The Poynting effect generically manifests itself as the extension of the material in the direction perpendicular to an applied shear deformation (torsion) and is a material parameter hard to design. Unlike isotropic solids, in designed structures, peculiar couplings between shear and normal deformations can be achieved and exploited for practical applications. Here, a metamaterial is engineered that can be programmed to contract or extend under torsion and undergo nonlinear twist under compression. First, it is shown that the system exhibits a novel type of inverted Poynting effect, where axial compression induces a nonlinear torsion. Then the Poynting modulus of the structure is programmed from initial negative values to zero and positive values via a pre‐compression applied prior to torsion. The work opens avenues for programming nonlinear elastic moduli of materials and tuning the couplings between shear and normal responses by rational design. Obtaining inverted and programmable Poynting effects in metamaterials inspires diverse applications from designing machine materials, soft robots, and actuators to engineering biological tissues, implants, and prosthetic devices functioning under compression and torsion. The normal force of magnetorheological (MR) fluids in porous foam metal was investigated in this paper. The dynamic repulsive normal force was studied using an advanced commercial rheometer under oscillatory shear modes. In the presence of magnetic fields, the influences of time, strain amplitude, frequency and shear rate on the normal force of MR fluids drawn from the porous foam metal were systematically analysed. The experimental results indicated that the magnetic field had the greatest effect on the normal force, and the effect increased incrementally with the magnetic field. Increasing the magnetic field produced a step-wise increase in the shear gap. However, other factors in the presence of a constant magnetic field only had weak effects on the normal force. This behaviour can be regarded as a magnetic field-enhanced normal force, as increases in the magnetic field resulted in more MR fluids being released from the porous foam metal, and the chain-like magnetic particles in the MR fluids becoming more elongated with aggregates spanning the gap between the shear plates. This paper presents the normal force phenomena for static and steady shear mode in magnetorheological (MR) fluid. The results of the study show that, in the static mode, with the magnetic flux density increasing, the normal force will increase until the maximum, and then reduce to a steady value, and during the increasing stage, it can be expressed as F N =4667* B 2.48 approximately; however, in the steady shear mode, only when the magnetic flux density achieves a certain value, the normal force phenomena will be observed clearly, and with the increasing of magnetic field, the normal force reaches the maximum, and then also decreases to a steady value. Besides, by defining the time parameters of dynamic response, the dynamic response of normal force is studied. This paper proposes a tactile display providing both shear and normal feedback to the fingertip for generating three-axis tactile feedback during teleoperation of a surgical robot. The display is composed of five balloons actuated by controlling the pneumatic pressure. The implemented display is 18?mm?×?18?mm?×?15?mm. This size is suitable for mounting the display onto the master controls of a surgical robot. The maximum normal and shear displacements are 2 and 1.3?mm, respectively. The proposed tactile display may provide perceivable stimuli to a human finger pad in all five directions: normal, distal, proximal, radial, and ulnar. Abstract: The normal forces of magnetorheological fluids under oscillatory shear are investigated by a commercial magneto-rheometer with plate–plate geometry. At the constant strain amplitude and frequency, the normal forces almost keep a steady value with the testing time if the strain amplitude is smaller than the critical value. When a larger strain is applied, they will fluctuate periodically. Under the strain sweep mode, the relationships between normal forces and strain amplitude can be divided into three regions: linear viscoelastic region, nonlinear viscoelastic region and the viscoplastic region. Under the frequency sweep method, it is found that the angular frequency show little influence on the normal forces. At last, the normal forces increase with increasing of the temperature under a low magnetic field, while they decrease under a high magnetic field. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The nanotribology mechanism of alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAM) chemisorbed on a gold surface under a non-flat contact by a tilt plane was studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The molecular trajectories, tilt angles, normal forces, shear forces, and frictional coefficient of the SAM were evaluated during the friction and relaxation processes for various parameters, including the tilt angle of the slider, interference magnitude, and SAM length. At the nanoscale, the magnitude of interface interactional forces is strongly dependent on the magnitude of the contact area, not on the surface geometry. The contact area and the exerted normal force of the SAM increase with decreasing the tilt angle of the slider at the same contact interference. In contrast, the periods in both normal force and shear force are gradually delayed as the tilt angle of the slider increases. Once the contact interference increases, the normal force and shear force increase together. During the sliding friction process with a smaller tilt slider angle, SAM molecules can maintain a better collective ordered structure. Short SAM molecules are more sensitive to a compressive loading and react to a larger normal force under the same contact interference due to the deformation of a larger tilt angle and decrease in chain length. In this paper, we report a new flexible capacitive tactile sensor array with the capability of measuring both normal and shear force distribution using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a base material. A tactile cell consists of two thick PDMS layers with embedded electrodes, an air gap, and a pillar structure. The pillar structure is formed at the center of each tactile cell between the air gap under a large bump. There are four capacitors in a cell to decompose the contact force into normal and shear components. Four capacitors are arranged in a square form. If a normal force is applied on the bump, the PDMS layer on the pillar structure is compressed, and the air gap between the top and bottom electrodes decreases, resulting in the increase in all four capacitances. If a shear force is applied, a torque is induced around the pillar. There- fore, the capacitance of the two capacitors increases, whereas that of the other two decreases. The bump and the pillar structure play a critical role to generate a torque for shear force measurement. The sensor has been realized in an 8 x 8 array of unit sensors, and each unit sensor responds to normal and shear stresses in all three axes, respectively. Measurement of a single sensor shows that the full-scale range of detectable force is about 10 mN, which corresponds to 131 kPa in three directions. The sensitivities of a cell measured with a current setup are 2.5%/mN, 3.0%/mN, and 2.9%/mN for the x-, y-, and z-directions, respectively. Normal and shear force images are also captured from a 4 x 4 array of the fabricated sensor. Distinctive characteristic patterns appear when a shear force is applied to the sensor. An analytical method is applied in the calculations of ball contact angles varying with the position angle of a ball bearing with a centrifugal force. This is further extended to investigate the thermal slipping behavior occurring at the contact surface of the inner raceway. The sliding velocities at the contact area are analyzed in the present study by the ball bearing contact mechanisms. The shear stress created at this contact surface is evaluated by considering the temperature-pressure dependence of the lubricant viscosity. The contact temperature of a ball and the inner raceway is obtained if the frictional heat created by the shear stress is available. Under the condition of controlling the outer raceway temperature, the thermal deformations of all components of a ball bearing are taken into account in the evaluation of bearing performance. Comparisons are made for several parameters, including the normal load, linear slip velocity, and linear traction force, between the results of considering the thermal effect or ignoring it. The friction torque evaluated by taking the thermal effect into account is higher than the torque evaluated when ignoring the thermal effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The influence of shear deformation on the normal force of magnetorheological elastomer was investigated. In quasi-static shear, the normal force decreases with increasing shear strain at low magnetic field, while increases with increasing shear strain when the magnetic field exceeds 452mT. In oscillatory shear, the normal force shows similar trend. However, it decreases sharply when the strain amplitude exceeds 7%. A microstructure based theory was proposed to investigate this phenomenon. Under shearing, the elastic modulus decreases while the magnetic torque increases, which lead to the different trends of normal force at different magnetic fields.
