Abstract

The article discusses the study which investigates the Oxford-RAL retrieval of Aerosol and Cloud (ORAC) algorithm to observe cloud model from the visible to the mid-infrared. The study used optimal estimation method, which enables error propagation and the inclusion of measurements in a mathematical framework. It mentions that the algorithm was applied to the Along-Track Scanning Radiometers ATSR-2 and AATSR.

The article focuses on the retrieval of cloud parameters from satellite multi-spectral imager data using optimal estimation. The parameters include cloud top pressure, cloud optical depth, cloud effective radius. Optimal estimation is tested by performing retrieval simulations for a variety of simulated single layer and multi-layer conditions.
