Composite adsorbents based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent candidates for solid-phase extraction (SPE) due to their diverse chemical functionality and multilevel porosity. MOF superstructures based on self-assembly at room temperature (RT) could have less energy consumption and easier manipulation due to the larger complex geometry. The π-π stacking of the benzene ring could not only enhance the interaction toward hydrophobic or plane-structured targets but also be expected to promote the formation of the MOF superstructure. In this work, in the established RT self-assembly synthesis system, several factors were investigated to see how to obtain functional MOF superstructures with a regular geometry, among which the number of benzene rings in the ligand was mainly tested for its impact on self-assembly and adsorption capacity. By means of adsorption experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, the relationship between structure and activity (SARs) was further explored. Interestingly, the MOF unit with the lowest specific surface area performed the best in adsorption. Then, the selected functional MOF superstructure and ionic liquid were used to produce the composite paper membrane facilely applied in the SPE device. After optimization of the preparation conditions and operation parameters, the established SPE-HPLC-UV method could selectively analyze tetracycline-like antibiotics in the range of 16.6-833.3 ng/g (ppb) in a meat sample. This work provided an RT synthesis method to produce a microsize MOF superstructure, with experimental and theoretical insights into the SARs, which could be expanded in the design of other MOF-based SPE composite membranes toward one group of analogues.

Fluoro-functionalized paper was prepared and applied in solid phase extraction (SPE) for the analysis of trace-level perfluorinated compounds (PFCs). The proposed fluoro-functionalized paper-based solid-phase extraction (Fp-SPE) exhibits significant advantages for sample preparation, such as the biodegradability of paper-based adsorbent, simple manipulation and low cost. Owing to the fluorous affinity, the Fp-SPE technique with high sensitivity and high selectivity is more suitable for the selective enrichment of fluorine-containing molecules from the background of non-fluorinated organic compounds in a real water sample. Combined with high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry analysis (HPLC-MS/MS), the linear range of the PFCs, including perfluorobutyric acid (PFBA), perfluorooctanic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), and perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), was 0.20–5.0 ng/L with the limits of detection (LOD) ranging from 0.04–0.05 ng/L and the limits of quantification (LOQ) ranging from 0.15-0.20 ng/L. The method was then applied to the analysis of tap water, river water and waste water samples. The results of the actual sample analysis are consistent with that by reverse phase SPE (RP-SPE).

Phthalates are one of many chemical compounds that are used as plasticisers. Packaging can transfer plasticisers to the surfaces of foods or other materials. A recent study suggested a link between fast food consumption and increased urine phthalate metabolites even though phthalates are most commonly found in food contact materials made of PVC while fast food packaging is most commonly composed of paper and paper board. Phthalates in PVC are usually present in percent concentrations. In non-PVC food contact materials, such as paper or paperboard, the concentrations, if any, are expected to be significantly lower which can greatly impact the analytical method used for their determination. Due to the widespread use of plasticised PVC in many commercial applications, background concentrations of phthalates are a concern for trace concentration analyses and background contamination must be avoided when performing these analyses. A glassware cleaning method was developed and a solvent extraction with dichloromethane and hexane was used to extract phthalates from paper-based food packaging. The extracts were then analysed using a GC-MS/MS. The minimum reporting concentrations for the method were determined to be 0.10-0.40 µg/g depending on the phthalate investigated. Phthalate concentrations in several different non-PVC printed and unprinted packaging are presented. Of the 54 packaging samples tested, 10 samples contained no reportable concentrations of any of the 6 phthalates investigated. Of those that were reportable, all measured lower than 10 µg/g and in fact, most had concentrations less than 1 µg/g. These data demonstrate that phthalates from fast food packaging do not significantly contribute to overall consumer exposure.

This paper describes, for the first time, the use of oxidized buckypaper (BP) as a sorbent membrane of a stir-disc solid phase extraction module. The original device, consisting of a BP disc (d = 34 mm) enveloped in a polypropylene mesh pouch, was designed to extract organic micropollutants (OMPs) from environmental water samples in dynamic mode. High-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was used to analyze the extracts. Several classes of pesticides and pharmaceuticals were chosen as model compounds to evaluate key parameters affecting the recovery rates. To this end, the effects of adsorption time, desorption time, stirring speed, type and volume of solvent, and sample volume were thoroughly examined. After optimization, a novel and in-depth study was conducted to find a correlation between physicochemical properties of the analytes and extraction yields. Current methods to identify the etiology of diarrhea require laboratory facilities for storage of pathogens, which is often challenging in low-resource settings. This study evaluated the efficacy of a low-cost method for preserving stool specimens for the detection of parasitic enteropathogens using Whatman 903 protein saver cards (Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, MO). Stool samples known to be positive by multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction for Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium spp., and Entamoeba histolytica parasites were preserved on 232 Whatman cards. DNA was then extracted from cards using Chelex and Qiagen extraction protocols, and tested for these parasites using multiplex real-time PCR. We included stool samples known to have a higher parasite load (cycle threshold [ct]-value < 30) and those with a lower parasite load (ct values 30-35). Sensitivities and specificities were determined using DNA extracted directly from whole stool samples using Qiagen kits (QIAGEN, Hilden, Germany). For whole stool samples with ct values < 30, preserved directly on Whatman 903 protein saver cards for Giardia analysis, the sensitivity was 100% for both Qiagen and Chelex DNA extraction. For E. histolytica, this was 100% for sensitivity for Qiagen and 80% for Chelex DNA extractions, and for Cryptosporidium, this was 80% for Qiagen and 50% for Chelex DNA extraction. The specificity was 100% for all parasites for all extraction procedures. Given the high sensitivity for stool samples with higher parasite loads, we recommend the use of the Whatman 903 protein saver card for preserving fecal specimens for the analysis of Giardia and E. histolytica using Qiagen DNA extractions in low-resource settings.

The detection of double stranded DNA (dsDNA) is often associated with the use of laboratory-bound approaches and/or with the prior generation of single stranded DNA (ssDNA), making these methods not suitable for in situ monitoring, i.e., point-of-care diagnostics. Screen-printed technology, coupled to the use of triplex forming oligonucleotides (TFO) as the recognizing probes, offers a great possibility toward the development of portable analytical tools. Moreover, the continuous demand for sustainable processes and waste lowering have highlighted the role of paper-based substrates for manufacturing easy-to-use, low-cost, and sustainable electrochemical devices. In this work, filter paper and copy paper have been utilized to produce E-DNA strips. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been exploited to immobilize the methylene blue (MB)-tagged TFO and to enhance the charge transfer kinetics at the electrode surface. Both paper-based substrates have been electrochemically characterized, and in addition, the effect of the amount of waxed layers has been evaluated. The paper-based E-DNA strips have been challenged toward the detection of three model targets, obtaining 3 and 7 nM as the detection limit, respectively, for single and double stranded sequences. The repeatability of the manufacturing (homemade) process has been evaluated with a relative standard deviation of approximately 10%. The effectiveness of the filter paper-based platform has been also evaluated in undiluted serum obtaining a similar value of the detection limit (compared to the measurements carried out in buffer solution). In addition, a synthetic PCR amplified dsDNA sequence, related to HIV, has been detected in serum samples.

This paper describes the development of an original micro-solid phase extraction device and its evaluation for the isolation of F2-isoprostanes (F2-IsoPs) from cord and maternal plasma samples. The unit is very simple and consists in a rotating disc (1.8 cm diameter) of oxidized buckypaper (BP), enwrapped in a polypropylene mesh pouch. Even if the selected F2-IsoPs have logP and pKa values that make them suitable candidates for their sorption on BP, several parameters were optimized to maximize recoveries: time of adsorption and desorption; stirring speed; volume, pH and ionic strength of the sample; type, volume, and fractions of the elution solvent; oxidation grade of BP. Among all, the last one was crucial in affecting extraction yields because of the analyte interactions with polar functionalities, introduced by a preliminary oxidative acid treatment. The investigation established the optimal oxidation time and highlighted the pros and cons of the acid activation step. All extracts were analyzed by means of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Validation was performed according to the main FDA guidelines for bioanalytical methods. Depending on the spike level and analyte, recoveries ranged between 30 and 120% with precision and accuracy values lower than 20%. Quantitative analysis was accomplished by matrix-matched calibration curves whose determination coefficients were higher than 0.95. Lower limit of quantitation (LLOQ) spanned the range 2.45–6.77 μg L−1. The validated method was applied to the analysis of eight pairs of mother/child plasma samples, revealing the presence of 8-iso-15-keto-PGF2α and 8-iso-PGE2 at a concentration of about 10 μg L−1 in most cord plasma samples of preterm newborns.

Mineral oil saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons (MOSH/MOAH) are food contaminants, mainly due migration from packaging materials made from recycled fibers, but other routes of entry into food have also been identified. Legal limits for MOSH and MOAH in food and food contact materials currently are not set, but are to be expected in the near future. For the analysis of MOSH and MOAH, the very well developed and highly automated on-line liquid chromatography–gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (LC–GC–FID) is commonly used. However, this approach is time-consuming, and data interpretation is a very challenging task. Therefore, a planar solid phase extraction (pSPE) method was developed for a rapid and efficient MOSH and MOAH screening in paper and cardboard. Based on high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC), pSPE offers the simultaneous clean-up and analysis of up to 20 samples in parallel, while MOSH and MOAH analytes were focused in two distinct target zones on silica gel HPTLC plates after a twofold development. Plate impregnation with primuline allowed the detection of MOSH by fluorescence, while MOAH were detected by UV light absorption. The pSPE screening approach provided limits of detection of 7.2 and 2.3 ng/zone for MOSH and MOAH, respectively, corresponding to 1.8 and 0.6 mg/kg paper. Coupling of pSPE with GC revealed the common MOSH and MOAH peak humps, while marker substances offered the identification of the mineral oil origin or information about recycled fiber materials. As compared to SPE–GC–FID analyses, the determined quantities of MOSH and MOAH in cardboard samples indicated pSPE as a rapid and suitable screening tool. The co-migration of polyolefin oligomeric saturated hydrocarbons, native n-alkanes, terpenes and possibly essential oils or sterol esters, however, can result in an overestimation of MOSH and MOAH. Hence, samples with pSPE results above a given limit are subsequently analyzed by GC (pSPE–GC) for confirmation and detailed evaluation.

Due to its amazing physicochemical properties and high environmental compatibility, cellulose nano-crystals (CNC) hold great promise for serving as a strategic platform for sustainable development. Now, there has been growing interest in the development of processes using waste or residual biomass as CNC source for addressing economic and environmental concerns. In the present work, a combined process involving phosphoric acid hydrolysis, enzymatic hydrolysis and sonication was proposed aiming to efficiently exact CNC from low-cost old corrugated container (OCC) pulp fiber. The effect of enzymatic hydrolysis on the yield and microstructure of resulting CNC was highlighted. Results showed that the enzymatic hydrolysis was effective in enhancing CNC yield after phosphoric acid hydrolysis. CNC was obtained with a yield of 23.98 wt% via the combined process with phosphoric acid concentration of 60 wt%, cellulase dosage of 2 mL (84 EGU) per 2g fiber and sonication intensity of 200 W. Moreover, the presence of enzymatic hydrolysis imparted the obtained CNC with improved dispersion, increased crystallinity and thermal stability.

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are widely used as multi-purpose surfactants or water/oil repellents. In order to understand the contamination level and compositional profiles of PFAAs in aqueous environment in textile, leather, and paper making industrial areas, surface waters and tap waters were collected along the watershed of the Qiantang River where China's largest textile, leather, and paper making industrial bases are located. For comparison, surface water and tapwater samples were also collected in Hangzhou and its adjacent areas. 17 PFAAs were analyzed by solid phase extraction-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The results show that the total concentrations of PFAAs (ΣPFAAs) in the Qiantang River waters ranged from 106.1 to 322.9 ng/L, averaging 164.2 ng/L. The contamination levels have been found to be extremely high, comparable to the levels of the most serious PFAA contamination in surface waters of China. The PFAA composition profiles were characterized by the dominant PFOA (average 58.1% of the total PFAAs), and PFHxA (average 18.8%). The ΣPFAAs in tap water ranged from 9.5 to 174.8 ng/L, showing PFAA compositional pattern similar to the surface waters. Good correlations between PFAA composition profiles in tap waters and the surface waters were observed.

2,4,7,9-Tetramethyl-5-decyne-4,7-diol (TMDD) is a non-ionic surfactant which is preferentially used as defoamer in paints and printing ink and for the treatment of surfaces. Effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been identified as the domination point sources for TMDD in rivers since the removal rate of the compound in the WWTPs is in general less than 70%. However, the dominating entry pathways of TMDD into the sewage were unknown so far. In this study effluents from both, municipal WWTPs with and without treatment of indirect industrial dischargers and from industrial WWTPs with direct discharge of wastewater into receiving rivers were analyzed for the first time to identify the proportions of TMDD coming from domestic wastewater and from various industrial sources. Moreover, rivers were samples before and after the influent of sewage water from WWTPs. The TMDD concentrations in the water samples were measured using solid phase extraction (SPE) followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). High TMDD concentrations were found in rivers (up to 63.5 μg/L), and in effluents of WWTPs (up to 310 μg/L) affected by wastewater from paper recycling industry and factories producing paint and printing ink. Concentrations of TMDD revealed to be far higher in wastewater from factories processing recycled paper (up to 113 μg/L) compared to wastewater from factories not processing recycled paper (0.066 μg/L). The results indicate that the use of recycling paper in the paper production process is the dominating reason for increased TMDD concentrations in wastewaters and receiving rivers due to the wash out of TMDD from the paper impregnated with printing ink. Very high TMDD concentrations (up to 3300 μg/L) were also detected in wastewater from a printing ink factory and a paint factory.

The ability to link criminal activity and identity using validated analytical approaches can be of great value to forensic scientists. Herein, the factors affecting the recovery and detection of inorganic and organic energetic material residues within chemically or physically enhanced fingermarks on paper and glass substrates are presented using micro-bore anion exchange chromatography with suppressed conductivity detection. Fingermarks on both surfaces were enhanced using aluminium powder or ninhydrin after spiking with model test mixtures or through contact with black-powder substitutes. A quantitative study of the effects of environmental/method interferences, the sweat matrix, the surface and the enhancement technique on the relative anion recovery of forensically relevant species is presented. It is shown that the analytical method could detect target analytes at the nanogram level even within excesses of enhancement reagents and their reaction products when using solid phase extraction and/or microfiltration. To our knowledge, this work demonstrates for the first time that ion chromatography can detect anions in energetic materials within fingermarks on two very different surfaces, after operational enhancement techniques commonly used by forensic scientists and police have been applied.

Segmented flow analysis (SFA) and ion chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (IC-PAD) are widely used analytical techniques for the analysis of glucose, fructose, and sucrose in tobacco. In the work presented here, 27 cured tobacco leaves and 21 tobacco products were analyzed for sugars using SFA and IC. The results of these analyses demonstrated that both techniques identified the same trends in sugar content across tobacco leaf and tobacco product types. However, comparison of results between techniques was limited by the selectivity of the SFA method, which relies on the specificity of the reaction of p-hydroxybenzoic acid hydrazide (PAHBAH) with glucose and fructose to generate a detectable derivative. Sugar amines and chlorogenic acid, which are found in tobacco, are also known to react with PAHBAH to form a reaction product that interferes with the analysis of fructose and glucose. To mitigate this problem, solid phase extraction (SPE) was used to remove interferences such as sugar amines and chlorogenic acid from sample matrices prior to SFA. A combination of C18 and cation exchange solid phase extraction cartridges was used, and the results from SFA and IC analyses showed significant convergence in the results of both analytical methods. For example, the average difference between the results from the SFA and IC analyses for flue-cured tobacco samples dropped by 73% when the two-step C18/cation exchange resin sample cleanup was used.

The authors examined the potential of pulp mill effluent from pulp-producing countries (Canada, Brazil, New Zealand) to affect fish reproduction. Specifically, the estrogenic effects in juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) pulse-exposed to 11 different mill effluent extracts (intraperitoneal injections of solid-phase extraction-dichloromethane nonpolar fraction). The results indicated that effluent extracts were estrogenic in juvenile trout irrespective of the gender, as reflected by increasing level of plasma vitellogenin (VTG; Brazil New Zealand Canada). Despite the high variability observed among mills, differences in VTG levels were related to the type of mill process (kraft elementary chlorine-free kraft thermomechanical pulping). Moreover, effluent treatments did not appear to significantly decrease VTG induction. A consistent estrogenic effect was observed in those mills that process a combination of feedstocks (softwood and hardwood), with the highest increase in VTG related to eucalyptus feedstock. The results demonstrate significant estrogenic effects of pulp mill effluents on chronically exposed juvenile trout, suggesting that in vivo metabolic activation of precursors is necessary to cause the observed increases in VTG levels. This molecular estrogenic response provides a useful starting point for predicting population-level impacts through the adverse outcome pathway methodology. The conversion of paper-grade pulps into dissolving pulps requires efficient strategies and process steps to remove low-molecular noncellulosic macromolecules generally known as hemicelluloses. Current strategies include alkaline extractions and enzymatic treatments. This study focused on the evaluation of extraction efficiencies in alkaline extractions of three economically interesting hardwood species: beech (Fagus sylvatica), birch (Betula papyrifera), and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus). Substrate pulps were subjected to alkaline treatments at different temperatures and alkalinities using white liquor as the alkali source, followed by analyses of both pulps and hemicellulose-containing extraction lyes. The extracted hardwood xylans have strong potential as an ingredient in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Subsequent analyses revealed strong dependencies of the extraction efficiencies and molar mass distributions of hemicelluloses on the process variables of temperature and effective alkalinity. The hemicellulose content of the initial pulps, the hardwood species, and the type of applied base played minor roles.

A low-cost, simple, and highly selective analytical method was developed for sensitive visual detection of selenium in human urine both outdoors and at home, by coupling hydride generation with headspace solid-phase extraction using quantum dots (QDs) immobilized on paper. The visible fluorescence from the CdTe QDs immobilized on paper was quenched by H2Se from hydride generation reaction and headspace solid-phase extraction. The potential mechanism was investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as well as Density Functional Theory (DFT). Potential interferences from coexisting ions, particularly Ag(+), Cu(2+), and Zn(2+), were eliminated. The selectivity was significantly increased because the selenium hydride was effectively separated from sample matrices by hydride generation. Moreover, due to the high sampling efficiency of hydride generation and headspace solid phase extraction, the sensitivity and the limit of detection (LOD) were significantly improved compared to conventional methods. A LOD of 0.1 μg L(-1) and a relative standard deviation (RSD, n = 7) of 2.4% at a concentration of 20 μg L(-1) were obtained when using a commercial spectrofluorometer as the detector. Furthermore, a visual assay based on the proposed method was developed for the detection of Se, 5 μg L(-1) of selenium in urine can be discriminated from the blank solution with the naked eye. The proposed method was validated by analysis of certified reference materials and human urine samples with satisfactory results.

This paper describes the first approach at combining paper microfluidics with electrochemiluminescent (ECL) detection. Inkjet printing is used to produce paper microfluidic substrates which are combined with screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) to create simple, cheap, disposable sensors which can be read without a traditional photodetector. The sensing mechanism is based on the orange luminescence due to the ECL reaction of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)) with certain analytes. Using a conventional photodetector, 2-(dibutylamino)ethanol (DBAE) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) could be detected to levels of 0.9 μM and 72 μM, respectively. Significantly, a mobile camera phone can also be used to detect the luminescence from the sensors. By analyzing the red pixel intensity in digital images of the ECL emission, a calibration curve was constructed demonstrating that DBAE could be detected to levels of 250 μM using the phone.

Pulp and paper mills generate pollutants associated to their effluents depending upon the type of process, type of the wood materials, process technology applied, management practices, internal recirculation of the effluent for recovery, the amount of water used in the industrial process and type of secondary treatment. This study is the first that reports a simultaneous evaluation of the effects of tertiary treatments by fungi (Rhizopus oryzae and Pleurotus sajor caju), by enzyme (laccase) and by an oxidation process (photo-Fenton) on individual phenols (vanillin, guaiacol, phloroglucinol, vanillic acid and syringic acid) of a Eucalyptus globulus bleached kraft pulp and paper mill final effluent after secondary treatment (BKPME). The tertiary treatments were applied on BKPME samples and in BKPME samples supplemented with extra concentration of each phenol. Tertiary treatments by Rhizopus oryzae and photo-Fenton oxidation were able of complete removal (100%) of phenols on BKPME samples whereas P. sajor caju and laccase were able of 60-85% removal. On BKPME samples with added concentration of each phenol, photo-Fenton was the only treatment capable of total phenols removal (100%), which suggests a great potential for its application.

The combination of hemicellulose extraction with chemical pulping processes is one approach to generate a sugar feedstock amenable to biochemical transformation to fuels and chemicals. Extractions of hemicellulose from silver birch (Betula pendula) wood chips using either water or Kraft white liquor (NaOH, Na(2)S, and Na(2)CO(3)) were performed under conditions compatible with Kraft pulping, using times ranging between 20 and 90 min, temperatures of 130-160 degrees C, and effective alkali (EA) charges of 0-7%. The chips from select extractions were subjected to subsequent Kraft pulping and the refined pulps were made into handsheets. Several metrics for handsheet strength properties were compared with a reference pulp made without an extraction step. This study demonstrated that white liquor can be utilized to extract xylan from birch wood chips prior to Kraft cooking without decreasing the pulp yield and paper strength properties, while simultaneously impregnating cooking alkali into the wood chips. However, for the alkaline conditions tested extractions above pH 10 resulted in low concentrations of xylan. Water extractions resulted in the highest final concentrations of xylan; yielding a liquor without the presence of toxic or inhibitory inorganics and minimal soluble aromatics that we demonstrate can be successfully enzymatically hydrolyzed to monomeric xylose and fermented to succinic acid. However, water extractions were found to negatively impact some pulp properties including decreases in compression strength, bursting strength, tensile strength, and tensile stiffness while exhibiting minimal impact on elongation and slight improvement in tearing strength index.

This study combined chemical analysis and bioassays of paper mill effluents and their components in order to determine their antiestrogenic activity. The bioassay comprised a yeast two-hybrid assay incorporating the estrogen receptor alpha (hERalpha) and an hERalpha competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Samples were fractionated by solid phase extraction (SPE) with a C18 disk and a Florisil cartridge to obtain four fractions. The final fraction, eluted with methanol from the Florisil cartridge after pre-extraction by the C18 disk, was the most active in the two-hybrid assay, and its antiestrogenic potency, expressed as the equivalent concentration to 4-hydroxytamoxifen (OHT), was 277 nM. Seven resin acids had antiestrogenic activity in the active fraction as determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and their concentration levels ranged from 0.11 to 12 microg/L. All the resin acids exhibited greater activity than OHT; their activity relative to OHT ranged from 2.8- to 4.0-fold in the yeast two-hybrid assay. Based on the chemical analysis data and relative potency of resin acids from the yeast two-hybrid assay, the contribution ratio of resin acids accounted for 72% of the observed antiestrogenic activity of the extract. Furthermore, no resin acid showed any affinity for the estrogen receptor in the ELISA. This study showed that analysis combining the SPE method and the yeast two-hybrid assay is likely to be effective for the comprehensive monitoring of resin acids in paper mill industrial discharge areas.

In this study, a new sampling method called headspace mulberry paper bag micro solid phase extraction (HS-MPB-mu-SPE) combined to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry has been applied for the analysis of volatile aromas of liquid essential oils from Bulgarian rose and Provence lavender. The technique uses an adsorbent (Tenax TA) contained in a mulberry paper bag, minimal amount of organic solvent. Linearities for the six-points calibration curves were excellent. LOD values were in the rage from 0.38 ng mL(-1) to 0.77 ng mL(-1). Overall, precision and recovery were generally good. Phenethyl alcohol and citronellol were the main components in the essential oil from Bulgarian rose. Linalyl acetate and linalool were the most abundant components in the essential oils from true lavender or lavandin. Additionally, the relative extraction efficiencies of proposed method have been compared with HS-SPME. The overall extraction efficiency was evaluated by the relative concentration factors (CF) of the several characteristic components. CF values by HS-MPB-mu-SPE were lower than those by headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME). The HS-MPB-mu-SPE method is very simple to use, inexpensive, rapid, requires small sample amounts and solvent consumption. In addition, this method allowed combining of extraction, enrichment, and clean-up in a single step. HS-MPB-mu-SPE and GC/MS is a promising technique for the characterization of volatile aroma compounds from liquid essential oils.

A novel paper spray cartridge with an integrated solid phase extraction (SPE) column is described. The cartridge performs extraction and pre-concentration, as well as sample ionization by paper spray, from complex samples such as plasma. The cartridge allows for selective enrichment of target molecules from larger sample volumes and removal of the matrix, which significantly improved the signal intensity of target compounds in plasma samples by paper spray ionization. Detection limits, quantitative performance, recovery, ionization suppression, and the effects of sample volume were evaluated for five drugs: carbamazepine, atenolol, sulfamethazine, diazepam, and alprazolam. Compared with direct paper spray analysis of dried plasma spots, paper spray analysis using the integrated solid phase extraction improved the detection limits significantly by a factor of 14-70, depending on the drug. The improvement in detection limits was, in large part, due to the capability of analyzing larger sample volumes. In addition, ionization suppression was found to be lower and recovery was higher for paper spray with integrated SPE, as compared to direct paper spray analysis. By spiking an isotopically labeled internal standard into the plasma sample, a linear calibration curve for the drugs was obtained from the limit of detection (LOD) to 1 μg/mL, indicating that this method can be used for quantitative analysis. The paper spray cartridge with integrated SPE could prove valuable for analytes that ionize poorly, in applications where lower detection limits are required, or on portable mass spectrometers. The improved performance comes at the cost of requiring a more complex paper spray cartridge and requiring larger sample volumes than those used in typical direct paper spray ionization.

Two low-volume solvent continuous extraction methods are applied to the extraction of paper matrices. In the methods reported here, a complex mixture of fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) and azo dyes (AZOs) used in paper materials intended to come into contact with foodstuffs was extracted by using subcritical water extraction (SWE) and dynamic sonication-assisted solvent extraction (DSASE). Rationale for the work is based upon migration concerns of these groups of analytes from the packaging to the packaged items, thus compromising their subjective and/or objective quality. In SWE, sample was extracted in 21 min with 0.5 mL of water, whereas the DSASE method required 11 min and used 7 mL of water. DSASE was further developed by incorporating an organic modifier in order to change water polarity, thus improving extraction of moderately polar analytes. This way, modified-DSASE used a total organic volume of 0.9 mL which represents a reduction of 200 times in organic solvent consumption (200 mL versus approximately 1.0 mL) and 11 times in extraction time (2 h versus 11 min) compared to the existing methods. SWE was able to extract only 9 out of 12 test analytes with average recoveries between 10 and 25% whereas modified-DSASE succeed in extracting all the target analytes with an average recovery of 89%. A novel method for the determination of fluorene and acenaphthene on solid phase extraction–room-temperature phosphorescence (SPE–RTP) was studied. β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was chemically bonded onto chromatography paper by reaction with epichorohydrin in an ultrasonic bath. The RTP signal of fluorene and acenaphthene included on the β-CD-modified paper was increased more than 10 times compared with non-modified filter paper, indicating the formation of the inclusion complex. The conditions for the of RTP of compounds were studied in detail. The linear ranges of fluorene and acenaphthene concentrations to the RTP intensity were over two orders of magnitude (8.0 × 10−7–4.0 × 10−5 mol/L for fluorene) with a correlation coefficient of 0.999. The concentration limits of detection for fluorene and acenaphthene were 1.11 × 10−8 mol/L and 3.8 × 10−7 mo/L, respectively. When the sampling volume was 10 µL, the absolute LODs for fluorene and acenaphthene were 18.4 pg/spot and 0.58 ng/spot, respectively. The modified filter paper was used for solid phase extraction (SPE) and the retention behaviour of fluorene and acenaphthene was examined. The enrichment efficiency of the analytes was higher than 100-fold. The SPE–RTP coupling technique was applied directly to the determination of fluorene and acenaphthnene in environmental water samples. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A rapid non-destructive sampling technique for the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by paper sheets is described. A capillary, which is connected to a microcolumn packed with Tenax TA, is inserted between two sheets at the centre of a paper stack encapsulated inside a PET/Al/PE composite foil. The other end of the microcolumn is connected to a gas-tight syringe and an appropriate volume of gaseous phase is aspirated. The microcolumn is then thermally desorbed in a modified GC inlet (modification is presented) and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In the chromatogram from the analysis of artificially aged paper sample 21 compounds were identified. Advantages of the method including the short sampling time (1 min), simplicity and economic aspect are discussed.

A solid phase extraction (SPE) high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 10 phthalic acid esters (dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, dipropyl phthalate, benzylbutyl phthalate, diisobutyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, diamyl phthalate, di-n-hexyl phthalate, di-n-octyl phthalate and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate) released from food paper packaging materials. The use of distilled water, 3% acetic acid (w/v), 10% ethanol (v/v) and 95% ethanol (v/v) instead of the different types of food simulated the migration of 10 phthalic acid esters from food paper packaging materials; the phthalic acid esters in four food simulants were enriched and purified by a C18 SPE column and nitrogen blowing, and quantified by HPLC with a diode array detector. The chromatographic conditions and extraction conditions were optimized and all 10 of the phthalate acid esters had a maximum absorbance at 224 nm. The method showed limitations of detection in the range of 6.0-23.8 ng/mL the correlation coefficients were greater than 0.9999 in all cases, recovery values ranged between 71.27 and 106.97% at spiking levels of 30, 60 and 90 ng/mL and relative standard deviation values ranged from 0.86 to 8.00%. The method was considered to be simple, fast and reliable for a study on the migration of these 10 phthalic acid esters from food paper packaging materials into food.

There is increasing concern about chemical pollutants that have the ability to mimic hormones, the so-called endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs). One of the main reasons for concern is the possible effect of EDCs on human health. EDCs may be released into the environment in different ways, and one of the most significant sources is industrial wastewater. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the treatment performance of different wastewater treatment procedures (biological treatment, filtration, advanced oxidation processes) for the reduction of chemical oxygen demand and seven selected EDCs (dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, benzyl butyl phthalate, bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, bisphenol A and nonylphenol) from wastewaters from a mill producing 100 % recycled paper. Two pilot plants were running in parallel and the following treatments were compared: (i) anaerobic biological treatment followed by aerobic biological treatment, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis (RO), and (ii) anaerobic biological treatment followed by membrane bioreactor and RO. Moreover, at lab-scale, four different advanced oxidation processes (Fenton reaction, photo-Fenton reaction, photocatalysis with TiO(2), and ozonation) were applied. The results indicated that the concentrations of selected EDCs from paper mill wastewaters were effectively reduced (100 %) by both combinations of pilot plants and photo-Fenton oxidation (98 %), while Fenton process, photocatalysis with TiO(2) and ozonation were less effective (70 % to 90 %, respectively).

Serum N-glycan profiles for use as clinical biomarkers of disease(s) is of increasing scientific interest. Promising profiles have already been identified in several diseases, including cancer, Alzheimer's, and diabetes. Venipuncture is routinely performed to collect the blood necessary for this type of analysis, but blood from a fingerstick placed on filter paper (known as dried blood spots (DBS)) is more advantageous. This sampling method is less invasive than "classical" blood drawing, can be performed conveniently at home, and avoids cumbersome shipping and storage procedures. Here, we present a procedure for N-glycan profiling of DBS samples consisting of reconstitution of DBS in N-glycan release buffer, protein denaturation, enzymatic N-glycan release and PGC Solid phase extraction (SPE) for purification. Samples are then analyzed using nanoHPLC-PGC-chip-TOF-MS to generate N-glycan profiles. Using this method, ~150 N-glycan structures can be monitored, originating from 44 N-glycan compositions that can be analyzed with good repeatability (the coefficient of variation (%CV) is ~20%). To assess the stability of the N-glycans during storage, DBS samples were stored at room temperature (RT) and -80 °C. No major differences in N-glycan composition could be observed. Moreover, upon comparison of the N-glycan profile of DBS with profiles obtained from serum, which is a classical matrix for N-glycan profiling, similar patterns were observed. The method facilitates large population studies for N-glycan profiling, and is especially advantageous for children and the elderly, who have limited blood supplies, as well as animal studies in small mammals.

This study builds on a series of investigations characterizing substances in kraft mill chemical recovery condensates that depress sex steroids in fish. Here, incubations of goldfish testis androgen receptors (AR) with condensate extracts were used to investigate the potential role of androgens in hormone depressions. Condensates contained variable levels of AR ligands, with the highest amounts in nonpolar extracts of filtered solids prior to solid phase extraction (SPE). High pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) fractionation recovered the majority of activity in one fraction, with ligands detected in three additional fractions. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis of the most active fraction confirmed the two most abundant components as the diterpenes manool and geranyl linalool. Manool exhibited a relative affinity for the AR that was 300 fold less than testosterone and accounted for 26% of total filtered solids activity. Geranyl linalool exhibited no affinity for the AR. Three additional diterpenoid families were tentatively identified as principal components of the three other androgenic HPLC fractions. Highly porous polypyrrole (PPy)-nanocellulose paper sheets have been evaluated as inexpensive and disposable electrochemically controlled three-dimensional solid phase extraction materials. The composites, which had a total anion exchange capacity of about 1.1 mol kg(-1), were used for extraction and subsequent release of negatively charged fluorophore tagged DNA oligomers via galvanostatic oxidation and reduction of a 30-50 nm conformal PPy layer on the cellulose substrate. The ion exchange capacity, which was, at least, two orders of magnitude higher than those previously reached in electrochemically controlled extraction, originated from the high surface area (i.e. 80 m(2) g(-1)) of the porous composites and the thin PPy layer which ensured excellent access to the ion exchange material. This enabled the extractions to be carried out faster and with better control of the PPy charge than with previously employed approaches. Experiments in equimolar mixtures of (dT)(6), (dT)(20), and (dT)(40) DNA oligomers showed that all oligomers could be extracted, and that the smallest oligomer was preferentially released with an efficiency of up to 40% during the reduction of the PPy layer. These results indicate that the present material is very promising for the development of inexpensive and efficient electrochemically controlled ion-exchange membranes for batch-wise extraction of biomolecules.

This study investigates whether pulse exposure to Chilean pulp and paper mill effluent solid phase extracted (SPE) extracts via intraperitoneal injection (IP), would result in changes in the activities of the respiratory metabolic enzymes citrate synthase (CS) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in rainbow trout livers. It also investigated if an alteration in liver metabolic capacity influenced the liver detoxification processes and estrogenic effects previously reported. Besides, a comparison of those enzymatic activities with fish IP injected with SPE extracts of two model effluents coming from industries that process 100% different type of feedstock (softwood, SW and hardwood, HW) was also evaluated. An initial induction of the anaerobic metabolism (increase in LDH enzymatic activity) was detected in all Chilean pulp mill effluent extracts evaluated, contrary to the initial unaltered aerobic metabolism (CS enzymatic activity) observed. A compensatory relationship in energy metabolism (Pasteur effect) was observed when comparing both enzymatic activities of fish exposed to those effluent extracts. LDH and CS activities observed in fish injected with Chilean extracts seem to be related to the effects observed in fish injected with SW extracts. This study showed that intraperitoneal injection of pulp and paper mill effluent extracts affected the anaerobic and aerobic metabolic capacities in rainbow trout livers, but this metabolic alteration did not affect detoxification capability or estrogenic effect previously reported.

Estrogenic activity of kraft pulp mill effluents (P. radiata, E. globulus and mixed -50% E. globulus and 50% P. radiata) was evaluated by the yeast estrogen screen assay. The estrogenic activity values were relatively low, ranking between 1.475 and 0.383 ng/L of EE2 eq. (Estrogenic equivalent of 17 a-ethynylestradiol), where the highest value corresponds to the E. globulus effluent and the lowest value to the P. radiata effluent. Analysis by solid phase extraction (SPE) and gas chromatography—mass spectrometry (GC-MS) of chemical compounds present in all three effluents detected at least five major groups of organic compounds, corresponding to fatty acids, hydrocarbons, phenols, sterols and triterpenes. A bioanalytical method is developed and validated for determination of sulfadoxine (SD) and sulfamethoxazole (SM) in 100 microL capillary blood dried on sampling paper (Whatman 31ET Chr). SD and SM are extracted with 2000 microL perchloric acid and the liquid phase is loaded onto ENV+ solid-phase extraction columns. SD, SM, and the internal standard are separated on a Purospher STAR RP-18 liquid chromatography column (150 x 4.6 mm) with a mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile-sodium acetate buffer pH 5.2, I = 0.1 (33:67, v/v). Analytes are detected with UV at 256 nm. Lower limit of quantitation is 5 micromol/L, where precisions are 4.2% and 3.9% for SD and SM, respectively. Three brands of sampling papers have been compared with respect to absorption properties, extraction recoveries, and variations. Punching out dried blood spots (DBS) instead of cutting spots into strips prior to extraction has been evaluated by examining precision and accuracy of SD and SM determinations. Importance of uniformity of types of sampling paper, sampling volume and biological matrix, benefit of punching out discs from DBS, and impact on absorption properties of different brands of sampling papers are discussed. Avoiding pre-analytical errors whenever possible results in concentrations determined being more accurate and precise.

Previous studies have shown that drug concentrations in blood can change during storage, especially at room temperature, but even labile drugs such as cocaine may be stable in dried blood spots (DBS). A new method has been developed for the analysis of hydrolytically labile drugs in blood spots on filter paper in order to assess their degradation during a storage period of one month. The drugs selected included flunitrazepam, temazepam, oxazepam, lorazepam, nitrazepam, diazepam, and cocaine. A Guthrie card 903 was spotted with 100 microL of blood containing the drugs at concentrations of 1000 ng/mL and left overnight to dry at room temperature. The filter paper was suspended in extraction buffer for 1 h with ultrasonication. Drugs were then extracted from the buffer by solid-phase extraction using Clean Screen((R)) columns and analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Method validation showed that all calibration curves were linear over the concentration range 5-200 ng/spot with correlation coefficients of 0.994-0.999. Interday and intraday precisions at three concentrations (10, 50, and 100 ng/spot) were 1.6-18.3% and 2.8-14.7%, respectively. Limits of detection were 0.29-0.74 ng/spot, and lower limits of quantitation were 0.99-2.46 ng/spot. Recoveries of all analytes were in the range 81-106%. DBS were stored in duplicate at room temperature, 4 degrees C, and -20 degrees C for up to one month. Degradation of the drugs in DBS at all storage conditions was less than for the corresponding liquid blood samples stored under similar conditions and more than 80% of each analyte could be recovered from the samples.

A bioanalytical method for the determination of lumefantrine in 100 microl blood applied onto sampling paper, by solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatography, has been developed and validated. Whatman 31 ET Chr sampling paper was pre-treated with 0.75 M tartaric acid before sampling capillary blood to enable a high recovery of lumefantrine. Lumefantrine was extracted from the sampling paper, then further purified using solid-phase extraction and finally quantified with HPLC. The between-day variation was below 10% over the range 0.4-25 microM. The lower limit of quantification was 0.25 microM in 100 microl capillary blood. No decrease in lumefantrine concentration in dried blood spot is seen after 4 months storage at 22 degrees C. The method was also evaluated in field samples from patients in Tanzania after treatment with lumefantrine/artemether. Lumefantrine could be estimated accurately enough to assess bioavailability and treatment compliance on day 7 (i.e. 4 days after the last dose) after a standard regimen with the lumefantrine/artemether combination.
