Abstract

The article presents a study which evaluates the diel behavior in schools of sardinops sagax (Pacific sardine) and northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) in the Oregon coast and in Monterey Bay, California along the California Current System. It notes that fish schools in the Oregon coast follows antipredator behavior which disperses at night and forms distinct schools at day while in Monterey Bay fish schools of sardines are noted during night and day and its peak before sunrise. It states that the two regions have different environment wherein zooplanktons are more abundant in Monterey Bay than in Oregon coast for it has shallower water columns. Moreover, it concludes that prey availability and water columns affect the efficiency of school formations.
