This article examines the concept and horizons of repetition in foreign language classrooms at two points in time: within the audiolingual method and in contemporary contexts, where we will focus on the developments of the communicative methodology. While little was known about the cognitive impact of repetition practices, common in mid-20th-century methods, with the emergence of Cognitive Linguistics in the 1980s, it became possible to glimpse the horizons of repetition concerning human cognition. This impacts cognitive mechanisms for understanding the world, such as categorization, chunking, memory storage, analogy, and cross-modal association. The study compares the understanding of repetition in the audiolingual context and its use today, within language-in-use framework, in which repetition, as it is currently understood, is effectively a central element in language learning.
