Rural tourism has attracted increasing attention in recent decades. It responds to new market demands, some of which driven by a nostalgic quest for a 'rural idyll', as well as the need of many European rural territories to find new sources of income and development. Local products represent a relevant asset for appealing to rural tourist experiences, enhancing local identity and regional economies. Based on a study of the rural tourist experience as lived by visitors of a Portuguese schist village, the present paper analyses the role of nostalgia and sensory experiences in leading to tourists' purchase of local products, using a conditional process analysis. Results confirm this link and also show that tourists seem to be more affected by these dynamics than excursionists. Implications of results for management and development of rural territories involving tourism and sales of local products are further discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Providing new production alternatives in the development of the economy in rural areas of Turkey is of particular importance. Geographical indication (GI) labelling differentiates a product from its competitors as to the region where it originated. The improvement of GI labelling production strengthens the efforts of the rural regions in maintaining high standards of the product quality regarding to the health. This paper investigates the way GI is implemented by pestil (dried fruit pulp) producers in Gumushane province in Turkey. A framework formulated is urgently needed to allow the pestil producers to promote their local product to a wider market.

This paper analyses the relationship between food system dynamics with consumer behaviors, in population within a protected mountain area in Italy. In order to obtain socioeconomic and nutritional data, a combination of qualitative and quantitative research was employed to group farmers, local authorities, and inhabitants. Our research highlighted the close relationship between local food productive sector with consumption habits of local communities. The experience of the Majella National Park can be taken as an example of promoting environmentally friendly agriculture that enhances food quality, increases resource management and preserves local cultural heritage.

The aim of this paper is to construct a reflection in relation to the processes of enhancement of local products in contemporary societies. We present data from studies conducted in different rural areas and in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul State - located in southern Brazil – in order to discuss the referred theme with the pertinent international literature. Given a context in which is possible to notice a significant urban anxiety in relation to food and an intense material and symbolic mobility between the countryside and city, we observe, through the analysis of the interviews carried out with urban consumers, a positively valued idea of rural even as an idealized one. But if it is possible to observe the enhancement of the processes of local products associated with idealized imagesof the countryside, it is also significant to understand other kinds of motivations, associated with the idea of healthy eating habits, linked to political commitments or also related to appeals that seek to strengthen the identity and cultural traditions. In the analysis of the consumption of local products there are elements that allow the understanding of the dynamics of rural development. For this reason, "from consumption to production" and hence the interest in "crossing views"

RURAL tourism ,RURAL development ,TOURISM impact ,SUSTAINABLE development ,REGRESSION analysis - Abstract
Rural tourism is frequently considered a development tool for rural areas. In particular, demand for local products may stimulate local economy and is simultaneously an important part of the tourist experience. Little is known, however, of the role of local product purchase within and as a result of the rural tourist experience. The present article addresses this gap by analysing the impact of the tourist experience on (a) the decision to purchase local products and (b) the amount of respective expenditures made, based on survey data on rural tourists in Portugal. Results reveal a positive impact of the knowledge, sensorial and interaction dimensions of the tourist experience in both models, and length of stay, age, place attachment and nationality also play a role. Agriculture is an essential component of sustainable food tourism and there are numerous benefits to a broad range of stakeholders that can be derived from enhancing and sustaining agriculture-tourism linkages in this context. The potential to contribute to rural development and sustainable livelihoods, support for the agricultural and artisan food sectors and reduced economic leakage in the tourism sector are just a few of the potential positive outcomes. Tourists also benefit through the opportunity to experience authentic local culture and heritage, and engage in a meaningful way with local producers and suppliers. Agrotourism differs from food tourism in that agrotourism is inherently rural, while food tourism is predominantly urban, but can be rural as well. The paper shows the role of farmers' markets and farm visits like parts of sustainable tourism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The scientific examination of short food supply chains is justified by consumer interest and their role in the European Unions&rsquo, subsidy policy and rural development. In our current article, we present the results of a consumer survey of more than a thousand people from Hungary. It was conducted in the North Hungarian (rural) region. Our research goals were: (1) To access consumer demand for short food supply chains and to determine the characteristics of consumers who prefer local foods, and (2) to examine the role of short food supply chains in rural development by a territorial comparison. The results showed that consumers&rsquo, willingness to pay a theoretical premium for local products was high (averagely +20.7%). Compared to that, we considered their monthly purchased quantity low. We found a statistically valid, yet weak, correlation that on a monthly basis, the purchase of local products was more significant for consumers from smaller settlements and villages than those from (greater) cities. Furthermore, there were factors in some consumers&rsquo, preferences that indicated a greater interest for small producers&rsquo, goods. Although it was not possible to assess the absolute demand of the studied rural area, these results (at a certain level) confirm the potential of short food chains in rural development.

The current research paper takes a look at back-yard gardening practices within the Serbian- Hungarian border region with the intention to evaluate the role of the inner settlement gardens in rural development through promoting self-sufficiency and potential commercialization. The project aims to explore possibilities for promoting spin farming as a tool for development in rural communities by exploiting unused capacities, encouraging local and household self-sufficiency, generating supplemental income and popularizing traditional, hand-crafted, local and bio-products. Results of the survey conducted in the area are presented along with possible future actions utilizing information obtained during the project.

International audience; In an earlier paper, we interpreted the resolution of the 2005 WTO dispute on GIs as a stalemate and suggested a shift of the balance of power in favor of the pro-GI coalition. Since then, international negotiations continue to be stalled. The record of GIs as a tool for the promotion of rural development shows that few non-European GIs have been registered. The case of Morocco illustrates the difficulties faced by a government eager to use GIs as a development instrument. International recognition of GIs is difficult. The TTIP might not resolve institutional and doctrinal GI problems.
