (SPIN) issue in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, little is known about its efficacy in tonal language speakers. This study compared sentence-level SPIN performance between Chinese children with ASD and neurotypical (NT) children and evaluated HAT use in improving SPIN performance and easing SPIN difficulty. Method: Children with ASD (n = 26) and NT children (n = 19) aged 6–12 years performed two adaptive tests in steady-state noise and three fixed-level tests in quiet and steady-state noise with and without using HAT. Speech recognition thresholds (SRTs) and accuracy rates were assessed using adaptive and fixed-level tests, respectively. Parents or teachers of the ASD group completed a questionnaire regarding children's listening difficulty under six circumstances before and after a 10-day trial period of HAT use. Results: Although the two groups of children had comparable SRTs, the ASD group showed a significantly lower SPIN accuracy rate than the NT group. Also, a significant impact of noise was found in the ASD group's accuracy rate but not in that of the NT group. There was a general improvement in the ASD group's SPIN performance with HAT and a decrease in their listening difficulty ratings across all conditions after the device trial. Conclusions: The findings indicated inadequate SPIN in the ASD group using a relatively sensitive measure to gauge SPIN performance among children. The markedly increased accuracy rate in noise during HAT-on sessions for the ASD group confirmed the feasibility of HAT for improving SPIN performance in controlled laboratory settings, and the reduced post-use ratings of listening difficulty further confirmed the benefits of HAT use in daily scenarios. Aims and objectives: To determine the prevalence and the associated factors of self‐perceived medical errors among Chinese emergency department nurses. Background: The emergency department is a place with a high incidence of medical errors. Studies about the occurrence and related influencing factors of medical errors among emergency nurses in China are very insufficient. Design: A nationwide cross‐sectional study. Methods: A nationwide cross‐sectional study was conducted from July 2018–August 2018. A total of 17,582 emergency department nurses from 31 provinces across China were eventually included in the analysis. Logistic regression is applied to examine the association of the independent variables with the perceived medical errors. The reporting of this study was compliant with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist for cross‐sectional studies. Results: Of 17,582 participating nurses, 4445 (25.28%) reported self‐perceived medical errors in the past 3 months. Nurses who were serving as nurses‐in‐charge; who reported fair or bad physical health; who reported staff shortage; who were exposed to more verbal abuse at work; who experienced effort–reward imbalance; who reported more over‐commitment; or who had depressive symptoms were more likely to report medical errors. Older age and female gender were protective factors. Conclusions: In this study, a quarter of the emergency nurses reported that they had made medical errors in the past 3 months. Self‐perceived medical errors are associated with multiple domains of work‐related factors and personal distress. Feasible measures should be taken to reduce nurses' workload, improve their working environment, monitor and minimise the occurrence of medical errors among emergency department nurses. Relevance to clinical practice: Emergency nurses, who are the most frequently in contact with patients, play an important role in identifying risk factors and preventing medical errors. Identifying risk factors that may lead to medical errors in the medical environment from both internal and external aspects will help nursing practitioners, hospital administrators and policy makers to take timely preventive measures to reduce the occurrence of medical errors and reduce harm to patients. Aims: To investigate the relationships between transformational leadership, psychological empowerment and innovative behaviour among nurses in China. Background: The innovative behaviour of nurses is important to adapt to the changing medical environment. However, there is currently a limited understanding of the relationship between nurses' innovative behaviour and transformational leadership and psychological empowerment during the pandemic. Methods: Convenience sampling was used to conduct an investigation involving 1317 nurses from 10 hospitals in China from January 2022 to April 2022. Data analysis was performed using correlation analysis, univariate analysis and multiple regression analysis. The STROBE checklist was followed when writing this manuscript. Results: High transformational leadership and high psychological empowerment were associated with high innovative behaviour. The results of the multiple linear regression analysis showed that physical condition, whether or not you have attended academic conferences or whether or not you have participated in fund research projects, transformational leadership and psychological empowerment were the main factors on nurses' innovative behaviour, together explaining 64.5% of the total variance. Conclusion: Promotion of transformational leadership and psychological empowerment is vital for nurses to promote innovation, thereby meeting the urgent demand for innovative nurses and the rapid development of nursing disciplines. Implications for Nursing Management: This study highlights the importance of transformational leadership in developing nurses' innovative behaviours. Aims: To describe adult intensive care nurses' experiences and attitudes towards intrahospital transport (IHT) of critically ill patients and to assess the relationship between nurses' characteristics, attitudes and experiences. Design Cross‐sectional survey. Methods: Factor analysis identified factors within the attitudinal and experience domains. Univariate analysis was performed to demonstrate the relationship between attitudinal and experience factors and demographic and professional characteristics of the participants. Multiple regression equations were applied to determine associations between nurses' experiences and attitudes. The study took place from July to August 2019. Results: A total of 480 nurses from 12 adult intensive care units in China participated, with a response rate of 65%. Most respondents had a baccalaureate nursing degree (75%). The majority (80%) had participated in IHT of critically ill more than five times in the previous 12 months and 90% agreed that checklists led to an improvement in patient safety during transport. However, 75% of respondents expressed that transport increased the workload of the nurses who accompany patients off unit and those who remained in the intensive care unit (66%). Variables that were associated with a favourable perception of transport competency and checklists/tool use were nurses' prior transport experiences and knowledge/training. Conclusion: Nurses perceived IHT was a sourse of stress and increased workload. Checklists and training were beneficial for patient safety during IHT. Impact The findings point out a clear need for ICU nurse training, standardised policy/procedure and customisation of existing intrahospital transfer checklists according to hospital procedures and local circumstances. The study aimed to explore the potential effect of short-term visual perceptual training based on virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) platforms in postoperative strabismic patients. We enrolled 236 postoperative strabismic patients, among whom 111 patients received VR-based training, and 125 patients received AR-based training. The stereoacuity of 1.5 m and dynamic stereopsis were improved by VR training; meanwhile, AR training exhibited more improvement in stereoacuity of 0.8 and 1.5 m, dynamic and coarse stereopsis. It was suggested that the visual perceptual training based on VR and AR technology can be potentially applied in postoperative strabismus treatment to promote the recovery of binocular vision. Aim: To analyse junior nurses' transition shock status and its associated factors. Background: When nurses experience transition shock, turnover intentions followed by turnover behaviour are likely, which is unfavourable for the stable development of nursing teams. Methods: Using convenience sampling, 1,148 Chinese junior nurses were recruited. Those recruited completed a demographic questionnaire and the head nurses' humanistic care behaviour for nurses, feedback‐seeking behaviour and transition shock of nurses scales. Data and associated factors of transition shock were analysed using SPSS and univariate and multivariate analyses, respectively. Results: Head nurses' humanistic care behaviour and nurses' feedback‐seeking behaviour were significantly and negatively correlated with junior nurses' transition shock (mean score: 2.87 ± 0.85). Income satisfaction, head nurses' humanistic care behaviour, night shift frequency and educational background entered the regression equation. Conclusions: Transition shock exists not only in new nurses but also in junior nurses with ≤5‐year service. Those dissatisfied with their income have frequent night shifts, and higher education backgrounds have higher levels of transition shock. Implications for Nursing Management: Head nurses need to reduce transition shock of nurses with ≤5‐year service by integrating humanistic care into nursing management and creating a friendly environment to stimulate feedback‐seeking behaviour. Aim: Nurses are considered a major source of professional support for patients. However, little is known about what cancer patients need from nurses regarding professional support and the provision of services in China. The purpose of this study is to investigate professional nursing supportive care needs, perceived supply, and the possible gaps between the two for patients with cancer in mainland China. Methods: A total of 390 inpatients with different types of cancer were recruited. The professional nursing supportive care scale was used to assess the needs for and perceived supply of various types of support. Results: The information aspect was one of the most critical needs for supportive care, and the technical aspect was the one with the highest perceived level of supply. Significant mismatches between actual needs and perceived supply were identified. Conclusions: Significant gaps existed between actual needs and perceived supply. Nurses should pay more attention to the higher actual needs and lower perceived levels of supply regarding supportive care for cancer patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To assess the vitamin D status in healthy 6‐month‐old infants, as well as vitamin D supplementation and feeding patterns in Guangzhou, China, serum 25‐hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) concentrations of 202 infants were measured at birth (cord blood) and at 6 months of age in Guangzhou, China. Questionnaires acquiring demographic characteristics, maternal and infantile vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy and first 6 months after birth, and feeding patterns during the first 6 months were completed by participating mothers. Physical examinations and blood sampling were carried out among infants at 6 months of age. The majority of infants (93.6%) were supplemented with vitamin D during the first 6 months of life on a voluntary basis. The M ± SD of cord serum 25OHD concentration was 46.2 ± 16.4 nmol/L, whereas the M ± SD of 25OHD concentration at 6 months was 82.9 ± 24.9 nmol/L. Serum 25OHD concentrations <30 nmol/L were seen in 34 (16.8%) infants at birth but only one (0.5%) at 6 months. Only 11 (5.4%) infants had concentrations >75 nmol/L at birth, whereas the majority of infants (n = 131, 64.9%) had concentrations >75 nmol/L at 6 months. The main predictors of 25OHD levels at 6 months included season, vitamin D supplementation, parental education level, and feeding patterns. To conclude, serum 25OHD concentrations were low at birth in a southern Chinese population, and infantile supplementation is an effective way to improve 25OHD status. Aim: To describe the levels of work engagement, and to analyse the reciprocal relationships between social support, empathy, resilience and work engagement among haemodialysis nurses in China. Background: Work engagement is a critical workplace health indicator. Previous studies have examined work engagement perceived by nurses working in diverse hospital wards, or a specialty area (emergency care or intensive care), no previous studies have highlighted work engagement and its affecting factors among haemodialysis nurses. Methods: Participants in the cross‐sectional study were 345 haemodialysis nurses employed in 17 hospitals in Chengdu, China. Hierarchical regression analyses were carried out to analyse the relationships between social support, empathy, resilience and work engagement in haemodialysis nurses. Results: Resilience was the strongest positive significant contributor to work engagement, followed by other support and perspective taking (cognitive empathy). Nurses with longer occupational tenure reported higher levels of work engagement. Male nurses also reported greater work engagement than female nurses. Discussion: Influence of work engagement was explored by social support, empathy and resilience, reflecting the need of haemodialysis nurses to understand the significance of focusing on their personal and environmental factors. Conclusions: Positive resilience, other support and cognitive empathy can result in increased work engagement. Implications for nursing: Training programs, such as mindfulness meditation training and empathy skills training, are recommended for nursing managers to enhance resilience and empathic capacity in nurses. Implications for nursing policy: Nursing policies should be developed to establish supportive work environments in clinical practice settings and to support the education and training of psychological resilience and empathic capacity in order to foster work engagement. Objective: This study examines the impact of the PC 3-sessions Training Project (PC-project), designed to improve professional competency among social workers in China. Methods: Using a quasi-experimental approach, 170 social workers from social work organizations (SWOs) or community organizations (COs) participated. The experimental group (Group 1), with 127 members, participated in all three sessions; comparison Group 2, with 22 participants, attended the last two sessions; and comparison Group 3, with 21 individuals, participated in the third session. Results: Those who participated in all three sessions improved in four dimensions of professional competency: teamwork skills, community work skills, case management skills, and supportive skills, while the comparison groups showed no significant improvement. In addition, social workers in COs developed their professional competency in more dimensions than those in SWOs. Conclusions: The PC-project is effective in improving social workers' professional competencies; hence, this program should be used in China for training and continuous development. Purpose: To compare mobile phone addiction (MPA) patterns between Tibetan and Han adolescents in China. Design and Methods: The study was carried out in two provinces of China. The Mobile Phone Addiction Scale (MPAS) was used to assess MPA. Findings: Seven hundred and five Tibetan and 606 Han students participated in the study. The MPAS total score was 24.4 ± 11.4 in the whole sample; 27.3 ± 10.8 and 20.9 ± 11.2 in Tibetan and Han students, respectively. Quality of life (QOL) in the physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains was negatively associated with MPA. Practice Implications: Compared with Han students, Tibetan students were found to have more severe MPA. Given its negative impact on QOL, appropriate measures for the prevention of MPA should be developed, particularly for Tibetan middle school students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on perceptions and attitudes regarding intimate partner violence (IPV), a prominent predictor of IPV, is limited, and surveys on the relationships of the influencing factors are even rarer. Using a convenience sample of 2,057 students and assessed by the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale, this study explored Chinese university students' perceptions and attitudes concerning IPV to improve IPV prevention programs. It focused on the existences of the different perceptions and attitudes regarding gender, residence, major, and age under the same condition of educational attainment. Significant gender differences were found, with female students possessing better perceptions, which indicated that with the same education levels, the perceptions of females were better than those of males. Significant differences were also found for the first time in the literature between science students and arts students, with the latter holding better attitudes. No significant differences were seen between students from rural areas and students from urban areas, suggesting that with the same educational attainment, there were no perception differences between rural and urban residents. No significant perception differences were found among freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, which revealed that neither university education nor urban life had a significant effect on perceptions and attitudes concerning IPV for students who had finished high school education. In conclusion, the results of the current study indicated that among the other factors such as gender, residence, and age, education was the most powerful factor influencing perceptions and attitudes concerning IPV. The purpose of this study was to analyse the association between social determinants and the presence of essential hypertension in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in one rural county (Jintan) of China. A health survey of Jintan residents was conducted in 2013, applying a cluster sampling method. Three hundred and fifty-seven type 2 diabetes mellitus patients were selected as research subjects. Among the patients selected, essential hypertension prevalence was 45.4% (n = 162). After univariate analyses and logistic regression analyses, an association was observed between the presence of essential hypertension in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and marital status, described as 'others (unmarried, divorce, widower, etc.)', and participating in active physical activity. Both of these two significant variables were positively associated with the higher prevalence of essential hypertension in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. In conclusion, the patients suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus combined with essential hypertension often reported an association with more negative social determinants (with the exception of participation in physical activity). Further strengthening the comprehensive multi-disease management to control and reduce the prevalence of essential hypertension in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients is required. Nursing students' beliefs about etiology and manifestation of mental illness will impact on their professional attitudes in future clinical practice. The aims of the present study were to examine and compare US and Chinese undergraduate nursing students' recognition of, and beliefs about, causes of depression and schizophrenia. A total of 310 US (n = 152) and Chinese (n = 158) nursing students completed the Australian National Mental Health Literacy Survey questionnaire between April 2016 and April 2017. Although nursing students in the USA and China were highly accurate in recognizing depression and schizophrenia, the US students were more likely to nominate multiple items alongside the correct diagnosis than the Chinese students. The Chinese students were more likely to view depression and schizophrenia as multi‐causally‐determined mental disorders than the US students. The findings highlight the need for the incorporation of mental health issues, including symptomatology of different mental disorders and their application to patient care, into various aspects of the US nursing curriculum. Background: The critical shoulder angle (CSA) is the angle created between the superior and inferior bone margins of the glenoid and the most lateral border of the acromion. A few studies recently investigated the relation between CSA and functional outcomes after rotator cuff repair. However, there is a lack of research investigating the effect of CSA on postoperative tendon integrity after rotator cuff repair. Purpose: To assess the effects of the CSA on postoperative tendon integrity after rotator cuff repair. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: All patients who underwent rotator cuff repair for full-thickness supraspinatus tears by 1 senior surgeon between January 2010 and January 2014 were included in this study. All patients had standardized anteroposterior shoulder radiographs the day before surgery. CSA and acromial index (AI) were measured. AI was derived by measuring the distance from the glenoid plane to the lateral border of the acromion and dividing it by the distance from the glenoid plane to the lateral aspect of the humeral head. Functional scores—including American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons shoulder evaluation form, modified University of California at Los Angeles score, Constant-Murley score, and visual analog scale for pain—were used to evaluate shoulder function at a minimum follow-up of 2 years. Meanwhile, magnetic resonance imaging examinations were performed to evaluate rotator cuff integrity according to the Sugaya method and the signal/noise quotient (SNQ) of the rotator cuff tendon. Results: A total of 90 patients were included in this study: 42 patients with a single-row repair and 48 with a double-row repair. There was a significant positive correlation between CSA or AI and tendon SNQ. On the basis of CSA, the patients were divided into 2 groups: large CSA (>38°) and control (CSA ≤38°). At final follow-up, the large CSA group and the control CSA group demonstrated no significant differences in American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, University of California at Los Angeles, Constant, and visual analog scale scores. Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging revealed that the large CSA group had 9 cases of retear, with a significantly higher retear rate than the control group (15% vs 0%, P = .03). Furthermore, the tendon SNQ of the large CSA group was significantly greater than that of the control group. Conclusion: CSA did not appear to influence postoperative functional outcomes, while those in the large CSA group had poor tendon integrity after rotator cuff repair. This is a single centre study in mainland China aiming to evaluate the reliability, validity and responsiveness of the Chinese version of EORTC QLQ‐BN20, designed by The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Group to evaluate the life quality of patients with brain tumour, cancer or metastases. One hundred and eighty‐eight patients with primary or secondary brain cancer from Hunan Provincial Tumor Hospital during September 2013 to June 2014 completed the Chinese EORTC QLQ‐C30/BN20 questionnaires developed by translation, back translation and cultural adaptation. Results were statistically analysed using SPSS17.0. The internal consistency (Cronbach's α coefficient) was between .753 and .869, the correlation coefficients among items and its own dimension were bigger than .4, and all items had a better correlation with its own dimension. The Spearman was used to analyse the correlation of each dimension between EORTC QLQ‐BN20 and EORTC QLQ‐C30, and the result showed that individual dimensions were moderately correlated, other dimensions were weakly correlated. In conclusion, the Chinese version of EORTC QLQ BN20 questionnaire had great relevance, reliability, convergent validity and discriminant validity. Increasing evidence indicates unmet supportive need as a detrimental effect on patients’ well‐being. However, the unmet needs and correlations with quality of life (QOL) in mainland Chinese cancer patients remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the unmet needs and QOL in Chinese cancer patients, and further explore the influencing factors. A cross‐sectional descriptive study design was applied. Using a convenience sampling method, 300 cancer patients, including 176 females and 124 males were recruited from five tertiary hospitals in Xi'an city during April to July 2015. Self‐administered questionnaires including general information, Comprehensive Needs Assessment Tool (CNAT) and the 36‐item Short‐Form Health Survey (SF‐36) were used for data collection. The mean age of the participants was 52.96 ± 13.45 years. The total score of CNAT was 46.37 ± 21.87, and the most unmet comprehensive needs were healthcare staff, information and health facilities and services domain. The total score of QOL was 48.95 ± 18.80 and 50.35 ± 19.77 for physical and mental QOL respectively. Multiple regression analysis revealed that age, employment status (employed), marital status (unmarried/divorced/widowed) and high needs in physical symptoms were associated with physical QOL. In addition, gender (female), marital status (unmarried/divorced/widowed), and needs in health and psychological problem and physical symptoms domains are significant factors to the mental QOL. Aim To determine the relative validity of a 2-day 24-hour dietary recall ( HR) designed to assess energy and nutrient intake among Chinese adults compared with a 2-day weighed dietary record ( WD). Methods Data were obtained from an ongoing population-based, prospective cohort study of adults aged 18-65 years in South China. A total of 41 adults completing a HR and a WD within 14 days were included in the present analysis. Estimations of individual mean differences, Spearman's correlation coefficients, cross-classifications and Bland-Altman plots were used to assess the agreement between the intakes of energy and 18 nutrients obtained from the HR and the WD. Results With the exception of total fat, saturated fatty acids, thiamine, potassium and magnesium, the energy and nutrient intakes between the HR and WD showed no significant differences. All dietary intakes that were evaluated by the HR were correlated significantly with the dietary intake from the WD (de-attenuated correlation coefficients ranged from 0.10 to 0.87). The proportion of participants classified into quartiles correctly ranged from 61% for tocopherol intake to 90% for energy intake. The weighted k values ranking the participants ranged from 0.11 for tocopherol intake to 0.41 for the intakes of energy and calcium. The Bland-Altman plots showed moderate/good agreement among all the dietary intakes that were estimated from the HR and WD, except for total fat. Background: Xerostomia is one of the most common complaints in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. This problem contributes to excess fluid intake and results in poor survival outcome. Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory and literature studies, the authors have been practicing auricular acupressure therapy (AAT) to help patients with xerostomia. This pilot study was conducted to demonstrate the potential of AAT for xerostomia in MHD patients. Methods: Eligible subjects who agreed to participate in this study were recruited and provided with AAT for 4 weeks. The Summated Xerostomia Inventory (SXI), as well as measurement of inter-dialytic weight gain (IDWG), daily inter-dialytic weight gain (daily IDWG), percentage of inter-dialytic weight gain (IDWG%), blood pressure, and biochemical parameters, were completed at baseline and after a 4-week intervention. Results: A total of 26 eligible participants were recruited. Of them, 10 men and 16 women ( Mage = 52.92 ± 11.80 years; dialysis vintage 81.86 ± 46.05 months) completed the study. After the 4-week AAT intervention, the SXI scores were significantly decreased compared with baseline (from 10.08 ± 2.26 to 9.04 ± 2.14; p < 0.05). However, the IDWG, daily IDWG, IDWG%, blood pressure, and biochemical parameters did not change significantly after the intervention. Background: Recent studies have proved metabolic syndrome (MetS) was linked to cancer risks. However, few data has examined the relationship between MetS and epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Methods: We conducted a population-based case-control study in Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital, China (2010-2015) that enrolled 573 EOC patients and 1146 matched controls. Data were collected through in-person interviews, anthropometric measurement, and 8-h fasting bloods drawn. MetS was estimated by Chinese Diabetes Society (CDS) definition requiring presence of ≥3 of the following risk factors: 1) body mass index (BMI) ≥25. 0kg/m²,2) fasting plasma glucose ≥6.1 mmol/L or 2-h plasma glucose ≥ 7.8 mmol/L, 3) systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg, 4) triglyceride (TG) ≥1.70 mmol/L or high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) < 1.0 mmol/L. Statistics were completed using chi-square tests and logistic regression analysis. The survival analysis was conducted by the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazard regression models. Results: MetS was significantly more prevalent among EOC (25.13%) than controls (6.89%). A statistically significant increase risk for EOC was observed for MetS (multivariable-adjusted OR = 3.187; 95% CI: 2.135-4.756). MetS was significantly associated with histological grade (P < 0.001), FIGO stage (P = 0.003), and lymph node (LN) status (P = 0.002) of EOC. In binary logistic regression analysis, the presence of MetS predicts the risk of advanced FIGO stage (OR = 2.155, 95% CI: 1.327-3.498, P = 0.002), lower differentiation (OR = 2.472, 95% CI: 1.164-5.250, P = 0.019), and LN metastasis (OR = 2.590, 95% CI: 1.089-6.160, P = 0.031) of EOC. Moreover, MetS is the independent factor for the evaluation of PFS and OS of EOC patients (both of them P < 0.001) in Cox proportional hazard model. Conclusion: MetS is obviously related to increased EOC risk. Background: Fasting is the most widely prescribed and self-imposed strategy for treating excessive weight gain and obesity, and has been shown to exert a number of beneficial effects. The aim of the present study was to determine the exact role of fasting and subsequent refeeding on fat distribution in mice. Methods: C57/BL6 mice fasted for 24 to 72 h and were then subjected to refeeding for 72 h. At 24, 48 and 72 h of fasting, and 12, 24, 48 and 72 h of refeeding, the mice were sacrificed, and serum and various adipose tissues were collected. Serum biochemical parameters, adipose tissue masses and histomorphological analysis of different depots were detected. MRNA was isolated from various adipose tissues, and the expressions of thermogenesis, visceral signature and lipid metabolism-related genes were examined. The phenotypes of adipose tissues between juvenile and adult mice subjected to fasting and refeeding were also compared. Results: Fasting preferentially consumed mesenteric fat mass and decreased the cell size of mesenteric depots; however, refeeding recovered the mass and morphology of inguinal adipose tissues preferentially compared with visceral depots. Thermogenesis-related gene expression in the inguinal WAT and interscapular BAT were suppressed. Mitochondrial biogenesis was affected by fasting in a depot-specific manner. Furthermore, a short period of fasting led to an increase in visceral signature genes (Wt1, Tcf21) in subcutaneous adipose tissue, while the expression of these genes decreased sharply as the fasting time increased. Additionally, lipogenesis-related markers were enhanced to a greater extent greater in subcutaneous depots compared with those in visceral adipose tissues by refeeding. Although similar phenotypic changes in adipose tissue were observed between juvenile mice and adult mice subjected to fasting and refeeding, the alterations appeared earlier and more sensitively in juvenile mice. Conclusions: Fasting preferentially consumes lipids in visceral adipose tissues, whereas refeeding recovers lipids predominantly in subcutaneous adipose tissues, which indicated the significance of plasticity of adipose organs for fat distribution when subject to food deprivation or refeeding. Objective: To determine the appropriate treatments for post-ischaemic stroke depression at different times after stroke. Design: A single-blind, randomized, controlled trial that compared three intervention groups, with subgroups stratified by time after stroke. Setting: Outpatient clinic. Subjects: Eligible patients were recruited at discharge (n = 73) and three (n = 67), six (n = 65), and nine months (n = 69) after discharge, and patients completed mood questionnaires. Interventions: Patients were randomly distributed into three groups: Group A received placebos and participated in general discussions; Group B, received citalopram and participated in general discussions; and Group C, received placebos and underwent cognitive behavioural therapy. All three groups participated in rehabilitation during three months of follow-up. Main measures: Outcome was assessed three months after baseline using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD17) and the Bech–Rafaelsen Melancholia Scale (MES). During treatment, the Udvalg for Kliniske Undersogelser side-effect scale was also administered. Results: When stratification was not considered, the scores of Group B on the Melancholia Scale were lower than those of Group A (P = 0.02); when the four time-based subgroups were analysed, significant differences were observed between Groups A and B (PMES = 0.02, PHAMD17 = 0.02) in the group recruited six months after discharge and between Groups A and C (PMES = 0.01) in the last time period nine months after discharge. Conclusions: The effects of citalopram or cognitive behavioural therapy is similar to the effect of rehabilitation alone for early-onset post-ischaemic depression; rehabilitation and citalopram for delayed-onset post-ischaemic depression; and rehabilitation and cognitive behavioural therapy for late-onset post-ischaemic depression are more effective than rehabilitation alone. Objectives: China's economic reforms have led to millions of citizens being relocated to support infrastructure development, reduce poverty, and address ecological, disaster-related and other concerns. This study expands on previous research on the implications of relocation in China by examining the impact of rural elders' relocation on the perceived availability of emotional, instrumental, and financial support. Methods: Data were drawn from the Ankang Study of Aging and Health conducted with a representative sample of 1,062 rural residents aged 60 and over living in Ankang, China. Two-stage probit and least squares regression models assessed the impact of relocation on familial and nonfamilial emotional, instrumental, and financial support. Results: Relocation was negatively associated with the number of social support resources that older adults perceived as being available. Although this was the case with regard to both familial and nonfamilial support, it was particularly evident with regard to family support and, within families, with regard to instrumental rather than financial or emotional support. Discussion: Relocation has negative implications for the number of social support resources perceived to be available by older adults in rural China. The aim of this study is to examine the burden of family caregivers of patients with retinoblastoma in China and the relationships between depression, caregiver burden and social support. A descriptive and correlational survey was conducted with 117 Chinese family caregivers of outpatient patients with retinoblastoma from the Department of Ophthalmology of a tertiary hospital in Shanghai, China. Family caregivers of outpatient patients with retinoblastoma were asked to respond to four questionnaires including sociodemographic questionnaire, Becker Depression Inventory, Caregiver Burden Inventory and Social Support Rating Scale. The incidence of depression in this study was 51.3%; the average score for social support indicated moderate social support available to the caregivers, although their level of caregiver burden was heavy. Depression scores were significantly positively correlated with caregiver burden scores and significantly negatively correlated with the social support scores. Youth aggression is a serious global issue, but research identifying personality traits associated with aggression has focused on adults. Little is known about whether similar associations exist during adolescence; even less is known about these associations across cultures. This study examined links between personality and physical aggression in U.S. and Chinese adolescents, and tested whether temper mediates these associations. U.S. (N = 250) and Chinese (N = 199) young adolescents ( X ¯ age = 13.43 years) completed self-reports describing personality, temper, and aggression. Path analyses demonstrated that temper significantly mediated associations from agreeableness and neuroticism to aggression in both samples. The mediating effect of temper was marginally stronger in the Chinese sample than in the U.S. sample, suggesting temper plays a more important role in youth aggression in China than in the United States. Findings highlight the universal role of affect in aggression and demonstrate the importance of cultural context in understanding links between personality and youth aggression. High-risk sexual behaviours (HRSBs), such as having male casual sexual partners (MCSPs) and unprotected anal intercourse (UAI), are combined with a high prevalence of HIV infection among gay/bisexual men. Sexual sensation seeking (SSS) and sexual compulsivity (SC), which are intrapersonal factors, were observed to have associations with HRSB among gay/bisexual men in Western nations. The aim of the study was to examine the relationships between SSS, SC, sociodemographic factors, and HRSB (defined as having MCSP and UAI with MCSP) among selfidentified gay and bisexual men in Southwest China. The study was cross-sectional, with a sample of 436 respondents. And their mean age was 24.5 years. The results confirmed that SSS, SC, and sexual attitude are associated with both having MCSP and UAI with MCSP in the Chinese cultural context, among the subgroup of men who have sex with men. Being older, not a student, and having transactional sex in the last 6 months were independently associated with having MCSP. Lower educational level, unemployed, having a relationship with a man, and an unsure HIV status were independently associated with UAI with MCSP. This study indicates that SSS and SC are cross-cultural personality traits related to HRSB. The results of this study may shed light on HIV prevention among gay/bisexual men in China. Background:Controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) is a non-invasive method for diagnosing liver steatosis based on vibration-controlled transient elastography. The primary objective of this study was to assess CAP performance and determine the cut-off values for the diagnosis of hepatic steatosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) using liver biopsy as a gold standard. The second objective was to apply the cut-off values found in the first cohort to a larger cohort to compare the performance of CAP and ultrasonography. Methods:Overall, 189 patients with CHB who underwent liver biopsy and CAP detection and 1707 patients with CHB and CAP who underwent abdominal ultrasonography were prospectively enrolled. The performance of CAP for evaluating hepatic steatosis compared with liver biopsy was calculated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). Results:In the 189 patients who underwent liver biopsy, the cut-offs for the CAP with steatosis S ≥ 1, S ≥ 2 and S ≥ 3 were 222 dB/m, 247 dB/m and 274 dB/m, respectively, and the AUROC were 0.88 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.82–0.95), 0.92 (95% CI = 0.87–0.97) and 0.94 (95% CI = 0.90–0.99), respectively. After applying the cut-offs above to the 1707 patients, it was found that CAP had a good concordance with abdominal ultrasonography with steatosis grade > S2. On multivariate analysis, body mass index (p < 0.001), triglyceride level (p < 0.001) and fasting glucose level (p = 0.001) were independent risk factors of CAP. Background The present study evaluated the relationship between dietary fatty acid ( FA) intakes and human milk FA levels. Methods Healthy lactating women ( n = 514) from Northern China participated in the study. Dietary intake was assessed with a 24-h dietary recall questionnaire and evaluated using golden key maternal nutrition software (Wincome, Shanghai, China) and China Food Composition 2009. Human milk FA composition was determined by gas chromatography. Results The maternal daily median intakes of linoleic acid ( LA), α-linolenic acid ( ALA) and arachidonic acid ( AA) were 19.93 g, 3.08 g and 16.33 mg, respectively. Eicosapentaenoic acid ( EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid ( DHA) intakes were below the recommended levels. FA levels in 100 g of human milk were 0.363 g LA, 0.038 g γ-linolenic acid ( GLA), 0.052 g dihomo γ-linolenic acid ( DGLA), 0.144 g ALA, 0.079 g AA, 0.007 g EPA, 0.018 g docosatetraenoic acid ( DTA) and 0.048 g DHA. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that human milk DGLA levels were negatively correlated with dietary LA intake (β = −0.223, P = 0.030), and human milk GLA and DTA levels were negatively correlated with dietary ALA intake (β = −2.189, P = 0.031; β = −2.252, P = 0.027) after adjusting for possible confounding factors. Crocin, the main effective component of saffron, exerts protective effects against ischemia/reperfusion injury during strokes. However, the effects of crocin in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury, and the mechanisms involved, remain unknown. Pretreated with crocin for 7 days, C57BL/6N mice were subjected to 30 min of myocardial ischemia followed by 12h of reperfusion (for cardiac function and infarct size, cell apoptosis and necrosis). Neonatal mouse cardiomyocytes were subjected to 2 h of hypoxia followed by 4 h of reoxygenation. NMCM's survival was assessed during hypoxia and reoxygenation in the presence or absence of the autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine or the inducer rapamycin. Western blotting was used to evaluate AMPK, Akt, and autophagy-related proteins. Autophagosome was observed using electron microscopy. In the in vivo experiment, crocin pretreatment significantly attenuated infarct size, myocardial apoptosis and necrosis, and improved left ventricular function following ischemia/reperfusion. In vitro data revealed that autophagy was induced during hypoxia, the levels of which were intensely elevated during reoxygenation. Crocin significantly promoted autophagy during ischemia, accompanied with the activation of AMPK. In contrast, crocin overtly inhibited autophagy during reperfusion, accompanied with Akt activation. Induction and inhibition of autophagy mitigated crocin induced protection against NMCMs injury during hypoxia and reoxygenation, respectively. Our data suggest that crocin demonstrated a myocardial protective effect via AMPK/mTOR and Akt/mTOR regulated autophagy against ischemia and reperfusion injury, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The relationship between alterations in thyroid function and cognitive deficits has been investigated in several previous studies. Hypo-or hyperthyroidism and, to a lesser extent, subclinical thyroid dysfunction can negatively affect cognitive performance. However, limited data are available on the potential association of thyroid function with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the elderly Chinese population. Methods: In the present study focusing on a population of elderly Chinese individuals ≥ 50 years of age, 77 cognitively normal controls, 64 patients with MCI, and 154 patients diagnosed with AD underwent assessment of thyroid status using thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (fT3) and free thyroxine (fT4) levels as variables. Cognitive function was evaluated with the aid of comprehensive neuropsychological tests, such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Memory and Executive Screening (MES). Results: Overall, 88.1 % of the subjects displayed normal thyroid function, 4.7 % were diagnosed with clinical hypothyroidism, 3.1 % with subclinical hypothyroidism, and 4.1 % with subclinical hyperthyroidism. After adjusting for covariates (age, sex, education years and body mass index), no association was evident between mild cognitive impairment or AD and thyroid dysfunction. However, lower serum TSH was correlated with risk of AD (odds ratio [OR]: 2.78, 95 % confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.11-6.99). Conclusion: Neither hypothyroidism nor subclinical hyperthyroidism was associated with AD and MCI in this population-based elderly Chinese cohort. Purpose: To determine the dose-response of vitamin D3 supplementation on serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] among Chinese adults. Methods: In this 5-arm, randomized, double-blinded controlled trial, 76 healthy participants were assigned to orally administrate 0, 400, 800, 1200 or 2000 IU/d of vitamin D3 for 16 weeks. Serum 25(OH)D, parathyroid hormone, calcium, biomarkers of liver and renal function were measured at multiple time points. Results: The mean (SD) serum 25(OH)D at baseline was 31.6 (8.7) nmol/L, and the dose-response relationship was curvilinear with a plateau around 6 weeks for all doses. At week 16, 25(OH)D was increased by 6.0 (6.5), 21.7 (15.8), 26.3 (12.6), 32.0 (12.8) and 36.3 (26.0) nmol/L for 0, 400, 800, 1200 and 2000 IU/d (all P ≤ 0.002), corresponding to approximately 19, 53, 67, 77 and 80 % of reversion of vitamin D deficiency, respectively. Daily intake of 800 IU vitamin D3 reached a targeted 25(OH)D ≥ 30 nmol/L in at least 97.5 % of Chinese, but not a targeted 25(OH)D ≥ 50 nmol/L even with 2000 IU/d. Change of 25(OH)D was inversely associated with change of PTH concentration ( r = −0.39, P < 0.001) after controlling for age and sex. No between-group differences were observed in terms of the change in serum calcium, alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyltransferase and creatinine ( P ≥ 0.22). Conclusions: Supplementation with 400, 800, 1200 or 2000 IU/d vitamin D could improve the vitamin D deficiency with various degrees. Background: Cystatin C, a marker for early stage chronic kidney dysfunction, mediates the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. Objective: To investigate whether serum cystatin C is an independent predictor of coronary heart disease (CHD) for patients without chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included 525 patients with CHD and 142 apparently healthy control individuals and acquired their demographic characteristics, medical histories, and listings of the concurrent medications they were taking. All patients with CHD underwent coronary angiography and other routine laboratory examinations. We quantified serum concentrations of cystatin Cvia particle-enhanced immunonephelometric assay. Results: Compared with controls, the patients with CHD had higher serum cystatin C levels (median: 1.17mg/L, interquartile range [IQR]: 1.01 to 1.46 mg/L vs median: 0.98 mg/L, IQR: 0.80 to 1.06 mg/L, P 5.001), lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P5.001), higher levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P5.001), triglyceride (P5.001), total cholesterol (P= .007) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (P5.001). No differences occurred in serum concentrations of creatinine or estimated glomerular filtration rate between CHD patients and healthy controls. Multivariate logistic regression indicated that levels of cystatin C (OR, 1.648; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.454 to 1.868; P5.001) were most strongly correlated with CHD prevalence. Conclusions: Elevated serum cystatin C is a potential biochemical marker for the prediction of CHD, which suggests that mild preclinical renal dysfunction may be associated with the pathogenesis of CHD. Few studies in China have focused on advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease (AHD) and late entry to HIV care, which are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. A population-based retrospective study was conducted using 980 national HIV surveillance reports from 1994 to February 2012 in Wuhan, China. AHD was defined as presence of a first-reported CD4 count <200 cells/μL or an acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)-defining event within 1 month of HIV diagnosis. Late entry to HIV care was defined as patients with a first-reported CD4 cell count >6 months after diagnosis. Non-conditional logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with AHD, late entry to HIV care, and AIDS within 1 year of HIV diagnosis. The proportions of AHD, AIDS within 1 year of HIV diagnosis, and late entry to HIV care were 29.49%, 39.39%, and 20.84%, respectively. Most of the deaths (74.27%, 127/171) occurred within 1 year of diagnosis. Short-term mortality, proportion of AHD, and late entry to HIV care showed a similar downward trend from pre-2003 to 2011 ( p<0.001). Age, transmission category, sample source, and occupation were associated with AHD, late entry to HIV care, and AIDS within 1 year of HIV diagnosis in the multivariate logistic regression analysis. These findings indicate that AHD and late entry to HIV care were associated with an increased incidence of AIDS or death, particularly within 1 year of diagnosis. Aims and objectives The primary aim of this study was to examine the correlations between patient and caregiver characteristics with caregiver burden, anxiety and depression in Alzheimer's Disease. Secondary aim was to determine which behavioural and psychological symptoms had the greatest impact on caregiver burden, anxiety and depression in Alzheimer's Disease. Background Caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's Disease experience high levels of burden, both psychologically and physically. Previous studies have examined caregiver burden, anxiety and depression separately. However, no paper has examined these three psychological conditions simultaneously. Design A cross-sectional design. Methods A total of 310 patients with probable Alzheimer's Disease and their primary caregivers were assessed. Cognitive impairment and neuropsychiatric symptoms were assessed with the Mini Mental State Examination, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Clock Drawing Test and Neuropsychiatric Inventory, respectively. Caregiver burden, anxiety and depression were assessed with the ZBI, Generalised Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 and Patient Health Questionnaire-9, respectively. Results All 12 neuropsychiatric symptoms in the Neuropsychiatric Inventory were significantly correlated with caregiver burden, anxiety and depression, with the top three neuropsychiatric predictors being depression, apathy and anxiety. Furthermore, higher levels of caregiver anxiety were associated with a longer duration of being a caregiver. Within caregivers, higher levels of depression were independently associated with higher numbers of additional caregivers, lower educational background and being the spouse of the patient. Higher levels of burden were associated with a longer duration of being a caregiver and being the spouse of the patient. Caregiver burden, anxiety or depression were not significantly correlated with hours/day of caring for the patient. Conclusions Caregiver burden, anxiety and depression were significantly correlated with different neuropsychiatric symptoms in the Neuropsychiatric Inventory. Relevance to clinical practice Practitioners are able to identify caregivers at risk for burden, anxiety and depression. Understanding which Neuropsychiatric Inventory symptom is more closely associated with distress in caregivers will help practitioners to be more specific and effective in detecting caregiver distress. We assessed the association between 5 well-defined polymorphisms of the transforming growth factor-β1 (TGFB1) gene and coronary artery disease (CAD) among patients with hypertension from northeast China. All study participants were classified into patients with CAD (n = 679) and controls (n = 686) according to angiographic results. Genotyping was carried out with the ligase detection reaction method. In single-locus analysis, only genotypes of rs1800469 differed significantly between patients with CAD and controls (P = .001); patients carrying the mutant allele of rs1800469 exhibited a 73% increased risk of CAD (P < .001). Haplotype analysis indicated that haplotype A-T-T-C-C (alleles in the order of rs1800468, rs1800469, rs1800470, rs1800471, and rs1800472) was associated with a 1.49-fold increased risk (P = .003). Interaction analysis identified an overall best 3-locus model including rs1800469, rs1800468, and rs1800471 (P = .003). Objective: The study of soluble corin in the circulation before hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) has been limited. Here we aimed to study serum soluble corin in mid pregnancy in patients with HDP and their age- and gestational weeks-matched controls. Methods: Sixty-eight pairs of cases of HDP and controls were studied. Blood samples were obtained in mid pregnancy between 16 and 20 gestational weeks. Serum soluble corin was examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay methods. The relationship between serum soluble corin and HDP was examined using conditional logistic regression models. Results: Serum soluble corin in mid pregnancy was increased in cases with HDP compared with controls (median [interquartile range]: 1968 [1644-2332] pg/mL vs. 1700 [1446-2056] pg/mL, p=0.002). Participants were categorized into quartiles of serum soluble corin distributed in controls. Compared with the lowest quartile, participants in the highest quartile had a significantly increased risk for HDP (odds ratio [OR], 4.21; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.31-13.53) after multivariate adjustment. Nevertheless, we did not find a significantly increased risk for participants in the second (OR, 1.75; 95% CI, 0.44-7.02) and third (OR, 2.80; 95% CI, 0.70-11.18) quartiles. Then the first three quartiles were merged as a reference group to calculate the OR of HDP for participants in the highest quartile and we found a significantly increased risk for HDP in individuals in the highest quartile (OR, 2.28, 95% CI, 1.02-5.06). Conclusion: Increased serum soluble corin in mid pregnancy was associated with an increased risk for HDP. Background: Patients on maintenance hemodialysis suffer from diminished physical health. Directly supervised exercise programs have been shown to be effective at improving physical function and optimizing well-being. However, nurses seldom include an exercise intervention in the care plan for hemodialysis patients. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a 12-week nurse-led case management program on home exercise training for hemodialysis patients. Design: The study was a randomized, two-parallel group trial. Settings: Hemodialysis units in two tertiary hospitals in Nanjing, mainland China. Participants: One hundred and thirteen adult patients who have been in stable condition while on dialysis treatment for more than 3 months were recruited and randomly assigned to either the study group (n = 57) or the control group (n = 56). Methods: Both groups underwent a brief weekly in-center exercise training session before their dialysis sessions for the first 6 weeks. The study group received additional nurse case management weekly for the first 6 weeks and biweekly for the following 6 weeks. The intervention was to facilitate patients in performing regular exercise at home. Outcome measures, including gait speed, 10-repetition sit-to-stand performance, and quality of life were collected at baseline, and at 6 and 12 weeks into the program. Results: The results revealed that patients in the study group demonstrated greater increases in normal gait speed [F(1,111) = 4.42, p = 0.038] than the control group. For the study group, a mean increase of 12.02 (±3.03) centimeters/second from baseline to week 12 was found. With regard to the fast gait speed, there was a marginally significant between-group effect [F(1,111) = 3.93, p = 0.050]. The study group showed a mean improvement of 11.08 (±3.32) cm/s, from baseline to week 12. Patients from both groups showed improvements in their 10-repetition sit-to-stand performance. The between-group differences approached significance [F(1,111) = 3.92, p = 0.050], with the study group showed greater improvement than the control group. The time taken by the patients in the study group to complete the 10-STS test increased by 5.75 (±3.88) s from baseline to week 12. Significant improvements in quality of life across three time points were found only in the study group. Conclusions: Home exercise using a nurse-led case management approach is practical and effective in improving the physical function and self-perceived health of stable hemodialysis patients. Objectives The aim of the present study was to explore the magnetic resonance imaging correlates of the performance of instrumental activities of daily living ( IADL) in patients with Alzheimer's disease combined with cerebrovascular disease. Methods A total of 66 patients with Alzheimer's disease combined with cerebrovascular disease formed the study sample. Two regression models were constructed to find correlates of IADL. Model 1 only included clinical variables and model 2 included both clinical and magnetic resonance imaging variables. Results In model 1, with IADL as the dependent variable, the Mini-Mental State Examination ( MMSE) score, Physical Self- Maintenance Scale score at baseline and age were significant correlates accounting for 40.1% of the variance of IADL at baseline. MMSE score and age were also significant correlates of IADL at 6 months, accounting for 38.1% of the variance of it. In model 2, severity of white matter lesions, MMSE and Physical Self- Maintenance Scale scores at baseline significantly correlated with IADL at baseline, accounting for 52.1% of the variance of the dependent variables; severity of white matter lesions and MMSE significantly correlated with IADL at 6 months, accounting for 41.5% of the variance of the dependent variables. Conclusion In patients with Alzheimer's disease combined with cerebrovascular disease, subcortical ischemic lesions might be significant contributor to the functional status. Objective: The aim of this study was to test plasma insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) change in Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET), and assess the association of plasma IGF-1 level with motor and nonmotor symptoms in PD and ET. Methods: Plasma IGF-1 was measured in 100 PD patients, 40 ET patients, and 76 healthy controls. Motor and nonmotor symptoms were assessed by different scales. Spearman correlation test and linear logistic model were used to analyze the correlation of plasma IGF-1 with motor and nonmotor symptoms of PD and ET. Results: The plasma IGF-1 level was significantly increased in PD compared to healthy controls and ET patients. In addition, low plasma IGF-1 was correlated with low Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores in PD patients. However, no correlation was found between plasma IGF-1 and MMSE scores in ET patients. Conclusion: Plasma IGF-1 increased significantly in PD but remained unchanged in ET. With employee creativity becoming increasingly critical to the competitiveness of today's organisations, there is a need to better understand and refine the role that positive psychological constructs such as learning goal orientation ( LGO) and the now recognised psychological capital ( Psy Cap) may play in influencing creativity. In this study ( N = 405 software engineers nested in 56 teams from China), we drew from social learning theory and the theory of situational strength to test a cross-level moderated mediation model and found that the positive relationship between LGO and Psy Cap was stronger in teams low in learning behavior (i.e. weaker situational strength) and that the indirect effect of LGO on creativity via Psy Cap was significant when team learning behavior was moderate or low. Thus, our study results indicate that when the team context is less favorable for learning behavior, LGO individuals can draw from their Psy Cap to generate creativity. Objectives. Guided by a Sociocultural Health Belief Model (SHBM), this study examined the roles of cultural beliefs of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and scientific knowledge of AD in influencing the perceived threat of AD in a sample of Chinese American older adults. Method. With the input from focus groups of 17 older Chinese volunteers, survey questionnaires were refined and then delivered through face-to-face interviews to 385 participants aged 55–100 in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Results. Hierarchical regression analyses found that those aged 55–64 were more worried about AD than those aged 85 or older. Both cultural beliefs of AD and AD factual knowledge contributed to higher levels of perceived threat of AD. Education tended to moderate the effect of cultural beliefs of AD and AD knowledge on perceived threat of AD. Discussions. Findings support inclusion of key factors in the SHBM relevant to perceived threat of AD and help enrich the understanding of AD literacy from both scientific and cultural perspectives. AD education programs and interventions should help address crucial cultural beliefs related to AD and the emotional consequences (e.g., concerns or fear of AD) that might be due to the exposure to AD factual knowledge, particularly for those with limited education. Objectives: To explore the effects of combined intervention with education and progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) on quality of life (QoL), functional disability, and positive symptoms of patients with acute schizophrenia. Methods: This randomized controlled study took place in an acute schizophrenia ward in Changsha, China. Sixty-four patients with acute schizophrenia were randomly assigned to four groups: control, education, PMR, and education plus PMR. QoL was assessed with the Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire Short Form. Functional disability was assessed with the Sheehan Disability Scale. Severity of positive schizophrenia symptoms was assessed with the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms. All patients were evaluated at baseline (within 72 hours before the interventions) and at the end of weeks 5 (when the interventions ended) and week 15 (a 10-week follow-up after the interventions). Results: The sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of all four study groups were similar at baseline. Repeated-measures analysis of variance showed significant differences among the interventions in improving QoL, functional disability, and positive symptoms over time in the patients. Education and PMR alone resulted in sustained improvement of QoL during the intervention period and a 10-week follow-up but had no significant effects on functional disability or positive schizophrenia symptoms. In contrast, combined intervention with education and PMR showed better effects on improving QoL than did education or PMR alone throughout the 15-week study. It also statistically significantly improved functional disability and positive schizophrenia symptoms during the intervention period and led to sustained improvement of functional disability during the 10-week follow-up. Conclusions: A combined intervention with education and PMR is effective in improving QoL, functional disability, and positive symptoms in patients with acute schizophrenia. Background Resilience has been identified as a personal construct that may contribute to the process of healthy ageing in older people. To date, no measurement instrument has been tested to evaluate resilience in Chinese older people. Aim To examine the psychometric testing and clinical application of the Chinese version of the Resilience Scale ( RS) in Chinese older people. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used. Forward and backward translation procedures were used to obtain semantic equivalence of the original English version of the RS. Content validity was examined by identified experts, followed by exploratory factor analysis, item-to-total correlation, Cronbach's α coefficients and test-retest reliability. Results The 25-item Chinese version of Resilience Scale ( RS-CN) was fully completed by 461 Chinese older people. Cronbach's α for the total Chinese version of the Revised Resilience Scale was 0.95, with a range of 0.85-0.89 for the sub-scales. Item-to-total correlation coefficients ranged from 0.51 to 0.75 and items were excluded with item-to-total correlations coefficients lower than 0.4. The test-retest reliability of the total scale was 0.80, sub-scale test-retest reliability ranged from 0.61 to 0.620. The exploratory principal component analysis with varimax rotation revealed RS-CN to have a four-factor structure. Conclusion The RS-CN is a valid and reliable instrument for the measurement of the concept of resilience in Chinese older people. The results of this study provide cross-cultural evidence for the potential application of this scale in Chinese older people. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes continuously increases globally. The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can stratify the diabetic patients based on their different TCM syndromes and, thus, allow a personalized treatment. Metabolomics is able to provide metabolite biomarkers for disease subtypes. In this study, we applied a metabolomics approach using an ultraperformance liquid chromatography (UPLC) coupled with quadruple-time-of-flight (QTOF) mass spectrometry system to characterize the metabolic alterations of different TCM syndromes including excess and deficiency in patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (DM). We obtained a snapshot of the distinct metabolic changes of DM patients with different TCM syndromes. DM patients with excess syndrome have higher serum 2-indolecarboxylic acid, hypotaurine, pipecolic acid, and progesterone in comparison to those patients with deficiency syndrome. The excess patients have more oxidative stress as demonstrated by unique metabolite signatures than the deficiency subjects. The results provide an improved understanding of the systemic alteration of metabolites in different syndromes of DM. Most neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that acupuncture can significantly modulate brain activation patterns in healthy subjects, while only a few studies have examined clinical pain. In the current study, we combined an experimental acute low back pain (ALBP) model and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore the neural mechanisms of acupuncture analgesia. All ALBP subjects first underwent two resting state fMRI scans at baseline and during a painful episode and then underwent two additional fMRI scans, once during acupuncture stimulation (ACUP) and once during tactile stimulation (SHAM) pseudorandomly, at the BL40 acupoint. Our results showed that, compared with the baseline, the pain state had higher regional homogeneity (ReHo) values in the pain matrix, limbic system, and default mode network (DMN) and lower ReHo values in frontal gyrus and temporal gyrus; compared with the OFF status, ACUP yielded broad deactivation in subjects, including nearly all of the limbic system, pain status, and DMN, and also evoked numerous activations in the attentional and somatosensory systems; compared with SHAM, we found that ACUP induced more deactivations and fewer activations in the subjects. Multiple brain networks play crucial roles in acupuncture analgesia, suggesting that ACUP exceeds a somatosensory-guided mind-body therapy for ALBP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
