Quantitative methods are needed to evaluate the ecological effects of fishing forage species upon which predators depend. African penguin Spheniscus demersus numbers at the Robben Island colony rose during the 1990s co-incidental with a marked increase in sardine Sardinops sagax and anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus abundances, but decreased appreciably during the 2000s as sardine suffered a series of poor recruitments. A population dynamics model is developed which relates penguin adult annual mortality to local sardine biomass, and is fit to penguin moult counts and re-sightings of tagged penguins. The predator -- prey interaction is best explained by a sardine-penguin mortality relationship with average penguin survival decreasing only when the local sardine biomass is less than approximately one-quarter of the maximum observed. Results suggest that the rapid growth of the colony during the 1990s was driven primarily by immigration. Penguin projections are generated by linking to future sardine abundances predicted under the operational management procedure used to set catch limits for these sardine and anchovy fisheries, and compared with equivalent scenarios without fishing. Results indicate that fishing is likely to have a relatively small impact on penguins, especially when compared with uncertainties that arise from the variable spatial distribution of the sardine population. We simulated transport of Pacific sardine eggs captured offshore of California in spring of 2001–2012 using a regional ocean circulation model. Eggs were assumed to have developed into larvae within a few days and were modeled using five behavioral patterns: passive transport, diel vertical migration, diel vertical migration combined with swimming against the current, diel migration combined with migration toward shore, and diel migration combined with migration toward the best habitat. Simulated larvae with no swimming behavior were advected far offshore to poor habitat where they were unlikely to survive. Diel vertical migration resulted in less offshore transport because larvae were less affected by surface currents during the day. However, in half the years simulated nearly all juveniles were also located in poor habitat by late summer in this scenario. Swimming against the current combined with diel vertical migration resulted in similar transport patterns to the diel-vertical-migration scenario because currents dominated the transport of eggs and small larvae during the spring and early summer. Migration toward shore resulted in a large fraction of juveniles being located in appropriate habitat during late summer in all years. Migration toward the best habitat was the best strategy modeled. This strategy resulted in a slightly greater proportion of larvae being located in appropriate habitat at the end of summer than the swimming-toward-shore scenario, despite the fact that most larvae were located farther offshore. These results suggest that larval sardine might use directed horizontal swimming behavior to remain in suitable habitat conditions. A large fraction of larvae were transported south into Mexican waters by late summer in all five scenarios. Surveying juvenile sardines in fall near the border of the U.S. and Mexico may be an efficient means of estimating recruitment because the advection pattern of eggs and larvae to the south is opposite the adult migration pattern to the north. Spatial and temporal variation in infection of South African sardine, Sardinops sagax , by a metacercarial parasite was examined to test the hypothesis that the South African sardine population comprises multiple stocks. Samples of adult S. sagax were collected monthly from four commercial fishery landing harbours off the west and south coast and three indices of infection (infection prevalence, mean infection intensity and mean parasite abundance) were determined for each sample. Generalized linear models (GLMs) were used to assess the relative importance of putative stock (sardine caught off the west coast were assumed to be from the putative “western” stock whereas those caught off the south coast were assumed to be from the putative “southern” stock), season, year, fish size and all possible two-way interactions, where a binomial distribution was assumed for prevalence and a negative binomial distribution assumed for infection intensity and parasite abundance. The most parsimonious model for each index was selected based on Akaike's Information Criterion, and significant GLMs were derived for all three indices. Putative stock was the most significant contributor to explaining deviance seen in infection intensity and parasite abundance, and was the second most important contributor to explaining deviance seen in infection prevalence, with fish from the putative western stock having significantly ( p < 0.001) higher parasite loads compared to those from the putative southern stock. Temporal variability was also observed, with season and year also contributing significantly to all three models. Despite this temporal variability, the marked spatial difference in the distribution of infection of S. sagax by metacercariae supports the hypothesis of western and southern stocks of sardine off the coast of South Africa. The presence of infected large sardine off the south coast indicates that these putative stocks are not discrete and that some degree of mixing occurs between them, at least from the western to the southern area. The poleward flowing East Australian Current (EAC) drives sporadic upwelling, entrains coastal water and forms the western Tasman Front (wTF), creating a mosaic of water types and larval transport routes along south eastern Australia. The spatial distribution, otolith chemistry and growth rates of larval sardine ( Sardinops sagax) were examined to infer spawning location and larval transport. A gradient of increasing larval size from north to south along the shelf was not detected but was evident between the shelf and offshore in the wTF. Here larvae were larger and older. Based on the occurrence of newly hatched larvae, spawning by S. sagax between southern Queensland and mid New South Wales (NSW) was more extensive than previously reported. The otolith chemistry from two wTF larval size classes differed, implying different origins. The otolith chemistry of wTF post-flexion larvae was similar to larvae from northern NSW, whereas wTF flexion larvae were similar to larvae observed nearby from mid-NSW. Two possible larval transport routes, direct and indirect, are inferred from otolith chemistry, current velocities and a previously published particle tracking study. Either larvae from northern NSW were advected south and entrained with younger larvae directly into the wTF, or larvae from a range of shelf regions were advected around the southern edge of an anticyclonic eddy, to join younger larvae directly entrained into the wTF. Trophodynamic similarities of three sympatric clupeoid species throughout their life histories in the Kii Channel as revealed by stable isotope approach. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 71: .Trophic similarity/difference among multispecies pelagic fish is a focal point in understanding the processes of climate impacts on their population dynamics. We tested trophic overlap of Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus, Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus, and Pacific round herring Etrumeus teres in the Kii Channel, Japan, by comparing the carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios among these clupeoid species from the larval to adult stages throughout the year. Space and time were both significant factors of variations of the isotopic composition values for the three species, and fish size was also significant for sardine and round herring. The isotopic composition values of the three species were homogeneous when compared with those of plankton and some other non-clupeoid species. Moreover, the isotopic composition values of the three clupeoid species collected simultaneously showed closer similarities than those in different areas and dates in all life stages. Thus, spatial and temporal differences in food availability were more apparent compared with interspecific differences in prey items specific to each species. Our analysis indicated strong trophic overlaps throughout the life histories among the three clupeoid species. Growth rates of round herring Etrumeus teres, Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus, and Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus larvae respond differently to seasonal temperature variations in Sagami Bay on the Pacific coast of central Japan. Larvae of these three clupeoid species were collected from small seine net catches between February 2008 and April 2009. Correlations between otolith growth increment widths and ambient temperatures were examined at five body sizes and indexed to otolith radii of 50-175 μm, which corresponded to notochord lengths of 15-24 mm. Round herring larvae showed positive correlations between growth rate and habitat temperature at all five body sizes. In contrast, Japanese sardine larvae did not show significant correlations between growth rate and ambient temperature at any of the five body sizes. Japanese anchovy larvae showed significant but weaker correlations between growth rate and temperature than round herring. Although these three species share habitats with some differences in seasonal occurrence in the bay, they showed different species-specific responses to seasonal habitat temperature variations. Abstract: We used the Ecopath with Ecosim software to develop a trophic mass-balance model of the eastern Great Australian Bight ecosystem, off southern Australia. Results provide an ecosystem perspective of Australia''s largest fishery, the South Australian sardine fishery, by placing its establishment and growth in the context of other dynamic changes in the ecosystem, including: the development of other fisheries; changing abundances of apex predator populations and oceanographic change. We investigated the potential impacts of the sardine fishery on high tropic level predators, particularly land-breeding seals and seabirds which may be suitable ecological performance indicators of ecosystem health. Results indicate that despite the rapid growth of the sardine fishery since 1991, there has likely been a negligible fishery impact on other modelled groups, suggesting that current levels of fishing effort are not impacting negatively on the broader ecosystem structure and function in the eastern Great Australian Bight. Results highlight the importance of small pelagic fish to higher trophic levels, the trophic changes that have resulted from loss and recovery of apex predator populations, and the potential pivotal role of cephalopod biomass in regulating ‘bottom-up’ trophic processes. The ability to resolve and attribute potential impacts from multiple fisheries, other human impacts and ecological change in this poorly understood region is highlighted by the study, and will be critical to ensure future ecologically sustainable development within the region. The case of the South African fishery for sardine and anchovy. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: 2075–2085.Worldwide, small shoaling pelagic fish manifest rapid and substantial natural changes in abundance. Is the application of a management procedure (MP), evaluated using simulation tests [i.e. a MP approach otherwise known as management strategy evaluation (MSE)], to recommend total allowable catches (TACs) with constraints desired by industry on the extent of interannual changes viable for such resources, particularly given the customarily lengthy MP evaluation process? This question is examined by considering the rapid boom and then bust situation that arose for the South African fishery for sardine (Sardinops sagax) and anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) across the turn of the century. Novel adaptations to the MP in place at the time of the boom allowed enhanced resource use during the boom period without compromising the risk of unintended depletion of the populations. Importantly a two-tier threshold system allowed the normal constraints on the maximum extent of interannual TAC reduction to be modified when TACs rose above the specified thresholds. The general protocol underlying the application of MPs for South African fisheries proved sufficiently flexible for the approach to continue to be applied, despite the unanticipated rapid fish population boom and then bust experienced. Abstract: Pacific sardines (Sardinops sagax) are commercially fished in Canada, USA, and Mexico along approximately 5000km of coastal waters that experience a wide range of temperatures. Trinational management of the species can be problematic because the connectivity between spawning, recruitment, stock residency, and migration in some years may not be well predicted. Oxygen isotopic value of otoliths (δ18Ootolith) has been used to infer stock residency and movement of fish populations within regions, but few studies have used laboratory data to establish a predictive temperature model to validate δ18Ootolith values of wild fish. We conducted a growth experiment with juveniles at different temperatures using Southern California Bight (SCB) seawater to test the assumption that Pacific sardine otoliths accurately record environmental water temperature in the presence of constant salinity. Sardine δ18Ootolith values were significantly and negatively correlated with temperature according to the linear model: We used this model to predict the temperature history of wild age-1 sardine collected in the SCB from 1995 to 2003. The field samples generally fit the model of SCB residency when both the average coastal sea surface temperatures and temperatures at 30m were used to bracket the range of calculated otolith temperatures. Abstract: The effects of freezing on the morphometrics of sardine Sardinops sagax were studied. Results were variable depending on the length of the freezing period, but all fish showed significant (p <0.001) decreases in both caudal length and wet body weight compared to initial measurements taken from unfrozen fish. The absolute weight loss of sardine ranged between 0.256 and 0.868g, which corresponded to a relative weight loss between 0.86 and 2.49%. The absolute loss in caudal length ranged between 0.281 and 0.458cm, whereas the relative loss in caudal length ranged between 1.57 and 2.54%. The effect of freezing duration on morphometric measurements was variable, and whereas shrinkage was most common, no effect was observed in a number of cases. Most of the morphometric measurements showed small changes and, if they decreased, the decrease was gradual. Only one morphometric measurement (LM 12, the distance between the snout and the top of the head) showed a significant increase in half of the eight freezing periods. Pelagic eggs of marine fish were collected weekly from shelf waters at Park Rynie on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast from 1987 to 2007 to investigate seasonal and annual patterns in the abundance of sardine Sardinops sagax eggs. After a sudden appearance in June each year, sardine eggs were found persistently throughout the winter-spring period before disappearing in early summer. From changes in the cross-shelf distribution of eggs, it is inferred that sardine shoals are close inshore in June, as they arrive in KwaZulu-Natal waters from the south, then the shoals disperse offshore and thereafter return inshore before their return migration southward in early summer. The article presents a study which evaluates the diel behavior in schools of sardinops sagax (Pacific sardine) and northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) in the Oregon coast and in Monterey Bay, California along the California Current System. It notes that fish schools in the Oregon coast follows antipredator behavior which disperses at night and forms distinct schools at day while in Monterey Bay fish schools of sardines are noted during night and day and its peak before sunrise. It states that the two regions have different environment wherein zooplanktons are more abundant in Monterey Bay than in Oregon coast for it has shallower water columns. Moreover, it concludes that prey availability and water columns affect the efficiency of school formations.

Hydroacoustic surveys off the coast of South Africa over the early years of the 21st century indicated that both the sardine Sardinops sagax and anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus populations had simultaneously reached record abundances. The South African pelagic fishery is regulated using an Operational Management Procedure (OMP). The OMP in use at that time had been developed using data from the two populations prior to this rapid and substantial increase in abundances. This paper documents the revised assessments that were urgently required to provide a basis to update the OMP. These assessments resulted in a changed perception of the status and productivity of these populations. In particular, estimates of the stock-recruitment relationships and the extent of variation about them, which play a key role in evaluating risk when developing OMPs, altered substantially from estimates derived from earlier assessments. Has the fishery contributed to a major shift in the distribution of South African sardine? – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 65: 1676–1688.A major shift in the distribution of South African sardine (Sardinops sagax) has resulted in a significant spatial mismatch in fishing effort vs. fish abundance in recent years. The sardine fishery started on the west coast during the 1940s, and processing capacity there increased rapidly. This trend together with increases in annual landings continued up to the early 1960s, but then the fishery collapsed as a consequence of overfishing. The population then recovered steadily during the 1980s and 1990s, coincident with, but perhaps not entirely attributable to, the inception of conservative management practices, to support catches similar to pre-collapse levels. Since 2001, however, most of the sardine population has been situated on South Africa’s south coast, far from processing facilities. Fishing effort has increased concomitantly on that coast, particularly during the past three years, reflecting the continued decline in the abundance of sardine on the west coast. Three hypotheses explaining the change in the distribution of sardine have been proposed: (i) intensely localized (i.e. west coast) fishing pressure depleted that part (or functionally distinct unit) of the population; (ii) the shift was environmentally induced; and (iii) successful spawning and recruit survival on the south coast contributed disproportionately more towards the bulk of recruitment, and progeny spawned there now dominate the population and exhibit natal homing. Abstract: The Humboldt Current System (HCS) is dominated by two pelagic species; Peruvian anchovy or anchoveta (Engraulis ringens) and sardine (Sardinops sagax). Using data from 43 acoustic surveys conducted from 1983 through 2005 by the Peruvian Marine Institute (IMARPE), we examined the distribution of these two species relative to water masses. We tested the hypothesis that anchovy was found more frequently in upwelled cold coastal water (CCW) and mixed waters (MCW) than in other water types and that sardine was more associated with more offshore oceanic surface subtropical water (SSW). Surface temperature, salinity, latitude, season and distance to the coast data were used to define water masses. Results using generalized additive models (GAM), modelling sardine and anchovy presence–absence as a function of year, water body, bottom depth and latitude, showed that anchovy were primarily found in CCW and MCS, while sardine were more ubiquitous relative to water masses with some predilection for SSW. The biomass of small pelagic fish species off the coast of South Africa has been monitored since 1984 using hydro-acoustic survey techniques. These time-series of spawner biomass and recruitment estimates form the basis for management of both the South African sardine Sardinops sagax and anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus resources and are central to the setting of annual total allowable catch levels. However, these survey estimates have, for the most part, been treated as relative indices as there are several biases inherent in acoustic survey methodology that remain difficult to quantify. Advances in acoustic technology together with an improved understanding of the major sources of survey errors have enabled estimation of and correction for biases such as receiver saturation, acoustic signal attenuation and target strength. Incorporation of these corrections over the entire time-series has resulted in an improved accuracy of acoustic survey estimates and substantial changes to the biomass estimates of both species, without jeopardising the requirement that the time-series remains comparable throughout its duration. Furthermore, the resultant decrease in the level of uncertainty associated with these abundance estimates has rendered improved utilisation of these resources possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A near-infrared spectrometer equipped with surface interactance optical fiber probe (400-1100 nm) was used to determine the fat content in intact sardine Sardinops melanostictus which is considered one of the important fish species of world aquaculture as well as human food source. The fat contents were 2.64-25.52 % and fish weight ranges were between 45.23g and 133.76g. Partial least square regression was used to develop predictive equations for fat where two models (with and without multiplicative scatter correction known as MSC) showed relatively good performances with regression coefficients higher than 0.9 and errors below 1% on a fresh weight basis. This study assessed the stock-recruitment relationship (SRR) for the Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus in the North-western Pacific. Of the 20 SRR models investigated, the Akaike information criterion (AIC) was the minimum (AIC = 551.2) when the data were separated into two groups (A and B) and the log-normal distribution was applied as the error term. Group A was constructed with SRR data from 1976–1987 and 1992–2004. Group B consisted of data from 1988–1991. The AIC minimum model was R = 22.8 S × e ε for Group A, where R, S, and ε denote the recruitment of sardine (individual number of 0-year old fish), spawning stock biomass (SSB), and error term, respectively. This model indicated that recruitment was proportional to the SSB and that no density-dependent effect operated over the range of SSB investigated (51 000–11.3 million t). Recruitment was markedly higher (lower) when the sea surface temperature (SST) of the Kuroshio Extension area in February was low (high). The essential SRR can simply be expressed as R = 22.8 S × e ε with the level of recruitment deviating from the model to a greater or lesser degree depending on the environmental conditions. Three indexes of spatial aggregation are developed and used to examine the aggregation pattern of sardine ( Sardinops sagax) and anchovy ( Engraulis ringens) in the Peruvian Humboldt Current System, determined from 36 acoustic surveys conducted from 1983 through 2003 by the Peruvian Marine Institute (IMARPE). Each index assesses a different aspect of aggregation: the concentration, the percent occupancy of space and the clustering of high-fish abundance. Both time-series correlation and tree-based clustering-regression method, classification and regression trees (CART), were used to relate each of the indexes to environmental variables (season, temperature anomaly and year). Additionally, a measure of onshore–offshore distribution, the average distance from the coast, and abundance variables (the average acoustic backscatter per occupied sampling unit, and the acoustically estimated total abundance of sardine and anchovy from IMARPE) were related to environmental factors by using CART. We show that the 1983–2003 time series can be divided into three different periods: with shifts in 1992 and in 1997–98. Sardine and anchovy showed large differences in both abundance and aggregation among these periods. Although upwelling ecosystems support dramatic and sudden changes in environmental conditions, fish responses are sometimes smoother than usually suggested and there are transition periods with concomitant high biomasses of anchovy and sardine, but with different spatial aggregation patterns. Observed relationships between environmental proxies and aggregation patterns support the habitat-based hypothesis that environmentally mediated alterations in range lead to population changes. Several published models exist for simulating vertical profiles of pelagic fish eggs, but no one has rigorously assessed their capacity to explain observed variability. In this study, we applied a steady-state model, with four different formulations for vertical diffusivity, to northern anchovy ( Engraulis mordax) and Pacific sardine ( Sardinops sagax) eggs in the California Current region. Vertical mixing profiles, based on wind speed and hydrography, were combined with estimated terminal ascent velocities of the eggs based on measurements of egg buoyancy and size, to simulate the vertical profiles of the eggs. We evaluated model performance with two data sets: (1) vertically stratified tows for both species and (2) paired samples for sardine eggs from 3-m depth and in vertically integrated tows. We used two criteria: whether the model predicted individual observed vertical profiles (1) as well as the observed mean and (2) better than the observed mean. Model predictions made with the formulation producing the most gradual profile of vertical diffusivity provided the best match to observations from both data sets and for both species. Addition of a random error term to the terminal ascent velocity further improved prediction for anchovy eggs, but not sardine. For the paired data, model prediction of integrated abundance from abundance at 3-m depth had significantly lower mean square error than prediction based on a linear regression of 3 m on integrated abundance. Important environmental processes for the survival and recruitment of early life stages of pelagic fishes have been synthesized through Bakun's fundamental triad as enrichment, concentration and retention processes (A. Bakun, 1996, Patterns in the Ocean. Ocean Processes and Marine Population Dynamics. San Diego, CA, USA: University of California Sea Grant). This conceptual framework states that from favourable spawning habitats, eggs and larvae would be transported to and/or retained in places where food originating from enrichment areas would be concentrated. We propose a method for quantifying two of the triad processes, enrichment and retention, based on the Lagrangian tracking of particles transported within water velocity fields generated by a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model. We apply this method to the southern Benguela upwelling ecosystem, constructing putative maps of enrichment and retention. We comment on these maps regarding main features of the circulation in the region, and investigate seasonal variability of the processes. We finally discuss the results in relation to available knowledge on the reproductive strategies of two pelagic clupeoid species abundant in the southern Benguela, anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardinops sagax). Abstract: A particle-tracking individual-based model (IBM) coupled with a 3-D hydrodynamic model was used to investigate how spatial variability in spawning and nursery grounds may influence transport and retention of sardine (Sardinops sagax) eggs and larvae in the southern Benguela ecosystem. A temperature-dependent Bělehrádek development model based on laboratory growth data was used to determine the duration of one egg and two larval stages. Successful transport/retention depended on each particle''s stage of development rather than its age. Results show that recruitment could occur in two distinct nursery areas on the west and south coasts of South Africa. Three viable recruitment ‘systems’ were identified: two are retention-based (spawned and retained on the west coast (WC–WC) or the south coast (SC–SC)) and one is transport-based (spawned on the south coast and transported to the west coast (SC–WC)). In the WC–WC system, the vertical distribution of eggs influenced retention; at intermediate depths of spawning (25–50 m) eggs avoided both offshore Ekman drift and deep cold water. In the SC–SC system, the area of spawning was important; >50% of eggs from the eastern Agulhas Bank (EAB) were retained in the south coast nursery grounds, whereas very few eggs were transported there from west of Cape Agulhas. In the SC–WC system, area of spawning was also important; 40% of the eggs spawned on the western Agulhas Bank (WAB) were transported to the west coast nursery ground. Sardine life history strategy could be divided between two main systems: the west coast system (spawning on the WAB and WC, and recruiting to the WC) and the Agulhas Bank system (spawning on the central and eastern Agulhas Bank, and recruiting to the SC). The spatial pattern of sardine spawning as revealed by the presence of sardine eggs is examined in relation to sea surface temperature (SST) and mean volume backscatter strength (MVBS) measured by a 150 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) during four spring surveys off central and southern California in 1996–99. Studies in other regions have shown that MVBS provides an excellent measure of zooplankton distribution and density. Zooplankton biomass as measured by survey net tows correlates well with concurrently measured MVBS. The high along-track resolution of egg counts provided by the Continuous Underway Fish Egg Sampler (CUFES) is a good match to the ADCP-based data. Large interannual differences in the pattern and density of sardine eggs are clearly related to the concurrently observed patterns of surface temperature and MVBS. The strong spatial relationship between sardine eggs and MVBS is particularly evident because of the large contrast in zooplankton biomass between the 1998 El Niño and 1999 La Niña. The inshore distribution of sardine spawning appears to be limited by the low temperatures of freshly upwelled waters, although the value of the limiting temperature varies between years. Often there is an abrupt offshore decrease in MVBS that is coincident with the offshore boundary of sardine eggs. Possible reasons for this association of sardine eggs and high zooplankton biomass include an evolved strategy that promotes improved opportunity of an adequate food supply for subsequent larval development, and/or adult nutrient requirements for serial spawning. Changes in the growth of the Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus during a period of declining stock size was examined by using sardines sampled from 1990 to 1996 in Tosa Bay, south-western Japan, one of the main spawning grounds on the Pacific coast of Japan during February and March. The growth parameter k -values of the von Bertalanffy growth equation of female sardines were small in the 1987–1990 years classes, while the values for the 1991–1992 years classes were larger, which corresponded closely with the decrease in catch of the sardines in south-western Japan, suggesting that there are density-dependent effects on the growth of sardines in Tosa Bay. In contrast, the body length decreased since the 1993 years class, but the fatness of female sardines improved after 1993. Since 1994, many I year females with transparent eggs in the ovaries have been collected from Tosa Bay. It is speculated that good nutritional conditions of the 1993 year class led to maturation at an earlier age, and that the decrease of growth from the 1993 year class occurred due to the reduction of resources channeled to growth as a result of the maturation at I year. Abstract In the present study, a modelling experiment is conducted to simulate the transport of sardine (Sardinops sagax ) eggs and larvae in the Northern Benguela. Based on historical and newly obtained data, different scenarios of vertical and horizontal distribution are applied and the effects on retention are discussed. The simulations showed that vertical and horizontal distribution were important for retention of sardine larvae in the Northern Benguela. By using age-dependent data on vertical distribution, it was shown that retention of particles in the simulation was substantially enhanced compared with a scenario where particles were distributed in the offshore moving Ekman layer. Retention was lowest during October–December (when upwelling intensity is high) and highest during February–April (when upwelling intensity is somewhat lower). When different spawning areas were considered, highest retention was observed in an area near Walvis Bay. It is concluded that the behaviour of sardine larvae is adapted to the circulation system in the Northern Benguela in a way that promotes retention of the larvae in inshore nursery areas. Abstract We constructed a numerical model reproducing the transport, survival and individual growth of the early life stages of Japanese sardine, Sardinops melanostictus , off the Pacific coast of Japan during 1978–93. The causes of early life stage mortality, including the influence of the effects of the spatial relationship between the spawning grounds and the Kuroshio on the mortality rate, were investigated. Survival and transport from egg stage to 60 days after spawning were modelled daily in a 1 × 1 degree mesh cell and individual growth in the period was modelled in each region (Kuroshio, Inshore, Offshore and Transition regions). Individual growth and survival from 60 to 180 days after spawning were modelled daily in the Transition region. Environmental data were taken from outside the model system. Our simulation indicates that survival variability in the larval stage (5–25 mm in standard length) is the key factor in determining the year-class strength. The simulation revealed that strong year classes occurred with good survival in the spawning ground and whilst entrained in the Kuroshio current being transported to the main feeding grounds in the Transition region. The simulation also indicated that survival rates in 1988–93 were low in the Inshore, Kuroshio and Offshore regions, which depressed the year-class strength during that period. South Australia is the centre of the Australian distribution of Sardinops sagax, whereas southern Queensland is the northeastern edge of its local range. In South Australia, eggs were collected during all months and the peak in abundance coincided with the upwelling period in summer–autumn (January–April). In contrast, eggs were collected from southern Queensland only during winter–spring (August–November), when water temperatures fell below 23 °C. In South Australia, eggs were found throughout shelf waters, whereas in southern Queensland most eggs were collected from a small area between Noosa Heads and Caloundra. The South Australian fishery was confined mainly to the waters of southern Spencer Gulf and the Coffin Bay Peninsula, and the Queensland fishery was centred on the area of high egg density. Catch rates in the South Australian fishery were high throughout the year, whereas low catch rates were recorded in southern Queensland outside the spawning season. In South Australia, 50% of males and females were mature at approximately 146 and 150 mm FL, respectively. Over 70% of fish in all size classes collected from southern Queensland were sexually mature. Fish less than 145 mm FL comprised over 30% of South Australian catch, but less than 3% of fish taken from southern Queensland. Evidence is consistent with the hypothesis that S. sagax is a widely distributed resident of South Australian waters, but only migrates into southern Queensland during winter–spring to spawn. The purpose of this study was to clarify the seasonal variation of fatty acid composition and free amino acid content in the Japanese sardine (Sardinops melanostictus) from the sea of Hyuga-Nada, and the relationship between the fatty acid composition of this sardine and that of plankton in the area. The lipid content of sardines at the sea of Hyuga-Nada was low in February (1.8%) and high (7.2%) from July to September. The major fatty acids in the total lipids from sardine were myristic acid (14:0), palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0), palmitoleic acid (16:1 n-7), oleic acid (18:1 n-9), eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5 n-3), and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6 n-3). The characteristics of the fatty acids isolated from sardines in July were similar to those from plankton in the same season. This reflects the deposition of plankton fatty acids in sardine depot fat. The season of high free histidine content in the ordinary meat corresponded with that of high lipid content. These results suggested that both the fatty acid composition of sardines and the high concentrations of certain amino acids in free form are influenced by the intake and seasonal variation of composition of plankton. This paper estimates and compares the effects of the mass mortalities of Sardinops sagax that occurred in South Australian waters in 1995 and 1998. After the 1995 event, the spawning biomass of S. sagax in South Australian waters fell by over 75% from approximately 165 000 tonnes to approximately 37 000 tonnes. No juvenile mortality was observed during 1995 and the population recovered quickly, with spawning biomass reaching 147 000 (70 000 to 234 000, 95%CI) tonnes in 1998. After the mass mortality event in October–November, spawning biomass fell by over 70% to 36 000 (19 000 to 67 000, 95%CI) tonnes; significant numbers of juveniles were also killed. The mortality of juveniles in 1998 and the recent increase in the abundance of Engraulis australis suggest that the population may recover more slowly from the 1998 mortality event than did after 1995. The initiation of the two largest mono-specific mass mortalities of fish ever recorded in South Australian waters within a period of less than four years suggests that the timing and location of the events was non-random. Both events occurred since 1993–1994, when large-scale tuna farming began in South Australia, and less than 250 km from Port Lincoln, where large quantities of untreated imported frozen S. sagax are fed to caged tuna. The introduction of untreated imported frozen fish products into the marine environment may be one of the mechanisms that has facilitated the range shifts of pathogens that have been associated with the increased frequency of mass mortalities due to disease in the ocean. Relations between the long-term variations in numbers of Japanese sardine and in ocean/climate were studied. We examined long-term records of the spring air temperature on the north-western coast of North America (ATNA; 40–50°N, 130–110°W) reconstructed from tree rings, and the sardine catch records inferred from documents dating from 1600 to 1990. High sardine catches occurred eight times in this period, and each high catch continued for 7–45 years. We found a significant difference in mean ATNAs between the abundant and poor catch periods: high (low) catch occurred in periods of high (low) ATNA. ATNA was negatively correlated with spring sea-surface temperature east of Japan (SSTJ; 36–40°N, 150–160°E), where the sardine possibly migrate north-eastward, a relation which was confirmed from 1940 to 1990. In years when the Aleutian Low Pressure System (AL) shifted south-east and intensified, the westerly wind was strong east of Japan along the south-western edge of the AL, resulting in low SSTJ; a warm south-westerly wind blows in the west coast of North America along the south-eastern edge of the AL. If we assume that this relation between ATNA and SSTJ can be extended back to the 1600s, high (low) catches occur in the period when SSTJ is low (high). This relation between sardine catch and SSTJ is consistent with previous studies based on data from after 1900. The monitoring of marine species as sentinels for ecosystem health has long been a valuable tool worldwide, providing insight into how both anthropogenic pollution and naturally occurring phenomena (i.e., harmful algal blooms) may lead to human and animal dietary concerns. The marine environments contain many contaminants of anthropogenic origin that have sufficient similarities to steroid and thyroid hormones, to potentially disrupt normal endocrine physiology in humans, fish, and other animals. An appropriate understanding of the effects of these endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on forage fish (e.g., sardine, anchovy, mackerel) can lead to significant insight into how these contaminants may affect local ecosystems in addition to their potential impacts on human health. With advancements in molecular tools (e.g., high-throughput sequencing, HTS), a genomics approach offers a robust toolkit to discover putative genetic biomarkers in fish exposed to these chemicals. However, the lack of available sequence information for non-model species has limited the development of these genomic toolkits. Using HTS and de novo assembly technology, the present study aimed to establish, for the first time for Sardinops sagax (Pacific sardine), Scomber japonicas (Pacific chub mackerel) and Pleuronichthys verticalis (hornyhead turbot), a de novo global transcriptome database of the liver, the primary organ involved in detoxification. The assembled transcriptomes provide a foundation for further downstream validation, comparative genomic analysis and biomarker development for future applications in ecotoxicogenomic studies, as well as environmental evaluation (e.g., climate change) and public health safety (e.g., dietary screening). Generally the main component of fishy flavor is considered to be trimethylamine. On the other hand, carbonyl compounds, produced from oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acid by lipoxygenase or by autoxidation, might have some contribution to the fishy flavor. Since sardine skin contains high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids and lipoxygenase, carbonyl compounds may be generated more easily than trimethylamine. In this study, volatile flavor compounds of sardine were analyzed by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry and gas chromatograph-olfactometry combined with solid phase microextraction. Then, the flavor components that contribute to fishy flavor were identified. At normal pH (6.2), trimethylamine was not detected or sensed from the fresh sardines. When the pH was raised, the amount of trimethylamine became higher. Trimethylamine flavor was weak at pH 9 and strongly sensed at pH 11 or higher. On the other hand, 33 other compounds were positively or tentatively identified, including 8 hydrocarbons, 5 ketones, 1 furan, 1 sulfur compound, 12 aldehydes, and 6 alcohols in fresh sardines. Among them, 2,3-pentanedione, hexanal, and 1-penten-3-ol were the main components. Forty-seven flavors were detected by gas chromatograph-olfactometry. Among them, paint-like (1-penten-3-one), caramel-like (2,3-pentanedione), green-like (hexanal), shore-like ((Z)-4-heptenal), citrus note (octanal), mushroom-like (1-octen-3-one), potato-like (methional), insect-like ((E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal), and bloody note (not identified) were strongly sensed. From the aforementioned results, it can be concluded that these compounds rather than trimethylamine contributed to fresh sardine flavor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
