Objective: Recent studies have shown that microRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) play key roles in adipogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the role and underlying mechanism of miR-182 in adipogenesis.Methods: This study used the 3T3-L1 cell line and human visceral adipose tissue (VAT)-derived adipocytes to determine the role of miR-182 in adipogenesis. Adipose tissues from mice with high-fat diet-induced obesity, ob/ob mice, or human individuals with obesity were used to determine the association of miR-182 levels with obesity. A luciferase reporter assay was used to determine the target of miR-182.Results: The expression level of miR-182 was greatly downregulated during white adipogenesis and markedly lower in the VAT of mice and humans with obesity. Ectopic expression of miR-182 in 3T3-L1 cells and human adipocytes suppressed the formation of lipid droplets and the expression of adipogenic genes. The luciferase reporter assay showed that miR-182 targeted the 3'-untranslated sequence of CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α (C/EBPα) directly. In addition, glucocorticoids negatively regulated miR-182 expression, which, in turn, suppressed the glucocorticoid-induced expression of C/EBPα.Conclusions: Taken together, our studies identified miR-182 as a novel negative regulator of adipogenesis and a potential therapeutic target for obesity. Background: Endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES) is the standard treatment for common bile duct stones. The reported findings regarding complications, such as biliary pancreatitis and cholangitis, differ between cholecystectomy after ES. The purpose of this study is to compare cholecystectomy outcomes after endoscopic treatment of common bile duct stones whether or not the incidence of recurrent pancreatitis and cholangitis is reduced, especially in high-risk patients.Methods: We analyzed 8 studies, including 7 randomized controlled trials retrieved from the PubMed (1990-2019), Embase (1990-2019), and Cochrane (1990-2019) databases for trials comparing the two strategies for treatment of gallstones after ES. A related study on gallbladder removal after ES was acquired, followed by analysis of each group using RevMan. Risk ratios (RRs) were calculated for categorical variables and differences in means were calculated for continuous variables.Results: We retrieved a total of 8 studies, including seven randomized controlled trials and one retrospective study. A total of 12,717 patients were included in the study (4922 in the early cholecystectomy group and 7795 in the gallbladder in situ group). During the follow-up period, 41 patients had pancreatitis after ES in the cholecystectomy group and 177 patients in the wait-and-see group. The incidence of pancreatitis in the cholecystectomy group was significantly reduced (RR, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.27-0.53; P < 0.00001; I2 = 0%). The incidence of cholangitis and jaundice in the cholecystectomy group was also less than the preserved gallbladder group (RR, 0.31; 95% CI, 0.26-0.38; P < 0.00001; I2 = 0%). There was no significant difference in mortality between the two groups (RR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.52-1.02; P = 0.07; I2 = 14%). There was a significant difference in cholecystitis and biliary colic (RR, 0.28; 95% CI, 0.24-0.32; P < 0.00001; I2 = 17%).Conclusion: Early cholecystectomy after removal of common bile duct stones can effectively reduce biliary complications. This is still true for high-risk patients and has no significant effect on the mortality of patients. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is recommended after ES. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Study Question: Is the vanishing of a co-twin after or before the ultrasonic registration of cardiac activity at approximately 6-8 weeks of gestation associated with adverse perinatal outcomes?Summary Answer: The timing of the demise of a co-twin after the registration of cardiac activity is an independent risk factor for adverse perinatal outcomes.What Is Known Already: A significant body of evidence has confirmed that vanishing twin (VT) pregnancies are associated with higher levels of risk for preterm birth (PTB), low birthweight (LBW), small-for-gestational age (SGA) and perinatal mortality, compared with singleton pregnancy. However, the impact of co-twin vanishing, before or after the presence, of cardiac activity, on perinatal outcomes has yet to be extensively investigated.Study Design, Size, Duration: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 38 876 singletons delivered from ART cycles between 2006 and 2018, at the Peking University Third Hospital.Participants/materials, Setting, Methods: In total, 35 188 singletons were delivered from the singleton pregnancy group, 2256 singletons from the VT pregnancy group after that cardiac activity was noted, and 1432 singletons were delivered from the VT pregnancy group before cardiac activity could be registered. Using the Poisson model, the adjusted risk ratio (aRR) was used to estimate the incidence of PTB, LBW, SGA and perinatal mortality, in the pregnancies of two types of VT compared with singleton pregnancies after correction for potential confounding factors.Main Results and the Role Of Chance: The vanishing of a co-twin after the registration of cardiac activity was associated with an increased risk of perinatal mortality when compared with the group of singleton pregnancies (0.5% vs 0.2%; P = 0.006); this association still existed after adjustment for potential confounders (aRR 2.19, 95% CI 1.12-4.30; P = 0.023). Furthermore, it was significantly associated with a higher risk of PTB (all cycles aRR 2.00, 95% CI 1.77-2.24; P < 0.001; fresh transfer aRR 2.06, 95% CI 1.78-2.38; P < 0.001; frozen transfer aRR 1.87, 95% CI 1.52-2.28; P < 0.001), LBW (all cycles aRR 2.47, 95% CI 2.12-2.88; P < 0.001; fresh transfer aRR 2.50, 95% CI 2.07-3.02; P < 0.001; frozen transfer aRR 2.39; 95% CI 1.83-3.12; P < 0.001) and SGA (all cycles aRR 1.56, 95% CI 1.35-1.80; P < 0.001; fresh transfer aRR 1.53, 95% CI 1.29-1.81; P < 0.001; frozen transfer aRR 1.62, 95% CI 1.24-2.11; P < 0.001). However, prior to the presence of cardiac activity, the vanishing of a co-twin was not associated with a higher risk of perinatal mortality (all cycles aRR 0.71, 95% CI 0.17-2.92; P = 0.636; fresh cycles aRR 0.51, 95% CI 0.07-3.70; P = 0.502; frozen cycles aRR 1.29, 95% CI 0.17-9.66; P = 0.803), PTB (all cycles aRR 1.11, 95% CI 0.91-1.34; P = 0.301; fresh cycles aRR 1.10, 95% CI 0.87-1.39; P = 0.447; frozen cycles aRR 1.13, 95% CI 0.81-1.58; P = 0.467), LBW (all cycles aRR 1.19, 95% CI 0.91-1.55; P = 0.207; fresh cycles aRR 1.08, 95% CI 0.77-1.51; P = 0.668; frozen cycles aRR 1.45, 95% CI 0.93-2.25; P = 0.100) and SGA (all cycles aRR 1.09, 95% CI 0.89-1.35; P = 0.405; fresh cycles aRR 0.97, 95% CI 0.75-1.26; P = 0.839). Pregnancies involving the two types of VT were significantly different in terms of PTB (all cycles aRR 1.80, 95% CI 1.45-2.24; P < 0.001; fresh cycles aRR 1.88, 95% CI 1.44-2.45; P < 0.001; frozen cycles aRR 1.65, 95% CI 1.13-2.40; P = 0.009), LBW (all cycles aRR 2.08, 95% CI 1.55-2.79; P < 0.001; fresh cycles aRR 2.32, 95% CI 1.61-3.36; P < 0.001; frozen cycles aRR 1.65, 95% CI 1.01-2.70; P = 0.046) and SGA (all cycles aRR 1.70, 95% CI 1.36-2.11; P < 0.001; fresh cycles aRR 1.87, 95% CI 1.42-2.45; P < 0.001).Limitations, Reasons For Caution: The present data are not able to differentiate between co-twin demise occurring in the first or second trimester. Because the second trimester ultrasound scan is not an integral aspect of IVF assessment, this information was not available in the database.Wider Implications Of the Findings: Adverse perinatal outcomes in ART babies can be avoided by replacing one embryo at a time. Background and Purpose: Despite recent advances in understanding its pathophysiology, treatment of acute kidney injury (AKI) remains a major unmet medical need, and novel therapeutic strategies are needed. Cathelicidin-related antimicrobial peptide (CRAMP) with immunomodulatory properties has an emerging role in various disease contexts. Here, we aimed to investigate the role of CRAMP and its underlying mechanisms in AKI.Experimental Approach: The human homologue LL-37 and CRAMP were measured in blood samples of AKI patients and in experimental AKI mice respectively. Experimental AKI was induced in wild-type and CRAMP-deficient (Cnlp-/- ) mice by ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R). Therapeutic evaluation of CRAMP was performed with exogenous CRAMP (5 mg·kg-1 , i.p.) treatment.Key Results: Cathelicidin expression was inversely related to clinical signs in patients and down-regulated in renal I/R-induced injury in mice. Cnlp-/- mice exhibited exacerbated I/R-induced renal dysfunction, aggravated inflammatory responses and apoptosis. Moreover, over-activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in Cnlp-/- mice was associated with I/R-induced renal injury. Exogenous CRAMP treatment markedly attenuated I/R-induced renal dysfunction, inflammatory response and apoptosis, correlated with modulation of immune cell infiltration and phenotype. Consistent with Cnlp-/- mouse data, CRAMP administration suppressed renal I/R-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation, and its renal protective effects were mimicked by a specific NLRP3 inhibitor CY-09. The reno-protective and NLRP3 inhibitory effects of CRAMP required the EGF receptor.Conclusion and Implications: Our results suggest that CRAMP acts as a novel immunomodulatory mediator of AKI and modulation of CRAMP may represent a potential therapeutic strategy. Objectives: To clarify the transmission mechanism of the blaCTX-M-64 gene between Escherichia coli and Salmonella isolates from food animals.Methods: A total of 329 E. coli and 60 Salmonella isolates collected from food animals in 2016 were screened for the presence of blaCTX-M-64 genes. The blaCTX-M-64-positive isolates were typed and plasmid and chromosome DNA was sequenced to determine the genetic context of blaCTX-M-64 and the plasmid types present.Results: The blaCTX-M-64 gene was identified in only three E. coli isolates but was the predominant gene in the Salmonella isolates (n = 9). These 12 CTX-M-64-positive isolates were all resistant to ampicillin, cefotaxime, ceftiofur, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime and florfenicol and 9 were resistant to ciprofloxacin. The blaCTX-M-64 gene was located on transferable IncI2 plasmids and an IncHI2 plasmid in three E. coli and one Salmonella isolate, respectively. The remaining eight Salmonella isolates contained blaCTX-M-64 integrated into the chromosome. Different genetic contexts of blaCTX-M-64 genes were found among the 12 isolates: ISEcp1-blaCTX-M-64-orf477-A/C on IncI2 plasmids of 3 E. coli isolates; ΔISEcp1-blaCTX-M-64-orf477-A/C in the chromosome of 1 Salmonella isolate; and ISEcp1-blaCTX-M-64-orf477 on the IncHI2 plasmid and chromosome of 8 Salmonella isolates.Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of chromosomally encoded CTX-M-64 in Salmonella isolates. ISEcp1-mediated transposition is likely to be responsible for the spread of blaCTX-M-64 between different plasmids and chromosomes in Enterobacteriaceae especially E. coli and Salmonella. In this paper, we explore themes that emerged while reading "How does one recognize contextual mitigating factors (CMFs) as a basis to understand and arrive at better approaches to research designs" (Gallard Martínez et al. this issue). Specifically, we consider the potential for the CMF analysis method to help researchers be more critical about how their ontological–epistemological–axiological (OEA) stance informs their tactical understandings about CMFs and how these understandings shape research questions and design. We discuss the value of autobiographical reflection for becoming aware of contextual constructs and situated phenomena and consider the importance of engaging in the practice of radical doubt to question unexamined assumptions in the research we produce and consume. In presenting this discussion of Gallard Martínez et al. (this issue), we raise questions about methodological affordances and limitations of the CMF approach and draw implications for individual and collective responsibility for both disseminating scholarship in channels that support scholars to attend to CMFs in their work and for rethinking what kinds of research we choose to consume and be informed by. Background: We aimed to obtain a set of health state utility scores of patients with esophageal cancer (EC) and precancerous lesions in China, and to explore the influencing factors of health‐related quality of life (HRQoL). Methods: A hospital‐based multicenter cross‐sectional study was conducted. From 2013 to 2014, patients with EC or precancerous lesions were enrolled. HRQoL was assessed using a European quality of life‐5 dimension (EQ‐5D‐3L) instrument. Multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to explore the influencing factors of the EQ‐5D utility scores. Results: A total of 2090 EC patients and 156 precancer patients were included in the study. The dimension of pain/discomfort had the highest rate of self‐reported problems, 60.5% in EC and 51.3% in precancer patients. The mean visual analog scale (VAS) score for EC and precancer patients were 68.4 ± 0.7 and 64.5 ± 3.1, respectively. The EQ‐5D utility scores for EC and precancer patients were estimated as 0.748 ± 0.009 and 0.852 ± 0.022, and the scores of EC at stage I, stage II, stage III, and stage IV were 0.693 ± 0.031, 0.747 ± 0.014, 0.762 ± 0.015, and 0.750 ± 0.023, respectively. According to the multivariable analyses, the factors of region, occupation, household income in 2012, health care insurance type, pathological type, type of therapy, and time points of the survey were statistically associated with the EQ‐5D utility scores of EC patients. Conclusions: There were remarkable decrements of utility scores among esophageal cancer patients, compared with precancer patients. The author believes that it is more important to provide all students in the U.S. in 2011 the opportunity to experience the excitement of scientific discovery than to celebrate the winner of the science fair. He notes U.S. President Barack Obama's emphasis on the importance of science education and science research competitions. He details the history of U.S. science fairs and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair but stresses the value of learning experience over competition.

This study determines the factors that exert important influences on the success of collaborative research and development (R&D) projects. The study uses data from a cross-European sample of collaborative R&D projects under EU Framework Programs, supported with relevant qualitative evidence from a series of case studies, and focuses on three levels of possible factors: market, firm, and project levels. The results indicate that partnering firm innovation experience, innovation protection mechanisms, effective management of rules and regulations, and the existence of commercially driven projects that open up new technological areas are the factors with the strongest significant effect on product and/or process innovation. Background and Purpose: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common acute abdominal condition, frequently associated with intestinal barrier dysfunction, which aggravates AP retroactively. Butyrate exhibits anti-inflammatory effects in a variety of inflammatory diseases. However, its potential beneficial effect on AP and the underlying mechanisms have not been investigated.Experimental Approach: Experimental AP was induced by caerulein hyperstimulation in wild-type and GPR109A-/- mice. Sodium butyrate was administered intragastrically for 7 days prior to caerulein hyperstimulation. Anti-inflammatory mechanisms of butyrate were further investigated in peritoneal macrophages.Key Results: Butyrate prophylaxis attenuated AP as shown by reduced serum amylase and lipase levels, pancreatic oedema, myeloperoxidase activity, and improved pancreatic morphology. Amelioration of pancreatic damage by butyrate was associated with reduced levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and CCL2 and suppressed activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in both pancreas and colon. Further, butyrate ameliorated pancreatic inflammation by suppressing interactions between histone deacetylase 1 (HDAC1) and AP1 and STAT1 with increased histone acetylation at H3K9, H3K14, H3K18, and H3K27 loci, resulting in suppression of NLRP3 inflammasome activation and modulation of immune cell infiltration in pancreas. Additionally, butyrate mediated STAT1/AP1-NLRP3 inflammasome suppression via HDAC1 inhibition was demonstrated in peritoneal macrophage. In colon, butyrate inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome activation via GPR109A. Accordingly, the modulatory effects of butyrate on AP, AP-associated gut dysfunction, and NLRP3 inflammasome activation were diminished in GPR109A-/- mice.Conclusion and Implications: Our study dissected tissue-specific anti-inflammatory mechanisms of butyrate during AP, suggesting that increased colonic levels of butyrate may be a strategy to protect against AP. Climate and climate change have always been a research focus of atmospheric sciences. This paper summaries research efforts, achievements and international contributions of the Chinese scientific community on climate and climate change over the past 70 years. The review is based on papers published officially in national or international scientific journals, and is organized to cover six aspects: (1) general climate studies; (2) impact of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau; (3) impact of the East Asian monsoon; (4) influences of teleconnection oscillation and westerlies; (5) climate dynamics and development of climate models; and (6) climate change. This article outlines findings from a case study investigating attitudes toward English as the dominant language of scientific research writing. Survey and interview data were collected from 55 Latin American health and life scientists and 7 North American scientific journal editors connected to an intensive scholarly writing for publication course. Study findings point to competing perceptions (scientists vs. editors) of fairness in the adjudication of Latin American scientists' research at international scientific journals. Adopting a critical, plurilingual lens, I argue that these findings demand a space for more equity-driven pedagogies, policies, and reflective practices aimed at supporting the robust participation of plurilingual scientists who use English as an additional language (EAL). In particular, if equity is indeed a shared goal, there is a clear need for commitment to ongoing critical self-reflection on the part of scientific journal gatekeepers and research writing support specialists. In the Big Data era, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), including the Internet and sensors, digitises physical activity extensively. This leads to the development of ICT Driven Innovation (IDI) which may have a strong influence on National Innovation Efficiency (NIE). The purpose of this paper is to provide insights into the impact of IDI on NIE in both advanced and emerging countries. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is employed to obtain the individual score for each country. We focus on comparing IDI between advanced and emerging economies in particular. We believe that IDI is an important reason why the average NIE score is higher in developed countries than in emerging countries. Obviously, developed countries have shown good capabilities in IDI in excess of most emerging countries. This includes but is not limited to R&D expenditure across the ICT industry, ICT patents etc. Several emerging economies received high NIE scores such as China and Brazil, who also have a good performance in IDI. On this basis, we discuss the mechanism of how IDI affects NIE. ICT industry innovation, non-ICT industries innovation, and ICT infrastructure are summarised as the primary factor affecting NIE by IDI. Further empirical research is required in the future. This article concerns the roles of entrepreneurial scientists in the co-production of life science research and regulation. Regulatory brokerage, defined as a mode of strategic planning and as the negotiation of regulation based on comparative advantage and competition, is expressed in scientific activities that take advantage of regulatory difference. This article is based on social science research in Japan, Thailand, India and the UK. Using five cases related to Japan's international activities in the field of regenerative medicine, I argue that, driven by competitive advantage, regulatory brokerage at lower levels of managerial organization and governance is emulated at higher levels. In addition, as regulatory brokerage affects the creation of regulation at national, bilateral and global levels, new regulation may be based on competition in regulatory advantage rather than on ethical and scientific values. I argue that regulatory brokerage as the basis for regulatory reform bypasses issues that need to be decided by a broader public. More space is needed for international and political debate about the socio-political consequences of the global diversity of regulation in the field of the life sciences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper outlines several general processes in Eastern European economies, which are seen as important elements of transformation of their systems of innovation and are evolving between the restructuring and erosion of potentially viable R&D and technology capacities. It is emphasized that the best way to restructure hyper-developed extramural R&D capacities in post-socialist economies is to integrate them into industrial enterprises. If Eastern Europe continues to grow, spin-offs are likely to improve the coherence of their national systems of innovation by creating links between research and production. Privatization alone, if not accompanied by restructuring support, will create new gaps in the knowledge base.

The article presents information on scientific research and development in the Soviet Union during the rule of Leonid Brezhnev, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Soviet Union. Comparing with the U.S., it has been found that the number of advanced researchers in engineering and natural sciences are more in Soviet Union. The threat of ideological interference in the research work was removed but at the cost of political and social liberty of the scientists. Brezhnev established the State Committee on Science and Technology in 1965 to plan the applied research. The committee was given the status equal to the Academy of Sciences, established by the previous government.

The article discusses the author's reports in developing the U.S. Antarctic Research Program. He states that the U.S. Antarctic Program pioneered management techniques in Big Science that worked and it demonstrated also that a partnership in this type of scientific exploration was feasible between the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Navy. He explains that the pattern of close cooperation was set by Laurence Gould and Admiral George Dufek in Operation Deep Freeze during the International Geophysical Year and the National Academy of Sciences managed the science and the Navy provided transportation, food, shelter and medical care for the scientists.

The relationship between performance and allocation of time to technical work, teaching, or administration was examined in this study involving 552 university, government, and industrial scientists and engineers for whom questionnaire and performance data were available. Respondents who spent full time on their technical work performed less well than did those who spent part time. Among nonsupervisory PhD's in both research and development labs, and among "assistant scientists" in PhD-dominated labs, about three-quarters time spent on technical work was optimal. Among nonsupervisory engineers in development labs, half time or less was optimal. Among those devoting part time to technical activities, nonsupervisory PhD's in research labs performed better if they did more administration than teaching. Iron deficiency remains the largest nutritional deficiency worldwide and the main cause of anaemia. Severe iron deficiency leads to anaemia known as iron deficiency anaemia (IDA), which affects a total of 1·24 billion people, the majority of whom are children and women from resource-poor countries. In sub-Saharan Africa, iron deficiency is frequently exacerbated by concomitant parasitic and bacterial infections and contributes to over 120 000 maternal deaths a year, while it irreparably limits the cognitive development of children and leads to poor outcomes in pregnancy.Currently available iron compounds are cheap and readily available, but constitute a non-physiological approach to providing iron that leads to significant side effects. Consequently, iron deficiency and IDA remain without an effective treatment, particularly in populations with high burden of infectious diseases. So far, despite considerable investment in the past 25 years in nutrition interventions with iron supplementation and fortification, we have been unable to significantly decrease the burden of this disease in resource-poor countries.If we are to eliminate this condition in the future, it is imperative to look beyond the strategies used until now and we should make an effort to combine community engagement and social science approaches to optimise supplementation and fortification programmes. The traditional method of cloning formation is used to study the radiation effect of nuclear physics rays on hepatoma cells, and the results obtained are not reliable. Therefore, a new method of studying the radiation effect of nuclear physics rays on hepatoma cells is proposed. PCC method is used to study the radiation effect ofγ-rays on hepatoma cells. Radiation effects of X-rays on hepatoma cells were studied by radionuclide formation assay, neutral comet electrophoresis and γH2AX focal detection. The results showed that the survival curves of HepG2 hepatoma cells irradiated byγ-rays were well fitted by linear squares. There was a linear relationship between the survival rate and irradiation dose of HepG2 hepatoma cells irradiated byγ-rays. HepG2 hepatoma cells showed strong tolerance to X-ray irradiation, and the positive rate of H2AX cells reached 100% in each dose group only 0.5 h after X-ray irradiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, Chinese scientists have achieved significant progress in paleontological discoveries and scientific studies. Series of studies published in top journals, such as Science, Nature and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), have astonished the world by presenting beautiful fossils that furnish robust evidence to enrich the understanding of organismic evolution, major extinctions and stratigraphy. It has been portrayed as the heyday in the paleontology of China. What is the status of the field? What factors have caused the avalanche of fossil discoveries in China? What implications can these new discoveries provide for our understanding of current evolution theories? How, given their significant contribution to the world's paleontology scholarship, can Chinese scientists play a due leadership role in the field? We report on a direct ultraviolet (UV) writing method for the fabrication of channel waveguides at 1.55 μm in LiNbO3 through UV irradiation of surface and buried planar waveguides made by annealed proton exchange and reverse proton exchange. This work describes the experience of Tomsk Polytechnic University in involving students in scientific research. The involvement is to be achieved by including scientific research elements into laboratory class programs, game-based learning, conducting laboratory classes in real-life scientific research facilities, including "Scientific research work for students" into Bachelor's curriculum (starting the second grade) and other actions. The experience described should be considered a success, as over the last decade the number of Bachelor's graduates at TPU willing to pursue the Master's degree (and then do postgraduate studies) has multiplied. Abstract: In this article, we critically examine what a commitment to equity, diversity, and social justice in science and science education means for our research practices and methods. Using a blend of critical cross‐cultural and feminist lenses, we explore relationships of power in our research, specifically in terms of knowledge production, representation, and positionality. We also consider our ethical obligations and relational responsibilities as researchers in terms of caring and solidarity. We argue that relevance should be measured as a function of the transformative impact of the research enterprise. We also argue that to do this, researchers need to examine and expose their own positioning and positionality. We propose a variety of strategies, drawn from our work and from that of many others, which illustrate how to build and sustain more caring, ethical, responsive, and responsible relationships with research participants. Background: Tobacco addiction is a complex, multicomponent phenomenon stemming from nicotine's pharmacology and the user's biology, psychology, sociology, and environment. After decades of public denial, the tobacco industry now agrees with public health authorities that nicotine is addictive. In 2000, Philip Morris became the first major tobacco company to admit nicotine's addictiveness. Evolving definitions of addiction have historically affected subsequent policymaking. This article examines how Philip Morris internally conceptualized addiction immediately before and after this announcement.Methods and Findings: We analyzed previously secret, internal Philip Morris documents made available as a result of litigation against the tobacco industry. We compared these documents to public company statements and found that Philip Morris's move from public denial to public affirmation of nicotine's addictiveness coincided with pressure on the industry from poor public approval ratings, the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA), the United States government's filing of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) suit, and the Institute of Medicine's (IoM's) endorsement of potentially reduced risk products. Philip Morris continued to research the causes of addiction through the 2000s in order to create successful potentially reduced exposure products (PREPs). While Philip Morris's public statements reinforce the idea that nicotine's pharmacology principally drives smoking addiction, company scientists framed addiction as the result of interconnected biological, social, psychological, and environmental determinants, with nicotine as but one component. Due to the fragmentary nature of the industry document database, we may have missed relevant information that could have affected our analysis.Conclusions: Philip Morris's research suggests that tobacco industry activity influences addiction treatment outcomes. Beyond nicotine's pharmacology, the industry's continued aggressive advertising, lobbying, and litigation against effective tobacco control policies promotes various nonpharmacological determinants of addiction. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the association of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles and haplotypes in Uyghur women with advanced squamous cell cervical cancer (SCC).Methods: A total of 131 Uyghur patients with advanced SCC (IIb-IVa) and 91 healthy subjects from Xinjiang province were genotyped for HLA-I and II genes using Polymerase Chain Reaction Sequence Based Typing. The different frequencies of HLA alleles and haplotypes between patients and controls were compared and the correlations were analyzed between HLA distribution and HPV status and prognosis.Results: (1) The frequencies of B*51:01, DRB1*07:01, DQB1*02:01, A*01:01-C*06:02, A*01:01-DRB1*07:01, C*06:02-DQB1*02:01, DRB1*07:01-DQB1*02:01 and C*06:02-DRB1*07:01-DQB1*02:01 in cancer group were higher than control group whereas the frequencies of B*44:02, B*58:01, C*05:01, DRB1*04:01, DRB1*12:01, DRB1*13:01, DQB1*02:02, DQB1*05:02, DRB1*03:01-DQB1*02:02 and DRB1*04:01-DQB1*03:02 in cancer group were lower than control group (P < 0.05). (2) The frequencies of A*01:01-C*06:02, A*01:01-DRB1*07:01, C*06:02-DQB1*02:01, DRB1*07:01-DQB1*02:01 and C*06:02-DRB1*07:01-DQB1*02:01 in HPV positive group were lower than HPV negative group, differences of which were statistically significant (P < 0.05). (3) B*44:02 and B*58:01 were associated with reduced disease-specific survival (DSS) (P = 0.010 and 0.007). (4) Multivariate Cox proportional hazard models revealed that age, International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage, tumor differentiation and allele B*58:01 as independent predictors for DSS while FIGO stage and tumor differentiation as independent factors for DFS.Conclusions: In the development and progression of advanced SCC among Uyghur population, the HLA alleles and its haplotypes play an important role. A personal narrative is presented in which the author describes how being selected by the Association for Science Education (ASE) to attend the Harry Messel International Science School in Sydney, Australia started him on a career in science teaching and science research.

The open access movement in its diverse forms constitutes the most interesting and promising model for the research output of an academic library or university. Even though the growth of OA presents some challenging hurdles to academic libraries, there are a number of notable benefits that are good enough to boost this movement. OA has come for good and is rapidly gaining impetus with an increasing number of academic institutions accepting and adopting open access policies and mandates for their research, publishing and dissemination. The purpose of this study is to discuss the situation of open access in academic libraries in developing countries with focus on academic libraries in Cameroon. This article explains the concept of Open Access (OA) by providing its meaning and definition. It throws light on the emergence and development of the Open Access movement, Open Access initiatives, and various OA declarations in the world. It describes different types of OA and the steady progress and increase of journals in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Background: Accurate assessment of kidney function is clinically important, but estimates of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) by regression are imprecise.Methods: We hypothesized that ensemble learning could improve precision. A total of 1419 participants were enrolled, with 1002 in the development dataset and 417 in the external validation dataset. GFR was independently estimated from age, sex and serum creatinine using an artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM), regression, and ensemble learning. GFR was measured by 99mTc-DTPA renal dynamic imaging calibrated with dual plasma sample 99mTc-DTPA GFR.Results: Mean measured GFRs were 70.0 ml/min/1.73 m2 in the developmental and 53.4 ml/min/1.73 m2 in the external validation cohorts. In the external validation cohort, precision was better in the ensemble model of the ANN, SVM and regression equation (IQR = 13.5 ml/min/1.73 m2) than in the new regression model (IQR = 14.0 ml/min/1.73 m2, P < 0.001). The precision of ensemble learning was the best of the three models, but the models had similar bias and accuracy. The median difference ranged from 2.3 to 3.7 ml/min/1.73 m2, 30% accuracy ranged from 73.1 to 76.0%, and P was > 0.05 for all comparisons of the new regression equation and the other new models.Conclusions: An ensemble learning model including three variables, the average ANN, SVM, and regression equation values, was more precise than the new regression model. The aquaculture industry relies on federal investments to stimulate aquaculture research and development (R&D). We conducted this study to track federal spending for aquaculture using a large database of 2957 US federal research grants awarded from 1990 to 2015. During that period, 1.04 billion US dollars ( USD) were spent on aquaculture research, with 919 million USD from federal agencies and 123 million USD in matching funds. By comparison, over the same time frame, the US Department of Agriculture's R&D spending was 41 billion USD. Federal grant funding for aquaculture had a 37-fold return on investment since 2000. Microalgae, oysters, salmon and trout, catfish, and shrimp received the most grant support, and the most common topics/disciplines were aquaculture production sciences, aquatic animal health and disease, genetics and breeding, and nutrition. This paper shows how public policy can stimulate innovation in low- and medium-technology industries, by connecting firms and universities through collaborative scientific research. A conceptual framework proposes that collaborative research between universities and firms may result in tangible innovative outcomes, such as new or improved products or processes, and intangible outcomes that strengthen firms' internal capabilities and thereby indirectly increase their innovativeness. Findings are presented from a case study of a Swedish public policy stimulating the development of firm capabilities for innovation, through collaborative research projects connecting universities and firms in the food industry between 1998 and 2006. In line with the conceptual framework, the analysis distinguishes between (i) direct outcomes, such as new products; and (ii) indirect outcomes in the form of the development of firms' capabilities to innovate. The reported incidence of arterial and venous thromboembolic events varies markedly between VEGFR-TKI-related clinical trials. Here, we performed a meta-analysis to determine the incidence and the relative risk (RR) of venous thromboembolism events (VTEs) and arterial thromboembolic events (ATEs) associated with these agents. Databases (PubMed, Web of Science) were searched for relevant studies. Statistical analyses were conducted to calculate the summary incidences, RRs and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using either random-effects or fixed-effects models according to the heterogeneity of the included studies. A total of 24,855 patients from 48 studies were included. The overall incidence of all-grade and high-grade VTEs associated with VEGFR-TKIs was 3.6% (95% CI 2.3-5.2%) and 1.6% (95% CI 1.0-2.4%), respectively. The use of VEGFR-TKIs did not significantly increase the risk of developing all-grade (RR 0.91; 95% CI 0.68-1.22; P = 0.558) and high-grade (RR 1.05; 95% CI 0.84-1.31; P = 0.769) VTEs. The overall incidence of all-grade and high-grade ATEs associated with VEGFR-TKIs was 2.7% (95% CI 1.7-3.6%) and 0.6% (95% CI 0.2-1.2%), respectively. The use of VEGFR-TKIs significantly increase the risk of developing all-grade (RR 3.09; 95% CI 1.41-6.76; P = 0.033) ATEs, and a tendency to increase the risk of high-grade (RR 1.49; 95% CI 0.99-2.24; P = 0.101) ATEs was also detected. Patients with cancer that receive VEGFR-TKIs are at high risk of developing ATEs. Physicians should be aware of these adverse effects and should monitor cancer patients receiving VEGFR-TKIs. The commercialization of higher education institutions’ (HEIs’) research within the South African National System of Innovation (NSI) has received prominence in the post-apartheid era. Intra-African NSI dialogue to draw out context-specific and generic country experiences that could inform policy developments, and initiate and accelerate strengthening of research commercialization is important. However, there is a lack of data for a comprehensive and informed overview of the role of HEIs in commercialization of research and the main challenges they face. This paper intends to propose a more comprehensive platform for promoting, building, and managing commercialization of research. This mixed-method research confirmed that South African HEIs combine education, research and community engagement, but their base needs to be strengthened for research commercialization to occur. Findings identified that HEIs’ commercialization of research is constrained by lack of commercialization skills and low numbers of qualified staff, brain drain, aging of faculty, absence of intellectual property (IP) policy measures, and focus on lecturing rather than research-focused mandates. Proposed strategies to improve research commercialization should include development and implementation of fair IP policies and guidelines, bolstering of human and organizational capabilities at HEIs and research institutes, and strengthening periodic reviewing by the National Intellectual Property Management Office. Background: To compare the clinical outcomes after implantation of AcrySof Toric IOLs with different clear corneal incisions.Methods: Sixty cataract patients with regular corneal astigmatism who underwent phacoemulsification combined with implantation of an AcrySof Toric IOL were enrolled. They were divided into two groups according to the position of the clear corneal incision: steep-axis and non-steep-axis. Main outcome measurements included visual acuity, residual astigmatism and changes of corneal astigmatism 3 months postoperatively. Deviation of IOL axis according to the re-calculation using the actual surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) and visual function 3 months after surgery were also evaluated.Results: The corneal astigmatism decreased significantly in steep-axis group 3 months postoperatively (P < 0.05). Besides, more patients in non-steep-axis group were with irregular corneal astigmatism after the surgery (43.33% vs 10%, P = 0.004). The deviation of IOL axis according to the re-calculation using the actual SIA was significantly larger in non-steep-axis group than that of steep-axis group (P < 0.001). Moreover, the postoperative visual function was better in eyes of steep-axis group in various measurements, including point spread function, modulation transfer function and high-order aberrations.Conclusion: Steep-axis clear corneal incision could reduce the cylinder power of toric IOL and lower the chance of postoperative irregular astigmatism, which may consequently improve the postoperative visual quality. In this paper, I present a conceptual argument for ‘teaching-led research’ in which university lecturers construct courses that directly and positively influence their research, while at the same time, safeguard and enhance the student experience. A research-pedagogy for higher education considers the link between teaching and research, but rather than the more usual conception of research-led teaching, in which teaching is enhanced by research, it becomes teaching-led research in which research is enhanced by teaching. I argue that this idea is foundational to the modern research university, but also difficult to realize unless teaching and learning are designed for these ends. A potential model is teaching undergraduates as researchers with students learning by doing research and I present a case study from a science degree programme. I conclude by anticipating the likely cultural and political barriers to teaching-led research and suggest how tensions can be managed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The -137 G/C and -607 C/A polymorphisms in interleukin-18 (IL-18) gene have been reported to be associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk, but the results are inconclusive. Considering a single study may lack the power to provide reliable conclusion, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the association between the IL-18 -137 G/C and -607 C/A polymorphisms and AD susceptibility. A comprehensive literature search of PubMed, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Wanfang databases were conducted before September 1, 2015. The pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Five eligible studies with a total of 1536 subjects were finally included in this meta-analysis. For the IL-18 -137 G/C polymorphism, a significantly decreased risk was detected in patients carrying the C allele of -137 G/C in all study subjects in allele model (C vs. G: OR = 0.816, 95 % CI = 0.680-0.980, p = 0.029). Moreover, stratification by ethnicity indicated markedly association between the -137 G/C C allele and AD risk in Asians. For the IL-18 -607 C/A polymorphism, a significantly decreased risk was found in patients carrying the A allele of -607 C/A in all study subjects in dominant model (AA + CA vs. CC: OR = 0.696, 95 % CI = 0.529-0.915, p = 0.010). However, the results suggested no significant association between the -607 C/A polymorphism and AD susceptibility when stratified by ethnicity. Our present meta-analysis suggests that the C allele carrier of IL-18 -137 G/C was associated with decreased risk for AD in Asians. Further well-designed case-control studies with larger sample size and more ethnic groups are needed to confirm these conclusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We assessed the intake and major dietary sources of lutein, zeaxanthin and lycopene (non-provitamin A carotenoids) in Spain using food consumption data from the Spanish National Dietary Intake Survey (2009–2010). Three-day diaries and one 24-h recall were used to collect dietary data and a software application that includes HPLC data was used. Average intake of those carotenoids was 4290.8 μg/d (67.1% total carotenoid intake), mainly from vegetables (3414.0 μg/d), followed by fruits (393.5 μg/d), oils/fats (204.0 μg/d) and eggs/egg products (170.0 μg/d). Main sources of lutein and zeaxanthin were vegetables (62.9% total diet, 1235.2 μg/person/d). Lycopene intake was 3055.6 μg/d (71.2% of non-provitamin A carotenoids), mainly from tomato and by-products (86.3%) and watermelon. Red- and orange-colored fruits and vegetables were the major contributors of non-provitamin carotenoids (3219.0 μg/person/d). Balanced diets should favor fruits and vegetables over other dietary sources (oils, eggs, processed foods) that contain components to be consumed with moderation. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
